Professor Betz is a stickler for class attendance and participation, but despite this, the class was not too demanding. Overall, the amount of material is fairly light, and many class sessions were cancelled over the semester. The exams and readings were brief and easy. Also a vital class which everyone should take.

Great Class. If you do the work and go to class, you'll do great.

Dr.Betz is great! All of his material and instructions are straight forward. REad the book (its not too much reading), take some notes and participate. YOu'll learn a lot and have fun, too. The class is awesome.

One of the best professors at GW. Made class interesting despite his little quiz. Im an 05 graduate and hes actually one of the few professors I have to say who "inspired" me or at least left an impact. He is a challenge, so if you're not into that don't take him. Otherwise, be prepared to learn from one of the best. Great teacher and human being.

Professor is national-level health care expert with no equal in department. Seminar format means one should read ahead, answer questions, and lead discussions during every class. Quiz questions might preceed syllabus; try to read at least one class ahead. No material from Weissert appears on tests. Take if interested in health care.

Dr. Betz will definitely challenge you. He is a good teacher and is also very approachable. I would recommend to any student at GW, who hasn't already taken a class with him, to do so. Shakings and Happenings...

Professor Betz is without a doubt, one of the best professors that GW has. A world class health care policy expert, Betz makes the class fun and interesting. I have learned more in his class, than any other course since I have been at GW. I would strongly suggest this professor to any student interested in health care policy or needing a wid class.

Betz is absolutely the best professor the poli sci department has. He is smart and teaches a great class. Just show up and do the readings.

My favorite class and professor at GWU so far. Betz is very fair, and genuinely cares about his students. For anyone interested in health policy, and willing to do the work, you MUST take this class. It's a lot of work: 2 exams, 3 papers, and about 150 pages of weekly reading... But so worth it.

Great Prof. Take this class. 5 point daily quizes on the reading, but theyre easy. U should do the readings, but in the event that you dont you can still do well on the quizes theyre basic. The midterm is 50 mc, pretty easy just look over you notes. Betz is something of a comedian, you will enjoy going to class. Take this class you wont regret it.

Dr. Betz is helpful, clear, and intelligent. I've taken Health Care Policy and State and Urban Policy Problems with Dr. Betz. He expects you to work hard and give him your best effort. Dr. Betz cares about his students and is an expert in his field, which is evident in his lectures. The policy paper he assigns is an asset. Take his class!

Prof. Betz is AMAZING. He is one of the few professors that I had who encouraged you to push yourself. The content in his classes are interesting, and prevalent to what is going on in public policy. I would highly recommend taking this class if you want to learn something valuable, and WELL worth the GW tuition.

Dr. Betz is an incredibly knowledgeable health care public policy professor. He owns his health care consulting firm and is well respected in DC. Betz is not a career Professor. By this I mean he is not financially dependent on teaching but truly does it because he loves teaching and is dedicated toward bettering the community through educating.

Dr Betz is amazing! healthcare policy has been by far one of the most interesting courses taught at GW and the learning experience was invigorating and the content very relevant to current policy-making decisions. With good attendance, class participation and regular group study policy discussions you have a good shot of doing well in this class.

I took State & Urban Policy as well as Health Care Policy. Professor Betz was my favorite professor at GW. I wish more professors were as knowledgable about their subject and set high standards like he did. While he requires a lot from his students, he is a fair grader and will take the time to make sure a topic is fully understood.

Dr. Betz was one of the my favorite professors I had during my time at GW. As someone who went into the field in which he taught post-graduation, I have a greater appreciation of the value of Betz's emphasis on practical skills (writing policy analyses, reaching out to experts, etc.) in his class. Professor Betz is my favorite political science professor. There is a quiz every class with two major assignments and the final. Grades only in solid letter grades (A,B,C,D) For my Policy Briefing Paper, I wrote on a subject that interested me and talked about it in an interview for an internship which I ultimately got! And STUDY for the FINAL!!!

Currently the best professor I have had at GW. cares about his students and respects them, and expects respect in return. Honesty is the number one policy. If you plan on slacking don't take this class. Show up for daily quizzes, but they are very easy if you have done the readings. Hopefully I will have opportunity to take another class with him.

A real salt of the Earth kind of guy. Extremely tough and passionate, he expects his students to take the class seriously because he takes teaching so seriously. You'll learn a ton and much of what he teaches will stick with you for years to come. He wants everyone to succeed, but he is NOT easy.

Professor Betz is by far the most incredible professor I have ever had. If you can, take him for Health Care Policy. I have not had a professor have a more profound effect on my life in my 4 years of Undergrad. This class is by no means easy, but it is so worth it. The way he lectures keeps students engaged, and he always leaves time for discussion.

Professor Betz is one of my two favorite professors at GW. This was my second class with him and I would take a third one if I could. He is a down-to-earth guy who loves teaching and it shows. Yes, he is harder than some but if you do the work and put in the time you will pass. Take the briefing papers seriously, they can pay off dividends later.

Dr. Betz is a well-respected, fair, and intense professor. He does not use any technology during class and does not provide handouts so it is important to take notes. The two assessments are a policy paper and a final exam. Some helpful tips would be to start the paper early in the semester and write down all the quizQs will be helpful for final.

Professor Betz is an incredible guy, but youre either going to hate him or love him, and thatll probably take a few weeks to figure out. The skills you learn with the paper are great, but the feedback on the paper is lackluster. Watch out for the daily quiz grades.

He's super intimidating on the 1st day. However, this class turned out to be the best class I have taken at GW. Dr. Betz is incredibly intelligent and genuine. The knowledge from this course has stuck with me! Walked out the final thinking I failed it, aside from the free response. MC q's were weird. Put effort into your papers & get to know him.

This class is the best class I have ever taken at GW. Prepare for quizzes and copy the quiz questions/answers- this can be beneficial when studying for the exam. Work hard on papers and keep the feedback from your drafts in mind when editing your final drafts. If you put the effort in, you'll be fine.

Professor Betz is an excellent example of a professor who genuinely cares about the well-being, success, and effort of each of his students. While he grades based on relatively few assignments, if you do the work and don't procrastinate too much, it's not hard to get a good grade. Speak up during "shakings and happenings"!

Great class, great professor. One big policy briefing paper with an emphasis on learning the structure of a briefing paper, which was very helpful. Everything was very manageable. Just make sure to be prepared for quizzes at the beginning of every class.

He tries to be intimidating on day 1 to get people who want to coast through the class to quit - don't let him scare you. If every prof were like Betz, the world would be a better place. Hes inspirational. Basically do well on the daily quizzes and youll get an A. Policy briefing paper is done incrementally. YOU WILL LOOK FORWARD TO CLASE EVERY DAY. Cant recommend enough. One downside is that ther are no plus or minuses grades. Just flat A, B, C, etc.

Professor Betz is one of the best professors at GW. I took him for both both PSC 3192W (Inter-generational Policy) and State and Urban Public Policy. From the first day he makes clear that he treats his students with respect and while a lot of teachers say they believe it is honor to teach, he truly believes it.

Prof. Betz will try to scare you on the first class, but he's genuinely a really nice guy. Engaging lectures and class discussions and a practical final policy briefing memo that leaves you with a real-world skill. Took class over the summer - it was intense but doable. There is a quiz every day based off of the readings. He is an easy grader for the research paper and projects but watch out for the final. He tries to scare you on the first day but is rather chill for the rest of the semester.

The reading load is pretty intense, and the viciously hard exams mean you have to do all of it with notes and everything. BUT he made sure it was a really interesting textbook that made it all fly by. idk how much the study group helped, it's definitely a scenario where the chain is only as strong as its weakest link. I took State and Urban Policy Problems with Dr. Betz. Even if you arent super interested in the material, the opportunity to study under Dr. Betz is one you cannot miss. He will make you interested in the material. This is a professor with real experience in the field, who respects students as intellectuals, and truly cares about what hes doing.

Professor Betz was my state and urban policy professor. He had great knowledge in that field and respected all his students as intellectuals. He wants you to succeed in life and learn more in his classroom than just the basic material. The best part of the class was his daily shakings and happenings, where we talked about the news of the world.

I had Professor Betz for the first part of my spring 2020 semester and then for the transition online and he is absolutely amazing! In person, he's animated and keeps your interest, and is just as good online! Classes were asynchronous, but he had you post on discussion boards and gave really great feedback. He can be stern, but so so kind!!

This class was one of the only ones I was able to consistently pay attention in through this online format. He doesn't put grades in which is annoying, but if you email him he will tell you your current grade. Also an A is a 90!

Class time is used for lectures. Grade is based on participation, an up-to-20 page research paper, and a short-essay style final exam. Research paper is on how policy is made in a designated US state. Lectures were a bit dry, but he added in some personal stories. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students. Definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed taking Professor Betz class on Intergenerational Politics. He led the class well and was very respectful of all of his students. The class had quite a bit of work but was a WID class which means the professor is required to give a solid amount of writing. Overall, I learned a lot and really enjoyed the professor.

Intimidating at first but expectations are very clear. Easy A if you follow the instructions well. Participation really matters to make the course enjoyable. He takes attendance every lecture. Does not read from a PowerPoint, but reads from his notes. Great guy, cant really go wrong taking this course. I would appreciate it though if gave us the grades as we went along throughout the course, so we dont have to be surprised at the end.

Professor Betz has got to be one of the best professors in the GW Political Science department. There are readings assigned from two books each class, but his lectures are basically a repetition of the readings. Participation makes the class even better and he is a very interesting individual. You won't regret taking his class.

Professor Betz is very caring and has a lot of great insight. I learned a lot from his class and enjoyed going. There is a policy brief that is very helpful for poli sci majors. Attendance, group presentation, and a final are the other grades. My only issue is I had no idea what I earned for any of my grades. He only submits your overall.

Betz is good and bad. He gives very information rich, highly detailed lectures that he just reads off his notes, never posting lecture slides. He is clearly highly knowledgeable and charismatic, but is very serious about academic integrity and his rigorous standards for assignments. You will learn a lot in this class, but you will do a lot of work.

Professor Betz is most certainly one of the best! He is very intentional in his "no technology" rule for the course as he wants to encourage lively discussion. He also has a great sense of humor! Betz is hands-down one of the most enjoyable professors I've had within the Political Science department at GW. I loved our class structure which allowed us to speak and get to know our classmates. We had daily news briefings and quizzes, a group project, a policy briefing paper, and a final. I learned a ton about state and urban politics.

It was not easy but definitely rewarding and the skills I learn will help me in the future. 3 projects, 1 exam, daily quizzes. I'll be honest, it took me a while to get used to Dr. Betz's style of teaching. The lectures can be a bit dry and the content a bit repetitive... but Betz himself is knowledgable, energetic, and passionate. The grading is pretty easy as long as you follow guidelines. He's a genuinely nice guy who cares a lot about his students.

Hands down the best professor I have had thus far. The guy has a great sense of humor to balance the dense lectures. There are really only three assignments, the policy paper, policy presentation, and final so they are pretty hefty but not due till the last month or two. If you get started on them early you will do fine.

Betz is a professor that cares about his students, but this was by far the hardest class I have ever taken at GWU. In one semester I wrote roughly 60 pages over 3 assignments, in addition to readings and studying for a final exam. You will learn a lot throughout the semester, but unless you have a lot of time, I would not take this course.

Spring 2023 - Professor Betz is quite honestly the best Poli Sci Professor at GW. He goes above and beyond for his students and has very clear guidelines to do well. As long as he can tell you really tried with your assignments, he's a generous grader.

By far the most interesting class I've ever taken at GW. Betz is a solid teacher, but occasionally his lectures can get a little bland. There is a TON of writing, even for a WID, but he's a very easy grader and as long as you meet expectations you get full credit. By far my favorite class! Dr. Betz was intimidating at first, but as it went on, I looked forward to his class every week! Participate, participate, participate! Betz is one of the most amazing professors at GW. His way of lecturing isn't the best, but class discussions and the insight he gives make it super interesting. He's not the most timely grader, but his assignments are clearly spelled out and very engaging. Cannot recommend him enough!

Professor Betz has been among my favorite professors at GW. His classes provide first-hand knowledge of their subject matters and he is straightforward regarding class material. He also takes some time in class to discuss current events with students which I find to be exceedingly important in getting to know both the professor and fellow students.

A good person and a respected professor. You are going to learn a lot in both academic and professor perspectives for any class that he offers. Has a great humor and once saw a bear ride a bicycle which is critically important.

Took State & Urban, then Politics of Water (WID) with Dr. Betz! He's really kind, genuinely roots for his students' success, & will actually teach you job-relevant writing skills unlike in other classes (policy brief!). I took his WID during a rough personal semester (had to take an Incomplete); he was super accommodating, just talk to him!

Dr. Betz is a great professor who is truly student centered. He cares profoundly about supporting students in their academic and career development, and he is an amazing resource if you seek his guidance! PSC2212 is interesting and engaging - lots of opportunities for discussion and an opportunity to write a policy brief on a topic of your choice.

He's a funny man who knows his stuff. He expects a lot but only because he respects our ability. I would die for him.

Professor Betz's PSC2217 is a solid pick. He's knowledgeable and engaging, though lectures can be unorganized. Assignments are challenging but fair - just stay on top of readings and try unstuck ai alongside other study tools. Overall, a rewarding class.

Really really funny guy, he is an expert in what he teaches. As long as you put in some work and are kind and respectful, this class will be a breeze. He makes class so enjoyable and I have found the assignments to be so interesting. Attendance is mandatory though, so make sure you go to class

Dr. Betz is the greatest professor I have ever had. I have taken both Executive Branch Politics and State & Urban Policy Problems with him and would HIGHLY recommend both. His classes are interactive and enjoyable and I feel as though the assignments have drastically improved my professional writing ability.

20% attendance, 30% paper, 20% group presentation, 30% final - super engaging lectures, daily quizzes aren't graded and participating in daily news discussion helps grade. he guides you thru the paper & is vague about the presentation but he's an easy grader. can skip some readings but the final is 100 mcqs, study groups are super helpful

It is clear that Betz truly cares about his students and their opinions, spends 20-30 minutes a class on a discussion of current events. Paper and presentation instructions are a bit vague, but he is an easy grader. Daily quizzes are not graded and questions will reappear on the final. Overall great guy and great class!

Take Professor Betz's class, he's amazing. The first day was intimidating but trust me, he is the most caring and extraordinary professor. Daily quizzes (don't stress), daily shakings and happenings (current events), a policy briefing paper, and a final. He has a great life story and is a great professor. Take his class if you have the opportunity.

Professor Betz is one of the best professors at GW! I learned a lot in his class from the lectures to discussions. He cares about his students and is available if you need help. Make sure to complete readings before class and be ready to write!

Took this class last sem, I submitted a shortened version of our policy briefing paper for an internship application (not even directly in government) and they were super impressed with it! Betz is awesome and while the actual content is a little dry his lecturing, insights + the assignments are great. Don't forget to copy down all the quiz qs

The textbooks are boring and kinda suck but Dr. Betz is wonderful. The most engaging lecturer I've ever had. He seems a bit eccentric at first, but it's all part of the southern charm. Clearly passionate about teaching as a profession and loves his students. Whenever possible, get him to tell stories instead of lecturing from the book!
