Gives about one homework assignment a week. Tests are hard... but the problems are similar to those on homework. Is a very clear lecturer and is easy to follow in class. Dont expect review sheets or curves from him though

very easy course, sometimes not very clear about course goals.
He is better than most of his department. Book is terrible, but understandable and interesting lectures.
How you can't get a decent grade in on of his classes I will never know.
The only homework required are take home quizes. If you have friends who have taken him before get the quizes and tests. The numbers change but the problems are almost exactly the same as previous semesters.
Just copy your quizzes onto your notesheet and a guaranteed B.

Great Prof. Tests are exactly like homework and quizzes. Tests are long, but very clear and concise. Everything you have seen before, no surprises. The bad ratings must be from morons! He's good. He is a nice guy, too. Very understanding.
Great professor, I LOVE the Math Dept. at UWP!!!
He is a very good teacher. Explanations are very clear and concise. He is a Genius.
I had some trouble w/ him regarding some explainations of some of the harder concepts but he passes me anyway. So I can't really kick about his style.
I had a bunch of trouble on his exams. Never really explained to me what I did wrong. He is very good at the simple stuff though is more vauge in details.
One word: genius. He knows his material & teaches it very well. Take home quizzes are difficult, but managable. He makes you WORK for your grade so there is no slacking off. Don't learn the hard way. Tests are long and difficult. I would highly recommend him if you are up for a challenge.
Knows his stuff. Can give tuff exams. Will always help you after class. Incredible mind. Remembers my name after six years.
Everyting went smoothly. Easy exasms and he will inflate your grade if you whine a little just to keep admin off his back.
Was a bit confused by his lectures but he was very helpful to me during my office visits.

gotta love the combover.. wonder the last time he got a professional haircut?? anyway, his tests are virtually exactly like the quizzes, so if you can comprehend those, you've got it made. very unwilling to curve whatsoever, so your average has to be what the syllabus has for the grade. odd man too.
Not exactly into interaction with his students, but if you can follow his examples and do his quizzes you can get a B in the class for sure. Nice enough guy, but definitely very idiosyncratic.
I don't understand why he gets such a bad rep! If you understand the take home quizzes, you'll do fine on the tests! Hes extremely helpful in class and thoroughly explains everything he does. Plus, the hair is great for laughs!
Probably the best math prof I've ever had. Explains everything VERY well in lecture. Gives take-home quizzes, which the exams are based on. If you understand the quizzes you should be fine for the exam, but be prepared to work your butt off on the exams, the last one took me 3.5 hours to do.
This guy needs hair. Next he needs a live. Crazy man, do not take his class if you want to relax a little.
Very good teacher, very clear and straight to the point. Take hime quizzes are nice and are identical to the exams! I would recommend him.
everyone seems to like him or hate him, but if you can do a take home quiz i dont see why you wouldnt like him. the exams are similar to the quizzes and he gives you as long as you want to finish them. someone needs to buy him a toupet though.
Scary smart. Has the voice of a sex predator though. Easy to stay awake. You WILL learn math with this man. He's like a Clem Jeske that talks faster.
awesome lectures, explains everything in steps which makes everything clear...take home quizzes, about one a week..if you can handle those problems, you will do fine on the tests...strongly recommend this prof..math isnt my thing and i dont mind going to class at all
Wouldn't suggest if you're not a math major. He does a good job of teaching the material, but sometimes expects us to understand hard concepts immediately (probably because he is literally a genious). Sometimes makes people feel stupid for asking a question. Tests are hard and really long (usually 2-3 hrs) and after them your head hurts.
Yes, his tests are just like his take home quizzes, but when half the class fails a take home quiz with a week to work on it, it's too hard.
he did alot of example problems
made calc 2 make sense, if u take him you better be ready to work hard but youll learn the material really well and actually remember some of it a yr or 2 later
Great teacher. He made sense of everything. Always available for extra help and office hours. Odd sense of humor but it mad the class fun. Take home quizzes and related problems on the exams. Final is department and calculator is not used.
Strict and straightfoward. Hes good at lecturing, but things are very concreete in grading. Somewhat condecending when asking for help.
More in depth on the subject than needed.
Calculus makes a lot more sense now. Lectures are clear and focused, the homework he assigns really helps prepare for tests, and he is always very straightforward. He'll challenge you but he'll never screw you over.
Very helpful and clear in teaching. Pretty tough at grading. Friendly guy!
Picky grader but what do you expect in Calculus. Very helpful and beneficial quizzes each week that count for 1/9 of your final grade. 4 tests, all decent if you know quizzes well. HE IS THE MOST WILLING TO HELP OF ANY TEACHER I'VE HAD!!! Will never cheat you out of points, but will punish for silly mistakes. You'll learn tons! Enjoyable class.
I LOVE CALCATERRA. calc is in his name. he is math god. taking him next semester for calc 3. hard grader but excellent teacher. helped me any time i need it. homework and tests back within 2 days, amazing! learns names within 2-3 weeks from just passing back papers! LONG HARD TESTS, at least 2-3 hrs.
Very good professor. Take lots of notes and you can do the take-home quizzes. Do the quizzes and you can do the tests, and study the tests and you'll do fine on the final. Very structured and predictable. No curve-balls. Very nice guy, even if he IS a little intense.
The best math professor at this school! Gives many examples in class and will ask if there are any questions after examples. Gives weekly homework that prepare you for the test. Tests can be long if you didnt do the homework since the tests are the homework themselves. He is a tough grader. In his office a lot and will help you with your questions
Do the homework in the class and you will get and easy A. He will help you with any questions you might have. he is a tough grader but you will learn more from him than any of the other professors. Take him if you want an A!
You must do your homework every day to pass, this is true of any calc course though. He is very good, but tough also. One of the better profs.
He knows what he's talking about and is very clear and precise in his lectures. Homework follows examples in class and exams follow homework. Very straight-forward. Calc 2 and 3 are pretty tough as it is but he makes things pretty easy to understand. Very willing to help outside of class during his office hours. Take him! Enjoyable to be around!
Took him for calc1 and made a seemingly scary subject fun. He was easy to understand and very helpful during office hours and very nice to chat with in addition. homework follows examples done in class and tests follow homework...very straight forward class. It's a rigorous class but with attendance and a bit of hard work, it was actually enjoyable
Great prof. He's been teaching his classes for a while so they're organized well. Clear examples in class, homework has similar problems, and tests match homework. no reason not to do well if you go to class and do the hw and get your questions answered. also very friendly, though he does talk fast sometimes and kinda mumble occasionally.
Awesome guy! Had for calc 3. He's really easy to talk to during office hours. Class is very straightforward, notes are easy to copy, homework based on notes, tests based on homework. Not the easiest professor, but knows what he's doing and works you hard. Study home works 3-4 times over and there aren't any surprises. Would take again.
awesome teacher, definitely improved over the years, you can tell from ratings. super smart guy and very good at explaining stuff. class, homework and test problems are all similar, definitely recommend this guy. very personable and easy to talk to during office hours and getting to know him definitely affects how he grades.
Decent teacher, but makes you do much harder things for homework and tests than taught in class. Even though homework is due once a week, expect to spend at least 1/2-1 hr per problem on many of them.
Terrible at explaining concepts. Also don't ask him any questions, he makes you feel dumb and almost becomes hostile. Will avoid for all future classes.
Made the course real easy. Almost all of his exam questions are based off of the homework. Wish I would have taken him for Calc 1&2.
You get take-home quizzes thats due about every 2 weeks. Test questions are very, very similar to quiz questions so theres no reason not to be prepared for the test. Everything on test was either in notes or on quiz, usually the quiz. Great personality, excellent at deriving concepts, always asks if theres ?s. Not best professor but he is very good
Hello, the average grade should have been an A- and not a C+ for the post that put up this morning. I'm not quite sure why/how it got switched up. Thanks for making the change, it is appreciated
Dr. Calcaterra is hands down one of the best professors I've have. For Math, easily the best. He explains the material in a way that cuts out all of the stuff students/engineers don't necessarily need to know, and instead imparts knowledge that is characteristic to what is needed in the future. Very nice, good sense of humor, good guy.
Alright listen, As you peruse this page, read this post - it's all you need. This man is a God at calculus, and will steer you in the right path to be as well. He makes you work, but the rewarding feeling of acing a 3 hour test on calc 3 is a fantastic feeling. Take this guy.
Best Calc teacher you will ever have. Great guy, TONS of examples, easy to understand, went to his office hours without any fear. Even showed up to his office when he didn't have designated hours and he was more than happy to help. Hands down favorite teacher at UWP. Wish he taught all my classes! Don't miss his class unless you have to
Great professor! He's super smart and very good at teaching the material. His quizzes relate directly to the homework, and his tests relate directly to the quizzes. He was extremely helpful during office hours, I visited him 3 to 4 times a week for help. If you study and do the homework, you will do very well. Would definitely take him again!
I love him. He was very good at relating what we learned to what a practical use might be. Very approachable and easy to talk to.
His tests are exactly like the take home quizzes that he assigns so if you want a good grade in his class understand the quizzes and you will be golden. Extremely helpful and comical in his office hours. He WANTS YOU TO PASS WITH A HIGH GRADE AND WILL HELP ANY STUDENT WHO WITH NO PROBLEMS. the only problem is that i cant take him next semster
Great teacher! His office hours were great and he was always willing to help. Only complaint would be the amount of homework, expect to spend your weekends and free time doing the homework to finish in time.
Wish I would have taken him earlier in my math string. He was great. Answered any questions during lecture and always willing to help during office hours and often outside of hours. The homework load was rough but if you understood it the 3 hour exams were cake. Show up to class, ask questions, do the homework and you will come out in good shape.
Robert is a kind person that is available to answer any questions and assist with any homework in and out of his office hours. His lectures are very straight-forward but his lectures seem to be an opportunity to show students how great he is at math, instead of instructing his students. He is VERY picking on his grading and gives no partial credit.
This has to be the most ridiculous class I've ever taken. He just blows through things and doesn't explain them. Calc 2 isn't easy but he makes it so much harder
If you need help on the homework, and you probably will, go in and ask. He is very helpful and willing to answer any questions, even if they aren't directly related to the homework. He wants you to succeed. I went from a D- to a C+ because I asked for help. He also treats his students as friends. Definitely glad to get into his calc 2 next semeste.
While he tried to make it seem like he was open to help with homework, he had a bad habit of leaving his office hours early and not helping very much when he was there. His tests are barely related to the homework, and his grading style makes it nearly impossible to pass. Additionally, he has bad vision, so he will deduct all points if "unclear".
Most amazing professor I have ever had. I have already had him for Calc I and I think that is why I am doing so well in Calc II. If you go and see him in his office, he is always super helpful and willing to help even outside of his office hours. If only he was teaching Calc III next semester. TAKE HIM! HE'S AMAZING!
Gives extremely poorly written homework that is tough to understand what is even being asked. All of his questions are written on his own, and many don't seem to even relate to the book. His lectures cover the material well, but the homework and exams are written to be so difficult that it is nearly impossible to pass.
Best math professor I have ever taken. Always available for help and great at answering questions if you have shown you have at least tried to solve it. Exams are based off his homework so if you study those you'll do great. Homework is based off problems in class, so take good notes and always go to class. If you need more, I got an A- in Calc2.
Gives a lot of in class examples. The homework is very similar to the exams, so if you don't do the homeworks, you most likely won't do good. Go and see him in his office regularly, and even if your not doing super good, and he sees you try, he'll pass you.
A ton of people love him; however, I didn't like him that much. It may just be his teaching style, but I did not have any luck in his class. You can't use the book because he teaches it much differently, so there are limited examples. In office hours, he just made me feel unwelcome. Wish I could get more examples instead of just a few.
Currently the worst math professor at platteville. Doesn't clearly explain topics, mutters quietly to himself instead of annunciating, and doesn't understand how to grade. He's rude, dismissive, and doesn't care about student success in the least. I've never had a worse professor before. Maybe he can teach calculus, but he cannot teach stats.
His name is calcaterra he takes calc seriously. He is a good guy and does his best teaching a very difficult subject. Tests are based on the given review sheet and homework on the lectures. Go to every lecture do the homework and study for the exams. Its a hard subject but you will do fine with him. Overall one of my favorites
Horrible teacher, works incredibly fast and does not help. Does not use d2l so you never know your grade.
His class is hard, but there's no surprises, If its on the test, you probably haven't seen it before. I took him for Calc2 and 3 And was in his office hours constantly. I worked hard to pass but he was very patient and helpful.
I took Rob for my 2nd try at Calc2 and he offered a new perspective on concepts which made it interesting. Hes not a talented speaker (so study outside of class) and he doesnt use D2L (but is happy to tell you your grade if you ask.) Tests have the same material which is on the homework, but both are graded pretty harshly. A real nice guy tho.
He explains the concepts very well instead of just throwing things up on a chalkboard. He constantly asks if anyone has any questions during various parts of the lecture. He was easily accessable out of class as well. The exams are very similar to the review, with just numbers changed around. Definitely would recommend!
Explains concepts very well and always makes sure everyone understands during lecture. Relates to real world examples during lecture. Assigns weekly HW. Does grade a bit tough. Gives a review sheet for exams that is long but very relevant to the exam. Exams are very long (2-3 hours). Very straight forward with what he expects out of you.
A human calculator, he is a god among men.
Dr. Calcaterra was a little intimidating at first. Once you get a feel for his personality it is tough to find more supportive professors on any campus.
Everything on paper. Can only see grades if you go and ask him. Not great at public speaking. Very tough grader. Small mistakes take off the majority of the problems even if you did it correctly. Textbook is useless, 80% of his problems do not resemble the questions in the book. If you skip you probably won't pass.
No Textbook Needed. Talks fast, explains good but not great, frequently asks if anyone has questions, a little hard of hearing, nice guy, very knowledgeable, helps if you go to office hours, short homeworks (10 problems), Exams very similar to homework (12 problems), gives relevant and useful optional reviews for exams which help, overall good prof
One of the best professors here. He seems intimidating at first, but very supportive and helpful once you get to know him. Always asks if anyone has questions and willing to go over things as many times as you need. If you understand the homework, you'll do good on exams. Take him!
Don't know if I got the course number correct, but Prof. Calcaterra is a very understanding and communicable professor. While not the most tech savvy, he is willing to make adjustments and provide methods of accessibility for a student who at least has the motivation to try in his courses.
He is the greatest. I once had a question a day before the exam, but I couldn't make it to office hours. He literally met with me on his own time. At first, he seemed a bit intimidating, but once you get to know him, he is super nice. His cat Reggie likes to make appearances during our zoom lectures, so that's a bonus. I would take him again.
Genuinely wants his students to do well. I definitely recommend going to office hours and to do the practice problems before exams. In office hours he works through problems slower and does a great job explaining how to approach them. Exams are graded pretty harshly but typically align closely with in class examples and homework. Solid choice.
Dr. Calcaterra knows his stuff. His teaching is just lecturing but he gives quizzes as homework and is always available to help. We had weekly tests which was nice due to how much content is covered in the class. The tests and final were not cumulative. This was the third class I had with him.
Calc 2 is obviously a tough class with tough material, but he breaks it down alright. Gives lots of examples and makes sure students can follow along for the most part. Class is very test heavy but tests are typically straight forward. Homework load is a lot but expected when you take calc 2. Sometimes can get mumbly and hard to understand.
His class was impossible to pass, he grades with an either "you get it or you don't" attitude. If you get a problem wrong, he doesn't give you points for half credit, he only docks you points when you mess up. He is test heavy so if you are a terrible test taker, don't take class with him.
Robert is about as good as it gets when it comes to high-level math profs. Instead of having a few very dense and difficult exams throughout the semester, he tests you every other week on your knowledge of the material. Although he may be a harsh grader on tests/homework, the tests are very similar to what he gives on his review sheets. Easy B
Dr Calcaterra was a great Calc II professor, he had biweekly exams, so they weren't too long or weighted huge. He gave study guides for all of the exams, with an answer key, which were a perfect indication of what was on the exam, if you can do the review without notes, you can do the exam.
My favorite math professor. He teaches with lots examples which looks like the homework, tests, and exam. He's a great person too that is happy to help, but he is blunt so be prepared.
Best math teacher I ever had. This man is a legend. Reviews are very similar to tests.
Genuinely seems to care about his students passing the class and seemed very knowledgeable about the topics. Gives out a lot of mandatory homework, but he returns it quickly and with good feedback.
The best teacher for calc 2 by far. He explains things in a way that make sense, and isn't just one of those "memorize these equations" teachers. His class is super lecture and homework heavy, and he is a harsh grader, but he grades on the work leading up to the problem, not necessarily the answer.
very good professor, hard grader but his teaching is worth the hard grading.
Dr. Calcaterra literally got hit by a student on a bike and still showed up and taught class, that is how dedicated he is. He is incredibly knowledgable and very helpful during office hours. He posts reviews for each exam which are very similar to the exams themselves. Highly, highly recommend.
Best Calc II and Calc III professor at UWP. He knows what he is doing, is great during office hours, and has a great way of teaching. Easy take-home quizzes 1-2 times per week, 5-8 question tests every other Friday, and a final. Reviews are very similar to the tests. By far my favorite professor.
I love the way Calcaterra teaches. It made calc 1 pretty easy to understand. Whenever someone did question, he would teach it in a different way so they could try to better understand. Highly recommend him!
I don't know how he is rated so high. If you do not have a lot of prior knowledge about calc you are cooked. Moves quickly through topics so you can easily miss a vital part of solving problems. He has partial deafness, blindness, and is dyslexic as well. Mumbles during lectures and doesn't understand questions. Good luck if you choose to take him.
I did not have a good experience. His classes were paced very quickly. He is hard of hearing and also mumbles badly. He can be very hard to understand. Exams are every other week with homework assignments twice a week, which gets very stressful when trying to balance with other classes. Was very rude during office hours, ignoring me while speaking.
A dedicated professor who makes the complex concepts of Calc2 understandable. Homework and exams are well-aligned, and Unstuck study is a great study aid. Attend class, use the free textbook, and you'll do well.
Clear when teaching and blackboard allows you time to take notes. Don't be scared to ask questions. Sit closer to the front and pay attention in class and you'll learn. He also posts the daily notes and reviews that greatly help when preparing for tests or doing homework.
Taking College Algebra with him seemed like a never-ending cycle of getting too many points revoked for a tiny mistake. He also only posts test grades until end of semester, when he combines all your quiz grades manually into a score out of 80 pts. I had to calculate grades myself in order to know I would've had an F if I didn't drop when I did.
Exams were a nightmare; he would hand you blank printer paper and another paper. The second was cut to 1/3 length and had the test questions. His lecture was just working out problems on a blackboard. Fast-moving and talking, and didn't give much of an explanation of what was going on or how he got to the answer. He LOVED to mark all things wrong.
