Going to class is useless but he has an attendence policy which he enforces. He'll give you an incomplete if you miss too many days. Pointless and boring overall.

i liked him, took him 2 semesters. class was early and boring, but he was funny-tough papers but the 2 tests were easy-he gave up a huge study guide of terms. identeify the terms on your own and your golden. find a buddy to split it, I got A both semester

Crout was a pretty good prof. He was a lil boring, but he teaches history, boring can't be avoided. He was strict with his attendence policy, but you could miss 10 days of class, thats not too bad. He is worth taking.
Very,very easy. Only A I've made in a history class above the 100 level. Nice guy, but kind of boring. His lectures are kind of hard to follow, sort of unclear.

Total dork-he will start singing show tunes in class, which I dont mind if he were a nice guy, but he makes kids feel stupid if they dont't understand something or ask a question thats sort of out there. smart, but he never grew up.
Great teacher. Teaches more than what's in the book...actually teaches history! Lectures are sometimes boring, but NOT if you pay attention, keep up w/ the reading, and have a brain. I'd strongly suggest taking at least one class from him!

Don't listen to any bad comments about the guy. A great teacher, who is very intelligent, and at times can be funny. Of course it gets boring at times, but tests are straightforward. If you go to class, and study for tests you should do very well.
He cracks some funny jokes. Good sense of humor, serious about his teachings.
If you do the work he assigns, then you can sleep through class everyday. His tests are easy, and he always gives study guides. But he's really really boring. 10 absences allowed every semester, which is alright.
not his class isnt bad if u like history and want to do all of the readings-he asigns 2 books,textbook,&'sourcebook' readings if u keep up hes ok but otherwise he sets u up to get so lost really really boring class
this guy is nice--breaks out in song once in awhile.. but is really passionate.. gives you a lot of opportunites for grades...not your average history teacher
I thought he was pretty easy. The two book review essays were the most difficult part of the class. The Finial was easy. Rarely read, got an A. He may seem a bit odd in class but it approachable and a nice guy outside of class.
Good person with a unusual perspective on history. Bent over backwards to help you whenever he could. Don't take offense to anything he says because he doesn't mean it. Need a strong background in the fundamentals or you will be lost.
I have always not liked history and never remembered a thing. Easy tests. I remember everything from this class... and we got to sit out on the cistern and listen to anti-war music. He's a cool cat.. take him :)
Crout goes out of his way to help his students and is always willing to meet during office hours. The best aspects of his class: he highly encourages discussion and analytical thinking. I have had him for History 103 and 104 and recommend him.
Well everyone can agree on one thing, you need to do the reading, but it's really not that difficult. The test come straight from the study guides and he is very helpful. I took him two semisters in a row. If I had to take another history I would stick with him again. BEWARE OF HIS SINGING THOUGH!
He was my favorite prof so far at CofC. You really have fun in this class and learn A LOT. Great notes, books, and awesome stories! KNOW EVERYTHING ON THE STUDY GUIDE. Hes just a really great guy

awesome history teacher...yea a bit different but makes the class that much more interesting. takes a very humanistic/factual approach to history and is an asset to cofc. i'd reccommend him to anybody!
awesome, awesome, awesome professor. i HATED anything to do with history and he made me want to major in it! he's full of interesting facts and relates events in history to today's life. 2 hard papers, and a few big tests, but he's a really easy grader. i can't say it enough: TAKE HIM!
I dont think he's as great as everyone says he is. Yeah, it's a pretty easy class, I don't study for the exams more than 45 min and I get B's, but the articles and book reviews are a pain. Boring class because half the time he loses his focus and can't remember what he was gonna write on the board.
The most BORING class anyone can sit through. He is very unclear as to what he wants his test have nothing to do with the study guides he gives you. Too demanding for a 100 level course. Tone of writting. If you want to committ 150+ hrs of your life to history then this is the class to take. Otherwise STAY AWAY!!!!!
You've really got to have an active interest in history and analyzation of events for this class. Gives you lots of summaries and essays to write, which = busy work. READ THE BOOK. tests come from the book and maybe two things off the study guide. MC are very hard, lots of essays. alright guy, kinda off beat, and LOVES to talk about himself :(.
Interesting class and Crout is a good teacher. He is very devoted to his work, but sometimes forgets he is teaching people who know nothing about what he is talking about. Tests are easy, the multiple choice is tricky. you must read to book or get the book notes from www.ablongman.com! Doesnt remind you of assignments ever so keep on your toes!
Yo, there may be a lot of writing assignments and homework, but what history class doesnt require writing. Prof Crout is a great teacher and really cares about his students and cares what they do even after they get out of college. genuine guy all around. class participation is a must. he really likes people who respond to what he's talking about.

I took his maymester evening class and it wasn't too hard. In class he barely covered anything that was on our tests, so going to class was pretty much a waste of time.
Class was some what boring and he didn't go over that much information about each topic. He knows alot and hes published but he CANNOT teach... F.Y.I. if your in SNAP dont take him. I will admit that what he did go over was interesting but the class I took at a community college was better.

DO NOT TAKE! Inconciderate and rude. Although he is smart, he thinks he is smarter than God. I went to him for help, and all he did was make me feel stupid for not understanding. Class was pretty tough...He gives study guides for tests but it is SO MUCH MATERIAL....4 papers which are not bad but test can be tricky...you basically have to teach yourself b/c his lectures are so scattered...I would not take him again
OK, so anybody can read and memorize stuff from a text book. He gives you a study guide which he makes the tests from. Just make flashcards based off the study guide and you'll rock the tests. His lectures are focused on what's between the lines of your text. Suck it up, slackers, and appreciate that he does more than make you memorize dates.

I've never heard of anyone more concerned with the "passive voice." If you don't know what that is, take this guy and you'll find out. Loves to talk about himself / show pictures of himself. He showed us a history chanel program that he just happened to be in. Also, when we were taking our final, he did a weird lip sync routine to "Happy Trails."

He's not that hard. He is definitely a weird guy that blurts out random songs...but overall his class is easy. Attendence is mandatory and his lectures are quite confusing, but he gives you a study guide. Few tests and a few papers. I recommend him.
prof crout is a pretty easy man to get along with. attendance is not mandatory and his tests are not too hard if you go to class and study the study guide he gives you. he is a little crazy though, ie he breaks out in song whenever possible

Crout's a pretty easy guy, he's not very difficult at all. The artifacts are a pain in the booty, but overall the class isn't bad whatsoever. I only study right before the test and I've aced each one. Attendance is not mandatory and there's hardly ever a homework assignment. Totally recommended.
Oh boy. He's interesting for sure. Could talk the paint of a wall. Test are okay. Writing assignments are confusing. Drink a lot of caffenie and go to class and you should do well. Missed his final by accident and he let me make it up.
Took his Lafayette class, and was absolutely miserable. I'm a History Major, and i was excited before taking it. Knowledge on the subject didn't grow any,and i felt like i was doing time. STAY AWAY. He's always right, you're always wrong.There's just so many better ways to waste your time. Try basket weaving. lol.
Crout's one funny dude. I thought he was a great guy and certainly interesting to listen to though he has the tendency to go off on rants. The class is very easy... just come to class and take notes and you'll do fine. The only problem I had was he was a little (actually quite a lot) vague when giving assignments.
Professor Crout is pretty easy, but very annoying. He definitely knows what he's talking about, and he explains things well, so take good notes, and you will do fine. He makes everyone do an in class group presentation, and he's very lenient when he grades it. He has a tendency to interrupt students and to make extremely lame jokes. Take his class.
Huge movie fan. He's always quoting movies and talking about movies. If you don't care for history then his class is alright. Sometimes he gives the wrong facts though. You'll recieve a study guide for tests. Study that and you'll do fine.
Can't stand the man. Class is ridiculous easy and great for an easy A. But you have to deal with his constant lame jokes and with his incessant interupting during others' presentations (it bothers me in the WAY he does it, not in the fact that he interupts). In summary: Annoying but EASY.
He's pretty annoying and weird. He sings a lot. But i like the way he teaches history. His tests weren't bad, and neither were the papers. If you can deal with him, his class isn't hard.
His teaching techniques are definitely unique and his exams are not the easiest (neither are his paper requirements) but he is good at showing you why it is important to learn history in the first place.

really really boring! i am not a history person, but his teaching style was horrible. had reading quizzes for every chapter that were so specific they were impossible even after reading the chapter. he does not lecture about what you even read in the book! test formats were always changing... requires a lot of study time outside class.

He does not help you out in the least and if you ask him a question he lectures to you for 45 minutes. He thinks he is hilarious (hes the only one) and he is extremely rude. Even though some people had issues with him, by the end of the semester our entire class ended up thinking he was hilarious and actually appreciated his teaching methods. They are bizarre and take some getting used to but if you are willing to put the effort in you can actually learn a lot from Crout.
good professor in the fact that he does not expect the impossible from you. the material he expects you to learn is manageable and pretty interesting. that makes class bearable. however he laughs when people answer questions wrong and makes you feel dumb for having the opinions you do. never listens to what students have to say. not recommended
Dr. Crout is very eccentric. At the beginning of the year everyone in the class thought he was crazy. He will bust out into a random song during class, but you grow to love it! What he says in class basically has nothing to do with the tests..but he will randomly throw in something he said. EASY grader! Take his class!!
Crout is invited by the college to teach among his other projects. I suggest he is never invited again! His classes are agonizingly boring for someone who loves history! He is easy but doesnt go over half of what we should, like doing the Cold War in a DAY! Highly unrecommended, attendance is necessary for passing, easy A not worth his lectures!
Worst teacher I've had in my college career. It is a complete waste of time, he reads from the book and gives busy work that is a waste of time. Taking this class was a disservice and a monumental waste of time. He's old and stuck in his ways and refuses to admit when hes wrong. Do yourself a favor and take someone else and actually learn
good lord. this class was such a waste of time. don't bother asking questions or ask him what the heck he's talking about because you'll be brushed off. take something to read or your laptop to class and then study the study guides he gives, you'll be fine on the tests.

This class was a complete waste of time. He expects you to read AND fully annotate each chapter of the text book and will get angry if you don't write comments everywhere. His "lectures" jump around and he makes no sense, all he does is song and reference songs. The study guides prepare you for the test enough and the tests are pretty easy.
He is a joke and it is painful/funny to watch him function. He definitely knows his history and has no problem making sure his students understand just how intelligent he is. Thankfully his class is ridiculously easy so long as u read the books and use the study guides. Just bring your lap top so you have something to do during his lectures.
He's a great professor. Sure he randomly sings and quotes old movies all the time, but I have learned a lot from his class. He gives great study guides to ensure good grades on the tests. One group project and no final, just a paper at the end of the term. Take him if you want an A and a good laugh during class.
Berates everyone in the class at the beginning of the semester and everyone hates him at first. But after a while you get used to him and if you manage to stay awake during his lectures you actually learn a lot of information. There's literally a method to the man's madness if you can get past the odd cultural references, definitely would reccomend
Very odd, and at first you'll hate his class. After a little while, you'll get used to his interesting-ness. He's relatively easy! He gives a very thorough study guide, and as long as you follow it, he's an easy A. The first few months, you have to underline in the textbook for a grade, but it forced be to actually read, and do well in the class.
This guy is awesome, I was a terrible student, never did any work, and even during class when we had to pull out a book we were suppose to read and write a report on it, I didn't have the book, and obvi didn't read it. And he pulled me out in the hall, told me it was ok, and I could make it up next time.....The man is a G. Take Crout super funny!
This professor has very clear ideas for the structure of this course. Sadly, he fails to share these ideas with the rest of the class. He requires that you underline your textbook under guidelines that are mysterious to you until he decides to reveal them. He is a great man when he isn't making stupid jokes, but I did not like this class at all.
Dr. Crout is a very strange man who spends most of his time making his students feel uncomfortable. He doesn't actually teach the course but instead has a group of students present each chapter. Also requires his students to mark up every little section of their book (without giving them clear instructions on how this is being graded.) Do not take.

Allowed 10 absences. Have to mark up each chapter in the text for a grade. I just skimmed them and still did well on the tests because they mostly come from lecture. Usually 20 multiple choice plus a take home essay. Just use ur book to look up the terms on the study guide and you'll do fine. One 3-5 page paper for final which is a reflextion.
Very odd man. He has a few students he will always pick on. Although I did not like the course at all and almost never marked up my book for hw, I ended up with an A-. If you do well on the presentation and paper, you're fine. I don't recommend taking him if you can avoid it.

Very weird and uncomfortable guy. Picks on certain people and makes very awkward jokes. Didnt care too much for his teaching style either. Very all over the place. Test were easy and project very easy. Avoid if possible but if you have to just get on his good side.
I really did not enjoy this class. The way it was taught was very old fashioned and unstimulating. The only plus was that although attendance was mandatory you got 8 free absences. I definitely took advantage of that because I knew I would not be missing anything revolutionary.

He's one of those professors who wants you to come by his office for everything. If you've got a quick question he can't reply to your e-mail. I thought Professor Crout was hilarious. Certainly not the best professor, but easy and likable. Definitely a little loony, but I thought it made history more interesting.
Professor Crout is at times sadistic. He gets pleasure from embarrassing his students in front of the class and (during) student presentations. His subject matter is interesting, but all over the place. He requires that you mark up your textbooks before coming to class. Try to avoid his class if at all possible!!

Had to withdraw from this class, not by choice. My dad died and I was out of school for 2 wks. Every professor was understanding, except Crout. I went to the head of the dept. to override Crout's decision, but it was ultimately left up to him. His lecture is a joke, but if you use the study guides, Easy A/B. Doodle drawing skills will improve.
He's an interesting guy. He likes to make corny, outdated jokes and sing into his microphone. The class is kind of boring, but if you take the time to go over the study guides he sends before each test you'll get a good grade. The class is easy, just very boring.

Horrible class. Tried to be an art history and archaeology class along with history, did neither well. Dr. Crout goes off on tangents and throws in objects haphazardly so if you're actually interested in history, don't take this class with Dr. Crout. Textbook is awful as well.
Horrible professor with a horrible textbook to match. No consideration for differing learning methods. My class personally complained to the history dept. multiple times about his horrible attitude towards his students. Class was easy, but the professor alone made me lose interest in history.
Super easy class but Dr. Crout is extremely boring. Calls out people in class for little things like not taking every single note he says. Writes notes on the back of the attendance sheet and projects them onto the board. He gets sidetracked very easily. His tests are not on really anything in the lectures or even the power points for that matter.

Assigns chapters for the test, but ever talks about anything in the textbook. Jots down a few things during class, but he's incredibly unclear as to what he's actually teaching. Expects you to master everything he's ever said in class and everything written in the book. Rude to most students, sarcastic. By far the worst teacher I've ever had.

Class was ok. I tool advantage of the amount of days we could miss. His tests are pretty easy of you do the study guide. There are some things he doesn't cover but he still puts them on the test. He gives take home essays that are pretty easy. He graded pretty leniently on the first two take home essays. However, I wouldn't recommend taking him.

Professor Crout gives long, boring lectures and tends to get side-tracked. Only a couple of easy tests that cover definitions, so study and you'll get a good grade. One independent paper and presentation. Boring yet fairly easy class.
Openly rude and disrespectful to students and professors. Only 3 grades so they matter. After our first test, he showed us a doodle he'd done, inspired by how he thought we would do on the test. It was a giant F. He expected us to fail,then gave us fake grades that were higher than ours,only to reveal our worse grades after. Just read the book.
Teaches Pre-Modern History, which is any course that takes place before the 1500s or Medieval times. He teaches about the Founding Fathers. I personally find this highly bewildering. The WORST professor I have ever had! Rude, crass, inappropriate, and sarcastic. There were never enough assignments given to help study for the 3 exams given. I had four pages of notes the time in his class before I dropped. Nothing was ever posted online and he always made his notes during class on an overhead.. Do not recommend!!

He is AWFUL! You know it's bad when in the text book you get someone puts a little note saying if you have him to run away. He likes to push his values and what he thinks is right or wrong out in the middle of all of his lectures. If you don't read every 30-40 page chapter and highlight them in this book you will not pass. RUN AWAY if you can.
Worst teacher ive ever come into contact with. Condescending, does not cover even a small amount of the material on the test, and very rude. Three tests are the only grades, which you're gonna have to read your textbook back to front to pass. This class was horrible and I find it amazing that this man is still employed. Professor Crout is mean and unpleasant. I definitely would not recommend taking him. His class is easy enough, but he's just not nice to be around for any amount of time. 3 tests and 2 short papers.
Lectures never made sense. He makes things way too difficult. He prepares you very little for the tests.
You will hate this teacher. Gave me a zero on a paper for not putting the essay question as the title verbatim. literally. guess I missed the class where he said that was mandatory. The when I met him at his office the next morning it became 100% clear that he never read the paper, he gave me a 0 after seeing the title. Makes you drink after class
I would gather that his use of handing out a study guide for what he says you need to know for the exam is equivalent to handing a Big Mac recipe to a taxi driver and expecting them to fix your tv antenna
I don't know why Dr. Crout has such a low rating on here. He's not everyone's style, but his class is enjoyable and you'd have to be an idiot to fail it. Also, he spontaneously sings in class and makes tons of retro pop culture references.
Not sure why his rating is so bad. Attendance is not mandatory. You have 3 tests, (not a cumulative final, just a 3rd section exam). He drops the lowest of your 3 tests grades. Doesn't get much easier than this. Sure, he's kind of weird, but sometimes he sings. It's pretty entertaining really.
At the surface he may seem like a horrible teacher, but if you stick with him long enough you'll see that he is actually teaching you relevant information and that he is a nice guy.
Crout's tests are based on his lectures, so attending class is really important. He's funny, a good professor, and teaches relevant material. I don't know why people trash him on here, because that's not the Crout I know. His class can be slow at first, but picks up afterwards. Getting an A in his class is easy if you put in the effort.
Crout is a great professor and I don't know why his rating is so low. He's a unique and funny guy and people should open their minds a little. If you fail his class, it's on you and not him because his tests are easy and so are the essays.
If you come to class you wont know what youre learning. If you try to ask a question, DONT BOTHER!!!!!! He will make you question yourself or not answer it. He has 3 exams and a few essays. Easy class overall.
Crout is a pretty good professor. His lectures are boring, and you dont gain much information but he gives a study guide before each test that tells you everything you need to know. You only have 3 tests and the lowest one is dropped. Those are the only grades for the class.
He is rude, goes on and on in class about random things, and speeds through notes. Makes history extremely boring, and over analyze things. I would not recommend, but if you love long readings and a boring class then go ahead.
One of the worst professors you could have. Professor Crout gives three tests the whole semester, so if you do poorly on those you won't pass. His tests cover completely different material than his lectures do. DO NOT TAKE!

Not too bad of a professor, took his class fall 2019. His class was mainly lecturing, but he seemed to go off on tangents which made us fall behind on material. However you could honestly just read the textbook and given assignments, do the study guide and you can pass easily, for example, you could skip and still pass but attendance is mandatory.
He is more of my issue than his class is. He's just weird, and a type of rude that only shows itself with a high level of social ineptitude.
I dont know why he has gotten pretty low ratings. Hes an interesting guy, you dont get penalized for missing a certain amount of classes, and hes nice so long as you arent disrespectful or judgmental in class (then hell roast you, its pretty funny actually). He does go on tangents sometimes but overall not a horrible teacher.
This teacher is TERRIBLE. you have 3 exams the entire semester and he is a terrible teacher. He has lectures that make no sense and you read the textbook and thats it. He doesnt help his students at all and gives no extra resources. Do not take this class
Dr. Crout is a super nice professor, but this class is not easy. There are only 3 tests the whole semester, so each one has a lot of impact on your grade. As long as you pay attention in class and take notes you will be fine. A few things not talked about in class can be found in the textbook, but he gives study guides so you know what to study.
This professor is probably the worst-- and i am putting that nicely. his lectures are very heavy and so are his test. I am pretty sure at one point, our whole class was failing and he gives no extra credit opportunities. His lectures are boring and trust me on this... you do not want to take his class.
Professor Crout is not only unclear in his lectures but he is not a good person. He makes rude comments directed specifically at certain students and picks on a new person every day. If you're missing class due to a medical excuse, he will fail you. He won't help get you notes or anything. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! He is horrible!!!
Professor Crout is old-school and very picky, you have to get permission to use a laptop in his class and he'll check your notes after each lecture. There are also very few tests and they are tough. But aside from that, its an okay class to just sit at the back and take notes and you'll be good. He tries to make jokes which does help.
He is a sarcastic teacher, make sure you take notes because that is the only work you have to do. Tests are not as easy as you think they will be, make sure to read the class material.
absolute train wreck. Threw a pencil case at a student because he was on his phone before class even started. Embarrasses and picks on students. Gets extremely mad over EVERYTHING. Focuses more on how we act that actual material of the course. Shames people for not being able to afford textbook. just a disgusting human being who needs to quit.
Im a history major and this man has made me hate it purely because of his teaching. He is rude, unprofessional, disrespectful, and borderline abusive to his students. He shakes you if you cant afford the text book and has no shame in throwing pencil pouches or worse at you for being on your phone before class. Avoid him if you enjoy being happy.
I dropped this class the moment I could tell how much of a self absored guy he was. He went on and on on the first day about how successful he is. I also see he throws stuff at students which shouldn't be allowed at ALL. I hope he gets fired so he can finally get into retirement.
Being in class was really important. Personally, I didn't find this class to be that difficult, but everyone around me was strugggglliiiingg. I would just recommend studying really hard for the tests, and just be in class and you should be alright.
