Professor Crawford is one of the best profs I have ever had. His lectures are delightful and he mixes that in with a nice sense of humour. He really knows his MNC's well! Ask him any MNC, and he can tell you everything about it! His exam was fair.
One of the best instructors I've ever had. Very knowledgeable, helpful, nice, funny.
Crawford is one of the best if not the best prof i had at ubc. Very clear, interesting and fair. Great sense of humour and made class a joy to attend. But watch out for his marking on papers!!! He'll rip you apart in his comments!
Awesome course. Too bad he's not teaching any other poli sci course. Midterm and final were fair. Great prof, knows his stuff and isn't afraid to give his own opinion...
Rob is a cool prof - easygoing, great sense of humour, and knows his stuff when it comes to teaching his class. I would say he is a pretty hard marker but is always willing to discuss any discrepancies. An all around great prof!
you're not very nice.
An extremely knowledgeable prof. Though his marking his a little hard, he definitely does reward any sign of hard work. You may not get the answer bang on, but if you show knowledge of the subject, he will reward handsomely.
Passionate about what he teaches and an incredibly intelligent man. Relates to students, mentions his kids, and creates a sense of realism, connection, and concern between student and prof. Best lecturer in arts one program by far.
Is always extremely busy with millions of things such as his adorable dog and his kids but still finds the time to debate about international theory on any given day. Fair marker and is so animated and hilarious - such an enjoyable class to be in.
Very interesting lectures, exams are rather tough but his marking is fair, although his paper comments (not necessairly the mark itself) may make you wanna cry;)). If he ever decides to become a standup comic, he'd probably do well too. Take this course!
Professor is scattered and disorganized with his lectures. He goes off topic so much it is hard to follow what he is talking about. Very intelligent man--but needs to get his thoughts organized. Lecture style needs touch ups. Hard marker-not justified
A dynamic thinker, communicates well in lectures and discussions. He runs his class in very pragmatic, flexible way, and that wasn't always appreciated by everyone. As for marking I found him quite fair - no soft touch, but he's willing to reward effort.
Funny Guy, Knows his Sh*t. Tuff marker, especially on the midterm. Really work hard on your paper or final. He's a hard-left postmodernish thinker, read his book and cater to his views on your essay. Great class, probably not an average booster though.

He is excellent. I wrote this just to respond to the last comment: Dr. Crawford is not a postmodernist. His views are slightly to the left for IR, but not at all in any other field. He wants to broaden the concerns of IR as a US dominated field. So he includes the diversity which is political theory
The arts one crew and I have pondered if he may have an addiction to crack because the amount of ideas that man holds in his head seems inhuman. So inspiring, so funny, so great. I must also say that the ppl who don't like him seem to do badly in his class- is that maybe just cus they're stupid?
how much does this guy know? wow. he's an amazing prof. hard but fair marker who is willing to help students whenever they need it. seminars were great cuz he let students control direction. definitely an awesome lecturer. if ur thinking about arts one, join crawford's seminar. u wont regret it.
Uber-smart, approachable and hilarious. The course is intense, and he definitely speaks at very intellectually challenging level. The course is not for everyone. He is definately not an easy maker (challenges you to work very hard). Shows you that you know more than you think.
I took Arts one back in 2001, and he still stands out as one of the best teachers I have at at UBC. Encourages independent thought and will challenge your ideas to the core. It's fun to challenge his ideas, although he knows too much to change his opinions!!! Take his seminar class!
good prof... funny, and very smart. approachable and fair.
just awesome. take anything he teaches! intense guy but fun!
a wicked course, he is very clear and concise and is an excellent lecturer, likely one fo the best.
he is one of the best professors i've had in my life and i'm sure that i will remember him that way for years to come. i love the class but it is really his intensity, knowledge, humour and personal dynamic that brings the material alive. i leave his lectures feeling high on ideas and with my mind racing. definitely a good thing.
amaaaazing professor. his dog is adorable too. he's willing to help students and marks hard but fair. take arts one. take his seminar. it's fantastic.
Awesome prof - he is not only clearly passionate and wickedly brilliant, but he is approachable and reasonable. I didn't find his marking hard at all but I think he challenges his students and marks them fairly on their efforts. On a personal note I love his Smiths references as they are my favorite band and it helps me to remember things.. GREAT
Great Professor, interesting class. Easy if you do all the readings and have an angle to argue or have taken previous political theory classes before. E-mails take time and it's hard to find him outside of class, but go to class and do the readings (which aren't much) and you'll get a B for sure.
One of my favorite profs at UBC. I have been here for 3 and a half years and few compare to Crawford. This guy used to be an auto mechanic, and know he is a bomb professor. Be careful though, he isn't the easiest.
one of the best yet. a legend
An interesting person. He kinda a neo-oldschool prof (maybe because he is a neo-realist/critical theorist, terms that you will become all to familiar with even though this course shouldn't be focused on political theory). That was a lengthy parenthesis. He is almost impossible to get into contact with, he doesn't know what email is.
FAR from the best professor at UBC. Although the subject was interesting, his lectures were not. Very dry, not engaging, and even his rather peculiar sense of humour didn't help either. Hard to get in touch with, VERY late and harsh marking. We didn't get our papers till after the final exam, and they were worth 50% of the grade. Ridiculous.
A very good prof. who seems to have seen better teaching days. He is still brilliant and interesteing but might have gotten a little lazy with keeping up with papers, lectures, and readings. Still, I would recommend his class and ArtsOne - take HIS seminar... he is the best one. Works well with students, funny, laid back. Marks harshly but fair
1 word to describe him: incredible. i took crawford's class over 3 years ago and still no professor can compare to him. his lectures are nothing short of amazing and you will learn a lot without even realizing it. he can make sense of the most complicated philosophical idea and is a prof who is not to be missed. take his class if you have the chanc
I think that he is a really smart man with a lot to teach his students. I thought he did a good job explaining the various theories we studied, and his lectures were very engaging. He doesn't "dumb down" material, and if you are willing to work hard I think you will get a lot out of this class. The only downside = he's bad at e-mail/office hours.
Best Arts one prof, hands down. If you take arts one, choose Crawford! Best decision of my 1st year. He's a great lecturer, entertaining, and explains things clearly and carefully, to help you understand the material. He's just one of those amazing profs. Other arts one profs don't compare.
He's funny, he's dead pan, he's cool.

I took this class as an exchange student during the summer term 2004. Absolutely amazing teacher. I learned a lot from this short 3 week summer class. He won't let you down. After three years, I actually remember most of the lectures!
Crawford is hands down the best prof in the Arts 1 programme, and is arguably one of the best I've had EVER. He knows so much about so many different things, makes lectures/seminars fun, and cares about his students. Awesome.
Amazing prof. Fascinating and nuanced lectures.. It's impossible to win an argument with him. His anecdotes are hilarious. Though his classes are packed with diehard IR majors, it's possible to do very well. Great Readings..take him!!
Going to Robert Crawford's class didnt need any effor. He has been the most interesting prof i've had and he made Arts One the best decision I've ever made. If you get a chance to take his class don't hesitate. His marking is hard but absolutely fair. He lets you know how you can make it better. Take advantage of his office hours. EXCELLENT!
brilliant professor, no other choice for arts one.
One of the best lecturers I've had at UBC. Very knowledgeable and his humour helps you through some of the less exciting material. His marking is tough but fair. Good amount of material, learned a lot.
Awesome prof! As other have commented, hilarious and pertinent anecdotes. Lectures are to the point, and he always drops hints and repeats material that will show on exams- so come to class! . Readings are generally much more helpful and interesting than typical of poli/IR readings. One of the best profs in the department by far.
an absolutely incredible prof, i feel so lucky i randomly selected him. knows his history and politics to the most minute facts, is a great prof, very clear and straight forward. peps up his lectures with stylish humor and helps his students out alot. fair marking but brutally honest
Mr. Crawford is absolutely fantastic. It was a privilege to be in his class, as I looked forward to it every week. He is absolutely hilarious and I learnt something new every time I went to class. He is pretty tough but extremely fair.
i have a huge crush on this professor.. he said hi to me today! (fingerz crossed).. probably the smartest man i know/will ever know? MUST TAKE
An excellent professor. He knows so much about the world, he is like an encyclopedia. He has shaped my interest in IR. He is also funny, nice, and if you put the work in, you can succeed. How to do well: Talk to him, go to his office hours! Be prepared for every class (readings etc). Use his corrections for your next assignment.
AMAZING lecturer, and one the best in the department! Fair marker, and he does his own marking (no TA). Hilarious anecdotes at times, which gives life to his lectures. Do the readings. It will be an advantage.
Fantastic, hilarious and brilliant ? choose his seminar! He's a Poli Sci guy, but his lectures on literature are equally enlightening/lucid/entertaining! Incredibly fair marker ? open to all points of view, gives his own point of view but doesn't proselytize, feedback is always helpful and constructive. Awesome guy all around ? pick his seminar!
Crawford really knows his stuff. Choose his seminar for ARTS One! Hilarious British sense of humour that lightens up the mood. Not the greatest at emails but discussions are fantastic and it's great getting to know him. Gives honest feedback on papers, fair marks. Not great for quiet, shy students.
Fantastic prof - definitely the best Arts One B lecturer and an amazing seminar/tutorial prof. He has a great sense of humour and dry wit but doesn't hesitate to look at the readings with a critical eye. Super helpful in tutorials and makes you want to improve - I only regret I don't care for Poli Sci because otherwise I'd be all over his classes!
really helpful during seminar and office hours, gives REALLY engaging and relevant lectures, smart and sweet.
Excellent lecturer. Very engaging and open to questions and/or comments. Can get sidetracked at times from the main themes of each lecture, but his comments are always useful and insightful. Difficult course but fair marker. Readings are very helpful and he does not overload you with dense reads. Great sense of humour! You won't want to miss class!
Can't say I'm too happy with the course. Lectures are fun, but also scattered and incoherent (not because of the difficulty - but yes, you better really love IR theory). Not sure what the expectations are. Poor course structure. I felt he graded a bit unfairly. Apparently good in office hours but will not respond to email. You may like him, though.
Clear lecturer, although I wish that he would post the slides. The course was challenging, but very fair. A lot of reading, and complex concepts, but overall, a great class and a great prof.
Very entertaining lecturer & very knowledgeable on the subject. Not very much structure to the course though. Overall a good class but probably moreso if you already have an interest in IR theory.
I would really recommend taking arts one with crawford. he's a fantastic prof and a really fun and interesting guy!
Are you about to take ARTS ONE? Did you make Crawford your seminar prof? Then congratulations! You easily have the best professor in the world. He's hilarious, fun, and *gasp* educational in everything he says. Even during the summer, I found myself wishing that I were sitting in one of his lectures. He's that good.
Fantastic professor! If you like IR and are willing to do a bit of work, the class is not easy or hard, but a perfect mix, then you will enjoy Bob. He can somehow make a lecture about post-modernism funny and profoundly interesting at the same time
Fantastic prof. Interesting and engaging lectures and seminars. Always keeps things fresh. Genuinely cares/is interested in student view points. Hard marker but very constructive and insightful. Put effort into your papers and interactions and you will get a solid mark. Also, he's straight up hilarious. Extremely happy I got him as a prof.
I feel extremely fortunate to have had him as a teacher - incredibly engaging, helpful, knowledgable, and funny. I intend to take as many classes with him as possible in the upcoming years.
Amazing, hilarious, very engaging!
Fair marker, provides great constructive criticism, encourages participation, and inspires dialogue. Very effective teacher. Compared to what else I've heard for Arts One, he's probably the best seminar prof. It also doesn't hurt that he is very understanding and lenient towards first years. favourite professor yet!
Extremely funny but genuine. He really cares about his students and offers insightful comments about your writing. Take Arts01 with him! You will not regret it. This prof was the highlight of my first year.
Dr. Crawford is a great lecturer, brings in humour and anecdotes. He does tend to go on tangents and get behind in the material. Course was confusing. It was a theoretical IR approach to multinational corporations and we didn't learn very much about actual MNCs and their relationship to governments in the world. Difficult expectations for paper.
He's amazing! So funny best prof I've ever had !! Definitely take this class again
Excellent prof, very engaging, and always on his toes. He knows all his material exceptionally well. His slides are informative, but his lectures are always full of so much more additional information and valuable insights. Midterm was totally fair, and his expectations all around were very clear. I'm definitely going to miss his class.
If you don't come to class, prepare to be entirely lost. The slides are rarely relevant and we never got through an entire powerpoint. Dr. Crawford knows his material so well though that if you pay attention to his lectures, and sift aside the tangents, you will learn a lot.
Crawford is a gem, trust me, you'll have fun.
Rob is great. The best prof I have had at UBC on a personal level. His marking can be tough at times, but is always fair. Would recommend him to anyone with interest in Political Sciences or International Relations.
Crawford is funny and down to earth. The course itself was really IR heavy and there were a lot of readings. Don't buy the reading package, it's expensive and the material can be found online. He is a very tough marker! Only got a good mark because of the TA. Lectures were boring. Wouldn't take unless you have an IR or economy background.
Prof. Crawford is very intelligent and can be funny. He openly admits his faults and knows that he goes off on tangents very often. His slides are very useful, but he hardly ever goes through them completely. you will feel lost if you don't attend lectures, they are helpful. Very fair marker with clear expectations. Midterm, paper, final and blogs
One of the best profs at UBC. Very cool guy on the personal level. Great class.
Prof. Crawford is a very interesting man who clearly has a brilliant mind! I wasn't a huge fan of his class because he can be rather scatterbrained and tends to take tangents away from his lecture. Those tangents were always fascinating, but if you need clear lecture structure I wouldn't recommend.
I would say he's a tough grader, but he's super nice and would really try to help you out when you need help. His lectures are SUPER entertaining and engaging!! I would say he is really knowledgeable, and I always attend his lectures rain or shine, despite my demanding agenda. He's an approachable and a very cool guy outside class too, enjoy!!
I found his lectures really hard to follow and unstructured. Every lecture seemed to last an age and I found he'd take about 10 minutes to explain a simple concept. He went off on so many tangents it was difficult to know what to take notes on and used so many unnecessary anecdotes. The readings were long and boring and dry and mostly unnecessary.
My favourite professor ever! He does go off in a tangent but if you listen carefully, theres a point hes trying to make. If you like learning, youd definitely enjoy his class. But if you go to class just caring about your grade, I dont think youd enjoy his lectures. Lectures seem complicated but hes a generous grader.
My favorite professor hands down. He is interesting, makes you engaged and makes you think critically. He grades fairly and his tests are fair. He allows for you to have a chance to get a good grade if you put in the effort and studied. He made me understand, love, and appreciate International Relations. He is also very funny XD
Crawford is a great lecturer, though he often goes on tangents and lags on the planned material. He encourages the class to chime in when necessary. But good lord is this man disorganized. He emailed us saying that a lot of the research papers he assigned to us were 'hard to mark', so he didn't feel the need to give us any info about the final.
Dr. Crawford is a really great speaker and motivating professor. You can tell he really does care about his students and the course, so if you have the opportunity I would thoroughly recommend any of his classes!
Good professor who knows how to keep a class engaged. Sometimes goes on a tangent but I always look forward to attending his lectures.
Rob is an amazing prof!!! He really cares about his students and I was lucky enough to be in his group for Arts One. He is a tough grader but you get to defend your papers before he marks them and he always gives great feedback.
Professor Crawford is incredibly knowledgeable, and yet still treats his students' ideas as equal to his own. He cares about your questions and goes out of his way to resolve student concerns. This class has a LOT of reading, but it is really interesting and helps you draw your own conclusions. If you're interested in this class, please take it!
Very interesting lectures! Crawford can make dry content more interesting. Lectures not mandatory but def recommended. Only downfall is the grade is made up of 3 things so if you do badly on one it's hard to make up for it
While prof. Crawford was respectful and insightful, he was NEVER available outside class, rarely responded to emails (most often wouldn't even read them), and was extremely late at returning assignments. In a class where there were no other TA's or people around to get help from, it really sucked.
Very understanding and genuinely cares for students. Robert's classes were always insightful with a good sense of humor. He's a fair grader but very hard to reach outside of class. Papers were rarely marked and returned on time. He definitely has had a tough year, though. I'm definitely glad that I took Arts One with him!
Taken a few classes with Crawford now and he's a gem. Makes boring content more interesting and gives good lecture. Lectures are important for getting a good grade. No pranks on his exams, they're all fair in relation to content. Easily accessible outside class, but we were pretty behind in content
STOP GIVING THIS MAN PRAISE. He's a great guy, I get it, but a TERRIBLE PROF. He is constantly behind in lectures, giving back papers and exams and his DUMB TA WAS A HARD MARKER. Overall though, hilarious lectures and he's really knowledgeable but goes on so many tangents that it's hard to understand what the heck he's teaching
In a 90 minute lecture, Professor Crawford would teach relevant course material for maybe 10 minutes and go on irrelevant tangents for the other 80. If you have a question about anything, dont expect to meet with him. He never responded to a single one of my several emails over the term. Save yourself the headache and stay away from this class.
Very knowledgable on the subjects and and has a way of tying the course material together well. Super funny and nice guy as well, would definitely take another class by him.
Quite possible the greatest professor I've ever had (and dare I say in the entirety of UBC). The man can somehow identify nearly every quote from each reading we have on the spot, actually cares about giving advice to students, and is absolutely hilarious. 10/10, long live crawfdoggie
Professor Crawford is the most knowledgable prof i have had at UBC. He has an incredible amount of knowledge and contextual pieces that make his discussion heavy seminars interesting. He's also funny and casual. That being said, if you like having papers graded on time, he is not the prof for you. I never received half of my papers from the year.
The marking was super harsh, there are only three things you're graded by (midterm, paper, final), and good luck ever getting a reply by email. The only positive about this class is that he can be funny in lectures.
Very intelligent and understanding professor with loads of experience. I definitely recommend taking his classes.
Crawford is a great guy with funny lectures, but most lectures are disorganized and hard to know what is testable. There are no clear grading rubrics or instructions for the papers. Only marked on three things (final - 40, 2 papers - 40/20). It takes forever to get marks back. He is nice/caring by allowing extensions easily but not a great prof.
I had him last year and he is truly such an amazing professor, so patient and hilarious. however, you wont get papers back on time and he tends to skim on feedback. also super lenient with due dates.
An engaging professor who keeps lectures interesting, though the grading can be quite harsh. Definitely attend classes and prepare thoroughly using resources like Unstuck study to succeed in this course.
He is such a great prof! He is funny, hilarious and he really tries to connect with his students. He may not be tech savvy but he is such a delight and very passionate about the topic. We had one mini essay, one big essay and a final but don't let that deter you from taking Crawford. He is a gem at UBC
Professor Crawford is funny, knowledgeable, and passionate about the material, and I appreciate that he doesn't just read off the slides. Grades do take a long time to come back, but it is a huge class. Grades rely on just two essays and a final, which can be quite nerve-racking. Overall, I would recommend his class. Attend every lecture!!
