He shares the experiences that he's had that are relevant to what the course covers. Very knowledgeable and clear on each subject. I enjoyed his class very much. Review notes from class and textbook.
Deluty presents the material very clearly and specifies which sections of the chapters you will be tested on. Tests are straight forward and include those topics emphasized in the readings and in class. The class is interesting and should be easy if you do the work.

Very animated teaching style, so lectures are usually not boring. Exams does require that you do the readings and take good notes in class to get a good grade. Highly recommend this course.
THIS MAN TOOK CLASS TIME TO READ US HIS POETRY. that's all that needs to be said.
Great professor, very clear. Go to class, take notes and read, and you'll do fine.
A very good professor, those interested in pursuing psych careers will learn a lot in this class. He covers not only the discipline, but also information about graduate programs. Class is comprised of 4 tests, which cover lectures and textbook, though minimal questions means that getting a few wrong will cost you. One of my favorite professors.
A gifted teacher!!! I love Dr. Deluty!
Terrific course! Dr. Deluty is the best professor I've had at UMBC. His lectures are very clear and extremely informative. I learned a huge amount about clinical assessment and therapy. Dr. Deluty is unbelievably smart, patient, and kind. He connects easily with students and he never uses notes! No one should leave UMBC without taking this course.
This is a first-rate course taught by a world-class professor. I learned a great deal not only about clinical psychology, but also about myself. Deluty cares deeply about the learning and growth of each student in his class. His articles and poetry are amazing, and his lectures are insightful and inspiring. He's made a big difference in my life.
Great professor. Great course.
I graduated UMBC 1 yr ago. Looking back, I'd say Deluty's course was my favorite (and I was a Bio major!). Deluty's uber-intelligent, very funny, tremendous lecturer and writer. BTW: The only negative evals Deluty has on RMP are for 407 and 600, courses he has NOT taught! Trust my ratings!!!
Love the man, loved the class!! Prof. Deluty knows Clinical psychology inside and out. He also knows poetry, religions, history, movies, music, television, and just about everything else. Very approachable, very helpful, and answers e-mails very quickly. He's a new Grandpa, but he's still cute!!
Excellent prof, extremely smart but isn't arrogant. Really nice and funny. Wants everyone in class to do well. If you come to class, pay attention, keep up with the readings, and ask ?s when you don't understand, you'll do fine.
Absolutely amazing man. Deluty thinks at the speed of light & writes articles, essays & poetry faster than I can read. His lectures on intelligence & IQ testing, Psychoanalysis, Gestalt & Cognitive Therapies were brilliant, memorable. I wish he'd stop being a Dean and teach 3 courses every semester (including summer).
Dr. Deluty is an excellent teacher and a very nice man. He really cares about his students. I learned a great deal in his course and I really enjoyed the lectures and class discussions. His exams were very fair -- if you work hard, you'll do well. I really liked his presentation of clinical cases. I highly recommend this course and Dr. Deluty.
Tremendous teacher and role model for students who are interested in being both scientists and practitioners. Draws on his vast clinical experience and knowledge of the field to make the course fascinating and enjoyable. Very respectful and very responsive to questions in class and over email. Passionate about the profession. Great speaking voice.
I give the course an A and Deluty an A+. He's a real professional - always came early to class, always well-prepared, and always responded very fast to emails. My only criticism: He's way too kind to rude and clueless students.
Brilliant guy and a master teacher. You'll learn a ton about interviewing, psych testing, and different therapies. My favorite psych class at UMBC.
I took PSYC 620 and PSYC 622 with Robert Deluty a few years ago, but I only learned of RMP last week. Dr. Deluty is an extraordinary teacher, clinician, scholar, mentor, editor, writer, and poet. His influence on my growth as a practitioner, researcher, and writer has been enormous. I am deeply grateful to him. Take ANY class he offers!
EXCELLENT teacher and advisor!
Dr. Deluty is an excellent professor! I highly recommend taking his class. If you work hard, you will succeed in his class. If you have a passion for psychology, you will gain a great deal of knowledge from Dr. Deluty.
Definitely the most interesting psychology course I've taken at UMBC. Professor Deluty is a very talented teacher and a real gentleman.
Tremendous teacher, wonderful writer, inspiring man. Dr. Deluty gives it his all and expects his students to do the same. He brings great wisdom, caring, integrity, and energy to every class.
Phenomenal teacher, wonderful course. The best class I've taken here (and at my two previous colleges). Deluty knows the subject matter inside and out and conveys it beautifully.
Truly excellent man. His lectures are perfectly clear and enjoys interacting with students. He is passionate about clinical psychology and is willing to help anyone. I really like how respectful he is to anyone who has insight to offer in class discussions, even if it is flat-out wrong. A must-take if you are a psychology major.
Prof. Deluty is simply the best. Always early to class, always well-prepared, always crystal clear, always eager to help, always super-informative, always kind and respectful. I learned a huge amount in his course and I really enjoyed the experience.
Deluty is superb!!! You'll learn about the DSM, IQ tests, the Rorschach, TAT, and MMPI, clinical and actuarial prediction, Freud, Rank, Rogers, Sullivan, Wolpe, Perls, Beck, Ellis, Meichenbaum, Minuchin, AND the Marx Brothers, the dialectic, and haiku/senryu poetry. A memorable course!
Dr. Deluty is a great teacher and an even better human being. He really wants students to learn and get the most out of their college education. I wish all faculty cared as much about their students as he does. Don't leave UMBC without taking at least one of Dr. D's courses!
Awesome Professor. If I was a movie reviewer, Id give the course and the prof 5 out of 5 stars.
Professor Deluty's terrific reviews on this site are absolutely accurate: he really is great. We should have given him a standing O when the class ended. He truly deserved it.
Exceptional in every way! Dr. Deluty is a wonderful teacher. My favorite part of the course is when he shows films of psychologists conducting therapy. He describes/analyzes what is going on, what he likes and does not like, and why. He is amazingly knowledgeable not only about clinical psychology but also about literature, movies, history, etc.
Awesome teacher, he truly caraes about the material and what you think. He can be tough and overbearingly interactive, but he makes it hard for you NOT to succeed. Go to lecture, do the readings, and ask questions and your should definately recieve no lower than a B! Great course to take.
The good Doctor has a gigantic brain and a heart to match! I learned a ton in his class about psychological testing, interviewing, and different psychotherapies. Dr. Deluty is a master lecturer who presents everything very clearly and in an entertaining way (even reliability and validity!). I highly recommend the man and the course!
Tremendous professor, fascinating class
An excellent course taught by an amazing professor, dean, clinician, scientist, poet, essayist, scholar, comedian, and movie buff (all in one!). Don't leave UMBC without taking this course.
Entertaining. Brilliant.
It was a real privilege working with Dr Deluty in the 397 "Research Experience". He is a great teacher and mentor. He helped me to think and write much more clearly. He is very easy to relate to and is super generous with his time and knowledge.
A generous, gentle, genial genius!
Deluty is a complete professional. He always 1. arrives early to class, 2. is very well prepared and super informative and helpful w/ all questions, 3. answers emails unbelievably quickly, and 4. is kind to students even if their questions are dumb or off the wall. The course is not easy, you have to work very hard to get an A. Well worth it!!!
He is good but the class is tough.
The best psychology professor I have had here or at my prior schools. Deluty gives it his all each and every class. He has a huge amount of knowledge and passion for the field. He truly wants every student to get the most out of college. He is a terrific role model.
dr deluty has been teaching for many years - apparently, practice makes perfect
I LOVED going to lecture. He is entertaining and incredibly knowledgeable about the field and various other areas.I have a passion for PSYC and learned so much from this class, though my grade doesn't reflect it. He purposely tries to trick students on tests which was frustrating. Couldn't get higher than 79 on any exam no matter how hard I studied
Prof. Deluty is an extraordinary clinical psychologist and teacher. His very wise advice and sensitive support helped make my clinical experiences during my Internship very rewarding. He is unbelievably smart and kind and he was great in helping me reduce my stress. I can't say enough good things about him. He is the best!
Superb course. Mega-excellent professor.
Terrific class. Deluty is an old pro with the energy and enthusiasm of a 20 yr old. Loved the course...and Deluty!
My hospital internship was a great experience and Dr. Deluty's supervision really helped to make it so. He is a wonderful clinician and teacher and his expert recommendations, kindness, humor, and confidence in me made a huge difference.
if every professor taught as well, worked as hard and cared as much about his/her students as dr. deluty does, then umbc would be the best university on the planet
Phenomenal course. Dr.Deluty is an amazing lecturer. Passionate, brilliant, and funny. The course is definitely not an easy A. You have to work really hard to ace it. Exams are tough but fair. I learned a ton.
I'm a senior psyc major. I'd rank this my top psyc course and Deluty my favorite prof. I loved his presentation and analysis of the different therapies (partic. Gestalt and CBT). I wish he'd teach a 400-level seminar in clinical psyc. He's a master lecturer and an inspiring guy.
Deluty teaches great. He is a very kind and good man and he really knows his stuff. He speaks very clearly, he tells great stories, and he has a nice sense of humor. Be Sure To Take This Course!
The BEST - both the course and the professor. The course is challenging - but, after all, this IS a university. Prof. Deluty is an amazing lecturer. He is hugely informative and entertaining at the same time. And he speaks to the class - he doesn't use notes. I also saw him during office hours and he gave me great advice regarding grad schools.
Prof Deluty is ultra intelligent and extremely generous w/ his time and knowledge. The course is excellent but not a walk in the park. Some of the material like test validity I found pretty difficult. You'll learn about IQ and personality tests, interviewing and different therapies like psychoanalysis, cognitive-behavioral and couples & family.
Intro to clinical is an incredible class, but very challenging. Make sure you go to class and read the assigned readings carefully. When you're taking the tests, read each question at least twice. Dr. Deluty is very nice (especially outside of class), and will teach you a lot of things that are worth knowing. Everyone should take a class with him.
One of the wisest human beings I have ever met. And one of the nicest.
Phenomenal teacher and writer. Check out his books in the Bookstore.
Deluty's a really excellent teacher and his exams are fair but tough. He expects you to work very hard and to speak and write clearly. He'll challenge you if you don't make sense or if you try to get away with drivel. If you don't come to class and don't take the course seriously, you won't do well. If you get an A in this class, you've earned it!
The amazing thing about Professor Deluty is that although he is unbelievably smart and extremely busy, he ALWAYS comes early to class, is completely prepared & organized, answers e-mails very fast, makes time to see you before or after class, and is kind, helpful and respectful. He never makes you feel that his time is more important than yours.
Brilliant, energetic, and charismatic professor with a wonderful sense of humor teaching fascinating material equals a GREAT experience!
Deluty is a fantastic speaker. He should give lectures to faculty on how to give lectures to students. He really knows the material and presents it with a great blend of theory, research, clinical cases, personal experience. I love his sense of humor and perspective
Best course I've taken in college. Best teacher I've had since 5th grade. Favorite part of the course was when Deluty showed films of famous clinicians doing therapy. He didn't just show the films. He dissected what the patients & therapists were doing, pointing out where & what he thought the therapists were doing right & wrong. TAKE THIS COURSE!
Prof. Deluty is a tremendous teacher in the classroom and a tremendous adviser [for courses, clinical experiences, the profession, graduate schools, books, careers, life] outside the classroom.
Deluty is like a very warm and kind encyclopedia. he knows clinical psych inside and out, but he also know tons about movies (especially comedies), plays, poetry, baseball, religions and much much more. he is also a wonderful storyteller - his memory is unbelievable. be sure to take this course or anything else he teaches before you leave umbc.
If you blow off this class, it will ruin your GPA. Deluty is a wonderful professor who deserves the utmost of respect. He shows up early, gives you in depth lectures and gives you exact pages to study. Go to class, read and take notes and an A is achievable. Most fascinating class I've ever taken, you will learn so much!
The course material - psych testing, interviewing, diagnosis, different therapies - is hugely interesting, even if you're not a Psych major. Deluty is in a class by himself as a teacher. He presents a great deal of material in entertaining and memorable ways. He's also tremendously helpful and generous with his time and knowledge outside of class.
Excellent educator. Engaging, erudite, entertaining, energetic, exceptional!
I took 620 and 622 with Dr. Deluty in my first year of graduate school; I am on track to get my Ph.D. next year. I just wanted to publicly acknowledge what a tremendous teacher, clinician, adviser, mentor, and role model Robert Deluty is. If you ever have the opportunity to take a course (any course) with him, be sure to take it. I owe him so much.
The prior rater should have also written Extraordinary. Dr Deluty was born to teach. This is a GREAT course.
What makes the course great are Deluty's lectures. He is ginormously smart and knowledgeable and funny (in a dry way). The textbook and suppl. readings are interesting and the tests are tough but fair. Take this course - you'll be very glad you did.
What Dr. J was to playing basketball, Dr D is to teaching psychology!!!
There are tons of smart people at UMBC but very few geniuses. Deluty is definitely one of them. He is unbelievably creative as a teacher, writer and poet. And he has a great ironic sense of humor. A lot of his senryu poems are like mini-jokes with great punchlines. I loved his lectures and really admire the way he thinks and writes about people.
A+ Professor and Course
He REALLY cares that students come to class, participate, keep up with the readings, ask questions, and give it their best. He thinks that a college ed is a great gift that shouldn't be wasted or taken for granted. He is super dedicated and a great lecturer. A real professional. I admire him very very much.
I'll admit, if you come to class you can really do well in this course. He makes it very clear during lecture what you're expected to learn, but he is RUDE! They say "no question is a dumb question", but he would probably disagree and it is obvious when he thinks a question is dumb. He's also very egotistical!
Great teacher and scholar. Amazing human being.
Attention UMBC Shoppers: In the PSYC aisle you'll find a wonderful course, Deluty's Intro to Clinical Psych. It's a terrific class, and Deluty's a terrific prof. It'd be a bargain at twice the price. Hurry, register for it while supplies - and seats - last! Believe me, you'll be very happy with your selection.
Dr Deluty has been teaching for over 30 years, but in class he has the energy of a teenager. He is a fantastic lecturer, great storyteller, challenging tester, and a very kind, supportive man. If you are looking for an easy A, avoid this class. If you are looking to learn a ton about Clinical Psychology (and about yourself), TAKE THIS COURSE!

I took Abnormal Psych with Dr. Deluty a few semesters ago. At the time I was going thru some terrible emotional personal and family problems. Dr. Deluty was unbelievably supportive and helpful and made a huge difference in my getting thru the semester without falling apart. He is both a FANTASTIC teacher and a WONDERFUL caring gentleman. Love him!
The Best. The course covers interviewing, clinical psych testing (WISC/WAIS, MMPI, BDI, naturalistic behavioral observations, role-play analogs, projective tests, etc.), and different psychotherapies and behavioral therapies. The lecture topics and readings are fascinating and Prof. Deluty is a master teacher.
The most surprising thing about Dr. Deluty is that although he's ultra smart and super busy doing Dean stuff, writing a book every few months, advising, supervising students, etc, etc, he's always early and well prepared for EVERY class, always responds to emails very fast, and always makes time to see you if you have a problem or need some advice.
I love how Deluty thinks, speaks, writes & lectures; and the way he treats students inside and outside the classroom.
What Robert DeNiro is to acting, Robert Deluty is to teaching and advising. He should get a UMBC Oscar!
definitely truly absolutely EXCELLENT
As terrific as he is lecturing in class, he's even better in his office talking about clinical psych and therapists, graduate schools, professors, parents and children, marriage and inlaws, movies, TV, writing poetry and everything else. Great guy.
PSY 285 = Abnormal Psychology. Abnormal = uncommon. Dr. Deluty is really uncommon. He is hugely intelligent, presents interesting and important material super clearly, and is always available to help you if you have academic or personal problems. He's a great role model for students who want to do research, teach, write, and do clinical work.
Thanksgiving's just around the corner so here's a huge Thank You to Dr. Deluty for being a wonderful supervisor, teacher, writer & clinician!
He knows the field inside and out, and he knows how to present even difficult material in very clear and entertaining ways. He's also a deeply good and kind man. He's UMBC at its best.
As a teacher: Tremendous. As a person: Even Better. Whether you're a Psychology major or not, you should take any and every course Deluty teaches. He gives it his all, always.
Most pompous, arrogant professor. Wasn't clear, wasn't helpful and I had to drop the class because it was so awful. Puts his own poetry(loosely about therapy) on his exams and spends class time promoting his writing. Came to class to learn, not be peddled a poetry book.
The course and professor are completely superb!! You'll learn tons about interviewing, psychological testing (intellectual, personality), and a wide array of therapies (analytic, humanistic, cognitive, behavioral, etc.). Dr. Deluty is a fantastic educator and a phenomenal clinical psychologist. I wish that I could see him for therapy!!
Sigmund Freud taught Anna Freud taught Joseph Masling taught Dr. Deluty taught me! It is amazing and feels great to be part of such a clinical & academic lineage. I feel so happy and especially privileged to be mentored by Dr. Deluty!
Really rare: a brilliant prof/dean who's extremely kind and helpful AND (most important) really knows how to teach. I wish he'd offer a writing intensive Psyc course at the 400 level. I'd be the first one to sign up for it.
Easy A? No. Dumbed-down tests? No. Worthless class discussions? No. Supremely interesting topics (like how to treat anxiety, depression, poor social skills, children's non-compliance, marital problems)? YES! An absolutely awesome teacher? YES!
VERY impressive as a teacher, a therapist, an adviser (concerning grad schools, careers in health professions), and as a human being. He's got a great combination of intelligence, humor and kindness.
if you take Deluty's course you'll not only learn a lot about clinical psych research, assessment, testing and therapy - you'll also learn very important life lessons about intelligence, perfectionism, fears, parent-child relationships, depression, thinking irrationally, and much much more - you should definitely take this course
I totally love the way Dr Deluty teaches. He is hugely 1. knowledgeable, 2. patient, 3. understandable, 4. kind, 5. helpful, & 6. respectful of students.
When I think about Deluty I think of the word PRO. He is both a terrific Professor and a complete Professional. He is always early to class, always well prepared, always responsive to calls or emails, & always happy to help with class material, additional readings, internship suggestions, or grad school or career advice.
Wonderful teacher, wonderful course. Dr. Deluty deserves a big BRAVO!
Because of snow/ice, the last pre-final class of the semester had to be cancelled. Professor Deluty had make-up sessions on each of the next 3 days so that as many students as possible would get his last lecture (which was great), the final exam prep, fill out course evaluations, etc. That just about says it all!
The reading aren't easy and the exams are definitely challenging. However, Deluty is a phenomenal lecturer and he's always kind and eager to help you. And the course material is very interesting. Highly, highly recommended.
I was very privileged to take this course (as well as PSYC 620) with Dr. Deluty several years ago. It gives me a great deal of pleasure that so many undergraduates think as highly of Robert Deluty as I do. He is a wonderfully gifted teacher, clinician, and writer, and also a very generous, witty, and sensitive human (humane) being.
In what other course are you going to learn about the DSM-5, construct validity, the WISC, WAIS, Rorschach, TAT, MMPI-2, psychoanalysis, Gestalt therapy, cognitive/ behavioral therapies, Freud, Rogers, Perls, Ellis, Beck, Minuchin, Frankl, Rank, Wolpe AND Groucho Marx, Senor Wences, and Albert Schweitzer?? I loved this course and Prof. Deluty!
Approachable Brilliant Considerate Dedicated Exceptional Funny Gentlemanly Helpful Inspiring Judicious Kind Learned Marvelous
TREMENDOUS COURSE, WITH A PROFESSOR TO MATCH!!!
Deluty's not the flashiest. He's certainly not the easiest. He's simply the Best.
Very interesting class! One of the best professors I've had at UMBC. He has a lot of experience, so he really knows what he's talking about and has nice stories. Extremely knowledgeable and expects you to be on time. Does NOT like people to straggle in to class. He tells you exact sections to read from the book for the exam.
Dr D is a great teacher, a great writer & a great person. I love the way he speaks, his sense of humor, and the way he connects topics in psychology with poetry, history, mythology, fine arts, movies & television, etc.
Dr. Deluty is unbelievably smart but he's also really helpful, patient and kind. Go see him during his office hours - He'll help you with coursework and also give you excellent advise about the Psych major, Grad Schools, important books to read, therapists, and lots of other things.
You know what Peyton Manning is like on the football field? or what LeBron James is like on the basketball court? That's what Dr. Deluty is like in the classroom. He's at the top of his game and he makes it look effortless. Take his course and see for yourself.
ultra-smart, mega-gifted clinical psychologist + super-kind, helpful, encouraging man. love him!!!
When he supervised my Internship Dr. Deluty said that to be a first rate therapist you have to be very knowledgeable, skilled, sensitive, flexible, creative, empathic. He is ALL of those! He is a wonderful teacher/adviser/therapist.
Fascinating topics and a 1 of a kind professor! But if you're looking for an easy A you need to look someplace else. To do well you need to keep up with the readings, ask questions when you're not sure, and most definitely come to every class. Relying on somebody else's notes isn't good enough. You have to be there. It's definitely worth it!
i LOVED this course. i LOVED this professor. i wish he'd teach something at the 400 level.
Be prepared to work very hard, and if you do, you will learn a ton and you'll have a excellent and enjoyable experience.
Dr. Deluty is a fantastic teacher and advisor and unbelievably helpful in applying and interviewing for graduate schools in Clinical Psychology (both PhD and PsyD). He's extremely generous with his time and knowledge (which is huge).
I took Abnormal Psyc with Prof. Deluty about 20 years ago. It was my favorite course. I still remember his lectures on anxiety and depression, and on how we often make ourselves miserable by thinking irrationally. I'm happy that he's still teaching undergrads though he's now a dean. I hope he keeps teaching Abnormal & Clinical Psyc for many years!
Across the board - as a person, professor, scientist, clinician, writer, academic adviser, clinical supervisor, role model - A Legit Class Act. Some of the best discussions I've ever had with anyone I've had with Dr. Deluty.
Deluty is the most intuitive professor I know. He can have an answer to your question before you've completed it. He loves his career and is a person who, because of Psychology, understands that students experience challenges. Ask and ye shall receive; he wants his students to do well so if you need help, talk to him. Deluty is one of UMBC's gems.
Dr. Deluty is a totally great role model for students who want to be both scientists AND practitioners in clinical psychology. This course is an absolute MUST for anyone interested in pursuing a career in clinical psych, but I also strongly recommend it for people who are interested in social work, psychiatry, or any other mental health field.
Dr. Deluty is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is passionate, cares about students, and is incredibly knowledgeable about the field of psychology. If you have the opportunity to take this class with him, do not pass it up!
Deluty is as kind as he is smart. And he is very very very smart! This is a great course!
Let's cut to the chase: This is a GREAT course taught by a GREAT professor. Deluty is a brilliant man who really cares that his students learn. Expect to work hard; If you do, you'll have a tremendous experience
Dr Deluty is a superb lecturer and is always happy to help if you don't understand something. The course material is fascinating (but challenging) and the exams are hard (but fair). Go see him during office hours for advice on everything from grad schools in psychology to writing poetry. He is hugely knowledgeable and very nice.
Deluty's a very rare Univ. professor. He probably has an IQ over 200 & has written more than 40 books but yet he's modest, down to earth, & very respectful & helpful to students. The course demands you work hard - you need to come to class, pay close attention, ask questions & keep up with the readings. If you get an A, you really earned it.
I absolutely love the way Dr. Deluty thinks, speaks, writes, and supports students. He is a phenomenal teacher, mentor, and clinical psychologist. His knowledge, sensitivity, and passion to help students get the best education possible are tremendous. He's a truly awesome man.
The perfect combination: Fascinating course material (clinical interviewing, psychological tests, therapies for anxiety, depression, personality disorders, etc.) + a MASTER lecturer and clinical psychologist. Dr. Deluty ought to teach teachers how to teach.
Hugely fine lecturer. Knows clinical psych inside and out. Extremely clear and respectful. Unbelievably organized and professional. Super nice. Love him!
Dr. Deluty is one of the best psychology teachers I've ever had. The class by itself was already on a topic of interest for me but Dr. Deluty helped me start to clarify and understand what I wanted to do with psychology after my undergraduate education. Dr. Deluty's class is not only one psychology students should take, but everyone at UMBC.
The Ali of psychology professors: The Greatest! Knows the field completely and is super gifted in conveying it. Really cares about his students (the strong ones AND the struggling ones). I wish he'd teach a writing intensive seminar: I'd sign up immediately.
Prof. Deluty's a FANTASTIC teacher. His lectures on intelligence and IQ testing were the BEST lectures I've listened to in ANY course I've taken at UMBC and UMCP. Brilliant. Memorable.
If you want great lectures, come to class. If you want great advice on courses, careers, life, etc., come to his office. The best.
The course is wonderful, and so is Dr. Deluty!!!
Hard to believe he's a grandfather given his energy level, memory, and mental quickness. Unbelievably smart and organized. Doesn't waste a minute in class. Doesn't use notes because he knows the material so well. He doesn't like laziness or lateness or rudeness. He really respects students and really cares about us. He wants us to succeed.
Prof Deluty's the best lecturer I've had in my 4 years at UMBC. He knows the field like the back of his hand. He's very kind, patient and helpful to students. He's both a great scholar and a great storyteller. He's one of the most impressive people I've ever met.
Epic Prof! Get ready to be challenged & to work real hard.
Dr. Deluty is an absolutely extraordinary teacher. I'm not a morning person, but I never missed one of his 8:30 am classes. He has so much to offer students - tons of information about Clinical psych (interviewing, assessment methods, psychotherapies) + many valuable life lessons. He's probably the best lecturer I've ever had. Take this course!!!
Truly tremendous as a professor, clinical psychologist, classroom teacher, mentor, researcher, adviser, writer, poet and human being! Take this course or any course he teaches!
Anyone who doesn't think Dr. Deluty is great should see a top notch clinical psychologist. I recommend that they go see Dr. Deluty!
Don't take this course if all you want is to sleep, laugh or breeze thru a course to an easy A. But DO take this course if you want to learn a huge amount about clinical psych assessment and therapies - and about yourself.
Deluty's hugely smart and extremely kind, respectful and helpful to students. I love his teaching style.
No doubt about it - Dr. Deluty is an extraordinary classroom teacher. He's also very helpful during office hours and if you send him emails. But the course is tough. You need to master the lecture material and readings in order to get an A. You cannot boost your grade by doing Mickey Mouse extra credit work or by talking a lot in class.
Professor Deluty is a great psychotherapist and a great teacher. But even more important, he is a great person. Brilliant and a real gentleman.
His class is not that difficult but your grade consists of only 4 exams. He's extremely rude, he rolls his eyes at students, talks down to you if your wrong but then gets mad if no one wants to answer a question. He is very intelligent and if you try you can do well but you just have to be willing to deal with sass. Also, don't be late.
When I took this course, I was ill & in a family crisis. Dr Deluty was unbelievably kind & helpful & flexible. He let me take the exams around my drs.' appts. He also met with me in his office & gave me great tutoring on class material & advice with my family stuff. I learned a ton & got a B! Dr Deluty saved my semester & probably saved my career!
You absolutely MUST take this course if you're interested in being a clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, counselor or any other mental health professional. Course material is fascinating and is relevant both professionally and in your day-to-day life (such as how to manage anxiety and depression). Deluty is truly a master teacher.
Dr. Deluty is a world class teacher and therapist at the top of his game. I learned a great deal about assessment methods (personality and intelligence tests, interviews, observation techniques) and therapies (psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitivebehavioral) for individuals, couples, and families.
Love the way he teaches, writes, gives advice, knows the field, tells stories and cares about students.
Dr. Deluty has a colossal amount of knowledge and kindness. He is a very superior lecturer with tons of clinical experience. Nice sense of humor too!
The BEST lecturer I've ever had the pleasure of listening to! Dr. Deluty is unbelievably smart, organized and student-friendly, and his lectures are super clear and thought-provoking. Take the course - you'll be very grateful you did
This was the hardest class ive ever taken!!! He words things on the test to purposely trick with using little words! I cried tears of joy when I passed because i was terrified i would fail!
If you're looking for an easy class, you'll need to go elsewhere. If you're looking for a great class, you've come to the right place and the right teacher. Dr. Deluty is a fantastic professor and great role model as a scientistpractitioner.
I loved having Prof. Deluty as my supervisor for my internship! Our discussions were always very helpful and he made me feel very respected and supported. He's a phenomenal teacher and therapist!
Tremendous teacher. Awesome advisor. Wonderful writer. Genuine gentleman.
Deluty is as gifted a lecturer as he is a writer. And he is a great writer!
Dr. Deluty is an awesome teacher. His class was just him lecturing, no powerpoint or anything like that. Make sure to read and go to class because your entire grade will consist of 4 exams. The exams are tough, but if you take good notes, read and pay attention, you'll do fine. I learned so much in this class. I would recommend to psyc major!
Deluty is uniquely excellent! His lectures are exceptional and he is unbelievably helpful and caring that students get the most out of his course and out of their college experience. He responds to emails super fast and he's always willing to meet you in his office to answer questions and give advice about the major, grad schools, therapies, etc.
In a class by himself as a teacher and lecturer. This is a terrific course taught by a terrific person.
Dr. Deluty deserves the great reputation he has. His course should be required for every psychology major. Wait, on second thought, it should be required for all students who plan to work in a mental or physical health field. If UMBC creates a Hall of Fame for professors, Dr. Deluty should be inducted first.
Deluty's a tremendous lecturer, and you will learn tons about assessment measures (everything from interviews to projectives to IQ tests to behavioral checklists) and therapies (everything from psychoanalysis to Gestalt therapy to behavior modification to cognitive restructuring). You need to come to every class and study very hard to get an A.
Ultra Fine Professor, Writer & Clinical Psychologist!! Best part of the course: the lectures, demonstration & discussion of cognitive-behavioral therapies. Best reading of the course: Deluty's article on psychotherapy and poetry. Definitely take this course before you leave UMBC!
Love the way Dr. Deluty teaches, the way he writes, the advice he gives, his sense of humor, and how fast he gets back to you when you email him. His lectures are really outstanding.
This is an absolutely and truly excellent course. Prof Deluty brings a huge amount of knowledge and experience to each lecture. Its clear that he loves teaching and really wants students to understand and appreciate the course material. I enjoy his sense of humor and how he weaves into his lectures ideas and information from different fields,.
In just the last 3 classes, I've learned about Freudian analysis, transference, client-centered therapy, Gestalt therapy, existential therapy, the dialectic, senryu poetry, and how to juggle. Fantastic course and prof.
Favorite course I've taken at UMBC. You will learn so much about clinical psych and about yourself. Dr. Deluty has a huge amount to offer so if you come to class and work hard, it'll be a great experience.
One of a kind professor and course. Life changing!!
Exceptionally excellent in every way, both the course and Prof. Deluty. If you plan to go to graduate school in clinical or counseling psychology, social work, PT or OT, or medical school for psychiatry you must take this course.
I have huge respect and admiration for Dr. Deluty as a professor, teacher, clinician and mentor. He is a great role model for someone trying to balance academics, clinical service (psych assessment & therapy) and scholarship with a family life.
The course material is fascinating and Deluty teaches it beautifully. He's a phenomenal lecturer. Deserves an A plus!
The best professor giving the best lectures on the best topics! Loved Deluty and the course!
