I had Mr. Carter for Lecture and not for lab. He is a cool guy but not a good teacher. He is not clear on what you need to know. He quote is "WELL LOOK AT THAT LATER"
Mr. Carter is very evasive and not clear on what to study. I had him for A&P lab and he gave very hard tests! He kind of mumbles, I couldn't understand him most of the time. I hear he does better at Microbiology!
OK, carter is absolutely horrible...he really sucks...i would only suggest taking him if, oh wait i would never under any circumstance recommend taking him...he is a horrible teacher...he makes his tests about 1,000 times harder than what they should be...I have not learned a single thing in his class.
Mr. Carter is a very smart man. I believe he is a little too smart sometimes. He describes things on a very high level and it is very hard to understand. He is willing to help you whenever you need it, but I have heard Mann is the best from many many people. He isn't aweful, but not my first choice. Tests are VERY HARD, but guess what. It's A&P!
If you actually study in his class, there is no reason you won't get an A.
To the person that said if you actually study in his class and you'll get an A .. is lieing to you. Mr. Carter is a great person but a hard teacher. I don't have my M.D or PH.D there for I'm not suppose to know all the thinngs HE does.. so please treat me like a college student and not a DR. I'm learning here.
I have had a great experience in Dr.Carter's class. He is totally accessible. I have had few professors who have gone out of their way like Dr. Carter to assist students.
His fellow teachers call him "Einstein" (Cornell grad.) Course was a difficult one to begin with and he's a biochemist! If the subject is non-microscopic, he doesnt want to know. But he is a good teacher and at least APPEARS to care about the students. I learned A LOT from him and DO RECOMMEND him if you want to learn A + P, a really tough course.
Dr. Carter is a really great teacher. No, this is not an easy A but for those students who actually want to learn something he is the best. This is A&P so it isn't supposed to be easy..you are going into a medical field! He offers a lot of bonus to help you succeed!!!
Excellent!!!
I found Dr. Carter to be an excellent teacher. His class was challenging but it is challenging for a reason. Prospective medical students NEED to know this stuff. I work a full time job and I made an A in the class because I applied myself and put forth the required effort.
Dr. Carter is a HORRIBLE teacher!! Never take him. Never. On our second test, everyone got 20s and 30s on it and he yelled at the class like it was our fault. He tried to cram over 50 pgs of notes in for the final in only 2 weeks. His tests are so confusing and he re-words everything. I would never recommend him to anyone!
I liked Dr. Carter. He seems nice and intelligent, but I felt like my time could have been spent more wisely staying home and reviewing the chapter myself. I found his tests difficult and his class boring. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN CHOOSE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!
I took Dr. Carter for A&P lab. Dr. Carter will work with you if you ask. He wants you to learn and succeed. He is hard but A&P 2010 is not easy. I would take another class he teaches if I needed it. Maybe Microbiology...
Dr. Carter is about the smartest man on the block. People will complain that he talks over your head, but the thing is that he expects you to know a certain level of material. If you don't, well...thats not his problem. Good class. Good teacher. If you study you will make and "A". He tells you everything you need to know.
I took Dr. Carter for 2010 and 2020 and got an A both times. His intellegence is way beyond our level but he gives you the exact notes for what he will test you on. You don't even need to pay attention in class if you will just study the notes.
Increases the level of competence towards graduate level.
I liked Dr. Carter...he is very easy to talk to and very good at explaining a scenario several different ways.
Dr. Carter is a very good teacher. He lets you know exactly what will be on the test. You do have to study pretty hard for each test though. He gives hard tests, but always 12-15 bonus points for each. Outlines allow students to follow along in class with ease.
I took him for gen. biol. 1 lecture and lab. Hes a very helpful teacher when it comes to the material, since he gives you an outline of the lecture, practice exams and many other useful resources. hes pretty awesome and makes biology seem pretty interesting.
He is a very smart teacher, but very HARD! His teaching and vocabulary was on way different level than mine. If your looking for a CHALLENGE then take him. Test are HORRIBLE!
He is a very smart teacher, but very HARD! I had him spring 09.His teaching and vocabulary was on way different level than mine. If your looking for a CHALLENGE then take him. Test are HORRIBLE!
makes everything very complicated
In any A&P class you will work hard. This was no exception. You will need to read the material before the lecture to be able to keep up with him. But, If you do your work he is GREAT at deciphering complicated info. Study the class objectives and you will do well in his class.
GREAT professor! Highly recommend him! His tests are really hard, so be prepared to study EVERY night! He offers extra credit on everything, and it will really help "cushion" your grade. He explains everything very clearly. Always willing to help!
needs to stick to biochemistry!
very hard class. expects you to study at least six hours a day outside of class
very class, long tests, and a lot of work required. He expects you to study six hours a day outside of class
He was HORRIBLE!! At the beginning of the class there were 30 students, at the end of the semester there were 8. That should tell him something. I have never had such as awful experience with any professor in my life.
I FEEL SORRY FOR THE PEOPLE WHO TAKE HIS CLASS.THATS ALL I'M GOING TO SAY! BE WARNED!
be prepared to spend all your free time studying... his tests are extremely difficult and he wasn't much help.
He loves the subject but he teaches like he is teaching people at his level. (in a general Bio class)
His class requires you to critically think. If you are entering the medical field this is crucial and will prepare you for classes yet to be taken. He is a visual teacher. He told us the first day of class that we should commit the pictures to memory. By doing this, you should be able to pass his tests. His class prepared me for getting my RN.
This teacher is terible. I couldnt agree more with the other student that said he teaches like we're on his level. Not helpful at all. I went to office hours one day and be be-littled me and talked to me like I was an idiot. terible person and teacher.
You will have to study. Hard. But he's awesome.
Very hard teacher. Not helpful at all. Expects way to much from students. I never had a college experience that was bad until him. Most awful teacher ive ever had.
Do not recommend him! Not helpful and is not clear in the material he teaches. Very hard grader and is not easy to talk to
I was a little nervous after reading all of the posts, but I have really enjoyed the class. It has been a lot of work, especially being during the summer. I really did not find him too difficult though and he gives every opportunity in the world for helping your grade by curving tests and dropping some of your lowest scores. Definitely recommend
Professor Carter is an amazing teacher. He is always willingly to help - by email, office hours, during class, etc. Do not take his class unless you are actually willingly to put in the work. Given that this is a biology class you can expect to do a lot of reading. Be sure to read before each lecture and attend all review sessions.
Dr. Carter is VERY difficult and honestly not a very good teacher. He expects you to know most of the material already and kind of makes fun of you if you don't know the answer. I do not recommend taking him unless you are incredible already at biology.
I had dr. carter for general biology lecture and lab, and let me tell you i worked for my grade. Our class started at 20 students and dropped to 10 by spring break....but i ended up passing with a B. I did devote many hours to studying because he isnt clear on what he wants a lot of the time so you just have to know it backwards and forwards. If you show that youre trying and go to study sessions he will see the effort. I feel better prepared for micro and im thankful :)
He is a difficult teacher but his class will prepare you for anything related to biology or medical studies. He's very passionate about his work so he does get lost. Just try to learn his language and schedule times to meet with him. He has a life too and people shouldn't expect him to drop everything for them. The challenge has taught me a lot.
He teaches on a graduate level. He's very confusing. When you ask questions, he'll say he will get to it later and never does. Test are extremely difficult and confusing. If you don't use his terminology on test it's marked wrong. If he makes a mistake on the test, he only gives credit to the person who found it. NEVER TAKE HIM!!!
Been in school many years & this is the worst prof. I've ever had. He teaches on a level way above everyone else & is quick to point out his favorites are the ones that come to his reviews which are held during times that other students have class or work. Even if he tells you that your work looks great before turning it in, he will give you a D.
This class is what a college class should be. It was very challenging but Dr. Carter gives you so many opportunities to dive into the hard topics. Take the time to do the homework and look at the extra links he posts, they really help. He gives A LOT of extra points on every test. Just make sure not to fall behind, it's a lot of information.
Dr. Carter is rude and quite frankly not a very good teacher. I'm not sure where his exam questions come from, but I'm pretty sure they weren't in lectures. I didn't miss any lectures.
Arrogant, pompous and condescending, be prepared to be called stupid. Extremely disorganized, and the lectures jump around and ramble. I had to take 1110 at Nashville State and transfer it in.
I unfortunately took Robert Carter my freshman year first semester. Oh boy! What a mistake! He is extremely hard and it is so much homework however,if you keep up you'll do fine. He is extremely specific on terminology on his tests. Don't even think about skipping study sessions or office hours. ANNOY HIM! I learned so much. It is worth the tears!
very rude
This class in itself is a difficult class. Dr. Carter isn't going to make it any easier. He takes everything down to the molecular level and expects you to be able to do the same. On tests and quizzes, if you answer the question correctly but not the way he wants you to answer it, he WILL take off points and won't provide very clear feedback.
Even going to every SI session couldn't help me in this class! He is a VERY tough grader and doesn't really provide clear feedback on why you missed what you did. You can go to his office for help, but he's still not very clear and he makes you feel very dumb. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Dr. Carter is a tough professor but he is willing to help you get the grade you want. He provides tons of outside resources for help and is always available via e-mail, phone, and office hours. If you don't plan on reading the textbook or putting in adequate study time than you won't do well in his class.
If you don't plan on attending every day, I would not recommend this class. It is tough but if you spend a lot and I mean a lot of time studying you will do fine. He gives good outlines, power points, and even animations for you to use to help you study and is always available to help you understand.
avoid this professor if you can.
Absolutely can not break anything down into a way where you can understand it if you have not had any upper level science classes. He is very smart, but would be a better teacher for graduate school because if you don't already have a background you are going to struggle tremendously.
Professor Carter is far and away one of the worst teachers I've had. He teaches an introductory course at a graduate level. The homework assignments take about 2 hours, so don't plan on having a job and finishing all of the assignments. But, he is very understanding about things and really wants you to pass. Give him a chance, but be ready to work.
His way of teaching is very complex. He does not break it down for you and his tests were always more complicated then they needed to be. Other professors at Vol state teach this subject on a much simpler level to understand. Let's put it this way, over half of our class failed.
I knew this professor was going to be tough because he called me during Christmas break to warn me how difficult his class was going to be.. Weird right? Had to drop his class despite my 4.0. Questions were too hard, and he rushes you to finish fast. He is NOT helpful. I went to him for help on a lab report & he told me it was good-still got a 76.
Ask question in class, be involved, don't be afraid to ask or you won't learn. What he spends alot of time explaining in class is going to be the essay questions on the test. If you do the homework and watch the animations you will do fine on the test. You have to study, this isn't a high school course.
He doesn't teach. He stands up there and reads off a PowerPoint. He expects you to already know everything when you enter his class. No consideration. Rude. Hard. Do not take him.
Dr. Carter is an incredibly smart man and expects you to rise to his level. Isn't that the point of teaching? To teach? He is incredibly tough but fair. If you can demonstrate knowledge of the information you will do well. You HAVE TO STUDY. Read the textbook, do the homework, ask questions. This is college people, no one us going to hand it to you
In order to pass the class, you must understand his high level university lingo (there is no such thing as dumbing it down). When you ask him to explain, he only makes it more difficult to understand.
Tough teacher. Doesn't help you out at all, just makes you feel more stupid. Talks as if you've already learned everything even if he hasn't taught it. You pretty much have to teach yourself.
Dr. Carter runs a ridiculously tough class. If you have a job, I would highly suggest taking a break for his class. Not afraid to call people out on their mistakes or embarrass someone for saying something "stupid". I wouldn't recommend taking his class.
The "Top 20 Tags" are 100% right! He is by far one of the toughest graders I've ever had and you cannot miss more than one or two classes unless you want to fail. I love biology and its my major so I thought this class wouldn't be too bad-I was wrong. I even thought about changing my major bc of him. BUT HE DOES DROP LOWEST GRADE IN EACH CATEGORY!!
I love everything science related and saying that he "loves" science is an understatement, which is refreshing. This comes with a draw back though; he gets lost in what he says and it gets pretty hard to understand what he's teaching. It's probably the hardest class I've ever taken. Definitely take the class but you may want to rethink what prof.
Carter is by far one of the hardest professors Ive ever taken! He is very rude and never gives good feedback.
I have never had a college professor give a class so much opportunity to do well in a class. Most people who do terrible in this class must simply not be trying. Test material is difficult, but he gives test review questions WITH the answers provided to study with. He is also very generous with bonus pts. Ask questions, read, go to class, get an A.
Very generous with bonus points, and thorough study guides. It's a tough class but he really does everything he can to help you succeed. Going to office hours and open labs will really help. Put in the work and you will be fine.
He gives you study guides that are not helpful because most of what is on them is not on the test. He does not explain things very well in lecture. He is definitely a better teacher in lab. He will call your name out in class and ask particularly students questions and he expects you to know them, so be prepared always. He gives unexpected quizzes.
Hes very rude! Calls you out in front of everybody on all your mistakes. Also expects you to already know the material. Wouldnt recommend taking him. If hes the only option wait and take it another semester!!!
He talks way above students skill level but is really knowledgeable about a&p. Sometimes when you ask questions his answers won't be very direct and tend to be confusing. Also the study guides for the test don't actually contain anything on the test so that's annoying. Overall he was a decent teacher though just the class is really hard.
This has been my favorite A&P class EVER. I've struggled in the past with having horrible professors to withdrawing the class before, but Dr. Carter has been the best yet. His class is difficult (like all A&P classes), but he makes it very manageable. Make sure to do your readings and even work ahead whenever you can. He's always willing to help.
Professor Carter is very knowledgeable in his study, but his teaching methods aren't the greatest. He's amazing at beating around the Bush when it comes to asking questions, he never fully helps you to understand what's actually going on. He called a few students out on not doing too great, which I find very unprofessional.
Single worst professor I've had in my college career. His one and only goal during class is to show the class how smart he thinks he is. I honestly don't understand how this man still has a job.
Read chapter(s) before class .. which you should in the first place He expects you to know already what he is teaching but does not get on the learners level. For those that have not learned chemistry, it is hard to follow. when he asks a question he expects you to know the question or where he is at with the question. very deep study do not recom
Professor Carter was by far the worst professor I have ever had. He seems like he wants to help you out but in reality he's just condescending and will point out your wrongs instead of helping. Yeah he fixed missed homework grades but his tests and exams are near impossible to pass. Would never recommend him!!!
He is covering some extremely difficult material but I felt he did a very good job of explaining and putting everything together during lecture. If you study (really study), you will do well. His study materials are spot on for what is on the tests. Hard, but I really feel like I know my stuff.
You can be really intimidated by him. The lectures go by really fast. He thinks you are supposed to know everything he says. Says he will help you, but really will point out your mistakes in front of the whole class.
Alot of people bust on Mr. Carter, but he is an amazing professor. He is very smart in his profession and makes content clear as day. I wouldn't skip lecture because he GIVES YOU TEST ANSWERS IN CLASS. If you stay some what caught up on your readings, go to lecture, and do your assignments you will get an easy A. He gives a ton of extra credit.
He is tough but his lectures are amazing and if you attend class and take notes you will do well. He explains what he teaches and gives you analogys and references. What he teaches in class is on the exam. He is super organized and you always know where you are! He is a true professor.
Anatomy is a hard class, but Dr. Carter is a good professor. Just pay attention in lecture, read the lecture outlines, and do the homework and you will be fine.
Dr. Carter is a great man, but his tests do not match up with his lectures. You really have to think outside of the box in order to pass his tests with a good grade. Very difficult, but his labs are so much more focused and he gives all the materials you need to know on ELearn. I do not recommend skipping class.
Dr. Carter is always willing to help. If you visit his office hours he's gonna be more willing to work with you. His lectures are not the best, and you need to know it all for the lecture exams. Lab is ALOT easier & all materials you need are on Elearn for lab. Lecture... not so much. Watch the videos he posts & take your time on homework.
I dont want to totally bash him but he talks way above our knowledge level but I honestly gave up on this class at the beginning of the semester and got a D I dont know how but he is very smart, if I ever decide to retake it I am definitely going to take a different professor ALSO my friends had other professors and there work load was way less
HORRIBLE! talks above level of understanding. no study guide. lots of reading. quiz every week in lab. tests never have anything to do with the lecture. lots of essay questions. short time limits.
I am currently in his class and I love having Dr. Carter! It's tough material, but fascinating, so don't expect it to be easy. It's worth it, though. Do not use your review questions as a crutch! Make sure you understand the processes inside and out and you'll be fine. He wants you to learn and not just memorize, because we will need to know this.
Terrible just terrible do not take.
Honestly if hes the only biology teacher left when signing up, if it is not your strong suit reconsider taking this class another semester. It is extremely difficult, what he teaches vs the study vs the test are completely different.
It's a tough class but doable if you put forth effort. A &P is a very difficult course no matter who teaches it, however Professor Carter made it understandable. He curve graded in my class and gave extra credit for attendance. I took this class online due to Covid but the professor still made himself very available to meet personally over zoom.
It was really frustrating that every time i asked for a concrete answer about how my grade was calculated, he couldnt tell me. He curves tests a lot (nice!), but I am still in the dark about how my final grade was calculated because he wouldnt respond to my email. Would not recommend. i have never made below a B in college and this is my 2nd degree
A&P is very hard, I don't blame him for how difficult some of the material was. Pay attention in class, he gives exam answers. Tons of extra credit on exams and is always willing to meet for office hours. He wants you to pass, but you have to work for it. He did talk about many things irrelevant to exams, which got a little confusing sometimes.
Do not recommend Dr. Carter! He came off as a good prof and I was very excited for this class. Now we are 3 weeks in and if it wasn't for my degree I would drop the class. If you choose to take this class best of luck to you. Science has always been my strong suit but apparently not anymore.
Professor Carter was an amazing teacher! He honestly did the best he could with the class being online & reminded us every class that he always had office hours. I didn't realize that this class would be as hard as it was, but if you put in the time & effort you will pass! Plus, he gives extra credit!! That honestly helped my grade so much.
ive never been good or bad with science, kinda in the middle but this teacher is the WORST teacher ive ever had. He makes you feel stupid and doesnt teach the topics well at all so your left with having to teach the topic to yourself. Everyone in the class is failing the quizzes and test. IF YOU GET HIM TRY SWITCHING TEACHERS IMMEDIATELY.
Hes a very smart professor, unfortunately he is very confusing. He expects you to study on your own a lot and you basically end up teaching it yourself. I study for hours and still make poor grades. I highly dont recommend him half of the class is failing. A&P is already hard and he makes it harder than what its supposed to be.
Carter is hard. Lab quizzes and lecture exams ON THE SAME DAY. Homework is easy however the homework is not a big part of the overall grade. If you end up missing an exam or a quiz, 9 times out of 10 he will not let you make it up. He is very cocky and condescending. We have spent 11 weeks talking about cells and I don't think we will stop by Dec.
Carter is very knowledgeable however most of his lectures were very confusing and when you get lost once it is nearly impossible to come back from it. This course requires lots of studying and even learning a few topics on your own through "Self Study". I do believe this class is hard on its own, but this instructor did not make it easier.
If you are taking A&P, you are most likely going into health sciences and you will have board exams at the end of your college/clinical journey. It is a hard class with a ton of information, Dr. Carter presents it thoroughly and with humor. There are assignments and labs and you have to study but it's the material and a sophomore-level class.
Dr. Carter is tough but he has good ways to explain material and makes it easier to understand once you start to get his style. OUTLINES will save your life in this class and are always very detailed. Wish he taught AP 2!
There's a lot to say, first of all, DONT TAKE HIM! I LOVE anatomy and have a decent understanding of it but he made it over complicated. He says he "teaches in stories" but the stories make NO sense. Even if you ask simple questions there is still no hope for you. Most people I know are failing currently or were failing.
I cringe when I hear his name. If you get him, talk to your advisor immediately.
Professor Carter is probably the toughest professor I have come across. His class is lecture-heavy, he is very hard to follow, he constantly mentions what you should remember from high school, and if you don't understand something then your left to his office hours or youtube. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM if you can avoid it.
Very difficult professor. Extremely exam heavy. If you even slightly value your GPA, do not even consider.
I didn't enjoy my time in class, and many times prof would lecture as if he was just reading off a sheet of paper and it never seemed like he took much interest in the content. The exams come with plenty of extra credit which is great plus, but most of the time many of the things on the test weren't brought up in lecture so, self study is a must.
Be prepared for this class if you take him. Quizzes every week for lab. He says at the beginning of the semester that lab and lecture go together, but they don't. In lecture he is all over the place. He makes a hard class even harder. Homework due every few days with 60+ questions. Most of this course is a self study course.
Lecture and Lab were tolerable. His exams were very different than his review questions. He expects alot of reading, pretty much 12 hours a week just reading. The homework assignments were very helpful and were factored in to the final grade. I would not take him again just because of his teaching style
I don't recommend taking this class with any professor if you are not willing to do the work it takes. It is tough class but achieveable. Overall, Dr.Carter is a hard professor, but he makes it very clear that he is there to help you. He curves every test by at least 10 points. If you don't put in the work it takes, don't expect a good grade.
he int really helpful the most he does is just go in depth on his slides that he already has open on his course. He only offers help if its outside of class time or he offers zoom call. He rushes through topic if he doesn't have time, because he rather stick to HIS time schedule rather then wait till next class time to properly go over his slides.
Carter expects you to know the material before class. He is very heavy on going to office hours as its part of your grade. But even then, when you go you feel rushed to get in and out. Though I do agree he gives you a lot of resources it is hard to reach out to him for direct teaching as he wants you to exhaust all other options before going to him
Great teacher, you have to try in order to do well. He is very fair at grading and he makes sure you have all the materials you need to succeed, you just need to do the work. If you don't want to read or take notes outside of class you will not do well.
AVOID HIM! He breaks the rules of what the biology department says. He teaches stuff that is not required anymore and not important. He skips 3/4 of the slides and talks about the most random stuff ever. He curves the test, so we don't fail because he does not prepare us. Take someone else if you care about your mental health. Report to the dean!!!
This professor encouraged office hours but wasn't helpful via email, making it hard for shy students to get support. Lectures were rushed, expectations unclear, and prior knowledge was assumed. Homework was excessive, with 60+ questions weekly. Exam retakes were only offered at times that conflicted with other classes. Overall, not supportive.
Tough class but helpful resources. Lots of self-study required. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for exam prep alongside the textbook. Professor is strict but fair with curves.
Don't even know where to begin. His lectures don't make any sense, the quizzes and test don't reflect the lectures. I caught the flu really bad and when I asked for help catching up he embarrassed me in front of my classmates bc I didn't know what we were talking about in the lab that I had later that day (again, 1 day back recovering a 103 fever)
absolutely awful. Someone was 1 minute late, embarrassed him in front of everyone by basically telling him he couldn't take the quiz. Then said see me after class. Power trip much? Unless you have the time to study your text book front and back do not take his course. He makes 0 sense during his lectures. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! half of mine failed.
Originally, I was really hard on this professor. I felt overwhelmed with the amount of material/resources given. However, it ended up being fairly helpful. His exams are super hard, averages are low, but then he “curves” them. Only real issue I had overall was his labs. We did minimal to no hands-on learning aside from dissections.
I took this profeesor for A&P 1 and it completely ruined my first semester of college. I understand Anatomy is a hard course to take but the notes we were given to study was not on any exam. Lectures made absolutely no sense. I am currently in a&p 1 again and am making an A.
Prior knowledge is almost required to succeed. He is a smart Professor and teaches students as if they are on his level of understanding. Lectures can get overwhelming. Questions are met with a demeaning response that may or may not be an actual answer. Do not take him if you cannot dedicate time weekly to study these concepts.
Listen... this is a tough class. However, it is not as bad as everyone says. If you devote time to studying each week and spend time with the material, you will be fine. If you are lazy, you will fail. He is a good teacher, but I will say he has an attitude and can be kinda snarky sometimes.
He expects you to already know what he is talking about and does not answer questions when you ask. The exams look nothing like the outlines or review questions he provides. There is no hands on activities in lab, he does everything. He talks too fast for you to grasp what he is saying to write it down. I do not recommend this teacher.
He provided a lot of resources to help us learn, but made things extremely difficult. The exams were far more difficult than necessary. This is coming from someone who got an A in his class.
Overall, a tough class; review materials don't set you up for success when it comes to tests. He will say the review materials/homework look like the test, but they don't. Very wordy/confusing phrasing of questions, making it harder than I feel it needs to be. Prior knowledge is required in order to do well.
