Looks like Tommy Lee Jones
Talks like Sean Connery...words his test questions too hard
No Comments
I feel like I am in church
He really does sound like Sean Connery
Good teacher, reminds me of Tommy Lee Jones!
Very good teacher
each test is over many chapters and when he says he covers all he means it!
He is very confusing and not very clear with what you can make out.
Hes an awesome prof.
the best part is you dont have to attend any lectures, 7 hard exams at the CLAS
Never really went....but it was kind of boring
He loves to hear himself talk. Going to his class was torture and not necessary
I liked him. He was fair and really nice guy. GO to study sessions, they help a lot
easy class, take it
I want him!!
Dude, Tommy Lee Jones watch out! here comes Dr. Bailey. I swear they're twins seperated at birth!
He has a lot of knowledge and that can sometimes lose you. But he treats you as an equal and works with you if you need help.
i agree very much, he could be tommy lee's stunt double. pretty cool teacher.
Not too hard, but a bit dull sometimes.
Great teacher...attend class you will be rewarded with the knowledge to receive an A
Tommy Lee Jones mixed with Sean Connery in some type of weird scientific experiment. lol. Nice guy, the SI sessions helped out a lot. He gives you all the notes and slides in class, and then gives you more information in class. Slack and get at least a B
Nice guy, means well, likes you when you are in class everyday. Go to SI sessions. Study the notes he gives you, and yes, reading the chapters does help.
I started doing bad at first b/c you actually have to study the material... but go to SI ... they give you all the test answers! Not hard and no you do not need to go to lecture! SLEEP!
He isn't too difficult as long as you study before each exam.
He looks like Tommy Lee Jones and sounds like Sean Connery. His class is very unorganized and the labs are torture. Read the book and go to class if you want to do well.
He said he's been teaching the same old borring way for a long time now and that he wants to change things up a bit so he's trying some new things with technology and with group work techniques. I enjoy the class.
Large group projects are dumb
i totally agree with the tommy lee jones and sean connery bit. I think its hilarious that someone else thought the same thing.
Awful teacher. He can't keep track of anything. For five classes straight, we watched group practice presentations, then wondered why people did so bad on the test. I think he just got tired of teaching.
I don't think he enjoys teaching very much. It seems he does as little work as he possibly can. I don't learn anything in class. If you want to do good on the exams read the chapters, study quizzes, and go to the SI session before the exam.
He gets pissed when no one knows whats going on in class, but that's because he spends no time teaching and asks us what we've learned.
The only thing you learn through Bailey is that even he doesn't know what is going on.
Worst teacher at CMU, doesnt explain anything, self taught class, dont bother to go to the lecures because he doesnt teach anything
The only point in going to lecture is to get counted for attendance. You don't learn anything from him, but there's no homework and easy tests
He is a nice guy but his class is pointless. He is to busy having you play with your remotes to teach you anything. If you want to do well in his class do the on-line quizzes and read the chapters. Then you never have to go to class.
He gives you no notes. His lectures are pointless, he wants people to read chapters and wants to discuss them in class as a large group, but this technique sucks. Labs are POINTLESS.
I hated this class. it's self-taught. he doesn't give good lectures. he assignes group projects. you have to do EVERYTHING on your own. it might as well be an online course. plus, he thinks he's funny when he's not...
This man is absolutely awesome. He is so passionate about what he is doing. Other students don't care for his innovative approach, they just want someone to read the book to them in lecture. I think he is just ahead of the rest.
Well of course he does not explain good stuff but what can you do.
worst teacher that I have ever had, didn't teach anything
he's a cool guy and passionate... he added 2% onto everyone's grade just because.
You do teach yourself a lot of the material, but alot of the stuff is from high school. Bailey is very cool, and gives quick responses to emails. Very enthusiastic!
I have some mixed feeling on this class, there were times when I learned something and times when I wondered what he was thinking. There was a lot of mix ups this semester with the project and trying to balance the class work that was kind of assigned.
Good ole Bob needs to figure out how he wants to run his class. If you want to teach yourself everything and like working on group projects with about 60 kids in it, then go ahead and take this class. I would suggest finding a different teacher.
My advice, don't take the 8 oclock class cause its pointless to go and fall asleep. The group project is the only thing to worry about and just make sure you have a hard working group like mine. He also added 2% to our grade for being lab mice.
Bailey is horrible. The class is self-taught. Group project with 60 members. Bad lecturer. CPS response pads are crap. Save yourself!
this class is boring as all get out. i had no clue what he was talking about all semester long, and got a A in the class. the material sucks, the lab sucks, ecology sucks. the only reason why he's good? your allowed a cheat sheet for the final!
He sorta reminded me of a robot. The lectures were pointless and the exams were easy if you read the stuff posted on blackboard. Beware of random assignments on blackboard.
Material in class is not really on the tests, just the essay questions. The rest you have to get from reading the book.
Easy teacher. CPS response pads are nice at times but can slow you down during exams. Not a great, seeing how he doesn't teach much and makes you do online quizzes and assignments. Only thing bad about class is the group project with 60+ people.
funny teacher; looks like tommy lee jones
What the hell is he doing teaching this class? It's ridiculous. All the exams are take home, the final is open book-open note, the labs are pointless and you'll still get an A if you never go to class. Actually, going to class could make you stupider!
This class is a joke. It is by far the easiest class I have ever taken. All exams are take home, and the final is open book/note. Dont bother going to class, he doesnt teach you anything. Try to teach yourself through the book. He doesnt do examples.
Bailey is willing to teach you if you are willing to read the material before class and participate in the discussions. The group project is no fun! Tests are super easy if you just practice the online quizzes he gives you!!
Ya, if you wanna teach yourself bio material than this is your guy, but if you like a teacher that actually assists you in teaching, no. Hate the group project, you can't make anything work with a group of 60 people! Take someone else!!!
This class is entirely self taught. Lectures are pointless, he doesn't really teach us anything. He makes you do these stupid group projects with like 60 people too. Wouldn't recommend him.
His Ecology class SUCKS!!! Horrible professor who is of NO help to his students. One of those only in it for the money- so STAY in the field then, I say!!! He knows his stuff, but couldn't teach it to save his life.
Although he is unclear the class is so easy it does not matter. You can take the online quizes multiple time until you get a perfect. The tests are the basically the quizes with test written on it and you dont have to go to class. I didnt and I got an A.
This class is really easy, but you have to do it all on your own. My advice is to make a study group and try to learn from one another. The study group will also help a lot for all the take home exams. This is an easy class but you don't learn s***!
really enjoyed the course. learned tons. prof was very easy to approach with questions. group project is a huge part of grade, but he graded pretty easy.
He is one ****poor instructor.
He is stuck on himself, he needs to move along to something else, he can not relate to those who Biology nuts.
poor instructor, he obviously does want to be here, so he just move on. do not ask him for advise on other classes, cause it will for you to take the hardest and toughest**** out there. he is a ****poor advisor.
tough class, hard to remember everything he wants you to remember
Exams are really hard and he is full of himself
He needs to get real,
He seems to be a pretty nice guy, and he seems to really know his stuff. This class may have been one of the easiest A's I've ever gotten, but he is sooooo boring! Sometimes it felt like a waste of time to come to this class.
This class is dumb, the project is confusing and he doesnt really talk about anything from the book very often. Try to take someone else
he never talks about anything relevant to the class and he rambles about nothing. extremely boring...and the project assignment is confusing...he tried to make the class hard this semester so never take him. horrible teacher. total absolute waste of time.
I absolutley loved Doc Bailey!!! He is awsome! As long as you pay attention in class you will do great! I don't even like biology and I got an A!! Great intro to Bio class, even greater Prof!! Doc. Bailey...you ROCK!!
Bailey's class is a joke! He never teaches things that are relevant to anything. Also, this project that we have to do is ridiculous. The TA's don't even know what the hell is going on so how are we supposed to. By far my least favorite class.
I am not so sure about this class. He's a good prof I've had him for both 101 and 500, but 340 is just an overall rough class to begin with. Go to class and pay attention and read the book and you'll be fine.
He rambles and is scatter-brained; you wouldn't have to go to the lectures except he likes to announce homework assignments and exam dates then. He doesn't follow a syllabus. His exams are hard; he doesn't give much info on what to study. He's not terrible, but he's not great either.
Tests for us were the exact same questions that you get to for the study/practice test on BB. HAVE TO GO TO LAB tho, but it's pretty easy lab.He sometimes takes attendence. Have like a huge 20 person team project at the end of the semester, but isnt bad because you divide up work evenly.
This is the stupidest class I have. The project is an absolute joke! He never talks about anything related to Biology, and when he does he jumps around! Avoid him!
I think the material he covers is interesting, but it is difficult to apply it to tests. He is very passionate about biology and seems to enjoy teaching, but the class is HARD, at least the exams are, if you are awesome in BIO take him, if you are unsure, STAY AWAY!!
Intensely horrible. Just horrible. Didn't lecture at all (pointless) and tests covered a lot of material from the book but vaugely touched on/mentioned once or twice in lecture.
very intense, passionate about the class, felt bad for him sence there were many ppl sleeping on desks who never gave him a chance
His Lectures are pointless and unrelated to the material tested on so I never go to lecture which saves me time. The exams are fairly easy if you have a good bio background. You just have to go to lab and the exams. The projects are also a joke.
Everything he talks about in class is totally irrelevant towards the exams. He also posts "self Assessments" and tells you to use them as study guides, but doesn't put anything from them on the exam... Don't take this class if you don't have to!
Crazy
Ecology is not a hard subject. Bailey isn't hard. He's just an EXTREMELY BAD professor. It's true, anything he says in class is unrelated to anything on exams. Notes, are also pointless. Essays on his exams are generally easy. Focus more on those, and you'll get more points.
This Bob Barker wannabe is the 2nd worst professor in Brooks Hall behind Dr. Slim Scheide. A total jerk, avoid him at all costs!
This guy is a total flake. It's an easy class, just don't take it in the morning. Go to class. He doesn't have the whole packet that you can study from anymore.
give the man a break: he does know his stuff.he can be intimidating but if you just pay attention and go to class, piece of cake. it is a very interesting ,class he will keep you on your toes.
He is a very intense, very passionate, very exciting man. I wish I could have him for all my classes.
Great and easy prof. Bio made simple and easy to understand if you just read his notes and the chapters. I got an "A" in the class by only attending on the first day of class and test dates. Highly consider taking him!
He is a poor professor, assigns rediculus projects with little time to work on them. He actually fell asleep durring presentations last semester and he is very bad at posting grades in a timely manner. Lectures are horrible as well.
Really nice professor, but he gives you a ton of small assignments on the side that are just busy work. Tests will be hard if you don't read both the book, your notes, and what he puts on blackboard. My roomates all had easier BIO classes but overall, this one is okay.
The man has a heart of gold. He cares about the subject and has insight he wants to share. The problem is that no one actually wants to learn BIO, we all just want to complete the requriement. Thus, all assignments are "hard" and "boring". If you don't like BIO, this guy is as good as any.
Not a bad guy, he is ok. You need to be prepared for his class but it isn't bad. If you don't know the answer AVOID EYE CONTACT! He will tell you on the first day of class that if you make eye contact he will call on you and trust me, he will! He reminds me of Sean Connery. Overall okay professor.
Great guy - very nice, helpful and available. However, he assigns a lot of busy work and has a tendency to leave you unprepared for exams. The lab is a big help though, and the TA's are great.
this class is alright, be sure to read the chapters. Also my lab teacher and the prof. didn't have very good communication so beware if the prof. is talking about an assignment for lab, make sure you are talking about it in lab too. He is a nice guy and passionate about this subject. And if you don't know the answer avoid eye contact at all costs.
Good class
This guy will stare randomly at people during class and is very demanding. However, he has that strange old hot guy thing going for him.
Great guy! He is willing to answer questions. He sometimes is alittle long-winded, but he means well. He is very willing to compromise on assignments by extending deadlines and giving you more advise.
I had him for 240 and liked him, but in this class he just lectures radomly and the busy work he assigns insn't very clear of what he wants or if and when it is due, and doesn't help you prepare for exams. He is very nice and interesting, just ask questions and comment on his teachings, he tends to be pursuaded.
If at all possible, take this class with someone else. He goes on and on about nothing everyday and then tests you on what he didn't teach. He lets you have 1 page of notes, but they usually don't help much. He gives lots of busy work, but you never know when he'll collect it... and you will never get it back... so you have no idea how you're doing
He is nice guy. He talks exactly like Jim Carey in the Grinch. The tests aren't that bad and he is very helpful.
well, he wasn't bad. He did make Bio seem a lil more interesting, but I still didn't like the class. The tests are hard, and there's a lot of reading to do, which i never did. Not many assignments though.
It was my least favorite class of the whole semester. Very unorganized, nearly pointless PowerPoint notes, and I still feel like I didn't learn anything. He wasn't clear about the stupid project that we had to do in our labgroups and when to turn in our Ecological Footprint journals. I'm just SO thankful to be finished with this class!
very confusing with his lectures and keeping on subject. honestly i can say the lecture didn't help me at all. he assigns work but doesn't let anyone know until the day its due. i ended up with a B but just be careful!
This class was extremly thought provoking, we didn't learn much from the book, but had a ton of discussions, and there was a huge project that was a ton of fun. Take this class if you like to discuss.
He always harassed us and just had a negitive perception of the students he was teaching--if you call teaching what he was doing. He is the only professor I have really hated at CMU. Plus, he never got into any of the lab material. It was like taking two different confusing classes. The project was long, but almost everyone got A's.
OMG! How can this man still be teaching, and by what I am reading here he is still using the same dreadful techniques in his class room. I took this class almost 20 years ago. He used an overhead projector, had one eyebrow and none of the material in his lectures appeared on the exams. I just memorized the book and got A's.
Mmmmm.....very, very good.
Horrible Professor, very unclear about assignments! You don't learn anything from going to class, it's a waste of time. Take it with somebody else!
He's obsessed with concept maps and sounds sockingly like Sean Connery.
a quiz every week but they are pretty easy and a project.
Easy class.
His tests are pretty easy, obviously you have to study to do well on them. He is unclear on most assignments though.
Tests were a little difficult, but if you studied you did well. We had to do a lot of concept maps which had to be memorized in order to do well. Class is interesting though, and I liked his personality. Be prepared to have to memorize a lot of information.
He did a lot of discussion during lecture time, and although some of it helped on the tests, a lot of the test materials were taken from the book that was never really covered. I had to do a lot of self-teaching in this class. He also would assign a lot of homework by way of email the day before class - both things got annoying very fast.
Class is super easy. Don't need to buy the book cause everything he talks about is in powerpoint notes which he then posts online. He's boring to listen to, you'll fall asleep. You don't really learn anything you haven't learned in school.
He gets easily off topic. Go to class, do the homework, and study, study, study! The tests arent hard if the stuff is studied well enough. Final wasnt hard at all. Practice concept maps and have good luck in his class...I wouldnt recomend him though.
Bailey is an enthusiastic teacher, while attendance is not required, there are assignments due daily and those assignments are things that are often on the exams. the exams are not difficult, but if you attend class it is plain and simply the same material that is looked over in class that is on the exam, so just go to class!
All semester I hated this guy... but then after I looked back at everything, he is actually a really good teacher. Study the concept maps hard core, he tends to show you them in class which is why you must go to class. Juts do all the homework, dont worry much about the book, he gives you study points.. know them
He is a pretty nice guy who cares about his students learning the material. Make sure you read the book when he tells you too and attend lectures. He does a lot of little homework assignments that you will miss if you are not in class. He utilizes blackboard frequently.
He's an all right guy. He's really nice and seems cool and down to earth. He lectures a lot about issues going on in the world like population. His tests were somewhat difficult because more than one answer would seem right. Pay attention to the lectures, but its not threatening to your grade if you skip. Reading the chapters would help a bit.
Nice guy. Never misses class. Sounds like Sean Connery. Exams are pretty easy if you go to class because he pretty much tells you exactly what is on them.
Straight forward stats class. Tests very hard on even simple material. Labs are not hard, but are written in a very confusing manner. Antagonized students in my class. Generally a nice personality but can blow up with anger.
SUPER easy, just do assignments. I didnt read much. I just skimmed before I went to class and I did fine. Pretty interesting guy though.
This guy is terrible, It should be called sustainability 240. Doesnt go over anything the the book has for the class. Its really easy..... just do the stupid homework he assigns. There is a good chance you'll be overloaded at first then he forgets that he's a professor.
Not very nice or understanding when it comes to being sick and not coming to class. His lectures were a complete waste of my time.
talks a lot about how humans are ruining the environment, boring lectures
Basically he just ranted about how humans are destroying the planet. Most of it was common sense, very little actual science. To boring for a night class though. The normal daytime class might have been better. Group project on Earth Day about sustainability, take home exams. *yawn* Nice guy who wants to save the world.
nice teacher, seems to be knowledgable of subject. He tends to talk about a certain thing in the cahpter and nothing else in it. He talks about things that dont really matter alot too. Pretty easy, dont have to attend class everytime if you dont want
He is simply trying to prove to us that we are ruining the world. He spends a lot of lecture time talking about personal stories and not really teaching. Tests are easy, lectures are boring, you won't learn anything you didn't know before. Do the homework he assigns, it's the same thing every time anyway...concept maps.
Just about the worst class ever. Very boring lectures. It's impossible to know what's on the test since what he rambles on about in lecture rarely ever coincides with that he tells you to read in the book. Lots of concept maps to do. I would say if you're going to take bio, take a different professor!
Lecture is usually pointless. Sometimes he collects assignments not often and no grade has ever been seen for them. A total of two tests. A semester long journal assignment that will end up being part of your final is given. Plus a reflection essay at the end. Whats on the final is anyone's guess. He is not very helpful at all. Not the best teacher
Class was a waste of time. Lab was do-able but you have to pretty much teach yourself. he was late for class, he didn't show up once or twice with no notification, then he didn't give us the SOS form to rate him. this is the case of tenure-itis. Pretty much its time to retire.
This is largely a discussion class about climate change. Learned very little new information. Constantly ended early and it seemed like he had a general lack of intrest in our learning.
Bailey is retiring soon and has completely checked out. He gives very unclear directions, never holds the class until the end and doesn't seem to care whether we are there and participating or not. An easy A, but very frustrating.
Does not teach at all, merely "facilitates discussion" which is ineffective since he doesn't care whether or not we participate. Doesn't grade anything at all, but be sure to keep up with the assignments since you turn in everything at once. Seems to have an attitude of not wanting to teach at all, do not take him if you can help it!
One of the worst professors I had, not because he is a bad guy, but because lecture was basically useless and he skipped 5 lectures (at 8 AM) and did not tell us. I don't know how he expects us to take the class seriously when he doesn't. Lab is doable. If you don't answer questions he asks during lecture you get yelled at.
Class was super easy, basically junior high/high school level biology. Don't need the book at all, I opened it maybe once or twice, if at all. Doesn't really explain anything, but he does post notes on blackboard which were helpful.
I just don't understand how this man became a professor
The lecture is pointless. He just stands in the front of the room and talks all about different topics and you just sit there confused in the lecture hall. He tells useless stories and is extremely boring. The tests are ridiculous. AVOID TAKING HIM IF YOU CAN HELP IT!!
People think he tends to ramble and go off topic but if you read the chapter BEFORE the lecture you will understand what he is talking about. Very minimal homework, tests are moderate. He says attendance is mandatory but it is not, he stops taking attendance a few weeks in. But I still suggest going to class to understand the chapters.
This prof is an useless. he says class is mandatory, but the way he takes attendece is "randomly" picks 10 names and puts it on the overhead and you have to sign it in the first ten mins of class. my name has never came up. Even our lab teacher appoligized because we werent learning the materials unlike the her other classes with a competent prof.
AVOID!!! I would just be echoing everyone elses negative comments as they are also my own.
A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME. i'm sure bailey is fully capable of teaching, but he simply doesn't go through the effort of giving a meaningful lecture. you learn everything from the textbook/study-notes and nothing by attending his lectures. i could have got an "A" on all his exams if he bothered doing his job.

difficult for a 100 level course.
This class was a complete waste of time! Instead of teaching what would be on the exams, he would tell stories for the majority of class. The exams, that could have been easy, were hard due to his lack of teaching. Even after studying, I would barely pass. It was frustrating to go to class every week with no improvement. Don't take this class!
Almost always a lecture leading into some personal, irrelevant story. His excuse for bad test scores is: "Should have read the book!" If you have the teacher, memorize the book, because apparently it's never his fault. Almost everyone in my class was dissatisfied with their grade. Good luck!
Bailey is possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. I have always been really good at science and usually I enjoy the class. His lectures however are entirely pointless and you go over the same useless information daily. It is more worth your time to just listen to the lecture online and read the book than to go to class. Don't take as a UP.
Bailey is an absolute horrible teacher. Going to lecture is a complete waste of time because you learn nothing pertaining to biology. He rambles about things that nobody cares about then gives the class tests over information he did not go over. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR BIO!!!!
Probably the worst teacher at CMU. Does not talk about anything relevant in his lectures. He will constantly be telling you about what you will learn. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! But if you want a good laugh he looks and sounds like Sean Connery
Terrible teacher! If you need to take this class.. DO NOT take him as a teacher. Waste of time to go to lecture because you never learned anything EVER. Worst class/teacher all year.
Terrible teacher. class is pointless, nothing is on test. memorize every detail in book and you might get an A-
he knows what hes talking about. But literally nothing he gives us to study is on the test. He does not prepare you well for exams. If you want to do well i suggest going to SI and maybe memorizing the whole book. Because class will not prepare you
Please seriously I'm in advocate for going to class everyday, but only go to the class on review days but go to every SI section! They will teach you everything you will need to know for the tests. Somehow I pulled an A- in the class and didn't do very well on the first 3 tests..
in this class right now, and I always have something to do. It takes up all my time because he assigns 3 chapters to read at once. He is confusing and does not explain what he wants clearly. Exams are hard even if you spent days studying. His grading system is all out of wack and I still do not know my grade with almost 2 weeks left. DO NOT TAKE!!!
He does not communicate well with the class on the grading and what not. His black board was a total mess. A ton of**** on there that was pointless and didn't mean anything. It was a very easy class, but he was not a very good professor. Not the worst though
Had an A before the final and suddenly I have a B-. The final was a take home essay and I have never written a bad essay. If you want to actually learn then don't take this class with this guy. I strongly advise that you take it with Nancy Seefelt so you don't waste your time and money for nothing. I am a major of biology of natural resources.
He may not have the clearest way of teaching, but honestly if you keep up with the reading he assigns and really be attentive in his class along with tending an SI session once or twice a week you will ace it!! A little extra work is worth the A to me.
Do not take his class. He is not helpful at all and rambles on and on about the same topic ALL SEMESTER. His class is relatively easy, given the exams are online and open book. He gives you a book report and does not tell you anything helpful pertaining to it. This subject was interesting to me, but now I can't stand it.
Bailey is super boring. I didn't learn anything in his class that I didn't know before I took it. He is horrible at informing you of due dates and assignments and expects you to know. He isn't good at black board either. Class was boring. You dont need to attend to pass if it wasnt for attendance points.
He was by far the worst professor I have had in my entire college experience. Didn't learn one thing in his class.
What a joke of a class. Boring, pointless, and I learned nothing new that I didn't already know before. He rambles on the entire semester about the same topic. He expects you to know everything without telling you, and doesn't inform you of deadlines. The finals are take home and also, pointless. Take someone else!!!
Very good professor. Lecture may be boring at times but he is very clear in what he wants and what he says. If you study the online quizzes that he gives to the class for the exams, I can guarantee you will pass with an A in the class. Everything handed to you in the class is great study material. Very cool laid back guy, lab is really easy too!
Awful professor! Doesn't really teach you anything in lectures just rambles on, but you have to go for the iClicker questions. Pretty much had to teach myself by reading the book.
Probably one of the worst classes I've had. He is just ridiculously boring; he doesn't follow any kind of schedule and NEVER informs students of deadlines. The class was a complete unorganized mess. The take home exams were pointless and so were the group projects that nobody showed up for. Avoid this class with this professor. Waste of $1000.
The class seems harder than it really is, study for exams and do all online quizzes and you'll do fine. He is boring though.
I thought that he was an alright teacher, but the course is honestly SO boring. You need an i-clicker and that's the way that he keeps attendance, also stay on top of the online test and the eco footprint project, he looks and talks like Sean Connery which is rather humorous, PLUS you get a page front and back of cheat sheet every test!
Dr. Bailey is a nice guy, but his teaching style is dry and unfocused. He doesn't teach anything useful in class but requires you to be there by using an iclicker (in class response system). His final is impossible and he has random moments in class where he gets mad that people aren't doing their work cause they don't understand it... I wonder why
The lecture of this class was completely pointless, and I never paid attention because it was all over the place. Dr. Bailey was a really cool dude, but I was unable to learn from his teaching style. The only work I put into this class was the online quizes he made you take for points and I somehow ended up with an A in the class!
Had to attend class, yet ever learned anything on exams and even reading the book got lost as to what was actually being discussed and studied.
Very easy class, you don't even need to go every time. He is very understanding when it comes to projects and papers and their due dates! Great class, easy teacher!
2 take home essays that required a thorough understanding of the class, 2 group projects, a book report, weekly online chapter quizzes. He was understanding on deadlines.
This class should've been easy, but not with Bailey. Lectures were terribly boring and he went over nothing on the exams. Lab was slightly difficult at times. Bailey was also very rude when asked questions. The average grade on exams was a 'D' and he refused to curve. Several online quizzes every week. Just take a different prof if possible.
If you attend lecture and take a few notes and you do the online quizzes you will be fine. His lectures are boring but relevant. You got to use a sheet of paper front and back as a cheat sheet for the exams.
I am not sure by the below comments if attendance used to be mandatory but it is not now. The lectures are terrible, by doing the online quizzes, skimming the book and making a good cheat sheet you will do fine in the class. Lab is super easy and most of the time out early. The book could definitely be shared by 2 people in the class.
If you are looking for an easy freshman entry level class this is not the one for you, please try a different professor, hard to understand and lectures were brutal people only showed up for exams and they were 10x harder reguardless if you studied or not class average was D-
Great guy. He is really knowledgeable and has had a lot of experience in the field. He will help if you ask questions. (the material isn't really too hard) Rather predictable instructing methods, but he really wants to see us students make a change and is passionate and inspirational.
Not the worst class but he didn't by any means make me want to attend class. Group projects sucked; however the take home essays were easy.
The class was not difficult. Although the lectures can be boring, the information he presents is on the exams. Labs are super easy. He started something new this year by making all the in-class exams collaborative. So between using your cheat sheet and working with other people, it's not too hard to pass the exams. And the class for that matter.
Not that hard of a class, but not fun at all
Bailey is really easy if you're taking 101N for non major. In high school I got a C in BIO. Showed up to 4 lectures and passed with an A. You have 3 exams but after them you can "collaborate with neighbors" the lab portion is a big part of your grade and you HAVE to go, but this is a very easy class
Took him for 101 and 102. He's a great teacher, I learned more about writing papers and grammar than I did in high school.
Prof Bailey is a nice older man. He is very passionate about biology and enjoys teaching it. He is pretty relaxed, and has been known to allow you to collaborate during every examtest. He may bribe you to go to lecture with quizzes, but they're more for attendance purposes. Overall good beginning class and pretty easy to pass.
The only thing you did in this class was go and listen to long boring lectures. He didn't teach you out of the book in these lectures, he mostly told stories about his life. He didn't make you do anything (other than online homework) until Thanksgiving break and then he loaded on the work. He was unwilling to help outside of class.
I went to maybe four or five of the lectures all semester. They are pretty much worthless. Weekly quizzes online that are all exactly from the book. There are 3 exams and then a final. All the exams you can collaborate with other students in the class and get everything right. If you go to your lab every week you will do fine. Easy class.
This class is EXTREMELY easy! He lets you collab with as many people as you want on all of the exams, even the final and he is a super nice guy. If you attend lab and do all of the online quizzes this class is an easy A. I would definitely take a class of his again.
Professor Bailey is extremely knowledgable about the subject of biology. The class itself is very easy if you make sure to take the quizzes and show up to the lab. Exams are collaborative so it's impossible to not get an A unless your entire group doesn't study
I took this class freshman year and loved it! I never knew biology could be this fun and exciting! The labs are awesome and the lectures are very helpful. Homework is online and is very helpful for the testquizzes!
Bailey is a super nice guy. He understands that we aren't bio majors and tries to simplify things, even though I still didn't understand what we were talking about. If you need a lab credit, definitely take it with Bailey!
Amazing teacher. Easy class! Understands the reason behind most kids taking this class. Extremely easy to pass! Highly suggest this teacher.
Lectures were consistently off topic. He clearly knows the subject, but is practically incapable of teaching. The grading criteria was completely unclear and changed constantly. He doesn't know how to use email or blackboard, which makes keeping up with the constantly changing schedules very difficult.
Literally all you have to do is show up the day of the exams and they're collaborative, if you're looking for an easy A, take this class!!!!
I never went to lecture and got a 98% in the class. But ALWAYS show up to your lab because you'll get assignments. Just figure out what days to show up for the exams!! All exam questions are from your online quizzes :)
Bailey is an extremely easy professor, you don't even have to attend the lecture to pass. However, he is extremely unclear about assignments and very unhelpful outside of class. I'm also annoyed that I spent money on the book just for the Mastering Biology code. I wouldn't take a class with him again even though it is an easy A.
He did not teach or give organized lectures throughout the semester. He uses Mastering quizzes to teach the material, but does not EVER give an organized lecture. I never once took notes because any notes you take are not relevant to your success. You have two group projects in all and most class periods are used to work on them.
At first I was a little hesitant taking this class; I was thinking it just wouldnt be for me. I started to look forward to going to his class. Bailey allows his students to voice their opinions, and to discuss topics in a friendly environment. In all I always felt like I was motivated to look at biology from a new diverse perspective.
Nice man but never actually teaches you anything. Class felt like a waste of time with group work and online quizzes. The entire semester he did not post any grades until the very end so you never knew where you stood until the final grade was posted.
Very easy class, but Bailey usually gets off topic during lecture. Attendance isn't required nor necessary in order to do well. All exams are collaborative & you can use a cheat sheet. I showed up to maybe 5 lectures all semester and did just fine.
Bailey gets off topic a lot. You don't need to attend class to pass, you can skip and still get an A or a B. He doesn't really teach biology related stuff. He is very nice though.
Professor Bailey's lectures are interesting and informative but they don't correlate with the lab at all. Show up for class or you might miss a pop quiz, most of the quiz material is basic though so its easy to get a good grade in the class. DO YOUR WEEKLY JOURNALS or you will basically fail your final exam, that is all. . .
His tests were hard but you got to use a full sheet of paper front and back for every exam. He was nice and an easy teacher.
This class was a joke. By the end of the semester, we had grades for two things; a midterm and a final. There were two group projects involved in this course, but I never saw a grade for either one. Never took notes, not even one. I showed up to maybe a quarter of the classes and got an A.
He is a pretty easy going guy and wants everyone to do well. However to get much out of this class you need to PARTICIPATE in discussion during lectures. Pretty much everyone in the back sat on their phones all semester & that's their problem. He did put grades in for our group projects, he just did that last you can see them on blackboard now.
Lectures were a drag, it really doesn't matter if you go or not, just on exam days. and Lab. Nothing useful to hear
Bailey is honestly a pretty funny guy, but he wasn't very good at teaching. I went to the lecture for the first two weeks of class and then didn't step foot into the room until the final. As long as you go to lab and study for exams, lecture is not mandatory.
Dr. Baileys lectures are beyond boring and showing up to class in not necessary AT ALL. He rambles on a lot about things that aren't biology related and you wont really learn anything. Online quizzes are easy and exam questions are taken directly from the quizzes. He kind of can be rude but he's cool if you at least ACT like you care about class
You don't need to show up to class to pass. He is a very boring professor, and he never lectures about anything important. He'll go off topic and talk about his life, rather than talk about what is going to be on the exam. He tends to cram the class period before the exam, but his tests are super easy and just based off of the online quizzes.
Professor Bailey is such a great guy. Attendance is not mandatory and I didn't go often because he usually does get off topic a lot. Every test we were allowed a full sheet of paper front and back filled with notes making it extremely easy. Contrary to what everyone says, this is such an easy class and I highly recommend taking it with him.
This class is ridiculous! You literally learn EVERYTHING in lab. Going to lecture is a big waste of time. The exams are somewhat similar to the work you do in lab so a good way to study for exams are to go over those. This lab uses Minitab which only works on Windows, so if you have a MAC you have to do your homework/study on a computer in the lib.
I hated this class with a passion. You don't really even need to show up because he goes over random material. He does not have a syllabus, so he reminds you two days before that you have an exam. There are outlines and study goals on BB, and make sure you take online quizzes. You can take tests with other people and receive a better grade.
Worst professor I've had at CMU. He makes the lectures super super boring and have no correlation whatsoever. He is very knowledgable about his field but if you don't like to talk about conservation and policy all day then DO NOT take this class or Dr. Bailey. Haven't learned anything. Tests are written.
