Ok overall; his lectures are mainly key points from the chapter, and he puts chapter outlines on Blackboard, and basically simplifying the material to make it as easy as possible. He seems to like it when you sit up front consistently, so make an effort to do that. Not a challenge by any means.
Extremely easy. His lectures consist of main points from the book, and he also puts chapter outlines on Blackboard. He is fine as far as people go, but just average as a professor.
Try and avoid him at all cost. He takes his lecures directly from the book, so make sure you know that book from cover to cover but I don't know how much that will help. He creates his own tests so the study guide will not help, and he believes a class average of a 56 on a test is normal. But he does grade on a curve so it may help.
I think that he is a very good professor with interesting lectures. The class average is low, however, since it is graded on a curve it really helps those who studied (I have an A in the class). The only thing is that you have to be willing to read the textbook or else you won't do well, but luckily the textbook is very interesting.
He is a very interesting professor, in the begining I was not doing very well, but then I realized that if you read and do flashcards on all bold words, italized, and experiments done, you can ace the test. besides he gives test practice questions, and post his powerpoints in BB. I recommend highly., Oh, he grades on a curve!
I loved his class, he shows alot of funny movies, and I got good test scores and was practically never there, all you do is study the book, and you will do fine.
This is the worst prfessor that I have had at GVSU. He was never organized, or prepared for class. He was never helpful, and expected his students to know how to write papers at a Ph.D. level. This class was suposed to prepare me for PSY 400, however I did not learn anything. Do not take him!!
TERRIBLE! i can't believe i actually lasted the whole semester! he has no idea whats going on and isn't helpful whatsoever. when i would go to his office hours he wouldn't actually help with anything just talk and ask questions so i couldn't get 2 words in. not fun! no final but huge papers and a presentation at the end (all crammed in too)
Terrible teacher. He treated us like grad students, expecting us to know everything to the T. Very unorganized. No tests, just labs and papers, but i spent the most time on this class. I honestly thought I wasn't going to pass... it's a miracle I did. Find a different teacher for PSY300, cause he'll make your life miserable all semester.
Professor Deaner was slightly rude, and didnt always explain things well enough. overall his teaching skills are alright... but sometimes he takes things too far in class. My experience was just okay, the class was just okay, and his teaching is just okay.
could probably be the easiest class if someone else taught it..
Amazing Professor! You have to read and not be afraid to do work! He is extremely helpful and very nice!
Worst intro class ever. Notes are on BB, but they never really helped with the exams. READ BOOK BACK TO BACK I went to every class, and took AP psych in high school. I am a psych major and yet only managed to get a C. He is very unprofessional. A few students in the class talked when he was not talking, and he called them out in front of everyone.
I really enjoyed him as a professor. He is extremely nice! Everything he does is straight from the book, so if you read and take notes from the book you will be fine. A lot of work, but all PSY 101 classes are. He curved almost every one of our exams.
Class is a little difficult, but he is willing to help you through it. Meet with him with papers and projects because it helps a ton. Don't overstudy for the test. Talk to him, come to class, and you'll be fine
Really good professor. The class is chalenging, but very reasonable. Dr. Deaner does a great job of setting the class up, and provides interesting lectures. I was really dreading this class, but he made it extremely bearable.
Enthusiastic about the subject. Thought the class would be harder than it was. Labs were easy. The midterm and final were from the book and powerpoint. Weren't too hard if you studied for them. Very helpful and willing to meet to answer questions/comments.
Class is all done from power point which are on blackboard. His exams are on the hard side, but overall a good professor.
I had him for PSY 101 and intentionally took PSY 300 with him because he genuinely wants his students to do well. He always offers to help outside of class, but relies on you to take the initiative for everything. The class itself didn't interest a whole lot of people, but it was the best it could have been because he's got a great sense of humor
Very easy class if you go to class and read the chapters. He is funny tries to make boring material not so boring. Tons of movies which help class to go faster. Take him...
deaner is a great prof. if you havent had him yet you should he relates information with the students so they learn better. i wouldnt change a thing about his class.
Professor Deaner has a tendency to be rather rude one on one. I sent him an e-mail to clarify something and he quoted, bolded, and CAPS what I had overlooked in the syllabus. He is knowledgeable about Psychology however his exams are death. Be sure to read the book and take notes in his class -- which can be death as well...
I really like Dr. Deaner, but his exams are evil. I should've studied more.
Dr. Deaner is rather full of himself. Although he is an intelligent man, he does not convey this knowledge to his students very well. DO NOT take him for 300, you will end up doing his research. Overall feels like he is stealing your work all semester so he can publish it the following semester.
I had no problem with this guy other than his toes when he wore flips flops & when he'd let his chest hair stick out. his exams were hard, but he curved them every time & gave study guides; loved it. Final wasn't cummulative, tests were all 45 Q's. He never attacked students, joked occasionally. His lectures are just powerpoint & some video clips.
I don’t really think he is that bad prof. But his Exams are extremely hard. I don’t really recommend him.
deaner is great, exam really arn't bad he curves every exam you take, sometimes adding 30 extra points. To do well on an exam, follow his powerpoint and you will end up fine. I knew nothing about psy. and did little studing and got an A no promblem.
I took as a summer class so a lot of work in a little bit of time, but he was very helpful. It is true that he uses the research his students do in further studies. He is very helpful and open for office hours
He's a nice guy and a good teacher. all the lectures are on blackboard. The tests are pretty much vocab tests and are kind of hard but overall it's a pretty easy class.
He is a nice guy who is very helpful if you meet him halfway. Study for his tests because I didn't study for one of them and did really badly. They require effort. Go in for office hours, go to class, follow powerpoints and you'll be good.
Nice guy and helpful. The class is difficult, but if you go in for help he is glad to talk to you. Take him if you want to work hard and learn lots, but its not by any means an easy A.
I took 375 and 300 with him this semester. Although the material is extremely challenging, he's BRILLIANT! It's like being in the prescence of someone who has really been out there and done some amazing doctorate work, I think it's cool that we have professors like him at GVSU, and I'd be willing to have a challenging course to interact with him!
Takes the award for best prof of my semester. He is just a good teacher period. The class is set up so you do an equal amount of challenging things and easy things that will just help boost your grade, while you learn in the process. He's not too boring, and is extremely helpful. I'm taking a lot from this class.
DO NOT TAKE DR DEANER!!!!! The class is ridiculously hard! WHen you ask him for help during office hours he makes you feel like an idiot! He has us doing 4 different projects at once. Labs are almost impossible and he talks over everyone's head. He wants people to fail his class! He should be teaching grad students NOT undergrads. DO not take him
cool guy but some of his topics were hard to grasp. he enjoys using statistics and assigning homework that requires you to read a big research article. but it was a good class and i learned a lot
So nice. Powerpoints are super interesting, his lectures good. A few reviews of research papers required, but very generous grader. I recommend him.
He was okay. His lectures were interesting but his tests, labs, and project were all very hard. You have to put in a buttload of time with him. I do recommend him out of everyone though. You learn a lot, but be ready to work hard.
If you pay attention, read, and come to class, you'll be fine. He's willing to help you out, so there's no reason to get a bad grade. Also, don't complain to him if you feel overloaded with work. He's willing to be a friend, but don't get comfortable enough to gripe and moan about his assignments. You can tell he hates it. Overall, he's great.
Deaner is very willing to help those who are having difficulty in his class and his lectures are organized and easy to understand. He also posts his lectures online for further studying purposes. He's a reasonable professor who basically tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A, so there's really no excuse to fail this course.
No textbook, but had to print a lot of articles and answer questions about them. Nice guy, but read from the powerpoint verbatim. Really interesting subject. Seemed more interested in his research than actually teaching the class. Test questions were worded awkwardly and sometimes were on things that were never covered.
Great professor. He is extremely helpful and makes sure you understand the information. Has you write sections of the final paper throughout the semester so it is not overwhelming and is easy to understand what he is looking for. I would recommend taking this professor for PSY 300 especially if you don't have a strong STATS background.
I felt he was a really good prof. Honestly, had no desire to take this course but he made it interesting and easy to grasp. My only real gripe is that if you try and tell him something is wrong (when something goes wrong with Excel), he treated students as if they didn't know what they were talking about. It was off-putting.
He is very organized and everything you need to know for exams is on the powerpoints which makes for easy, quick studying. Main research paper is worked on over the course of semester and he is very clear about what he wants. Excellent teacher.
Great prof, easy to talk to. Assignments can be tough if your not a good critical thinker. Full points if turned in on time, really helped my grade since his mid-term and finals can be tough.
Great teacher and he enjoys teaching and is passionate about the material. He is always more than willing to meet during his office hours for help. You need to study for the exams and also put A LOT of time into the research paper. Not an easy class.
Excellent professor. Fun classes. Tough subject but he makes it interesting.
Prof. Deaner is very helpful and lenient on turning in homework if you're having difficulties. Provides Powerpoints and seems like he reads off of them but every now and then e says things not on them and thats the things you should know for the exams! HE assigns reading and responses for every class which are helpful so long as you do them!
He was a okay teacher. The only problems I had were he did make you feel stupid and he doesn’t know how to word his exams. They were confusing and our class average for our midterm and final was very low.
DO NOT TAKE Deaner is the WORST professor I have ever had He treats you like you are stupid and expects you to know everything Our midterm grades were very, very low I wonder why?Because he doesn't know how to teach!he is absolutely awful He was disgusted and disturbed that students emailed him questions they were confused about Exams are impossible
Cool teacher, pretty lenient with homework deadlines if you talk to him about it. Didn't use the textbook much, although it can be useful for clarifying lecture info. He provides powerpoints and sometimes adds info during lectures-I'd recommend printing them before class and adding more notes. Exams were challenging, so STUDY!
There is a fair amount of homework but as long as you do it, you'll pretty much be getting an A. Tests were super easy. Lectures are way grueling and he pretty much reads off the slide. But what you learn is actually pretty cool and group discussions are fun. This is almost more of an evo.bio. course than a psy class so don't come in too liberal.
He made class very interesting and was ALWAYS willing to help others. However, don't wait till the last minute to ask questions on lab, he will get irritable. Also, tests are pretty hard, but he gives a thorough outline a week in advance. Just stay on top of your work, and you'll be fine. I would definitely recommend him to others.
For the research paper, he assumes you are experts on research and makes you feel stupid during the writing process. The tests are not too bad as long as you do the study guide and pay attention when going over the power point slides. Definitely have to work hard for your grade.
Lectures are slightly boring because he typically reads off of the slides which are posted online. Attendance is not mandatory but it is helpful with exam time comes. He has an assignment weekly which are slightly difficult but not too much of a trouble. Make sure to do the assignments and study for the exams and this should be a breeze.
Deaner is a great professor who really cares about his students. the whole class revolves around your final research paper. If you try and do not procrastinate is it easy to finish with at least a B in the class
Did not enjoy this class at all. Deaner is one of the worst professors at GVSU. He is very rude when giving feedback and expects you to be a professional research writer as soon as you come into his class. Focuses alot around his own work and thinks he is the absolute best, just very arrogant. Take a different professor if possible.
Professor Deaner is one of the worst profs at GV. He is very rude when giving feedback about papers. Expects you to be a professional research writer as soon as you walk into his class. Focuses alot around his own work and thinks he is the absolute best, just very arrogant. I do not recommend taking this professor.
LOVE him! Took him over the summer for psy 315 and just this past semester for comparative. Loved that class just have an assignment. Every week and he can tell if you read the articles or not and will deduct. Tests are hard but reviews help a lot! Read your book. Wish he taught more classes!
While you do need to stay engaged in the classwork, going to class isn't exactly essential. He goes over the powerpoints and doesn't really go beyond what's already available to you. It is important to review them carefully and reference the textbook. His tests can be pretty hard if you don't study.
I heard this class was very difficult and I had no idea what the class really was until day 1 and the class is based on evolution. midterm and final. 11 homework assignments and 2 "projects". tests are difficult but if you suck it up on those the homework and 30 pt projects help a lot. Powerpoints have all info, reading isn't curcial but helpful
I enjoyed Psych 315 with him, he was always helpful and would make sure to explain things in a way that everyone could understand. Cares a lot about students opinions and always answers questions. Exams are very hard if you don't study, but he gives a lot of extra credit, which is nice.
He is a horrible grader. The labs were hard and graded hard. I am typically an A student, and found his exams very challenging unless you really prepare for them. I would not take him again. Make sure you know how to use excel perfectly, because he won't be able to explain it to you.
I loved him as a professor and I loved this class. You lecture almost everyday but it is not bad being the class is only 50 mins. You get a weekly assignment that will take you about and hour and a weekly quiz worth 4 points plus and extra credit. This class is easy but still fun learning, as long as you do the work you will pass. Highly recommend
Deaner has long powerpoints with a lot of text on them, so it can be difficult to take notes. there are weekly assignments that take up some time but they aren't difficult and they will really help your grade. there are only 2 exams and they are pretty tough because there is a lot of information but overall it's a pretty class
Great course if you are interested in psychology and animals! Reading the textbook is not necessary if you attend class. Printing the lecture slides ahead of time is best as he goes over a lot of information each class (too much to write)! The assignments are engaging and with only two exams, it's important to do well on them.
Deaner really cares about his students. He is more than willing to help. There is only a midterm and a final, and a research paper you do step by step that he gives you feedback on. He does a lot of mini pop quizzes but they're easy if you do the reading, and many of these are extra credit quizzes that boost your grade. I found the lectures boring.
Theres 2 multiple choice exams, 3 labs (he walks you through them), & your final paper. He gives extra credit quizzes at least once a weak and they really boost your grade (I went from a B- to an A- with them). He's also very clear on what he expects and gives very good feedback for your final paper. He just wants everyone to get an A so take him!!
He is a great professor but you have to go to him for extra help. Follow hus instructions for class and you'll do just fine.
I would recommend Deaner to anyone. He was very helpful in writing my research paper and broke it up into chunks so that it was easier to do. I am not a strong writer but Deaner gave me great feedback!
This class wasnt too hard but I wasnt comfortable talking to him. Hes the type of professor that makes you feel like a bother for asking questions or trying to get help. Still, try to do labs early so you can check it over during his office hours in case theres issues. You need the book, try to read the chapters ahead of time for the quizzes.
Prof Deaner is the most boring professor I've had. The lectures were not engaging or helpful; I felt like I had to teach myself the material. I'm an A student and still did well, the content isn't bad. He does give good feedback and makes his expectations for the class clear, but he turned an interesting subject into the most boring hour of my day.
Professor Deaner cares about his students success, but his grading is unnecessarily hard and its discouraging. Even he exams are pretty difficult even if you study a lot. I wish he realized that this course is a pre-req and most people are just trying to pass
I really like Professor Deaner. You will have to try and put in time to get an A. He was accessible out side of class time and even outside of his office hours if you needed to meet (this was online due to COVID). He gives good feedback and you have the whole semester for the research paper. His exams not too bad if you understand the material.
Nice guy decent prof. Lectures are long and boring which sucks because thats practically the whole class. Extra credit quizzes every week. Tests were very hard and hes not hesitant to tell you that either. If you take his class make sure you take very good notes in his lectures. Tests/quizzes are heavily lecture based.
He's a nice guy who cares. You can tell when someone is a good person not just in the classroom, but probably in real life too.
Dr. Deaner has mixed reviews, but I found his class to be interesting and enjoyable. Any 6 week course will contain a lot of info but he made it manageable and offered ample extra credit quizzes. If you read the chapters, review his powerpoint slides, and take all extra credit quizzes then the class with be a breeze! He's a nice guy too!
Deaner was a great prof for 300. He made research so much easier than I expected. He genuinely cares about students and is passionate about teaching. I took his class online so I can't speak for any in person content, but I thought he was engaging and encouraging. Just stay on pace with the research project and ask questions! He's very kind
Dr. Deaner is a really awesome guy. Always willing to meet with you if you need extra help or have any questions! Don't let the research project get away from you, the final deadline will sneak up on you. There are weekly extra credit quizzes that helped with comprehension a lot.
Dr. Deaner is a cool dude. He makes it clear the class is hard, but he tries his best to teach the material. There's a semester-long research project, but Deaner will help you a lot with it. There's a lot of information and could make the class difficult to understand (for me it did), but I never felt like Deaner was effective with his teaching.
Seems like a friendly guy, just doesn't teach well. He expects more effort than needed. He requires a research paper but did not give us the survey info until halfway through, so it was harder to get it started. He also told me that my research paper topic wasn't good enough when I picked it from a list he provided and said we could pick from it.
Overall, he is a really good professor for this class. You work on one research paper thoughout the semester, and he gives you good feedback and is available for help. Attendance is only mandatory for exams and 3 peer review sessions. You get to know your classmates and have fun due to icebreaker questions, but sometimes that took up too much time.
The class is fine and Dr Deaner does a decent job. The flipped classroom can cause it to be overwhelming at times especially when lectures are lengthy. Felt like I had to put in way more work to understand the material. He tried to make the class as fun as possible, show up, it'll help. Didn't love the class but definitely not bad.
Loved him. Favorite professor ever. wrote me a letter of rec. Great guy. I worked my butt off in his class said bye and hi to him everyday and it paid off. He invited me to meet his family with some other students. He was my fav professor i ever had in my undergrad. You still need to put the work in but he's awesome.
Prof Deaner is a nice guy but made things way more complicated than they had to be. He has a flipped classroom so you basically watch lecture videos. This setup does not make sense for such an important class and then he wonders why everyone fails his exams. The research project is kinda confusing but just ask for clarification.
I was excited about this course but he is one of those professors who are like "I don't give out 10/10s because something could always be improved". The lectures are lengthy, both talking and PowerPoint slides but he does post everything on Blackboard. Some topics should be VERY sensitive but he doesn't really care. No exam reviews on any exams.
Didn't seem like a bad buy at first but got worse as the semester went on. He talked to the class (whoever bothered to show up) about how horrible tests and assignments went, but then never bothered to really go into depth about anything that we did wrong. He was pretty critiquing about assignments which can be helpful, but more felt insulting.
I don't know how Deaner has so many high ratings, but as of recently he definitely doesn't match up to the positive reviews on here. He was condescending to students many times, lectures weren't very helpful at all, exams were difficult and the "exam reviews" he gave only helped slightly (which were in class and if you missed it, oh well).
so condescending in class and in his emails, exams are hard- he was rude because i missed an exam as well (for some weird reason???) i wouldn't take him. especially not for an SWS/class you need to graduate. also, the forced participation wasn't fun, and the exam reviews weren't reviews, just answer keys.
I liked prof deaner. He is passionate about the subject, and is willing to help if needed. However, he is more helpful when you attend class and participate. You work on a research proposal in small steps through the entirety of the semester, and he is willing to help and gives a lot of feedback before the final submission.
I thought he was amazing! Very helpful and explains all the content thoroughly and is easily approachable if you have questions. As long as you show up and pay attention and study you will be fine
Dr. Deaner was great! He gives very informative lessons, but if you do not attend, than you are essentially left in the dust (which is to be expected when being graded for attendance). Lots of chances for extra credit, minimal homework, but if you attend class, you should be fine. Definitely a heavy workload though at times.
I love his class. If you are not willing to speak up or are introverted do not take this class. I think he is one of my favorite professors I've had. He cares a lot and most of the class is talking and listening to people's points of view. I enjoy it a lot.
Prof Deaner runs a challenging class, but engaging with the flipped classroom setup and using study aids like Unstuck study can really help. Attend class, read the textbook, and put in the work - you'll learn a lot.
So awesome
I loved Dr. Deaner! He is so funny and enjoys getting to know his students. He also offers extra credit quizzes, and they help your grade a lot. Definitely take him if you are willing to speak in class, if not I would recommend taking it with a different professor, he also has a phone policy so if that is a deal breaker I would take someone else.
Really great professor. The class discussions are really engaging. Lots of reading. Plenty of extra credit quizzes. Attendance is required so attend regularly but you should anyways.
Professor Deaner is an amazing professor, I feel like I actually learned in his class, I enjoyed our lectures and discussions, however his exams are quite difficult and VERY specific, he did end up curving and there was extra credit that helped.
