He is partial to male opinion, and believes it's his way or the high way. He is a very critical man, and a hard teahcer. He isn't afraid to make you feel like crap. Good luck w/ this guy.
One of the best teachers at John Carroll, not the easiest, but he sure knows his stuff.
He is not a nice man. His male preferance is obvious. I believe he wants his students to do poor because he does not grade reasonably. I have no problem getting a bad grade when I deserve it, but when the grade is unfair there is a problem.
He is a good teacher, but extremely tough and can put students down at times.
Exhibiting male preference is an understatement...by far my hardest course, my largest time commitment, and my lowest grade...he took a significant amount of time away from my other courses...he's outright rude and mean to students...a very unfair grader
There is a distinct difference between being a difficult teacher and a difficult person. Instead of challenging his students, Bloom belittles them as students. Grr. Just. Grr.
this man still lives with his mother
He knows his stuff very well. You have to take good notes and keep up with the reading and homeworks. He is a hard teacher but manageable.
one word to describe him: ****!
awful
He's a decent guy. To do well in his class, be male and wear collared shirts.
No, he doesn't exhibit male preference. He hates on everyone equally. He's tough..but you know exactly where you stand and know exactly what is expected of you. If he thinks you are an idiot after the first few weeks he will either ignore you or publically ridicule you throughout the semester.
If you don't need to be an accounting major....DO NOT take the man. He has no people skills and is not afraid to tell you that you will fail. If you need help ,don't go to him b/c he couldn't care less. Did i mention he still lives with his mom?
Anyone who hates Bloom probably didn't pay attention in class. The man' a bit squirrely and odd, but he knows his stuff like the back of his hand. So good a teacher that I changed my major from Marketing to Finance, AND dared to take the second semester of his class. Take him to learn... not get by.
This guy is a travesty to the acct dept. They wonder why so many ppl have dropped accounting majors, and I bet it's because of Bloom. He is an extremely difficult human being. He has ZERO sympathy for his students. DO NOT TAKE HIM!! He will DESTROY your GPA. i went from 3.9 to 2.7 b/c of his class.
He's a good prof and you will learn a lot, but his constant interrogation of what you did just pissed me off. It really made me hate accounting. His tests are impossible. Very unsociable. Seems like he should be doing boring accounting work instead of teaching kids.
Bloom teaches by intimidation. I was lucky b/c I just happen to "get" accouting.. but I felt bad for those who didn't. Even if you are a genius you will not get an A in this class. His tests are purposely impossible, and his lectures are brief and confusing. Reading the book carefully is necessary.
First "weed out" class I have seen in a grad program. The guy hates people and lies about what will be on his exams, Flat out lies!
Can't believe they let people like him teach. What a nightmare, don't think he really cares about his students. Nothing constructive or any encouraging ever come out of his mouth. "I don't think any of you look too promising in my class" that was only the second week of class!!
Hard tests. Lectures very very boring (but i guess all accounting lectures would be). only grades are tests, and homework. no big paper. Find someone easier esspecially if you don't understand accounting.
Very Errogant, not easy to get along with, lacks in all aspects of people skills. If he knows so much about accounting and is so good at it, then why isn't he an accountant?
Bloom is awesome. I don't know why everyone hates him so much. If you aren't stupid he's cool. He's like 60 give him a break on being a boring guy, his sense of humor is funny
What a jerk! No help at all. Tells us that book is never enough to understand the material. Also tell us that if we look sad that would affect our grade in class. Gives examples that's no where to be found to help with udnerstanding. Not fit to teach at all. Don't waste money on taking his class.

THE WORST TEACHER EVER.HIS WAS THE FIRST CLASS I EVER HAD TO DROP. DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET OUT OF IT. UNLESS YOU KNOW ACCOUTING ALREADY YOUR IN TROUBLE. YOU DONT WANT THIS GUY!!!!
The tests were not in line with the practice work. They were much more difficult. Not enough time was allowed for the them except for the final. The text, not well organized, did not have enough practice problems. His essays were confusing. He did not give the assignment of reviewing a company all at once, so it was difficult to organize
There is a substantial amount of students who struggle, but if you are smart you will get on his good size. He is incredibly smart and a learned more in that class than any other at John Carroll. If your smart you can easily get an A.
Class isn't as hard as it is made out to be. Does have favorites and can pick on struggling students. Objective parts of tests are easy but the essay portion(usually 10%) he grades very hard
Worst teacher ever!!!!! Boring as a rock with moss growing on it. Very bitter old man, makes fun of students. Tests are pretty tough, homework everynight, at least one hour of questions. Had homework assigned due on first day of class!
WORST TEACHER EVER! If you dont understand he won't help and will pretty much just say your dumb and wont like you. He grades unfair and expects every answer to have every single detail in it. I would NEVER recommend him!
I loved Dr. Bloom. He is not the guy you want to take if you want an easy ride through class. He requires work, but he also rewards those who show hard work and shows that they are at least trying. He really means well, and wants to make sure that his students succeed. He is extremely smart, and very helpful. Truly a great guy.
Dr. Bloom is the****of the walk baby. The class is tough
Wosrt ever. Degrades you and makes you feel worthless. Not helpful and just plain weird.
Very tough but you learn
Ok this guy is just odd. I statred off in him class absolutely hating him. By the end he was nicer...just be freindly to him and go see him and the tutors. If he tells you to attend both of his classes dont be offened he tells everyone that. His tests are exactly what he says will be on them so just study and dont think you know it.
mmmmmm peas
this guy is horrible. hes totally unclear in class and makes people feel stupid. teaching style is bad too. you come out of class knowning nothing. you are better off reading the book and taking the test blind. bottom line stay away from this guy!
You become a warrior after leaving Bloom's 304 class.
Dr. Bloom is the best accounting professor at JCU when it comes to students actually learning the material. His class is no cake walk, but I LOVED it. Dr. Bloom certainly made it interesting. He has dry humor, but it is funny. He is more than willing to help out his students during office hours. If you want to pass the CPA exam, take him!!!
Awful, not much more can describe this. Doesn't actually teach anything, just puts up homework answers and expects you to understand how they were done. If you get them wrong he tells you you should go back to 202. No structure to the class and tons of homework. Never experienced a professor this terrible.
This guy was so boring to listen to and totally discouraging...if you have him you better spend a lot of time teaching yourself because you'll never understand from him.
Awful. This man should not be a professor. Doesn't teach material and puts students down if they dont understand it. Why would we go here if we could learn on our own?
Any prospective accounting major should take Dr. Bloom. He makes you learn the material inside and out. If you want to do well in upper AC courses, take him in 202/203 it will pay off in the long run. By far, one of the best professors at JCU.
Bloom is part of the reason JCU is a great school. He keeps class hard so JCU grads match up with the best.
I WOULD NOT WISH THE EXPERIENCE I HAD IN HIS CLASS ON MY WORST ENEMY!! HE ASSIGNED FOUR TEN PAGE PAPERS IN FYS!! MAKES GIRLS CRY AND EVERYONE ELSE FEEL LIKE AN IDIOT.
Dr. Bloom is one of the mist highly regarded accounting professors in the country. Obviously, if you don't have what it takes or don't care to be an accounting major, don't take him. His class is very hard, and chances are the people that are complaining are dumb. I hope none of you ever work for me on an audit. I don't hold hands...
I only have Bloom as an advisor and I hate him, i cant even imagine how he is as a teacher, i even hate meeting with him to talk about what classes i should take, hes a jerk
Because of FYS, my GPA was brought down. I am a good writer and understand texts easily, but your opinion is WRONG in Bloom's FYS class. If you don't agree with him or have another opinion, you are automatically wrong. He is an unfair grader and the only funny part about class is laughing at his ridiculous comments. O yea, and he makes girls cry
I don't doubt he knows his material inside and out and that his class is hard. That isn't what makes a teacher great, it's how well he is able to get students to understand the info and he falls short. If you're an AC major, take him, if not avoid him. There are better ways to learn the material. Classes shouldn't be frustrating but educational
Dr. Bloom is great, just beware that his 303 and 304 classes are easily some of the most difficult in the entire school. Keeps JCU accounting on top.
Puts sticky notes on a document camera as a means of teaching. Checks homework daily. Poor style of teaching/communicating. Class includes group project.
Dr. Bloom needs everything to be done exactly how he wants it and not how the book explains it. If he asks to sum up an answer in 3 sentences he really wants a whole essay on it.
If you don't study for class he will tear you apart and tell you straight up that you need to switch majors. Tests are easier than quizzes.
Avoid at all costs. I have no doubt that this guy is an accounting genius but his entry level accounting class is impossible. Average test grades are around a 65. Also, he makes you afraid to answer questions in class by making you look dumb in front of the class.
THE WORST TEACHER! Im sorry but for $40,000 I expect to learn. Its a 201 class not a 500 level. Had the audacity to announce in front of everyone that you are struggling. Waste of time. The guy has no life and needs to get off his high horse. Dont take him...if you do you will drop it. Guy thinks he is the almighty. JOKE
Avoid taking. Simply checks the homework assigned and Uses notes scribbled on paper to teach. Expects students to be able to memorize the entire book.
Professor Bloom is easily the most difficult, unapproachable and demanding professor I have ever had in my entire life. That being said, I would take him for every single class I ever have began never have I learned so much in a single class. If you're serious about accounting at all, take him. He's the best of the best.
It's all about going into the class with the right mindset. Bloom is not impossible; he expects alot of his students. Read the book before he goes over the material in class and you will be fine. Take good notes b/c quizzes come straight from his lectures. Go see him in his office...he really is a nice guy.
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE...goes very fast, and concepts are impossible to grasp from his teaching. Makes you look like a fool in front of the class if you get answers wrong, and gets mad when you are unsure of something. Expects WAY too much for an intro course. PS: Alot of the concepts on the exams come out of nowhere and arent ever covered in class!!
hardest teacher in the business school made a 201 class unreasonable to take should of looked on this website before taking
Dr. Bloom wants his students to understand the material. He is not impossible. Not everyone at JCU can be an accounting major, and he wants to make sure that the best are representing JCU out in the accounting world. Go see him, do the homework, and take good notes and the class will not be impossible.
Dr. Bloom is brilliant, and prepares you for the brutal world of public accounting. If you can't make it in his class, you'll never make it as an auditor. Keeps JCU on top.
class is hard, not impossible. stay on top of the readings, and look at the study guide in the office- you will do ok. He is a nice guy but expects 200% from everyone.
Bloom is the worst type of guy. Class mostly consists of cold calls and calling his students out. I definitely would not recommend him to anyone. He keeps everyone on their toes which is good because it forces you to pay attention but he is way too intimidating for anyone who is not extremely serious about accounting.
People hate on Dr. Bloom because he doesn't teach well and is extremely hard. He can teach accounting if he wanted but instead he wants to teach you how to teach yourself (that's not a bad thing). If you plan on majoring in acc. I reccomend taking him in 201 so you get a feel for what he expects, otherwise good luck in acc 304, you are in for it.
Mind blown by the difficulty of this mans class. Started laughing while he was returning the first quiz because the average was a 40. He couldn't ace his own class
No doubt the best teacher I've ever had when it comes to learning and understanding course material. He will drill you in class a lot. You can't hide. He is very tough & demanding from his students. If you want to be an accounting major he's a must take IMO. Anyone else who isn't serious about accountingschool work in general should steer clear.
Dr. Bloom is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. The clarity with which he teaches is unparalleled and will teach you the material down the last detail. He is however a very tough grader so do not expect to get an A in his class. However, expect to learn accounting in great detail from one of the best professors there is.
I don't know why everyone thinks this class is so hard. Just pay attention, take notes, participate, and you will get an A. By far the easiest class I have had so far at JCU.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Go to his office hours and work with other people to clarify material. Good luck.
304 is not easy by any means. The best way to pass is to get on Dr. Bloom's good side by participating in class. The only way to do this is to do some reading and talk to him outside of class.
He is very blunt and does not try to hide his disappointment when you are incorrect. It is very hard, but if you do the readings and work before class and use the study guide before exams, it's not impossible. I regularly studied at least 15 hours before even quizzes so be prepared to buckle down and dedicate your life if you're an AC major
This guy CANNOT teach, he will never teach you the materials, you have to read the book, try to understand the concepts, and then when you are in the class, the way he teaches is by asking questions, and he expects everyone to know the exactly answer, otherwise he will show his disappointment in you. Wish there is another teacher teach 304
they call him the gatekeeper. he guards the entrance to heaven and you cannot enter if he is there. you are guaranteed to fail. If you're up for the challenge take him.
Probably the best professor I have ever had! He is life changing and now accounting is my world! Take him if you have the chance. He is excellent and makes students reach their full potential. He is very helpful in class and with all assignments. He always gives excellent feedback. Always use a pencil too!!
Dr. Bloom is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Extremely demanding and rude. No people skills whatsoever. Glad I switched majors and schools.
Dr. Bloom is an amazing professor. However, his class is difficult and will take up your free time. I took him for AC201, and it allowed me to easily coast through my next two accounting classes with an A.
The reason John Carroll's accounting program is impressive as it is. Dr. Bloom is brilliant and knows everything there is about accounting, which is why he expects the same from you. Go to his office hours outside of class, show that you're willing to work hard and participate in class and he will pass you. Very difficult, but you learn a lot.
Dr. Bloom is extremely tough but he is definitely worth the time and effort. Many Carroll grads have mentioned that having Dr. Bloom has helped them pass the CPA exam so much easier because of his teaching. Attend both sections for Bloom and participate as much as you can and you will be fine. Just put in the work and have a good mindset!
Dr. Bloom is one of the hardest teachers I've ever had. However, I respect the hell out of him. He makes you prove yourself and rightfully so because he is so good at his field. You'll hate him during class but love him afterwords because he makes you better. Genuinely wants you to succeed but you have to 150% really work for it. Nice guy.
Dr. Blooms class has many students drop out every semester he teacher. He is know for being a hard grader. He assigns homework every night and has harder tests than every other accounting teacher. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The only reason to take this class is if you want to go crazy or you are amazing at accounting and want to test yourself.
Youll regret it
I am so disgusted in John Carroll for having this awful man teach here. He embarrasses, humiliates, and degrades his students constantly. You sit in his class to get bullied by him everyday. There are horrendous reviews on here that date back to 2003 about this man and JCU still doesnt get it?
Dr Bloom's class (AC304) is one of the hardest classes i've ever taken. He is a good teacher and knows what he's talking about. Do your homework, learn the material and go visit him in his office hours. He wants to help those who want help.
One of the hardest professors I've ever had, but if you want to learn Accounting, take him. If you're not an Accounting major, you should probably avoid him. Bland, boring, and a hard grader. Test and quizzes are unreasonably hard and there is no curve. Requires hard work, but you will learn accounting. He doesn't mind failing people either
His lectures are the priority and you have to fill in the gaps with the textbook. You have to use his EXACT terminology on quizzes, tests and when he calls on you in class (RIP). You literally have to hang on to his every word in class which is difficult. At the end of the day its a miserable semester and youll realize why Cs get degrees.
Have to take him as accounting major. By far hardest teacher I ever had. He is ultra specific on quizzes and tests. Go to his office hours and tutors (he asks who goes to the tutors) to get on his good side. He will for sure pass you if you do. I am a straight A student and got a B- so prepare for not the best grade. Do exactly what he says!
This dude just sucks. Students will ask a question and he will yell at them for not knowing the answer to that question. He knows everything about accounting, and expects you toknow just as much (even though we havent done research on it for 60+ years).Quizzes are impossible and tests are just above that. He really tests you as an accounting major
Dr. Bloom is a horrible professor. If you're not an accounting major please stay far away from this man. In his class, he discourages students from learning accounting and will do very little to actually help in office hours. Our lecture consisted of him reading from the textbook and will not tell you what you're doing wrong on problems .Stay away!
Dr. Bloom's AC 304 class was the hardest class I have ever taken. Students even say none of the masters classes compare to the rigor of his Intermediate Accounting class. Though, I learned a ton. He did not deliver the material in a nice way and I cried many times, but I learned a lot. In the end, I am thankful I had him.
This class is like the ender dragon in Minecraft. Those Electra wings are waiting for you on the other side of the portal if you can pass. You definitely need full diamond armor entering in because holy heck you get your ass kicked. Just know that C's get degrees.
If you do not want an accounting major, do NOT take this class. I wanted a business minor and did ok in acc 201, but this class was difficult and he read from the book for all lectures. Did not enjoy this class in the slightest and he doesn't explain anything.
If you are looking to set yourself apart from the average, then taking Dr. Bloom's intermediate accounting class is a must. He is a rock star in accounting principles and application. John Carroll University and Accounting faculty including Dr. Bloom prepare a student like no other school. Good luck, but know you are being taught by the best!
If there is no other professor option wait. Absolutely the worst professor I've ever had at John Carroll and makes you feel like he is wasting your time. His "respected history" applies to about
Dr. Bloom stands in front of the class and talks about the paper handouts given. It is very important to hang onto his every word because he will ask questions on the quizzes and exams about the sometimes niche things he talks about. Class gets easier as it goes on but still will be the hardest accounting class at JCU.
Dr. Bloom is an OK professor. I read plenty of reviews before I took his class about how he was very hit or miss and that's definitely the case. GO SEE HIM. It's the only way you'll likely pass unless you're extremely smart. Make sure you talk with other classmates and find ways to connect together to go over material. Don't be discouraged.
