Dr. Chiles is inspirational. He taught two sections this semester, a morning lecture with around 150 students and my evening seminar lecture with around 30. While I'm sure the smaller evening seminar made for more personal and fun lectures, but regardless his lectures were enjoyable, he is absolutely knowledgeable, and he encourages student input.
Very good lectures, it is easy to tell he is both knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. Papers and tests are not too bad ,if you study that is. Would very much recommend.
One of my favorite professors. His lectures are very similar to the textbook, but he doesn't post notes online and he doesn't have a lot of text on the slideshow, so you have to pay attention. Tests and essays were not bad, and though the course was hard it was very enjoyable and I would highly recommend it.
Dr. Chiles has definitely been my favorite professor so far. His lectures are easy to follow and interesting to listen to. Going in for office hours was also really helpful. You can tell he not only loves history, but his job. Looking forward to taking more of his classes in the future.
he's awesome and omg SO HOT, you won't find it hard to pay attention for two reasons: he's hella hot and super passionate about history. take any of his classes, but be prepared to read. he is great
have yet to miss a class, he's a beautiful human being inside and out. he is so incredible passionate about history and it really shows in his way of teaching. amount of reading depends on the lecture, but it's usually one-two chapters and some primary sources. lectures not posted online. would deff recommend!
Amazing and passionate teacher. Even brought in his daughter during take your child to work day!
An amazing lecturer and you can tell he's really passionate about history and music. He graduated from Towson with a degree in music and its awesome how he uses old music and ties it into history. His powerpoints are really creative and clean. He deserves to be promoted to a professor and not just a lecturer.
He's a beautiful human being and super passionate about history. His lectures are entertaining, and provide practically all the exam information, though the exams have nothing you can't look up. He provides very helpful study guides and essay prompts. Not a ton of reading, but discussion participation is important. Absolutely loved the class.
THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. He brings so much energy, passion, and intelligence to every lecture. Takes his job seriously and does everything he can to be there for the students. UMD is so lucky to have him.
I would highly recommend taking History 201 or any other class with Professor Chiles. He can make any topic seem interesting, and he really wants all of his students to succeed. However, exams require a lot of writing, but he provides study guides in advance, and there's nothing that you can't look up.
This dude was awesome
BEST PROFESSOR EVER
Prof. Chiles is the best teacher I've ever had in my life. I switched my major to history because of him, no joke. I looked forward to going to his lectures. He has the uncanny ability to describe a decade of history so eloquently in just 50 minutes. He offers extra credit too. Definitely going to be taking his classes in the future.
Great class. Lots of opportunity to succeed. One project throughout the class. Definitely recommend.
Professor Chiles has been my favorite professor in college thus far! Biggest piece of advice: GO TO DISCUSSION! Lectures are super interesting, and even though I admit, I am a history junkie, he can make the objectively boring facts super interesting. He also allows for analysis which makes history creative! (Shoutout to the best TA: Darien Brahm!)
Dr. Chiles was one of the best professors that I have ever had. He was super helpful when my ta was honestly horrible.
I took the class Fall 2017. He makes the lectures fun and interesting. I genuinely feel that I learned a lot from the class. You can definitely get an A if you want, just make sure you turn in quality work.
Excellent teacher loved his class, but tas handle grading
Dr. Chiles has an amazing personality and his love for history reflects based off of his lectures amazing lectures. The TA's do all the grading, but I would recommend this professor because he makes lectures so much easier to listen to.
He's the man. Show up, take notes, study a bit and you get an A.
he is a straight up lecturer. like no words on the slides at all he just straight up speaks and you have to listen and write what he says which is a lil hard. and the whole class is graded on like a midterm, final, and 2 papers which is stresfful. but hes a great teacher and a great guy.
He knows his stuff and knows how to make lectures so interesting and fascinating. He also makes the best jokes. You get 2 papers and a midterm and final exam. He provides all the information for the exams before hand and the papers aren't that hard to write. I would definitely recommend this class because he is so amazing. I'm gonna miss it a lot.
Good lecturer and fair tests - pretty straightforward class. Overall, 10/10 - you know what I mean ;)
He's simply amazing. Soooo passionate! He will make you have an appreciation for history. He is super hot too! He literally looks like a movie star! Sooo easy on the eyes!
Dr. Chiles is one of the best lecturers at UMD which makes the class very interesting. He also has a clear passion for history making learning the material a little bit easier, but the one negative to the class is that discussion participation is apart of your grade along with the papers which are just annoying busy work.
This was an amazing class and the lectures are interesting. There are two 4-5 page papers, a midterm, and a final. He usually offers optional extra credit and wants his students to do well! Definitely take this course if you are considering it because it is fairly easy to do well, as long as you do the work and pay attention in class.
Without a doubt my favorite professor I've had. Best lectures I've experienced in my time in college. Very cooperative and cool dude too. Highly recommend taking any class with him.
Professor Chiles was always excited to teach, which made his lectures much more interesting. Taking notes on more than just the slides is important, and it is hard to bounce back from missed lectures.
The best professor I have had so far in my short years of college. Instead of other professors that talk in a monotone voice, Chiles does a great job with making mundane topics interesting. Would definitely recommend.
Probably the most amazing professor ever. He really is passionate about History and it shows in his class. He is also adorable. You will love this class please take it. He is the best professor ever.
Dr. Chiles was the best teacher I've had at UMD. He is so nice and his lectures are so interesting. I am not a history major, but I want to take as many classes as I can with him. He always makes dad jokes and is very easy on the eyes. Such a great person and everyone should take his classes!
Dr. Chiles has been my favorite professor here at UMD. He cares about his students and wants to do everything in his power to make sure his students succeed. His lectures are really upbeat and it keeps the whole class interested in the topic we are discussing. I would totally recommend him to anyone taking history. You have to go to class though!
Dr. Chiles is easily the best professor I've had at UMD! His lectures are so interesting, it doesn't even feel like class. He is truly passionate about his job, and you can tell by the enthusiasm in his lectures. He really cares about his students and is so easy to communicate with, he's also funny. Definitely participate in discussion, though!
He is very passionate about what he does do lectures were very interesting and not boring at all! He gives you a study guide that prepares you for the midterm and final exam! Participate in discussion and do the boards this class is extremely easy.
Chiles is the best teacher at UMD. He is superfriendly and the most intelligent man on campus. I have taken two classes from the Chiles tree already and I plan to take plenty more. He makes school fun.
Dr. Chiles is my one of favorite professors that I've taken a class with at UMD. He has such entertaining lectures, always adds funny anecdotes, and is just an all around great dude. Huge fan! Not a history major but looking to take another class with him in the future if I can.
Excellent lectures. I never enjoyed history before this class, but Chiles really made it interesting. Not too labor-intensive but you have to compose 4 posts in the discussion board weekly. My TA was a bit harsh with her grading but they offered extra credit multiple times. I definitely recommend this class, Robert Chiles is a great professor.
Dr. Chiles is hands down the best professor I have ever had. I made this account specifically just to rate him. Every lecture is incredibly informative, important, interesting, and funny - do NOT miss class! There is a fair amount of assigned reading - get the audiobook versions! Dr. Chiles is a legend, and rightfully so. You MUST take his classes
Dr. Chiles is probably the best lecturer you could ever have. I could listen to him talk forever. He is also very understanding and responsive to student concerns. All the grading is handled by his TA's, so grades can be uneven between different sections. Participation in discussion really matters.
He is such a n interesting teacher and he knows how to tell history as a story. His TA's this semester were kinda rough especially with grading papers which is annoying because not a lot of people are used to writing history papers
He's a really amazing person and professor. He's such a gem, and every one of his lectures is amazing. He puts so much thought into his classes, and cares so much about getting to know his students and their thoughts. He's really into discussion, and really appreciates participation. It's not the easiest class, but worth it if you love history!
Dr. Chile is a great lecturer, his tests are fair. Attend the lectures and you will get an A. Don't attend the lectures and you will get a C maybe a B.
Dr. Chiles was an amazing Professor this semester. His lectures were very engaging and you can tell he really has a passion for teaching.
Clearly adapted well to COVID-19 risk reduction measures and teaching in an online environment. His class was great online and I have no doubt it would be peerless in a brick-and-mortar environment.
Best history professor I have ever had. PERIODT.
He is a very passionate teacher and his lectures are engaging. There are 2 papers and the tests are given orally. Don't be feared by that because he doesn't want you to struggle, he will lead you towards the answer. The exams are just a discussion about the material to see if you're following. He is one of the best HIST teachers I've had at UMD.
Very passionate and lectures are seamless. Had him in person and then when everything was transitioned online; his lecture recordings would sometimes be 90 mins from the usual 50, but they were so good and interesting that I did not mind. In person, it is sometimes difficult to take notes quickly enough, but you'll figure it out.
Such a nice man. Just always goes out of his way to help and respect his students.
I took Dr. Chiles for his history honors seminar, and as a STEM major it was hard to stay engaged at times. However, he really tried to make the content engaging by making it applicable to us, and he truly cared about us as students. You get to know him not just as a professor, but as a father, a history lover, and a really cool guy!
Two history papers, a mid-term and a final. Also weekly discussion grade and discussion posts grades weekly. The lectures are long but he is great at presenting it in a fun way.
Dr. Chiles is easily the best professor I've had so far at UMD. He is so passionate about what he's teaching that you become interested even if history and politics are two of your least favorite things. I highly recommend taking any class taught by him.
Dr. Chiles is the best professor I've ever had, hands down. He cares so deeply about his students and the material. He is fully dedicated to helping students learn and is totally fair when it comes to work and grading. He made material that could become very boring jump off the page. Could not recommend him strongly enough!
Literally the nicest professor ever! I took an immigration class and he is so sweet. He actually cares about his students, and is so friendly. 10/10
Dr. Chiles is such a dream. The class is so easy and the exams were pieces of cake. Basically if you attended discussion sections and did the discussion boards, you had enough info to ace the exams. Final was the same format- write 2 paragraphs on topics. Great enthusiastic lectures. Only issue was grading took long time. TAKE DR CHILES EASY A!!
This is a great class to take with Dr Chiles, but it is a lot of reading. As long as you do the reading, do discussion boards and take good notes during class you should be set!
Dr. Chiles is a truly incredible lecturer, even online. I have had the pleasure of taking his HIST200 course online AND HIST201 in person. He is an amazing professor and deserves all the credit and praise he can get!
Do I even need to leave a review when all of the other ones speak for me? Yeah, seriously, Dr. Chiles is the best. I get genuinely excited to go to his class. He makes history so interesting to learn about, he is so passionate, expressive, detailed, and enthralling. If you go to UMD you have to take this class, even if you hate history.
Best professor at UMD. His lectures are amazing and make contents like the Gilded Age seem interesting. His passion for history can be seen and it makes class so fun. The workload is not too heavy and he gives a lot of time to work on the paper. Do yourself a favor and take this class!
He does not require any textbooks which is a real life saver when so many other professors require pricey textbooks
Such a nice history buff, really makes the lectures and discussions interesting. 10/10 will recommend you will pass and receive a good grade because he is very thorough and content heavy!
I've never been a fan of history at ALL but Chiles is such an amazing lecturer & person in general. He made me actually interested in history (I am a STEM major taking this class as a gen-ed, history & english have never been my thing). He is extremely compassionate and flexible if you have any issues outside of class which is rare to find in profs
Great professor
Prof Chiles is amazing! He's so dedicated and interested in the content, and he lectures in a way that keeps you engaged and wanting more. There's no textbook but the readings are pretty necessary for discussion - only a few readings a week but they can sometimes be a little lengthy. Excited to have him again for 201 in the fall!
Chiles is literally the best history professor I have ever seen. He makes lectures so entertaining, and I hate history. I learned so much and cannot recommend taking his class enough. He is easy to reach outside of class and genuinely cares about his students.
One of the best professors I've ever had at UMD. Amazing lecturer, he's funny, engaging, passionate, interesting and so knowledgable about the material. We had 2 oral exams and 1 paper which were easy if you attended lecture, paid attention and can craft a basic argument. He tries so hard to make his students engaged and get us involved. Take him!!
Prof. Chiles is considered by myself and many other history majors I've talked to, to be the best Professor in the entirety of the History Department at UMD. Take his classes--any of them--it is incredible how he gives voice to nearly every aspect of society in which ever given period his class focuses on.
Professor Chiles was by far one of the best professors I've had at UMD. His lectures were super interesting and they were like listening to a story. There were 2 exams and one final paper. The exam questions were all fair. There were readings to do every week, but nothing super time consuming.
Top tier. Simply the best history lecturer on campus.
Dr. Chiles is an amazing lecturer. I find myself very interested the entire time and often can't believe it when the 50 minutes is up. HIST 200 is two lectures and one discussion per week. Come to his lectures and take good notes during them, and show up to TA discussions for participation points and you'll surely do well in this class!
best professor ever, he's so enthusiastic, take his class
Professor Chiles is incredible. His lectures were extremely entertaining, and I would look forward to going to lectures. He knows how to keep students engaged and there was never a boring part of his lectures. The class is graded on very little, but if you do the readings and attend lectures you will be fine.
I mean, we knew this already, but Dr. Chiles is fantastic. This class was entirely discussion-based, based on a new book we read each week. A lot of work, but the in-class discussions and the rapport with him and the rest of the class was fantastic. Easily my favorite class this semester, everyone should take a class with Dr. Chiles!
WOW! Professor Chiles is fantastic and I can't recommend him enough! He has a great ability to make even the most boring topics interesting. There isn't a ton of work in his class, just one paper, midterm, final, and quick discussion posts. Easy class and fun lecturer!
Dr. Chiles is a great professor! You can tell how much he loves teaching. As someone who is not too interested in history, lecture definitely was a little boring at times. But overall a super easy class with only one paper and the study guides for the midterm/final are very similar to what is on the exam. A great class to take for a gen-ed!
Professor Chiles is amazing at what he does. His lectures are passionate and very engaging. He's very understanding and makes his class easy for students. He really cares about student's education. I highly recommend having him as your professor.
Dr. Chiles was a great teacher to start off University with. I took this course during the summer and it was an easy course. With discussion boards and participation points being the main grades given. He was interested to all our our ideas and was obviously passionate about this subject which made it motivating to learn about it.
PLEASE TAKE HIM! I do not think I have had a better lecturer for a class. He shows so much passion for what he teaches and every single lecture felt like attending a mini ted talk. Not too much work either. Also had a great TA (shoutout Anna) who made discussions great too. Could not recommend a better class.
Best class I've even taken.
Dr. Chiles is the BEST history professor ever. His lectures don't feel like lectures. Attending class is like watching a movie. I am a CS major with little interest in humanities, but Chiles makes it fun. Yes, there are face-to-face oral exams for the midterm/final but I think they are fun tbh. You just converse about what you learned. 10/10
Chiles is the best at UMD. He is hilarious, engaging, has the best lectures. He gets to know every student. His office hours are great for reviewing class materials, but he begins by asking how you are and making you feel seen. Chiles has impacted my History degree so much, and I would not have had the great experience I had at UMD without him.
Chiles is so funny and cool. His lectures are political, historical, but also focus on pop culture. His classes are so interesting and the BEST classes I have taken at UMD. Someone give this man tenure stat!
10/10 recommend, however Dr. Chiles talked just a little too much. Would have liked if he stopped his tyrant to hold a discussion or ask the class what they thought.
All I can say is YES, YES, YES. Give this man tenure and ask about his pickles. Honestly the best professor I've had, he makes every class enjoyable and entertaining. His opinions are strong but he is so respectful of others. If you take Professor Chiles, do the work and you'll get an easy pass with a fun semester.
