A tough professor
Rude, condecending, not worth taking if you can help it.
straightforward. not afraid to tell you you're an idiot
Very straightforward. Don't take unless you enjoy writing. Tests are easy.
He is ver intimidating --owns too many pairs of glasses
Brilliant man, but horror of a human being! Beware.
Dr. Carballo is my favorite professor of all time
Extremely opinionated, especially in religion, fundamentalists beware!
A fair professor - very refreshing to have one who isn't afraid to tell thetruth
A good guy. Knows his stuff. A stichler for proper classroom etiquette.
His tests are hard and the text is impossible.
Inspiring Prof if you work hard

Not a bad guy, lots of readings, difficult tests
His class was interesting and enjoyable; learned a lot from him.
Highly intelligent, & always interesting.
He is a jerk and thinks he is better than everyone else.....don't take him
His cultural background makes him seem rude, but he really isn't, he's just confident about what he teaches. Good guy...scared of tests..haven't taken one yet. Reading is out of this world! AHHH!!!
He's brilliant! I have learned so much. I just took the first exam and it was refreshing and enjoyable! That says a lot, I think.
He's hard to get at first but if you bear with him and do the readings you'll do fine on the tests
No Comments
Take good notes, read, and study the night before tests and you will be fine...sometimes it seems like he is a rough teacher, but all in all...its not that bad
he spends far too much time preaching about his religious beliefs. isn't this supposed to be a PUBLIC university?
Snobby but brilliant! Interesting but horrible human being! Take Centola over him.
he's awful...boring and stuck up.
Dr. Carballo is brilliant, and I learned quite a lot from him. I HIGHLY recommend that any English majors take his courses. You will learn a lot. You will work hard, but come on...your in college peeps.
perhaps the most arrogant, intolerant person i've ever known
You have to earn your grade, but you will learn a lot.

He is so full of knowledge and is very passionate about his work: however, his tests are tough esp. for those who aren't really into Lit. I learned a lot from him, but I wouldn't take any of his other classes.
This is a great class taught by a great professor. The material is good, and the class discussions are great. I believe that Dr.Carballo's excitement with the material is infectuous. This class is great if you put the work into it.
Very intelligent, helpful and interested in opinions of students. Class discussions are extraordinary! Tests, however, are hardest of any professor I've taken and it's very difficult to earn more than a high B.
I find him to be an exceptional teacher.Very clear in his ideas and thoughts. For students who are passionate about literature I would suggest taking his class. He has a good personality too.
Dr. Carballo is extremely knowledgeable, and cares about his students. However, his grading procedures do not asses student learning. The quizzes are almost impossible. They contain questions about footnotes.... He's an aging perennialist.
Good person; socially immature; Great intellectual; Horrible grader
I learned a LOT from Dr. Carballo. However, it was impossible to do anything for him to earn an "A." Getting an "A" on an exam is a shot in the dark. Good luck!
He is difficult to understand, but he knows his material. He expects everyone has read the masterpieces which refers to often. I would not take a class taught by him again.
Don't take this class if you don't want to learn some Latin or memorize many, many things.
INCREDIBLE PROFESSOR! He's so knowledgable on many different subjects. He helps you understand what you're reading and makes it interesting. If you lover literature, he's the man for the job. If you're looking for an easy A, keep looking.
Discriminated against me for no reason. Do not smile in his class because it is offensive to him. Shrewd and unhappy.
Two important points for Carballo: 1)take his class if you want to learn all there is to know about Lit, 2)do not take his class if you are only worried about what your transcript looks like - I have taken several classes with him and have only seen him give on A BUT I have learned a ton!
the class was intresting and i learned a lot, however, i only came out of that class with a C-. his tests are extremely hard and there is A LOT of reading. but it was a good experience...even though it totally hurt my GPA.
good guy
Awesome professor, I'm so glad I took the class. If you're looking for an easy A, move on, because he is going to make you work to earn it. However, if you want a professor that knows what he's talking about and loves the subject, he's the man. Also very helpful outside of class. JUST ASK!
What a jerk. Do not walk, RUN away from this prof
excellent balance between lecture and class discussion~to improve your grade, read carefully (to remember); when the work is considered, underline the portions of the text which are mentioned and note in your book the comments made by RC~review these before exams, along with the notes from the board
Excellent Professor! I've had him 3 times and have learned an incredible amount from him! He's not easy, but it's definitely possible to do really well in his classes! He has a great sense of humor as well!
What a bunch of whiners! Does anyone here realize this is college and not kindergarten - professors are supposed to expect a lot from you...it's their job. If any of you are education majors, take a lesson from some of the greats here at Millersville - Carballo is one of them.
Great professor and is extremely clear on what will be tested. Doesn't make a lot of jokes or goof off, but the class is easy if you actually read the material and pay attention in class. I'd take him again. Just watch out for his multiple choice questions.
An old-school literary fundamentalist who knows nothing about how to teach writing. Take Halden-Sullivan, Mayers, or Archibald for Advanced Comp. Avoid Carballo at all costs.
Really great professor - extremely nice, friendly, and helpful, especially once he gets to know you. Can be intimidating on the first day of class, but if you hang in there, he's really very nice and can be fun. As long as you take good notes in class and put in the study time, you'll do well.
Multiple choice--not easy...can really mess up your grade. That's the ONLY downside, though. He's an excellent prof. with LOTS and LOTS to say...if you're looking to get an easy A, stay away. Looking to learn, even if you don't get the A? Take this prof. Highlights include rants about the rudeness of Ganser library's appearance and subtle but present humor. If I was still in college, I would take him again, even after I earned that C.
I had heard some things about Carballo before I even considered his class, but then one friend said, "Take him and see." So I did, and have no regrets. Energetic, knowledgeable, slightly pompous but it's all in fun! I've never met a teacher that I appreciated more who taught all the best things an English major could want to learn. Take him.
Difficult, but worthwhile. I've also taken him for Comparative Literature, a much higher course (400 level). His 400 classes are actually easier; they're entirely essay-based, whereas his 200 level and lower classes have very specific multiple choice questions that contain several possibly correct answers. A challenge, but worth it.
He was not helpful. Plus, when he said I spelled a few words wrong, in fact they were spelled right, he did not have a dictionary to prove his claim.
Relatively boring class, he's not that bad. Just come to class and do the reading and you'll be fine. His style is pretty much straight up lecture, so drink some coffee before class. He brings up religion a lot.
Awesome. Couldn't wait to attend class everyday, just to see what he would say that day. Interesting and intelligent. Knows his stuff. Not easy, though. Study well, attend class and you will be fine. PS: Devote a good amount of time to participating in discussions.
I love this man.
He has an interesting voice and accent, which is fun to listen to, but a bad attitude. His tests are a bit tough, but very predictable, so you can do well in his class if you work hard. Smile a lot or he drops your grade, and raise your hand every now and then if you want to boost your grade.
Awesome class, good prof. Learned tons in his class and gained a new appreciation for Greek Literature. You will learn a ton! Pay attention, participate daily (it doesn't matter if you answer incorrectly at times, he views it as, "atleast you tried"). Tests are tricky, just WRITE EVERYTHING ON THE BOARD DOWN and you will be fine. Awesome.
UHHHHHHHHH AWFUL
a total jerk. If he doesnt like you watch out... He makes you feel like crap about your work if you dont do well on a paper or test.
Dr. Carballo is one of the finest teachers I've ever had. You must come to class and participate. If you do this and aren't a slacker, he will like you. However, you don't get any gift grades with him. You must do the work. He is old school, and very fair. Study the notes and read before each class. If you take good notes, you'll do fine.
He is definitely "old school," but I learned so much from him. Short stories is my new favorite genre. Pay attention, take notes, and study. If you have a question, ask. He is opinionated, but who isn't?
I've had Dr. Carballo for 3 classes and counting so far. Basically if you attend every class and take good notes you'll do great. I've never actually read any of the readings but merely pay attention in class and take very good notes. 3 pages is usual for an hour and 15 min course. I wouly probably have an A if I read.
This man is a very mean arrogant person, but very smart. I would avoid taking him unless you have a lot of prior knowledge of World Literature. His tests are extremely hard and he can be harsh about your work. You will learn a lot, but you still might not come out with a good grade. He is not willing to help only refers you to other students.
He is very... opinionated. While he says anyone is free to think what they want, he tends to make it fairly clear that his opinion is really the only one that matters. They say you either love Carballo or you hate Carballo... I was in between. Didn't hate... didn't love.
He isn't very specific about his expectations. People who have had previous classes with him seem to do a lot better just because they know what he expects.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. I literally hate him with every fiber of my being. When he's not wasting our class time talking about his religion and life when he was young, he is insulting the few people that actually participate in class. If you don't have to take him, DON'T!
He is a very smart man, and very passionate about what he teaches. If you feel the same way as him about what he teaches you are golden, but if you have any other opinion he'll just shoot you down. His tests are aimed at those that are profficent in Lit and if your not (like me) you'll never get better than a C... He despises education majors as

An exceptional teacher. Has a great understanding of literature and related disciplines.
A tenured Professor whose class focuses solely on Poetry. Is indeed knowledgeable in his area of study, though he limits student interaction severely. Questioning is unacceptable. The tests are both essay and multiple choice, and knowledge of what he writes on the board is essential in passing.Best to read text AFTER the class its assigned for.
This class is suppose to be english lit from 1800 to present, but now at end of semeseter we are only reaching 1900 and it has been solely poetry(??). This is much like learning only probability in statistics or about RNA in biology - it shouldnt be done.
I love Dr. Carballo. He's one of my favorite professors at Millersville. He's opinionated, sometimes arrogant, but always clear about what you need to know. He teaches really great short stories so definitely read them! Taking great notes pretty much guarantees an A on tests
An exceptional teacher.
Great Teacher.
Dr. Carballo is a great professor. Sometimes I feel scared to answer in his class but only because he can be opinionated at times. You need to read and pay attention to his lectures. Overall he's a good guy who knows his stuff. I just wish he wasn't so intimdating at times.
He is a great teacher; but a miserable man. He enjoys making the few who dare to participate feel stupid, shoots down any opinion that differs from his own,and feels he is better than everybody. Prior knowledge of religion and world lit help. READ AND GO TO CLASS IF YOU WANT TO PASS!!!
Brilliant, enthusiastic, inspiring professor. I was in class to learn about the evolution of Romanticism; he is the scholar/teacher, not me. This is not an "about YOUR opinion" class-If you want to learn/understand from the expert, then hold your opinion and learn from this brilliant scholar who will provide you with a wealth of information.
Dr.Carballo is an excellent teacher always willing to help all his students. I was his student for 2 semesters and have always enjoyed his views on the subject though not all times I could agree with them. He likes his students to have a healthy mental disposition and is appreciative of intellectual brilliance a student can display.I respect him.
He is my absolute favorite professor at MU. He is challenging but the knowledge you gain is amazing. He cares about his students so much and he is very entertaining. I took 3 classes with him and I hope to take more if possible.
Dr. Carballo is a very fascinating professor. He is very outspoken and opinionated, but at the same time his opinions will make you laugh. He is very clear about what he wants from his students. You have to study hard and take good notes to pass his tests. Overall, not a bad professor at all.
He is an ignorant old man that uses his fancy rhetoric to make himself sound smart. If you actually listen to what he says, when he talks about anything other than english, he is wrong. Also I hope you know what coherence means before going into this class, because he doesn't explain it, and if you don't use it then you'll fail. Good luck.
Carballo is very strict but sometimes really funny. Besides the 1 day he got mad at me for the most stupid reason & suggested me dropping the class(?), he's a great teacher! Helped me become a better writer. Explains things very well. The fact that he's strict makes the class seem really difficult, but he doesn't grade as harshly as u might think.
Carballo is a nice person face to face but can be pretty rude in class to other students. He yelled at a girl for yawning and pretty much made an embarrassment of her. He is very opinionated but he lets you know what he's looking for on tests. You MUST read the book and take good notes. Overall, the class isn't that terrible.
He is an ok professor, but he is very opinionated and sometimes this can really take time out of lecture periods, especially when he ALWAYS complains about how Oprah and Dr. Phil always "psychobabble". Tests are tough, and you will be expected to read A LOT if you want to pass. Take at your own risk!
This class was very interesting. I think he is a very interesting professor who knows what he is talking about. Tests are hard, but he tells you what to expect. Very helpful if you have questions. Overall one of the better professors I have had. Be prepared to do the work.
Dr. Carballo is not everyone's cup of tea, but I love his classes. I've taken 2 and signed up for a third. He goes on some tangents, but you always learn something from those tangents, even if it isn't related to the subject matter. Yes, he brings up religion, but even as a non-Christian, I enjoy all the facts he brings up. Read, take notes and
What can I say--Dr. Carballo is a superb educator! His lectures are always interesting, and he is very knowledgable about what he is teaching. Great sense of humor too! He allows students to make use of their texts during exams in order to quote the material--this makes sense, since it enables the student to write more detailed essays. Fair & kind.
Okay as a professor, but one of the most atrocious people I've ever had the misfortune of meeting. He humiliates his students, doesn't apologize for it, disrespected an OIF veteran in my class, and goes on tangents constantly. I didn't drop his class because I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of me leaving. And I'm an English/Comp. Lit. major.
He does not explain anything and his method of teaching is incomprehendable. He only gives you 3 grades all year and he is a perfectionist.
I didn't think he was that bad of a prof; a little intimidating at times (especially when yelling at students for being disrespectful, regardless whether it was tardiness or merely yawning in class), but can really disect a book. there were only 3 grades TOTAL in that class, so there's not much room for error with him.
I absolutely love Dr. Carballo. I have taken him for more than one class and I would love to take more with him. He is the most intelligent man/prof. I have ever had. Highly recommended. Be sure to show up for class and participate because it helps your grade out.
I thought that Dr. Carballo was a great teacher. He is very intimidating at first. He also is very opinionated, but I thought he was funny as well. He likes to be respected and he'll do the same to you. I learned a lot from his class, also you must read and study. Over all I enjoyed his class!
He is a touch teacher, but a nice guy. If you're willing to do a bunch of work and to do your very best to understand every story to the smallest detail, then he's a good teacher. His tests are in no way easy, and he only has 3 grades for the semester, but he's not horrible
He's an intelligent man who knows the subject matter well, but the class was hardly enjoyable apart from his rants on Oprah and Dr. Phil. I didn't find him to be the most polite professor, and I personally wouldn't recommend his class.
He is great as a professor when it comes to discussions, but his test formats are challenging regardless if you have read or read twice. He comes from an interesting heritage which made me want to stay with the class for the rest of the semester. Take him is you enjoy challenging readings and tests.
I have had Dr. Carballo for a couple classes. One low level course and one high level course. I could listen to him lecture all day. He is a strict professor, but why expect anything else? -It is college. You MUST READ to pass his tests. Don't let his facade scare you. He's nice when you respect him.
Carballo is the worst professor I have ever had. He does not care about his students whatsoever and will not help you. He blatantly says that most of the students should not be in college.tests are impossible- 20 question multiple choice and 1 essay. The mc is each worth 4 points so 3 wrong and you're done. He tells you what to study and its wrong.
He always drops hints in class about things you should focus on. In order to pass his class you have to be crystal clear on the material. There are a limited number of grades, so you have to study hard. This is college folks. It is absolutely worth it for what you take from the class, and his rants in class are entertaining. The man is a genius.
He expects a lot from his students. Attendance is mandatory and participation is expected. If you do all of the reading and take notes during class meetings, you should do fine on the tests. It can be a lot of reading some weeks, but that is to be expected in a college course. He is also very opinionated and is not afraid to share his thoughts.
He can be intimidating at first. My advice is read, take notes, and participate in class. Exams are not hard but each question is 4 pts, so if you get 2 wrongs do not expect an A. I would take him again.
I love romantic literature. What I don't love is this professor. Some people will find his rants about sharks hilarious, but I found him opinionated and displeasing. He has very high expectations for college academics. His tests are more annoying than difficult. He'll require you to use the blue books that no one else uses. TAKE NOTES IN YOUR BOOK!
Everything you have read about this man is true; opinionated- very, genius- absolutely, clear- most of the time. This man has a vast amount of knowledge that he loves to convey, but his opinions do tend to hinder the learning experience. He is clear on what to study, and makes it a point for you to be interactive. You MUST so the readings.
Dr. Carballo is a very passionate and opinionated teacher. While he does get distracted easily and convery his opinions his explanations of class material are very well thought out. People complain about his opinionated rants but that's just his personality. You need to read the material or else he will call you out on it. That's life, get over it.
expects a lot from his students. He doesn't treat you like a child. The class is a lot of work but completely rewarding once you are done. You will learn about from his class and you will spend many many nights writing. A class with him is worth the money!
So I was pretty nervous about having Dr. Caballo, mainly due to his negative rap. He is extremely easy. Yes he rants and all but he works with you and gives you ample opportunity to be successful. He only asks for respect.
Mr. Carballo is an intelligent and passionate professor. I really enjoyed this class! If you are in college to learn, this is the professor for you. If you are taking classes to just breeze through school, and looking for an easy professor, look elsewhere. Put your phone away during class, and pay attention to his lectures, they are valuable.
The worst professor ever. He is the walking devil. He grades papers in a confusing way and if he doesn't get along with you expect the worst! Will never take him again.
My favorite english prof at MU. He is so interesting. Love him to death! Would take all his classes if I could.
The course content was enjoyable, but he often went on annoying conservative rants that distracted from class. Rather than having good discussions about the literature, we'd have to hear him drone on about why "sentimentalists" are stupid and global warming is a lie.
My least favorite professor at MU. His lectures are 80% about his opinions and beliefs and 20% about the content that will be on the test. His tests were nicknamed "multiple guess" in my class. He refuses to help students outside of class and directs you to his graduate student. Very impolite. Carballo needs to get off his high horse.
Dr. Carballo is an excellent professor. His lectures are engaging, with plenty of back and forth between professor and students. While he is very open about his opinions, Dr. Carballo presents them in a funny way so as not to offend students. Tests are very reasonable. Go to class and keep up with the reading and you'll be fine.
Dr. Carballo, to put it simply, is one o the best professors at the University. His class is tough, so for those who are not looking to put in hard work, don't bother. He expects you to readand think deeply. If you come to class prepare to be enamored by his wealth og knowledge. He is a true acemic mind, and I cannot stress how I admire him.
For serious English majors, this is the professor for you. I've heard complaints from only students who aren't passionate about literature and writing. Showing up for every class and participation is a must. Millersville is lucky to have Dr. Carballo.
One of the best professors at Millersville! If you go to his classes, take notes and read the material, it will be pretty easy. He is very focused on the materials, his lectures are straightforward and on topic and he is very entertaining and amusing to listen to as well! Highly recommend taking any of his classes.
Carballo is not very accommodating or friendly: he views everything in his way (and it's his way or no way). His tests are multiple guess (even he calls it that). This is the hardest class I've ever taken in my whole life. Your book is NEEDED and reading is NEEDED to even attempt to pass. If you can get another English professor, do it.
I think he is very smart and knows what he's teaching... But he's kind of rude and only listens to his own opinions. He is very strict and kind of scary too.
Extremely conservative & opinionated. DON'T take if you're not heterosexual or if you're trans. Expect to pretend you think he's right about everything if you want to pass. Knows his stuff, but is insufferable. Class isn't hard if you attend (for English majors, anyway). I got an A- and hardly studied. Still wouldn't take again - he's that bad.
Carballo is very knowledgable, and his rants can be amusing (he's outspokenly conservative) but there are only 3 tests made up of 20 multiple choice and an essay. The mc are worth 4 points each, and due to the subjectivity of literature, the tests can be hard to earn good grades on, but he is generally pretty clear about what to study.
This is definitely a professor that you need to be in every class for. He took attendance in just about every class except for maybe two. He had three major tests during the semester which consisted of multiple choice and an essay for each test. The multiple choice was challenging, so take that into account. His lectures can be interesting.
Had to withdraw from class because of profs refusal to follow my learning plan. A bunch of higher ups got involved and the university refunded me for the class and the books, and apologized for his behavior though...
Dr. Carballo was one of the best professors I've had so far at Millersville. As long as you pay attention and take notes and participate in this class you will do well. Many people didn't like him but I did. He was also able to keep lectures quite interesting.
In my Senior Year I changed majors from English to environmental science. Since graduation HE haunts my drams, HE determines how I write my scientific essays, HE criticizes my findings, HIS acute understanding of humanity has shaped my world view, HE is the hardest and best professor I have ever had studied under, take him if you want to learn.
Dr. Carballo is one of the finest professors who has left quite an impression on me. It was a delight to hear him discuss Browning, the pre Raphaelite poets, Ruskin's "Stones in Venice" and Walter Pater' "Leonardo's Mona Lisa." He brought a sense of great class and sublimity to our discussions. "Thank you Dr. Carballo" after all these years.
