He is the weirdest person I have ever met. He rambles on about nothing for hours. If you have no attention span do not take his class. Actually I would recommend not taking his class at all.
Prof. Burns is a nice guy but he rambles about absolutely nothing for 3 hours. his mid term was rediculous you had to memorize his quotes and syllabus! it is an easy class but if you cant sit still for 3 hours and pay attention DONT take this class! at times he can be creepy and def. has favorites!
AWFUL TEACHER!! stay far away from his class. His lectures are completely irrelevant and he just rambles about himself forever, for his midterm you had to memorize the syllabus(which is 7 pages long) RIDICULOUS.
He is an amazing teacher! He is always there to help you and if you care about the class you will DO WELL. He is very flexible with work and assignments. He also gives wonderful reconmendations! You learn a lot in his class as he knows something about everything. You do need a good attention spand to survive in his class, but this is college!
He's an honest guy, he's just extremely enthusiastic about what he's teaching. If you pay attention, you can learn a lot about things, even outside of communication. I think he's an alright dude.
Professor Burns is a great teacher. Don't listen to the bad comments. He's not 'cocky' he's just had many experiences he wants to share with us to help us grow. He really cares about the subject. He is very helpful and approachable. He loves to hear from students via e-mail or office hours. His tests are difficult but he really maps it out for you.
He's okay. talks about himself all the time... bombards students with emails, assigns lots of articles (mostly written by him). he's really intense about his field and it shows, but he expects everyone to love it as much as he does and assigns lots of projects
Helpful and interesting prof. in communication. Writes outstanding letters of recommendation for his students.
Had him in 2008. Helped me overcome my speech fears and never made me feel self-conscious. Still a great source for me in other classes. Is always kind to everyone I noticed too. I recommend him to my friends. Wrote me excellent letter of endorsement and that meant so much to me.
His class last semester helped me grow. I should have thanked him then. Very kind man.
He was so kind to me and helped me achieve. I overcame many speech communication fears in his course and also changed my major to Communication because of him. The only problem I had: He is not teaching many courses beyond Com 130. At least 20 other students said the same thing to me: we want more courses with him. He stimulated me to grow/learn!
Just finished his course and it did two things(1) Made me a more ethical and honest person (2) Made me see the importance of communication in ALL my subjects and life endeavors. He is one of the best and has a multi-cultural perspective and yet, he is VERY proud to be an American. He thinks in several cultures, but always as a superior communicator
Just completed the Com 130 course with him and it was my best experience at BSU so far. I transferred to BSU and was not a big fan of college education. Prof B changed my perspective and I love the fact that he wants MATURE students in his class. I cannot stand immaturity and he teaches to the mature students! Thank God! GREAT CLASS! LIFE CHANGING!
Very sincere and committed prof. I liked him because he teaches his classes for the mature and interested students. Best advice: take him if you really want to grow and learn. Run away if you are a goof-ball and immature. One other thing: he writes the best letters of recommendation. His letter opened a big door for me. I am really grateful for him
My best prof. so far at BSU. I transferred and he made me believe again in education. He brings his knowledge and his hope to every class. It's a shame some are too immature to get it, but he is doing what he teaches. He's an exquisite communicator and he speaks with command and conviction and understands various cultures and peoples. A+ professor
Great course. Had him last semester. So did my 2 friends. We all liked him. For me he was a God-send: he helped me overcome my stage fright. He also persuaded me to consider Comm. Studies as a major. One point: Read the text and read his Blackboard information. He has a lot to offer us and my next step is to get one of his recommendation letters!
Outstanding. Very passionate, knowledgeable, giving, and considerate of others. I recommend him to everyone. I wish he was teaching more than Com 130 though. I am a Junior transfer and upper class-men would thrive in his classes. He is demanding though. He also wrote me a letter of recommendation and it was perfect. It made me cry tears of joy.
I was so afraid of public speaking and standing in front of anyone. He helped me grow and become competent and not so afraid any more. So far he is the nicest and most helpful teacher I have met at BSU. I want to take other courses with him and I hope they let him teach more than the intro. course. My four friends and I still miss his course.
Very smart man and he knows his stuff. Very helpful to me when my father died. He helped me deal with his death and gave me extra time to complete my assignments. Teaching is a calling to him. My father was just like him. I recommend him to everyone and miss his course.
Very stimulating and provocative. He makes me think. Because of him I may switch majors to Comm. Studies. There is one other Comm. Studies professor I love too. One thing about him: Be willing to work and study. His course is not a high school type course. Honors students thrive with him. I know. I am one of them.
Had Professor Burns three years ago and he just wrote me a GREAT letter of recommendation. I loved his course and could not believe he recalled my speeches from three years ago. I wish he taught more upper level courses too so I could take him again. His letter, his knowledge and insights, and his kindness will never be forgotten. One of the best!
I am very shy and Prof. Burns helped me overcome some of my shyness and fears in this course. I am from the Islands and always thought the mainland people from Mass. were more aggressive than me. Prof. B. told me he was shy by nature too and he always encouraged me and gave me strategies for dealing with my shyness. I wish I could take him again.
When I had Prof. Burns, his class helped my public speaking incredibly. It is amazing at how much I enjoy writing and presenting my research now, and I do more research because of it.
Read the text, show up to class (especially on speaking days), and email the man back when he emails you. And he will email you A LOT. He will change the way you think & the way you communicate. He's just and fair, and if you're a mature student who's willing to do the work, you will do very well with him. He wants you to succeed. Take his class!
I loved Prof. B's course. He is a giving teacher and he will help you if you are confused or afraid. I was both. I feared public speaking and I was confused over this: whether I was college material. Prof. B. guided me and helped me in two other courses. I read every comment here and those who do not like him are immature and do not study.
I'm just finishing with him and found his whole course helpful. He went out of his way to help me gain control over my speech fears. I have many. He also called attention to something a lot of us deny: technology and Facebook addiction. If you are addicted to your cell phone, do not take his class. Other than that, he is a wonderful teacher.
Took his final and did incredible. His Study Guide helped and his last email on "resonance" resonated! Why am I writing? Because his course changed me. His course made me want to learn. His course made me examine my communication skills and my life. His course made me see I am not just a pretty face and sexy figure. I am a woman with a great brain!
2 versions: Mine is the good one. He is focused and masterful in the classroom and allows mature students like me to grow. I get it with him. Get to class on time, follow directions, and be ready to do your work/speeches/tests. He sees communication as essential in life. My roommate's version: He couldn't stand him. He hates BSU and he is immature
Just finished and loved his course. He is very understanding and kind as well as very knowledgeable about his field of communication. His one obsession: students who are addicted to cell phones and technology. If you want to text message friends in his class, do not take him!!!!! I can see now he is right. He is the sincerest guy I have ever met.
My best friend and I took him this past semester and we both said his course was our best at BSU so far. He is very giving as a professor and his insights ALWAYS stimulated me and made me ponder my life as a communicator. My only complaint: He is not teaching upper level courses and that bothers several of us. We want to take other courses with him
I am a foreign student and found him always helpful and kind and respectful. He made me see the importance of my speech and communication skills and helped me to grow as a person. He also wrote me a great letter of recommendation that I will take home with me to my country. I will miss him and Bridgewater State.
Had him last semester & received an A. If you are HIGHLY motivated and mature and ready to work, take him. His course is life transforming. He challenges you on your speech and communication and he teaches communication as a verb. He is profound. He is DEMANDING! He also gives you his articles on speech anxiety. Helped me tremendously. Great guy!
Afraid of speaking and communicating? I would recommend Prof B. He helped me grow beyond my fears and doubts. His CD, "How To Be A Confident Public Speaker! No More Stage Fright!" was my constant help during his course and other speech classes. It has been 3 semesters since I took him and I still use his CD and his "7 Ps of Sp Anxiety Reduction!"
Had him at other college and my cousin told me she had him at BSU. I just came back from Israel and addressed audience at The Avenue of the Righteous Among the Nations, Yad Vashem. Prof B gave me the skills and the intellectual ammunition I needed to touch over 300 American Jews. He taught me to be proud of my heritage, my love of speech, and USA!
I?m a reader and I LOVED Prof B because he is an intellectual and he always went beyond the course by mentioning fascinating books to read. I know he is widely read. Yes, I learned so much about speech and communication, but I also READ! Three books I read that he recommended: Alone Together by Turkle; The Dumbest Generation by Bauerlein; The Spell
My girlfriend told me about this site and I know we were both reading books he recommended. No question: he is an intellectual and not easy. But I loved him. The 2 books I read: The Spellbinders Gift by Mandino; Avoiding Communication: Shyness, Reticence & Comm Apprehension by McCroskey. I'm shy and he helped me! He is the most giving and smart guy
Had Prof B my Senior yr which was several years ago for a course that made my college career, Advanced Interpersonal Conflict Resolution. As a school psychologist I still use his insights from the course. I recommend him-he is intelligent about his field, he is approachable, no matter what the problem, and he calmed my fears. He is a very nice man.
Was really afraid of speaking in public and his Intro Comm course was the answer for my speech fears. My Mom teaches at another university in RI and she told me he is known for his speech anxiety reduction techniques and strategies. I knew she trusted him and respected him and her opinion swayed me to take him. We are very lucky to study with him.
This guy is crazy, but in a good way. He talks in class and actually gets you communicating! He definetly helps you speak in public. There are tests on the book but we never go over the book or material in class... so be prepared to learn on your own!
Prof B goes the extra mile for us. He helped me with a letter of recommendation; helped me on a research project, and guided me to other profs in his Department. He did something else too: he provided us with a Study Guide on all of the text chapters. He also helped me become a public speaker. I gained my voice and overcame my severe stage fright.
Great teacher who will build you up and make you a much better public speaker. Nothing but respect.
Sitting in my room after the break & found this site. I have 2 thoughts on Prof B (1) He inspires with knowledge in speech communication & he helped me overcome my speaking anxiety. (2) He is not teaching upper level courses & several of us are very upset over that. My sister had him for an upper level course 5 yrs ago & LOVED him. Kind & wise!
Professor Burns is willing to help you out whenever you need it as long as you ask. He likes it when you come to him 0o/.,mnnr email him with a question or problem, which is really helpful. His class is not that hard but you wont pass if you dont want to work hard. He is very straight forward and I highly recommend taking his class!
I was sent to Prof Burns by my Department Chair for help in public speaking. I suffer with a phobic reaction to speaking publicly and I am not a Comm. Studies major. My Chair told me he helped several other students. He gave me strategies and his 7 Ps of Speech Anxiety Reduction greatly helped. He worked 4 weeks with me and I am doing MUCH better.
Ha! Professor Burns will always be my favorite of all Bridgew professors. He knows too much of the course and will make you a better speaker by the end of your course. The textbook is rarely used. I found a way around him which is, he loves to be complimented and he loves to talk so if you don't interact in class, forget it!
Prof B is an outstanding public speaking teacher. He had to be with me. I had many fears about speaking and knowing he did too at one time made me feel more comfortable. But there is something else I need to write. One year ago my father died and he came to the wake and funeral. My Mom and I will never forget that. We are very grateful to Prof B.
He is demanding and yet very understanding if you have a problem. I became a Comm Studies major because of him and now have a good job in Boston. My best professors in his Dept were demanding and challenging and treated us as adults. I am happy I started my journey at Bridgewater with him. Two other things-make deadlines & do research.
I just finished with Professor B and I liked him. He kept our class moving and he knows his subject. My Dad had him 19 years ago for Public Speaking, Public Relations, and Intro. to Communication and he liked him too. My Dad still quotes him. His one odd thing is following directions. But I liked him and hope to take other courses with him.
I enjoyed Prof. B's course a lot. I am surprised I am writing this because I was afraid to take this course. I was afraid of speaking in front of others and just speaking to strangers. I received a great deal from his course and did my best with the two speeches. If you are afraid of speaking like I used to be, I would recommend his course.
I'm a transfer student and Professor Burns made me feel welcomed from the first day of his course. I am also afraid of speaking and he helped me overcome my shyness and speech fears. I would recommend him and feel lucky that I had him last year. He is a very nice and smart teacher.
By far one of the best teacher I have had at bsu so far. You really have to attend class to understand the material and assignments but he clarifies everything. He expects you to do research for your speeches but it's easy. He's a great guy, with a kind heart and loves to tell stories! As long as you do the work and pay attention you'll be fine!
SHOW UP TO CLASS. Prof Burns loves to talk. And talk. And Talk! He spends like half the class telling stories about himself in college. Flatter him. He loves that. He's an alright guy. He certainly knows his stuff and after 14 weeks in his classroom, I really have improved with my public speaking. Id take another class with him... if i had to.
I was afraid and he helped me this semester. I feel lucky I had him. I would like to take Prof. B. again. I think he is a very good teacher and a very kind man.
I transferred to BSU and he helped me feel at home. He also wrote me a great letter of recommendation which helped me enter the Education program here. I also feel prepared and relaxed delivering a speech. I still watch his YouTube video on speech anxiety to get ready to speak. He is such an understanding teacher. I would take him again.
he loves himself which can get old but he truly is a good teacher with a good heart. he has many accomplishments and he makes sure you know them all but he worked hard for them. i have improved greatly in speaking and his class made me feel comfortable with all the other classmates
I transferred to BSU as did several others in the class. He made the class comfortable and I made some new friends. Because of his class I am no longer feeling like a stranger and isolated at BSU. I overcame my stage fright and learned how to give a speech. He also wrote me a letter and it helped me get a scholarship. I want to take him again.
I would definitely take him again. His class was the only one that I grew in. He knows how to teach. I looked forward to every class. The class I thought I would hate became my favorite class. He also did something nice for us: He wrote us each a letter at the end of the course about growth and attached a poem that inspired me to learn even more.
Nicest teacher I have had so far. I transferred to Bridgewater and he made me feel welcomed. He taught me how to study and give a good speech. When I got sick he helped me and gave me extra time to do all the assignments. I really loved him. Wish I could take him again.
I loved Prof B's course! I transferred to BSU like a lot of us in his public speaking course did and I am happy an adviser recommended him to me. He is a caring and intelligent teacher. Also, when someone in my family passed away, Prof B helped me. He gave me his empathy and wisdom. We are lucky we had him for public speaking. I respect him.
Public Speaking with Robert Burns was my best experience at Bridgewater so far. I really grew. I highly recommend taking it with him. He gave so much to us and I will never forget his course. Just a GREAT experience.
I am taking Prof B right now and it is my favorite course of the semester. I never expected to write that because I am afraid of speaking. But I love speaking now expect to get a very high grade. A former professor and my adviser recommended him and it was the best advice I was given this semester. I would take him again.
He has made my Public Speaking class easy, fun, and interesting. He has a way of motivating me and once I am motivated, it all becomes easy. I have him for a late afternoon class and it is a smaller class which makes me less nervous. He is the kindest and most understanding teacher I have ever had. I will miss him and this class very much.
I tried public speaking at my old school. The teacher hated the course & made us all feel afraid. I dropped it. I transferred to BSU & I tried it again last year & the teacher was disorganized. I think he wanted us to like him. I dropped it. I just finished with Prof B & I loved it! I am no longer afraid & will receive a high grade. Take Prof B.
He always told us, make your messages matter. I did that in our course and became a public speaker and better overall communicator. I would take him every semester if I could. As a Criminal Justice major he taught me how to do better research and how to interpret the Uniform Crime Report of the FBI. I would only take it with him. Great course!
Now that I just graduated I put him in my top 3 professors at Bridgewater. And, it is the one course that I knew I grew in. I grew with each speech assignment and I also grew as a person. He inspired each of us to grow and he made us feel comfortable. I just wish I had not waited to my Senior year to take him! Hands down my experience at BSU.
As someone else wrote here, I wish I had not waited until my Senior year to take Prof B. I took him for a late afternoon class & the small class size made me less afraid & much more relaxed. It was a very good course & a lot of fun too. I will miss him, our great class, & BSU. You'll be lucky to get into any of his classes. I was very lucky.
I LOVED his course! He let us speak on topics in our majors which helped me greatly in my Science courses. He also calmed my nerves, taught me how to improve my studying, and wrote me an awesome letter of recommendation. His letter has opened doors for me in getting a job. He is just a wonderful teacher and I loved being in his course.
Professor B is the best professor I've ever had. When I took this class, I was terrified. I hated the idea of public speaking, but he is very understanding and caring. He wants you to do well and is more than willing to help. I highly recommend you take his class. I wish I could take it again!!
I'm finishing up with Prof. B. now and loved the course. I know I have grown and I am very grateful to him. I no longer have severe stage fright. He has a way of making me achieve and I loved him. He also will be writing me a letter of recommendation and I want to be a teacher like him.
I would recommend Prof B to everyone but especially transfer students like me. When I arrived at BSU I felt alone and not part of the campus. I made friends in his class and felt at home for the 1st time. He brings people together and makes us feel comfortable. I am a Com Studies major because of him and now can put a speech together. I miss him.
Prof B was fantastic! Always willing to give advice and feedback, and makes you work for your grade. Participation counts, it's how he knows you're paying attention. Always read and respond to his emails, it'll help you in the long run. Plays favorites so make sure you're one of them.
I signed up for another prof and my roommate convinced me to take Prof B. I'm so happy she did. It was my favorite course last semester. I LOVED him! He helped me overcome my stage fright and gave me one of his articles on the subject too. He also inspired me to achieve and kept me going when I was discouraged in my other courses. He really cares!
Professor Burns has been my favorite professor thus far. Prob the smartest man I've ever met and also has a genuine interest in his students. YOU MUST RESPOND TO HIS EMAILS. Even if its just a "Hello Prof B. I received your email, thank you for taking the time to send it to me." If you don't he finds it disrespectful. Overall he is a great teacher!
Professor Burns is an incredible professor. He wants nothing more than for his students to succeed. If you are nervous about taking a public speaking course, he is the one to take it with. Definitely take him!! I promise that you will not be disappointed.
My best teacher so far! I cannot believe I loved his course because I dreaded taking it, but now that I am finishing I can honestly say it is the one class I grew in. I was afraid of taking it, but learned so much and gained my voice and I can put an effective speech together. He made us feel comfortable. I wish I could take him every semester.
Great Professor! Great course! Great experience! I transferred as a Junior and just finished with him. It was my BEST college course so far. If you are a transfer student or an upperclassman putting off this course, take it with Prof. B. I learned a lot, overcame my stage fright, and finally met people and felt at home at BSU. I liked him the best!
I would only take Prof B for Public Speaking. He is an expert on stage fright and he helped me overcome mine. He wrote a letter of recommendation and called me an object lesson in growth. He was right! I grew in his class by leaps and bounds. He is the nicest and most knowledgeable prof I had last year. Taking him was my best decision last year.
Prof B is THE best! I learned so much about public speaking and also learned how to control my speech anxiety and overcome it. I have never seen a course before where we always looked forward to it. It was an incredible experience. If you dread taking it, take it with Prof B. If you are looking forward to it, there is no other! AWESOME!
He is a really tough teacher, but teaches what you really need to know. He does not let you slack off in this course, has a high standard but lets you know what he's expecting from you in each assignment and has examples from previous students. Helps you with sources for the assignments if needed. If you want to slack off, don't take his class
He is GREAT! I had him at URI for Public Speaking and Fundamentals of Communication and he was outstanding. My sister now has him at Bridgewater and she loves him too. My Mother is an attorney and worked with him for 2 years on her public speaking and communication. He has touched my whole family. He is a great teacher. I wish he stayed at URI.
I am an NFL player and have worked with the professor off and on for several years. He is meticulous in his prep and knows how to reduce my stage fright. He keeps me focused for each speech. He is a great coach. My friends daughter is taking him and he is helping her overcome her shyness. She is feeling comfortable and loves his class. Just GREAT
I am taking Prof B for his 3:25 class in the afternoon and it is the only class I look forward to. I feel much better about public speaking and I can "frame" a speech. I am learning and growing and I think he is an amazing teacher. I would recommend him to anyone but especially to people like me who are shy. He has made my whole semester better.
I transferred to BSU and was told by a Communications professor to take Prof. Burns because I suffer with stage fright. His public speaking course has changed my life. I am for the first time feeling good about public speaking and I am even speaking in other courses. I was very lucky to get into his course. BSU is now my home because of Prof B.
Professor Burns expects a lot of his students so if you aren't committed don't take his class. If you are nervous about public speaking and really want to improve Professor Burns will really be helpful. He really cares about his students and wants you to do well.
I transferred to BSU and became a Communication Studies major because of Professor Burns. He decreased my stage fright, gave me competence framing my messages, helped me to do better research, and inspired me to achieve success. I know he overcame a stuttering problem too. Oh, he LOVES the movie, The King's Speech. I loved him.
I transferred to Bridgewater and dropped out of public speaking at another university. I was told by two other students that he could help me overcome my stage fright. He did! His course is now my favorite at BSU and I would recommend him to anyone! He is kind, understanding, and professional. So far his course is my best experience at a college.
Great Professor!! He makes you work, don't expect to slide through his class. If are nervous of public speaking then take him! He will help you!! READING is key to an A in his class. Inspirational but overall so nice!
I'm finishing up with him now. He really cares about us and helps us. I transferred and dreaded this course in my previous university and refused to take it. With Professor Burns I am growing. I am overcoming my stage fright and learning how to form a public speech. His course is the one I look forward to every week. If you are afraid, take him.
Professor B helped me overcome my fears of public speaking and just wrote me an amazing letter of recommendation. I am also becoming a teacher and I want to run my classrooms like he does. He really inspires me to grow and be my best I look forward to his course every week. I am so lucky I got into his course. I will miss him.
I wish I did not wait till my senior year to take him. I put off this course and yet I am taking him now and it is my best experience at Bridgewater State. He prepared me for my "elevator speech" for a job interview and helped me overcome my speech anxiety. I feel confident in his course and I have peace too. I have grown because of Professor Burns
Burn's may be a bit quirky and a little odd, but he's a saint. He really cares and loves his students, and the dude wants everyone to do well and find their voice. You won't regret taking this class.
Robert Burns is a very sweet guy and cares very much for his students' progress. I wish I could have him for the rest of my college career. At first he seems kinda weird, but around halfway through the semester I really started to understand his teaching techniques and I began to really love him. He's a great guy and will help to improve so much
I transferred to BSU and just graduated and the professor made my time at BSU the BEST experience of my 4 years of college. If you transferred like I did, take him. You will get to know others and feel safe in his classroom. If you have stage fright like I did, take him. He is an expert on speech anxiety reduction. My best senior year experience!
Ive always been a shy woman but blossomed in his class. He helped me overcome my shyness, my stage fright, and my lack of public speaking skills. He also taught my sister and she loved him too. I wish I could have him every semester at Bridgewater. He inspired me to do my best in every subject. I already miss him!
Professor Burns is hands down the most incredible professor I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. So inspirational and caring of each and every student. He makes you work for your grade, but it is so worth it. This class changed my outlook on life.
Disliked him at first then he really grew on me. He cares so much for his students and it's really refreshing. He does rant about himself a lot and it can get really annoying but keep an open mind if you have him.
I transferred to BSU and Prof. B welcomed me and made me feel at home. He also wrote me THE BEST letter of recommendation and I just found out today I got the job. I learned how to put a speech together and not be afraid any more. Public speaking is required for my new job and I am confident because of his course. He changed my life. Love him!
At first this course made me afraid. Prof B suffered with stage fright and yet here he was now teaching us. What did he do to grow? So I listened to this giving prof and grew! I even entered the Public Speaking Competition he directed for the entire university. I cannot believe I am writing this but his class was my best BSU experience. Take him!
I was feeling overwhelmed and a man held the door open and I started crying. He: Can I help you? I sat for 1 hr telling him my feelings and questioning if I could do BSU. I even told him I was afraid of public speaking. He told me he had many of the same feelings. He: Take me for Public Speaking. I did and received an A. Now I do it in my job!
would only recommend if you actually want to get better at public speaking if not don't take
I took Prof B as a Senior and it was a great way to end my 4 years at BSU! He calmed my fears, taught us how public speaking makes us marketable, taught us how to answer the Elevator Speech interview question, and also wrote me an awesome letter of recommendation. I rate him in my top 3 professors at Bridgewater. I wish now I had taken him sooner!
After several years at BSU he is definitely my favorite professor. I dreaded taking public speaking but he teaches us to have a growth-mindset, understand and overcome stage fright, and put together a professional speech. He also wrote me a letter of recommendation and helped me secure a job. Part of my job will include public speaking. I loved him
Professor Burns is my favorite professor. Like most people I dreaded public speaking and it turned into my favorite class. Over a year later I go to visit him and he remembers everything about you and your speeches. Awesome guy who really makes you see your potential. I wish he taught more courses at BSU.
I'm a Junior transfer and was lucky to get into his course. He makes you feel like you can do it and he teachers you how to achieve. My stage fright is gone and I know how to reach an audience. My roommate has him and she loves him too. I can't believe I am writing this but public speaking is the only class I look forward to. I would only take him!
I am a freshman finishing my first semester at BSU and I LOVE his course! He brings us together, makes us feel comfortable, and teaches us with care and knowledge. My Mother is a teacher too and she told me his methods empowers students to grow. I am no longer afraid of public speaking and I have made a friend for life, Prof. B. Our class is great!
Professor Burns can be intimidating but he will absolutely change your life. He wants to challenge you more than any other professor at BSU will. If you give this class all of your effort, he will appreciate it and your grade will reflect it. He really gets to know his students and cares about your success more than anyone else.
If he likes you, as in you try and grow throughout the course, A. No real homework. Four speeches with a few group projects in between. Passionate about subject. Will remember you and doesnt want you to fail. If you dont try he will notice. You get 3 cuts. Favorite class and you learn so much outside of public speaking also. Can be weird/funny.
I went into Professors Burns class a TERRIBLE public speaker, but left with more confidence than I would've ever thought. He helps you through things and really cares about how you grow throughout his class. He can be a little quirky, but you will really learn so much. As long as you follow the templates that he gives you, you will do great!
I attend uri where he teaches classes at the request of our department head. When I entered the class I was a worse person. Not my communications skills but the person I was. I thought communication was all about being able to lie to get what you want and never showing anyone your ethics. Prof. Burns changed my mind and got me to change myself
Just graduated and wanted to thank him. I stayed at BSU because of him and his study tips helped me achieve in all my classes. I not only overcame my fears, but I accomplished something. I can deliver a successful speech and my communication skills have improved. I was just hired for a new job in Boston because of my public speaking skills! Thanks
I was a bit intimidated by Burns at first because of his high credentials, but if you put your best effort forward, you should receive an A. He is the hardest working and most dedicated professor Ive ever had, by far. Prof. Burns changed the way I communicate and can not thank him enough. Take him if you need to change the way you spend to others.

My best experience at BSU! He's challenging but he's fair. I heard of him from my parents who both worked with him. My Dad as an attorney and my Mom as a teacher. They praised him for his speech anxiety reduction techniques which I use in my job too. His final exam speech prepared me for a "public speaking interview!" He's a superior teacher!!!
Prof. Burns is phenomenal. He cares so much about all of his students, and truly wants you to succeed. You have lots of speeches, but you grow throughout the class. Even if you have a fear of public speaking, he makes it so easy. He prepares you for so much inside and outside of the class. He always stays after and helps and gives great feedback!
