This prof is good at what he does, makes his explanations very clear and elaborates if you need him to. Claims he is a nerd and it shows!!
Had him for the Lab, kick ass. Knows what he is talking about, genuinely loves what he does. Can explain what obscure concepts are and how to apply them. Could probably teach Math to a chimp, and have the chimp get it.
He says he is very approachable, especially to students who HATE math like myself. I went to his office for help and left feeling like a complete idiot. I didn't find him helpful, nor did his lectures make sence. I ended up dropping the course after not being able to understand his teaching approach. If you're good at math, take him. If not, don
Awesome! He's knows what he's doing and loves doing it. He's honest and very helpful. He doesn't try to make anyone feel stupid and always amswers question no matter how dumb they seem. It's worth going to class just to hear his funny remarks and stories! Highly recommend him!
He is an awsome prof. I think his students rate is one of the highest in the Math Dep. He explain in a such a way that any dumb can get it. If you realy hate Math take his class and you will love it. The best prof in Math Dep.
An excellent prof. For me was the best Math prof from U. of Manitoba
Amazing! What other prof will be completely up front with being a nerd and break out into song?! Funny guy, very helpful and explains things clearly. Would lobe to have more classes with him.
Rob is such an awesome prof. Super helpful and extremely approachable. I hated math going into this class but he was able to help me understand the course so well that I actually enjoyed going to class. While in class, his funny remarks were really great. He had plenty of office hours and actually enjoyed when you came to ask for help.
He's a great math professor. I started out the course hating math and thinking I was going to barely squeeze by. Make sure you go to class, because he always covers important things.
excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! highly recommend him.
Excellent Instructor. Very willing to help students who want to do well. Go to class, go to his office hours, listen to him and you will do great.
You should take his course. He is good teacher who really teaches you. As long as you come to his class, you will have no worry about his exam!
Rob is a great lecturer! He has a way of taking math and explaining it in such a way that is easy to understand. If you have a hard time with math and need to get your math credit, TAKE THIS COURSE WITH ROB!!!
great prof. linear 2 was tough. but he made it a lot easier. great guy. 'the next korytowski'. had to work at the course since you had to be creative and think fast when trying to do a proof on test. but do the work. and you'll do fine.
lecture and exam not come together
He is a pretty good prof, goes through good examples and explains things well. knows his stuff.loves wikipedia haha
Awesome Instructor. Explains topics well and then gives examples. This guy knows how to Teach. Take any course you can with him!!! VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
good teacher
Good teacher, but lecture not clear at all. Missed some parts from the textbook. Not recommanded!
Really good prof. Made class super interesting, and explained content really well. Did a fair amount of examples during class, and was very helpful when approached outside class. Only downfall is that his exams are BRUTAL! Put the absolute hardest questions ever on it. I would still recommend him never the less because i did learn alot.
Lordy lordy lordy! This guy is a terrible professor! I had a C+ in a university-equivalent calculus course before, and this guy made math into a different language for me! It seemed like he learned what he was going to teach 20 minutes before the class. Avoid this guy's classes if possible!
Course as brutal and had over a 50% VW rate. I learned alot and felt I obtained something of value and enjoyed it other than the brutal midterm exam which had a 35% average. His final Exams are easy but the midterms are brutal.
I don`t know what you people are talking about. Rob is the man! If you attend every class and take down all of his notes you will ace his courses. Great, interesting teacher with lots of passion and enthusiasm. I took MATH 1500 in U1 and followed Rob to MATH 1210 in 2nd term. Like in every math course, if you slack off, you fail anyway
Nice Guy. Says he is a nerd and is really cool about. He is tricky with his tests and mid terms - throws alot of theory on tests, but good guy. He is always cheerful and has some funny things to say. Good teacher for the most part but like any class requires alot of work. Make sure to attend this class though- important things get covered.
one of the worst professors i've ever had....he tried to use twitter in class..the most pointless idea ever, he would go on rants about things that not only had nothing to do with math but on things that would only make sense if you smoked as much as keith richards. NOT A PROF you want if you dont like Math to begin with
Good prof.Explanations clear and class goes by fast but beware midterms very tricky and will kill you. Final was easy. For the midterm, study and know every single question in the book. You will see theory and weird questions never covered in class. If you don't do the homework, do not expect to pass the mid term. You must work to get a good mark.
If you expect to be taught the theory that is on the quizzes, you are dead wrong. Even if you feel comfortable with the material prior the midterm, you are in for a surprise as 50% of the class will fail. The guy means well but seems to not care about the success of his students. The math is not tricky but expect the exams to be very hard.
I took this course in the summer time, but I dropped and now avoid this professor in any of my other classes. He will generally assume you know what he is talking about, and he notes are difficult to understand.
his guy will flunk out all the weak students (~50% of the class) which is awesome!
Worst prof. i've ever had in 5 years! half the class VW'd after the 1st day...the midterm was so hard that the avg was 48%.he does not care at all about the students...and seems to take pleasure in their failure! i enjoy math, but this guy makes you hate it. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES!!
Stay far away. He gets pleasure from failing students. His favourite thing to do is to belittle students while he brags about how smart he is. Rather than taking an interest in actually teaching the students he avoids questions and lets you struggle on your own. Will test material he purposely won't demonstrate in class. AWFUL.
Unlike previous entries, I had no problems with the class. I attended every single one and managed to score well on each assignment and exam. It may be because I took MATH 1010, haha. Very easy. However, he is quite arrogant and it wouldn't surprise me if he did find pleasure in failing students. Just go to class and do the homework.
I don't understand peoples ratings. I loved this course, and Rob is a very good instructor. Yes it's hard, but you shouldn't expect an A+ to be handed to you on a platter. You need to be prepared to work, which I did and earned an A+ in both classes of his in which I was enrolled.
I took the summer session of his class and I thought it was great! He tries to keep the class interesting and he likes it when his students participates in his lectures. He was a lot BETTER than the my previous cal prof; he explains it with much more detail, like step by step while he goes over examples. Highly recommended!
Took his summer course for 1300 and 1500 at the same time and though it was very tough to keep up to both at the same time, he was always available either in his office or by email to help out. Plus a really genuinely nice guy. His tests are tough but not really hard.
I thought this professor was extremely helpful. Anytime help was needed he was always available and even gave plenty of time during class to ask questions. His explanations were easy to understand. I highly recommend him!
Hard to decide if I like him or not. He's definitely a nice guy, and will help you out, but his exams and quizzes are insane. How can I fail algebra when I ace calculus with a different prof? Not because other prof was too easy, Rob was simply too hard. This is an intro course, and I would rather stab myself in the eye than take it again.
Awesome Teacher, I recommend taking this class in the summer. It is a really heavy first year course and Rob helps a lot. He is really approachable, quizes are little tricky but the midterm and final were easy. JUST STUDY!
I'm in my fourth year at the U of M and this is by far the best math prof I've had! Very clear, humourous and speaks plain english. I don't know what else to say but register for one of his classes if you can!
Very clear
I found that Rob has that 'too cool for school' attitude. I also found that he kind of expects you to already know the stuff he's teaching and he goes kind of fast.
Mid terms and Final is EASY! Funny teacher and easy to understand.
From day 1 he makes it very clear that the class may seem slow and easy at the start but gets harder & faster later, so keep up. Very approachable, helpful and kind. SERIOUSLY, if you read/understand the text/math booklet and do the questions there should be no problem getting an A. Great teacher but sometimes gives harder questions on tests/assign
A fantastic class. As long as you take notes and do the text book questions and hand-in assignments most people should be able to do well in this class. :) I would definitely take another class taught by Rob.
Great prof. Do the work and you'll succeed
Wonderful prof, gives great notes, makes everything very clear and easy to understand, and gives math help to any one that asks, would take another class with him in a heart beat , best math prof i ever had !!!!
I went into really excited, and was slightly disappointed that it was pretty much just textbook based. All in all it was ok and relatively easy (the exams were examples from the practice tests, but people still managed to fail...). Just DO the practice tests and assignments!! Also props to him for making a web page for the course, super cool!
Can seem a little pompous at times, but other than that he's not bad.The tests + assignments were very fair, you have to really not try at all in order to fail(the mid-term turned out to be the questions from the practice exams!).In my class you either got an A+ or an F, half the class apparently failed-- I wonder how that happened...
Great prof. Knows his content inside and out, and actually lectures at a pace that you can keep up to. Quiz's were a little difficult though.
Rob is awesome. He is very accessible to ask questions, he has a skype link on his website, the had "Campo hours" as well as office hours. He starts every class with, "Are there any questions, anything at all?" He knows his stuff, and teaches the course exactly like a high school course, perfect for a new university student!
Incredibly helpful, scheduling extra hours to meet with students. He has a Skype account that's often on if you have a question that has to be asked face-to-face but you can't make it to school. Posts tons of helpful info and question sheets on his site. His questions range from very easy to crazy-tough, so it's hard to give him an easiness rating.
Definitely knows his stuff. I think everyone can tell he truly enjoys teaching. I don't usually like math but I enjoyed his class.
Rob is really cool and super helpful -- HIGHLY recommended. Although if you ever take Calc1 BUY GRANT'S TUTORING -- I got an A+ in this course without using the textbook
Pretty easy course in general. Prof really knows his stuff and he is very easy to understand. He doesn't post his notes online but you will want to go to class anyway. Easy A if you do go.
Very good at explaining things, although does take a while to get on topic sometimes. Not technically mandatory to attend all the time but strongly advised because its hard to catch up because of the amount of material covered in class. Good at answering questions and making himself REALLY accessible - uses Skype and appointment booking service!!
overall pretty good teacher, always asks if there are any questions before class starts, the exams were easier than his quizes.
Watch the videos on his web site, very helpful. Keep up with the understanding and practice questions. Study by doing old exams and your notes. Textbook was a bit confusing so take your own notes.
BEST TEACHER EVER! I wish he could teach all my courses.
cool prof.im so glad i took math with him.his website is so helpful especially when i was falling behind!do all the practice sheets on his website and exams would be alright for u!
I thought that Rob was a great prof. who cares a lot about his students and how well they do in his classes. I've had him for both Math 1500 and Math 1300 and I wouldn't hesitate to take another class from him. He's clear, uses lots of examples, pauses for questions and encourages participation from his students. Great prof.
Helpful, accessable and clear in all explanations. Excellent prof. Gotta be one of the best I've had.
He's a great teacher. He's funny, and outgoing and has effective teaching methods. The material is generally pretty easy. You NEED to keep up with reading the textbook and practice questions. He picks HARD questions for the exam. The average was 50% on the first midterm when it was easy stuff. Good teacher but HARD exams
Super approachable teacher, dedicated to helping students succeed. He has a website with all course info and practice q's. Makes content very clear and encourages student participation. I hated math and he makes it interesting and fun! Take his class!!!
good over all Encourages students to ask... Devote his time for his students... But horrible in marking!!! He tends to give low marks in assignments and exams for no rational reasons And that is enough for me to avoid his classes.
Super helpful. Had tons of extra things you could do for more practice. The only thing i didn't like about him was his quizzes were extremely hard. harder than the exams. but overall a good prof, take math with him if you can.
Super easy to follow, pay attention and you should be fine.
Loved having Rob as my teacher! I hated math before I took his class and now I was to take more. He does go fast in class, so make sure you pay attention. He makes himself extremely available to students and takes time to help you. I just wish he would start keeping the class quite. It get quite loud and distracting
he is such good prof! he could help you a lot. the best prof i have never had, especially compare the prof Mendelsohn(i am taking his class-calculus 1), ROBERT IS THE BEST!
Really good teacher!
Robert is a great teacher, he is outgoing, he explains things clearly, and he makes sure everyone understands the concepts before moving on. He also has a website with lots of helpful resources. Only downside was that his "tutorial" quizzes were really difficult, harder than exam questions.
Professor Borgersen is always willing to help students in person or via e-mail. He has a class website with practice questions, assingments, and examples. Overall, his tests and final exam are difficult, but if you pay attention, you should have no problem passing the course.
pretty hard course but prof willing to help. Sometimes explanations unclear, examples specific to one question so didn't help in the general sense. Pretty good prof overall, but quizzes hard and he hadn't taught course in a while so not prepared ahead with notes, would've been nice. Korytowski gave assignments before labs but nothing from Rob
Awesome teacher! Makes himself super available, super nice and outgoing! I definitely recommend him for any math class. Makes you actually like math!
He explains things very well and does a lot of examples. He is very available and the fact that he uses his own website and his schedule is available there is really helpful.
Rob explained everything very well and made it easy to understand. I hated going to math class until i had math with Rob, best prof so far.
Overall good prof!
Often is not clear when speaking, talks too quickly and is rude or snarky when asked for clarification. I've never had a prof this bad in the last 3 years at uofm.
Rob does a lot of examples in class but rarely explains what he's doing or how to solve similar problems. Wastes a lot of class time discussing topics that aren't relevant to subject material. Also speaks too quickly and doesn't provide sufficient time to take down the notes he provides on the projector. He's funny, but his teaching style is poor.
Marks very harshly. Gives more work than he marks and randomly chooses which questions will count after the fact. Often left crucial info out of lecture since it was on assignment then tested on it despite it never having been actually taught. I will never take his class again.
First course in my uni career(two years)that I didn't get an A. Teaching style too laid back. No assigned homework. He quickly does examples during class and half of the time they are not realted to the exam questions. I put 8+ hours of studying into the first midterm and the exam was nothing like the suggested work, got 26/61.
Talks for the first 30 minutes of class about his personal opinions, and uses up valuable time he could be using to teach extra examples. Midterm was nothing like class time spent on problems, and nothing like suggested homework. He won't answer any questions about the exam or give any kind of outline. A lot of cumulative Calculus 1 problems.
Very good easy going professor. Does spend time at the beginning of every class for students to ask questions which is good. Overall good proff!
VERY helpful teacher, explains things very well and is super helpful. I would highly recommend taking one of his classes!
This prof means well and is easy to understand. He also has a lot of good resources available to you throughout the course. However,he wastes too much time talking about irrelevant topics and the quizzes in his section are not fair, very cumulative and discouraging. Personally I found the exams easier than the quizzes.
He speaks English and has a ton of resources available to you. If you buy the textbook and do tons of examples, you should do fine in his course. He seems like a really good teacher, but as others have said he wastes a lot of time at the start of classes instead of just teaching. Regardless, he still is the best math prof I've had.
Would ABSOLUTELY recommend him for ANY math class. He spends a lot of time in the beginning of class going over questions from textbook if you ask him to. Very helpful, and really cares about students succeeding. Highly recommend going to class, and take notes. Do the suggested exercises and go to labs. Put in the work and the grade will show it.
hes incredibly annoying but he's a good prof that answers any questions you have
Wasted an enormous amount of class time at the beginning of every lecture, probably like 15 minutes every class. Great course website with tons of resources. Did not have any review classes before the final and rushed through the last 2 units in order to finish covering course material. Quizzes were difficult compared to lecture style.
Rob was a very cocky and condescending professor. He had little interest in understand and/or teaching the topics that were out of his comfort zone, ie the "applied" section of calculus II. However, he does know his material when it comes to raw math, and is a reasonably generous grader. Not recommended to those who have a hard time understanding
Very good pro!!
I didn't care for Rob's class, mostly because he spent the first 15-20 minutes "asking if we had questions" but really he just complained about how high school hasn't prepared us for anything. Other than that, he is pretty helpful. He allows students to contact him basically 24/7 via Skype, which is really cool. Make sure you do textbook questions.
Great Professor
I will never take his class again. Too many questions in the assignment but he just marks a liitle. Also exam is hard, the class average for the second term test is about 50 percent. Too manty proof questions on the exam and assignemnt. I totally have no ideas about these provement.
Math 2300 is a super tough class, so take at your own risk! He really knows the material, but the notes given aren't always the best. Assignments are incredibly long and only a few questions per assignment are marked, so you're doing a lot of work for nothing!
Rob is the WORST professor I have ever had. Period. He wastes so much time on pointless anecdotes and useless chatter. It's like he wants to be your friend and forgets he actually has a course to teach. Be prepared to learn NOTHING in his lectures and don't bother asking for help because he talks his way around giving you any useful information.
Best prof I've ever had!! He cares about how well you do in the course and wants you to succeed. There is some unnecessary talk during lectures but math takes practice and the only way you're going to learn is if you sit down and do it on your own. His lectures are more for motivation and clarification. You can easily pass without going to class.
Rob was very encouraging and passionate about the material. He also advertised his office hours a lot. Although, he is hard to get a hold of, and when in his office hours he is a shell of his lecture self. He really encourages questions in the lectures, but avoids giving any real answers to the questions.
Rod teachs very little knowledge, basic theories that if you read the book, you can find more usefulk infos than goin to his lecture. He changes the theory opposite to what in the book cause so many confusion, why change it? Just explane what the book said. Exam is long like a bible, do not have time to think. Just keep writing for 3 hours straigh.
Okay, so I was really impressed with Rob. Yes first name basis is allowed because: he is an honest, personable, prof who is here for you/wants you to succeed. He gives clear notes that go along great with the "textbook" (which btw I used religiously front page to back). If you are willing to put in the time, he makes himself very accessible for you
Rob is a very dynamic and motivated lecturer, and clearly explains the material. However he has high expectations of his students and makes exams very difficult. Practice every day and you'll do fine
Don't ever take a class with him. The book says something and he explains it in a different way, and the assignments are different too! It's really messed up. His office hours are not useful at all, as he doesn't make sense when he answers your questions. And he would always waste 20 minutes at the begging of the class. Has very bad TAs too!!!
Wastes a ton of time. Was late almost everyday. Wasted about 15 min per class talking about nothing. Took forever to mark anything. Marking was inconsistent between students and sections. Office hours were booked solid, impossible to get in. When he did teach he was alright, but in all this course was a gong show... an overall bad experience.
Really nice guy, wants you to do well, tests were very fair. Really easy to talk to in person, has office hours, allows students to Skype him, and lets students book an appointment with him online. Chances are if someone said his office hours were completely booked they tried to make the appointment the day before cause I had no problem
Rob is probably the slowest when it came to teaching compared to the other profs. Although, he is very passionate about teaching and makes sure you understand the topic. He is very organized, goes into detail on important lessons although he skipped a lot (useless stuff not on final). I would recommend him to anyone taking MATH 1500.
Rob was okay. He seemed like a nice guy, and wanted students to succeed, offers help over Skype and books office hours online.I had a hard time following the lectures, them were spent waiting for questions, used for joking and chatting with students and the other used to rush through the notes and examples, which often disagreed with the text
My complaints about Rob are that he spends too much time at the beginning of class on questions and anecdotes. Sometimes his explanations are rushed and unclear. However, he is funny and really wants to help his students through appointments, Skype, email, etc. I think he's a fairly good prof, but I think I would have done better with someone else
Good professor makes sure his students know their stuff
Half the class will be spent answering students questions and the other half explaining the days topic. Has lots of office hours and really wants students to succeed would definitely recommend.
Course was really easy but he made the midterm really long and most of the students were able to finish half of it only in the time given. 50% of the students dropped after that. The final was extremely easy and everyone aced it. If the midterm was reasonable would have got A+. His lectures are interesting but wastes a lot of time off topic.
Rob's teaching style is not very easy to understand and he expects people to catch on very quickly, and makes people feel stupid for asking questions if it's not the most intuitive thing. I retook the class with Michelle Davidson and her explanations were 1000% better. Very hard assignments and midterm, but not the worst prof ever. Also indimidatin
Not an easy course whatsoever, but if anyone can help you prepare, its Rob. He is very upfront about what you have to do to succeed in calculus and he is willing to help students with their questions. He tries to mix in humor to make the class light and tells his own experience in math class to relate to the students.
Amazing prof, explains things perfectly, makes you understand everything extremely well. Tough grader, but very fair, and tells you exactly what you did wrong and how to fix it.
Definitely accessible during his office hours, but not very friendly or helpful compared to how he acts and displays himself in the lectures. Why you always in engineering buying your coffee Rob?
The day after lecturing us about how much pride he takes in teaching and how students are so important to him, he goes on strike screwing the entire class over!! Not to mention wasting 70% of every class talking about what we did on the weekend, Every. Single. Class. Only about 15 minutes of actual teaching in each lecture.
Rob is overall a decent prof but often gets carried away talking about random stuff. I would say 50% of the class is him telling us about a new app to download and the other 50% is teaching.
Rob's decent, but he's got a lot to improve on if he wants to make it in the dog-eat-dog world of math profs. This guy wastes so much time during lectures, but for the 10 minutes he does teach, it's mostly clear and understandable. If his course was being sold like a medicinal ingredient, the label would say "take at your own risk".
Wasted 20 min at the beginning of every class talking about random topics. Also, would take marks off if answers were not worded properly. Was on his phone the whole time during my scheduled office appointment with him. Textbook taught me more then he did.
tough grader. Really tough, logical answer is not enough. Average score of this class often around 50%. Never take his class again
Rob is really a tough grader. Believe me if you want to do well, you got to be 100% good. He is always looking for ways to take out marks e.g if you put a minus sign where it ought not or you get all answer correct but miss a decimal point, he deduct 1 mark each. (Just to show how tough he marks). Still, he is a great prof, but a tough grader.
I'm not too sure why people are saying he's a tough grader, he grades fairly. Furthermore, he courses can be hard for many, but the average fail rate isn't his fault. He does everything in his power to ensure his students pass, offering labs and extra office hours. If you don't take advantage of those your poor grade is not his fault. Great prof.
worst instructor i ever had. the paste of course is quick, just give definition, no explain.
wont take his course again
Great prof, explained everything really well, and if you didn't understand something he would always take the time to explain in other words. Super accessible out of class and a very funny guy. Would definitely recommend this professor for any math course, especially discrete/combinatorics!
Very tough course, but he did an awesome job of explaining everything. For everyone saying that he was a bad prof, he was always willing to explain things again, and was super accessible in and out of class. Very caring towards individual students and did everything he could to help out when I needed help. Passed the course with an A thanks to him!
Not only he's a tough grader but he doesn't explain things properly. Math 1240 is a class that's supposed to help you write proofs properly but didn't go over. He emphasize the importance of writing proofs correctly but didn't teach it. There were a lot of the final exam questions that we have never went over in class. Nice guy, but horrible prof.
Wastes an insane amount of time in class which makes him struggle to fit everything in at the end. A hard class but it doesn't help that he doesn't know how to manage time. Do lots of examples over and over until you are flawless at everything. Incredibly unnecessarily hard marker as well.
spent most of the class talking about things that were not relevant or going into dept on simple questions that should have been answered outside of class. He liked to waste time.
Uses time to emphasize problems. Just showing up to class and listening to the examples he does can provide you with the tools needed to pass. Is a decently hard and specific marker.
Whenever i attend his class, i feel wasting my time, especially, after having feedback on quiz and test. Super sad. He wastes time on talking some other topic; finishes all lecture in a short time, which makes the lecture hard to catch up. And he goes through all definitions so quickly. A lack of example makes the definitions hard to understand.
He expects students to solve any question only his way, else you will be graded less than half or zero.
Rob did a great job teaching the course. This wasnt my first time taking this course, but the first attempt did me no favors. Rob has an interesting style of teaching, almost an his way or the highway kind of thing. However this left me with a clear understanding of exactly what i needed to learn, and how to. Overall Rob did good.
He's the most self-absorbed prof I've ever had, I only say this because he takes up lecture time talking about himself. The other overwhelming issue I have and my classmates have had is that he is so unsupportive. Yes you can see him after class or email him. But he is not encouraging, you walk away feeling stupid or like you cannot possibly do it.
Such a great guy! Really cares about his students, doesn't make you feel stupid asking a question. Doesn't post his notes online, you need to write everything but he gives you time. The textbook is necessary for practice. Is impossible to see outside of class. Doesn't have real office hours, and is never available for appointments.
Teaches everyone very clearly. No excuse to get a low grade unless you do nothing. Added to my understanding of math. Very available, even does Skype calls at any time of day. Good prof all around, and a good guy too.
Really tough grader. Claims he doesn't have enough time to go through the material that the course requires. Tested your memorization skills rather than your ability to understand the concepts
He is a tough marker but he gives very clear marking scheme. So If you follow what he tells you, It will be a easy course. He is also a great prof who knows how to teach. He has good office hours , he may skype with you if you need. Best math prof ever!! You'll like him.
Borgersen grades extremely harshly and tells you the first day that he doesn't have a Ph.D, so even though he didn't work hard to jump through all the hoops, he expects you to do so for a 1000 level class. The questions are harder than those in the book and he covers material too fast. I would recommend you never take any class from this man.
Goods comments here are made by him! Got A+ on my Calculus classes but not on Linear because of this prof. Avoid avoid!
May be a mathematical genius, Good guy but a terrible prof!
Very clear expectations set at the start of the semester. Great flexibility with lectures, will always answer questions on lecture or assignment materials. If you have the textbook you can miss the occasional lecture and not far too behind. Very eager to help and has lots of office hours. You can even Skype him whenever you need.
Rob is phenomenal Professor everyone who says otherwise is because they didn't do well in his class. Math 1240 is a very difficult class, you cannot expect the prof to teach you everything you need to learn a lot of the topics on your own to truly understand the material. Rob is always available outside of class and answers any and every question.
It seems like this prof made the comment below. Don't be fooled with this guy. Avoid.
Fantastic professor with entertaining lectures. Always asking the class how he can make his course better. If you slack off even a bit though, you will be catching up the entire term. Do your assignments early and study as much as you can. He's a tough grader and goes into detail why you lost marks. He supplies a lot of extra study material.
He seemed extremely friendly in class however one-on-one he was judgemental and not very helpful. He made it obvious he cared and liked to teach. My biggest issue with him is we wasted half of every class discussing useless topics unrelated to the course and spent very little time actually learning and practicing the content.
I guess either student very liking him or not. I really liked him, and someone keep saying he grades very tough but there are worse prof who grades tougher so .. if you like to participate in class, he is perfect! You may able to lead whole class. He is nice, also he was nice at his office hour and very helpful!
Great Prof. Best math professor I've had so far. You can see he loves teaching and wants his students to succeed. Has a contagious love and passion for math. He can be tough on his students, but in a way that pushes them to try harder, do better. Great lectures. Made 75 minutes feel like ten. Would definitely recommend him
Great instructor. Math 1240 is difficult, and some think it's his fault, but i know people who said it was way worse with other profs. Loves teaching, is willing to help with concepts/questions from other classes too. Took 1240 with him, and am doing 2030 with him currently.
I'm surprised to see negative reviews for this guy, he's great! He really cares about helping his students. He definitely gives difficult quiz/test questions but that's because he actually expects his students to learn and doesn't just give out easy A's. If you really want to learn math, take a class with him!!!
Passionate about his job; cares about students passing, but makes you aware of how difficult the course is and the work you'll have to put in. Works hard to make sure he's available outside of class, and very organized both on UMLearn and in class. You'll want to attend lectures though because that's where you learn the most content.
His tests are meant to trick you not to test overall understanding of material. He loves having power and uses it to destroy students grades on exams. Exams don't cover the entire course material, instead focus on material learnt 3 days before the exam. Loves testing on proofs, only because he knows them and you have seen them before. Avoid !!!
Rob, nice guy, available all the time for extra help. However, Math 1240 is a terrible class and is very poorly set up. Class is very willy nilly and textbook work is nothing like exams, waste of time overall. I would say never take this class ever. I bet you it won't even exist in a couple years that's how poorly run it is
Rob made Combinatorics 1 a really fun course to take. He is passionate about mathematics and really wanted you to be as enamoured by the subjects as he is. I would say that the textbook was truly valuable and doing as many exercises as you can would be a smart idea.
He spent most of the class asking if people had questions, which they didnt. Hed just wait or talk about nothing until there was 30 minutes left and then finally start the lecture. He rushes through notes and examples because of this. There is always a lineup outside his office and his online appointment scheduler never had unbooked time. Sad!
Mr. Roberta Borgosen is an okay prof. I don't like the way he inserts himself into our private conversations but apart from that he's not too bad. His lectures consist of him not doing much for the first 30 minutes and then rushes to teach 50 minutes of content in the remaining time. Office hours are nonexistent.
Trash.
overall, ROB is an okay prof, he can be really slow at the beginning of the class and rushes everything towards the end of the class which is super annoying. And he literally takes extra time out of his class hours after wasting time asking for questions. a pretty easy course if you study hard . office hours are never available which makes no sense
Really cares about the students
This course is way too easy and Rob is such a cool prof! Would definitely love to come back to another of his courses.
Rob is really a great prof, I dropped 1500 when i failed the midterm a couple semesters ago, and after taking his class i had a 38% jump on my midterm mark. He really tries to explain things in different ways to help it click for everyone, and is available almost 24/7 with skype calls and hell answer any question, no matter what level (even HS)
Sys he loves teaching, but dont be fooled, hes not really helpful outside class.
He really stresses on having to do most of the covering topic on your own. He is very accesible outside of class, and would answer your question right away if you email him. If someone asks a question in class he would answer it in details but it does take most of the class time. He really does care for his students and want them to do well.
Rob is different from my other Math professors such that he is readily more available and willing to whenever you need help. With regards to the material, he teaches you all you need to know - there really isn't a lot. It's really up to the student to know the proofs and techniques and concepts beforehand and practice them on their own time.
Rob was the only reason I was able to pass this course. His lectures and notes (which he posted online without examples) were clear. He was fast on getting back to any questions I had from his class and he seemed like a nice guy that cared about his students. I would take a course with Rob again.
Rob is without a doubt the most caring professor Ive ever encountered but also the least helpful. Office hours are non existent. At the start of every class he goes on these 30 minute inspirational spiels and wont start until everyones asked their questions. You could have so many classes with all the time he wastes talking.
Rob is good with his lectures. He uses Telegram app to make it easier for students to contact him and typically replies within the day. One thing I don't like having him as a prof is that he would almost spend 20 mins of the class asking students for questions (which is good) and add stories not really necessary in class. Too much time wasted.
Rob is an absolute Beauty! he is super funny and energetic which keeps your attention. He does waste a lot of time talking at the start of class but e would always have enough time to get through the lecture. He teaches the course very well and if you do the practise questions you will have no problem getting at least an A
Wastes so much time the first half of each lecture. Not accessible after class is over. No office hours really. Not super nice either
Robert is an okay professor and that's me being nice lol. I failed the second test and switched to track B with Angel and ended up getting a 100 on it. Rob just rushes through the units and isn't thorough enough. I don't recommend him but if you do have him, just voluntarily switch to track B if you want to pass.
Rob is a great teacher. Needs to digress at the beginning of class. The pace of the course is extremely fast but you'll pass w/ an A+ if you work for it. He is very accessible outside of class via Telegram. The reviews that say he's bad because they did better in Track B are likely biased, Track B gets to relearn/study ENTIRE units again.
Rob is a really nice person but just doesnt know how to present his lecture materials in a presentable way. he spends a lot of time chitchatting at the beginning then throws a math problem in for us to solve. Then we start rushing over the lecture material
Lectures were tough to learn from because of how rushed they are. We spent a lot of time learning how hard this course is and how we don't have a lot of time but that wasn't reflected in the lectures. I stopped going to them and spent the time just learning on my own from the textbook and just talked to him when I needed specific help.
Terrible. No office hours but uses telegram, quite rude when I tried asking questions on there. Ridiculously unfair marking. 75+% of my class failed the second test and he didn't seem too bothered by that. Wastes so much time and doesn't hesitate to remind everybody about 'how hard this class is'. Terrible lectures, very hard quizzes/tests/exam.
Rob is really accessible outside of class and cares about his students. He does host beginning of class discussions, yes, but I think that's only an issue depending on the class you are taking and if he needs to rush it or not, mine was not rushed at all. He gets bad ratings because 1240 is so hard but it is not his fault. I found his class fun
Teaches the material well, and makes fair exams (with bonus questions!). He's quite passionate about math too, and seems like a nice guy. As other reviews have said, he does take questions at the beginning of lectures which in a smaller class like this wasn't a big deal, but with a big class like 1240, this might take up too much time.
He does a lot of these things that waste lecture time and so lectures end up being pointless. I wish he could stop with all of that jargon and actually teach content material. He is very good at explaining but can be condescending when you ask questions. Not very approachable. But seriously... TEACH some content and stop wasting learning time
A lot of people in my course thought he talked too much rather than actually teach, which I too agree on but he's not a bad teacher. He knows his stuff. He may be a little aggressive when teaching, as in, he can sound a bit rude when answering questions but he gets the point across. Makes jokes. All in all, I personally enjoyed him as a professor.
He made very simple content harder with convoluted explanations, which were rushed through in the back half of the lecture. Due to strange circumstances, my class had three different professors, and Prof. Borgersen was by far the worst. Despite being funny and approachable, his test was rather long for the time allotted.
Found the course extremely difficult and he helped a ton. Didn't have the background but I put in the effort which he could see and he was more than willing to match the effort as he could see how important it was to him. He likely saved my degree from falling apart quite early. Went out of his way to help and at all times of the day.
He has you watch a 5 minute lecture video, and then that's all you learn about the topic. It's hard to follow
The class I took with Professor Borgersen was MATH 1010 and it had a weird setup with an A track and a B track. If you failed a test, you moved to the B track to remediate, and then if you didn't do well on a test in the B track you automatically fail the course. It was a lot of pressure. Make sure to do the homework!!!
Hes not a nice guy
if you want to spend your money self teaching yourself this is the course to take. I learned nothing from the lectures whatsoever. The videos are minutes long and you are expected to understand the whole unit after that. Take 1210 with a different prof.
Doesn't really teach anything, short barely helpful prerecorded lectures, live lectures where he wastes ridiculous amounts of time, we had to teach ourselves the course out of a barely readable textbook, minimum grade for an A is 84, 100% of grade is tests and quizzes. Absolutely never covers enough content to do the practice questions.
His pre-recorded lectures are just minutes long where only cover the bare minimum of a unit, then you are expected to be able to do all practice problems. He also has live class time where you can ask questions but he moves incredibly slowly and talks about random things it just feels like a waste of time. Test material is not in practice problems
Rob's lectures were too vague to be helpful. Most lectures were 10-15mins meaning you'll want to find supplemental videos to be able to answer any of the 100 homework problems he assigns that week. Live sessions are mostly Q&A. All tests and quizzes took weeks to get marked even if the quiz had a single question. Nice guy though.
Learned more from the textbook and YouTube then from him.
All tests, no assignments, brief lectures that don't cover enough material, unreasonably hard tests, arrogant condescending attitude towards students, acts like we are already supposed to know the entire subject before starting the course.
This prof sets up his class really weird. He weeds out kids first test into a track a and track b. I never worked so hard in a class and I have a 4.25 GPA and, 5 classes per a semester. I see a tutor, 2 timed a week at a cost of $1070 a month and still almost failed, my tutor told me its not me its our 35 min time limits on exams!! pretty upset.
Take with different prof.
In one word. TERRIBLE
take this class with another professor. trust me
The way he set up the class is weird with the whole Track A and B system. The first Track is him using the class time as office hours while your expected to learn on your own using his videos(which are vague) and the textbook. Track B is a different class with a different prof who does a better job at teaching. The exam times are also too short.
Take this class with another prof. His pre-recorded lectures cover the absolute bare minimum. His live lectures are a waste of time. His tests are incredibly unreasonable, and he even refuses to take critiscism regarding it even though a large majority of the class is likely to fail. Avoid at all costs
Horrible teacher and terrible grader. He did not accept my quiz because it took my system 4 seconds to upload so I was 4 seconds late!
Inconsiderate, insensitive, and condescending prof. Doesn't work with students' needs and not willing to compromise at all. He won't care about you. Doesn't teach at all, just have videos that are barely helpful uploaded. You're better off studying and doing practices on your own. AVOID TAKING IT WITH HIM.
He is not a good professor. he has made an absolutely easy course so difficult almost the whole class is complaining. Uploads worthless videos where he reads of a pdf. who teaches math from reading pdfs. Avoid at all costs!
This is the worst prof I have ever had. In his lectures he covers the bare minimum on what he expects us to do, yet on the tests we get these insane questions that are very difficult to do. There is no help whatsoever and the prof is extremely arrogant. Do not take this class with this guy!
Worst prof ive ever had. Incredibly inconsiderate, he does not care about his students what so ever. Gives awful lectures, no explanations and then very hard tests on things he has not covered. If you do bad he basically calls you stupid.
He is very egotistical and believes us students already have the knowledge of a math major.
Changed how 1210 tests and quizzes work. Online lecture videos provide the most basic of examples (if an example is even included) and does not match the questions given on the tests. I did better in calc. courses, 1510 and 1710 which says a lot. Nice guy, but cmon... no need to make tests unnecessarily hard.
Rob is very inconsiderate, during the first test I passed but I was dropped to track B even though I complained about having network issues and he said I was responsible for my network. how can I be responsible for the network am I the wires. he doesn't even care, once you are 1 sec late to submit, he'll fail you and will not listen to your reason.
The lectures aren't super helpful, students just ask questions because we're supposed to teach ourselves with the textbook and posted videos. I know he failed a few students' tests because they had internet troubles and couldn't hand test answers in on time, which is so stupid. Test marks take a while to get back so you're left worrying all weekend
Wastes so much time at the beginning of lectures that he often only has time to do one or two practice problems in class. Test questions are so much harder than any of the textbook practice questions. Time frame for the tests is actually crazy fast and often don't have enough time to finish the quizzes and tests. Take this class with different prof
poorly run course. lectures consist of q&a section, required watches are lacking in content and variety of coverage of class materials, quizzes and term tests range from easy to impossible (usually in the section of term tests, impossible). unreachable over one of his provided communication methods, refuses to listen unless booked for a meeting
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS HE TEACHES. The questions he gives in class are the most basic and simple questions and then on quizzes and tests you get questions like nothing covered in class or in the textbook. The average in my class was around 30% for each quiz and test, horrible prof, AVOID at all costs!
I took precal in highschool and averged in the 70's. I found the course itself hard, especially since you basically have to teach yourself and class time is used mostly for solving problems. Rob does a great job at explaining, super easy going guy that sets very clear expectations. As long as you put the work in you'll pass
Do not take this course if you have anxiety. The track A/B system puts so much pressure on tests, and 35 minutes is not enough time to write. I had trouble sleeping some nights because of the tests.
Wish I could give him a 0.... like he gave to every single person in the class one of our quizzes. Avoid avoid avoid avoid is all I can say about him.
Track A/B system is convenient but you have to pass every test or youll fail the course.
Class time was wasted tremendously. Tests and Quizzes are nothing like the textbook. Even if you do every single textbook problem and UNDERSTAND THEM you still will not be prepared for the tests, quizzes and exams. The questions tested on is beyond course level. When you ask for help he is very rude about it and is not approachable.
He made it much harder than it should've been. The tests seemed like they weren't related to the textbook. Take the class with a different prof.
The tests are really hard and the marking is sometimes unfair. In the beginning, the course was poorly run and disorganized, but it did improve. The lectures are pre-recorded and class time is used for questions which I don't think worked for a lot of people though. Overall, it's definitely nowhere near as bad as most of the reviews of the class.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. I have a 4+ GPA saying that so it's not like I failed and am just frustrated. He's just unreasonable and not nice. Also, he doesn't actually teach at all except for a few recorded videos. You have to teach yourself as he only does examples in class and doesn't lecture.
He is a great prof, hilarous and he gave so many resources for extra practice to get yourself up to speed. I did applied math in high-school and got in the 70s but this course is so hard and found myself trying to get up to speed. Definitely need to put lots of time into this course. That said it is possible to pass with dedication and hard work.
Rob seems to find pleasure in students failing. Tests are purposely made difficult to trick students. Class average is low. I average A in most classes and will most likely finish this course closer to a C. I will be contacting the department with my concerns following the end of this course. This course is purposely set up for failure.
He does very little actual teaching beyond brief introduction videos to concepts often with either simple or non-existent examples. Classes are spent anwsering questions and the tests look nothing like the textbooks or his lecture material. He also brags about how high the fail rate in continually.
this class is meant for people who struggle in math but it is not taught that way. tests are very very rushed and he puts extreme emphasis on being able to solve problems crazy fast. not super accomodating or understanding of students. the digital textbook is only accessible through abode digital editions which is a slow, horrible program.
He doesn't really teach the assigned chapters. He expects you to teach yourself everything, then goes over two or three examples in class, which is for an hour. He's not a fair marker and his tests are a little bit too hard for a math 1010 course.
He is patient, makes sure you understand what's being taught. Is quite clear with explanations and makes sure to notify students what is expected of them. His teaching style is engaging and not monotonous and he is quite clear with ideas and concepts. Highly recommend looking for a course with him as a professor.
Very clear lectures. Don't listen to the negative reviews, even with online classes, he gives fair tests and has multiple safety nets for technology failure. He evidently cares for students, and answers almost all questions he is asked clearly and thoroughly. He could probably teach graph theory to a goldfish and have it understand entirely.
Don't take Rob if you are not very good at math in the first place. He can be very condescending and does not sound like someone who should really be teaching. I went to the other profs' lectures for comparison and they answer conceptual questions with clarity and with concern for the students' understanding. This prof does not care, AT ALL.
As someone who took pre cal in high school and ending with 80+, this prof is not for someone who struggles with math. The tests are 40 minutes long and he likes picking the longest and hardest questions. He expects you to know the material like the back of ur hand and if you dont, you will not succeed with him as a prof. He is nice but not easy!
You will have to put the work in if you want to do well in this class. He is good at explaining the material in engaging way.
Rob's lectures were clear and to the point. Additionally, each lecture started with a brief discussion about goal setting, expectations, and general "how to succeed in university". These are very useful.
I was very anxious to take this class, but the professor explained things so clearly that it was not too difficult to pass every test. I did not buy a text book, and it may be different in person, but during my online class I didn't have to. He explained things so well in the lecture videos that I was able to grasp every concept pretty well.
Rob is a very good professor and will teach you the fundamentals of calculus needed to succeed in higher level math courses. He encourages goal setting and overall has very clear and to the point explanations
I liked him but I can see why people wouldn't like him. 3 tests, 50 minutes each for 90% of final grade (for the tests, you get 3-4x the amount of time that it would take him to do the questions). Not difficult content but in order to get fast enough, you'll have to do lots of practice problems otherwise you will not finish the tests. Good Prof.
Great guy! Reminded me of my high school math teacher (in a good way). He was good at answering and questions you messaged him and provided lots of help and examples in and out of class. Fair marker but had hard tests
The lectures are useless. I think we got through like 1 practice question every class, and the rest of it was spent with him ranting about something unrelated (like payday loans??). Leading up to our final test, there was a lot of time wasted in the lectures on redundant information, and there wasn't really an effort to prepare us properly. Avoid:)
You have to master questions. 20 minutes to do a 10 question quiz that are long problems. Tests are hard. You watch a 5 minute video on your own time before class then he goes over 2 problems during class, unlike the ones you will do on assignments or tests. He is willing to help, but can be discouraging. Study A LOT and you will do ok in the class
Rob is quite good at actually teaching material, although most of the teaching is done in pre-recorded videos. A pedantic first-year prof is arguably a good thing to set good habits for students. However, I often find Rob's (and by extension, his TA's) harsh grading unfair: his standards are ambiguous/unclear at best, and inconsistent at worst.
Do not take this class with this prof. He does not explain the class material or teach you. He goes over 1 example in a 50 minute class period. Then spend the other time talking about random stuff like the tunnels at the university. He expects you to learn everything on your own. He also chooses the hardest s questions for tests.
Class set up is you watch the actual lecture content in 5-30 min videos on your own time. And then class is just him going over examples and answering questions, which I actually liked. I found he wasted A LOT of class time 1) being late every day 2) talking about slightly irrelevant things. Practice TONS and utilize his office hours is my advice
I had the chance to have him on summer, you better get serious at studying cuz the class moves with such fast pace you may struggle to keep up. Rob is a great prof though and tries to employ his class time on examples and questions students may have on the topics. Whether you take it on summer or winter it is a difficult course so Good Luck.
good attitude on teaching, but really tough grader
Took this class in 2020. In my 4th year of my degree and still by far the worst learning experience I have ever had. So bad that I had to come back and write a review 3 years after taking the course.
I didn't do great in this class, but I think that's down to me not studying rather than the prof being bad. I would say that I found MATH 1700 much easier than this class.
I hate you
He likes his job but wastes time during lectures, and tests were extremely over-the-top difficult. He and the other profs don't seem to realize what's a difficult test question and what isn't. While he seems to love his job and wants to engage people, he manages to still teach very little in class. Made a relatively easy course unnecessarily hard.
He kind of talked to the class in a condescending manner and constantly brought up how most people will fail. A little bit of a pessimistic attitude but he was funny. Tests and quizzes were fair but final exam was hard.
The professor is hit-or-miss - lectures can be disorganized, but he's good at explaining concepts. Attend office hours and use unstuckstudy ai along with the textbook to succeed.
Came back to leave another hateful review. The biggest pessimist on campus. If you want to feel worse about yourself during what is already a difficult time in your life, this will be your favourite professor. Most of the class failed a quiz, because it was too long. He demonstrated the following lecture how he could do it in the time frame.
