This man truly cares about his students passing. He is a great teacher, I am not one who is good at math and was definitely scared to take this class. But he did an amazing job teaching and really ensures all his students are understanding what is being taught.
Connelly is EXTREMELY passionate about math. He expects everyone to feel that way too, and sort of makes you feel bad if youre not. The curriculum isnt really up to him, but hes a good professor. He is accessible outside of class if you need him. He is very enthusiastic during lectures and makes awful jokes. Nice guy
This instructor is one of the best mathematicians out there, hes a genius and makes lectures enjoyable.
He is a very good instructor and you can easily see that he is passionate towards math.
Great Professor, one of the best at USF
One of the greatest professors I've ever had, if you take his class seriously. He provides everyone with tons of office hours and resources to be prepared and he knows exactly what he is talking about if you ask him a question. He gives short quizzes every class but I found it helpful to ensure I was keeping up with the material. Really good
Best professor I have ever had for Calc I. Changed my life and the way that I look at math. 10000000000000% recommend taking this class, you will not regret. Although he makes you work for it, it will change your way of thinking about math forever. Best calc class I have ever taken. Period.
Mr. Connelly is a true gem that can be found among teachers at USF. Never have I ever been so excited to be coming to class and explore new things! He is kind, warm, funny, witty, smart, knowledgeable, and most importantly: passionate about what he is doing. He took the teaching of math to an entirely another level!
Best professor at USF, hands down. He is extremely intelligent, passionate, and informative. I understand the subject better than ever, and I feel immensely prepared for Calc II. He has great lectures, and there are quizzes everyday. The quizzes really prepare you for the exam. He also has many office hours and is great at reinforcing concepts.
Mr. Connelly is the best mathematics professor I've had to date. His lectures are extraordinarily detailed and he manages to get some comedic relief in there. Go to his office hours (numerous) or email him for help if you need it!! Daily quizzes, but he lets you know what to study for. TRULY THE BEST PROF!!
Mr. C is the most amazing math professor Ive ever had. He cares so, so much about all of his students. His exams are pretty rough, but he gives study guides for all of them, and if you show that you care about your grade and are putting effort in, hell find a way to help you out. Go to his office hours if you need any help. Hes wonderful.
He is the best math professor I ever had. I highly recommend taking his class. There is one quiz at the beginning of every class and homework for every week, but it is not hard as he well-explains the material. His classes are fun, very friendly and always wealing to help you during office hours. If you want to learn, take his class.
Great guy full of amazing teaching and bad dad jokes. Taking him for my third semester and love his teaching style. He is very dedicated to his work and truly cares about making sure everyone understands the material and provides a lot of office hours. Tough grader but it is because he wants you to understand the concept and not just the answer.
The Best.
Connelly is great, but for Pre-Calc at USF it doesn't really matter who your professor is, everything is online( HW, quizzes, and tests). Learn to work the MyLabs Plus system well! He does not create the tests, but we did get an exam content sheet and were able to take our tests twice (1st & 2nd attempt). Get ready to spend hours at the smartlab.
I failed this course and I love this man. Great guy, learned a lot. He tells you exactly what you need to do to pass, I didn't do it, didn't pass. Expect working a lot outside of lectures on the material and you'll pass. Also he dresses like a pirate without an eyepatch or peg leg. That's an upside. He's lovely.
Mr. Connelly is by far, hands down, the best professor at USF. He tells you right away what you should expect of him and what he expects of you. He truly cares that you learn the material and demystifies many of the complexities of math. I am taking him for my third semester now and would take him again if I could. Really cares about his students!
My favorite teacher despite math being my least favorite class. He actually made me enjoy math so much more. The class isnt a breeze, but if you put in the time you will succeed. A funny, charming, respectable professor who wants his students to truly learn. Received a 99.8 in the class by working hard and putting in extra time.
The greatest math teacher I've ever had!
The man is a legend. Lectures feel like a bunch of horribly hilarious dad jokes with some math sprinkled in there (I'm half kidding, his lectures are very helpful). He is very willing to help if you need it, he has a ton of office hours and always encourages people to come to them. If you do the hw and the guidelines he posts you cannot fail.
If you have a chance to take Robert Connelly please do take it. He is not an easy A professor, but he gives you all the tools you need to get an A yourself. Quizzes every Friday and he tells you exactly what you need to study. Exams are not easy however they are very similar to the exam guidelines he posts. He is hilarious, wears cowboy boots.
I have been lucky to have many great math teachers but he is definitely one of the best. He really cares about teaching and has long office hours. He says you need to devote about 16 hours a week to learn calculus and he is not wrong. Really funny guy and has the best facial hair of anyone at the school. Ask him about the three kingdoms joke.
This prof is a GEM. Take him take him take him, esp if you're going on to calc III/need background for calc. NOT an easy class! Lots of homework, which didn't really help me as they didn't line up w exams, i never once studied the homework, study the BOOK for exams + wkshts/problems in-class. He cares so much for his students. tells dad jokes.
Great professor. Don't hesitate to take him, he'll actually teach you Calculus.
Professor Connelly is a great professor. I fell years behind in math because my teachers could not teach conceptually. When I realized I finally had a conceptual math professor, I decided to give it my all to learn calculus and it worked. The lectures are crucial to passing the class. If you study and go to office hours you will learn calculus.
Excellent Professor. He is a genius cowboy.
Costanza actually cares about his students' success. He has several office hours throughout the week and doesn't judge you if you do not know how to do a problem. He makes you work for it and assigns a lot of work but it is worth it in the end.
Robert Connelly definitely knows his math well and isn't scared to flaunt that. However, he rarely explains all examples of definitions in class in depth for EVERYONE to understand. He tends to take on a condescending tone when speaking to a student who doesn't understand the lesson which is very unprofessional. Would NOT take him again.
One of the most intelligent and genuinely caring professors I've been fortunate to have. Makes you work for your grade but gives plenty of opportunities for EC. As long as you follow his directions, there's no reason for you to not pass. The course requires a lot of work, but he is one of THE BEST math professors I've ever had. Highly recommend.
He made math fun and easy to understand. I actually enjoyed going to lecture and have never been able to say that about math before. Attendance was mandatory as the online content he posted was only a guideline of what was actually covered in class.
Professor Connelly is a pretty good person- he tries his best to understand the questions you ask, and answer them to the best of his ability. For some reason, however, his teaching left me bored and confused a lot. All assignments are online, and I felt like I was teaching myself and attempting not to fail the entire time.
I had a disdain for math before Mr. Connelly, but I genuinely enjoy the subject now. He cares a lot for student success especially when you go to him for help, he is always willing and ready to help students who come to him for help and will explain the concepts or if you're just struggling with the algebra he'll work with you. DO THE HOMEWORK.
Connelly gives you all the resources to succeed, with great lectures, office hours, great at answering questions, and quiz/exam guidelines. However, be prepared to do the work on your end! If you do the homework and quiz guidelines, you will be fine! You have to do is practice them and it will take time, but you won't be teaching yourself!
A fantastic math professor. Takes the time to explain new concepts in a way that focuses on understanding rather than memorization. Patiently corrects algebra mistakes and sets you up for calc 1 and calc 2, if you choose to take these courses. Genuinely, he is the best college math professor I've ever had. However, lots of homework, so be prepared.
I took him for precalc and calc 2 and he is by far the best math professor I have ever had. He truly cares for his students and responds to emails fast. His notes are clear and easy to understand, lecture videos are on youtube, and he holds office hours if you need help. I highly recommend taking his class. His Friday quizzes are given questions.
He's a really great professor and will explain your questions. If you care about your grade and you really work for it, there isn't any reason for you not to get at least a B. He does video lectures with mini quizzes; quizzes, homework, and exams are on MLP; and he does his large lectures on Blackboard with iClicker.
Mr.C is an awesome professor. He genuinely cares about his students and any questions you ask are going to be answered and explained by him. There is a fair bit of homework due to the fast pace of the class, but if you keep up with it, you'll be set for the tests.
great professor. he explains things in a way that you understand them. drops so many assignments including 1 of the 5 exams. attendance is required but he uses his class as office hours so you dont need to pay attention. I ended with a 101 and didnt have to take the final. take him, you will not regret it.
MAN, THIS MAN IS JUST AMAZING. WORK AND YOULL GET WHAT YOU NEED, YOU CANT TAKE THE EASY WAY OUT FOR CALC 2, SO BETTER STUDY AND PREPARE FOR DFQ AND CALC 3.
Lectures are very high quality. Covers difficult homework problems suggested by students. Very charismatic. If you try hard, it will be rewarded. Tests do not blindside you with the questions. Lots of homework, but the pace is very manageable.
Mr. Connelly has a real enthusiasm for math and teaching, I actually enjoyed learning with him. Great professor. As long as you do everything he asks of you (which, compared to other professors' workloads, isn't really a whole lot), you should do fine on the midterms/final and pass the class without much hassle.
All around a great teacher.
Mr. C is very respected and cool. You can tell he really cares about making sure his students really get it. He was always available for extra help and quick to address any problems even after hours. He has a cute dog too!
Lots of homework but pearson MLP was a GREAT study resource. The homework & quizzes are very beneficial to the overall course. Practice exams were for extra credit and aligned well with actual exams. You practice in the same format the exams are in! His lectures are very helpful and he does take time to engage and answer questions.
Professor Connelly was an amazing professor for Pre Calculus. He made it pretty easy to understand by showing us proof of why certain equations worked the way they did. There is quite a lot of lectures, homework, and quizzes but it's doable! He also drops 4 homework, 4 quizzes, 6 clicker question days, a few video quizzes, and one exam! Recommend!
Mr. C was a great prof! He made our live class sessions fun with the occasional anecdote or story but still was able to answer everyone's questions and go over our work. The tests were fairly easy if you do the extra credit practice tests. He offers tons of help, such as dropping quiz/test grades, as well as some of your lowest hw/clicker qs.
The best professor I have had yet! He is very friendly and really loves what he teaches. Very understanding and cares about the success of his students. He assigns a lot of work but absolutely none of it is busywork. Expectations are VERY clear for his exams. Also, he talked me into becoming a math major, so there's that. This guy rules.
Absolutely my fav teacher. The lectures are online so you watch then before class and he answers all of your homework questions. You can get extra credit up to 4% of your final grade. It really wasnt that hard, just a little time consuming but it was 4 credits. Just study a bit for the exams and youre gonna be fine.
Professor Connelly was amazing! There was a lot of work for this class, such as video lectures with questions, quizzes and homework every week. However, he puts a due date for the lecture quizzes so its less hard to fall behind. He also gives two chances for the lecture quizzes and infinite tries for the homework and quizzes.
Absolutely outstanding professor. He was always available for help and made the content easy to understand. Funny, kind, and clear when conveying the course content, he opened up several opportunities for students to progress strongly in the course. Connelly is definitely my favorite professor at USF thus far. I definitely recommend him!
He was one of my favorite math teachers, very knowledgeable about the topic and can answer any question. I would definitely recommend him! (I am typically not one to like math and I liked this class)!
Connelly is overall not that bad of a teacher, he reviews the material and will answer questions outside of class. BUT, I would only take this class if you like being spoken to in a condescending tone and being picked on when you ask questions. Connelly is one of those teachers that likes power and holding it over you, especially when its grades.
I find math easy so the class was not hard for me but if you are not good at math he does a great job at explaining concepts. He had videos on Youtube which is how he teaches this class. During the live session of the class, he would go over homework questions. He also had clicker questions so attending class was important. Drops the lowest test.
If you get the chance to take him, do it. He actually likes teaching and is really good at doing so. All his expectations are clear and all due dates are available on the first day of class. Easy class to pass if you watch lecture and do the work.
Dr. Connelly truly is a caring professor and a great guy. Summer B precalc online, very fast-paced course with overwhelming work. If any review mentioned he was condescending, that is probably because kids asked him the same question about test grades like 30 times, his patience got tested. Tough class, he knows what he is doing though, best math T
He was the best instructor I've ever had. He did a reverse classroom style where you watched his lectures on youtube before class and then he spends class time going over any questions you have. If you don't put in the work, you won't succeed. He made this very difficult course understandable and I wish I could take him again for Calc 3.
Mr. Connelly is very goofy and a fun teacher to have. He gives a very fair amount of homework and is very clear on his expectations. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss his lecture you have to make it up with online video quizzes to makeup for lost participation points in class. Overall a great teacher!
He's all in all a great professor. Ready to help you whenever you need, with whatever you need. Someone said that he speaks to you in a condescending tone, which is not true at all. They were probably salty or something. But yeah I'd definitely take his class again.
He is awful. I promise you, don't take his course. He doesn't teach. He has made my college experience terrible with all the stress his class brings. Save your self this guy stinks.
His lesson structure is based off of mainly definitions. Dont take this class with him if you need to go through practice problems (trial and error) to learn and succeed .
Connelly is a really great teacher, great humor, clear explanations of concepts, empathetic towards students during the harder chapters, and gives extra credit each test w 2 practice exams. Homework is due Friday and Sunday nights but you get to work on all the assignments ahead of time if you really wanted to. Even has a discord server to help.
He is a very very good teacher and he truly cares about his students. He is quite witty and funny and I love his way of teaching. Even though I am generally decent at math, he does a pretty good job explaining the concepts so all students can understand them. Would highly recommend taking his class. Be sure to do the work or you will struggle.
Hes a great teacher! He does go a little fast through some of the lectures but its not too bad. Tons of opportunities to keep your grade up, and he always willing to work through problems with you if you dont understand them.
Amazing professor and a good guy. He is always willing to help and cares about the success of his students. He tries to make the lectures interesting. He gives extra credit by giving practice exams for each test. The practice tests are very helpful to study for the tests. There is a good amount of homework, but it is manageable.
The best prof ive had so far! Hes funny and passionate about what hes doing. His class has a lot of HW but he offers extra credit and drops the lowest exam. He doesnt like silly questions and may joke about it. He really wants you to understand the material and not just pass the exam. Smart, passionate, hilarious - best professor at USF!
This class was great for my first college math class! I got an A in the class but I went to many, many tutoring sessions. I definitely had to work for the A in the class as I am not the best at math. As long as you do super well on the tests, you'll be fine. the lowest test grade is dropped. I got a 68 on my first exam and still ended up with an A
This class had lots of homework and goes pretty fast paced. He's great at teaching the material and has his own YouTube channel where you can review material that you didn't understand in class or if you missed class. The lectures and homework definitely prepare you for the exams but studying is a must.
literally dont take him. save yourself. dont trust all the other ratings on here like I did. Assigns an overload amount of work. Literally makes you watch youtube videos and doesnt teach the class. Every day you will have work for his class, and have assignments due even on Saturdays and Sundays.
Hes definitely intimidating to ask questions to but overall really knows what hes talking about and explains concepts as concisely and accurately as possible, coming from someone who isnt great at math he made it relatively easy. Would recommend.
Mr.Connelly is a good teacher overall however, the amount of work he gives is insane. You will be so focused on his class and trying to get everything done. He does not do formula sheets, or curves, or drop test. If you do all the work you will learn however, the amount of work is just not due-able for an engineering student.
Does not teach his class, instead gives extremely slow-paced youtube videos that are impossible to watch without falling asleep. His class composes of group packets done during class and mylab assignments that must be done after class on campus. He does give a significant amount of extra credit and drops grades nonstop so passing is easy at least.
Great professor, he knows the material and wants you to succeed. His only downside is the INSANE workload, 5 exams (4 regular and the final) as well as multiple quizzes throughout the semester every Friday and sometimes on Thursdays as well. I recommend him if you want to learn but if you're lazy STAY FAR BTW NONE OF THE EXAMS ARE DROPPED
All of Connelly's lectures are on YouTube, his channel is MathWithMrC. I personally found his lectures confusing and disorganize (meaning not clear on why or what types of questions we'll see from this chapter). He has ridiculous amount of work. Every week you'll have around 50 hw problems, watch lecture videos of 1 hour and take notes and quizzes.
If you want to learn, he is the best professor you will find. If you do exactly what he asks you will get at least a B and will learn everything from Calc II, but if you aren't ready to give 100% in this class, it's better to pick a different professor because you will fail. He gives 4 exams, 1 final, quizzes every week, and homework every class.
There is no normality to this course, and I can promise you that the reviews that claim his class is good were BEFORE he changed it to the way it is set up currently. It is an overall DISASTER, especially on his canvas page. You must teach yourself before you show up to a class from his YouTube videos. Do not do this to yourself it's a trap!
As much as I hate to write him a good review, Robert Connelly was easily one of the best professors I have ever had. His class isn't for the faint of heart, but if you can manage the fast pace and heavy workload, I highly recommend him. His class helped me develop a fantastic work ethic and made my math classes proceeding far easier.
I took calc 2 and 3 with Mr. C and can say that regardless of the amount of work he provides, you cannot find a teacher that will prepare you better for the math in advanced science/engineering classes. Is his workload a lot/borderline unreasonable? Yes, it is. Will you learn everything you need to succeed later on? Yes, you will. Just take him.
Does not explain a thing just gives videos and expects people to understand with little to no explanation of the concepts.
You can tell that Mr.C is very passionate about math and his classes however the amount of pessimism and full on just condescending tone he always portrays brings down the experience. He will always make you feel at fault and not support you in your questions. His class is structured one way and gives no room of freedom and is handled sloppily.
I took Calculus 3 over the summer, and it was the hardest class I have ever taken because of the pace. It is completed within 6 weeks, and it is a super intensive course, however, I would not have taken and/or passed with any other professor. Professor Connelly is very kind and understanding and just overall a great person and professor.
He is passionate about math, but very condescending. Mr. C assigns a large amount of work for this class. His lectures are very short, and do not cover all the material on the tests. The only way to do well is to teach yourself the material through YouTube videos. He stated his tests are harder than other classes. I would not recommend taking him.
Calc 2 was a total nightmare. No lectures - you have to watch his videos on youtube and then take canvas quizzes on them. Grades notes every class which is annoying. Weekly in person quizzes, ridiculous amount of homework. This class had me losing my mind, I took it along with 5 other engineering classes which was a gigantic mistake. Just don't.
Tons and tons of work. Like, 20 grades a week. Very particular about the format of work on packets. Can be kind of condescending, and you have to teach yourself the entire course using videos.
I took professor Connelly over the summer for calc3. It was faster paced than normal but still doable. There was a lot of homework, but they were necessary for practice. The tests were not too difficult and the questions came directly from the book. His lectures were useful but, I found the in-class activities to be the most helpful.
Lots of assignments. He drops 5 lowest grades from each category and 1 test out of the 5 you'll take in the course. The class requires a lot of work but if you're able to put in the time you'll do well. Each class you get in a group to work on a packet that covers the lecture you had to watch prior. He's a nice guy but can be harsh when explaining.
Mr. C is the coordinator for all of the calc classes. He may be a good prof but he really messed up the entire system. He started a flipped classroom and everyone learns off of his lectures online. There is way too much homework outside of class and the class is extremely fast paced. All of the precalc profs suck because of this flipped class.
Worst professor I have had by far as he is condescending and cocky when you talk to him. There are also a bunch of assignments every week that we are expected to do. Also if you ask him a question expect to get ridiculed in front of the class for it.
he is not accommodating at all and very rude when you ask him for accommodations. If you ask for something it will end up with you getting yelled at and humiliated by Connelly. Not understanding what so ever.
Only good thing about this class is getting 4 points added to grade at end of semester if you haven't missed 4 classes. Multiple quizzes every week, 4 tests and a final, one dropped. Begged for good review so he can relieve a promotion. Gets mad when questions are asked when you don't understand. Class is taught through his YouTube videos.
He gets upset when you don't understand something. Hate how the class is taught through youtube videos. I have met many great math teachers that will help, but this professor is not one of them.
You're going to be stuck with this guy no matter what in precalc b/c everyone has to watch his videos. It's a flipped classroom, so get ready to teach yourself the material through mylab. He's very condescending and expects you to already know the material if you ask for help. He'll call you out in front of the lecture size class if ur on ur phone.
I am taking Mr. C for calculus ii and I was very disappointed with this class. All of the lectures are YouTube videos and the videos have ads on them (how is that even legal?). He talks in a very condescending tone to students, and I'm pretty sure he writes his own reviews because all of the good ones do not look like they were written by students.
Everyone hates this class, but if you have a decent understanding of algebra it's not that hard. Just do the myLab stuff and you will be fine, the tests are made up from random questions in the quizzes. The teacher does not help very much, he can be very condescending and will get annoyed if you ask for help. There's a lot of homework every week.
the "flipped classroom" style was not helpful for me at all. if you ask him questions while doing the worksheet, he may slightly berate you if it was something he went over in the review. acts like a middle school teacher if you are doing anything but having full attention on him while he is talking.
Most of the class is structured in a "flip-classroom", so video lectures at home and group work in class with extra explanations from him. Each week there is a certain load of homework combined with video notes, my-lab stuff, and assignments. He really encourages students to actually learn the material to use it later, not memorize it for the test.
basically watch YouTube videos and teach yourself. Very condescending if you ask him a question. Not very helpful except the mylab assignments. Attendance is graded so beware of that. Also doesn't make any accommodations whatsoever.
He is not nice, and it's clear that he isn't interested in helping students. You teach yourself through his YouTube videos, there are lots. Ton of assignments and he expects you to spend 12 hours a week on his work outside of class. Most tests weren't hard, one is dropped. Multiple dropped assignments. Wouldn't take again, but not too difficult.
Definitely take Mr. C if you can he teaches conceptually and everything sticks so much better, he may seem harsh at first but its for a good reason and if you do everything he says you will pass the class I promise. He also drops a ton of grades at the end. Set reminders for smart lab work and note quizzes its easy to lose track of when their due.
Overall the course is not difficult. The professor made it way more difficult than it had to be. If you have questions he is neither understanding nor patient. If you're struggling that is "your fault' and he just tells you to study more and put more time into the class. Relies way too heavily on his videos and his TA's, does little to no teaching.
I didn't bother watching the lecture videos he post on his youtube tbh and just looked at solutions throughout the exam and quiz guidelines and I learned perfectly that way but that learning approach isn't for everyone. I like how the professor gave lots of quiz extra credits as students were struggling in class. His exam guidelines were helpful.
Really liked him. I think I preferred lecture videos prior to class bc in class, we did group activities and those went great. He and other peer leaders are there to help. The mathlab material can be a little much but its doable. Theres unlimited attempts on mathlab hw and quizzes, and 2 attempts for each test. You also get some grades dropped.
This Professor is great. He makes it very clear as to what to expect on the test and quizzes. He gives you reviews that include lots of questions that are extremely helpful! If anything, focus on learning the material then doing these review problems. Do not be afraid to email him questions. He will answer them! Office hours are also the best.
The class was very heavily focused on youtube videos and smart lab. Multiple hours wasted each week on quizzes. Got through without watching any videos just looked at review questions before each test. Tests not too hard mostly multiple choice. Many dropped grades. Very time consuming class but overall not too hard. Be prepared to spend many hours.
Be prepared to do work inside and outside of class if you wanna pass. There's a bunch of homework so I recommend getting a headstart before the start of the semester (but I didn't and still did well). A lot of grades are dropped and there's a chance for extra credit if you show up to most classes. You will def do well if you get the work done.
Mr C is a great professor. He provides all the material you need to succeed in his class, but be prepared to put in hours and hours of study. His grading is exceptional; he gives plenty of partial credit on his exams. I recommend him if you really want to have a solid knowledge of calculus, but I'm glad I don't have to retake it.
his class structure makes you do work and get into the habit of practicing math, most professors want students to read before class for the lecture, Connelly set up videos online and custom notetaking templates due the night before the lecture. it keeps you on track and you get easy 100s. if you struggle w studying outside of class pick him
He had open office hours, in person and on discord, and knew the material taught. His lectures are flipped classroom, take notes at home and work on questions in class. The class is test heavy and very difficult. The questions seemed a lot harder than the practice problems. There is no extra credit or curve. This class took up majority of my time.
Mr. C taught us mainly through yt videos which were extremely unhelpful and confusing. In class, the packets were much easier than whatever he tried to show us. Smartlab is ridiculous, but the tests are much easier than he tries to prepare you for. Also one test is dropped, easy A is you have a little bit of understanding. You can tell he enjoys.
This class was a LOT of work, Smart Lab heavy. Don't disregard the HW and quizzes though, they are very much reflective of the exams, if not easier, so spend your time on them. Professor Connelly was great and cares, one time during class activity he sat down with a girl in front of me who had given up and talked her through her problems.
Mr. Connelly really cares about instilling a genuine understanding and intuition for mathematics within his students. However, his class can be a lot of work, with tons of homework due each week. Nonetheless, his class was still very enjoyable and valuable.
awful experience. He is not a good teacher
Professor Connelly is a very fun professor to take but you HAVE TO put in the work for his course, If you show up for the lectures and study as he tells you to you will do just fine in his class. He typically starts the lecture with a dad joke to grab your attention which I found enjoyable.
Take him if you want to learn the subject. Don't take him if you are not willing to make his class a top priority. You would need to go to each and every class cause he has points for attending and doing class activities. You will have a quiz every Friday which is like a mini-exam. Exam graded 110/100. Doesn't drop any exam. Doesn't curve.
This is not an easy class. You will spend countless hours on this class and easily solve over 500 problems. Seriously, I filled up 2 entire notebooks.I recommend this guy for people going into differential or other calc heavy courses. Otherwise, if you're doing CS like me take someone else. Overall excellent Professor!
Great professor and class! He uses the flipped-classroom structure, where you watch and take notes on the lecture videos outside of class, and then do an activity for that content in class. He also utilizes the USF SMART LAB, requiring 2+ hours of lab attendance each week. This incentivizes more frequent study habits. Very lenient with grade drops.
He's very willing to help and has plenty of office hours. His course is flipped classroom so you have to watch some videos at home to know how to work on the problems in class. Also, we had quizzes every Fridays but he announced what exact problems would be on the quizzes so it's pretty easy to earn extra credtis. Very heavy coursework but worth it
An insane amount of work which includes weekly quizzes, mandatory notes, and lecture videos/quizzes. Exams are very difficult with 20% being challenge questions that you have to memorize. He's condescending and rude. He's good at teaching, If your goal is to learn then take him just don't expect a good grade without 10 hours a week of work w/class.
If you are looking to actually learn the material and be prepared for further math classes such as calculus, definitely take him. However, if you just need a math class, and won't progress any further in math, then beware of the amount of work his flipped class set up will take. I spent multiple hours a week on his assignments.
He guides his students throughout the course. He always prepares his students and tells them how to and what to prepare. I would take his class again. If every thing is done as he says, we can get A+ easily in this course.
Connelly is great. I typically struggle in math but I was able to do really well in calc 2 because of how he teaches the material. He is the rare exception of a GOOD flipped classroom. He can be a little condescending at times but if you can get by that he is certainly a great professor.
Uses video lectures on YouTube to teach and then activities in class to reinforce. Also assigns a ton of homework on WebAssign. Don't wait until the day it's due to start unless you have a couple hours to spare
Hands down the best professor at USF
Teachings made me actually understand pre calc compared to the teachers I had at hs. Loads of work, but I have never understood a math class better until now. Answered all questions I had & w/o making me feel dumb abt asking it.
Mr. C makes math accessible, regardless of your background knowledge in pre calculus/trig. His video lectures include proofs, and examples, meaning there is no reason as to why you shouldn't understand a concept. He assigns a considerable amount of homework...something vital in understanding a mathematical concept. I genuinely loved this class.
Took Connelly for Calc II. It's a flipped classroom, which was a red flag for me at the start but I decided to stick with it. I was pleased to find that Connelly's videos are surprisingly well produced and relevant to the class material. Dude also knows what he is talking about and how to teach the material. 10/10
Mr. Connelly was my first, and favorite professor at USF. Ended up taking like 4 of his math classes between 2017-2021, and he explained concepts so well that it made me, an engineering major, love math. Not to mention his dad jokes and random things he'd do in class. Very helpful outside of class as well and will help you succeed.
The BEST professor I had at USF. Connelly is so knowledgeable, and he made me love math. His class will make you work! I did 20-40 homework problems a week and had weekly quizzes with four exams. You will learn so much from him though! If you need more calculus, TAKE HIM, you will get the best foundation ever. I wish he could teach me every class.
Many misleading reviews, worst teacher I've had by far. His lectures are all online in the format of extremely long and boring videos. Little to no real teaching. Depends on mylab and Ta's entirely. 10+ hours of work outside of class. Talks to students in a very condescending/unprofessional way, Rather ask a Ta than him bc of how rude he responds.
Amazing professor, he truly understand math in a way that you may have never seen before. Expectations for the material are clear; easily accessibly outside of class if you have questions. But he does come off as condescending at times. If you are a math/engineering major I 100% recommend, he explains material extremely well.
best math prof yet - can be condescending but wants his students to succeed - vid lecture, canvas quiz, smartlab hw & quiz, 4 exams, & 1 final. lowest exam grade dropped & 4 grades in each dropped - fast responder to emails: communicate w him ASAP - slightly slow grader - 2 hrs min. in smartlab - looks for shortcuts/easy ways to remember formulas
beware of the workload. if youre going into a more math savvy major he is good. knows the material, however, if youre like me and just need a math credit and arent amazing at it, dont take him. much time spent in the smartlab, online lectures before class lengthy if you dont have a good attention span. he is condescending and cocky. TA's helpful.
i think i would rather be hit by a car than take this class again. the only people who passed this class were the people that already took a calc class. robert does not teach. it is an online class that sometimes has a lecture hall. nothing is explained in the lectures either. just worksheets.
I've read many complaints of 'too much homework', but the homework is more-so 'graded studying'. Plus, it's so useful and so similar to the exam that I've had to spend minimal time studying and still ended with an A+. It IS tedious towards the end, so photo math it all once you understand it. He drops a lot of grades so passing is easy. Great Prof.
Mr C can come off a little condescending at times, but he really just wants to make sure his students understand the material. He gives lots of extra credit and drops many things. Don't listen to the misleading reviews about Mr. C, the only way you can do bad in this class if is you aren't willing to put in the effort for it. Which isn't much.
(2 courses I've taken) Mr. C is a great professor. He's extremely knowledgeable, and you can tell how much he cares about the success of his students. He by far has been one of the best math professors I've had. Math isn't my strongest subject by any means. Be prepared to apply yourself in this class. You have to study weekly in order to do well!
Mr C is a great teacher. He is a direct reflection of you as a student. If you care about the class and your grade he will also care. This is university there are no handout so you will have to put in effort. He's very easy to reach out of class and gives lots of extra credit.
Great teacher, just make sure to stay on the top of the assignments as once you fall behind it can be raelly challenging to catch up. He is very easy to talk to outside of class and you can tell he truly cares about student success. Its also a lot of learning on your own.
The lecture videos do a few easy problems but when you take quizzes and tests in the SMART Lab (where you have to do all the work in the library) the questions are much harder. Class is so much work easily have to spend 10+ hours a week to keep up if math is not your strong suit. Very difficult class even though its just an intro class. Gives EC.
He really wants to help you learn and understand rather than memorize and forget. The only downside of the class was the smartlab. You will be doing work for this class almost every day of the week but if you go to class you should easily get a good grade.
I would also rather be hit by a bus than take this class again. Overcomplicated and overexplained things, his in-class activities felt useless, the only reason I went to class was for the extra credit. He also put random questions that he never taught on exams. One of the worst math professors I have ever taken.
"Amazing lectures" is a disservice to the nature and quality of the content provided during class hours
Really hard 4 credit class because of the work load. That said, you could not find a better professor that sets you up for success. Always willing to help and is extremely patient. Genuinely matches the effort you put in. Great extra credit opportunities just for simply showing up. Drops lowest test score (including final).
Professor Connelly's MAC1147 class is a good challenge, but he genuinely wants students to succeed. The workload is heavy, but using Unstuckstudy and staying on top of the assignments makes it manageable. Overall, a solid class with a caring professor.
Robert Connelly is what you'd want in a math teacher. He's very good at teaching and is always willing to help students when they need it. I went to some of his office hours and they were very helpful in clearing up any confusion I had. He is very inspirational and his passion for teaching is prominent. His class made Calculus 1 bearable and easy.
Very good professor that makes Calculus accessible to those who want to put in the work. Watch the lecture videos carefully, work through the homework using your notes, and then make sure you can do every problem on the exam guidelines without any resources. Do all that and you are sure to pass, and probably will get an A
Flipped classroom. If you watch the lecture videos and take notes you will do good.
The professor is good at teaching , but the lectures can feel like a lot because there's so much. The exams are tough, and it was hard at first. Although CramBetter helped, since it's great for breaking down complicated topics in this class. If I had started using it earlier, I probably would have done better on the first couple of exams.
Unsure if he still does this, but you watch his YouTube lectures and take notes on your own then go to class and complete activities. Tries his best to make math easy to understand so ask him questions. Put in the effort and you will get a good grade. If you want an easy class or don't care about math, don't take him.
DO NOT take his class unless you are some math whiz... cuz this man expects his students to be like young Sheldon. Jumps into "teaching" by making us watch videos online that are extremely fast paced with little to no explanations for most of it. Super cocky and not really empathetic towards students, easily 15 hours of work for this class a week.
Mr. C have 2 lecture videos weekly which you really, really need to watch (around 1 hour each). Classes are time for applications of what your learned on his videos with him and TAs answering questions. Weekly quizzes are not hard, exams are hard but on those weeks no lecture videos. Consider your transcript done if he ever catches you cheating.
TAKE MR. C. I have taken Calculus 1 before and had to withdraw, but with Mr. C I am doing extremely well. He is very involved and passionate. He knows what he's doing and he wants us to as well. His classes score much higher than any other professor's. He sets you up for success. It is a flipped classroom. Great prof, makes a hard class easier
He's great, just study the material he gives and you'll be fine. Weekly quizzes but exactly like the weekly review. The exams are extremely similar to the exam reviews. Again study and you'll be fine.
Disclaimer, Professor Connelly is definitely not the professor for everyone - he can be tough on students and a little intimidating to approach, but personally, I found his teaching style helpful. He has a flipped class and he explains the material starting with the foundations and reasons why things work a certain way, though it can be confusing.
This is a flipped class. I thought this class was going to be easy; no, it is not. However, this professor made it somewhat easier than I thought. He's kind of intimidating, but he has really good lecture videos that helped me pass. The class is hard, though I will warn you, but the homework and participation grade helped me, I think.
Course set up is different but it works very well. Will give a lot of homework and videos to watch but if you do what he assigns and follow the reviews you will easily get an A. One of my favorite professors I have ever had.
Mr. C is an incredible teacher who truly cares. I'm NOT a math person, but he helped me turn things around. Do the Pearson reviews because they make the tests easy. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it helps with extra credit. Smart Labs and quizzes are HARD, but worth it. Be ready to work, and you'll succeed! Mr. C is an angel! GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
This class was taken during the Summer and, honestly, was very rushed. However, I don't blame the professor for the amount of homework that was given, as it was heavily influenced by the school's policy. Besides that, Professor Connelly gives great short lectures and knows how to teach a class effectively.
I love him. He is great and you will pass.
Teaches a lot of content, the videos are helpful but there is quite a bit of homework. Hard class but very informative.
Probably the best professor I took at USF. I took both precalc and calc w/ him and he was amazing each time. If calc is anything like how it was when I took it, there are weekly quizzes every Friday. Not hard at all to get a good score if you study. He really does care about his students, and passing shouldn't be a problem if you put in the work.
He is quite a character, but not in a good way. Although he is the best calculus teacher at USF, he's self-absorbed and stubborn. He blames students for their struggles rather than reflecting on his teaching style. His grading system is flawed, too, as exams are heavily weighted, leaving quizzes and homework with little impact on overall grades.
I had Mr. C for precalc over the summer and for calc I this semester and he is a great professor but he is very intimidating and condescending at times yet he is very passionate and wants his students to succeed. If you go to office hours and express clear effort to do good he is nicer. If you need calc hes great but not for the faint of heart lol.
The class is reverse which i really thought i was going to hate but ended up being really nice because i could ask questions in class. There is an assignment every class and a quiz every friday but this sounds like i am lying but they really did help. He definitely cares more about you actually learning so if you need calc 2 i definitely recommend.
Connelly is a good professor for precalculus, however you should look somewhere else for calculus 1. Weekly quizzes 60 points each. Heavy workload, 20-30 practice problems for quizzes each week and homework due after lecture at 11:59. Exam and quiz averages were consistently in the 60s. If you've never taken a calc class before def steer clear.
The class is a flipped class. You have to watch videos at home and fill out notes. There is an activity every class except on Friday which are quiz days. He gives a make your own practice test, but when studying to take the test I would do the activity problems and homework problems instead of the practice test.
