He is opiniated, and you must do everything exactly as he wants it, or he will slam you on the grade. You may not dislike him as much on the end, because some jokes grow on you, but beware the terms "back in mother england", and "cyclical.&
i am limited in what i can honestly say about this professor, as i dropped his class by W-day in order to concentrate on my other classes. my biggest problem with him was that he is VERY BORING.
He was a great teacher. He gave me good grades on my essays, and his multiple choice test was easy. He can be a litte full of himself.
great history teacher. It's like story time with him. Actually makes history interesting. He is demanding. He seems to treat students as adults, now that they are in college. He will help out where he can, but he won't hand out freebeeze.
I am about to graduate with a history degree from an out of state University and his class has been the only class that I have not made an A in! He is tough but informative
He is tough but fair. If you pay attention and work hard you will do well and learn a lot. I made an A and enjoyed his class
His tests require way too much detail to remember for a 50-minute essay. Not very clear on what topics are for picking, either.
Great class - brilliant teacher.
Great teacher...very intelligent on material...tests are very tough, yet take good notes and read the material well and they wont be so bad...Stale humor, yet funny b/c of how terrible his jokes are...
don't take him
Robert Burnham is an outstanding professor. I took two of his history courses; pre-Civil War and post-Civil War American History. Both were excellent. In his Honours courses, he requires very hard work and discipline, and has students write a primary research paper (very enjoyable). He has been incredibly helpful as a guide for my academic career.
yeha...he is o.k...you just gotta get use to his lectures and take notes all the time..and you will be fine...he leaves the work up to you. he is a little critical on the essays but if you listen and pay attention you should be alright.
Very smart man....takes history to a whole new level....he himself does the research for his own lectures and has some great stuff....his tests are hard and lectures long, but if you attend class and listen, you will get a decent grade and will enjoy being taught by him
He grades very unfairly, and the class is extremely boring
I thought I was doing fine in the class until I made a C on the first test. You have to study many many notes AND study the book. He also has us read a novel and do a writeup on it. I dropped halfway through
I took his honors course my freshman year which was a big mistake. His class was the only one I made a B in my first two years in college. I made all A's otherwise. He is very tough on grading and wants everything HIS way. I would not recommend him bc he will mess up your GPA if you have a high one.
If you like history and if you like someone talking to you the whole entire time then I recommend that you take him. I took him for a second session summer class and this class is like 4 hours long! He never let us out early! He grades pretty hard on the test and he makes you read a novel a write a critical analysis on it! Good luck!
Loves the sound of his own voice, and very aggravating!! Not helpful with learning!
Listen. Everybody who plans on taking History and getting an easy grade...go elsewhere. Dr. Burnham is not an easy grade. Im over halfway through the course and I have a C, and i LOVE history. Grades test wierdly, 1 multiple choice test 2 essay exams and a book review. Just take someone else he is not worth the hassel.
Very temperamental. He doesn't like questions in class. He lectures are non stop. The tests are very hard, and mostly essay. You have to do a book review, but don't expect to get an A in this class.
He is all the things the previous posters said BUT if you realize he likes essays to reflect what he taught in class you will do fine. Just repeat what he said in lecture on the essay and you should do well. I enjoyed the lecture.
Great professor who clearly loves what he teaches. He is not an easy grader and asks that his students read the textbook in conjunction with his class lectures, even though they sometimes do not agree. Dr. Burnham is not trying to get his students to think like he does or agree with everything that he says, he is simply attempting to get his stud
Really enjoys teaching history. A little bit long winded but still a good professor. Expects the students to act mature and wants to help improve our research skills about history.
Dr. Burnham is a pretty cool guy. I would take him again. I was AWFUL at history in hs but i made a B+ so he is obviouslly on the easy side. He expects you to write a detailed book review. The book is usually boring as hell. Exams are not bad, but the textbook doesn't really help. USE LECTURE NOTES!!! He wants you to THINK about history. take him.
Dr Burnham is very passionate about the subject and makes it very interesting to learn. He is also very understanding if you have special circumstances. He does test over the book info even if he doesn't discuss it in class so make sure your read the book!
He is a great story-teller. I was not particularly interested in post-civil war history, but I loved this class. He is clear about his expectations and grades fairly. He requires his honors students to do a research paper and gives extremely helpful advice along the way. I would definately take him again!!!!
Great professor! Interesting and very helpful.
This man is very thorough, covers tons of material, and gives somewhat difficult tests. You must attend class, pay attention to all his lectures, and study hard for his exams to pull off a B. He is kind of a jerk too.
If you're going to his class you need to be prepared. For one,you need to go to WalMart while the notebook paper is still on sale and rack up on about 4-6 packs of loose-leaf paper, and a couple packs of mechanical pencils, b/c when he starts talking he doesn't stop until class ends.Must attend class. But overall the man knows his stuff!I got a B!
He definitely knows his stuff! I would suggest taking notes on your laptop...he lectures and does NOT stop! His notes were pretty simple...very clear and understandable but his test were a bit difficult. Its alot of information, but if you have a good memory you should do fairly well. History is nothing but memorization anyway!
He is a very nice person but he does not know when to stop talking and throw in a joke. He knows his stuff and he will teach you if you show up to class. You have to read the book and take notes. He will ask questions from book and lecture and they are not easy.
Dr. B has been a good professor. I do wish though that he would slow down some. Be prepared to take 6 -8 pages of notes per class. Write fast! I found the class very interesting even though history is not my thing. He really hates cell phones so be sure to turn them off. He lectures completely from memory - amazing. Tests are straight up out of not
His is a good teacher. You have to keep good notes and make sure you include anything you can think of for the essay exams.
i hated his class so bad! he never uses the textbook in class but then has questions on his tests that only pertain to the textbook...if you have his class i would recommend getting another teacher ASAP!!!
he was the worst teacher ever! he talks the whole class, he is extremely boring, he never lets you leave early and expects you to read the textbook over his lecture outside of classtime and he has questions on the test that you can only answer if you read the text. whatever you do...DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
I was warned against him, but after taking the class it really wasn't that big a deal. Sure, for people who want a free ride through college he isn't what you want. But he isn't the big bad wolf, so as long as you actually take notes and study from time to time you'll do just fine.
Great professor but not an easy class for those looking for an easy way out. Textbook was really not a big deal. Tests were over lecture material so take extremely good notes on EVERYTHING he says and you will do fine. First test multiple choice and rest are essay.
I think that Dr. Burnham was a great teacher. You HAVE to take notes and you HAVE to write the book review. The essay topics he gives you are rather vague though. So Dr. Burnham if your reading this be more specific please!! Overall a good teacher and easy to do well if you try.
He was a very hard teacher. You have to take notes, and he talks the entire class. You do not have a break. You have to take notes because most of his questions on the tests come from his lectures. If you are looking for an easy history class, I would not just him.
very good teacher... but you must be very attentive during lectures. reading the text book is beneficial for the first test, which is multiple choice. but he isn't very clear on whether he wants you to use his interpretation, the book's interpretation, or if he wants you to create your own historical interpretation...
he is okay but talks really slow and very annoying at times if youreasily frustrated do not take or u will snap on him, and fail
The best history professor ever. He has very interesting lectures and is easy to follow. His tests become fairly easy once you understand what he's going for, but still require alot of studying. If you want an engaging history class that is interesting and will teach you alot then he is highly recommended.
I didn't like him at first but he kind of grew on me. He considers himself to be a true history professor and he brings that mentality to class. His lectures are interesting but long. He lectures the entire class and take notes because a lot of the test comes from what he discusses. I enjoyed the class. It was interesting and not too hard.
This is the most pretentious, self-centered man I have ever met in my life. He has a serious "my way or the highway" attitude. If things are not done the way he thinks are "correct" he will belittle you and argue until you agree with him. He has the most aggravating way of talking and his lectures are boring and usually off topic. Stay away!
He is not a good professor. He never uses the book, his lectures are VERY boring, and he has a somewhat bad attitude. He gets angry and "thrown of track" if you are A minute late to class. I would not recommend his class to anyone.
Dr. Burnham's lectures are clear, he does get off track every once in a while. He goes backwards in the textbook. His essay exams are challenging, the MC essay is easy. Read the book, and take as many lecture notes are much as possible. ALOT of writing. ALOT.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!! he talks to fast you keep up and gets side track, his test are super hard and he doesnt use the book you have to read it yourself he assigns boring novels that you have to do a report that count as most ofyou grade!! ugh!!!! he hate when students correct him! i guess since he is a doctor he thinks the doc is never wrong
HE JUST KEEP ON GIVING LECTURES IN CLASS WITHOUT ANY STOP. IT IS VERY HARD TO PASS HIS CLASS, HIS LEVEL OF TEACHING AND EXAMINATION IS VERY BEYOND COLLEGE STUDENT LEVEL. HE CONSIDER ALL STUDENTS AS HISTORY MAJOR, AND GIVE VERY HARD TIME TO PASS HIS CLASS.
He is a horrible teacher. He talks non-stop. Tests are extremely hard. He is very monotone. Extremely dry. Boring. Dont take him.
At first I was scared of him. His first test was hard and so I went to his office for questions about the second test and found he is a really nice person. He is a really hard teacher. He expects you to know every detail. Study hard and take good notes.
He gives good lectures and has interesting classes but he is impossible to please! He says he is not a hard grader, but he is impossible! He said he expects broad answers for essay questions, but he marks off horribly if you don't included everything he wants. He doesn't offer help, even if you ask. He doesn't seem to care about students grades.
As a History major, I wish all my professors were like this. He is always on point and rarely gets off subject. Constant note taking is supplemented by the fact that he follows a lecture outline to the T. I probably learned more in his class than any other I have taken. If you are not a History major, I would advise against taking him.
I agree he gives great lectures and teaches well. But as a History major, I found him to be extremely unwilling to help and hard to please -which is unlike the other History professors in the dept. He grades hard and doesn't make it clear what he wants.
First test Multiple Choice, 2 essay tests, and a book review. You MUST attend his lectures or you will be LOST. Take tons of notes-I recommend using a voice recorder. Don't bother bringing textbook to class. Final exam topics: Civil War 1848 - 1864, 18th century thought vs 19th century thought, formation of 1st political parties. NOT EASY CLASS
Dr. Burnham is a great history teacher. He really knows what he is talking about. You do have to come to class, take notes, and study. It is not an easy "A". You learn a lot. He does give long lectures and you do not leave early, but he wants to teach you as much as he can in the time given. It is for your own benefit.
Very interesting class but I wouldn't take it unless you're intending to be a history major considering the professor really does know what he's talking about. I worked hard in the class and came out with a B so it's not an easy A by any means. Essay exams are very broad and thematic so you really have to prepare yourself very well before the test.
Please listen to my review. I promise that if you do not you will regret taking his class. He does not give study guides, outlines, or notes. You just listen and take notes. I received a C on his book review because my opinion on the book wasn't his opinion. I do normally make C's. If it had not been for his class I would have made all A's. Beware
I am a history major, and I came out of this class with a B. However, I worked extremely hard for it. His lectures were extremely dry and long. His exams were difficult. He would assign 2-3 topics, and the student would pick one and write a short essay on it. I do not recommend this professor, unless you have to take him. Study hard.
I absolutely loved this teacher. He was always very thorough and as long as you took notes in his class you passed. I think I may have opened the book once or twice. I would definitely recommend him as an instructor.
THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST PROFESSORS I EVER HAD. Firstly.he is dull and speeds through lectures. He isn't the type of professor who focuses more on his students.I email him for information whenever I miss class because of transportation issues and he never replies. His choice of books are meant to be hard and boring for his students.(LACK EXCITEMENT)
I am only a little over half way through into finishing my first course with this professor. I would consider taking him again. My first exam with him was terrifying, so I studied a lot and made an 89. His exams are very easy if you know the material and he also tells you what you need to know before hand. He is excited about his lecture.
I took him for American history as a dual enrollment class when i was a junior in high school. He's the type of teacher who refuses to give A's. I would study for his tests for days and never give me higher than an 89. He gives a term paper that is close to impossible to write. His lectures are boring and all of his tests are essays.
Dr. Burnham has a very precise way of teaching. His lectures are very informative, and if you take good notes you'll pass. On essay exams he expects you to understand the information, and analyze that information. He's easy to talk to, and appreciates students who put an effort. Don't interrupt or walk in late, you'll get the stank eye.
Dr Burnam was a great professor. He knew what he was talking about when teaching. His tests consisted of 2 or 3 essay questions that you had to choose from to answer. He expects thorough detail when answering. Can be a tough grader, but if you pay attention in class and take notes you'll be fine. His lectures can be boring at times.
This class was definately a challenge all of his tests, are essay form, therefore you must know the material when it comes to his class if not you will definately fail, also he gives a paper that's about 8-12 pages long and it counts as a big part of your grade, you MUST study in his class and do a lot of reading or else, this class is no joke
Had to do a term paper based on 2 months of reading a historic newspaper. I couldn't read every newspaper day. Also, exams were "broad thematic essay questions." Didn't like. Although, he does a great job at letting the students talk and writes a decent amount of feedback on everything you write. Didn't really use the book, just the lecture notes.
He's ok. If you take him, read your newspapers EARLY. The term paper is nearly impossible to write, so for this reason only I would not recommend him. His lectures are good though. He gets really mad if you walk into class late, use your phone, or fall asleep during class.
I took his class during a summer semester which is quite fortunate as I could really give 100% of my effort in the course. That being said it was a difficult "A" nontheless, be ready to write and take an insane ammount of notes. I honestly could write my own textbook with the notes I have. as long as you pay attention and prepare you're straight.
DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!! he is a complete joke when it comes to grading. You only have 4 grades the entire semester and they are all essays!!!!!! If u dont put exactly what he wants in ur essays then ur grade suffers tremendously!!!! Stay away!!!!
I mean, hes just a lad tbh i love him more than life xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
For our Honors History class, Dr. Burnham was very passionate about what he lectured on. However, the man always went at least 5 minutes over the end of class period. He does not post anything online (D2L) and gets annoyed if you ask questions. Overall, he wasn't the worst I've had but I certainly have had better. Would not take him again.
Worst teacher I ever had! Boring lectures: stands in front of class and talks, it is hard to stay focused. Only 2 tests, a term paper, and the final your grade The tests are essays that require you to basically know everything that he talked about in class. The term paper is a newspaper analysis. Only good thing: his classes are small!
Obviously very knowledgeable, but does not answer questions asked. He says that he will research the information and get back to you, but never does. His tests are all in an essay format... and final exam was two essays. Youre also not allowed to bring cue cards or notes.
Prof Burnham is very knowledgeable in his area of study, however his lectures are long and boring. He does not give specific details on how his essays should be, so in the end you'll get graded hard. Plus he answers questions vaguely. I recommend studying and reading the book on your own and doing his work early. If essays are hard for you, RUN!
It was very hard to take his class because you had to take a lot of notes. The feedback he gives on your papers is super cryptic and hard to tell what he wants you to write. He expects you to give a super long Harvard level essay on the Colonial world with only an hour to write it, even though we are at MGSU. I would avoid his class at all costs.
I pretty much liked his class only because he literally gave little to no work. There wasn't any classwork or online work. All he did was lecture every class and he only gave like 4 quizzes out of the whole semester, but he gave you the topics, so they were pretty easy to pass. I say take him!
I attempted his online summer class. He provided terrible study guides and over 60 pages of reading per unit. None of the questions on the quiz were covered on the study guides or textbook. I asked for advice and an extra credit assignment and he sent me a passive aggressive email basically saying I'm not trying hard enough. Had to drop.
His grading for all written assignments was not based on the prompt he actually gave you for the assignment. I got points docked for excluding subjects from papers that were not in the prompt. There was an excessive amount of reading, but a lot of the questions on quizzes were not explained in the assigned reading.
Only lectures and an outline. No visual aids, powerpoints, etc, just him talking. Three tests and one paper graded a bit hard.
Liked this class a lot and you can tell he cares a lot about the subject. His class is mostly lectures, but they're are at a good pace and I never felt like we were drowning in information, and they were very interesting compared to other survey classes. lots of essays though, so it might not be for everyone, but i really enjoyed it.
Honestly, He was not a good professor. He may be a great Historian, but a horrible professor. His lectures are impossible to follow, he doesn't even grade with the prompt of our quizzes, and he never stays on topic.
Do NOT take this class!! He is a professor who expects the impossible, especially with discussions and essays. The "study guides" are a joke, they do not have anything to do with what are on the quizzes. Essays and discussions are graded on who-knows-what. If you follow the guidelines word-for-word, you'll still get a bad grade. Bad professor.
Do not take classes under this professor. He refuses to provide any rubrics for any of his papers or discussion posts and is not clear in his descriptions as to his expectations. Even if you think you have checked off all the boxes and included every element of the essay or discussion, he will create things he expected in the post or essay.
This professor is one out of two classes I've taken over the summer. Despite being an online class and how accessible the textbook was and the material being "basic", as most people call it, I ended up with a C. I have NEVER received a C in my entire life. Don't take it unless you are great in history. Grades are harsh on writing assignments.
Prof Burnham is a great historian/prof, & isn't a hard grader. There are 4 quizzes and 2 exams aka very test heavy. Showing up to every lecture is very important to not miss content on the tests. Each quiz is a short essay and the exams are longer essays. There is no rubric, just make sure to cover the topics in the question. Honestly an easy A.
super vague grading criteria and refuses to provide a rubric even when asked, gives bad grades and confusing feedback. wouldn't take again
The only gripe I have about this class is that their are 2 essays and 2 reading responses and his grading criteria is not clear. He will knock points off for not discussing things that weren't even in his "rubric". Other than that the class was easy.
