Everything is essay. If you don't like essays tests, don't take this class. He kind of jumps from subject to subject.
Very friendly, but strict. Lots of essays (1 per week) and essay tests. Not very clear, but will help you outside of class all you want.
If you like theory on history, then I highly recommend him. Every test is are short essay tests, and all assignments are 2 page papers. Even though it's kind of hard, he makes history interesting. He also is very available to help you out. Funny too.
You'll enjoy his lectures if you're a history buff; pretty tough class because of all the writing.
History 2. good class. learned a lot. Challengeing but good class. He loves essays! Lots of essays. essay tests.
Very hard teacher. Strict course outinles per day, lots of key terms and no study guides for 3 exams. Exams are all essay, and essays are due every week. Robert is also very sarcastic and has a high dropout rate

Great professor... makes class interesting with good examples & corny jokes... Favorite course so far at UCF
The class is boring. An outline per day and talks n talks about the keyterms. 3 tests and papers due each week. I love the class. tests are 9 questions n u choose 6 to answer in a paragraph. I recomend him if u dont mind essays.
Tests werent really easy but if you go to class and study the night before you'll get an A.
He assigns a lot of work and boring reading, but he's fun to listen to in class. He's a really easy grader. Be careful though, cause he doesn't stick to his syllabus.
Assignments can be a little vague at times but he is willing to explain and clarify when asked. Tests were all essay.
Class not structured well. For the most part he lectures the whole time with no regard to if the class comprehends the material. Tests consist of Essays, 1 five paragraph, and 2 short answer. Questions can be misleading, and it is very easy not to fully c
He is a really good teacher, he lectures the whole class but if you actually listen to him you don't need to review much later on. He makes jokes..and he is willing to talk to you if you have any problems. He likes essays a lot, and he's fair with grading
He seems to know what he is talking about, but you end up writing tons of notes. If your a visual learner don't take this class. There are four papers and tests are all essays. So be prepared to write. He is a fair grader though and seems helpful.
This is the first time I gave a sh!t about history - he made it seem important. Very effective lectures. I loved this class and highly recommend it!
For upper level history classes he assigns a 3-page paper every week, and we had 4 books/novels, a couple videos and lectures we had to work on too much work!
The due dates on many of the Assignments were unclear. He also returns papers back with no comments on the paper and gives you a B or C. The final is optional but common sense would show that taking the final is the only way to even get close to an A
If you really want to learn the subject and become an intelligent individual then take Cassanello. If you're a slacker and want something for nothing or not willing to put any effort into anything then you need to become a college dropout. You'll feel like a historian after you've taken Cassanello!
The only way you can possibly fail his class is to not do any of the work. There are quite a few assignments but they really arent hard. To pass all you have to do is go to class, take notes, and do the papers. This is the only professor I have taken multiple classes with, I got an A both times.
History & Historians was overly difficult, boring and useless for someone not doing graduate work or research in history. The class is required for History majors, but there are better profs to take it with (Fon and Downing, among others). The readings start terrible and get worse. Avoid if you can!
Definately a skilled prof. He really knows his stuff, but this makes the assignments harder on you. He grades essays harshly, but fair. If you read his rubrics, and do all he asks you will do well. If not, death will result.
Much is expected and much is required in this course. There are other Professors that do not require the amount of work that he does. The books are difficult, especially Iggers book. The quizzes are not that hard. He is a tough grader on the essays! Internet class so do not know teaching style.
K guys heres the breakdown: Do not take this class if: 1-You are just trying to finish GEP courses and arent a history major-the LAST thing you need is incessant busy work! 2-You are expecting a fairly decent class...the work load is designed to 'further your learning'. Get O'Shea, fair/easy,no mess
FIRST TEST- class average 45%. This man is horrible. I am a very good history student, and on the first test i recieved a 23%. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He says jokes about he doesn't care about students, but they are all the truth. Complete jerk!
Cassenello's class: makes you stay until the last possible second. His tests are rediculously hard and unpredictable on random, useless information. All essay. If you arent into writing or dealing with a cynical, cold teacher, dont take him.
I just can't say enough BAD stuff about this dude. All of the negatives reviews are correct! If you can, pick a different professor, one who will treat you with courtesy and respect. JERK.

I see why people say he is hard, because he is.On the other hand I have learned many things from this class. I am appreciative of the brutally hard work and tough grading that he has given. He is not for the faint of heart but will make you earn your grade and learn.always was avaliable to help me.
I think that Cassanello is an interesting man, but he's a bad pick for someone taking History & Historians to graduate (i.e. 90 % of the class). Bailer is easier and fairer, though her lectures are just as dull. Fon is better, Walker, etc. Assigned readings prove the decline of the field.
He is ruthless grading his essays. For anyone who says his online quizes are hard,if you do the study guide you will pass the quiz. His specialty is Southern history, specifically African American, he knows his stuff and is generally a good guy. Anyone who is use to getting A's on writing assignment think again.
History and Historians with this professor is a absolute NIGHTMARE!!! What he is attempting to teach is good, if you plan to become a actual "historian". If not run screaming in the other direction if he is the only one teaching this course
it looks like there are many people that can't hack a tough course...
Looks to me like some people couldn't stand a tough course. If you're half a student, you will do well. I got straight A's on all of the papers. The only reason this class will be difficult is if you're a very poor writer.
Was not as bad as I had heard. Dry sense of humor, but class was interesting and fair paced. I would definetly take him again. Grades papers pretty hard but quizes and tests were easy.
Alright in fairness it was an online class, but even when I went and sat down with him he was very unhelpful. He didn't care about the student at all. This class was a real nightmare and he is again very unhelpful and his assignments are a bit unclear.

Instructor was entirely unwilling to answer students email. This student had to email instructor 5 times asking same question--instructor never answered question!! Is not interested in helping student. If you are able to take a course without any clarification from instructor you'll do fine-- if not, stay away.
Prof. is a good online teacher & the course is well paced. Writing a paper per week was pretty wearisome. He isn't looking for correct answers per say, but good composition!! He takes his job seriously all of my e-mails were promptly responded to. He is also willing to meet with students on campus for "study group". This was helpful for me.
People who think this class is too difficult shouldn't be in college. any reputable university would require a class like this, and anyone not prepared to study hard and take the papers seriously deserve to do poorly. i got a 100% on my final paper, and if you aren't lazy so should you. people complain about cassanello. ha! dr friend was a nitemare
If you are hoping for an easy class, prepare to be disappointed. However, if you prefer writing essays as opposed to taking tests, you'll love the course. There's copious amounts of reading and copious essay writing. Don't take the course if you don't have lots of time to dedicate to it.
Like the others said. There is lots of writing. I'm not a good writer, but if you write about the topic he chooses, read the books and write clear, analytical papers, you should be alright.
Quite the jerk. Took His&Historians online and got a B+. He would give assignments with such ambiguous wording that no one got them "right." Held us to ridiculous and inane expectations, then graded everyone down. Email him only if you want to get into a long-winded argument that you lose even if you are right. This guy needs to be chucked.
Worse "teacher" I've had. Just doesn't seem that interested in teaching or in the students in his class. I'm trying to think of something good to say. Can't find it, though.
he talks too much about his cat....
Worst professor I've ever had in my life. He can't give proper instructions for anything. He's unclear and strict. His grading system is too harsh. He thinks we're all professional writers. He expects too much from us as if we have nothing else to do but his ridiculous papers. Overall, don’t take him, he’ll make your educational record plummet
If you want to work hard, take this class. Don't take this class if you are NOT a history major! He always answered my emails or questions I had, and I did very well in his class. LOTS of reading and a big final paper, but you have to WORK HARD to get the grade with him! Intelligent man, but makes you work!
I recieved an A in this class, though I worked hard for it. He is extremely helpful, and if you are a history major, I would take this course, because your writing will go to another level. I love this man.
Cassanello is fickle, yes, but he always answered my emails in a timely manner, plus he is always available on campus or any of the IM(Yahoo!, AOL, or MSN) everyday during certain times. I learned lots about writing from him and yes it is not an easy A. Shouldn't be anyway.
If you enjoy doing work take this class, if not that don't bother. He thinks he's your only teacher and that you have no life to assign these rediculous off the wall assignments that don't mean anything. Granted, you do learn how to write better. He grades all your papers with a harsh eye! Don't recommend him.
Dr. Cassanello's class was one of the hardest classes that I have ever taken, but what I learned from his class has made all of my other courses sooo much easier. I took his online course for fall 07. Some reviews have said "He's unclear with his directions". He does this for a reason. You need to have your own ideas, he can't hold your hand.
If you're not a history major, don't take this class. If you are a history major but suck at writing, don't take this class (and change your major while you're at it). I got 100s on every assignment, even though I did the reading and the writing only a few hours before it was due. Tough grader, but if you can write, you will be fine.
Don't take him. His directions are very unclear and he's a jerk about things when you email him. He replies back quick though. He grades tough and you have to know what you're doing and talking about. Don't take his class esp. if you're not a history major!
Tough but fair. Your citations need to be in order or you will pay the price!
If you're a history major and you don't do well in this class...give up your major. This class is easy for good writers, and will make you even better. I really, really enjoyed the assignments for this class, and I got a 100 on the final 10-page paper. If I could take it again, I would.
Dr. Cassanello is a very tough professor but a very good one. He knows his history & expects from his students exactly what expects from himself, which is dedication and hard work. You will be a better student after taking his class. Plus, I think there is something very sexy about his confidence and attitude.
Dr Cassanello is not for the faint of heart. However...I started the semester prepared to hate him and by the end of the semester I loved him! If you like history and want to be a better writer take him, if not take someone easier. He was even kind enough to write me a nice letter of recommendation. I highly recommend this professor-dont let other
Run from this guy! His online class is super hard and requires a lot of reading. If you don't have a life then sure, go ahead, otherwise, steer clear and take someone else.
This online class is the worst history class I have ever taken. Horribly boring lectures that focus on vocab and insignificant aspects from the subject. Tedious papers, difficult quizzes, midterm, final, massive amounts of reading & vocab. Class is a waste of money and massive waste of time. I feel like I have learned nothing. Take someone else!!!!
Had him for Frontier FL history online. It was straightforward. Had to listen to lectures through iTunes and read books, take quizzes on them, and write papers. There was a midterm and final exam. Both were easy because I took good notes from the lectures. If you follow the grading rubric and actually do the readings, you will do well in this class
This class has taught me how to write history papers correctly. The prof. sets high standards, but u will learn a lot if you follow his guidelines. If u expect a super easy class, then take someone else... or change ur major. The prof. responds quickly to emails (usually within the hour) & provides appropriate feedback. I'd take his class again!
Yes the instructor responds quickly to emails. But Casanello is a critic, not a teacher. For example, he will tell u what's wrong with your paper, but he won't tell you what u can do to fix it. So you will have to find that out on your own. Anybody can be a critic, now if you would only teach me! Take someone else.
Horrible instructor with super boring lectures. Makes you want to poke your eyes out and I retained little from the class. Take someone else!
i did not do well in his class, that being said it was not his fault, you need to have the TIME to devote to this class, not for single working mothers like myself. the books he assigned were amazing and insightful. if you really enjoy history and have TIME take his class.
I had to drop his Frontier Florida summer class because the workload was just way too much for someone with a job and family to handle. The books were very interesting and I may read them anyway! He seems like a great professor .. but you have to have a lot of time to devote to the class.
I'm a History Major. I live for History. I'm extremely smart and carry a 3.8% GPA. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH CASSANELLO. I studied 30-40 hours per week in this class and barley squeak c's . The questions on exams are arbitrary - total opinions. Read 5 books, write 8 papers and take 2 of the craziest exams ever! WORST PROFESSOR AT UCF!!!!!!!!!
I was terrified to take Dr. Cassanello's class. The negative comments on here however proved to be unfounding. He provides all the materials and instructions to succeed in his class. If I can make A's while juggling 4 other intense classes and my being a mediocre writer, you can too it just requires EFFORT. I would highly reccomend Dr. Cassanello.
Took it online. Lessons were very well structured and communicated the material well. He was very helpful, clear and provided good feedback. The class was equivalent to a 9 hr course. Hard, but you'll learn a lot about history as a discipline and how to write correctly. Take it if you know you'll have the time and want an excellent professor.
Was scared of this class because of the ratings of other students. It is a lot of work, but if you do what he says there's no reason why you can't get a passing grade. He keeps the online course organized and you always know what to expect because he outlines it all for you. If you do the readings you should be fine!
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! Terrible teacher! no sympathy and doesn't care AT ALL whether you pass or not.
Took this course online & very impressed with how straight forward and organized Dr. Cassanello is. Difficult course, but you will learn from him. Class consists of many short papers & an end of term paper that's considerably longer, but that it! It's easy to pass if you do the work. Great communicator & very fair. Will definitely take him again!
hard but not boring. This class is informing , you will learn alot. Im taking him again for my last semester. I would recommend him.
I really respect Cassanello as a teacher, you will learn a lot. The course will take up the majority of your week, a 3-5 page paper is due every Friday and quiz. An A or B is definitely duable. As a person, I do not respect him. He is a critic. He sent out condescending emails to the class repeatedly. He thinks very highly of himself and noone else
Online course, very well laid out, sometimes little problems understand what he want's. Condescending, he does put all the answers in his papers, but you have to search for the way to do it. Example: Sum up the article and the newpapers stories and make sure you use footnotes to link to it. But on different page is it needs to be 2 to 3 pages.
Class requires alot of work. Took class as an online component. six papers, six quizzes, midterm and a final. not terribly hard course material, somewhat interesting, but somewhat difficult getting used to his ways.
This is one of the best online classes I have ever taken. He has a mixture of reading and lectures that are interesting. I got a hard earned "B" in the class. All that being said, Dr. Cassanello is not helpful, he has no sympathy, he is EXTREMELY arrogant, and he is very condescending. On one hand you will learn, but on the other hand, well he sucks
One of the worst professors at UCF. While I don't mind all the papers, the topic was boring. I don't understand his grading scale. Did not know how to work canvas in the beginning.
Hard at first but once you learn the writing style and footnotes you're fine. Clear and somewhat easy assignments. All prepare you to write the final paper. Would take with him again.
Several of my friends said Cassanello's class was difficult, but when I took it, I did not find it to be as difficult as I expected. I learned a lot and Cassanello was very clear and friendly. Lots of reading and writing but it is a history course. That is expected.
His class was time-consuming, but not overly difficult. He was always willing to help. You will work, though. I received an A, but I busted my butt to get it. Also, even though he says his final is non-cumulative, both classes I took with him had one essay question in the final from an assignment done before the midterm.
Excellent professor. His work load is extensive and much is expected of you but he is very accessible. Work hard and take advantage of his liberal rough draft policy if you want an A. Once you reach out to him about the work, you will find him to be hilarious, easily available, and an excellent guide. Highly recommended.
Required class for History majors. Otherwise, do not take unless you want to be a better writer. Because, you. will. write. forever. Like at least 1000+ words a week on top of reading and taking notes, which you HAVE to do to. Stressful amount of work, but I learned a lot. Dr. C demands excellence, but will help you be excellent.
Dr. Cassanello is very helpful & prompt in replying to questions. Be prepared to WORK!!! Read a book and write a 4 page paper roughly every 10 days. Very fair in grading papers and criticism is constructive. Manage your time and you'll be fine. This is University, if it was easy, everyone would do it. Will definitely take more classes with Dr. C.
First class at UCF. Difficult if you don't know what CMS is. He is very helpful with assignments and gives great feedback, always emails back promptly unlike most online classes. Be prepared to read and write quite a bit. Pick a good topic for your final as well. A topic with a lot of research. Overall, it was a great class and I learned a lot.
It should be noted that this class is in correctly conducting research, objective thinking and most importantly correct research writing. The professor is difficult. Be prepared for many papers and a lot of reading. I would not recommend this class as an online class unless you are dedicated and organized. Tough to manage with heavy workload.
I do not feel like Dr. Cassanello is qualified to teach this subject area or is even interested in teaching this course. He had no enthusiasm, it sounded like he was reading from a scriptreading the material for the first time in his lectures and he could not pronounce certain wordsnames, which I found very frustrating. He's also condescending.
He was funny and cool and added some additional fun to this class. He was kind of rude though at unexpected times. He was a good professor for this class, but I am not taking him again.
Dr. Cassanello is a very tough grader. He's pretty sarcastic and sometimes makes you feel stupid for not knowing things. Although I passed his class, there was struggle. He won't hesitate to give you a 0 on your papers if your citations are wrong.
I think Dr. Cassanello is a great professor. Every class entails a lot of reading and writing, but, this is college! He makes you work for your grade, but also gives very clear instructions on how to successfully pass his class. All the tools are given to you, you just have to use them. Just follow the rubric and make sure you are organized.
Dr. Cassanello is a very tough grader but he will help you if you ask for it. I took this class online and received an A in it but I worked very hard for that grade! He will make sure you read and he will make sure you write. He will not hesitate to give you a 0 but you will learn to improve in writing by taking this class. I enjoyed it a lot.
For his online class we read multiple books, sometimes one a week. 4-5 page papers for every paper, written about the book, a long article/many articles, and his recorded lectures. No tolerance for late assignments - On every paper at least one person got a 0. I got a 100 on most papers but I follow exact directions. Not terrible, just stressful.
DO NOT TAKE! This is a history class, not an English class. Weekly papers which are not graded on content. Every assignment is greeted with "I reserve the right to not grade this paper if ...." I had one paper rejected because my footnotes were in the wrong format, I used MLA not Chicago formatting. 1 of the worst classes I've taken!
Dr. Cassanello was a fantastic professor. He's a funny guy and shows he cares about his students. Great use of Webcourses. He didn't lecture often and was heavy on student presentations and projects. The class took a lot of work with weekly quizzes and small papers. However, if the class work is done thoroughly, an A is clearly obtainable.
Easy going and chill professor. Cares more about your creative ideas on his papers. doesnt pay attention to word count or grammar. The presentations are casual and the quizzes and tests are taken online and we worked together as a class to complete them so it wasnt bad at all. Works w students. Listened to our feedback and even changed due dates.
I feel that he put no effort into this online class other than copying and pasting what he had from last semester. To make it worse, he is sarcastic, petty and lazy with grading. It can take up to 2 weeks to get an assignment back but then he gets frustrated when people don't follow his unclear instructions and have no way to view graded work.
Dr. Cassanello is an AWESOME professor. The ONLY way you will not pass is if you do not clearly read the rubric for his weekly posts and papers, he tells you EXACTLY what he expects in clear wording, so its up to you to listen. His tests are from the study guides verbatim, but YOU must fill them out. He's understanding and flexible, loved him!
I love Professor Cassanello! Weekly homework was fun and interesting. He's very understanding if you're going through something personal and will work with you to give you time. His quizzes are easy because you get a study guide that goes with them. Just read the book and the answers are all there. Will take his class again if I have the chance.
Professor Cassanello's course is clearly structured: each week, you read a chapter of the book, take a quiz on it, and write a paper with citations. Halfway through the semester he'll add a discussion grade where your role alternates each week. There are two online exams and a final paper. It's pretty straightforward, even if it's a bit boring.
Cant speak highly enough of this professor. Only thing is I wish he gave more feedback on papers, and the weekly study guides (30 written response questions) are super long for the weekly quizzes. Its a lot of work, but he's a great professor and you will end the course having learned so much. Grading is clear and fair. Would take again for sure.
AMH 4174. Heavy on reading and writing as to be expected for an upper-level history course. I felt I got more out of this course than I have any other course at UCF. If you complete the assigned readings and put in some effort, you'll be fine. I look forward to taking more courses with him.
I ADORE this professor and this class. He has the most clear, concise online structure out of any online class I have taken (and I have taken a lot). Every week, you take a quiz on the reading, write a discussion post on it, and do a mini-writing assignment. Other than that, there is 1 midterm and 1 final. The reading is very interesting.
