tests are impossible
he lost our tests....so we all got A's!!!!!!!1
Not very helpful at all. Difficult tests...confusing wording techniques.
great teacher
hard tests because of how he words things, but good guy to know for the future because he is pretty connected in the business world. take the honors section... its not much harder and its a smaller class
Great guy as well as teacher. Will go way out of his way to help you. Class isn't hard but watch out for the tests.

It's not too cool when teachers purposely try to trick you on tests but if you know it's comming and you know the info, you should be ok.
one of the pointless classes that everyone has to take as a business major.. it might have been that fact, but otherwise he sure didn't help the class along all that much.... easy but definitely a snore.. try to avoid it
All business majors must take this class. The tests are tricky. But if you continually reread the material, you'll be able to do well. Atkin is very helpful when it comes to working with you on your project, but not always clear. Nice guy, boring at times
Weird class. Very enthusiastic about nothing. I'm telling you, this guy used to be a HUGE pothead.
He's a goofy guy but has knows what hes talking about. He is very helpful. However, he is also very straight forward. If he does not feel that you are putting forth your best work, he will let you know about it.
Seriously, this guy is just a lot of talk . .. His feedback is vague, and he hardly if ever follows through with plans; i feel sorry for you if you think he has connections
Best professor I ever had.Has some great stories and takes class very seriously. Is always straight to you.Great guy to sit back and bs with.Tests are rough. PROJECT IS OVERRATED.Do your work well, study like crazy and you'll learn a lot.
Dr. Atkin is on of the best professors I've ever had. His quizzes are really tough, but he's really humerous and informational. I would highly reccommend him to anyone!:)
Start memorizing the book the day you get it. His tests are ridiculous! The project is a pain in the ass, get a good group. His fingernails are just about the grossest thing ever. Creepin' a bit...
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR. THE BEST AT PITT.
As previously mentioned, the project is overrated. I didn't find the tests to be that difficult, just read through the book over and over and realize that every question is designed to trick you. Seemed to only pay attention to minority students and girls; prob b/c he is a bleeding heart liberal.

it was tough requires a loooot of studying just memorize the book verbatim , hes a very nice professor though and he would actually sit with you for hrs to help you out he definitly helped me alot. I really recommend him
He's a nice guy. Class isn't as fun as he is.
The single worst professor I've had here at Pitt. Unfortunately since hes been here so long, the administration cant do anything about his lack of professionalism.
This guy's just a giant prick. He's so full of himself it's amazing. I can't stand him and I'm pretty sure it's mutual. He's an eccentric old man. Thank god i never had to take him for MCE. He also looks like Dr. Wily from megaman.

This class is going to be tough, the group project is very time consuming and hard especially with a crappy group. The tests require very solid knowledge of the material. Atkins is mostly nice unless you show him somehow that you aren't willing to work for him then he'll turn on you quickly. Just pay attention or at least look like it and go to class and he'll help you.
I loved this class and I loved Dr Atkin. His tests were straight from the notes and he was very helpful! He is definately one of the nicest professors in CBA.
Definitely the best professor Pitt has to offer. Some people complain about the workload, but if you study the way he tells you to on day one, there wont be a problem. Hes very accessible and is always willing to help. MUST TAKE if you're interested in business!!
I love Bob Atkins. He makes class fun. It's a lot of work, but you'll get through, and who else can you really take for this class?
quizes are meant to trick u, u have to know the matrerial inside and out otherwise you will never be sure of your answer. working in a group is a pain for the project. id check out the other professors.
Total jag-off. I can't stand this guy, and I'll be glad to get out of this awful course. If you are in business though you have no choice but to take him. The tests are complicated, and I think he gets enjoyment out of watching students fail them. The group isn't really as daunting as everyone and their mother in CBA make it sound to be.
so full of himself. hangs around cba 24/7. has favorites in every class. if he doesn't know you on a first name basis good luck getting an A. the project is rediculous. he tries to trick you on every "Quiz" question.
The project is overrated - just do you're work on it, and you'll do fine. His quizes/final (which accounts for 70% of your grade) are just ridiculously hard! He is a nice guy and very helpful, but his class is insanely difficult. Good luck!
Like stated before, the project is overrated. Just do the work, and you'll be fine. Quizes/final are insanely difficult. Make sure you understand all the concepts on the sample quizes, and go to the help sessions! You can't just memorize the book, you have to understand the concepts. Hard class, but good guy.
I've had him twice. MCE, the quizzes are difficult, but he's really helpful with the project. HRM, the quizzes are easier because it makes more sense and you have more experience, but the project is more in depth. He will def help you as long as you ask. He's a great guy and an awesome prof. He writes the text so it's easy to read and cheap.
Horrible! Tests are beyond hard with very subjective "answers." Company Analysis (group project) is worth so much of your grade, and you never get to see how you did on it... He actually calls on you in class and demands participation. Apparently tenure grants absolute freedom. Also, the material is difficult. That's not his fault.
Real good guy. your gonna die on your quiz just accept it. kinda funny he'll def make you laugh. project sucks if you have a bunch of goofs in your group, but if you just get the work done its not bad.
He doesn't have tenure as someone else had mentioned. If you study for the quizzes, then they aren't hard. You get feedback on the project twice so you should be able to get an A on that too.
This class was not fun. Reminiscent of high school with its fascistic focus on rote memorization. Atkin wrote the course's text, and honestly, class consensus was that he made it all up, and quizzes seem largely his personal opinions in the form of multiple choice questions. Has a huge ego, belittles students in class and brags about himself. Run.
Either you are gonna like him or you are gonna hate him. I feel that alot of the information was his opinion rather than fact. The group project is not nearly as bad as everyone makes it sound. The test and quizzes are VERY tricky. You will have to take the class with him, if you put in at least a little bit of energy you will earn a B.
The man is more concerned with leaving a strong memory of himself, than the material. Ego-driven class with subjective answers; Atkin is often irritated if you don't get the material instantly. Memorize the notes. The quizzes aren't concerned with your knowledge of the material; they're designed to trick you. Completely ridiculous.
As previously stated, you are either going to love or hate this guy. His quizzes are designed to trick you. ATTEND the review sessions-things he covers are generally tested. Project is overrated-if you do the work and follow the feedback you'll do well. Not an easy A, but it can be done with a bit of work. Really not as bad as everyone says.
Dr. Atkin challenges you. If you put in the time and effort, you can do well in the class and learn a LOT. Atkin is incredibly knowledgeable and interested in learning and research, and if you get to know him, you will learn a lot.
Project is overrated and not hard at all. Tests are impossible (all of them). You will probably fail the first test, don't worry you can drop one. Test questions are hard. But he's still a very smart professor.
Seriously the worst class of my whole life, the huge project is the easiest part, his quizzes are near impossible and you will basically be forced to dedicate a week to studying for them... be prepared to be challenged hardcore.
good guy, very smart, sometimes can be a little cocky, MCE is difficult though, tests are tough because they are real specific, project is a big workload, MCE is generally a "B" class, he doesn't want you to fail his class, he'll even help you out big time on the exams if you ask him questions, but class is just difficult
Sucks that hes the only MCE teacher. This class should not be difficult, but he makes it that way. VERY tricky tests for no reason. It should be called the language of business. Its a whole bunch of **** terms that give meaning to what business naturally do in their existence. He starred in Back to the Future and is overrated as a teacher.
Nice prof. really cares about the students. Teaches an interesting class you will learn alot if you work hard.
He is the quintessential college prof. Extremely intelligent and can drive students nuts, but he really does care about his students. I haven't found a more accessible professor
This class is VERY intimidating for freshman. This is basically your first business class, and all these business concepts are throw at you, and you don't know what to expect. Atkin really cares about his students. However, his quizzes are impossible! You'll learn to hate multiple choice questions after his exams. They are designed to trick you!!!
Everyone needs to stop complaining. The class is hard. Expect that. Just study a lot and know the book and you'll do fine. The project is way easier than everyone says. He has a pool of questions for the quizzes, so basically use the samples from last year. The final is mostly questions that you will have seen before.
He attaches terms to very simple ideas, which you will be tested on. Too much focus on memorization. Maybe it's just me, but almost everything we went over is common sense. He teaches you how corporations/businesses work. If you were involved in retail, as a job or as a vendor, every concept is like, duh!
Great professor. Class is actually interesting and really makes you decide if you are going to enjoy business or not. To prep for tests, read over the material at least 1,000 times and know it like the back of your hand. The project is also 50% of the grade and takes almost half the semester. Work hard on that. Class is interesting and I enjoyed it
Very good professor. I had him once I transfered from Penn State and I have to say he was very intimitating for a little man but so nice. He tried to help anyone that went to him. The class is hard if you are not used to memorising large sums of info but other then that it is very interesting and a good choice for undecided business majors big help
A hard class but not impossible. Study hard, go to the review sessions, and get in a good group and your set. Grade is made up of 3 multiple choice exams (one is dropped), the project, and a multiple choice final. Just go into the class knowing its hard and put the time in to study and you'll be fine
Unless you enjoy excessive ambiguity and are willing to purchase NBA products, don't take this class.
great professor. very enthusiastic and definitely worth going to class for even though the tests are straight from the readings.
He brags a lot about himself. When you ask questions he talks down to you like you're stupid. He made up the text- it has so many typos and is common sense but he makes it complicated and you need to know every word of it. Practice exams are sometimes nothing like the quiz. His wording intentionally tricks you so you get the wrong answer.
extremely tricky tests, so it doesn't matter if you get help or not, just read the questions carefully...
I had MCE with him and he was pretty cool. Definitely the most helpful professor I've had in college so far. His quizzes can be really challenging though and his question style is really hard to get used to. However, he clarifies concepts well and reviews the material. It's obvious he wants you to succeed even when his testing style makes it hard
by far the best professor ive had. you have to get used to his questions, but the content is very easy to understand and prof atkin is extremely interesting. this class isnt as bad as its cut out to be. if you are really into business, this class should be very enjoyable. get to know him outside of class too, he's absolutely brilliant
LAMEST CLASS EVER. WHY IS THIS CLASS A REQUIREMENT? EVEN THOUGH I GOT OUT WITH A B, I DIDN'T LEARN ANYTHING NEW
His class is hard. His tests are just plain stupid. Some idiots, who don't open the book get 99's while smart kids who study their asses off barely get 80's. As someone here said this is a "B" class, thats the grade you typically get...
Honestly, I would never imagine myself saying this but what he does teach you is extremely useful. Even though the class may suck when you're in it, the information is very important. Just get used to his questions and pick members in your group who won't slack off and you should be fine.
I think this guy will keep teaching this class for the next 20 years. Even though this class is very informative, his exams are meant to trick you, AND he tells you he tries to. They are insanely difficult and people who dont go to class can get the same grade as people who study for 10 hours. I cant believe this is a required course. Good luck.
Bob's lectures are boring and hard to follow. Only way to do well if memorize the**** out of his textbook.
Despite his difficult reputation, Dr. Atkin is a great professor. He was very enjoyable to listen to and made the hour long class fly by. The material isn't very hard, there is just a lot of it. His tests are difficult (and he tells you this), but as long as you read all the material and study, you should be fine. The project isn't bad either.
very easy. he will tell incomming freshman his class is impossible. Project long but not hard..meet with your group! An "A" is easily accomplished
I don't know why everyone said this class is easy. Maybe they stayed inside rereading his book for 4 hours everyday... but you are in for a ride with this guy. This class is Not easy and the project is graded unfairly. You will see once you take this class that it is not an easy A by any means.
good professor but tests are extremely stupid. knows his stuff very well, he just doesnt know how to test the material in a reasonable manner
Great professor but fairly tough. If you work hard you will probably get a B, or A if you're awesome. His tests can be tricky if you don't completely understand the concepts. Thoroughly read the text!
He knows what he's talking about, and is a pretty good lecturer. His tests are horrible. He phrases his questions badly, tries to trick you on semantics to a ridiculous degree, and thinks the information taught in his class is indispensable. It's a good foundation, but it's pretty basic. He's the only prof who teaches the class so goodluck.
by far the best professor i've had at pitt so far. i'm a sophomore finance major and pre-dental student and loved this class. his exams aren't as hard as everyone says, if you take your time and ACTUALLY READ each question they're not bad. the project is tough but if you use your TA for feedback and don't wait until the last second you'll be solid.
Everything you've heard is true. That said, it's not so bad. Project has nothing to do with the class. Class has nothing to do with "managing." He basically undoes theoretical micro and introduces some MBA level marketing concepts. Tests are NOT that hard. Just READ the question CAREFULLY, and KNOW the material. And when it doubt - it's FALSE! ;)
The professor has lot of experience but very poor teaching style. He is yet to figure out how to evaluate the students for the course. He will weigh your comments made in the class based on your geographic location and experience / background. He has a lot of potential for improvement and needs to learn from other good professors in the University.
Brilliant Professor ! Study hard and you'll get a good grade ! Class is very interesting and informative ! The material of the course is very different and you WILL LEARN A LOT !!
Atkin is a really cool and interesting professor. The quizzes are much easier than people make them out to be. Only bad part about the class is the team project.
Learn the textbook inside and out. He tries to trick you on the quizzes but he admits it and the lowest one is dropped. Final is half of your grade but a lot of the questions you will see on the previous exam. I learned a lot in that class.
One of the best teachers you will have at PITT.
People overrate the difficulty of this class. Study a decent amount. Get a good group. No reason not to get a B+ at the worst. If you are pretty intelligent and "get" the class you'll get an A.
The material is just glorified economics and it isn't hard to understand, but he makes the quizzes really tricky and not exactly from the book. The project isn't bad if you have a good team. He's amusing, but just makes learning the material more complicated than necessary. EVIL QUIZZES!
Funny, cool, intelligent and reasonable guy. Very helpful class, very interesting material. Lots of fun.
Professor Atkin is extremely knowledgeable and a really inspiration man. His class is hard because he believes in his students so much. If you are interested in starting your own business this may be the most influential class you ever take.
will either love professor or hate professor. tests are hard must study textbook a lot including endnotes! Atkin means well he really loves his job and really wants to help you succeed. if you go to him for help he will definately help
Prof Atkin is the man. But you better study because you can't slack in his class. the material isn't boring though so it's not too much of a chore. also , make sure you are scouting out team members for the project as early as possible and pick the right ones! it'll make the research paper so a lot smoother. Good luck!
Prof Atkin makes this class way to difficult. He is a good teacher during lecture and will help if needed, but he makes his quiz's way too challenging which is not necessary. You must know EXACT definitions of words, one word mistake leads to wrong answer. It's a must take class so good luck.
Atkins is a powerhouse of knowledge. However, his organization skills are not effective.
His tests are not as hard as everyone says, I got an A on every single one but still got a B thanks to the project. The project is incredibly boring and he will give you a bad grade if he doesn't like you. Definitely my least favorite professor so far at the university.
One of the best professors you will have at Pitt. The class is hard, but if you read the book and go to lecture you should be able to get a B.
The less I went to class the better I did on his tests. If your a business student your stuck with him, so its better to do the work and not complain about how hard and annoying it is. The class is different than any class you will ever take, but lectures are interesting, and he knows a lot. The project is beyond boring.
The test are very difficult because every questions has "all or non of the above" which gets tough to think about. Out of the 35 "quiz" questions I'd say 10 of them are easy and the rest make your think. The project is dumb and will do no good in the future like he says it will. READ the book and study if you want to earn a B! A is too hard.
The questions take some getting used to... taking your time/reading carefully is key. I ended up (surprisingly) with a pretty good grade in this class, and I still had a high amount of uncertainty with the majority of his questions... would change my answers a lot (and most of the time I would be correct in doing so). Group project not tooo bad.
Great professor. Interesting lectures. Boring boring project. Quizzes and final are all multiple choice. Final is 50% of the grade. You have to take him. Read the book. Don't believe the horror stories.
Class was not that difficult. Just read the book. Project took me one day of work. Final is a tiny bit harder. He's an awesome guy and had a great sense of humor. Got an A-
Very solid teacher, Atkin really knows what he's doing since he's been teaching this class for so long. The class project is a pain but just look at the 10-K and you'll be fine. As for the quizzes, the lowest of the 3 gets dropped. On his quizzes the object is applying the concepts from class and not simply recognition. He offers help sessions too.
Atkin always kept class entertaining with his stories and real life examples. He likes to call on students during class . Took 2 highest quiz grades out of 3. Entrepreneurial project is a lot more work than I first thought out. VERY beneficial if you hope to open a business one day, make use out of the T.A.!
I liked him, he uses practical real world examples and is pretty straightforward, although at times a little goofy. It was actually pretty basic, but the quizzes are tricky. Learn to love the book, know everything backwards and forwards "conceptually." Be able to put info into practice with examples etc. You'll get use to the questions,
He is a great professor. He is very helpful and offers plenty of chances to talk to him or take part in his study groups to get extra help if you need it. He uses plenty of real world examples in order to make everything much easier to understand. The project can be a little tricky just make sure you do plenty of research and look at the 10k forms.
Atkin is one of my favorite professors. You just have to get used to him. I got under a 50 on the first exam, but ended up with a B in the class. He drops the lowest test. You adjust to his way of writing questions for exams as the class goes on. Read the book really well. Project is really long but not hard to get a B on it. Join small study group
One of my favorite professors! Gives real life examples. Gives plenty of extra help opportunities and genuinely cares about his students. A little tricky at times, but definitely worth it.
Memorize the book and make sure to get a hold of multiple old quizzes and you will do fine, it is pretty hard though because his information and the way he relays it on quizzes is the OPPOSITE of straight-forward
This class is tough, but it really teaches you to analyze business operations at the firm and market level. Also, you'll learn about the different concentrations of business such as marketing, finance, accounting, and management, which may help you decide your career path. I think if you've decided to be a business major MCE should be interesting.
This was my favorite class all semester until I received my final grade. I found the material to be really interesting. Got A's on all 3 quizzes, worked super hard on the project, and ended up with a B in the class. Not even a B+. I emailed him for a breakdown of my grade and he never responded. No longer a fan.
Excellent professor. Real world examples make this class go by very quickly. His quizzes can be a little tricky, but honestly just know the material down to every last detail. Highly recommend getting old exams, they help a ton.
Great guy. His lectures were really informative and entertaining. That being said, I didn't like the textbook (an overpriced paperback that Atkin wrote in an outline format)and hated how you had to memorize word for word to do well on the tests. I also don't like how he never discloses your final exam nor project grades (>half of final grade)
Very unorganized lectures combined with a poorly written textbook. Test and quizzes are written poorly and much more difficult than needed to be for this class. Overall very bad teacher
Atkin is a nice guy and extremely smart. After the first quiz he does small group study sessions and they're really helpful! Be prepared for a poorly written textbook and unorganized lectures though.
Atkin is a great professor to have to be introduced into the business world. His exams are challenging, but if you study the textbook you should be fine. He also drops the lowest exam grade. He is extremely approachable and willing to give help, especially with the big group project.
Amazing prof! Always made class interesting and enjoyable. His quizzes (tests) are hard, but if you study you'll be fine. He holds small study groups that meet once a week that really help your quiz performance.
You'll hear a lot of mixed things about Atkin, here's the low down: he's a little wacky and can be super picky about class and tests but go to class, talk to him, and respect him and you'll grow to love the guy. Pay attention and READ THE BOOK; seriously important! The project is really tough and the tests are not easy but he wants to pass you!
This is by far the hardest class I have taken at Pitt. Atkin is a good guy, but a terrible professor. He really stinks at explaining things, despite the fact that he does hold small group study sessions and exam reviews. He expects you to learn everything from reading the book, which didn't work for me. Do not take him!
His class was interesting, but you must know every detail of everything. Don't take freshman year if you can help it. Be prepared for this class, have friends who will study with you. The class is more of an experience and Bobby is the only professor so give it your best!
I cannot accept some of his idea, it doesn't make sense. do not recommend
Great guy, but quizzes are worded in order to trick you. He expects you to know every detail of the book to a borderline ridiculous extent. Thought the project should have been worth more since it required real world application instead of the quizzes and final essentially being a regurgitation of definitions.
Worst Professor at Pitt literally made the whole course up, half the definitions aren't even real things and he charges 100 dollars for 100 pages of garbage
Yes, the class is challenging, but Professor Atkin cares about his students a lot, running his own recitations and small group study sections. You will need to know the book inside and out as well as lecture material, but Prof. Atkin wants his students to succeed and does a good job preparing you. Very great introduction to the business school.
You can tell he wants his students to succeed despite the difficulty of his tests. He has small group help once a week and if you pay attention in class, read the book, and read the test questions carefully, it's an easy A. This has been my best class at Pitt so far and if you're actually interested in business, it's interesting.
Atkin is an admirable prof, very accommodating & shows effort to your success. Quizzes are tricky, study definitions & know concepts COMPLETELY! Entrep. proj.=close to no assistance. Difficulty of concepts similar to Micro, think you know but have no idea. Attend class, ask for help. Can't stress enough he cares about his students that show effort!
tests were very tricky and final was half of grade.
Do not take him. You don't want these problems. That is all I have to say. Seriously.
He isn't a bad guy but his tests were very irritating and it seemed like he just wanted to trick you. I do however give him credit for holding review sessions and always being accessible to students, unlike many professors at a big school like pitt.
Interesting and engaging lecturer, a lot of lecture material is on tests. Difficult tests, but if you study lecture notes and textbook it's doable. Group project is now optional, I personally didn't do it. He is very willing to help students if you attend recitation and bonus study sessions.
Awesome teacher, extremely helpful, read the book and pay attention in class.
Atkin wrote the book for the class and knows the information like the back of his hand. There are four quizzes, each worth 20% of your grade and a final worth 40%. (you drop your lowest quiz score). The wording on tests can be tricky, but as the semester goes on, grades on the quizzes seem to go up. (As long as you read each chapter in the book)
Respectable guy. Offers help on project, even though not all what he said I agreed with. Tests are pretty hard, you must pay attention in class or read the book. Overall he is a fair teacher with hard tests.
Professor Atkin is definitely on top of all the material and has a large volume of experience working in different contexts. His tests seem designed to trick you and a lot of the time I felt as though it depended entirely on chance if you picked the right answer or not. I lucked out and got a 97.33% quiz average. Others were not so lucky.
Atkin is a very knowledgable business man and knows what he is talking about. His class is unlike any other class I've taken due to the difficulty of the tests. His wording is very tricky, but getting a good grade is very possible. Must read the textbook and take detailed notes. He truly teaches you about business and enhances your understanding.
Tests are extremely hard. The only way you will get decent grades on them is if you re-read the chapters 4 times and take notes as you read. Good luck
Atkin knows his stuff. He also expects you to know it. There is no way you will pass his tests if you do not understand concepts COMPLETELY. It IS very doable though. Pay attention in class, take detailed notes of EVERYTHING in the book, and ask him to clarify anything you do not know. An A is very possible and doable. Lowest quiz dropped.
Ok, here's the deal. Whoever gives Dr. Atkin a poor rating is forgetting to separate Atkin as a guy from the class itself. The class is difficult by nature, but Dr. Atkin gives you EVERY OPPORTUNITY to succeed. Whether it's voluntary review sessions, one on one meetings, etc. --- if you put the time in, you will succeed. Best prof that I've had yet
Atkin will give you every chance to succeed in his class. If you study the book inside and out, take notes on any problems you miss, and attend his smaller study sessions, you will do very well in this class.
Bob Atkin is a great professor. He cares so much about his students that he even met with me on a Sunday night before a test on Monday in order to discuss a concept with me. He is a very knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and thorough professor. His tests are specific but they are a great tool to prepare you for later coursework
Professor Atkin is amazing. Yes, his tests are challenging but he gives you EVERY opportunity to succeed if you take advantage of his help. Holds review sessions and allows you to drop your worst exam. You have to know the material and study a lot. The people that complain about him don't put the work in. It is 100% possible to get an A.
There is a lot of negativity surrounding him, but I don't think it should be there at all. The course may be a little harder than usual, but that doesn't mean he lacks as a professor. His experience and knowledge of the material is excellent and he genuinely cares about students. He provides MANY opportunities for extra help.
Hands down the most relevant and interesting course in CBA. The way Atkin designed this course is brilliant. He gives his students COUNTLESS opportunities to succeed. Yes, his tests are tricky, but they truly test your knowledge of the concept. With his hep, I am now equipped with the tools to start thinking like business professional.
Atkin definitely expects you to know the material inside and out--going to lectures and reading the book (a few times) is often necessary in order to master the topics. However, I wholeheartedly recommend this class as it expands your knowledge and helps improve study skills. There is no doubt that he wants students to succeed .
Atkin is a good guy who really knows the material, he wrote the book! Sometimes he can be a bit tough to understand but overall he isn't a bad lecturer. Tests are hard and can be a little unfair, but he doesn't require you to do the entrepreneurial project and therefore you shouldn't take anyone else for MCE.
Personally, I think the class is unfair. He wrote the book and you are pretty much forced to buy it, because if you don't read it, you are guaranteed to fail the class. Most of the book is based off his personal opinions and many terms in the book are made up. Also believe tests are a little unfair. Many questions are based on his opinions.
Loves Professor Atkin's class. I feel so lucky having him as my professor. Learned so much from him, definitely recommend!
His lectures are very interesting and the information he teaches is useful and applicable in the business world. His tests can be difficult and certain questions are purposely made to trip you up if you don't pay close attention. If you put in a little extra effort and go to his review sessions, you will probably get better results on his exams.
Bobby Atkin was quite a guy. He is brilliant and takes his job very seriously. I loved his sense of humor. This class is tough and you have to read the textbook cover to cover. However, you will learn so much. He offers so much help so there is no excuse there. I would take him again.
Expect to be called on without raising your hand. If your answer isn't 100% correct he will call you out on it. You have to memorize the text to even pass the tests. Expect to hate your life this semester. His book is filled with opinions & typos but he thinks he is an MCE god. very arrogant. 10/10 would not recommend.
Atkin is a great guy. Reading the textbook thoroughly is essential, but you learn a lot of useful information. Lectures are not mandatory, but he talks about examples that sometimes come up on quizzes. There a four quizzes, the lowest of which is dropped , and a final. The questions can be tricky but aren't too difficult if you know your stuff.
Bob is a funny little dude, and his lectures are entertaining but mostly just because he's like that weird old uncle you never had. I stopped going to lecture about halfway through the semester and ended up with an A in the class, but only because I always thoroughly read his book. The book is super dense, but if you want an A, you need to read it.
Atkin stresses it from day 1- READ THE TEXTBOOK. Four "quizzes" (drop the lowest) and a final. All exams contain many trick questions, so know the book material VERY WELL. I skipped a few lectures, because he just goes over book material, and I was fine. Atkin wants his students to succeed, and is very accessible for extra help if you need it.
Ok guy but tests are made to trick you, and are very difficult defiantly one of the hardest courses I've taken
Bob is a good guy, but his lectures can sometimes turn into rants and he sometimes comes across as condescending, as he loves to play the "old sage" part in CBA. He genuinely does care about his students and is more than willing to help anyone who seeks it, but his tests and textbook can be confusing to navigate.
I took Atkin's MCE class my first semester at Pitt and it was definitely a wake up call to what college was like. This class is not easy, you need to read and attend the lectures if you want to do well. I even attended optional study sessions on weekends just to grasp the material better. Atkin is a great professor who will do all he can for you.
Bob Atkins is a very interesting and intelligent individual. He led the class with inspirational speeches and engaging conversations, really encouraging and expecting full participation. I learned so much about business but also about life and how to approach it. I also really enjoyed the intimate environment that Bob created. Would recommend.
Great professor. It's a tough class for most freshman coming in to CBA and in many ways his teaching ways are old school but he challenges his students and they come out of the class with important concepts they can build on in the future.
Great guy and a good professor. One of the few teachers that seems to care about the students more than he cares about the subject hes teaching
I really enjoyed Atkin's lectures; he's a funny and quirky old man. He is really respected and has been around Pitt for a long time. Also, he honestly does care about his students even though he seems a bit unapproachable at first. His exams are challenging and frustrating at times. I would recommend Atkin; you might not get the grade you want.
Bob is always willing to help his students out. A lot of people don't like him because the material can be frustrating. Just make sure you read the book and you will get the hang of the material. Practice using the old exams he gives you!
Atkin literally created MCE when he came to Pitt so he can teach whatever material he wants. His tests are meant to trick you and you have to know every detail from the text. He doesn't give you notes, just talks for 75 min straight. its hard to pay attention in class and if you don't read the book then good luck.
Atkin's lectures are heavily based on the textbook because he wrote it. He puts in a lot of his personal stories in the lectures to help. 4 Quizzes/tests (drops one) and a final (40%) or optional project that makes final only worth 20%. MC quizzes are meant to be tricky so easy to get many wrong. Must read and go to lecture!
Easily the worst/ most difficult professor & class I've ever had. No matter how hard I try in his class I have seen terrible results. If you want to feel bad about yourself, then Bob's class will do that for you. Get ready to read like crazy.
Atkins is a really nice guy. MCE is a class based around some content actually taught in each business major mixed with a whole bunch of Atkins opinions, emphasis on his opinions. The class is incredibly hard to study for and often very confusing. 4 quizzes (20%) drop 1 and 40% final. You can take BUSERV1915 instead, ask your adviser about it.
This class should be a piece of cake, however, Atkins makes it so much harder than it has to be. Every test is made to trick you instead of being straight forward. I would read chapters multiple times and memorize all the vocab but yet do bad on tests. However, Atkins himself is a very nice, respectable teacher.
Bob is a great guy and a great teacher. He is very easy to access outside of class and will do anything for his students. If you have taken microeconomics before, the material itself is not difficult, you just have to read the textbook. However, the tests are brutally difficult and no matter how much you study, you will struggle on them.
At first, the content is trite, but it gets a little better later on. The quizzes are so hard and seem out to get you unless you have the test bank and read the TB frequently. He is a very passionate prof and loves his job. Recitations & study sessions are so helpful. I love Bob and his exams are hard; toughen up & study and ur good
This class is so frustrating. The material is easy, but the quizzes are meant to trick you. He wrote his own book and you need it to pass the class. Basically a scam. Theres no reason the tests should be this difficult. You need to read the book, but you don't need to go to class. You won't do well on the tests either way.
Professor Atkin is a great teacher. You must read the textbook and attend lecture, as the tests as very specific, and require heavy recollection of both the textbook and the lecture material. Studying is required, but a good grade can be achieved if you work hard.
it's a great class but all you need is the textbook. the lectures are basically reading off the textbook since he wrote it. there's 4 quizzes (lowest is dropped) worth 60% of your grade. the final is worth 40% but there's an optional project to split the weight of the final (i recommend). quizzes can be very tricky even if you know the material
Nice guy, boring material and lectures, overpriced textbook
The class is based off of a poor textbook he wrote. The quizes are made to trick by him playing on words. This class has zero utility. This course is designed to just define different parts of a business with fancy jargon that only academics use. Calculus 2 was easier than this course. If you can't memorize, you're going to struggle to pass.
4 quizzes (drop lowest) and a final. Theres an optional project which helps your grade significantly. The entire class is entirely based off of the textbook, which Dr. Atkin wrote. Lectures are a review of the readings. Memorize the textbook and all the terms. Tests are meant to trick you, arent really fair and are unnecessarily hard.
Bob is a great guy and a great professor. Although his class is known for being hard, you can do well if you put time into reading the textbook and asking questions at the review sessions he holds. If you want to, you can learn a lot from him. Attendance isn't mandatory but the lectures are helpful so I would go to them .
Literally every Pitt business student has to take him. Probably one of the smartest professor you're going to have, but if you don't read the textbook you won't do well and the only people who do poorly are discouraged and don't put the effort in. It's an easy B if you actually try.
If Im being honest, not a horrible teacher just a harsh grader. He made you feel bad about answering a questions wrong and he wasnt an understanding professor.
If you're a Pitt Business freshman/transfer, you'll run into Bob Atkin. He really is a great professor. His class is known for its difficulty, but it is by no means impossible. READ THE BOOK. Bob wrote it and he teaches almost alongside it (with a few things that aren't covered). Pay attention to what he says in class, and you'll turn out ok.
Bob is the worst professor I have had at Pitt so far. The exams are guessing games and the book is purely his opinion. Not sure how this course is even still offered. He bases the class on 4 exams and that is it, the optional project will take you forever to do and few people do it. Might have to even retake this class we will see. Not happy
Atkin is a really interesting guy and has some solid advice if you give him a chance. The material is pretty basic and very applicable to other business courses. The only grades are 4 quizzes and a final (one is dropped) and they are only meant to trick you and do not assess what was learned in class. Get ready to read and pray you answer correctly
Professor Atkin's class can be boring sometimes but if you pay attention in lecture and read his textbook, you are good. He also posts practice quizzes that are helpful for the actual quiz. 4 quizzes and final and you get to drop 1 quiz. Kinda hard but lots of room for improvement.
Bob isnt bad as an instructor, he has his set material that he goes through each and every day, and it never changes. He is a very tough grader and many of the questions on quizzes could be opinions, but if you read the book and study/go to review sessions, you should be ok. Every CBA student has to take his class, for good reason.
I took two of his classes at the MBA level. They were discussion based courses, which you expect at that level. Primarily, the class was given an article to read beforehand and spent the class time dissecting it. The main grade for both courses was based upon a final group paper you had the final class to complete. Overall, would recommend.
atkin is very smart and you can really learn a lot from him. the people who complain just don't want to do the work. an A is definitely attainable if you commit. his exams are unique and definitely difficult but you get used to it. DO THE OPTIONAL PROJECT!!! atkin is a great guy
This professor is unavoidable so there is really no hope for you. Just take him and read all of the text over and over until you 100% understand it. There are 4 quizzes, lowest gets dropped, and a final that is extensively hard. Pray for yourself in this class.
This class is basically a scam, U have to buy a textbook over 100 dollars and listen to his disorganized lectures. Everyone is saying this class helps you to develop the basic concept of the business is it really??? I do not even understand what he is saying, All you could do is read the textbook and do his quiz which based on some wordplay tricks
What a guy! He cares so much about his students and is really passionate about teaching. His quizzes can be difficult but he wants to help you and wants you to learn, so take advantage of study sessions and extra review! Be prepared for the chapter he is teaching before class so you are able to participate when he asks questions!
Atkins is a good guy who means well. However, his MCE class is graded by just 4 exams that make up your entire grade. He makes you pay $100 for a textbook that he wrote. He does not use powerpoint or any real visuals to aid his lectures. I studied more for this course than any other one I took and still could never get an A on his exams.
A lot of people dislike Dr. Atkin because they struggle with his quizzes, but if you read the book, pay attention in class, and try to think like him, an A is achievable. The first quiz hits everyone hard, but he drops one and after knowing taking one and the practice quiz, it gets better.
Horrible class. Unorganized, lectures make no sense, quizzes are just a play on words. Grade is only dependent on quizzes and the final. And an optional project that is SO much. Literally worst textbook written by Atkin and cost $100. Such a waste of a class should not be required or should have a new curriculum written for it.
Took 2 classes with him. MCE got a C+ mostly cuz I didn't care or try. Took him again in HR a year later and got A+. I was surprised he remembered me though as I had him once a week and the class has about 250 students. Just a genuine guy who is easy to talk to.
