Really energetic, cares about his students. A joke every morning. Take him if you want to enjoy physics.
He's a BAD teacher...putting it plainly. He has a great attitude, but if grades are you main priority, take someone else. He can be funny sometimes, but he's anal other times.
good teacher, likes his electrical stuff. i didnt put much effort in so i got carried by the t-score. put the effort in and im sure youll get an A
this professor is energenic and fun, however,if you sleep in the class he will wake you up or he will throw something to you. exams are really hard but if you study, it will be okay. good teaching, hard test, every week homework, and dont miss the class
Very energetic. Loves his corny jokes. Lectures are easy, checkpoints almost every week to boost grade. All conceptual tests. Hard homework, but will give a partial completion grade.
He's really enthusiastic about what he teaches and he loves coming to teach. his attitude will rub off on you. His tests are fair, some questions come straight from notes. I used to suck at physics, but now its one of my favorite classes
very energetic teacher who will make you laugh in class. Tests are more on the hard side, and require a lot of studying. He answers every single email you send him, something not done by too many teachers.
I dunno. I never read the book and attended class regularly. I thought the class was pretty easy and survived with a B. I never really fretted anything. Final was just previous exam questions. Not taking again for PHY 2 because he thinks he may eliminate T-curve.
Dr. Criss is a very hard and unfair professor. Tests are not curved and very difficult our class average was a 60 and he didn't care. Homework comes from another universities website and is very hard you can end up with negative points. This professor really doesn't care about his students. If you have a choice take physics with someone else.
Great teacher. Actually teaches. Sometimes counts attendance. Assigns online hw but is easy with grading. Exams are made of problems from hw or class examples. Does NOT curve exam grades but will replace lowest grade with final exam grade.
He makes the class passable, but you gotta work for it. Dropped Jiangs class then took his, found it alot better. He's pretty informative.
He seems like a great teacher but once you get into the semester you learn otherwise. He tells you not to use the book then gets hw and review questions from it. He tells you he is always available yet when you go and see him he tells you to see a tutor or that he already went over it. His "funny" jokes get old REAL fast. He is BAD! Don't take him!
Gives off a great 1st impression. After the 1st class his true colors show. He is rude & obnoxious. Loves to call out his students. He uses a T-score which is helpful. I got a 55% (I studied) on my exams and got a B- in the class. Do the mandatory HW. His review class is not helpful. His office hours are NOT warm and welcoming. Gets annoyed easily.
Use the book. He says not to, but a lot of the test questions are from the book. Obviously you are going to learn Physics from a physics book! Woods is easier because he allows students to have a note sheet on the exam. BUT his averages are nearly the same to Criss. So he can't be that easier. The course is T-scored so the avgs are important.
horrible teacher, I was a freshman and thought physics 1 was the hardest class ever. Scared the hell out of me, almost changed my major but I am a junior right now in ENG no thanks to him, his HW is hard as hell, no one gets a 100 on it, tests are hard as hell, and you have to read the book contrary to what he says otherwise u will get a low grade
he's a good teacher, but isn't direct about what the exams will be like. the online homework he uses SUCKS really bad. if you can get through that HW you will definitely do ok on the tests. 3 exams, 1 final. i got an 89 on the first test, 40 on the second and somewhere in the 90s on the third and still got an a in the class thanks to the bell curve
Cool teacher. Homework is helpful to the tests, but not easy. The class is graded based on test grades, and the tests are graded relative to the class average.
Hard teacher. He is interesting, but he is hard. Homework system sucks and is hard to do. You'll do good if you think the homework is easy. Plus...his notes aren't that clear...so either attend his lectures or use the book A LOT
This guy loves to teach! He's a little quirky/corny, but really nice. He understands the learning process better than any other professor I've ever had. HIGHLY recommended if you're interested in learning physics. I wouldn't call his class an easy A, but not too difficult either.
His teaching style is very energetic, which helps to keep students awake. But almost anyone who goes to his office hours says he's obnoxious/unhelpful. Don't buy the book before the first day... he doesn't teach from it. It helps to have some edition of the Serway book, so I got a used previous edition online (saved $190). "Form a study group."
I hated every minute of this class and barely passes. I wasn't too fond of the professor.. at all. However, I do believe he is one of the preferred teachers for this subject. Work and study hard!
run for your life!!! this guy gives tough homework which is graded, is rude when u ask him questions, picks on ppl during class and does not allow for any extra credit if u miss something. he is tough terrible and not worth it. do urself a favour and pick another teacher. most of the class got b's c's and failures
Professor Criss is truly a great teacher. He completely understands the learning process and does everything in his power to help you succeed; although his class is NOT an easy A. He assigns tough homework, but hw problems and exams come mainly from lecture notes. Study hard and go to office hours and an A is not hard.
Dr. Criss is the best! Hes exremely helpful IF he recognizes you so go to the class. He doesnt teach from the book-has his own methods, I had him for PhysicsI too and I have still never touched the book. Tests are pretty hard but he makes them that way because of the Tscore. The homework stinks but really prepares you for tests. Highly recommended!
Criss really likes to teach and it shows. I had him for physics 1 and 2 (with calc). He does lots of demos in class/videos and isn't just about notes. The homework system changed so it isn't graded as hard as before. Don't buy the book, you won't need it! Sit toward the front and ask questions (he likes that). Great class!
This guy is kind of weird. I'm sure he's a great physics teacher, but he was a horrible Energy & Humanity teacher. He should have never have taught the class because he pretty much had no idea about the subject. The class was so uninspiring. It should have been taught by an environmental science professor.
Dr. Criss, he lives by the t-score and dies by the t-score and expects everyone to do the same! He is very unaccommodating and gives everyone the same advice no matter their weakness in studying, "TAKE A MASTER SET OF CLASS NOTES!" He is entertaining in class, which is just about the only thing he is good for! I wouldn't recommend him!
Dr. Criss is the man. His classes are never boring due to his engaging teaching style. He loves physics and will do his best to make sure you walk out of class loving it as well. My experiences with him are all positive, he is extremely helpful. His exams aren't the easiest, but if you study, you will do well.
He is alright at teaching, but gives the worst homework. Tutors who have went through physics 1 and 2 have trouble with the hw he gives. The hw he gives for physics 1 is extremely difficult for the amount we learn in class. The tests are ez, but the hw is very hard. I would recommend getting a different teacher.
There were many mornings where I couldn't stand him, but he taught the subject well. He managed to get the class engaged in learning most days and he has a WONDERFUL habit of dropping the exact wording for test questions in class. Don't miss class and there is no reason not to earn an A. Well, for energy and humanity that is.
Excellent teacher, esp. considering 150+ stud. and an auditorium. He keeps most students engaged. Homework is challenging; if it were too easy, & you got all the answers right the first time without referencing class notes or text, how would you know what you didn't know? How would you know you had mastered the material?
Awesome teacher. Probably the best physics teacher I've ever had. he really explains the concepts well, and makes class enjoyable. homework is sometimes challenging, but that's physics.
Great teacher. He challenges you, makes you think and can be quite hard. Still one of the best teachers ive had in this school.
Professor Criss is a very nice man and will never deny anyone help. still, his examples in class were quite simple when the homework requires a complex understanding of the concepts. physics is not easy eitherway.
Dr. Criss is a great professor. He makes the class interesting by showing youtube clips of the concepts we're learning. He explains the topics thoroughly by covering conceptual questions and calculation questions. Tests are hard, but the goal is to try as many right as you can and not necessarily all of them. Definitely recommend him.
Good guy, funny, keeps the class reasonably entertained. He does have a weird approach to problem solving. It's not a bad thing, but it's more theoretical than I'm used to. (he majored in Physics, my previous instructors were engineers.)Overall, good guy. Take him.
Dr. Criss is very funny. He likes to show cartoons at the beginning of class. His examples are always easy, while the homework is not. The exams are very difficult but are based on a T-score.
Criss is a good lecturer with his eye on teaching as opposed to research. He talks a good game but individual attention can suffer due to class size. He also tended to have some favorites in class. When asked to go over some questions in more detail he would ask one of these favorites if they understood and then decline to explain if they said yes.
Dr. Criss does not require the textbook; he encourages students to build a professional library with texts of their choosing. The material is fairly simple with the right perspective. "Randy" is very enthusiastic, entertaining, and caring. He could use more demos and analogies, but as-is, he is one of USF's better professors!
He is an okay professor. I am going to take him for second semester physics so he must have done something right. He does curve on a deviation scale and there are online homework every week. The discussion board and chat board helped the most. He will try to help you understand the material. He will answer questions after class.
Dr. Criss is the best professor I have ever had at USF. He is clear and easy to understand, and he tries his best to make students interested and engaged in learning. Take him, you will not only learn, but you will understand physics.
Great physics professor. Took him for physics 1 & 2. I would suggest him. Online homework due at the end of every week and 3 test with a final exam. Does a good job explaining notes. He doesn't usually solve problems the way the book does but his way is easier and makes more sense.
Dr Criss is a great teacher! He believes in teaching you the concepts and his exams are 50% 'conceptual' no computing required! He teaches you the ideas and assigns homework that will work you hard and force you to learn anything you did not entirely get in class,if you dont go to class you may miss some of the concept questions and do your own hw!
I wish USF had more professors like him who actually care and want you to learn. Easy homework, very easy tests, and he will explain anything you don't understand as much as he can, whether it's during office hours or after class.
Great teacher. HW is hard but he will help with them. Tests are easy but tricky. A little bit of studying and you should receive an A on all his exams
Tests are crazy hard, but T-scored so it works out! homework is tough too, but if you go to class and understand the homework you will be fine. Its an interesting class!
Loved his class! He's very energetic and personable. He makes everything very easy to understand and only teaches things that you need to know and doesn't confuse you with any extra stuff. Definitely taking him for Physics 2 next semester!
Hard to get a A. He thinks students who take his class, study only his class. Final is 3 chapter and then plus with the all old material. That is sick for student because they dont have enough time to take care for another subject. If you care about the grade, the good choice does not take him.
excellent teacher. incorporates textbook rarely but lectures are exciting and personable. highly recommended.
At first he seems like a good teacher; however, after a couple of classes he gets terrible! He is not a good teacher at all. Doesn´t really explain things, justs works examples which makes it hard to comprehend the material. Also its hard to study bc he doesnt teach according to the book. He has a good attitude but gets hostile and rude at times
He's a great professor and now I actually understand physics! Doesn't use the book. For exams just study by using the conceptual and objective questions and you will pass. Only problem is that it is T-Scored, so most people get B's. However, your grade is always higher than it would've been. Take him if you will go to class and do all the homework!
Criss is a decent professor. He's passionate about the subject and cares about his students. The way he teaches is a little hard. He isn't the best at explaining things and only teaches the hard way, so there's not point in attending. But the physics department has enough resources so you can still learn. With HW and T-score it's easy to pass.
Criss is a very knowledgeable teacher. I really think he does the best with the information to make it easy for us as students. You don't need the book. He responds to emails quickly and is very helpful. The material can be difficult. Go to class, not for the written material, but for the concepts and test information.
He is a great professor. I have no complaints about him, but the textbook is a whole lot of frustration and time spent scratching my head to no avail. Despite not having a useful text book, I was able to learn the material and get an A by attending his lectures. P.S. - There is hardly any calculus needed.
I get straight A's every semester, this is the first A- I have every received. I studied my a$$ off in this class and I paid a tutor. I know physics a lot more because of it- My knowledge about physics has NOTHING to do with Dr. Criss. He is a terrible teacher. He is a nice guy and very intelligent- AWFUL teacher. DO NOT take him!
He's a nice guy and nice teacher. His exams weren't easy but were fair in my opinions. Attempts to keep class interesting and gets you to pay attention. Responds to emails quick and willing to help you out if you don't understand something. Take him, he goes nice and slow and won't move on if you don't get it.
I like Criss but the criticisms in previous comments are somewhat warranted. I would say take him if you are someone who learns by doing. He solves problems all day long and if that is how you learn it will work for you. Take him if you need to understand the physical concepts at a theoretical level, physics majors and engineers looking for a phd.
Dr. Criss is a very intelligent man and is extremely knowledgable in the Field of Physics; HOWEVER, he is an awful teacher/instructor. You can take him if you like obviously, but he is really a terrible professor. He is very unapproachable and he expects the students to know Calculus 3 and Differential Equations upon entering the class.
Terrible, just Terrible. Have fun for those who are forced to take this P.O.S.
AWFUL!!!!! RUN!!!!
He is a VERY smart &good professor. He wants the best for each student but to be an engineer you will not be spoon fed in this class. I've had him for both Physics I (B+) and II (B). If you want to know the material, take him and study your heart off. If you want the easy way out take Zhou. There is no curve except for in the hw. I'd take him again.
Loved him, so nice! He barely uses the book with the exception of extra practice problems (do those if you want to fully grasp the material and practice for the exam) he doesn't test on the material from the book, and you must attend lecture to fully grasp concepts (he tests on those!). I would take him again I actually don't hate physics bc of him
I took Energy and Humanity with Dr. Criss at USF in the fall of 2013. It's half online and half in person. You must go to his lectures (which only last an hour barely) to complete quizzes. He is an awesome, easy professor. Allows you to use your own notes on his quizzes that you hand write from material he provides online. You do not use the book.
This guy really knows how to teach. He's enthusiastic and repeats so everything is drilled into your head. You still have to study ALOT, but the guy is probably the nicest physics teachers you'll ever meet.
I was very disappointed with this professor. He is so intelligent and enthusiastic about physics yet he is extremely hard to understand. His teaching style is just all over the place and his tests are so hard that there is always a giant curve. I left the class feeling as if I never learned anything which was disappointing since I enjoy physics.
If you expect that he will help you, you are wrong. I pass because I study a lot for my final. Homework mandatory and only 10%. Be prepare to spent your weekend doing homework. 3 horrible test a lot confusing conceptual questions 20% each. Final around 40 question 30%. If you have the opportunity to take this class with another teacher please do it
Dr. Criss is the best professor I've ever had. He knows what he's talking about, he speaks VERY clearly and teaches very well, teaching in a manner that is understandable due to the fact that he had trouble in college with his professor's limited teaching abilities. If you have a problem with Criss, then you probably are skipping class.
Dr. Criss is a really great and enthusiastic, university level professor. YOU WILL HAVE TO APPLY YOURSELF AND DO HOMEWORK, but if you're taking this class then you should know that already. He teaches process not formulas which is very diffferent from high school physics but I enjoyed that. I will not take physics 2 without him!
By far one of my favorite professors at USF! Corny jokes, exciting, explains material well. He is awesome. I love going to this class because of how fun he is. He simplifies the equations and makes it easy. Had to retake after last semester with another prof and he has taught everything a million times better. TAKE HIM!
Criss forces you to solve problems his way. If you miss class you are screwed because the books method will not help you on his tests. He tries to trick students on exams. His reasoning behind that is "Oh well its t-scored." Instead of teaching physics he assigns irrelevant homework assignments that he even admits won't be on the test.
Dr.Criss is probably the most enthusiastic professor i've ever had. He is so passionate and knowledgeable about physics, that it shows through his lectures and makes the class enjoyable. Tough class, but he is very good at explaining the concepts in a easy to understand way. Hands down the best professor to take for this class.
The class was hard. No matter which professor you take it with, it's hard. But he tries his best to explain it. He's not monotone so lectures aren't (as) boring.
He does his own thing meaning he shows you his own equations and does not want you to use the book. The tutors and the the TA follow the books method, so you are learning 2 different methods. Hard hw and easy tests. If you got problems like i had, he will refuse to help. And he does not do reviews. I dropped out of the lecture.
To start with, I took this class online. Quizzes are based on readings and homework is more about applying what was read, you can use book for both if needed. Although I did not have much contact with Mr. Criss, he seemed like he would be a very nice teacher in person. Overall, easy class as long as you read and understand the concepts.
There are 15 modules in the class, and you have to do homework and a quiz for each module. You basically have to read the book in order to get a good grade on the class. He doesn't give out notes or anything, so you basically have to do everything yourself. Some of the questions are somewhat difficult, but overall this class okay.
I was hoping to learn a lot! His teaching method needs work. And he makes it where you rely on classmates if you don't get the material. Thumbs down!!!!! I read the book, I attended every class, and took every note I possibly can plus did homework. I wish he taught the concept and instead of making corny jokes. TEACH IF I PAID FOR IT!!!!!
Here's what i wish i knew before i took the class: The homework is much harder than the actual exam and in some ways totally different. It's helpful to read the book but he does not teach similarly to the book so it can be VERY confusing. Try to find someone with old exams so you can see how he writes his test questions.
Dr. Criss is a very dynamic speaker! The major issue with his class is that he teaches concepts in class, but he does not do problems. If you want to pass this class, do all of the problems that he recommends. If you have time, spend time learning how to do the masterphysics questions (but those are much harder than exams). Highly recommend him! :)
Dr. Criss reminds me of an evangelical recruiter. He reels you in with promises and lets you down. No matter how hard you try, he will do his best to make sure you don't receive an A. He says himself: 'I aim for the class average to be 50%-66%' and then he curves exams 5-10 points. Seriously?
Dr. Criss is the bomb compared to anybody else in the physics department! He always helps if you ask. His classes are easy if you sit up towards the front and pay attention, unfortunately it appears as though the simple majority of students don't even come to the lecture. Oh well, easier curve for me!
Dr. Criss rocks!! Just a warning that he'll teach differently from the textbook, but he does show us how to do various problem. HW is more difficult compared to the exams. All exams are based on a t-score curve, so you'll be able to get a good grade on the exams if you do well initially. Would take him again for Physics II
Great lecturer, gives cool demonstrations and is clearly excited about physics. The online HW is really hard, harder than tests and the tests aren't easy so you definitely have to work for a good grade.
Dr. Criss does have hard exams, but he has 5-6 office hours per week, answers all your questions, and is explicit in class about what is and is not on the exam. Homework is intentionally harder than exam. Dr. Criss comes into class excited to present material and talks about concepts instead of formulas. Would gladly take physics 1 and 2 again.
Tests are very hard but they are curved on a t-score. Does very easy problems in class, but the homework is VERY difficult which is very misleading of him... (yahoo answers saved my homework score). Even some of my physics 2 friends could not figure it out. He keeps class entertaining with his "dad" humor, if you know what I mean
Dr. Criss is the man! He cares so much for his students. He is very down to earth. If you ever have problems with the homework, he's not too big to sit down and set you up on tricky problems. I ended with a B+ in the class, but I feel that I understand physics so much better and have a strong foundation for further study.
I took him for PHY2048 and PHY2049. He taught physics the way it should be, not just through memorizing formulas. His tests were difficult and the homework took a while to complete, but the tests are curved. It's not too difficult to get a B.
What a lot of people seem to bash Criss about on here is simply the structure of the class itself, which Criss has little control over. All Physics 2 courses have the T-score system, all have a cumulative final (if Fall or Spring), and all have mandatory 10% homework. The tests are hard, study. The guy explains material thoroughly and is passionate
Pretty good at teaching the concepts, but goes into a lot of information that we don't need. He gives you the history, derivations, and other info that won't be on the exams, and thus falls behind schedule. We're behind about 3 weeks and half of the final exam's material won't be covered in class. 2 homework assignments per week are easy.
Criss seems like he would be an interesting person to sit and pay attention to as he lectures, but he isn't. I found him extremely boring and even annoying at times. He gives minimal homework every week which is short and simple. He gives 3 multiple choice tests and a cumulative final exam, and grades them based on a t-score and standard deviation.
Honestly one of the greatest professors I have ever taken. In his lectures, he will explain things in the easiest way he can, plus he repeats himself constantly, just to make sure we get the main points. He doesn't use powerpoints, he teaches straight from the heart. But he gives tough problems so be prepared to work.
He is funny but at the same time he can be mean. I personally do not like him. In class physics seems to be pretty straight forward but tests are tough. He doesnt teach from the book so you dont really know whats going on if you dont go to class. You need to study a lot by your own to understand. AVOID HIM
This class material can be very confusing, I know I have always struggled in physics. But Criss teaches in a way anyone can understand, he is very good at teaching physics. Test are curved based on a T-score. So if you do average you'll basically get a B depending on the class and test. Homework is only a few problems a week.
Easily the best Physics professor on campus. His lectures keep you engaged and he is very knowledgeable. His approach is different from the textbook, but having the textbook helps. Homework every week, some extra credit opportunities, and 3 tests and a final. Tests curved on t-score. Not the easiest material but he definitely makes it easier.
Do NOT take him if you don't have a strong physics background. After reading reviews here I decided to take him but his exams are extremely confusing and don't expect to immediately understand material in class. Experiments and Demonstrations in class were cool but thats about it.
Are the tests hard? Yes. Is the material hard? Yes. But you aren't going to find a better Physics teacher at USF so you better suck it up. Some people grasp the concepts better than others so if you aren't one of them, start studying ASAP. Not a lot of homework so give yourself plenty of time to study before the tests - they aren't easy.
The tests at first are hard, but when you see the solutions he posts after it's very basic. I suggest doing the practice problems from mastering because it is very similar to the actual exam and attend class!
Took Dr. Criss for 2049. He makes it very clear how he will teach the class, which is based on the material he covers in class and not on everything in the book. The test were fair, there are 3 and a final and all are t-score If you went to classes, do the one masteringphysics assignment per week and the additional problems posted it will go well.
Dr. Criss responds to emails quickly with clear, concise responses. I enjoyed his class and will take him again if given the option. Although, I took his online class, I selected "mandatory" for attendance because if you don't participate in the discussions within the allocated time, you receive no credit for them.
I've only ever received A's and B's and this class to me is the hardest class I've ever taken. This professor teaches in his own way and if you don't learn it his way you will not be able to pass. He makes the exams his way and if you did not learn it his way you won't pass.
Professor Criss is very passionate about this subject, however he teaches it in a way that makes understanding the material next to impossible. Additionally, the MasteringPhysics HW problems are a piece of cake compared to the exam and studying the extra practice problems is an absolute waste of time.
Because of this professor I may need to change my major, He DOES NOT give ANY study guides or sample exams so that we atleast have an idea how the test looks like and that we can test ourselves, tests are nothing like the homework. I cant even understand what he explains in class. Ive never had a grade lower than an A before taking Criss.
I get physics is hard. you need to study hard and often to understand the concepts, attend class, and hit up tutoring often, but seriously his tests are ridiculous. He really needs to start giving a proper review or start basing his tests to be at least somewhat similar to the practice problems/HW. Still your best prof. at USF for PHY 2048, sadly.
Fxck this teacher! He is cool and explains very good. I always understand in class and HW is fairly easy to do but the test are NOTHING like the problems that we do in class nor like the 104 problems that he usually posts for practice before a test. its BS! doing good in the HW wont help you at all in tests. I seriously hope he reads this..
His tests are a lot of problem solving.. If you prefer conceptual tests and 30% homework as opposed to 10% homework I would recommend taking Mcormick.
Physics is a hard subject in general, but Dr. Criss does his best to help his students understand the material. You can really tell how passionate he is about the subject; he gets super excited during lectures, which made me more excited about physics. He tells you exactly what to expect on the test. I wish I could take more classes with him!
DO NOT take. Homework is easy, he makes lectures fun, he is a very kind and passionate individual, BUT his tests are a piece of work. They are NOTHING like the practice problems he posted nor the homework he assigns. I get that you have to make exams a little different than homework, but don't tell us what they exam will be like and blindside us.
Dr. Criss's teaching style can be a bit confusing and his notes are unorganized and difficult to go back and study and understand. His lectures are very interesting though and the class demonstrations are cool, but tests are seriously hard. Luckily, the curve is always very generous. There is not much homework and he does offer extra credit.
Pros: Lots of extra credit for homework, tests graded on a curve, class demonstrations are amazing. Cons: His lectures: unorganized. Goes way too fast and taking notes is a pain, you multitask to take notes while trying to understand. Process to solve Physics problems are confusing and hard to understand, even during 1on1 during office hours.
Dr. Criss is an energetic teacher and keeps things interesting. He goes fast in class but all of his notes are uploaded to Canvas. He simplifies physics with a more process-based approach to solving problems. Tests are hard but grades on a curve with lowest test worth less. He drops lowest 3 homework and offers some extra credit. Would take again.
I never really went to class and could have gotten a better grade than I did. He is a good professor that cares about the success of his students and is almost always accessible. Sometimes he makes things more confusing than they need to be and throws random problems that have not been covered in class on the test, but he does curve all the tests.
Criss is a great professor. I had to withdraw from physics once before and was ready to change majors. I got an A. He teaches physics for people who don't get physics and stresses problem solving over memorization. Text is just for homework. Tests are 100% based on the lectures. Expect tricky questions on the tests and learn concepts over math.
The exams are tough but as long as you attend class and you are actually engaged you should do fine. One or two homework questions after each class. Great lecturing style and always stops to make sure everyone is keeping up and to drop a joke or two.
Doctor Criss provided a great introduction to physics; as an individual who has never taken a physics course before, I found that his lectures were informative and accessible. That being said, if you miss a lecture, you have a lot of work to catch up on. He creates tests directly on his lecture material, so best stay attention.
I took Dr. Criss for Physics I and will be taking Physics II with him in the spring! I found him to be a great professor. He focuses on enforcing a "process based approach" to physics which can be confusing for some, but i found it helpful. His exams are tough & but each is curved with a t-score grading scale which helps a lot.
Spends too much time being a pompous hippie, teaching things we don't need, and things that won't be on the test. His tests are tough to do well on even with T-Score; he always tries to trick you with the test questions that are more to flatter himself. His scanned in notes do help however, and he speaks fluent English. Just know what you're doing.
The worst instructor I've ever had at USF. Wastes class time talking about himself or to be petty by calling people out for being on their phones. Basically started the semester telling students its okay to not attend class. He skips over concept and mathematical relationships. Intentionally made the final impossible and said we wouldn't finish it.
He is a funny teacher. Doesn't spend as much time on concepts as needed imo. Tests are tricky at times, but the T-curve often helps. Drops half of the homework. Makes lowest test 10% of final grade. Teaches things a bit differently with a more thought and process based approach rather than just plug and chug approaches. Not easy but passable.
He treats this class as Q&A sessions. Students send him problems in-class or via email for him to work in class. Often helpful with explaining things and tackling problems. He posts things covered on Canvas. Attendance is the only factor in your grade. You can miss 2 classes max and still get an A. Recommended if you want to pass PHY 2049.
Not for everyone, but he knows his stuff. Moves at a rapid pace, so it's easy to get behind in the material. Attending lectures is paramount for the exams. Tests lean heavily on the concepts discussed in class and very little on the homework. Hard to get an A, but an easy B if you do the work. Don't mess around in class, he hates it.
This class was the hardest that I have taken to date. Professor Criss was very nice and helpful outside of class, but his lectures went very fast, and it was hard to keep up. The exams were extremely difficult, and the class average always low (minus curve). I would only recommend taking this professor if you are already comfortable with physics.
He teaches at a fast pace but mainly because there's just a lot of material to cover. Almost your entire grade is based off of exam performance but there's a generous curve (lowest you can get is a 50%). Exams aren't based off of the homework, but he tells you what you need to know for them IN CLASS. He's a great guy and just wants you to do well.
I took physics in high school and can tell you, I did not learn ANYTHING in this college course. He disrespects students and teaches new content through one long example. He will tell you things won't be on the exam and they are. A lot of questions on the exam end up being material that wasn't discussed in class. Book not required, I would though..
If you put in the work in his class, it's most likely that you will get a good grade. He has some pretty hard exams, but I think if you do the homework and practice problems you will be good to go most of the time. Biggest problem is he cuts some details around the last few lessons. tldr; good at teaching but has some pretty hard exams.
I'm an Engineer, and this class was THE HARDEST I've ever had. WORSE THAN CHEM FOR ENGINEERS! I'm great with the concepts, math, arithmetic, BUT when it comes to his exams, HE ADDS THINGS NEVER MENTIONED! I'm great with the HW, Chegg, Clutch, getting 100's on the problems, but his tests are a no-go. Save yourself and take it at a community college!
He's a bad teacher. His lectures are confusing and all over the place but the worst thing about his class are the exams. You're not going to learn much in class. Prepare for much learning outside of the class. And then you get a hard exam. I highly recommend McCormick. His tests are much easier and he gives practice exams that help prepare you.
Awful teaching method, full of himself. Only take this class if Physics comes naturally to you. If you are NOT a procastinator, you will become one. He posts up to 70+ Extra Practice problems and they're the only way you can study cuz he does things different than the book, and you'll worry about them NONSTOP. Don't buy the book. 5% HW, 95% tests
Terrible teacher. He thinks he is the best teacher at the school though. Does not care about his students at all. Majority of his class always fails exams. Terrible person and professor.
Tests are half on what he lectures, half on whatever he thinks you might have heard in the 10 minutes he teaches you before going on another tangent of unrelated formula derivations. Lectures are rambling messes, tests are tough simply because he doesn't teach what he puts on them.
Good teacher. You dont need to go to lectures If you know what you doing. If you really good in physics, dont buy the homeworks only %5 percent. Youll not able to do it, its a lot.
I took this course online with him. Wasnt bad, but it was online, so I never had him actually teach me. I recommend the online class. Only 1 homework and 1 quiz due per week. Take some time, but not horrible. Quizzes are timed, but homeworks are not. Tbh quizzes are easier than homework. Dont do the work, you dont pass. But its really not bad
I took his summer physics class. I would say that as long as you sit up front and actually attend the lectures and are engaged in the material the class is really engaging and useful. His process for teaching physics I found a lot more effective than a previous physics class that I took.
Unless you have a very strong background in physics, I would not recommend taking Criss. He has a process-based, physical approach to his lectures; however, this style is not for everyone. His exams are very difficult and are 95% of your grade. You need to master each process to pass this class.
Dr. Criss is a good guy and he tries his best to help students understand, but this class is not easy. 95% of the grade is tests; the lowest test counts for less percentage than the higher 2. The tests were similar to the practice tests, but still very difficult. Uses a t-score for exams and offers up to 2% extra credit.
People on here claiming that his "tests are impossible" clearly don't make an effort. They are essentially a copy paste of the practice exams. Dr. Criss is an absolutely fantastic lecturer, and even as someone who hates physics, I LOVED his class!
I am an engineer, I love physics and math! But after I took this class, I thought I was wrong. I just want to be a lawyer now, and even I think the legal profession is much simpler than this class!
By far one of the best professors I've had. All of the test are curved so if you do better than the majority of the class you'll end up with an A or B. Tests aren't too hard if you study for them.
Great professor. I loved the lectures. A lot of exam questions are out of the practice exam. Every exam grade is curved.
He has his own way of solving problems that no one else understands and can help you with. He made me hate physics when I need it for my major. I would really want him to rethink his teaching methods and grading policy because you can easily fail even with the curve!
Doesnt answer questions if he has already answered them or if he mentioned it in the syllabus or online. Has a unique way of doing things so if youve ever taken Phyics 1 before this will be a different take on it and very very confusing if you already had an understanding before. His thought process is separating and convoluted. Do not recommend.
worst teacher I ever had in my life, his exams have no relation with the lectures and homework problems and the homework has 10% value, and he also does a lot of unnecessary activities like learning catalytics which has no value like the attendance but is required. don't take this guy. and he gives no extra credit and half the class drops it before
Funny guy and explains physics as it should be explained, as a process rather than searching for a formula to solve your problem. He has big curves on his exams and the lowest of the 3 normal exam grades count only as 10% of your grade, and the other 2 normal exams as 25%.
If you can avoid taking Criss try your best. He is a very kind, caring guy however he does not teach well. He is akin to an old retired dad who decided to teach physics. Test are worth 90% of your grade. They are extremely difficult and he does not give practice problems. The homework is a very different format.
If you don't attend call you will not pass, he explains a lot verbally and doesn't write good notes to follow. He uses a method to answer problems but doesn't explain his process well enough to follow. I struggled very much in this course that i'll have to take it again with a different and better professor
Dr. Criss gives good lectures, although pretty fast. He expects the homework to teach the material, making it difficult to complete, even though it's assigned weekly. Uses Learning Catalytics to track attendance and participation so don't plan on missing any class.
He never finished examples or any questions during reviews. He assumed everyone understood. He uses Learning Catalytics. His tests changed from FRQ and MC to only MC, so it depends when you have him what you will get. He explained things confusingly, as if it was obvious. Very passionate about physics and loves showing shorts physics videos.
Im a biology major so Im awful at physics no matter what professor I have. I love Dr. Criss for many reasons, though. Physics is not easy, especially to try to teach in only a semester. He considers how well students understand concepts, is helpful answering questions in the canvas discussion forum, and his tests are fair if you study correctly.
Homework and exams are the only grades put into the grade book. The homework is graded on how correct it is via masteringphysics and the exams are at most 16 multiple choice questions each. If you are a life science major and not an engineering major GOOD LUCK.
Extremely hard class and difficult professor. I would only recommend this professor if you already have a GREAT grasp of physics. Tests are extremely difficult.
He uploads notes done in class but explains things verbally & specifically doesnt detail his notes just so you'll have to attend class. Attendance is a small grade, 13-18 HW problems a week which are difficult & take time. 10% homework, 10% lowest exam, 50% two exams, & 30% final exam. Tests are EXTREMELY hard!!! No reviews/ practice problems :(
Nice guy but not a great professor. His tests are difficult to begin with, but they are made worse by his trick questions. At least a quarter of the questions are hinging on if you picked up on a single word and it is not obvious what that will be. No extra credit given, but sometimes a curve. The lowest exam grade he will give is 50% no plus/minus
His tests are very difficult. Homework, lectures, and exams don't really correlate. He's a really cool dude and his lectures make sense and are interesting to listen to and follow. Even though the lectures are good they may or may not help you for homework/exams.
He's a nice guy and he does generally curve each test. You will definitely need to do all of your homework to properly understand the concepts of what will be on the test, because the problems will not look like the homework. Does not do + or -, I guess I can be a positive or a negative for you.
He is a really good professor; clearly explains his methods of teaching and the reason for doing it. He tries to make the lectures interesting and takes his time to see if we understand. He also posts class notes as a visual aid. If you take the time to know how to do the homework, exams won't be hard. I recommend taking the problem solving class.
I recommend taking this problem solving class with the lecture. It certainly helps to understand the material and homework better. We are assigned to a different 3 person group each week to work problems together. He and a TA will help and answer questions. He often assigns problems that are similar to the exam and homework problems. 1 credit class
Best teacher I ever had in term of lecturing. However, test is HARD. To do well in the test, you have to understand every aspect of the homework. It's risky if you are the person who want to preserve your 4.0 GPA, but otherwise, awesome experience
Criss has horrible lectures. He is all over the place and does not explain himself in depth. He brushes the topic on the surface and then expects us to do complicated problems. His tests were short so it was detrimental to miss one questions. Be prepared to teach yourself because you will not pass if you rely only on him. The homework wasn't bad.
He genuinely cares about physics and student success. He gives clear feedback and is always willing to help if you ask him in person (or during these times through canvas). His exams pre quarantine aren't too hard if you follow his "process" that he explains in lectures. This is not an easy A class at all but you will get a better understanding.
I took him for Physics 1 and 2. I had an extenuating life circumstance in physics 1 that kept me from taking the final exam until a month later. He worked with me, probably more than he should have, to help make sure I was able to finish the class. His exams are challenging, but he gives plenty of practice problems to prepare you for them.
Okay... If you were to work with Criss one-on-one and actually be able to be in class (not online), Great option for PHY2048, you'll work for it, but it pays when you go to statics. HOWEVER, NEVER under any circumstance take this professor unless you have a death with to you sanity for PHY2049. I can't stand this teacher, pick ANYone but Criss.
Doesn't teach, just post random youtube videos that arent his.
He tried his best during the pandemic to assist students, however, the material was presented poorly. The notes for each lesson were vague, so most of the learning came from the MasteringPhysics. He tries his best by hosting synchronous office hours each week to clear up confusion for students. The exams were challenging and unfair.
He's got everything beautifully laid out for us. He is very clear and extensive about assignments throughout the week.
If you're an auditory learner then this class is not for you. Dr. Criss doesn't actually teach this class. Everything you learn in this class is out a very poorly explained textbook.
Not a good online teacher. Tries to hold office hours for questions. Lecture videos are short and homeworks are complicated and long.
Terrible. He is one of those instructors that literally said, "I wish I had a professor like me when I was in school". You can do everything in your power and you will only understand "most" of the test (his words). Oh yeah and you will never have enough time to complete the tests (also his words). Exam 1, Midterm, Final, HW... only grades you get
Spring 2021 online 100%. Other reviews said that he was a great professor, which I don't disagree with. However, most of the lectures posted aren't even from him. It's videos he found online that pertain to the lecture, take what you want from that. When there are lectures made by him, he doesn't explain. Its 2-6 min videos. Prob better in person:(
Take Physics with anyone but Criss . This guy will ruin your life . He doesnt explain anything and expects you to do everything by yourself. The tests are way harder than expected. Lecture videos suck and dont help at all .
Absolutely terrible! He puts the bare minimum effort into his online class. Expects 3 hours of "class time" but only provides around 30 minutes of content tops (most of which is not his). You will essentially be teaching yourself entirely, and this class WILL be the majority of your schoolwork. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Do you wanna have your life? Do you wanna learn physics? Do you care how your professor treats you? If you answered yes to these questions, DO NOT TAKE Dr. Criss. He teaches nothing and it is funny that he thinks he is doing his job really well. By the way, I took his class asynchronous class in Spring 2021.
I took physics 1 fully online, and he relies heavily on mastering physics and external sources to teach the material. HIs lectures were short and confusing, and he didn't do much to help me understand the material. I'm sure he would be better in person, but for an online course, I ended up learning much of the material on my own.
Maybe it was because of the change in circumstances or because he had a problem with technology. Whatever the problem or challenges he may have faced I did my best to stay motivated through the 5-minute lectures he provided weekly. He gave up the most difficult questions he could think of, which kind of shows how smart he really is. USF Physics...
This class was awful in every way possible. Very little instruction is given by the professor. Few 3 minute lecture videos are provided weekly. The bulk of the work comes from Mastering Physics which is a disaster. 75% of grade is derived from Exams while the other 25% is HW and discussion with classmates. Be prepared to teach yourself everything.
Well organized course. The learning communities were helpful. Lectures were rarely useful. I couldn't listen to the lecture video and gain enough insight to do the homework. Of course, you need to read the textbook, but I taught everything myself. Even then, studying well and really understanding is insufficient for exams (raw score always
His lecture videos are 2-3 minutes long. Teaching style: learn it by yourself from mastering homework. Grade received is based on how well you do on the exams (Exam 1, Midterm, and Final Exam). His exams are not like the lecture videos or homework practiced. The exam average of the class is a C (with the curve)!!!
Do not take this professor if you want an A!! Rude to students in office hours when asked to explain questions. He thinks that his teaching style is the best and that extra credit is wrong. He complicates physics and does not provide any practice exams or reviews for the exams. His exams are not like the lectures or the homework (75% of grade)!!
He insulted us through his announcements, was really petty with how he responded to emails and inquiries, did not accept any criticism, literally told us we were going to not complete his tests and that we probably could not solve everything. Really frustrating and the exams were so heavy. I would rather repeat orgo I than this class again.
Love Dr. Criss! Took him online during covid and in person. So much better in person. Really funny and likes to have fun. Study his notes from the lectures and youll do fine. He makes it easy to learn physics and is almost always available outside of class. One of my favorite profs at USF- looking forward to the next class with him!
Dont take him online! Much better in person. Tests are from homework and lecture problems. Goes kinda fast but gets the job done. Funny guy!
Here's the problem. He is naively bad at teaching. Practice tests (he doesn't do) are important and they bring up scores across the board. He has tests that are closely related to his notes which is great. His homework, however, should give far more chances. He uses what's obviously a 'test your knowledge' program as a 'learn problem solving here.'
I took PHY 2048 with him online and it was terrible. There was no real lecture for his online class during Spring 2021. Luckily, PHY 2049 was in-person, and I feel like I'm not as bad at Physics as I thought. He's very funny in class, and he lets us ask a lot questions during his in-person sessions as well. Overall, I think he's a great professor.
No extra credit. Very unclear about everything. Thinks that he gives you everything you need when really the exam looks like something you have never seen, every time. Good luck with homework, it is practically impossible. Tests are 30-40 questions and your lucky if you even get three right. Because everyone will fail he uses T-Score grading.
Does not allow canvas to show your grade, so you're kind of wandering in the dark in regards to that unless you want to calculate it on your own. He says his lectures directly translate to the quizzes, but I'd have to disagree.
I have taken Dr Criss for a total of 3 classes, with the last 2 both being physics II lecture. His lectures are straight forward, but his test materials are quite different than lectures and his tests are written as if they are riddles in an indiana jones treasure cave. Truthfully, i did better when i relied on the text instead of his lectures.
Criss is a good teacher. I hear a lot of opinions about his class and still decided to take it. He is a good teacher. Tests are hard.
Its physics. Its hard. No doubting that. But once you get past that, you see how great of a professor Criss is. He truly does care about his students, and although he may not be able to get every concept across, he is truly spending his life trying to. In lectures, he takes breaks for questions and writes emojis into his notes. Heavy dad joke vibes
He gave really tough homework and exams. What I did before exams is that I went through all his lecture notes, the hw, and the study area on Mastering. Those resources are super helpful. He curves all exams and quizzes. Overall, he's a great lecturer. I like his style and his humor.
Criss been saying that he hate puzzle. But his exam is like a puzzle moreover some of the stuff that on the exam is not even in his notes.
His lectures are awful, he does everything on his own sheet of paper in class, writing with seemingly very shallow preparation. Most of his scribbles are hard to decipher, even more so if you sit more to the back of the class. His grades are 90% test based, and he has a terrible grading system. No extra credit at all.
Dr. Criss does a really good job explaining some difficult concepts. He can be irritable sometimes, but will always answer questions anyway. Homework is 20% of the grade and the rest is the four exams. There is no extra credit. He curves every exam so that the class average is a C. Exams are all multiple choice and usually easier than the homework.
One of my favorite professors he makes physics easy to understand. however, I would not take him online I heard he is one of the worst online teachers.
Get ready for the worst professor you will ever meet he has a long homework every 2 days and homeworks are worth 20% his test are impossible to pass even if you study 10 days non stop during the exam he will make you feel like you're cheating even though you're not and will make you very stressed and he shouts at students during exams
It was the most stressful class I've taken. all your grade is based on 3 exams and a final. he curves the exams but they were so hard I couldn't get more than 50% on each. his lectures didn't help at all I was basically teaching myself and I used the touring all the time. he doesn't give extra credit or practice exams.
I don't understand why Dr. Criss has such low reviews, he's a great guy and definitely wants you to succeed However, you HAVE to put in the work if you want to do good Exams are LITERALLY homework questions He sends an announcement out before the exams that include a breakdown of what topics will be covered Homework is a big part of the final grade
He curves exams, and your final grade is an equation that will give you a lot of wiggle room. You need to study outside the classroom, and do all the homework on your own to really practice all the concepts. The practice quizzes in the textbook will help when it comes to the tests (especially when it comes to conceptual questions).
Professor Criss gives a nice overview of each topic but doesn't go in-depth into the concepts. His classes are enjoyable and easy. However he does not give enough information for you to do the hw so you'll have to definitely do outside research to be able to complete the hw. Criss's exams are hard. Exams don't look like nothing like hw.
Professor Criss knows a lot about physics and does his best to make everyone understand it. But, his classes are boring, you have assigned seats on exams (3 exams+1 final), no extra credit, and his exams have at least 2 impossible exercises. Positive points: he curves exam grades, and you can bring a cheat sheet and graphing calculators on exams.
He teaches students like they already know what he is saying. He is SO DISRESPECTFUL to students when taking exams. He gives no extra credit at all. The only good thing he does is that he curves exams.
He was a nice guy and his lectures weren't awful. The main problem is that your entire grade is three tests (75%) and homework (25%). The homework was also not reflective of the exam material at all.
The worst professor I have ever taken. If you do not understand his way of seeing physics, you will not be able to understand the material well. His tests are very hard and he has 0 extra credits. A disrespectful person who gets stressed by the slightest thing.
Criss gives hard exams. If you don't know the material on a deep, conceptual level you won't do great. It's frustrating because as an engineer you don't want to study hard for this class since it's one of your easier ones, but his exams force you to. It's much harder and goes more in depth than it should. He wants you to learn, but it's too much.
Prof. Criss doesn't have any plus minus grades, so you are either hit or miss with your GPA. His exams are insanely tough and are different from class and homework tasks. However, he curves a lot, because raw average for exams is always low. Consider Criss if you just want to pass class. If you want a good grade for GPA - prepare for a nightmare.
He definitely needs to restructure the grading of this course as a majority of it is just 3 exams (including the final). He is although very passionate about the subject which helps. His tests are always a wild card as there is not much to help prep you except how deeply you manage to understand the lectures.
He DOES NOT KNOW how to teach. He thinks everybody is a Physics major. The worst professor I've had!
He's passionate, but he hates questions asked and will call you out if they aren't up to par with his standards. The tests are challenging and tricky, but he does give a curve. His lectures don't correlate with his exams, and it's hard to pass his class when exams are over 80 percent of the course.
Criss is extremely passionate about physics however he has a very polarizing teaching style which may or may not result in studying from outside sources if you don't get it. His grading scale is ONLY 3 exams and homework, but he curves exams heavily. He is also extremely strict about exam policies and WILL kick you out if you don't follow them
He's extremely condescending and not approachable. He claims it's a "pen and paper" "in person" class, and yet gets angry when you don't use online videos to understand his lectures. Do not think about asking him a question. He told me to drop out when I asked him to explain something slowly. He knows Physics, but he forgets he's supposed to TEACH.
His lectures are nothing like the exams. The lecture and HWK are not as difficult as them. No extra credit whatsoever, graded by 4 exams and HWK.
When a class of ~200 consistently fails your exams that should be a clear indicator of how bad of a professor you are
Dr. Criss is very passionate about teaching, and will always answer questions and explain it fully until you understand. Lots of homework but small % of grade, other than that 3 tests. Missing lectures will hurt you, he moves very fast so ask question as soon as you have them. If you do the hw, pay attention and ask questions youll pass the tests.
exams are nothing like homework or lecture
ruined my 4.0 , tests nothing like the lecture stuff on homework. He thinks setting a class average to C is cool, but it just proves that he is a terrible teacher. Only curves save you
You either love or you hate Dr. Criss. If you are obsessed with a perfect GPA and getting straight A's, you will hate his class. If you only care about passing and are more interested in fun lectures, you will enjoy his class. Tests are all extremely hard, but all curved to average a C. It's damn hard to get an 'A', but it's much harder to fail.
His exams will give you nightmares. There is no way you can get an A in his class. If you want an A, avoid him. Only take him if you want to pass the class.
This professor is EXTREMELY TERRIBLE, no one should EVER take his class unless they are ready to fail. His lectures are way too complicated and he goes way too fast with topics. He just expects you to understand things the first time he explains and you get no real practice done. His Exams and HW are extremely difficult and don't follow lectures.
Going to class and doing the homework are a must. He had a lot of energy during his lectures and well organized notes. He teaches strictly from a physicist perspective and does'nt entertain questions about other methods during class. Sets clear expectations for tests but they're still difficult. The curves are generous but don't rely on it.
Criss is a good guy. You will only do good if you put the work in. This is not a class that you want to skip its lecture or start its hw the day its due. Hes a tough grader but, I think that just prepares ourselves for are future classes. Generous curves if you do bad. Got two D on the first exam and a B in the final and got a B in the class.
Tenure exists for professors like Dr. Criss. Very condescending in lectures. It seems like he shows up to most lectures unprepared and makes things up as he goes. Exams are nothing like the homework or problems he does in class. Its honestly surprising that after all these years Dr. Criss is still this awful of a professor.
This class is just AP Physics 1 from Wish. Horrible teaching style, do not take.
crisses teaching style is not awful, but yes, the exams are ATROCIOUS. Exam 1 was alright, and exam 2 gave me a panic attack in the middle of it, the worst exam ive ever taken. However, the curves are EXTREMELY generous. Study hard and solve the problems that you know, and you will pass with a B, but im pretty sure passing with an A is impossible.
He is very enthusiastic about what he is teaching and try to make you understand the fundamentals. However, if you're an average Joe like me who cannot understand Physics, don't take him. Best wishes
Though he curves the exams, he really is a tough grader. His teaching does not help me prepare for the exam.
I honestly like his teaching style, but the thing is, you have to follow every thing he says as if your life depended on it. You need to show up, take notes, and pay attention the ENTIRE time. Life is easy when you do these things, but if you get behind it's next to impossible to catch up again. Tests are very difficult, but the curve helps a lot.
Tests are hard. If it's not hard then it's ambiguous sometimes. Like you have to get what he meant. First test went well, second and final were hell. The average was 7-9 /20 in both classes of his. He curves a lot but it's depressing to study so much Physics. And when I say it's hard, I MEAN IT. Just take McCommick or someone folks.
the best part of his class was the end
He does not explain things in a way students would understand even after being asked to repeat it, refuses to answer questions a lot of time since he believes students should know the answer, are not able to access the textbook for help due to him not doing the work that way, homework every lecture, and tests weighted very heavily
I did not show up to class but managed to end up with B. However, I feel it's very difficult to end up with an A in this class. do problems in mastering to help with tests.
Does not use +/- grading. 3 tests are 75% of grade (1st 20%, 2nd 25%, 3rd 30%). Homework 25% (1-2 online assignments per week). Long tests with low student scores (usually 9/20 on average) but strong curve. Knows his physics, but struggles with explaining and answering questions well at this level
Do you want to fail physics? Do you want to leave the class right when you step foot in a lecture? Do you hate yourself? If you said Yes to any of these, take Criss. His lectures are pointless because the notes he gives don't help with the homework or tests. Nothing can prepare you for his 3 exams. The average is 8-10 out of 20 on his tests.
Criss is horrible at teaching, is very arrogant, and passive aggressive. The entire class is based off 2 exams and a final, but he does curve homework. He gives way more questions than time allotted because of the way he curves tests. Due to his curve, he is the better option, but he will make this class harder than upper-level physics classes.
The grade is based on weekly assignments and the exams are all multiple choice questions. He curves the exam grades. Regarding his teaching, I think he is not that good but not that bad either.
Its hard to put Criss in a category rating. He is a great lecturer and clearly knows what hes doing, but his condescending and harsh nature + the rigor of the exams makes his class a very difficult experience to live through. While i dont think hes the worst professor in the world, this class will involve a large amount of your time.
Criss makes my friends want to leave the university. I am on the verge of losing a long-life friend. What a crisis! Don't take his class unless you want to fail physics
Dr.Criss definitely is a very good teacher and is a genius in his field. But if you need a good grade, you might have to depend on luck sometimes as his exams are very hard and tough to finish. His homework assignments cut off points very easily. He is open to questions and explains really well. But he is very strict, better watch out!
For his problems in physics class, Dr. Criss expects you to come prepared with examples from the HW that you want to see worked through, but then he complains that he doesn't want to give you the answers and you should know the material from his lectures. I only took this class because I needed 1 more credit and worked on other stuff during class.
Dr. Criss doesn't teach physics in a way that is student-friendly. He goes through examples quickly and his tests are extremely hard. I found it a lot easier to learn from examples on Chegg than to follow his lectures. The homework and his teaching don't help on tests at all, but you won't pass without the notes (if you can make sense of them).
Do you want an easy A? This class isn't for you, but if you actually pay attention to his lectures(which are good if not great) and honestly attempt the homework, then it will be a great class. Extremely easy to access outside of class for help as he responds within minutes. Take him if you need to understand the material well.
Dr Criss is knowledgeable, he knows his stuff. But he is rude and can have no mercy with grades. He curves your exams, and they were MCQ when I took his class. It's hard to get an A in his class, HWK is due before every class.
i did not take this class this semester but i just wanted to say again you are terrible at your job robert randy criss please stop being the head of the department you make us seem like a poverty department
Why did Nohra have to reteach my Statics class the most basic of Physics 1 content as if we had never even taken the class? It is truly baffling that I learned more about physics in the first two Nohra lectures than I did in the entirety of this class. Bravo, Randy, Bravo.
Criss is a man that is very knowledgable in physics but not how to teach it. While the first and second tests were alright, the final was not it. The curve will save you though, and he has homework due every week. Take him if you're willing to hang onto every word of his and use his "process". He's not bad at the subject he's just bad at teaching.
very good professor, has good lectures. exams are hard but fair, and the curve is very generous. compared to prior physics courses in high school, i retained a lot more knowledge in this course than others.
The content is very difficult and hence his exams are difficult as well. The class average was always around 50% correct responses (eg: 10/20 questions correct), which he curves to a 75. The curve will save you. 2nd exam is the hardest. Finals was easier than 2nd. Rarely attended his lectures, so can't comment on his teaching. HW is due each week.
Genuinely tries and succeeds
His lectures are pretty quick and he does not explain things very well. He also tends to waste time by going off on tangents and has to rush the most important parts of the lecture until the end in which you have little time to ask questions as he also rushes out of the class too.
A GOOD PHYSICS PROFESSOR? This professor is a role model for being there for his students. I can't even begin to explain how helpful he is, how devoted his is, and how much work he's done to help his students in any way he can. Physics is hard, and I respect his efforts greatly. Go to this guy if you wanna learn.
He is an amazing teacher. And no, that is not sarcastic. If you want to learn physics concepts and have a love for the subject, 100% take him. But get ready to study. His tests are HARD. But everyone thinks the tests are hard. So you only have to perform better than the class and you will easily get an A (thanks to the curve). No extra credit tho.
take someone else
He is such a good professor and he makes sure that you understand the information that he teaches. He's funny and open to questions. You can tell that he knows and loves physics and is really passionate about teaching it. Definitely taking him for 2049! The tests are kind of hard but you just have to study and there is a curve.
Chooses and orders homework assignments poorly. Bad lectures, sometimes in class we enter Calc II or III material despite prerequisite is only Calc I. Takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to give us 1-3 formulas if we are lucky, that will be used on exam which is a few google searches away. Sometimes we get 0 formulas we need for course work. Not fun time.
very good lecturer. genuinely cares about his students learning. he has very cool lab demonstrations in class sometimes, and can explain very well difficult physics concepts. i took him for phy 2048 and 2049, so definitely one of my favorite professors if not my favorite at usf.
Textbook is required, however Dr. Criss does not teach directly from it. Lectures are great, though are different from other professors. No + or - grades on final grades. Tests are always curved to make the class avg 75%. Homework is done through Pearson, but allows for multiple attempts (question based). MC tests. Great prof would take again.
Absolutely terrible. Literally said in class that curves are "a recipe for mediocrity," just to give you a glimpse at his personality. The average grade on his MULTIPLE CHOICE final was a 19/40. All the tests had an average of an F. You have no chance to do well, you just have to try to do better than everyone else and hope the curve saves you.
Lectures are great, but keep in mind that exams are very heavily weighted in the course. Exams are multiple choice. No extra credit opportunity.
Criss has a very different teaching style from other professors. He focuses only on the theory of topics, leaving the applications and problem-solving to you. I found reading the textbook and attempting homework problems before lectures was very helpful. Exam questions are much easier than the homework, and exams are curved generously.
Honestly, he was a very rude/mean person. I was not happy with asking questions about anything. He also did not explain anything well at all. he also went over nothing in class that was on the test or homework. will need to teach yourself. Luckily there is a chonky curve so just hope you are in a class w low averages.
He truly knows what he teaches, and is passionate about it. You can get a good crack at some of his jokes and he likes to do small physical experiments on class that help your understanding. His exams aren't hard, but the questions were too long, especially in the final, it's almost impossible to get 100% on it. And he's NOT rude, btw.
if you want to stay sane don't take this guy. had to retake physics 2048 over the summer because i struggled a lot in his class over spring. choose eggers
Not the worst, but definitely not for everyone. He will really only help you if you solve equations his way. He shortly goes over hw and formulas before spending the rest of class on examples. He does give a generous curve for exams (curved 75% avg; all multiple choice) + allows a formula sheet, but exam questions are still pretty difficult.
He is an alright professor, I just don't do very good with his teaching method which is spending the whole class time on practice problems. His tests are HARD but all multiple choice and the average is always around 11/19 which he curves to be a 75%. He does try to connect with students by telling stories and doing demonstrations which is nice.
I personally think Dr. Criss is a very caring and kind professor. His class is very difficult, but he is overly willing to help you and seems like he wants his students to succeed not just in his class, but past it. You will have to put in work to do well. Physics is not usually my thing but Dr. Criss actually made it pretty interesting often.
You get three tests and a homework grade. Lectures are below average and his notes are below average. I would not recommend this teacher especially if you need to get an A for some GPA requirement. There are a lot of mistakes on his tests and it will make it a lot harder to get a higher score.
Hes a good professor, he lecutres based on his own ways of solving which can make the class a little more difficult since you can't really go to the textbook. Th exam are multiple choice and usually curved USE THE TEXTBOOK PRACTICE QUIZZES. they are a lifesaver when studying. don't alway bet on the curve it won't save you everytime.
The dynamic at play for PHY2048 with Robert Criss is interesting. It's astonishing how well you can understand the lectures and the homework… yet still fail the exams. If the class averages for all three exams were all F's, perhaps the issue lies not within the students, but within the professor. I do not recommend Robert Criss for PHY2048.
I had a hard time understanding his lectures hes bad explaining physics for someone taking physics for the first time. If I had to retake Criss,I would study your notes everyday and learn material before coming to class to better understand it. Hes shameless tests are almost nothing like what lectures or Homework overall super difficult.
Robert Criss is infamous in the University as a very tough professor who would do anything but be lenient. His lectures are confusing and he teaches a very big class, so asking questions in the middle of class is also very difficult. Whatever good I did on the exams, I took help from CramBetter. They saved me.
This class is test heavy, the homework barely adds to the total. The tests are pretty tough get ready to spend hours studying for this class. Start studying for this class since the day one. If you cannot handle alot of calculus do not take Calc 2 and this class together it can get really hectic, you will end up with a B in either of the one class.
In my opinion, lectures can be interesting; his tests are a bit harder, but if you study correctly, you'll do well.
His lectures are great. I try to attend most even if they're not mandatory. His explanation can be tough to understand at first, but ultimately, he just doesn't want students for fall into the plug and chug pipeline. Do your homework and practice problems. The exams are tricky not hard, you have been given everything you need to solve them.
Great lectures, fun experiments in class. The materials are calculus-based but not really tough. He will take time to explain things in-depth which is a bit confusing, but he won't make you do crazy integrals or anything. Tests aren't hard, formula sheets allowed.
Lectures were boring as he just did hw problems on a white piece of paper. He also insisted on coming to class which is fair but he claimed he didnt rely on the textbook (which is required) and insisted on you doing it his way. The homework is worth 20% and the exams are worth 25% each and final is worth 30%. Sweet, condescending, and brutal prof.
IMO Criss gets too much of a bad rap sometimes. Yes, his exams are hard, but it's very doable if you put in the time to study. He explains the math part of Physics well, and has cool demonstrations in class. Attend lectures, take notes on how questions are solved, do the HW, and study well before an exam. You will get rewarded for your effort.
I took his class twice, and got a higher grade when I didn't study for the class at all, I believe this class is about pure luck. Went to every class, took notes early, did well on all the homeworks, and still ended with a 66%. I would proceed with caution, especially if you need an A in this class. Test heavy, no study guide, vague and difficult.
Do not take this professor. On exams, you get 1 hour to answer 20 questions. Most of them were never discussed in the lectures, homework, or practice quizzes. He will throw questions at you that were never taught. All of the effort that you put into the insane amounts of homework or studying until you're blue in the face will be for nothing. Avoid.
Your going to have to study more for this class then any other class do not recommend taking over summer most people pass there second attempt
The class is light. However, some email replies I received from him could warrant a report to HR they were so disrespectful.
