funny
this guy puts me to sleep
this guy is booring and pretty mean
explains with common day examples
His notes are unclear. Disorganized. Gives helpful examples though. Nice man!
Boikess was my chem recitation teacher...can we say awful? Nobody understood what he was saying.
tries to be funny, but when you realize you can't understand a thing he's talkin' about, you don't feel like laughin' no more.
He made the exams extremely difficult. Even if you study your ass off, there is now way you will get an A. This is true for all chem classes since he is the director.
Didnt want to give me an extension on my exam even though I was in the hosptial all weak.
Boikess is awesome!
Boikess explains the material and does examples in class that are EXACTLY like the exams. If you take good notes in lecture, and learn the material on your own by reading, you should have no problems in his class.
no doubt that he is tough but if you survive through his OMG tests, you will learn a lot
Tests are hard but if you do the hw exercises, instead of just reading the book, u should do fine
Hard class, not a bad teacher
He really knows his stuff, is hard, but very fair.
Horrible teacher. The only reason I'm barely passing the course is because I work my tail off on my own and have a good study group. He does nothing whatsoever to help you, lectures are a joke.
like a high school teacher, if U do the work yourself you'll do good in the class, but then why shld you take the class?
Great Lecturer. Problem is his handwriting. And he loves to throw curveball on his test. So many tricky questions.
i have just one word: GRRRR!
I'll tell you what. He is a very hard teacher. His test are difficult, and I was personally not a fan of his. However, I had a traumatizing perrsonal problem when in his class. He took it into consideration and is very understanding with a big heart.
His exam was very difficult but i still got a c in the class. prepare yourself to do a lot of studying on your own and lots of tricky questions on the exam.
Decent lecturer, but gotta do the work and read ahead of time. Great guy tho & doesn't mind helping ppl, gotta study on own and do the work...but what else did u expect in chem? Posts his lecture notes online which help a lot and just KEEP UP w/ the w
this guy is the best teacher ever! he knows his chem and can teach it too. if ur going to take chem or need to take it i highly recommend you register for his class because you wont get quality teaching anywhere else. hope u enjoy his class cuz i know
he's got his lectured memorized
WORLD'S WORST LECTURER...Biggest pain in the you-know-where since he's so pompous and can't teach to save his soul, let alone life...avoid him at all costs and if you can't don't listen to him and just take notes from the book...believe me, I got an A doing that in chem 162...WHAT'S HIS PROBLEM?????
horrible lecturer
Boring class, he posts his notes online, so the only reason to go to lecture is the lecture quizzes which are rare. The exams aren't extremely hard.
no point in going to class except for a good ol nap in Beck Hall
I don't know why people don't like his class. I think he's a good teacher. he puts all his lecture nots online and is fairly interesting. i've never even come close to falling asleep in his class and i tend to fall asleep in all my classes and i've learned all the material before
He is a great professor i try to go to his office hours every week and he really helps me out. When i took chem in highschool, i didnt understand anyhting but after having him as a teacher, i completely understood the material. Out of all my classes he made chemistry my fav.. i recommend his class.
the worst professor i have ever had
Personally, I do not believe that Boikess was that hard a teacher. His notes are somewhat understandable and his tests aren't too bad. All it takes is a little work and effort to get a good grade.
Good teacher, puts notes online and makes class interesting. After having Marky, you realize what i great prof Boikess was. Taught very well.
A very enthusiastic and clear teacher. I enjoyed his lectures very much. As always, read the textbook and review notes.
Boikess is a pretty clear and interesting lecturer. He puts all of his lecture notes online for review. Just remember to do all the homework problems and make sure you understand how to do them. His exams are pretty tricky but not impossible.
Boikess is the man - If you like chem you will like this man - he knows what he is talking about and doesnt even make you take notes. Most people who dont like him probably just suck at chem - if you work hard its no different then any other class
worst teacher .His lectures were pretty simple but when u see his tests u will be surprised . twisted the problems . i dropped him horrible teacher
he's a nice guy.....but chem sucks.
awful. very unhelpful. barely writes anything down during lectures. completely unsympathetic to people who are struggling. i've never hated a subject more than chem
In one way, he's a typical Rutgers prof: He knows his stuff but can't/doesn't want to teach.
best teacher in the world! he's sooooo funny but you have to pay attention to figure it out... go to office hours.. it really helps.. his exams are hard but you should expect it bc its college not high school! def take him as a teacher he knows his stuff!
Professor Boikess is very funny and charming. I never wanted to miss a lecture. He is dry, and scribbles on plastic sheets between two projectors. As for the whiners, he is only an email away. I never waited more than a couple of hours for an email response from him and he always responded. Not for the people who won't make it into graduate school.
Not helpful at all. I went all the way to his office hours from Cook to Busch and all he did was tell me to look it up online. He should also take a hint, as head of the dept that when the average grade is a 48 out of 100, maybe something is wrong
Don't take his course for graduate school. The way Boikess runs the course (when he does), its not to intellectually stimulate the mind at all. The exams make chemistry pointless-it becomes an excerise of memorizing problem strategies and obscure ideas in the book. His lecturing doesn't exactly help you-his style is overly abstract for most people
I didn't find him as a great professor.
It's professors like him that make students change their major.
He is concise, clear, and dry as hell ..i love it!
He was not the coordinator of organic chemistry. So, he was basically audio of the book. If you read the book and do all the problems, the class is easy. Try to go to O'Connor's lectures if you can, office hours are like a recitation. If you can't make either, definitely go to the review session. O'Connor is god.
Orgo is hard enough as it is but this man makes following the lectures downright impossible. But you gotta love the voice.
if you have so sort of sleeping disorder where you can't sleep this is the professor for you just grab ur pillow and blanket and he will be sure to knock you out cold!!!
Very Clear and helpful in mu opinion. He's concise, and best of all he doesnt like suck-ups, and ignores people who ask the most stupidest questions ever.
I'm failing organic chemistry this semester because he can't teach.I never recieved lower than a c my entire life until this semester.I've tried teaching myself, but the material is way too hard for me to do that.MY BEST SUGGESTION:TAKE ORGO AT YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE!ORGO SUCKS AT RUTGERS!
Nice guy, but doesn't know how to teach chemistry (gen chem or orgo) at all to ugrads. The things that spit in one's mouth seem intelligbile but the ideas which they convey are few at best-effectively gibberish to the average student. Really couldn't pay attention during his lectures even if I tried.
If you are failing organic chemistry, it is because you aren't studying, not because the lecturer doesn't fit ure likes. Open your book and read it. He does need to slow down in lecture and not expect everyone to read the book BEFORE class. He should teach, then we should read and learn. Book is very helpful. He teaches only half the semester.
one word: horrible!!!!!!!!!
very clear and concise... people don't like him if they don't understand his teaching methods.
I don't understand why everyone has a problem with him. He's very clear during his lecture and only responds to questions in a negative fashion if they really stupid. His teaching method requires that you have some idea of what went on in the previous lecture, which is not too much to ask.
he seeems like he doesn't put any effort into teaching, all he does is give a speech and writes like 5 words on the slide, this is chemistry - students need to see the reactions, yeah and a very messy writer.
Worst Teacher I ever had. Learned a little in lab, reading on my own and from TA's. Extremely hard tests. You know it's bad when the test scores are scaled and you can pass with an 18 and the highest score is 50. Very Poor.
I would not recommend this professor. Yes, he does teach Chem, he knows what he's talking about, and if you pay attention in lectures, you are bound to do well. However, he has been quite rude and unhelpful. The class uses webassign. There has been a problem with it's function (the tech guys agreed with me, by the way), still - no credit for my HW.
He's a really nice guy, doesn't mean to be a tough professor. What he teaches in class makes sense and he does that part well.....but then you're tested on completely different material... so you're pretty much screwed. If the exams went along with what he taught, it'd be fine.... but that's not the case, so DON'T TAKE CHEM HERE!
this chem 307/308
i had o'connor for 307 and the only good thing about o'connor is his review sessions! boikess actually made you learn and im doing so much better for 308 (which is supposed to be a lot harder than 307). although his notes are like the book, he actually explains the things you need to know and tries to discourage memorization.
Boikess is nice and he tries to make orgo as fun as possible. He plays weird songs for entertainment and gives a 5 minute break in the middle of class. Attendance is mandatory because they use the electronic clickers. He is otherwise a horrible teacher and you are almost guaranteed an "F" if you don't try very hard and study your life away.
Boikess is awesome...he is a much better lecturer than O'Connor and he is much more approachable if you have questions.Which is VERY important in this class. He is very funny, moves a little slow with material but definitely makes sure you understand before he moves on..take HIM..NOT OCONNOR
Ok honestly I dont think any professor has ever made me more disappointed that I go to Rutgers. He is a nice man, but he cannot teach. period end of story. He is slow, boring, unenthusiastic and just plain bad. I did well in the class because i slaved over the book and because of oconnors recitation, no help from boikess.
A lot of the exam questions were given out to busch students who attended powell's review..cook/douglass students were at a disadvantage..very unfair..curve was promised for each section but didnt seem to take effect..
Boikess is not a horrible teacher on his own (although he isn't amazing, either). The problem is that you have him half the semester, then switch off to an absolutely useless teacher. In addition, the exams are extremely difficult and some of the questions are ambiguous. Unfortunately, all bio and chem majors are required to take the class.
prof. boikess is really not as hard as people say he is. He is actually really organized in his lecture notes and those are the guides to his classes. It is really easy to follow his lectures and when studying TRUST ME you wanna read his notes first, it will make the studying part a lot easier and understandable. Overall better professor than O'Conn
Contrary to popular belief professor Boikess is really good. The key with him is to read the book before lecture. He lectures with a lot of theory and detail so if you know the basics going into the class you will get a lot more out of it. He never gives out answers so when you ask him a question be SPECIFIC!!!
Unquestionable the worst professor I ever had contact with in attending 3 universities and ultimately teaching as an adjunct at 3 other universities. He knows his subject matter but fails miserably in conveying his knowledge to the students. Furthermore, his attitude was best described as scornful, arrogant, and rude.
This guy is the worst teacher on the planet. And what is up with him hiring mentally challanged TAs? He sucks at teaching and so do his TAs.Honestly speaking they should all be fired for being STUPID. Thank God I am not a chem major or i just might commit suicide.
Lousy teacher but more clear than Roth. Reading the book a lot will help, lecture is pointless. The practice exams are way easier then the real test, dont be fooled.
He's not helpful at all when you go to ask him for help, most of the time he confuses himself. He's not patient with students and seems uninterested in his own subject. Some test questions cover things not even mentioned. You're just screwed if you take orgo, unless you're naturally good at chem.
Many people don't appreciate Boikess and what he can offer. If you go to office hours, ask legitimate questions, and try hard, he's more than happy to help. He's always available to answer questions, but you have to be willing to put forth the effort to ask intelligent questions. He's awesome & I like him the best. Plus, great sense of humor!
One of the smartest Professors ever. Lectures are good but boring sometimes. Not as good as Oconner but still very good. Best part are his online notes. Those notes are realy good. Much better person then people give him credit for.
Dont do it. Take it somewhere else, anywhere else.
Seems like a decent guy, but not a great teacher. The exams are ridiculous-even O'Connor said the final was too hard! Sent out an e-mail about the final exam avg and made us solve a problem in order to get the number of the avg. that was mean.
Makes absolutely the worst exams ever. As a professor though, he's actually helpful as long as you already read the material beforehand. Orgo's a hard course, but Boikess really makes it unnecessarily bad sometimes.
Boikess is hot. Greatest guy ever. End of story.
Pretty awesome as long as you go to him with specific questions and read the book for godsake otherwise ur done.Probably had to think more for this class than any other but worth it
Dr. Boikess is the course coordinator for organic chemistry. Be prepared for difficult exams. Pay careful attention to what he says in lecture. Also, because this is a trend based course, it will help your cause to do as well on the final as you can. It is large determinant of your grade.
A bad bad move. Everything you hate about RU wrapped up into one class.
I guess Boikes would be kind of an ok professor if his exams werent so outrageously difficult. He actually explains things well, although he speaks in a monotone. But he designs the exams as if for phd students, not undergrad students. he taught the 1st part of this class, followed by roth (the worst) & then connor
Extremely smart & deserves more credit than what's given to him by bitter kids who don't do well & blame him. Take advantage of his intelligence; if you're confused, ASK HIM. He's awesome; other profs don't play music nor do they give you breaks. One of the coolest/smartest people you'll ever meet. Give him a fair shot and you'll see for yourself.
Boikess is teaching in rutgers for many years & now he has totally forgotton the method of teaching. He assumes that students know everything. He makes the exams like hell. You have to understands everything from book, lecture notes, practice exams, follow other org. chem books, do online exams. Review session are waste of time if u don't have quest.
He is probably the smartest the organic chemistry teacher. He is also the best lecturer. Oconnor is the funniest and gives out test questions. He is not a good lecturer imo b/c he is very unorganized. He should be the recitation teacher only. ROTH IS JUST BAD. CANT UNDERSTAND HIM. HES SOUNDS LIKE ARNOLD SCHWARNAGGER. has the best typed notes though
I had Boikess Fall 09 for Orgo 1. Of course the class is difficult because its ORGANIC CHEM! I scored a C in the class. The exams were difficult but I would really say it was the profs fault. Study your behind off!
orgo's not an easy class so expect to put in a lot of effort. ppl rant on him probably because they prb don't put serious effort. his lectures are really good as are his notes. guy really deserves more credit. he's helpful if you ask him 'smart' questions, and not 'teach me' the chapter questions.
Orgo itself is hard and with Boikess its only 2X as hard. This class requires alot of time and effort as it is and it doesnt make it any easier that this chem department tries to "weed" out people. Do the best you can and if not all goes to plan do well on the Mcat or Dat to prove to your med or dental school that you really do know orgo.
This class is going to be hard. You have 3 prof during the course of the class and he is one of the worst ones. He is hard to understand and really boring. The only good thing I'd have to say is that he give you a break in the middle of lecture and plays music. He isn't very understandable. I didn't learn much from him. Go to anyone's office hours
The best of the 3 organic chem professors- he really knows what he is talking about and it is up to you to read the text and do homework problems/ old exams to prepare for class. If you didn't like gen chem, organic might be easier for you.
I took General Chem thirty years ago and still to this day, the name Boikess gives me the chills-He just reads from his book-is no help-Don't do it!
Overall, this professor will automatically ruin your chances for health professional school, i.e. medical school. I suggest you take the course at a community college.
A rather mediocre teacher at best, with poor communication skills.
I enjoyed his lectures since there were generally interesting (somewhat helpful), upbeat with music and travel pictures. However, he tends to be a bit condescending and arrogant. Especially in his emails! He's good at introducing concepts but not great at actually helping you understand them.
Boikess is the harder professor for orgo. His part of the lectures can be nice because of the breaks but his notes are pretty much from the book. He can be a bit condescending and he makes the exams harder than they need to be but only O'Connor helps in this course
This is the first time I am ever writting one of these....I came in with over 30 credits to Rutgers and full scholarship. This class was the hardest class I have taken in my life and killed my GPA (which was a 4.0). Please avoid this class...try taking it in the off semesters (orgo 1 in sp, and orgo 2 in fall) if you have to take it. Good luck...
Mediocre in teaching. On one hand he knows what he is teaching. On another hand, he speaks like a robot and do not utilize slides. VERY condescending and unhelpful in terms of your grades and Webassign. Webassign is really screwy, and he seems indifferent about it despite knowing that it will impact our grades.
He is quite clear, and his exams are fair. The final for Orgo 2 was easy, he allows use of a 4x6 notecard. If you don't try, then yeah, you'll fail, but that isn't his fault. It's up to you to study and do the practice problems. I will say, he is a bit condescending and somewhat arrogant, but on the whole, a very good professor. Notes are useful.
He seems tough and may be boring in lecture. His notes are good though and he tells you what he expects you to know. Read the book, go to lecture, go to the reviews, do the old exams like 100 times and you'll do fine.
True, Boikess doesn't do research anymore. He teaches. I took Organic with him in 1973. Sure it was hard, but sorry, life's tougher. Grad School (Chem) and Med School were a breeze compared to him. Only Surgical training was harder. He was demanding but fair and always available for help. He was just a little arrogant and tough.
Well its a hard class, but you can tell he genuinely tries to help students who put the effort in. The exams are extremely tough (compared to the orgo exams my friends at other schools have)but I guess that's why this class is a weeding out class. work hard and get help as soon as you need it or else you'll be weeded out! lol
Boikess is definitely my favorite one out of the 3 professor. He makes sense when he teaches. I was extremely afraid of this class bc of people's comments but it wasn't as bad. My reasoning is that people just want to slack off. If you put serious effort into the class and keep up it with you will be fine.
This is a hard class, and honestly its not even the material that is hard to comprehend, its the hard exams, and the Orgo departments grading style. They dont really tell you curves and such and they grade on 'improvement' so if you deprove,it sucks for you, even if your % average is high. I really hated how they give out grades. Work hard.
This course is definitely the most difficult one I have taken in all my years of college. I think that generally people mistake hard courses for bad professors which is untrue. Boikess is a great guy and absolutely hilarious. He only speaks during lecture and rarely uses visual aid. Take advantage of the TAs, they're your best bet with passing.
Boikess is smart, but he does not really understand that we don't think they way he can. lecture notes are wordy and in class he says the same thing. If you can easily visualize this stuff then you will like Boikess. If you can't, then you will not. He has an odd sense of humor, but sarcastic and merciless. Has office hours and is willing to help.
Not very helpful in lectures. Hard Exams. Learn from TAs!!
The class is hard and he makes it worse. Very bad lecturer, you can't understand what he wants you to know for the exam.
He was the most helpful professor I have ever spoken too. Went to his office hours every week and he helped me. We spoke about his travels around the universe and received a 240 on the final, he's seriously a magnificent man.
Boikess is a really smart person who has travelled extensively, but it is sometimes difficult to grasp everything he says in lecture. He basically stands there and lectures for the entire class and is not very visual. He wants to help and has office hours, but the other professors and TAs are more helpful. His notes are comprehensive though.
He is the most unhelpful professor at Rutgers, hes constantly marking things wrong on exams that are correc, and when you try and ask questions he gives you a backhanded rude answer to everything
Boikess has presented this material so many times that he could do it half asleep, so at this point the notes are comprehensive and actually pretty excellent - know them back and forth and (just as importantly) know why he sets them up the way he does, and you'll be well prepared for the exams. You really need to have the notes down cold.
Boikess is not helpful and arrogant. I went to many office hours with questions and he made me feel small and stupid for the questions I was asking. I got an A in the class because I read the textbook back to front and taught myself everything. Boikess had nothing to do with my grade because his lectures put me to sleep.
he's terrible at teaching but read the notes he gives you back to front and read the book. the exams are no joke and to prepare do practice exams and prepare for the worst. hes not very approachable and his teaching is scattered and unclear.
Chill guy. Has a very layed back style of talking. Helpful but don't try to act smart. Got a B+ for org 1, and an A for org 2.
Boikess gets alot of bad rep but in all honesty he is the smartest professor i have ever met when it comes to chemistry. He makes the exams hard to weed out the slackers. Put in the work and an A is attainable just be prepare to eat, breath, and sleep orgo for the year. Every other orgo professor is a joke compare to the regular season professors btw
One of the worst professors at Rutgers teaching one of the hardest courses. Following his lecture is painful, boring, and near impossible, because he comes in with the assumption that you already know all this stuff. Go to TA office hours, and just hold out until they switch professors and you will be okay.
He's a really good professor and knows what he's doing. He's very patient even though I feel like he's trying really hard to be so. If you do all the readings he assigns you'll be OK. people don't understand some of his tricks are clearly explained in the notes and his principles book. you obviously have to look for the concepts and read on them.
I heard orgo was supposed to be hard but this guy made it very easy! Explains stuff very well and extremely helpful! He's even pretty good-looking to boot ;)
Boikess is a cool professor. Went to his office hours spoke about life. Get to know him. He's not scary like everyone says he is. He is super nice.
he's exam is really hard. I remembered every mechanism he said but when i got my exam i still didn't know how to do bunch of questions! highly recommend to take orgo with other professors!! don't go for him if you have other hard classes in one semester
Everyone knows coming in that Orgo will be hard, but if you put in the work you can earn a good grade. The grading is fair no matter how much people complain about the class being too hard. Boikess is a good guy, but no one is going to baby you.
A lot of people come in to orgo thinking it's hard and that's what screw people over. Boikess is a great professor, tells you everything you need to do, and know step by step and if you dont get a high B or an A in the class it's only your fault. I got an A, didnt read the textbook went to office hours, and listened to what he said. Do the work!
Boikess's lectures and lecture notes are very clear and detailed. When he explains something, I usually get it right away, and when I don't he is happy to explain after class. His tests are pretty brutal, but not impossible.
Biokess is a mean professor. He tells his students that even a monkey can pass his exams, and yet the failing rate is over 50%. He gives online assignments that don't work, and then tells you "its only a small part of the grade". This man has abused his tenure. Exam averages are usually in the 50's, you call that a good professor?
Organic Chemistry is known to be one of the hardest classes at Rutgers so you can't expect it to be easy. I studies for this class like I never studies before. Attend all review sessions and do as many practice exams as possible. Forget the book and stick to the lecture notes. It feels so good to be done with this class :)
He does not care about his students in any way shape or form
This dude definitely has a goal, which is ruining a student's chance for a prestigious gradmed school. Connects this school to high school too much. Should just retire or leave and teach high school if he keeps talking about it. College uses a different approach from high school just like how Orgo uses a different approach from Gen Chem.
Exams are really hard. They are designed to make you fail. Also, does not care about SASSEBS students (only Pharmacy students). He should just retire already. He is already 79 years old. Does not tell you the class average of the exams. Makes you do a problem to determine it, which is really mean. In addition, only talks, no notes or slides
Should be chained to his laboratory far away from students and their futures. I would give anything to teach him something the way he "taught" us and then test him on it the way he did to us. Is not fair nor realistic with his exams. I'm not paying 30K a year to be told "build a model" then tested outrageously. Do your job or retire already.
Basically everything you've heard about orgo is true. I do believe that the midterms are fair. After you experience what the first exam is like and study hard for the next two, it is possible to do well. However, the final is absolutely ridiculous. The way the whole entire course is set up and graded is bizarre also. Try to take it off season.
From someone who breezed freshmen year with a 4.0, this hit my pride. This class requires SOO much work and it's insanely difficult. Go to office hours. Read the notes. Watch tons of videos. I don't know if I passed this class yet. But do not think if you got through BioChem easily, it'll be easy. It won't. Try to take Honors Orgo instead.
Boikess has a reputation for a reason. You have to work really hard to do well in this course. His exams suck, puts question types on the final you've never seen before. Most averages on exams are 55. Don't take any other time consuming or difficult classes w this class. Go to class and do the OWLS. May the curve be ever in your favor.
Took this class my first semester of college, so I didn't have a lot of professors to compare him to. In lecture, he covered the material in a clear and thorough manner, gave us breaks, and even talked about music and travel. However, when it came to exams and other forms of administration, he could get pretty sadistic. Orgo 1 took a lot of work.
Orgo with this maniac and his pharmacy allies is a bad idea. Favors pharmacy students due to their intelligence. I may not be intelligent as them, but I am still pretty smart. Here's proof: A's in every other class. I should have withdrawn and take it in the summer. A in summer OrgoF in Boikess Orgo even if med schools are against it.
I agree with the post below. Boikess just yells at students when they pass by his office or even stare through his door. I should have taken Honors Orgo with Seidel and Williams or Summer Orgo with Taylor or Govindarajoo. Even though med schools dislike Summer Orgo, think about this: an A in Summer Orgo is much better than failing Boikess Orgo.
This class is demonically difficult, but you probably already know that going in. Boikess will never BS you about how hard this class is. He knows it's intense. You only have Boikess as a lecturer for about a month and a half. He reads his notes like an essay and isn't super responsive to questions, but his break in lecture makes things tolerable.
I think Dr. Boikess gets a lot more heat than he deserves. His lectures are really informative and help you gain a much better intuition of not only Organic Chemistry but also other chemical concepts. I got a hell of a lot of out this course. If you put the work in, you can get an A. I don't care who you are. Get yourself motivated and study.
Best lecturer in the chem department. His grasp on the material is extensive and deep. No bullsh*t, tells you whats up. word.
His lectures were boring, but everything he would test you is in his notes! It might be a small little thing in his notes, but it's there, so it's fair. Didn't use the book at all. Go to his office hours with specific questions and he's pretty cool, but don't go whine. Tough exams, has a talent for turning an easy concept into a crazy hard question
Boikess's exams were really tough. They are all open-ended. There is nothing on the exam from the lecture notes or the textbook. In addition, it is hard to understand what he is saying during lecture since he just mumbles. I would recommend taking Orgo in the summer.
He can be intimidating during lectures. Organic Chemistry is never easy, but he is truly a good man, and a brilliant professor. Go to his office hours and he will hep you.
One mistake on OWL results in a zero for the whole assignment. Lots of arrogant people in this class including him. He does not want to help you unless you are in pharmacy. Instead he gives you an attitude when you ask him a question. No curve since all the arrogant 4.0 premeds and pharmacy students destroy it.
If Boikess was grading his own exam, he would give himself a C, D, or F.
The problem sets on OWL and exams are too hard to even attempt.
This class makes your GPA extinct. My advice is to study everyday for this class. Even then you are almost guaranteed to fail his exams since many of the questions are long and abstract (drawing all possible isomers for C6H10OCl including stereochemistry).
Even though there is a minimal amount of calculations, this class is still more difficult than Gen Chem. This class is difficult as Calc 151.
This class and the grading policy will make your GPA extinct. The Chem Department weeds out people.
Boikess does not offer help unless you have upper-level stats like pharmacy and some engineering students. Definitely does not want science majors to go to Columbia like him. He probably whispers I went to Columbia. Those students won't go there during lecture. This inspires him to create difficult exams and OWL policies. Take Honors Orgo.
Perelman was his best friend during the earlier ages.
Boikess and Roth must have been best friends many years ago and are still best friends today.
Here is a list of reagents that you are expected to know for his class: NBS, Cl2hv, E2 (t-b, NaOR), Br2, HBr, Br2H2O, H2OH3O+, CH3CH2Br, NaNH2NH3, Diels-Alder, KHCO3, Na2Cr2O7, H2CrO4, PCC, X2, HNO2, SO3, Friedel-Craft, and NaOH. That's too much for a basic Orgo class and for people who are not planning to use Orgo in the future.
Here are the reactions that you need to know: Wittig, Acid-Acetal Formation and reverse, Base Formation and reverse, hydrolysis, nitriles, imines, enamines, THP ethers, Baeyer-Villiger, Wolff-Kishner, and haloforms plus its complex mechanisms and synthesis. Too much for a non-chem major. Should teach Orgo 411 instead of sophomore Orgo.
Alert: Do not take Orgo with him. Take Orgo in the summer. I read these reviews and thought they were an exaggeration, but they weren't. He is not clear on the concepts that may appear on the exam and graded with a vendetta. Grading is based on improvement instead of skills. Arrogant and mean for no reason.
Boikess is a lecturer with a nasty attitude for anybody with a question that is not up to his standard. His exams are given at an extremely upper-level college difficulty and rarely equilibrate to his lecture notes or practice problems. He leaves you utterly unprepared. The only way to pass is through the TA and TI reviews. Make good use of them.
Orgo (carbonyls) is as difficult as Calc 151 since there are thousands of reactions and long mechanisms. I do not understand why Orgo is required for life science majors. Even Biochem does not require Orgo especially carbonyls. One can ace that class without Orgo. Gen Chem is sufficient enough for a degree in the life sciences.
Boikess tells his TIs to grade the exams with a vendetta. Do not be alarmed when you score in the 20's or 30's. Simply withdraw. Above a 50 on the exam is like an A. I do not understand how the average is in the 50's when most people fail the exams. Probably the pharmacy students score in the 90's and inflates the average.
This class was one of the hardest classes at Rutgers, even harder than Physics 203 and 204 and any other chemistry course in this school including PChem. I'm glad that I am out of this class.
Quite possibly the hardest and worst teacher besides the Calc teacher.
It's a one-of-a-kind class, an eye-opener, really. Tests are nothing you imagined it would be.
Greenblatt, Hinch, and Croft must be his best friends from a long time ago and are still his friends today since they enjoy giving difficult exams.
This class is tough.
AWFUL DO NOT TAKE HIM SAVE YOURSELF
Boikess is fine compared to Roth and whoever the other prof is. At least during his lecture i know when to wake up to click in. Roth does his attendance at random times so i cant even sleep through the class. tests are intense go to office hours and read through notes; high 70s on tests and mid low 70 on final will net u the A
This class is making me reconsider my whole life. I believe it exist solely as a weaving out class. The material is close to impossible to solve with the way the material is presented. I used to make the dean's list and now this class has me seriously believing that I have a learning disability. I have a lot of respect to those who got 'A's.
Great professor who actually explains the material clearly, doesn't say one thing in one lecture and contradicts himself in another lecture, and has notes that aren't replete with mistakes. Everything in stark contrast to the other professor - O'Connor. Exams were not hard esp. if you practice previous exams. Got an A. TA office hours help too.
Do not get discouraged when you score in the 40's and 50's on the first few exams. Def do not reconsider your career path/drop the class. That's what they want you to do. Do not think that attending a billion office hours will help you. Attend in moderation, then sit down and internalize all the material. You can do it, don't buy into the hype.
Honestly people who complain either dont put in the effort or dont try to understand the material. Lecture notes and office hours are key and help. The class is supposed to be hard! Just put in the effort to actually understand orgo and you can do well. Nothing is impossible. Put in at least 2 hours a day and keep up with notes and you can do great
Probably one of the worst professors in this school including Roth. Concepts taught during lectures are not on the exams. Believes that this is the only class students are taking since he enjoys giving exams on Sundays. Does not believe in partial credit. Also believes that he is high and mighty.
Never got a low grade in any science course. Well, I guess Boikess's class isn't really a science course. It should just be changed to Music 101. If you are premed, you will regret taking him since Orgo is supposed to be one of the most important class for med or dent school.
I think a lot of people have misconceptions about him because he's the course coordinator of a really hard course. I ended up getting an A probably because of him by going to his office hours. He's the most clear out of all the 3 lecturers and he is genuinely willing to help you if you put the work into it.
Good lecturer and an expert on organic chemistry. People blame him for their bad grades since he's the coordinator but there are plenty of outlets to get help. Tests can be tough if your not prepared but honestly they are pretty fair and there's a huge curve. This course is going to be tough anywhere you take it but it's not as bad as people say.
It's orgo. Expect the worst. Self-studying is your best bet in the this class. An A is possible due to the bomb curve but you need to work hard to get it.
Spends most of the lecture time telling jokes and puts concepts on the exam that were never taught in lecture or in the textbook. And he does not have any visual aids during lecture like powerpoints and speaks for the entire period like a typical humanities class.
This class should be taken by everyone Rutgers student. It is easy and Dr. Boikess makes it more than approachable if you actually care to learn this cool topic. If you want a GPA booster and you are interested in chem take this class. Don't listen to the endless hour stories of kids who got bad grades because they did not try hard enough.
People give Boikess a lot of blame. Honestly, this man is great. He could be a savage at times when it comes to when he sends the email about exam results, but when he teaches, his notes are good, and he explains everything thoroughly through the notes. His lectures could be boring but his notes are great. People say he's bad since they don't try
Maybe I didn't get the best grade by taking Orgo with Boikess, but I'm hella prepared now for whatever Orgo they throw at me on the DAT. I regret nothing.
Orgo is not an easy class and bokiess doesn't make it any easier however it is very possible to do well in the class. He is not a great lecturer however his notes are detailed, if you read through them you should be fine. Office hours Is the KEY to success, attend TA/TI office hours and you should do well in class. Suggest TA: Dan, Chriag, Akash
Honestly, Boikess was the best professor out of the 3 during the semester. (Maybe except for Warmuth ). Boikess goes at a slow pace and his notes are amazing. Try doing well on his exams so that you can still have an ok grade after Roth's exam
Gotta know your stuff before walking in that classroom cause he is flying over material
Professor Boikess had the best notes out of all the other three but he always did ask some obscure question. Supplement this class with at least 3 office hours every week and you will be fine!
Boikess is not a good lecturer and his exams are difficult. Questions were taken from Orgo 411 exams. Also gives exams on Sundays which causes a delay in the bus schedule like football games. Probably Boikess and Chris Ash collaborate with each other.
Exams are difficult and covers concepts not mentioned in lecture and textbook. Spent an hour on a question and got no solution. This course is as difficult as Calc 151. Take this course in the summer.
Professor Boikess does not teach anything in lecture, just read off from his lecture notes, which I can do by myself :/ People will tell you attend as many office hours you can if you wanna get a good grade. If professors go over materials and explain them well in class, so many of the students don't need to depend on office hours to do well.
Dr. Boikess is a nice guy and is the best lecturer out of the 3. Yes his lectures notes are dense but everything on the exam comes exactly from them. He also posts rough drafts of a textbook he's writing with questions similar in difficulty to the exams which no other professor does. He provides the most resources to the students which is great.
Best lecturer out of the three, but is still mediocre. To be honest, the three professors that teach the class don't fully understand the conceptual difficulties the current students have, and therefore cannot teach adequately. On the other hand, the TA's do understand. They teach systematically and know how to successfully present the info.
Organic Chemistry is hard, but he doesn't deserve all the hate. He gives out the best lecture notes and his "How to Solve" stuff was a lifesaver. You barely learn anything from any lectures though, since it is a lot to teach in not that much time. If you want to get a good grade, find time on your own to learn and DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS!
This is a difficult class. Exams are designed for graduate students and do not align with the curriculum. Exams require a good working knowledge of PChem 327 and 328, Orgo 411, and possibly Chem 475 or 480. Had to use partial derivatives on one problem. Take this class off season.
This is a tough course. Exams are designed for graduate students and do not align with the curriculum. Exams require a good working knowledge of PChem 327 and 328, Orgo 411, and possibly Chem 475 or 480. Had to use partial derivatives on one problem. Take this class off season.
Hourly exams and final have nothing to do with the textbook, resources, office hours, and review sessions. Would not take again.
Boikess gets a bad rep just because its orgo. Out of all the lecturers, he is the best and he gives out the best notes. You just have to put in some extra time for this class and you will be fine. This is not a class to cram for, as I would say you should know the material at least a week before the exam. Orgo should be your only source of alcohol.
Fine professor but exams were beyond the scope of this lower-level course. Will not take again.
Seems like the worst professor ever after the first exam, but after dealing with the other two, he is clearly the best out of them, however bad he may be. The course itself is structured extremely difficultly and is a weed out for sure. This class requires extensive out of class prep with study groups and office hours to pass.
Best out of the three orgo professors at rutgers, but still awful. Read the textbook and find a good TA for office hours if you want to pass
This course is extremely difficult. However, I did well because I before read and I actually went to his office hours and he was very helpful.
Dr. Boikess structures RU Ochem in a very unnecessary, unfair, and extremely difficult way for the type of course it is. Organic chem is already a tough subject to grasp and Boikess does not make it any easier. Tests sometimes included material never presented in lecture; multiple choice questions are just as bad. Go to TA office hours.
The organic chemistry department does not teach you well, if correctly, and encourges an antagoniatic culture among the student body. The grading is not standardized and they love testing information that was never taught using an inaccurate textbooks/lecture notes. A complete disservice to students, and a sorry excuse for a science class.
Terrible lecturer. He doesn't use many diagrams or pictures, and just talks in long monotonous sentences, expecting everyone to follow along and understand him. the exams are CRAZY HARD. The notes he posts are ridiculously long, because they are just as long at the textbook chapters (isn't the point of notes to summarize the textbook?).
My man, Bob Boikess. This material is hard and his exams are harder. But there are no "gotcha" questions. Most of the people who take this course are pre-med, A field where you'll have to apply a vast amount of information in a short period of time. This course simply gives a taste of med school difficulty. His notes have everything; just read them
Ahhh Orgo. Time consuming and somewhat difficult. If you put in the time and go to office hours you should be fine. Try to read for the week ahead of time then pay attention in lecture trust me it will do wonders for you. In the end, it is a rewarding class and something to look back on and be proud of that you made it out alive.
Dr. Boikess and the whole Organic department are inept. No concept of how to teach. The material is hard in nature because you can't find patterns from problems and memorize them. There are so many ways of presenting a problem that you need to understand the principles and apply them. Because of the nature of the course, we need educators.
Its a 2-in-1 class. You get what you put into this class. Nothing more.
Not enough practice or preparation in lectures. Would not take again.
Spends half the lecture talking his achievements. Spends the other half rushing through material. Not sure what he is trying to achieve in this class.
Boikess is an amazing teacher. Chemistry is still hard though., so be prepared to put in a lot of work. If you fail orgo it's your fault for not taking advantage of the office hours, there's so many office hours.
Honestly, I took orgo thinking that I am gonna have the worst semester ever and tbh it wasn't even that bad. Yeah the class is hard but it is definitely doable if you put the right amount of effort into it. This class is no joke. Don't rely on lectures because they won't help. Just make sure you know what you are going to be tested on.
I guess I'll say something good and bad. I'll start with the bad: he really doesn't put any effort into his lectures. I understand there is limited time, but at least Jimenez and Roth use powerpoint slides and explain everything in a methodical flow. Anyways the good is, he only teaches a 1/3 of the class, and he tries to give you the best grade
The textbook should be your primary resource for this class. Go to office hours every week, and go to each test review session before each Exam. Taking every practice exam possible is recommended, as well as doing each set of practice problems for each chapter. The lectures themselves are only useful if you have read BEFORE class.
He has the hard job of introducing organic to people who have never even thought this type of way before and so I give him props for that. You cannot go into lecture knowing nothing and expect it to make sense, go to lecture prepared and you will understand him. Hes a rather inspiring guy and gives a break during lecture which is appreciated.
Boikess is the best orgo professor. He uses real world examples to help you understand the material and constantly reassures that "you don't need to know orgo to be able to do ___". His notes are just an outline of what he is going to say in class so print them out and annotate them. If you skip class to read them later, it will be very confusing
I found out after taking orgo 1 that the key to acing the exams is reading every single word in his lecture notes. Any and every piece of info he puts in the notes is not only fair game on an exam, but it is to further your understanding and appreciation for orgo. His notes are by far the best out of the 3 profs in terms of preparation for exams.
There's a lot of things heard about Boikess. Honestly, if you do want an A, you need to work really really hard unless you were born a genius. His lectures are kind of boring, but his notes are very in depth. Grading wise-yes, exams are often graded harshly, at least in my experience. ACS saved my grade so def take it.
Well known as a gatekeeper (and for a good reason). As painful as this course is, I highly recommend it to anybody who feels like they need to be challenged. You WILL have trouble and you WILL need help from outside sources, but that's simply the nature of Orgo. Take good notes, go to office hours, find your peers and hunker down.
Orgo307 with Professor Boikess was a challenge for any student's sanity. His portion of the course was arguably the easiest but somehow was made more difficult by him and consisted of him trying to use a Microsoft Surface he had no idea how to use. As course coordinator his false use of statistics and unfair exams/grading makes for a bad time.
While professor Boikess was decent at introducing orgo to us, his lack of visual notes during lectures made it very difficult to understand what he was talking about, and his drawings were rough at best. As coordinator he routinely gave "averages" that weren't true averages, and continues to make the course more difficult than it needs to be.
Hes pretty good at teaching if you pay attention in lectures. Listen closely to what he says and dont bother using the book to study orgo because he has his own Way of doing orgo that the book doesnt follow. I barely passed but my test average was around a 40 and I still passed so do the homework and go to class.
Organic chemistry is a very hard subject. But professor Boikess just makes it even harder at Rutgers. He doesn't use any slideshow or explain material clearly. The exams are ridiculously hard and the grading system is total nonsense. For me, he will always be remembered as one of the worst nightmare to pre med/dental students.
Super unfair guy and unfortunately the course coordinator. He abuses his power by using false statistics to showcase higher averages. His grades are based upon upward trend so someone with a lower grade than you can end with an A and you with a B+. Which is sheer stupidity considering someone can purposely try less on the first.
The overall average for the past semester was a 51, after getting rid of scores that fell below a certain value. He claims that the class average is a C+, but even doing 20 points above this average only got me a B+. Anywhere else, this average would have put you at an A. But not with boikess. Perhaps one of the most unfair professors at Rutgers
the system of three professors after each exam is terrible.
I heard so much stuff about this professor but unlike what was said, I think that he is a really sweet guy. He is veryyyy smart and gives practice quiz and exams which were really helpful on his actual quiz/exam. Chemistry is hard to teach and hard to understand so I do suggest reading the textbook if you have never taken chemistry before.
I took him for Chem of Life and he was horrible. Even before we switched to Online classes, his lectures were impossible to follow. His handwriting was awful and the way he explained was so dry. It was a lot easier to learn through the textbook. He was also just plain mean. The way he replied to emails/answered questions were degrading at best.
Man needs to retire. Lectures are dry and put me to sleep. Hes just reading from his notes. Tests are impossible to study for. Its a 3 credit courses that required a ridiculous amount of work to barely pass. Class averages are 50s but he does some messed up bell curve that makes the lower students grades actually worse.
He's a nice guy but it's impossible to learn, you are teaching yourself. Whatever you do dont do it, this class gave me so much anxiety and the lectures dont help they are very confusing.
209 was taught async this semester. He teaches through a few slides and talks most of the time (lecture is mostly verbal). I do not think he is a bad professor, he just has a different teaching style that does not work well when teaching orgo (but does explain the material). he is a genuine person, very sarcastic, monotoned so take breaks w lecture
Personality wise, hes an okay guy. But as a professor he's terrible. I'm taking him for his "sync" class in spring 2021 and we ALL are struggling. I'm literally teaching myself everything because his lectures are not only boring, he doesn't show the work for problems. if we were in person he'd better but clearly online is way ahead of his time.
Hes a nice guy, but lectures are all asynchronous so we cant ask questions until the review or if we email him. Even then, his explanations are very difficult to understand. Lectures are almost completely verbal with no explanation on visuals. Exams feel impossible to pass.
I just took his class spring of 2021 and was doing exceptionally well until he decided that I cheated, even though I didn't and there was no proof of me cheating. On top of that, he does not communicate at all with his students and on top of that takes off a grade point if you "bug him too much" over email. His TA was extremely creepy.
There are not a lot of good thing to say about his teaching. Mostly because there's little teaching on his end. If you're a visual leaner, you're going to have a rough time. Podcast-like lectures and his essay-style lecture notes. One upside is his over reliance on the textbook, so you'll be fine going off that and steering clear of his material.
Too many things to be said. This is supposed to be ELEMENTARY organic chemistry, but he teaches it like regular orgo chem, probably worse. The lecture notes are essay-like, with a lot of words and little visual explanation - much like his review sessions. You are only graded on exams and a few quizzes, and the exams are impossible to pass.
this class makes me want to cry. as others have said, his lecture notes are essay-like and he never provides step-by-step solutions for anything. final grades are based on exam avgs, but he won't count scores below a certain % when calculating them. he also purposely made our exams happen after the holidays. prob the hardest class i've taken.
hes so rude, uncaring, and hardly teaches. his review sessions are unhelpful and doesnt show the work hes doing. the way he talks is so unengaging too. take regular orgo if you can do not take this class...
Tough professor but very knowledgeable, makes you work for your grade but was always available to help if you needed to have something clarified. Gets a bad rap from many students, but I think theyre just whiners who didnt want to work. Great lecturer but he doesnt spoon feed you the information.
Get ready to hate your life for a semester. Professor Boikess is lazy and can't even bother to write down his work. His prerecorded lectures are long with little to no visual examples. Exams are beyond difficult and hard to prepare for. No opportunity for extra credit so hopefully you are a good test taker.
Horrible. This class is the absolute worst. Professor does not care about his class and exams are extremely hard to pass. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR!
Chem should not be asynchronous. His pre-recorded lectures/review sessions were a joke with zero visuals. I recommend just reading the textbook, taking notes on it, and doing the practice problems. STUDY THE OLD EXAMS POSTED TO CANVAS!!! Content itself wasn't terrible if you took a chem in high school, but definitely need to work for your grade.
This course was in-person now and was difficult. Dr. Boikess is available for office hours, so go to those with questions. Look at past exams and classwork. Go to class if you want to do well. Exams are hard but he curves. Watch his lectures, read his lecture notes, and skim over or read the textbook for a better understanding.
Chem of Life was difficult, but the curve at the end made it manageable to get a good passing grade. Tests are difficult, but he does provide old resources that help a lot. Be sure to read the textbook and do the problems to grasp the basic concept. The class is difficult, but the final exam mainly determines your final grade.
This professor made me hate my life. He is one of the worst if not the worst professors I have ever had. HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH and the only reason I understand anything is because of the organic chemistry tutor. It is more of an asynchronous class but he forces you to show up in person otherwise you lose points bc no one would show up!
IF YOU READ THE LECTURE NOTES AND PUT EFFORT INTO REACHING OUT FOR HELP AND STUDYING, YOU WILL DO FINE I think boikess gets a bad rep but i enjoyed his class alot although sometimes he is hard to understand and the lecture notes are long, he is always available to answer any questions email zoom in person. very smart- dont fall behind
I basically failed the first 2 exams, getting below average on both, 48 and 36 respectively, and the averages were 55 and 48 respectively. Got a 68 on the final tho after studying hella which was like a whole 20 points above the average. His recorded lectures kinda help but the past exams he uploads are what you NEED to review. PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!
DONT FALL BEHIND! Took this class 2x to pass. He curves you individually based on if you improve from exam 1-3 &on quizzes. I had a grade of 60 but he curved me to a B since my grades got better. Lectures are recorded & in class you do practice problems. If you dont put in the work & watch the lectures, you will NOT pass trust me!
To pass this class with a good grade, you have to review the practice problems he gives in class. He also uploads past exams, which were very helpful since some problems were similar or exact to the exams he gave.
This professor has no purpose at all, you teach yourself everything. You ask him a question and he's confused himself and doesn't answer it. I asked him if we round to whole number or by tenth etc, and he said "go up if its above 5".... like what? Honestly he seems to old to be teaching the course, chem isn't easy and he makes it harder
attendance isn't mandatory but he takes it. and factors in how often you came to class when it's time for final grades i recommend teaching urself in this class, read the textbook and do the practice exams on canvas you'll b alright. final exam is what determines if u pass or fail go to review sessions w/ the TA plz. he sucks at explaining things!!
I wish I could give zero stars because he truly doesn't even deserve 1. Believe every terrible review on here. There are no lectures in person, only online prerecorded lectures from the pandemic w little to no visual & just him horribly verbalizing the topic. Dont even waste your time listening to them, just get a tutor and do practice problems.
Improving throughout the course (especially on the later exams / final) and participation (aka going to class and turning in your group work) can really boost your grade! Most people don't well so try to compare your exam grades to the class average too. His notes are hard to get through, so I would recommend using the textbook, especially for orgo
Review previous exams/quizzes and use notes/google to figure out how each question was answered. Practice any incorrect questions and keep studying them, eventually you'll find yourself skipping certain questions because they're too easy. Try timing yourself as well. Don't stress too much because chemistry takes a while to understand, it's normal.
JUST TAKE REGULAR ORGO with normal lectures not this "active learning". This is the worst class setup where you have to teach yourself everything; his online "lectures" are just him talking with no notes. I can't even understand how this is allowed. Teaching myself Organic Chemistry of all things. The worst class I have ever taken at Rutgers.
Boikess was absent this semester. Study from the textbook and do the practice exams/quizzes - they are a very good indication of what will be on exams. Come to class with some idea of the lecture content.
He passed away on September 7, 2025. Sadly, this is the legacy he left behind.
