This is an EXCELLENT professor, if your major is English Literature. Really knows his stuff. You have to READ THE BOOKS in this class. This also applies to his Engl 1110 class.

He only wants his own opinions regurgitated back to him in an essay. He cannot stand interpretations other than his own. He doesn't really teach anything. He only babbles on (he must love the sound of his own voice) and he is sooo boring!!!
Most helpful teacher ever! Pretty hard marker, but willing to do anything to help you if you make the effort. Learned tons in his class. If you can do well with him, you'll do fine in any English class

Run. Run away. If you are trying to maintain a decent GPA, don't take this course. If you want to challenge yourself, and don't care about marks, go for it. He is brilliant, kind, and interesting -- but an extremely hard marker.
Well, if you're afraid of hard work you should steer clear, but if you're up for a challenge, ready to speak up in class and actually look big words up in a dictionary, then there's NO BETTER PROF!! He was great...don't listen to the horror stories!

Horrible prof! Marks papers and summeries on how close you come to his own thoughts or work. When I took his course there where 35 students. By drop out with an "W" deadline there were 11. Do yourself a favour take it with another prof.

Probably one of the worst english prof's I've ever encountered. Seems nice, understanding and open-minded, but once the course moves one his true colors emerge...and it's not pretty. Out of a full class, more then 3/4 withdrew. Avoid Him!!!

When you ask for help, he is always very kind and helpful.
This teacher is HORRIBLE!...he is good with grammar but when it comes to marking essays...he is one hard ass marker..."X" him off your list...cuz this guy isn't the greatest teacher I ever had

He is such a harsh marker. He actually wrote in all my papers that he did not understand what I was talking about. Never take his class, thats my advise.
He is an average teacher. Not much feedback, but, is easy going. Good teacher for this class cuz GPA doesnt matter and all u need is to get C or higher.
Professor Attridge is the best English instructor on campus. He had a brief stint in the N.H.L. when he was young so his observations on hockey are always entertaining in class.

I'm sure he's a nice man and all, but I've never doubted my writing skills like I have when I encountered 1100 with Attridge. Coursework is mostly essays, which are marked pretty toughly, and quizzes. English with him is generally boring, although he does work in class discussions in which students have their say (whether they like it or not).
damn.....i drop his class after mis term..coz he failed my paper and mid ter,...no matter how much effort i put!if english is not ur 1st language,don't take his class!!!

I've tried you guys, but first it was a D and then a C+/B-. The guy is harsh and his choice of essays to analyze are soo bad! Yeah, I wouldn't recommend his class unless you find it interesting to listen to a monotone voice drone on about the meanings of pathetic essays by pathetic writers who should never have been published!
Attridge should not be allowed to teach. His choice of essays is the pits. I'm talking about unintelligible vomit that victimized students like those in my class have been forced to interpret. If that's not enough, Attridge offers little help into what insights can be gained from pouring over the rubbish for hours. Be warned.

This is the worst prof I have ever had! Very unpredictable and bizzare in marking, got an A on two essays, and D! on the in class. Hes relentless, if your opinion in your essays doesn't match his exactly, YOU WILL FAIL THIS CLASS, extremely unfair, almost every individual in his class fails, I'm curious why he is still allowed to work there BEWARE

Oh man. Fresh out of highschool, this was my first english course at a post secondary level.To sum things up, I was an A english student in highschool and now I'm at a C/C-. This prof is a nice guy, but he doesn't explain what he's looking for in your essays. You spend classes doing quizzes that are only worth 5% of your grade! Be warned.
Good prof
One of the worst profs I have ever encountered in my 4 yrs of university. He is unclear, unhelpful and pompous. Asking him Qs get you nowhere as he infantilizes you & proceeds to show you how extensive his vocabulary is! Anyone who opposes his opinion is therefore doomed to fail. The myth in which > or = 50% of his class fails is, sadly, true.
I'm a B+/A- student in all of my classes but I received a C+ in his class. I also received a D on one of my essays. He isn't clear on what is expected on them. if you agree w/his POV you will get A's if you don't you'll end up getting D's. You spend all classes completing quizzes that are only worth 5% of your mark. BE WARNED!

In all honesty he is a really nice prof. to do well in his class you must have a grasp of english 1099 or a strong understanding of Gr 12 english. just be prepared, try to participate, and just try to do well, he takes achievment into his marks as well as attendance. just go to class and any one can pass. oh and do your readings!
He's a super nice hippie...but he'll take dumps on each and every one of your essays.

Brutal hard! Extremely strict. He'll teach the best English ever if you survive his class. Overall, extremely nice teacher and strict marker but it's only good for us. Practice many essays and get help! Lots of bonus questions on his quizes, that's a real treat too bad it's worth little, but every bit counts.
I don't understand the comments below: he is a good teacher, and he offers many opportunities for students to write practice essays, etc. The student below acknowledges all of this, but still gives him a low rating. He is hard, but fair. He has high expectations--isn't that a good thing?
This prof thinks eng 1100 is eng lit. he doesn't teach english at all. Instead, he runs over short stories class after class. Basically, the class does not prepare you for the final at all and his remarks are very unclear.
Okay, whoever wrote the comment below is a doofus. Attridge doesn't teach "short stories" in 1100...he teaches essays. It's not a lit. course--it's a course in rhetorical analysis. He's a nice guy and a good prof....bit of a tough marker, but, whatever, it's english...it's always hard.
He is a nice guy, an endearing and softspoken man. He's a hard marker and a lot of the people in my class did really bad. He loves grammar and is very particular about the way things are done. Once you get the hang of what he actually wants it gets better.

Nice guy....good class. A bit of a rough marker, but you feel pretty good when you get a high grade from him bec you know you earned it.
Very hard marker. Left his class with the same writing/english skill level as I went in with. Feedback does not help improve writing. Not suggested for people who want to learn english but rather experts in english already.

"Bob", as he likes being called, has a no late policy for asignments. As well he has been teaching for decade. Perhaps this is the reason why he's so anal; he has probabaly seen it all in his time. If you take his class be prepared, pay close attention to handouts, and go to class because he will not go through anything in detail.
I think he is a very wise man, good teacher with alot of deep insight. He really wants everyone in class to genuinely feel his passion about what he teaches. he always clamins he is there to help. This class makes me want to learn! i enjoy it.
He is a nice teacher. Always smiling. Doesn't put his students on the spot. Make sure to attend all classes because he does a lot of easy in class quizzes.
Really nice and soft spoken teacher. Lots of easy in-class quizzes to bring up your mark. Very hard marker! Course is completely based on rhetorical analysis. Four essays in total, two are in-class. If you understand the basic concepts, you will do fine!
Worst english teacher i have ever had. the classes are usless.. a total waste of money. absolutely no reason for failed essays. got accused of "cheating" with NO evidence.. i dont think attridge should be allowed to teach. every single student in my class is failing and has to repeat again next semester, like myself. this is so stupid and unfair.
Can you pass with him? It's possible. Can you learn anything, definietly not. If you havent already mastered how to write a rhetorical analysis,dont waste your time and money. A very good prof. He wants his students to succeed in his class and he will try to help you to the best of his abilities. Lectures can be boring; He likes to spend a lot of time discussing the readings. Overall: if you hate English, he will make it bearable.
Hard marker, no late assignments allowed, but definitely a good teacher. He's someone who actually understands English and abstract thinking and doesn't just try to teach you straight out of the text. Great guy and great class.
One of the WORST instructors ever! He is not sensitive to student's needs or circumstances. Don't even think about handing something in late. Take english with another teacher (E. Gooding). "BOB" stinks and makes the entire class a terrible environment to learn in.
Quite a hard marker, but if you put in effort you'll end up learning a lot and your writing will improve. Expect a low grade on essay's, but all he wants is for you to do good in the end to show that you know how to do a rhetorical analysis. If you do well in the end, good chance that he'll boost your grade.
He is a very difficult teacher. He will not offer help if you go to him during office hours, to review your grade...he just sort of shrugs and says tough. His grading is totally arbitrary, and even if you improve immensely, he retains his judgement of you and your grades will not rise with the quality of your work.
