He really doesn't like our textbook, don't buy it before taking his class, he might say not too, he likes using internet apps., creates his own way of teaching the course, very different from other teachers on campus, he will make you learn calc. AAAAH!!!

His classes are quite challenging, and I have spent many hours on doing homework. However, if you spend the time initially, you will not have problems on the tests...Very clear & helpful - one of my best teachers, ever!
different method of teaching calc... very conceptual, he teaches strategies to use, not just formulas to memorize.
perfect way of teachin calculus. doesn't rely on the textbook yet makes everything crystal clear. will give u 4 or 5 homework assignments which can be done in groups. tests r really easy if u've paid attention during class. loves football and likes to talk abt other things too :)
a very helpful teacher. He is the only calculus teacher who can make concepts clear to u. no homework, only tests are given, and good poitn is that he gives away his own notes, and he doesnt go by the book. i will recommend him to anyone hwo wants to take calculus sequence.
Great professor, very helpful, and clear. His test and homework are time consuming, but not impossible. He is one of the best.
Lots of visual examples. Can simplify things well. Really passionate about his job with kind of a relaxed attitude.
The best teacher i've met in COD...his teaching is amazing and very interesting..you can learn a lot from him...Exam is similar or little more challenging than problems he goes over in class..Robert is very funny..He wants to make sure his students learn something everyday..Take a class with him....
Very passionate in teaching.. one day, I was having so much troulbe with hw. i waited him infront of the office. He left a note that he will be in a class room helping other students, but i didn't see that. when he came to his office, it was time for him to go home. But, he stayed as long as I needed him(over 45 min). What a Great teacher!
Nice teacher. No text book required. Makes everything clear that u will remember in u r future. Hard handouts. BU twait He will help to figure out. This will make calculus an easy course
You have to bring your A game to this class every week. This instructor really challenges his students. This class moves very fast and he...well...talks fast. The homework is long and painful for a class that meeks once a week. He does devote time to help students with home work and catch up with the rest of the class.
Got a jump start with a full semester of Calculus in one quarter during the semester to quarter conversion. Writes his own homework problems. Tests are rewritten, selected homework problems. Book recommended for reference but not required. Took our 4 hour long Tu and Th class to the cafeteria for 2 hours every day. Smokers will like the breaks. :)
EXCELLENT EXCELLENT teacher! You will learn a LOT from him as long as you go to class and take the work seriously. It seems like a lot of work, but it makes the class VERY doable if you do the work. Very clear lecturer and VERY knowledgeable! Definitely take his class for whatever subject you may be taking!
very hard class, but he will make sure you do your best. he will stay until midnight on test days if he has to.
He is a great teacher because he challenges the students. It is not a class that you can skip, but the lectures are worth attending because he is a very clear speaker. Also, he is always willing to help with homework questions if you have problems. This is not an easy class, but he was one of the best professors I have had at COD.

I took Business Calc with Bob and he is awesome!! He is the best math teacher I have ever taken at COD so far. The class is hard is hell but he makes it so clear and understanble. I passed the class with a B although when i registered for this class I kept thinking to myself that all I want is a C and over with it. I love this professor
Man! Cappetta is An Awesome Teacher But Very Hard Tests. If you want to take an A then forget it and if you want to UNDERSTAND, DRINK, THINK, Calculus then he is the ONE for YOU.
Capetta is excellent! His homework problems and exams are difficult, but if you really want to learn the material and understand it conceptually, you'll love his teaching style.
Cappetta is amazing! By far the most helpful and caring teacher at C.O.D. I would recommed him to anyone! A lot of work, but tests are exactly like the homework. Very Fair!! Awesome teacher!
Bob is an excellent teacher. Loves his subject, and his enthusiasm rubs off on his students as well. He moves quickly, but he'll spend as much time as needed to explain concepts if you interrupt him and ask. If you want to understand Math conceptually, instead of just mechanically doing exercises, he's the professor for you. Be prepared to work!
AMAZING PROFESSOR.Homework requires alot of effort and tests need 110%of your time and effort. Moves pretty fast but will work with you to explain. If you study with a group and seek help from him you get some kudos to your name.Takes personal interest in his students and their goals. Would take again in a heart beat. His Pizza is amazing! Bob Rocks!
Great proffesor need to do homework and pay attention in class. Tends not to use the book will give out packets of math problems to be worked on over a 2 week period. Will learn everything from lecture show up to class! Make sure to turn in homework and do it completely helps a great deal to work with peeps from class.

One of the two best math teachers at COD. His enthusiasm for the material is contagious. He explains with clarity that comes from deep understanding. Tests aren't strictly hard, but VERY thorough and involved, so you really need to keep up with the material. His is a very relaxed and fun classroom environment.
I took his pm class and he often stayed close to midnight to help. His course is rough so we stayed until 2 or 3 am studying. However, his grading scale is awful. Bob often says that grades don't matter. But when you take him and get a C but deserve B, it hurts GPA. I had to lie to get into UIUC since I also flunked out of Purdue. Africh is better.
Bob is the best teacher I've probably ever had. I've had easy classes with automatic A's, but not this one. I actually understand stats because of him and if I had another teacher I bet I wouldn't get it. I would take him again in a heartbeat. Just go to class, do your hw, and you will at least pass. Not sure if I got an A or B yet but learned ALOT
This guy goes through material too fast and doesnt talk that loud. you can stay after class if you want but still who wants to do that. he does make sure you understand the information because he wants you to come after class. everyone in the class has to go in for extra because he cant teach it to you when in class. i would not take this clas
Bob is a nice guy. Bob says not to worry about grades but then gives rotten grades to most. I just don't think Bob gets it that the courses are intro and so he needs to spend time during class, not after class, to explain the material clearly and concisely. I know he has lost lots of weight. I am proud of him. But have pity on us and our grades.
Bob was a nice guy, willing to help and generally very fair. He tried to grade on a curve but generally his tests and homework were difficult. In some cases you could find the homework problems on the internet. Bottomline, show interest in the class, get extra help and you get a good grade.
Very good teacher. The course is challenging, but as long as you keep up with the homework, the tests are not that bad. His test usually follow the homework exactly. Ask questions and go to class. I just finished the summer course and he goes quick, but I would recommend him and this course if you are looking to get your credits out of the way.
extremely funny guy. he moves through the material a little to fast but if you ask him for help, he will have no problem staying with you till you get it down perfectly.
U need the book for the class, u have to teach urself basically, he goes too fast, dont miss a class or else u might as well drop the class, u will be totally lost, there are only 4 tests, no quizzes and some HW which is optional most of the time. If u can teach urself n keep up then take him or else, itll be tough!
One of/if not the best math teachers! I've rated before: Check 7/20/05 MATH 228. Bob is awesome! I got the highest grade on the final exam in M228. Why? I studied my ass off! I pulled a C in M1635 w/o doing any homework. I suggest taking less than 15 credit hrs when registered in any of his courses. Homework and group studying is emphasized! Enjoy!
Great teacher but takes forever to return graded homework (we are waiting for hmwk 4 -- just turned in hmwk 9!), promises to give answers to homework sheets and then doesn't so when the test comes, you aren't sure if you did it correctly. And he is very quick to profess american politics in class which can be annoying. Less politics, more grading!
he is the worst teacher ever. do not take any class from him or you will be really sorry. all he cares his PhD, and homeworks that you will never use again. however if you want to take his class learn cos2x = cos^2-sin^2. you will definitely need it. good luck with him. he is also White Sox fan, I hate White Sox.
He has his own way of teaching. His favorite"Dont memorize, visualize!" and "Dont memorize idiot boxes" overall good teacher. Want you to learn basic concepts. Lot of homework but test are straight out of the homework. Funny teacher. When the cell rings all class start dancing!!!
Ok, I honestly didn't like his teaching style. He was never prepared for class (he even admitted it once). He wants you to memorize concepts and know how to proof and develop theorems. During the first weeks of class he didn't do anything. He had issues when trying to work out a problem on the board. Watch out for his discriminatory comments!
he is rude and is not helpful during class. He often makes simple mistakes such as recopying a problem, or adding. If you miss one day of class, he wont let you turn in the previous homework,or the new homework that you just recieved from the day you had missed, unless you somehow finish it in class.he makes you feel dumb for being in 0481 at times
He is a very nice prof. funny @ times. he doesn't use txt book tht much, very rarely. dont miss the class, he gives quiz and home work everyday, which i liked cos its keeps u in practice.
He is an all right teacher. You would literally have to do nothing in class to fail. You would really have to make a study group as he is not the best at showing concepts, One thing i did not like is that he treats his students like there are in high school. Take hime if u need someone at ur back pushing u but if u like doing ur own thing then dont
make no mistakes Cappetta is a difficult teacher, but the material he's teaching really is difficult. you need to be well versed in trig & algebra for calc you'll struggle. he doesn't want you to memorize, he wants you to learn & understand the material in relation to other concepts, this makes his class hard. would take him again& recommend him.
Very clear and concise during class. Treat him with respect and he will treat you in the same fashion. He cares about students actually learning the material, rather than memorizing silly tricks. Sure he'll make some mistakes, but everyone does. Highly recommended. Very knowledgeable.
Take his class if you are up for a challenge. We had four tests. The homework is not for points. There was a quiz at the start of EVERY class. 4 Tests+Quizzes=Your Grade. He curves in our favor. He lectures the whole class, but he moves so fast that I felt like I couldn't ask a question. He is very knowledgeable, just make sure you can keep up.
He is kinda rude, not an easy teacher at all! the material wasnt that bad but he actually made some things more confusing.
I took Mr. Cappetta's online 0482 class and found him to be a great instructor. He always responded to my emails and returned my call when I had to leave him a message. Furthermore, he is also lenient and understanding. My final grade was a C and I feel the material would have been easier to learn if I had been in a classroom setting.
The best teacher i have ever had! very helpful, always prepared for class. However, gives quizes every day, but you could use notes and classmates friend. The quizes actually helped a lot because similar problems were on the test. Don't buy book, assigns reading which he we will explain it in class. Highly recommended!
Highly recommend for those actually interested in math, keep good notes cause the book is really just reference (I never used it once). Test are a little harder but Diff Eq is a hard subject
Good teacher, but wants you to "learn" all the material instead of "memorizing" it, so he has way too many proofs on the exams. Calc 3 was a nightmare! But overall, he is very helpful and teaches really well :)
Definitely not an easy teacher, but probably the best math professor I've had so far. Very smart guy, and he knows how to teach math. You may not leave the class with an A, but you will definitely walk out knowing the stuff. He doesn't just teach how to do problems, but the reasoning behind them. I'd definitely take him again if I had the chance.
I found him to be extremely demanding in homework and had a hard time keeping up. I felt that I was just trying to push paper and not really able to concretely learn anything. Could've been just me but these are my thoughts.
Great teacher. I would take him again, and again. He knows alot about student psychology, and will sometimes try to trick you to see if you understand the math you're being taught. If you're into math, take him for sure. If you're just trying to pass to move on in your major, don't take him, you'll be screeeeewed.
Very, very good professor. He really knows his stuff and makes sure you learn it. Just make sure you have the time to put in to the class- go to help sessions, do some group work, and practice. He won't hand you an A for doing nothing. Awesome guy though!
Don't take him.
If you learn more by doing examples, then take him, otherwise you will be lost. Doesnt teach basic concepts just jump in to examples.. Homeworks are harder than tests.. and tests are based on quizzes so theres no way you cant get at least C on every test.. nice teacher only very CHALLENGING! and if u show improvement he will curve grade at the end.
I took him for numerous classes from the lower maths through diff-eq. He is challenging, no doubt about it. He will expect you to KNOW the material not just follow patterns. You will LEARN in this class! If you do your work, work with others, go to him, you'll succeed! He's also great in the classroom and makes class worth going. One of the best!
Best math teacher I ever had. Take him. Only one advice do the hw and you ll get an A
Great teacher. Actually teaches you how to do math. Very rarely uses the book so he makes his own problems and the problems he uses for the homework show up on the test. The tests are an accurate reflection of what was actually covered in class. Do the homework packets and you'll be fine.
He is a great teacher, will work with you if he see's you making an effort. never used the book once, homework everyday as well as quizes
Awesome! He actually teaches and cares if you learn or not.
He teaches examples instead of concepts. At the end of his class, you will be able to do the problems, but will have a poor conceptual understanding of the underlying procedures. I have had better calculus instructors than him in both high school and college.
I took him, 10 years ago, I cant believe he is still teaching, one of the hardest classes but also the best teachers I ever had. I rate him top notch!!!!!!!!!
Very difficult professor. No syllabus. Book not used. Teaches at very fast pace. No time to ask questions or take notes. Often confusing. Has videos on YouTube that will help. Tests are long and difficult. Quiz every class. Grading on tests and quizes is often incorrect. Check answers against others. No time for any other classes. Take alone.
He gave challenge questions on class, he tough some concept but it's necessary to read by yourself. He focus one the main point but tests will also test the minor ones. The secret to get is good grade is read the text book and familiarize all the questions he give. Take notes will also help the grades.
He was so nice and so helpful. I took his class over the summer so you had to go to class, but he tries to make it all as easy as possible. The final was open note. I would take his class again.
It's a really hard class. I took it on Wednesday nights so it was only once a week. You need to do the homework and make sure you understand the basics. He really does care about the students and is always willing to make arrangements to meet. He also teaches you "modern" stats by using the computer.
Cappetta relies on online videos which is great if it was on online class. However, he seldom teaches the new concepts in class before he assigns the homework. Instead you learn when he goes over the homework or you watch the videos. Again, I would have no problem if this is an online class. He needs to teach the concepts then give the homework.
He's a very good & helping professor.
This man does not post any grades on Blackboard. He does not give homework assignments from the book. Just hands out 5 page math packets with ridiculously complex problems that won't be on the final exam. USE THE TEXT BOOK! YOU'RE GOING TO BE TEACHING YOURSELF! He likes to hear his own voice! He makes many careless errors in his own work.
I dont recommend this professor! I wouldn't even call him a professor because he doesn't teach! He downgrades you and refuses to help in a smart aleck way! Not helpful and rude. often ends class early to leave instead of teaching like he's supposed to, then later your grade suffers. Please take this advice and choose any other professor!
This guy needs a new career! Worst instructor ever! The homework is long and confusing. If you choose to take him then you will be stuck being your own teacher! I do not "emphasis on DO NOT" recommend taking any of his courses. If you do you'' feel my pain! I think its because he's been around for so long he can get away with it! Choose another!
This professors horrible, don't take him!
Not that great of a professor... He simply gives too much hw and tests are difficult because he doesn't cover the material
Just horrible is the best way to describe this professor . I don't recommend him not even to an enemy. Someone should report him I feel like I got scammed
I do not recommend this teacher at all. Worst I've ever experienced, I did not like this guy whatsoever!
Over a 2 hour class with this professor is equivalent to hell ! I wish I can turn back time and never if had took this guy. He doesn't teach I can't learn from packets. I don't like relying on classmates to figure out material. He needs to be taught in HOW to teach.
I would appreciate it if he could just change his teaching patterns. Not everyone learns one way. I disliked how he spoke to himself while doing a problem on the board (once in a blue moon). In order for kids to understand he has to make the kids excited and eager to learn not hate the material due to lack on his part. Stay away from this guy..
I took a six week course with him so obviously the material was rushed through. I think he did the best that he could in this short amount of time. He was a good teacher. If you do all of the homework and take good notes, you will do well on the tests. They are almost the same exact questions. Overall, I had a pretty good experience with him.
Class was a short one but he wasnt that good of a teacher. he would not help outside of class and was kind of rude to students
He gives hard problems that make you think, but by doing these problems he gives you mastery over the material. If you want to learn, he is the professor to pick
I can see how he would be a good higher mathematics teacher IFF you take his lower classes too (trig, calc1, calc2). He has a very unique teaching style, but in his calc3 class, you need to know his tricks and the basics SPECIFIC TO HIS TEACHING STYLE in order to do well and understand what he is doing in class. Also make friends in class ASAP!
I believe Cappetta is an amazing professor. He pushes students to do their best and acknowledges you when you're doing well; as well as trying. He helps you when you struggle and is by far the most scariest man I've ever met....maybe its because he's italian. He is awesome. Take him if you want to be awesome at integrating and understand math.
Cappetta is the best. Very difficult compared to other professors though, so be prepared! However, taking his class will immensely increase your math skills both in Calculus and beyond. Very much appreciate the instruction he provided. I stress again though: very difficult! Take him anyways! See how deep the rabbit hole goes....
I come from a Big Ten school and took calculus 3 over the summer at COD. Cappetta is a pretty challenging professor. You have to work hard in his class but you learn a great deal. He is not easy but if you put in the work you will do fine and learn a lot.
I don't think it's a coincidence that bad ratings are under his name one its misspelled. for his real ratings, check Robert Cappetta. You will see he has a 4.2.
This is an awesome professor. The class is very demanding but if you do the homework you''ll have a pretty good understanding of the material. He doesn''t use the book so he makes up his own problems. He likes to have you work in groups so that is awesome. I really recommend him and I plan on taking him through diff eq.
I had him from calc 1 all the way through Differential equations. He was the best math teacher I've had in my entire life. The topic of his phd thesis was about how people learn mathematics. He wasn't easy at all, but the way he teaches you is amazing. Work in groups and you will pass. Understand the concepts and you'll do well.
ARE YOU READY TO CALCUALTE?!?! BECAUSE YOU BETTER BE!!! His test are tough, and you HAVE to pay attention in class. Other than that just put the time in and you'll succeed.
Really nice guy, but really hard!! Would not recommend if not an engineering major.
By far one of the greatest math teachers I've ever had. Lectures are direct and to the point, clarity is off the charts, understanding of the topic is superb. Yeah sure his tests are hard, but what do you expect in Calc 3? Definitely recommend him if you're a STEM major. Really funny guy as a cherry on top. Work hard and you'll reap the rewards
I heard he was a good but hard teacher so I took him because this class was important to me and I wanted to learn it well. But his online version of the class is ridiculously laden with unnecessary work, lots of discussion board "peer support", term paper, etc. I met smart students who had to drop this. It's easy math, he just makes it hard.
I already reviewed this online class, but I wanted to be clear that it was I being critical of the way he conducted an ONLINE class. I still think he would be a great teacher to have in a conventional classroom setting. I thought I should make that distinction.
Capetta is a great teacher. Pay attention and you'll get it.
Incredibly smart guy. Is always available for students with extra help.. if you are a math major, he's the one to take. His tests are incredibly tough and you have to earn your A. If you commit at least 2 hours a day to his class, you will get that A.
Overall, the class went well. Each topic had a video lecture and everything was understandable after some practice. Consisted of quizzes due every few days (+ corrections upon grading), take home tests, midterm & final. Also had a discussion board for helpquestions. Prof. was usually very quick with grading, feedback and help.
By far the best math prof I've had. I would've gotten a D if not for his help, and even though I was pretty much convinced I'd get a C, he made a deal with me so I could keep my scholarship if I got an A on my final. Overall, awesome guy.
Not very helpful at all. Although he does provide his phone number within the syllabus, he sounds very mono toned and bothered when you actually call him to clarify his sometimes off-the-wall instructions. He does not communicate at all. His notes that he uploads for us to read have the most messiest handwriting. Seems bored of teaching.
This was not a good professor period. Grading does not make sense, and no partial credit is given. No curves on grades. He is sometimes a nice guy, but is a perfectionist and doesnt care about your grade at all. He also never has solutions for homework, exams or quizzes, and doesn't go over it.
I took Math 1102 online. It was an easy class to pass. Two quizzes and discussion board posts per week. Listen to the lecture online, do the practice problems to prepare for the quizzestest, you will pass. All tests are proctored at the testing centers with at least 4-5 days to complete each. Easy peasy.
I miss Dr. Cappetta! At U of I now and really wish I had someone with his conciseness. Best math teacher in the land (and literally, according to national rankings, one of the leaders in calculus) so you're in for learning if you take him. People rating him poorly are just mad they couldn't get easy As in his class. Switch your major for easy As.
If you truly care about your education Cappetta is the man. He is tough no doubt but what would the point be if it was easy? Calculus is hard regardless of professor. He will prepare you for the next level. Also he is very funny and makes lecture fly by, great teacher and easy to talk to.
Best math teacher I've ever had. He goes through every step of the problem to make sure you understand. Is clear on what is a good /bad idea during lectures. I have to stress, you have to work HARD and spend time outside of class working on the homework and problems from class in order to get the most of it, highly recommend if you are committed.
Robert is a great professor, but the class isn't an easy A you have to work for it and besides quizzes and tests there really aren't any points available. Extra Credit? what extra credit?!?!?!?! Homework Points? what homework points?!?!?!?! just do the homework, watch the videos, and seek help when needed and you'll do fine.
Three Words to describe him, Best math professor, I have ever had!
Online class uses video lectures. Weekly quizzes are tough, but you can use your book. 3 exams. E1 was mostly metric system. E2 was solutions/dosages/conversions. E3 was beginning statistics. Know how to manipulate formulas. No homework points. No extra credit. His videos are clear & informative. Don't receive feedback on quizzes or tests
Calculus by no means is an easy subject but a significant portion of the difficulty is due to poor pedagogy and instruction. Professor Cappetta not only knows his mathematics but he also knows how to teach. He heavily discourages memorization. His lectures emphasize concepts over formulas and thus are highly enlightening. Tests are tough but fair.
Quizzes are given weekly - directions are not clear whatsoever, so points are docked if you interpret the question differently. Some questions are over material never presented in lecture, homework, or textbook. Tests are very difficult. It's almost as if he doesn't care about the students and doesn't care if they end up failing. DONT TAKE
Since the class was online, he had files that were walk throughs (as if you were actually in a classroom) as well as YouTube videos to follow along.
Math is hard but Cappetta's lectures are thorough and his pre-lecture practice problems that he goes over help retain past information. There's online homework and book work so just buy an ebook. The tests are difficult so make sure to study a few days beforehand. There's 2 pt, one question quizzes once a week but they're usually not difficult.
His lectures for precalc are awuful. He teaches through example problems and does them very quickly assuming no one has questions. This was his first year at UIC and he was not very helpful to students that are new to this material.
Not reccomended for first year undergraduate studetnts, brutal class!
This man is a godtier teacher. Every class has homework but he makes it his duty to help you learn and remember most of your content. No laptops in class but it is still an enjoyable class. He also looks like Mr. Rogers.
GRETA IS A BABE
it is obvious how much Prof. Cappetta truly cares that his students know the material. His teaching method not to simply show you the equation and have you memorize, but to show you how to derive the equation. When it comes to teaching, you will know this material in the long run since his teaching style is like that. Overall, great great math Prof
Professor Cappeta is very thorough with his lectures and makes study guides and videos for every exam. He wants us to succeed.
He takes the time to make sure his students know the material well. His style of teaching and presenting math challenges the student, but helps them fully understand what's going on, showing you how and WHY you got to the answers ("don't just memorize, but visualize"). He can teach a little fast, but his lectures are great and informative overall.
Avoid at all costs. Lectures fast assuming everyone understands what he's saying. He's also often extremely rude to people who take out their phone, come into class late or leave even 5 mins early. There are better professors for Precalc at UIC
He is very rude to students and shows favoritism. He's the worst math professor I have had due to how mean he is when asking him questions in class and also over email. He is not helpful at all. Unless you're an A+ student, he won't be nice to you or even respect you. Every encounter I've had with him has been terrible.
He moves through the material way too fast and doesn't let anyone ask questions. Don't even bother emailing him as he probably will not reply. Attendance is mandatory and if you leave early, he will make sure to comment on it in front of the entire class. Condescending. If you have trouble understanding math in general, avoid taking his class.
His lectures are him simply doing practice problems, but it's effective. He explains all his steps. He oftentimes mentions test problems/quiz problems in the lecture before the exam/quiz so make sure to show up. He makes you sign in for every lecture via a sign in sheet. Overall, he's a solid professor.
Only passed because a friend already learned all the material before. No calculators allowed. Speeds through material while barely explaining steps, making it hard to keep up. Does do a lot of practice problems though, and posts lot of practice videos before exams. Even after all of this, he is still one of the better professors sadly.
