What a joke! This man acts like a five year boy. Hope you don't talk in class because he might throw a tantrum in the middle of class. And yea, I hope you don't have an illness or have to go to the bathroom because you can't leave class! No breaks!

OK, I'll be the first to admit that the man is a jackass, but anyone who has taken his class can say that they learned more from him than anyone else. Just watch the movies and you'll be fine...and yes, the movies are bad, but hey, it could be worse
I dont understand why someone would give this professor a bad rating. I just had him for my language of film class, and I must say it was a great learning experience. First of all I dont think anyone should be talking while someone is lecturing, its commonsense people. RTVF studnts, take his class.
He is ok. I think he has meloded out since previous semesters. Just go to class and watch the movies and you should be fine. Some of the movies are bad but if you can't watch a movie, what can you do? Pretty easy.
literally the worst professor i've ever had in rtvf. i hear rumors about people that like his class but i didn't know people like that really existed. horrible movies that have little or nothing to do with what you're learning about. too bad this class is a prereq for so many good ones.
The only reason this **** is still teaching is cuz of his Ph.D. He even admits to not being fair, being mean and not there to teach. Avoid him at all cost, he is the absolute worst teacher. Unless you're into being domineered by grumpy, bald ex-military guys.
He knows his material, and communicates it well. I've seen problems arise from lazy students looking for the easy A. The movies are shown to depict examples that are in the book; your movie taste is irrelevant to learning the concepts. Suck it up, this is a univeristy course, not Jr. High.

He knows what he is talking about, he is just not a great public speaker. Keep quiet, watch the films, and listen. You will learn more about film in his class than from any other professor. He is highly critical and can be funny at times, he reminds me of Michael Stipe(REM). He's HOT...
Great professor!!! He tried to scare people off the first day of class, but really it wasn't that bad. I learned a lot. Just make sure not to get behind in watching the films.
If you want to learn something, take him. If you're looking for the Happy-Go-Lucky teacher, don't. Yes he's an ****, but it's so funny. If he thinks your work sucks, he'll tell you that you suck.
This class rocks!!!
genius!
If you are an idiot looking for an easy class to glide through, dont take him. If you want to learn A TON about film you should take him. He is the best teacher on campus. Listen to what he has to say

Bob Davis rules! If you don't like him, you just have no sense of humor, you don't want to learn and be challenged, and you don't truly appreciate film! Baaah!

ha ha! so true. i concur....

Davis is awesome! I'm an akumni and I miss his classes.
Just watch ALL of the movies, take notes, and read!!! You should be fine with just that. Tests aren't hard at all!!!
Easiest instructor I ever had. Too smart for his own good..therefore difficult for him to explain well all the time. However, just watch movies, easy questions, elementary reading. If you watch the movies, you pass...unless u r an idiot then Davis isn't meant for you.
Extremely knowledgeable about the subject (extremely). Go to class, glance over the readings, and most importantly - watch the films. You cannot get a decent grade w/o doing so (weekly quizzes on films starting week 2) - get netflix. Can be an ****, can be funny, always nerdy. Doesn't really think much of CSUF film students though.
davis is greeeeeeat! WATCH all movies, take good notes, and READ the book! Tests are tough but the class is worth it. I got an A. :)
Davis is a nerdy goofball. It's awesome! You have to watch an average of 3 movies a week, with readings and leacture. Quizzes every week on all three. Not bad, just don't watch the movies too far ahead. 3 photo notebooks, 4 storyboards, and 1 paper. There's no final. I don;t know if he looks down or has his eyes closed when he lectures. He's awesom
Lots of busy work. Watch the movies, and don't slack on the Photo notebooks, get them done early.
Professor Davis definately knows what he is talking about. I am not a film major I took this class as a collateral. My advice, don't take this class if your heart isn't in film.
Really weird guy. He is very knowledgable about film. You learn alot in this class, maybe too much about things you dont care. He is very picky, but just do what he asks and youll get a good grade. Lots of outside work.
One of the best and most helpful teachers I have had in the RTVF department. I learned so much about film making in both 370 and 300. Worth taking but expect to do the work if you want to get a good grade.
Stay away if you value your grade!
Take lecture notes and study the hell out of them because his lecture final will drop you many letter grades if you dont. I went from an easy A to a C+ because of this! Everything else is rediculously easy, be prepared to find many locations for your photography projects.
At first, he's seems like a creepo who's not willing to look at his students, but he gets better. To be honest, if you fail this class, you have to admit you've learned a LOT. I still use a majority of what I learned to correct professors I have today. I actually think he's really cool and want to be his friend. This guy knows his stuff for sure.
Davis will tell you the first day to drop the class. If you are not prepared to do the work you should. There is a lot of assignments and about 30 movies to watch. The photo notebooks were tedious also. The class is like 3 times the work of most classes, but I learned more in this class than any other major class I have taken.
Time consuming course. Just do the notebooks EXACTLY as described and watch ALL the movies. That is the hardest part because it takes so long to watch so many films, and i watched barely half. Attendance doesn't matter at all, except to turn in assignments and take tests. He is funny as a person, but his teaching is boring.
He is a Great teacher. I consider that some students who think the professor is horible, then that's great realization for them. Stay away from this major and find new future plan.
I have taken three of his classes and have enjoyed every single one. It's amazing how many things I've learned from him, but more surprisingly, how much of that information has actually stuck with me. He is super passionate about film, which gets you excited for it too. I will admit that by the end of class I developed a school girl crush.
First day of class he tries to get you to drop and over does it reminding you that a "D" is passing. If you go to class watch the movies and work hard on your portfolio you'll do fine. Class is hard but he was helpful and willing to re assess a grade for me. I ended up with a "B" in class after stressing about his "D" is passing comments
Worst Teacher ever. Super anal on every aspect of the assignments, clearly a miserable person. All the kids below are his teachers Aids. Notes, tons of horrible movies, extensive uncreative photography, BORING BORING BORING. Davis is the type of person in the world who everyone hates....
Gives A LOT of work! He is a very picky grader. Take another class if you don't want to do the work. Watching the 30 or so movies, shooting the photo notebooks is time consuming. Not recommended if you're taking a full load.
A nice teacher out of class, but no so during. Grades way too hard and examine's are made to confuse you, trick questions.
NEVER and I mean NEVER...take his comm 300 WEB class. I am not sure how the in class course is but this teacher never emailed me back ever, procrastinated on grades, not helpful to students in need, i basically had to teach myself everything. I was jumping for joy to get a D in this class and I am an A student.
Do NOT take Davis. I currently have 8 emails in my inbox, from my fellow online classmates who are pleading for help. No empathy or understanding towards students who have jobs. Extremely critical grader. If you go to him with concerns, his response is, "You should have dropped the class back in September." BTW, I like films and am an A/B student.
NEVER NEVER EVER TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! out of all 4 semesters that I've gone to CSUF, this is definitely the hardest professor I've ever taken! He is such a hard grader and VERY picky!!! DONT TAKE HIM!! A students will be happy with a C or D!
Davis knows his stuff. But he is an obtuse mofo. The photoportfolios are graded by his aides. I hate them. He's not a bad teacher per se, just too into his own world for his student's good.
Davis is not in this profession to inspire and motivate. He is the type of professor that makes it his goal to torture students. Maybe he has a power trip? I don't know. He prides himself on being picky and assigning WAY TOO MUCH WORK. 3 times the work load of any other class. I regret taking this class. Don't make the same mistake.
THIS CLASS IS ONLY FOR SERIOUS FILM STUDENTS!It was the hardest class ever. The work load is like4-300 and higher courses. You will need to teach yourself, he has 24 lecture units of 15 pages or more-you are graded on in final.Several(25)foreign films you must watch all.The photoshoots are EXTREMELY difficult. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS ESPECIALLY ONLINE.
In my opinion not only the best film teacher I've had but the best teacher I've ever had period. If you are serious about film/somewhat intelligent then you'll love his cynicism. He cuts through the crap (which is 99% of all students' work) and is honest about it. Wish he taught more classes, hes the only teacher I've learned from at this school.
Took this online. There are 38 films you need to watch. Many are foreign. The tests on the films are tough, the test on the subject material is easy. There are long lectures but they are very insightful and he types out everything for you. The photo assignments were easy. He gives you examples of each composition. I learned a lot!
A lot of work but it's not too hard.... In the online class...a lot of pages to read, in lecture units and textbook, but a lot of it's photos/film stills, so it's not like you're actually reading that much. Many of the films were depressing or strange. VERY picky when it came to the photo assignments--work hardest on those.
What a horrible professor to say the least. I wish I could say other stuff but it wouldn't be posted. The man cannot be satisfied. No wiggle room with him you are either completely antisocial like him and have nothing else to do but this class, or you have a life and other classes. He shouldn't teach if he keeps putting peoples work down.
Took him online and probably the best class I've taken. A lot of work and movies to watch but worth it at the end if you are a serious film student. Learned so much from him.
Definitely do not take this teacher. For an intro class he grades very harshly. I am an A to B student and I received a D turning in all the assignments and tests on time. He gives so much work that I have spent more time here than my other 4 classes combined. I've had to put in extra study hours than the 9 he asks for a week.
This class requires an extreme amount of work, be prepared! This is not a class you can fall behind in! As long as you stay on top of everything you will do fine. There is no way around watching the movies or completing the assignments. Do the work and put in the extra effort.
OH MY GOD, this class was hard! And it wasn't even the content, it was the work load and time you need to dedicate to this class. I am a full time student & used to going the extra mile, but I definitely underestimated the work. Davis really expects 1000% attention to this course. I would seriously reconsider taking this course.
Professor Davis is a tough professor. He is very particular about your work & expects a lot out of you in terms of the photo assignments. However, I did learn a lot about the "language of film" from him. He knows his stuff & uses plenty of examples. The movies are a little rough to get through as they are chosen for their aesthetics, not content.
Davis is a horrible professor, his ego carries him to the top and because of this he grades the projects like it is a 400 class, he does not help with assignments at all, the videos he uses to teach are beyond mind numbingly boring, do not take him
For a 300 class this course is incredibly difficult (mind you I am not complaining, I'm just making a statement). I took this course for collateral credit - I am not a RTVF major - so this course was very difficult. I strongly suggest this course only for aspiring film makers and photographers. Very large amount of work for a winter class.
This was an amazing class, I have probably learned more in this class than I have in any other about any subject. The photo projects are tough but not impossible, I managed getting A's on all of my projects. It just requires real effort to be made. Be prepared to watch many foreign movies, all of which were very coherent to the class.
Davis doesn't pull punches when it comes to the projects. He'll tear through everything to dissect exactly what's wrong with it and then give suggestions on how it can be fixed. It can seem at times that he's being harsh, but just remember that he ultimately is trying to help you and you'll be fine. He definitely knows his stuff.
An A-B student & serious bout film but takin this class made me reconsider. I have the passion, but my moral values &outlook on life differ 4m what this class taught. Enjoyed learning "language of film" as its useful but see no reason 2watch every terrible R rated film assigned-not goin 2 p*rn industry-TESTS ARE HARD-But got great grades on projects
One of the most difficult classes I took. Davis comes off as being rude and mean. There is a line between preparing students for the real world and being a jerk, and there were times that line was crossed. However, by the end of the semester, he got to know some of the students and realized we were in different places.
Online class on the language of film. Enjoyed the film selections, and the lectures. Read and watch everything. The photography projects might be a bit more demanding, and sometimes unrealistically so, but don't try to do anything beyond your budget, which is most likely at zero. Think simplicity.
Bobby, Bobby, Bobby. What can I say? His classroom was too big to really get to know us. This class is mandatory- and ridiculous. It's about film, except he treats it like you have a big budget in every movie, setting every frame up like it's a Rembrandt painting. BUY OR GET A TRIPOD WITH A LEVEL, he freaks out if your still pics aren't straight.
This was one of my tougher courses. This requires about 6-8 hours a week. He assigns films, lecture units and textbook readings each week. We also have A photo project, reshoot, and a second photo project. Midterm & final. He provides study guides for the units and reading. This class is do-able, as long as you DO NOT procrastinate /fall behind!
Prof. Davis is one of my absolute favorite teachers at CSUF! There are 3 photo projects (Project 1 has 10 photos and then a reshoot, Project 2 has 40 pictures) and 4 exams (2 exams on films viewed and 2 exams on the lecture notes/readings). You CANNOT procrastinate, this class is NOT easy, but it rewards those who are passionate about Film.
He expects you to remember the smallest, most minute details about movies you watched weeks ago. These movies are also terrible and impossible to enjoy because of how bad they are. The "study guide" is useless. Treats photo projects like a film shoot, which THEY ARE NOT. I'm a film major, and this class shows you how ridiculously stupid theory is.
1st 3 weeks theres quizzes. You have to read over 30 pgs but POWER THRU THEM! Answers r in readings. Only 4 quizzes but they're worth a chunk of ur grade. Prepare to ask friends/actors for help in ur projects. Davis will ask the story behind ur scenes u've chosen. Learn how to use Premiere Pro! He doesn't show u how to use it only critiques ur work
THIS CLASS IS HARD. Students are expected to watch more than one full length subtitle movie a week and then remember minute details for an exam 4-5 weeks later. The projects are tough and time consuming. The class consists of two exams and two photo projects, the timed exams give you less than 25 seconds to answer each question.
One of the most entertaining and charismatic people I've ever met, let alone learned from. He's a great guy who is VERY skilled at his craft, and he genuinely tries his best to really teach everyone. He focuses more on what he thinks will improve the class the most in the moment rather than sticking to a rigid schedule.
This class was one of the hardest classes I've taken in this department. Davis didn't offer much valuable feedback, but did offer lots of criticisim of the photo projects. Make sure your photos are spot on perfect otherwise you will get a poor grade in the class despite doing well on exams.
There's a lot of reading, mainly in the lecture notes. I suggest you write down what you feel is most important in the lecture notes, and all the definitions in the book because that is what the tests are on! Must watch movies, must take excellent pictures for the project. It's very time consuming, but you learn a lot.
Do you like to read a lot? Take him. Weeks will consist of 2 foreign movie to watch, 20-30 pages to read, and about the same amount of power point pages for presentations. Worst experience so far. Only took because I had to.
Robert Davis is by far the worst professor I have ever had. His criteria is very time consuming and difficult to understand. The videos we watched were on another level of horrible films. The photo projects are graded with no leniency at all and his tests are too ambiguous. Please do not ever take any of his classes.
Very time consuming class, don't take if you cannot dedicate large chunks of time. You have to read lectures and certain chapters in the book + watch lots of long movies + 2 photo projects. Material can be challenging, but it's doable. Big photo project toward the end screwed me over because I personally did not have enough time to devote to it.
As a film major, I must say that this was the worst class I have ever taken. Robert Davis is an egotistical professor with useless standards. The photo projects are difficult and the exams are insanely long. He expects students to remember weeks worth of horrible movies and lectures in precise detail. Do not ever take his courses.
Robert Davis is exactly what you think about when you think film snob. His lectures are filled with his arrogant comments and his selections of films are that of someone who seems to never watch movies for the fun of it. He's an extremely hard grader with little to no constructive criticism. Do not take him.
took this class because i couldn't get into the in person class with another professor. terrible. please don't take ( i found out the other professor was willing to take in more students on the first day from a friend who did that RIP ). the "lectures" are a bit hard to follow and the movies are just bad.
Love movies? yeah so did I before I took this class. Picks the most depressing and boring movies I think just to make you hate everything about cinema. Photo projects are impossible because he basically hates on everything you do. The littlest things are graded. Someone hurt him in life and he is now taking it out on his students. DO NOT TAKE
Worst professor I had at CSUF! Made a girl cry cause of his degrading, rude, comments. States he hates all student's work. Only wants his terrible version of your work. Makes mistakes & blames the students. Doesn't know a lot of the equipment he's meant to teach. Don't expect to create anything you care about. Used his buddy's textbook/syllabus.
I took his class and it is not the friendly person to anyone with the disability. It is hard to pass his class he is too pick on the image size and his exam are difficult to understand all the questions, and he will not go easy on his critics also no positive feedback on anything you do. I hope he gets fired for not being a compassion prof.
His reviews freaked me out. I'm glad I took him though because I learned a LOT about filmmaking. I got an A- and I had to work REALLY hard for it. His class isn't impossible to pass, just do the work and don't fall behind. He recognizes when students rush through their work so don't be that person, he'll doc you points badly.
Dont let these reviews scare you. Davis was such a good professor. The movies were really boring and hard to watch, but if you take good notes you're fine. Tough grader but I still managed to get an A on the photo assignments. You just need to put effort into them & make sure youre meeting all the requirements. He also gives examples to help you.
Prof has warned everyone the course is heavy material bc you will need at least 6 to 8 hrs a week to watch films, read lec units, and book. Course wasn't that hard in my opinion you just gotta pay attention. Advice is, ask a lot of questions he will always answer them to help you. Film is not easy to handle but easy once you get the hang of it.
I consider my self a seasoned veteran at fullerton I have had two majors so I have take a lot of professors. Professor Daviss class is impossible his standards are insane. Do not take online course for 300-301 picture project is very very hard you have to get every picture exactly correct or you will fail. Besides Gloria Monti worst CTVA professor
Professor scares students at very beginning about workload. This is not a class to take to get an easy online grade. Weekly movies and readings but manageable. Last photo project is a heavy one. He did grade tough. Make sure to watch all movies, specific questions about plot.
Horrible class. All you do is just watch movies and read his lectures for the exams. Photo projects are also ridiculous. He wants you to get everything exactly from his lectures. Doesn't offer any advice for the ones you get wrong. I wish I found this site sooner so I didn't have to take this class. Now I'm stuck and don't know what to do...
I'm a huge film nerd, but even I had trouble watching a lot of the films provided. I don't believe I have to like a movie for it to be good, but a lot of them were dull. However, this class also introduced me to some of the best films I've seen. Takeshi Kitano, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Wong Kar-Wai, Edward Yang.
Forced to watch movies that we should not have to watch. Several triggering movies and outright dull ones. We should only need to view segments of the movies. Does not provide any homework so if you arent good at taking tests you will fail. One of the worst professors i have ever had and Im a junior.
If I would've known sooner, I wouldn't have taken this class. There's no virtual lecture or anything. Lectures are basically on word documents, so you have to read them. You are expected to memorize the required films, textbook, and lecture notes for the exams. He also grades heavily on the projects, so be ready for critical feedback.
I've had Davis three times now. 377, 300, and 325. If you have good time management you'll be perfectly fine. He gives good criticism, albeit a lil blunt, but good nonetheless. If you're ready to grind and a hard worker you'll be fine. It's college. Meant to be difficult.
Forced to watch movies. You better have a good memory because he will have a 80 quest. Exam on explicit details. Expect to read the textbook because his notes/lectures arent enough to help you with exams. Does not provide any homework so if you arent good at taking tests you will fail. He records students while test taking.
Possibly my toughest professor yet, sad to say this is my first ever withdrawal class. This is a required class in order to take higher division production classes, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND TAKE THE OTHER CTVA 300 PROFESSOR! Prof Davis is very aware of the high drop rate of his class and makes a statement to weed out those who cannot handle the clas
CTVA 300, language of film. It was my first ever class for my major and I lovedd his teaching style. Most professors give you slides to take notes off of if you are asynchronous but in Professor Daviss class he wrote out PDFs that felt like he was actually in person talking to you. Just manage your time well + start your photo projects asap!
Professor Davis is one of the most egotistical teachers that I have ever had. He seems to care more about proving his own knowledge than actually helping students. Doesn't have much nice things to say, as opposed to other teachers who have critiquing classes. From the first day I knew it was a mistake to take his class.
His lectures and movies we had to watch were fine and I actually enjoyed them. The tests were fairly easy as long as you studied, but they are monitered. The photo projects were easy to do, but he doesn't give you much help and not good feedback. It was hard to fully understand what he exactly wanted. I would not take another class with him
Only film majors should be taking this class. Unneccesarily detailed and demanding. There's just no reason for this class to be the way he designed it, UNLESS YOU ARE A FILM MAJOR. Just an awful experience.
I cannot recommend Professor Davis in any aspects. The films he assigns feature an overly amount of discomforting sexual and violent scenes and his workload is excessive, even for an upperclassmen course. I did not learn much from any of his provided readings or feedback on my projects and the language he uses in text is somewhat unprofessional.
24hrs before our first online exams I got rear-ended while I was driving and went to urgent care at midnight. When I emailed him for an extension he only gave me a 4hr delayed testing window (originally 2-6pm but now 7-11pm). Never have I experienced a professor so inept and so incapable of sympathizing or understanding students wants/needs.
He was probably the worst professor I have had in my entire time here at CSUF, it seems like he does not care about his students and the work that they do as every time he mentions student films in his lectures he always talks down about them. He has an inflated ego for no reason and it seems like he doesnt want to be a professor
I know I'm not the only one when I say that dropping this class was a good thing. His powerpoints are fairly brief, but overloaded with other information. His photo projects seem simple, but he's a super knit-picky grader and it gets overwhelming after the second project. I won't be taking another one of his classes.
Half of the tests are literally trivia on random movies without even analyzing them in a cinematic sense. He grades projects horrendously and said projects seem to require a budget if you want even a semi-decent grade.
So I will obviously be in the minority on this but he's really not that bad. I watched every film and I started planning my photo projects way ahead of time. So was it a tough class, yes but as long as you actually put in effort you can get a good grade. Some in my class didn't even watch the movies and then complained about the exams- yikes.
I think you guys are babies tbh. He is a great professor. He packs each class with tons of useful information. If you're complaining I'm assuming you either want an easy A or you don't even like film... reconsider your degree.
CTVA 300 is an okay class for me but not the fact that we have to attend zoom meetings while taking quizzes. He makes us share our screens to monitor quiz progress, despite our discomfort. Open-notes quiz would help due to struggles in CTVA 300. Learning much, I seen worse movies despite the violence and inappropriate stuff in the films!
Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the worst professor and class I have taken in my college tenure. Quizzes are based off opinion littered lectures and crazy minuscule details of the movies assigned. To make matters worse, all quizzes are taken live on a zoom call. Please take my advice and don't take this class or anything taught by Robert Davis
Do not procrastinate in this class and you will pass. Do the weekly modules and do not fall behind. A lot of yall complaining must have been expecting an easy online course that requires no effort. This class does require a lot of your attention I will say, but I learned a lot about language of film and its technical strategies.
Not fully online, meet on zoom for test with camera on mandatory no excuses not even medical or work. For a film class there is no room for creativity only what he wants and believes to be right. Feedback is not helpful. Test are very specific. He specifically said he will not support his students with any rental equipment, he denied us the option.
Professor from hell that doesn't care about teaching his students and expects professional-level work out of them. He constantly talks badly about his students' performance, which is more of a reflection of him as an educator than of his students. His work is manageable, but his personality is not. Too nit-picky, will leave you feeling horrible.
Worst class I've ever taken
He made us do 6 quizzes, 3 of them are about the movies he assigned and 3 others are about notes and short clips. They are all multiple choices, and taken online but you have to be on Zoom call with camera on and screenshare the enntire time. The Zoom call is recorded by him (to use against you if u got caught cheating or being suspected by him)..
Professor Davis runs a tough but rewarding course. While the workload is heavy, engaging with the material and using study aids like unstuckstudy can lead to great learning outcomes. Attend class, do the readings, and you'll get a lot out of this class.
Honestly the most uncaring professor I've ever had. He doesn't answer questions, makes you feel stupid for asking, and the unclear project directions force you to teach yourself everything. Some required films feel unnecessary and uncomfortable. It's disappointing that this class is holding me back because the professor doesn't care or help.
