Nice guy but politician!

great prof, looking to take another course!
Good prof. Tells you what'll be on tests and exams. :)
interesting course and prof... but a little biased towards the left-wing
Excellent teacher, looks like he enjoys teaching
Really helps out f you need it.. Makes sure you understand and do well

awesome prof...but marks really tough
explanations are clear, overall amazing prof, really makes course interesting
Excellent prof, fun class! Economics scared me before Chernomas.
Strong opinions, but a very god prof.
This is a fantastic class- interesting and informative. If you have to take economics, make sure you take it with him!
He rules! Quite strong opinions but they're the right ones, hee, hee. He was incredibly interesting and seemed like he enjoyed being in class.
Chernomas is simply unprofessional. An upper-year course in economic analysis shouldn't include tedious sermons about why the Iraq war is a 'neoliberal experiment'. You'll be disappointed with this class if you're looking for an impartial and representative survey of heterodox schools of thought.
He is a very knowledgeable person, practical and strongly opiniated. His class is very informative beyond the materials. He likes to discuss current issues in class. He gives a fair account on both left and right views. Take notes carefully, u should do well
A clear and engaging lecturer and fair grader. Very Marxist, whether that's good or bad depends on whether that's your thing, but gives a fair account of all sides. I only wish this course had more content - I got an A+ and was incredibly frustrated with the amount of review we did whenever anyone wanted - how could anyone do poorly in this class?
he's cool. he talks about benz. which is to my interest. i did squat in that class and pulled a D. Better than I expected. I missed 3/4 tests, and didn't study for the exam. And he is lenient, I wish more professors are like him.

I would suggest not to take the class if it is your first economics class. He may be layed back and an easy marker, but only if you make a top grade on the first paper after that he plays favorites, and if you are not a favorite and go for help be prepared for he will treat you like rubbish and say he is busy so hurry up. big ego, likes his stories.
This class is not easy for international students. His explaination is not easy to understand, and his tests are in class essays! Final exam are 2 essays as well. He seldom takes notes, so we have to write our notes by listen to what he says in the class. But he is an responsible prof though!
Absolutely disorganized. Lectures consist of him sitting in a chair reading articles to us for 55 minutes 3 times a week. Unfair in his grading scheme.
easy to pull out a good mark in this class as long as you go to class. He always covers the test material in class. Must be a good note taker, he does not use overheads, it's all by ear. Very helpful if you have questions. If you give him respect, he'll help you. He is sort of full of himself, but i haven't found a prof that isn't.
Excellent prof. I got over an A in both intro classes. He is clear and concise. If you have no idea about economics (economics used to be beyond me), he will give you a strong foundation to build on. He may seem inapproachable, but keep trying - when you get to know him he's a great guy. Take 121 and 122 with him - you'll be glad you did.
He is one of the top profs in this field. Very knowledgeable and fair. Interesting lecturer. He doesn't simply hand out good grades. You get what you deserve in this class which I don't see enough of in universities these days.
Very good prof. Interesting lectures helpfully if you go talk to him one on one. Definitely a class you need to attend & take notes (no overheads) to do well in. Tests are pretty hard.
Mr.Chernomas rules! I was expecting the worst having to take this class, but he's so helpful and incorporates humor into his lectures to make them fun! Tests are strinctly from lectures, but he prepares you for the essay tests with study questions and marks are usually high.
He moves through material pretty quickly, and is an old-school lecturer - no powerpoints or notes online. Helpful when approached.
Very smart and very knowledgeable guy. I didnt even know what economics was before i took his class and now im getting an honours degree in economics
i am pretty much in love with this man. most interesting prof i have ever had and so into the material. he is the only reason i am staying in school. makes classes so enjoyable and really helpful when it comes to questions. doesnt make you learn the insignificant info, and doesnt hold you responsible for definitions. wicked class, wicked prof.
If you EVER got the chance to take a class with him, DO IT!!!! Amazing professor. Easily the best one i've ever had at the U of M
Chernomas was an amazing professor. He does not use slideshows or handouts, but strictly lectures. However, his topics are clear and concise and he's happy to answer any questions you might have during his lectures. Very easy class to pass but requires a more indepth understanding of the concepts to truly do well. Take his class!
This prof is amazing!!! even though he doesn't use PowerPoint his lectures are easy to follow. He gives a review of the potential test question which are super helpful. GREAT PROF!! i recommend
Amazing professor. Take every class you can with him. Very helpful, and smart guy
One of my favorite profs so far. Interesting lectures, covers both sides (although it's clear which side he's on). Doesn't use the textbook too much, but does use the readers. Show up, study a little, and you will finish with a B+.
A raging marxist and Sweden's biggest fan, but he makes sure to present all perspectives. Engaging, entertaining, interesting and clear. Would take a class with him again in a heartbeat
One of the most interesting classes I've taken! Excellent prof! He is extremely knowledgable and enthralling. Class attendance is very important. Tests were tough (2 tests worth 30%, final exam worth 40%) and each test consisted of 2 long answer questions. He is a reasonable marker.
This man made me fall in love with economics. What an amazing lecturer! His teaching style is pretty refreshing; no powerpoints, no slides, and no overheads, just a blackboard. He lectures clearly, concisely, and is always forthcoming. Just show up, take notes, pay attention, and you'll be fine.
So awesome. Class was super interesting, and he doesn't try to trick you for your exams. You write two long answers for the tests, but he gives you the test questions ahead of time, and goes through each one! Genuinely wants his students to do well. I was often surprised how quickly class went.
Definitely a very knowledgable prof. Took this class as I need it for the Family Social Sciences Faculty. Good sense of humour. Nice guy, very passionate about Economics. Doesn't use text too much. You must attend class as he tests you mostly on his class notes and his terminology!
LOVED this prof + class and I was only taking economics because it was a pre-requisite. He gives you his test questions AHEAD of time which is amazing. Just study those and you'll be fine, he honestly doesn't pull any tricks even on the final exam. Without a doubt take his class, just actually attend because he tests like 90% on his notes.
Great guy! He gives you potential test questions 1 week in advance. There are no handouts, just lectures, so be sure to pay attention and write/type good notes. Also, it's good to have the textbook and read it ahead of time, you can't really cram critical thinking with economics a day before the exam. Best of luck!
Honestly, what an amazing guy. Totally recommend taking any course by him, he's brilliant and will always help you when you have questions. Never makes you feel dumb for not knowing the answer.
This professor is simply great. He makes the material of the class interesting and highly relevant to current events. His teaching methods are clear, and his tests and exams contain no surprises. He even gives you the exam questions to study days before the exam! Although he is extremely leftist, it only enhances the class and the material.
One of the best profs I've had! Doesn't use slides or notes but he paces his lectures well and it's easy to follow along and take notes. He's funny and witty and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. Doesn't try to trick you. Gives out test prep ahead of time. Just pay attention and you do great!
Excellent professor. Brilliant economist. Highly intelligent.
taken two classes with Bob. Most interesting lectures in the dept.
great prof - very helpful during office hours!
Great Prof. Really knowledgeable about the things he teaches. If you want a good grade in his ECON 1210/20 course I highly recommend recording the lectures. He spells out arguments exactly the way he wants to hear them on the tests and exam.
Prof. Chernomas is a wonderul engaging lecturer who really knows his stuff when it comes to economics. Yes, he has a clear political preference so if you believe what the Right-wingers are selling, you may not agree with him. In my humble opinion, he is on point.
At first, I really liked him. Everything about him is clear up until you go to office hours and ask him to change a mark on your test. He clearly agrees that the marker did mark it wrong but he'll make you feel like crap while he nitpicks at everything else. He did this for both my midterms. All-in-all, you'll find his lecture style engaging.
Rob Chernomas is a great prof. I had my first A in Econs with him. He knows his stuff very well. Gives you all test materials before hand, no excuse for failure. Would definitely take another class with him again.
Gives great lectures, IF you understand what he is talking about. If you're a person with no knowledge about politics and economics, you'll find this U1 course difficult. He doesnt use PowerPoint or D2L. You're purely tested on his lectures. Theories and models are more important than your opinion on tests. 2 tests and 1 final exam.
Thorough prof. Tests are 100% based on his lectures so you won't pass by reading his books. Class is too advanced however to be a U1 course. Need to be familiar with economic concepts beforehand to understand what's going on.
I had no background of economics and needed this for an elective. I surprisingly did fairly well. A nice professor & very clear on explanations. Must attend all lectures. Gives you potential test questions before tests, VERY helpful for studying. Study tip: write out answers to all questions, study over and over and you should do fine!
Chernomas is clear about what he wants on exams
Robert Chernomas is a prof I could listen to lecture all day. He talks fast but if you record the lectures you can really take a lot out of his condensed lectures and he really knows his stuff and is very helpful. Definitely want to take his class again!
Economic Determinants of Health taught by Rob will probably be one of my favourite courses I've taken in my degree - he's funny and passionate in lectures, never dull. Exams are long essay format which is challenging, but not impossible to do well if you prepared before.
Fantastic professor. His tests were 100% based on lectures, which is no problem if you show up to class and take good notes. He also provides potential test questions a week in advance and is extremely clear about what he wants on the tests. He is very good at explaining concepts- I had no previous knowledge of economics and I was completely fine.
He is a piece of art and a great professor! Lectures are straight forward and easy to understand, if you carefully listen to him and read the materials. Very polite, helpful and understanding person. However, his tests and final exam is going to make you work very hard.
good prof, clear explanations, entirely lecture based, must take notes if you want to pass
Definitely not a year 1 course. All he does is stand and talk, no PowerPoints and very little written notes. All of his test are all essay written format, and those three tests are the only thing you are graded on. Overall it was hard to grasp since he thinks everyone knows economics as well as he does.
Great professor. Knows how to lecture effectively and efficiently. First midterm really weeds out the people who are just trying to skate by, because he is pretty ruthless when it comes to understanding the material. Class size dropped by 50% after the first midterm. 10/10 would recommend if you are serious about learning or economics
Only teaches out of his own books (lol) and refers to himself on the third person. Lectures are about him bashing nobel price winners whos research disprove his conspiracy theories. Is not impartial, does not shows both sides of any argument but imposes on students his political views in a very unpleasant and explicit way. Also super confusing.
Grading is strict, and the weight of each test is huge
One of my absolute favourite profs, if not my favourite. I will not take an econ course unless it's taught by him. A lot of people don't like his lecturing style, but if you literally just listen to what he says and take notes instead of scrolling through instagram, you will be fine. I never do the readings, just listen to him during class.
One of my fave courses! Lectures are interesting, take good notes and then use those to study for the test and study whatever pages from the readings he goes over in class. Tests are fair-he gives potential questions a week in advance,& thats all you need to study but give yourself enough time to study, hes pretty particular about the content.
Excellent professor. No slides which means you must attend lectures if you're not someone who can learn from just the textbook. Keeps his lectures interesting and facilitates note taking. The most difficult part about this class is the abundance of dense readings. Unless you're interested in Marxian/ LW economics i would take this only if mandatory
Get ready to read, and at that, get ready to read rather dense material. The assigned readings are not something you read once over unless you're a Marxian wizard. He is very clear with what he expects, his tests contain no surprises. With that being said however, to get yourself ready for the tests it does take more work than most classes.
Had to take his class and honestly I do not know how this man got hired to be a prof. Everything anyone else has ever said is wrong to him and he doesn't believe in math unless it proves his point. yes read what I just said again. If you can RUN. if not goooood luck buddy
horrible
Makes it up as he goes. if you take one of his classes you've taken them all
Get ready for lobotomy. unless you are fully indoctrinated at the end of this, he won't pass you. my advice, leave your brain at the door and run with it.
Ingenious. Incredible economics historian and qualitative econonomic insight. This course woke me up from wokeness and gave me insight into neoliberalism tactics applied by both the left and right, changing overtime. It also taught me to think in an interdisciplinary way about policies, without falling victim to dog-whistling. Excellent professor
Get ready to be real confused real fast! The material is super easy (I mean Marx only wrote so much right..) but he over complicates EVERYTHING, and yes you have to memorize all the pointless jargon if you want an A. Personally I think he does it to make himself look smarter but that might just be me...
I was really excited for this course at the beginning of the term and looked forward to lectures. However, I felt some of my grades were unfair and he was not open to reviewing this with me. Obviously focus was not for helping the students.
I find the other reviews to be a little dramatic. Chernomas is a good prof and the course is an easy A IF you actually show up to each lecture, make good notes and do the readings. Test structure is 40/40/20 and he repeats many of the important topics that are key components of each exam numerous times. Key though is to take clear notes and read!
Good professor. He gives you the exact questions he is going to ask on his exams. Only way I can really see anyone getting below a B in any of his classes is not reading the assigned readings or just not studying the exam questions he gives everyone a week before the exam to prepare. Definitely recommend any of his courses. Just be ready for notes.
Chermonas's classes were some of my favourite I've ever taken. You really have to apply yourself. If you don't want to learn about alternative economics don't bother but if you do he is amazing. Clear about what material you will be tested on. He's quite old fashioned so you need to take lots of notes and be ready to PAY ATTENTION. Overall good
All of his tests are based only on his lectures and are essay formatted. He doesnt provide lecture slides nor record his lectures. So, I suggest you choose another prof if you do not like this. He mentions possible test questions, but you still have to study everything. A/A+ Is very difficult to achieve in his class. Gives vague feedbacks.
He is a very good lecturer and clearly knows his stuff but the tests are difficult to get a good mark on. He does give hints on what the marking is on but he gives one massive question and the answer must be very specific. He does not give good personal feedback besides having a review class after the eval. Must attend classes to pass
Classes aren't mandatory but I would recommend going to them if you want to pass this class. tests are heavy on your final grade as that's all their is to the class. Lots of reading in the textbook and course package. id recommend typing notes as he talks fast
this prof literally sits in front of the camera and reads the book which he wrote. does not make any sense and mumbles to himself the whole lecture, talks super fast and tests are very difficult. do not take classes w him.
The reviews from October and November 2021 are comical. Our class group was filled with ´I didnt make it to class, Can someone share their notes, Whats on the test, when is the test. You get my drift. To succeed? Go to class, pay attention, take notes , work. Like a real university student. What the test will be on will be clear, easy A+
very heavy reading bc all tests are based on the textbook and his coursepack. anyway be prepared to listen to him carefully otherwise you will fail. he is very boring btw i was falling asleep during his class w out realizing lol
get ready for self study.
He just reads the book and doesn't even have slides to make lectures convenient. Boring lectures and very old-style. Makes course difficult. Felt like I was taking a class from the 19th century. He is nice, but taking a course with him is not a great idea as he even wants you to study the course pack (extra material) and puts an extra burden.
self study please if you take this course with him
You just have to come to class because he gives no note... Just talks and expect you to write, refers to the course pack from time to time. He is a tough grader I would say because he knows what he is looking for.
He gives great lectures and offers lots of examples to help with understanding. He does not offer extra help to students who don't attend class, which I feel is fair. He doesn't use lecture slides, so you will have to pay attention in class. He is clear on what he expects and offers plenty of chances to get feedback. Overall, great prof.
No slides and required reading seems to be a bit compared to the syllabus depending on where we got to in lecture, so attendance is pretty important. He's pretty clear on what to expect for tests, what he's likely going to cover, after tests he reviews answers so you're not left in the dark.Attendance is important if you ever want to ask questions!
One of the best professors for ECON. Even though his classes are challenging, you will learn a lot. Be prepared to write down a lot of notes as his tests are based on lectures. Even if you miss just one class, you might end up missing out on the answers to his potential questions for the test. There is no final.
One of the best professors I have ever had in university. Best thing you can do to get an A+ is to attend every single lecture and take notes. Even missing just one class can prevent you from doing well on the tests because he only asks questions on stuff he has explained in class. Would definitely recommend!
Great professor honestly. Easy A+ as long as you attend the lectures. He makes learning fun and doesn't want to stress his students at all. The answers to all his test questions are said in class so if you miss even one class, no matter how much you read you might miss out on writing what he expects. No complaints at all!
Best economics professor so far!! Just make sure you don't skip classes. However, to get an A or A+, please ensure class materials are revised before the exam.
Chernomas is a challenging but engaging professor. Attend every lecture, take detailed notes, and utilize resources like unstuck AI for study prep. The course requires significant effort, but if you stay on top of the material, you can succeed. Overall, a rewarding experience for those interested in alternative economics.
