Awesome. Makes history fun.
This is a guy who's class fills up because everyone wants to take him. He's a great guy, and actually talks to his students.
What an AWSOME professor! He is just the sweetest thing and is always willing to help if you have trouble understanding and stuff. He totally helps to keep it real! I’m changing my major to history and would take ALL my classes with Dr. Carriker if I co
No one is better. I have friends who told me to take this prof and they were right. He is great. Really takes the time to explain things. Some others in this dep are so arrogant but Carriker knows what he is dooing. I learned soooooo much.
Great lectures. Is enthusiastic and funny. Take this professor. Hes one of the best.
Intersting and organized. Always willing to take extra time to explain things. Class is fun and never boring. Tests are moderately difficult.
Great class. Kepps your attention. I would take him again. Recomend him very highly.
immidiately likeable and approachable, great professor
I took both 221 and 222 froom him. Only needed one historu course, but he makes the subject fun and worthwhile. I hated history in high school but not anymore. Grade A professor.
He is crazy good!!!!
Great Teacher

Throughout my whole college carrier he is one of the BEST professors I had. There is never a dull moment in his class, and while his tests aren't easy they aren't hard because the way he teaches makes you really grasp the material
He is awesome. Really. Take his class. But come on time.
He makes history seem interesting, but his test are a little difficult. READ the book, and show up for every class, he will curve your grade for your efforts.
Dr. Carriker is a teaching GOD! The best teacher EVER! Pretty hard but your effort will pay off if you read and study. Fun classes!
Loved him!
Cool professor. Follows book and CD. Test are a little harder, but he is fairly easy. Funny and interesting.
Nice guy, but his teaching sucks. Funny in class but kinda hard to understand what is important and not due to the comments between things.
Great class. Makes it fun. Kind of hard on attendence so watch out for that. You study and he'll help you in the exam. Lectures are organized and
He is the best history teacher that i have ever seen! He makes the class fun and it is easy to learn from him. Hard on attendance, but great class!
really entertaining teacher...i enjoyed his class...his tests are not that bad. i studied the night before the tests and got a B.
Had this professor for 221 and 222. Very interesting, makes History easy to understand and fun.
He is wonderful! Full of energy! DO NOT BE LATE! Makes history fun and entertaining. Read the book for quizes! Tests come mostly from lecture and from previous quizes!
As a senior taking this class, it is unfortunately a waste of time. DO NOT BE LATE for his class, although he tends to take time off randomly and is late alot you can't be tardy or you will be considered absent. He serious about absences which is unfair. I disagree with some the comments about his being an excellent professor. I am not impressed.
if you're late, don't walk in. the material is pretty interesting and he makes it interesting. tests are pretty easy, multiple choice and 2 essay. first history i've ever passed!
Best Professor EVER! Makes you work but has the greatest insights of any teacher at this school. His lecture on the history of Boston and Old North Church was truly compelling and gave me insights about history I would NEVER have known without his brilliance! Take him if you can!
Great teacher. Easy to get along with, just a normal guy. We only had a midterm and 10 quizzes until the last 2 weeks of class, where we had 2 papers due, a presentation, and a final. Great teacher, makes you work hard, but makes it worth it!
funny guy. lectures are interesting and his tests are not bad. probably one of the best history proffesors you can get.
Carriker is a pretty cool guy. He actually makes the subject matter pretty interesting, and his tests aren't easy, but nothing that wasn't covered in class. I personally thought his sense of humor was hilarious, although I was frequently the only person laughing at his jokes. Overall, I'd definitely recommend him. Just DONT let him catch you textin
Let's just say before I came into his class I hate history! Now I just love it or better i just love going to his class. All you have to do it show up to class on time (or you will left out of the picture), listen, and take notes. I'm taking his class and he knows how to relate the history to his students to make it interesting. Excellent Teacher.
Mr. Carriker is an excellent teacher who has mastered the ability to communicate his knowledge to students. I never had much of an interest in history until I took this class. Very enjoyable, and I would highly recommend him.
i am a history major. i LOVED this class. he is a great teacher. he gives great notes and his test come stright from them. if you are not a history major and have to take a history, you should take him. he makes class intersting
I never much cared for history before taking his class, but now I do! Dr. Carriker is awesome. He makes history easy to understand and fun to learn. Also, did anyone else find him strangely attractive? Hahah.
Talk about a great professor! And there is nothing ?strange? about his attractiveness! He is just dreamy! I wish I could take all of my classes with Dr. Carriker. I wish he would become MY friend on facebook!
Fantastic professor. Must have learned from his famous father, a professor at Gonzaga University.
This guy has been everywhere and done everything. His brainpower is vast!
AWESOME---did history on the move. it was sooo much fun!!enroll in that program! boudin rox!
he is by far one of my favorite teachers in the history department! he makes history easy to understand, and he gave us study guides that were word for word on the test. so easy if you study! only gives two test, and a final. attendance is MANDITORY!! so taking it at 8am is not a good idea! but he is very nice to look at :)
Good teacher. Tests were easy because his graduate assistant made great study guides. I think they might be tougher without her. Two tests and the exam, which wasn't comprehensive. Textbook sections on the test - some were open book and some weren't. Also, there were 2 primary source readings that we had to write on.
Loved him! Some parts of the test were open book. The T.A. gives a study guide which is pretty helpful. Just go to class and you will pass unless you're lazy.
Such an easy teacher! But, you must attend class. He actually has pictures taken of the whole classroom before he begins his lecture! Tests are pretty easy and you actually learn things.
Nice.
I went into this class expecting what everybody on here said: parts of the tests open book, study guides, etc. But there wasn't! Our tests were all short answers and a 3 page essay. You definitely have to study and READ THE BOOK. However, Dr. Carriker really knows his history and makes it interesting to learn. If you're okay with studying take him!
I was shocked when I got the first test, almost blank, you write your hand off with short answer, fill in the blank, and a 3 page essay. definitely read the book, preferably not the day before the test. I ended with a B which I was happy about
This course was on historic preservation. It was so interesting. There were weekly assignments that were aimed at directly interacting with the preservation community. A lot more fun and interesting than a textbook! He is very nice!
He was better than I expected after reading these reviews. He let us make up our own test which made it so much easier! Come to class and take good notes!!
The test were easy, but he had this belief that students were competing against each other for the best written essay. We could write as much as was given to us but he wanted more. He made the class interesting, but it was crazy how he wanted us to compete with each other on an essay, length wise:(
He is a very interesting teacher, but he goes off subject a lot. Also, do not buy any books because he will never use them/ he will usually cancel a lot of classes/writing assignments because he is the department head. The test are crazy because he believes that students are competing against each for the best essays.
Dr. Carriker is very cool. He is always open to conversation or comments. At first he tells you your going to be doing quizzes and writing assignments. In reality there are no other assignments besides the tests. He tends to cancel class a lot and his tests are a breeze. Attendance mandatory because he takes a picture.
very funny and interesting; very knowledgeable; good lectures
this man is funny and talks about hiself and his family alot but its any easy A ... sometmes he tale roll and sometimes he desnt can only miss three class if he even takes roll
LOVE CARRIKER! One of the best profs I've ever had. He's funny and weirdly attractive (take his class and you'll see). He "lectures" the entire class but gets off topic and tells jokes/ personal stories. No assignments other than the tests. He goes over what will be on test. He did not do the "essay competition" thing in my class. it's an easy A
He's amazing!! very nice man his lectures are interesting Go to class and take great notes. he gives a very helpful outline. If you have the chance to take him TAKE HIM!
Yo this guy was awesome. Made lectures entertaining and he's pretty funny. Takes a picture of the class as role so and he doesn't post slides online so you need to go to pass. Only has tests and they're essay questions however he basically tells you the questions beforehand so you can study. Textbook not required.
Tells amazing stories, and pretty hilarious. Loves his class and every aspect he teaches you, very genuine person. Originally meeting the guy, he tends to be very intimating but actually isn't! His test consist of short answers, and does require a fair amount of studying to make good grades. Attendance is a big factor as well, he takes pictures.
very clear about what he wants from you. class is important!!! go everyday and take very good notes, tests will be a breeze. 2 tests and a final. wants you to write a lot on the tests. he likes when you have 2 pages worth of answer for 1 question but 1 test was only 2 questions. YOUR NOTES ARE YOUR LIFE IN THIS CLASS
Great professor! Only thing is his tests are essay test and be prepared to write everything you know.
Petty, childish, and should not be a professor.
So funny! Tests are essay so make sure you write everything you know. He does not use the textbook. He lectures, but tends to go off topic A LOT. He loves to call people out and is really petty at times. He has good stories and gives you possible essay questions before the test! I would take him again!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is very in-compassionate and does not accommodate to students with disabilities' needs. He makes the students compete by ratting each other out for points.
Essay test but provides prompts in advance. Very easy multiple choice (but only a few). Really funny. DONT miss class.
Really funny and understanding! Essay test but provides prompts in advance. Few multiple choice but very easy. DONT miss class!! 10/10 approve
Such a great class. It was project based and I was worried at first but he pushed us to do our best and provided amazing help and support. Hes not your regular history teacher and that is a good thing.
I used to hate history but he made it fun and meaningful. So funny. One of the best. Take the class and study the notes.
The class is basically you show up, takes notes, take tests, and thats it. He will lecture for how ever long the class time is and will just talk until the time hits. NOTES TO PASS!!! He doesnt use moodle, taking notes is the only way to pass. His tests are mainly essays and a few questions. TESTS ARE THE ONLY GRADES. Make sure you study hard.
I don't know how I ended up in his class but I'm glad it happened. He seems to go off on tangents but sometimes I think it is with a purpose. Anyway, take lots of notes they are your path toward and A!
He definitely has an odd and intense since of humor. He makes the material fun and is the most engaging professor at UL. I could listen to him for hours (oh wait, I did) and I could watch him for days (oh, wait, I did).
Hes good but it is totally unreasonable that he wont let you go to the bathroom during class. Im an adult and if I gotta go I gotta go. Let us relieve ourselves when needed!
Okay class. He def makes it interesting. I should be able to get full credit if I can answer essay n one paragraph. Why he makes me write pages is rank. Shorter is better bro. Lol.
I took this class as an elective and so glad I did. Cariker knows how to make a group project work. I was worried but all his planning and ideas cme totether in the end. I really enjoyed it. Not a regular history class but this is so interesting. Follow his instructions and meet whi him regularllyu .
Hes got an strange since of humor and can seem aloof but he offers a lot of insights that really makes me want to learn more history. Three tests including the final and no quizzes or papers. He takes attendance with a photo. Not a fan of that.
This was my second attempt at passing this class. The first time I had the most boring professor at UL and this time I had one of the best. I wish I went to a school where there were more professors who were passionate and enthusiastic about teaching us. There are too many who are boring and full of themselves. Dr. Cariker is great. Take notes
I can't beleive how much I enjoyed his class. It isn't difficult but it is fun. he makes it fun for sure but you learn too. he shows how history is connected to current things and even down to the personal level. so I may take another history class but even if not this one is great. so take him is what i recommend.
I cant believe Im saying this, but Im going to take another history class next semester because Carrikers was so good. Always hated history but I sorta get it now. My grade wasnt very good but it was my fault for not following the study guide and I missed 6 classes. More is less in some cases.
I was reminded to write this when I saw him riding a scooter down Johnston Str et. Hs a gem. Seems like as grad students we have terrible options. Carriker is really good but seems on the outside of dept politics. So we dont hear as much as we should.
I heard he was great. Got in class and hes already sent hilarious history memes before the semester has even begun. Who does that? I cant wait.
I got a ton of sleep in my other history 101 class it was so boring. Now I dont get as much sleep but the class is awesome. He even makes history seem. Interesting
Carriker managed to make me enjoy history for the first time in my life. He is an absolute hoot. He makes history interesting and finds ways to connect his lessons to our present day. His class is 100% LECTURE and his tests are 100% essay questions, BUT he gives you all of the essay topics before the exam (even for the final)!
I dreaded taking this class because I never had an interest in it. This class was so interesting and I enjoyed being here everyday! The key to passing is attending every lecture and taking good notes. This is a point based class with the only grades being three test (two test and a final), and a few pop quizzes (but they are all open note!)
Dr. Carriker is a great professor. You can tell he knows his material very well and is very passionate about it. He goes off on tangents all the time. IF YOU WANT TO TAKE CARRIKER TAKE HIS NIGHT CLASSES. The night class is just a more lax environment and I would highly recommend it. Also he only gives like 3 tests and they are all essay tests...
Dr. Carriker is one of the best teachers i have ever had. He makes history so fun and interesting, i actually never wanted to fall asleep. He's very funny and sarcastic.
Greatest professor I ever had a class with. Truly amazing. Passionate about both making history meaningful. So many professors care first about their own research and students second, but Dr. Carriker goes above and beyond to care about his students. Love, love, love his courses.
Fully remote class, work consisted of Moodle chapter quizzes. Amazing guy all around, clearly knew his material well and very interesting guy to listen to. Very upfront and clear about how entire class was gonna work, which was greatly appreciated. 10/10 would take again
Everything is online. Zoom is not mandatory but I showed up anyway because he is such a funny and interesting guy. If you take him in the fall, you can get extra credit for volunteering in his boudin cook off. Im not into history and he made it very interesting. Hes very nice and caring. Hes very upfront about his class which is appreciated.
I was excited for this class but dreaded going by the second week. I really liked my other history classes but Carriker was biased and rude. I would suggest a different teacher. In his defense, he's pretty easy if you study. Take notes on everything he says except rants which is most of the class.
He's a good professor. He barely teaches relevant content so no need for notes. The only grades are weekly assignments (easy) after documentaries (they're interesting) and online quizzes. You do not need the textbook for this course. You can easily... access the online quiz questions (cough google cough). Easy course.
He changed his class this semester and it is much harder. There are grades from taking quizzes online that are 30 questions in 22 minutes, and then 4 in class tests based off movies you have to watch. The in class tests weren't bad, but quizzes were hard and reading it took hours. do every extra credit opp, it saved my grade. I WOULDN'T recommend
I like Professor Carrier, but not his class. The online quizzes were very difficult and book-specific. If you aren't a history major or enjoy history, I wouldn't recommend this class.
Felt like I had to walk on eggshells the whole class. It's nice having a diversity of views in the history department, but I felt was weary of stating anything politically central or left-leaning.
Mr. Carriker is very funny in class and makes class pretty fun. Although, class is not mandatory, and didn't really help when it came to your grade in the class. Your grade in the class is based on online quizzes which are 100% based on a chapter in a textbook. read a chapter, take the quiz, rinse and repeat over 15 chapters throughout the semester
Dr. Carriker himself is very blunt and sarcastic. He has extremely dry humor and can come off as a bit rude but his class is extremely straight forward. You MUST take notes to pass. He prepares you with what will be on the test which makes the class fairly easy. Just show up and take notes.
Dr. Carriker takes some getting used to. He's super nice and is actually really good at making the lectures interesting. Super big on not missing class more than three times which can make it hard because he does 8 a.m. A little getting used to the way he grades tests, but there is no homework and tests are the only grades.
Took him for a night class and let me tell you... he teaches for the WHOLE THREE HOURS. Test are literally just like 7 essay questions and youre expected to write a book about each question. only grades in the class are the test. And get ready to type or write notes the whole class, he doesnt post his slide on moodle. so skip class? you wont pass.
Doctor Carriker is lecture-heavy as he gives the students an outline to follow for each class. All of his tests were open notes so it's important to take notes in class. For the final exam, he gave all the students in the class an ultimatum. If we were satisfied with our grades in the class we could opt not to take the final and vice versa
Carriker is a good person, but I personally did not care for his class. There are no assignments, all tests. The tests were not multiple choice, they were free response, which I didn't like. You HAVE to go to class in order to pass because he does not post the notes online. The class isn't difficult but I would've rather taken a different one.
Really enjoyed Dr. Carriker's class! I'm not much of a history enjoyer, but his class was a lot of fun and one of my favorites last semester! The only things you're graded on for the whole semester are four exams, but they're very easy and he will usually go over all of the possible exam questions the day before exam day. Overall a great teacher!
I took his 3hr night class and it was my favorite. Only had 2 exams that consisted of essay questions but you could pull straight from your notes and the final was optional. He made the content interesting and easy to follow but beware the class is pure note taking. No moodle grades- just passed back papers. Was overall a chill professor.
Honestly enjoyed this class. Mr. Carriker is a very nice professor and teaches very well. He does not tolerate people on their phone or doing something else on their computer. You must take good notes. Only grades are 3-4 exams. If you study you'll get a good grade.
Very lecture-heavy and will talk the whole time. He said there was a 30-point deduction off your total point for each additional absence, but it wasn't true. There were only 2 tests and the final. Each test consisted of approximately 4 or 5 questions, all written out. Test questions were very straightforward if you took notes.
Says he will take a picture for attendance but doesn't so you can miss but I wouldn't recommend because the exams questions come straight from notes. Only 2 test and a final which consist of hand written questions about 5 each test but it had to be a certain length. Honestly not bad but wouldn't recommend if you have other classes to focus on
