He's a little boring but definitely a good professor. His tests have only 35 multiple choice questions that are straight off the power point lectures. He doesn't take attendance... and he posts all his powerpoints on blackboard. I recommend him!
Very boring but a very good teacher.
Boring, but funny at times. Tests are fair.
This professor is difficult. I am a 4.0 student, but have recieved a B and a C on our exams and C's on the quizzes after having studied and prepared for hours. He tests are difficult, and are certainly not mirrored by his power point presentations.
I would NEVER recommend him!
Do not take him for int'l Economics. Unclear, and does not test what's in book or notes. Funny and very animated nevertheless.
Sooo boring
Borrrrrinnngggg. I had to fight to stay awake. Teaching method is okay...power points dont reflect the tests, and the tests are unclear.
HE IS SOOOOOOOO HARD! I studied for 6 hours before his exam and got a HORRIBLE grade---I KNEW THE MATERIAL!!! His tests, even though they may be multiple choice are by far the hardest I've ever had to deal with. There is no way in deciding which answer is right due to the fact that THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME!!! Don't take him if you want an easy A!
If you go to class, read the book and then study, then you will do fine. He makes real-life examples for everything he covers. Sticks to syllabus wicked well.
for a 400 level class, i don't think he was too hard on us. the only part that sucked was that there were only two exams, so there were 9 chapters covered on each! only one small project though. the course overall was pretty easy, i think he did the best he could considering the tediousness of economics.
His tests are so ambiguous. There's always two answers that say the same thing. It's hard to figure out what he'll concentrate on for easier study and there are no study guides. However, the class is doable, you just have to study your butt off. GOOD LUCK!
Ok, so this class is SUPER Hard!! The tests are hard hard hard! Study well Students.... Read the material and understand all concepts for tests! Prepare every night until test day!
His exams are very tricky, my advice... get the workbook that goes along with the macro text , he says it is optional but a lot of the questions on his exams come from this workbook.
VERRRYYY HARD!!! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! COULDN'T KEEP ME AWAKE! SOO BORING.
Much of the grade is based on tests. Tests can be tricky.
had him for macro -- he was soooo boring. hard to stay awake in his class. he gives study guides, but they arent very specific. exams tricky. didnt fail though - i'm a B - BC, but that's with a LOT of effort.
his class is not hard at all. All you have to do is go to class, take notes and print out the powerpoints. His tests are a piece of cake once u study. He can be boring at times but he's informative/
After taking ECO 204 I thought ECO 205 would be easy. I was so wrong. Beekman makes 205 even harder. His test material is not related to anything we go over in class. He teaches material that is not even covered in the book. His power points are garbage. Stay away from Beekman if you want to get an A.
Not a good teacher at all!!! His test focus too much on knowing the exact material and how to apply it. This basically should be an upper level Economics major course not a general buisness course. Doesn't explain the material very well and he teachs different material then what's in the text book.
An amazing adviser, I recommend him to every Com & PR/ADV major. I have also had him as a professor, he is good but his tests are hard, you stay the entire 4 hours and you will RARELY get out early!
class is real hard... grade is equal to test average and you have a chance to get up to two points added to your final grade (if you come to class).. provides powerpoints and study guides.. really need to learn everything b/c its more of an application class than memorization.. but he's nice and will help.. you'll just need a lot of it.
Follow what instructor says and class will go fine
(macro-eco)Dont take his lectures for granted! Ask questions, sit up front and MOST importantly dont walk out one of his lectures without understanding it! His tests are a challenge so be up for it. good luck!!
bad teach, boring lectures and impossible tests
bad teacher, boring lectures and impossible tests, do not take him
Goofy guy, but a good professor. If you do your weekly online assignment and go to class (with ppt print outs), you'll have no problem understanding it and passing. I never use the book. He's also extremely helpful if you go to him in person.
I liked econ before i took him. His very interested in what he teaches but how he teaches it is not clear. Do the online hw it really boost ur grade. He's ok but i wouldn't recommend him
Personally, I believe he's a really good professor. He tries to explain things in different ways so to try to get everyone to understand it a little better. Lectures can be boring, but if you pay attention and actually listen to what he says, stuff does make sense. He has a bubbly, fun personality and he's willing to help. Do make time to study.
gateways teacher..pretty boring..rambles on, but his intentions were good. if you need help hes there
He is so nice and entertaining, but the material is boring and his classes are hard. He is willing to help you if you ask.
Attendance is recommended because his slides are mostly questions to be answered for which you can know the answers only if you pay attention. Easy "A" if you sincerely prepare answers to the questions in his study guide - with "your own" explanations and examples! Professor is clear in his explanations and helpful too.
Rambles on and on about nonsense. You will learn nothing in this class except how to memorize a bunch of BS and regurgitate it onto the test which is all open ended writing. Clothes are always wrinkled horribly.
Professor Beekman is a good guy, but I really wouldn't recommend him as a professor unless you're an all-star student. He talks non-stop and it's very hard to keep listening and be able to understand what he is teaching, especially for the 300 or higher level classes he teachers. His voice sounds just like woody from toy story
He gives you all this information and expects you to know him as much as he does and succeed at the exams. The classes are not interesting. He is super super nice but he is unnecessarily hard. Doesnt help u with exams and gives up on you easily. Everyone learns differently but he wasnt my kind of learning. But he is an amazing person.
Dr. Beekman is a terrible professor and is extremely self-absorbed as he is more concerned with his lecture than answering student questions. He uses phrases such "like "you know" and "stuff" more than a 13 year old girl and is extremely unprofessional for a Master's level professor. His lectures ramble and are unorganized.
One of the best teachers I have had at UT, pay attention during class, there is never homework due. We do have papers which he grades pretty leniently and his exams are easy if you complete his WHOLE study guide. Yes it takes a long time, but it answers everything you need to know for the test, and he is willing to help answer questions via email
Dr. Beekman is great. I took him for Environmental Econ and it was my easy course for the semester. He is not the clearest teacher but as long as you understand the fundamentals of economics and complete the study guide the course will be a cake walk
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. DO NOT take him. His homework is impossible, and he is of no help. He says its in the textbook but it isn't, the homework is much harder than anything we learn in class. He also does not respond to emails, and always tells you to ask his student assistant for help rather than him. Exams are also really hard
Great teacher! Study Hard Get an A.
Dr. Beekman is the most under rated professor for EC0 640 class. I took him over the summer. Yes, I know why his ratings are bad! People are lazy to prepare for his study guides. When you see it for the first time, everyone gets scared. But, if you simply listen and write what he speaks, you will have to get an A. A super easy grader!!!
Truthfully, I didn't understand the poor reviews for Dr. Beekman. At the graduate level Dr. Beekman was an outstanding professor. He presented economics in a way that was relevant and made sense. Provide you with the study guide, use it! Similar to the previous rater I took the course in the summer and learn a lot. Show up, study, and you'll pass.
Beekman goes on and on twice as long as he needs to in his lectures. Material was interesting, but he talks about a point for so long that it's no longer meaningful - hard not to tune out when this happens. And he says "like, you know" every other sentence - very annoying. Tests aren't bad if you put the time into the study guide.
He rambles a lot.
Dr. Beekman gives a lot of material in a very short amount of time. You need to read the supplemental materials AND the book to know the concepts. The good thing is, if you do the study guides, you will be well-prepared for the exams. Valuable course.
Dr. Beekman uses real world examples and plain language to help you understand the concepts. Reading the text book is very helpful. He gives study guides for you to fill out that will directly correlate with the exam. They may take a long time, but DO THEM. You will go far.
Dr. Beekman is a great teacher, he has taken a lot of time to put the material together and goes into very specific, some times rather long, examples but they are important and helpful. His study guides are also very detailed and if you take the time to do them and study from them you will do fine on the tests. Overall loved the class.
The class is incredibly boring. However, he is a funny guy. If you participate in class (literally talk to him about anything), it will be more fun than if you just sit and stare. There are only two exams so do well on them. He gives a study guide so they should be easy. There is also a final project. Worth 30% each. HW and participation is 10%
Great lectures. Tests are based off of the lectures. Take notes and you should do well on the tests.
great teacher, makes it super easy. use the study guides and you're golden
Great professor, the program is so well structured and designed, follow his materials and listen to his class, its an easy A if you put enough efforts. I learnt a lot in his class
I am an econ major so I actual enjoy econ which definitely helps with getting through nearly 2 hours of straight lecture. It can get hard to stay focused at times but it is especially important to pay attention to examples in order to do well on the tests. Class is 3 tests with easy online hw and quizzes along with a 500 word paper.
talks 98% of the time in class; he provides so much information he runs out of time within a 4hr period. 3 exams; study guide has about 100 questions, he will only ask 10 out of 100. Provides 10 HW writing assignments, but not worth much, each about 5-10pts. Exams are the only grades, fail two, you failed. Great if your background is economics.
Professor Beekman is a great professor for economics. He gives very relevant examples to explain the topics. There are weekly HW assignments and tests but they are very short and if you glance over the text it should be very easy. I would 100% recommend this class to anyone who has to take economics.
I DON'T RECOMMEND. HE GETS ON MY NERVES. HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HIS STUDENTS AT ALL. HE DOES NOT WANT ANYONE TO SUCCEED. NEVER REPLIES TO HIS EMAILS. DON'T EVEN WASTE YOUR TIME AND SEND THIS MALLS SANTA CLAUSE AN EMAIL YOU WILL BE LEFT ON READ. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND FIND A PROFESSOR WHO ACTUALLY CARES.
Beekman can be really long winded so if you can't deal with that I wouldn't recommend him, but he really does drive the information in by the end of class cause he repeats things with so many different examples/graphs, etc. He's not very personable but he gets to the point and doesn't make you do a bunch of pointless bs. Little dry but not bad
Enrolled during Summer-1; lots of reading and homework material up front. Exams are heavy, provides study guides, please attempt to answer every question on the study guide. he will ask about 100 questions and only ask 10 on the exam. Exam is handwritten only. If you do the study guide ON TIME, youshould pass. email him questions, he values it
Dr. Beekman is a solid professor. His lectures can be long, but his obvious enthusiasm for the subject makes the time pass well enough. The class is passable if you actually show up, really listen to what he says, and by all means... DO THE EXAM REVIEW. If you do it and study that, you will pass, if not, you will have a tough road ahead of you.
Avoid his class at all costs 3 exams make up the entire grade. Purposely makes this class hard because he is irritated with college students "slacking" after covid. Talks about the same example every class and you end up teaching yourself. Bought 90 dollar textbook he says "doesnt help" and the homework that is in it, is only worth 6% of your grade
I was nicer on the ratings because he is passionate about the subject, but his lectures are hard to follow because they are so long and he goes off topic. Barely goes over what is gonna be on the test and there is only 3. Pearson hw and quizzes literally do nothing for ur grade. Tests are so hard and feel insanely hard compared to lectures.
He's a nice guy, and he's passionate about econ. However, I would NOT recommend. His lectures are long and hard to follow. Homework/essay is only 6% of your grade, so you basically have to do really well on exams. His exams are hard, and he doesn't provide any examples of exam questions. He's just not for me. Don't expect an easy A or even B.
Took this class as an allied health major and it was tough. Prof Beekman is very passionate about microeconomics however it-s easy to get lost in his lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory but you will be lost if you miss class. His 3 exams were nearly 80% of your grade so its tough to pass if you do poorly on the exams.
2 exams and 1 group project. He's super passionate and interesting. He keeps you the full 4 hours. He'll give you no hw for weeks and then you have to study like crazy for his exams and do a 12pg research paper. Do his exam study guides, it's a lot but 100% worth it. His class is great albeit stressful--you learn a lot and I did love the class.
Super nice guy, but the lectures were so boring. He would talk about 1 slide for 20-25 minutes, so as you can imagine, most of the classes ran the entire time. Clear expectations, but only 4 grades for the entire semester makes it difficult to manage if you do poorly on one thing. Knows his stuff and is accessible outside of class.
Dude goes on and on in lecturers provides you with absolutely no test questions or quizzes. Hw throughout the year is worth 6% of your grade. Tests are so hard and
Professor Beekman is a very nice guy. He is always willing to help you outside class and quickly responds to emails, but his lectures are incredibly dull and hard to follow. Also, his grading margins are beyond ridiculous. The 3 exams are worth almost 90% of your final grade, so if you are not a good test taker then I wouldn't recommend taking him.
No words other than awful
Worst professor i've had. Does not care to help you, lectures every class, no extra credit and doesn't count all of the grades on the assignments done through pearson. Tends to go off topic during lectures and is just so confusing and puts you to sleep. He is the reason I am failing this class. Do NOT take him.
so boring. talks at .3 mph. his exams are nothing like what he teaches in class. absolutely awful do not take.
SOOOOO boring. he just talks for a the whole class and makes no sense. your only grades are 4 tests that are impossible. do not take him
People say that his class is boring, but in fact, they are not at all if you're interested in economics. If you wanna succeed, you should talk to him and ask him questions during office hours. If you don't reach out to him, he doesn't know how to help you. But if you try hard, he'll make sure you understand and succeed in his class. Take with him!
He is a great lecturer but the class is difficult. You will be graded on 3 exams- worth 27% or 30% of your grade each. Make sure to study early, use the reviews he sends out, and go to office hours. Attendance is not mandatory but if you skip class you will be way behind.
Best professor I've had at UT so far! He actually made me realize that I want to major in economics. It is a tough class, but if you do the exam reviews, go to his office, and try to follow him during lectures, you should be fine! I found this class extremely interesting and if I could go back I would still choose him!
Very passionate prof. Class was way harder than my other core COB ones (including macro). He was accessible outside of class. I would recommend this class if you're a good test taker but not otherwise.
Professor Beekman is very easy to explain. Class twice a week, 2 hours of lecturing, not a second break, reprimands you for using the restroom on occasion, repeat. Every single class was a lecture other than test days. Homework is irrelevant. If you take notes and study the homework is completely pointless. You could still get an A doing none of it
Best professor at UT! He is very knowledgeable and has a lot of working experience (Environmental Protection Agency). He explains things well and gives you good examples. Very patient and accessible outside of class. His exams are fair if you study. You can do well if you understand the concept and pay attention to his lectures. Take him!
Do not have your phone or earbuds within his eyeline as he will call you out. Attendance is not mandatory however he rarely posts extra info to canvas. Grade is based entirely on 3 tests.
Professor Beekman is very demanding but if you pay attention during class and follow his directions you will be just fine. He is incredibly knowledgeable and always provide a lot of examples to make the concepts more digestible to students.
You can miss every class and still pass . For me his lectures only confused me about what I already knew and he makes up examples that dont connect to his topic sometimes. He will stop teaching to call out students on their phone. However if you actually take the time to study his study guide you will pass the exams. Exams make up your entire grade
Talked for the entirety of the period every class, and taught in a way that only made sense to him and going to office hours doesn't help. More than half my class withdrawaled from this class.
He talks a lot.
Talks so much, class always goes the full time. Grade is based off basically 3 tests. It's not a terrible class but you need to actually study for these tests and do well to pass the class.
rambles a lot and doesn't provide any extra info other than what he says in class. can be difficult to study for exams as powerpoints barely have any information. grade is based on 3 exams. would not recommend unless you like hearing about one example for two hours
beekman treats his students as if they are high schoolers. the class doesn't feel like a college classroom at all. he spent too much time on the most basic stuff that i already know. his exams are not difficult, multiple choice questions are fair but boring and stressful. he doesn't encourage students to learn. no practice questions or homeworks
Great professor and very passionate about the subject, but talks a LOT. Graded by only 3 total exams.
Nice guy, super intelligent but almost too smart to teach. I had his class at 8am and he lectures for an hour and fifty minutes straight with no breaks. Does not do any in class activities literally just lectures and its painful to sit through the class. there is only 3 or 4 grades that go into the gradebook total for the entire semester.
