Lectures are boring, and the tests kick your ass. Avoid if possible.
Good teacher, but you HAVE to read the book--no way around it!!
read the book, extremely boring don't take him in the morning
Pretty funny guy but very confusing. Be prepared to read book.
He's a good teacher. This is college people- you are supposed to read the books
Very interesting lectures, be prepared to read, great teacher!
Lectures are difficult to follow. and test kick your a$$...I wouldn't take him
for all that is good and holy do not take him
Very hard to follow in class, HARD tests
HOPE YOU LIKE TO READ, knows his stuff. One of the hardest gen. eds. I've had
Don't be "alarmed" about the "opportunities" Just do the reading
be prepared to skip this boring class..a lot!
We won't be alarmed by this... but it's the hardest class ever, take anyone else

A's is possible, hes not understanding. VERY typical,
Very hard teacher. Read read and read some more.
it is gov after all...
Test material is half from book and half from lecture. Dry sense of humor.
STOP WITH THE PUNS ALL READY
Really knows his stuff, I only read the night before tests and got a B.
smart, experienced, and nice. very punny man.
Class is boring, Humor is horrible. but overall not a hard class
read night before=B. knows his stuff...dont be alarmed by that :)
What A Stud
PUNS PUNS AND MORE PUNS--Groupthink in Pres, is a JOKE!!!
Decent teacher, but I wish he would explain his grades further than a number scrawled on a piece of paper. God.
Very boring. The usual liberal garbage that you hear from a liberal.
What a stud. Humorous and such. Wish I could have every class with the dude. Essay tests are so easy.
Makes jokes about himself and politics while teaching quite well. Jokes are pathetic I must say, but there's a good one in every blue moon so pay attention. Can I say I really blew this one up? Nevermind. Maybe he should grow up.
good guy, knows his stuff, and dare I say when he teaches about the judiciary branch it is quite appealing
I took him in summer school. He was always willing to help us. Has some dry humor, but the facts that I learned about our government will really come in handy especially in the upcoming election so I can pay more attention and make an informed decision.
Gotta love those puns! He really makes me interested in the government. I used to HATE politivs and now I like it. Dewhirst is a very smart man and can explain things on a gen ed level. I suggest taking him if you want to learn :)
His humor is very dry, but he tries hard. He's a great guy and he explains things very well. If you need help with papers or what not, you can go to him and he will help you. His tests are kinda hard...you better read the text! I suggest taking him! :-)
Pretty good teacher, you will have to study though. Make sure to read the book, and keep up on notes. He loves to make puns, and will favor those who ask questions.
Great teacher, but will make you work for your grades MUST read assigned chapters carefully ie ALL material on page, very punny but you will learn
Not a too bad class, but beware:he is very proud of puns, his favorite being when the alarm goes off when class is over, he ends every day by saying "we wont be alarmed by that" ha ha. gets a little old, but not too bad. good guy.
Boring class, but what can be expected. Provides plenty of funs, and will help you with your papers

good guy, good class...what more can be expected from a gen ed?
if you show up to all of the classes and read the book thoroughly i guess you would be ok but...otherwise his tests are 50% book and lecture, and 50% who knows where he got the stuff from..always ends with"and we wont be alarmed by that"haha
This guy is GREAT, he is sweet, caring, and knows his stuff. Don't take ANYONE ELSE for poli sci. I miss this class now that its over, and most of all miss his HILARIOUS PUNS! Be sure to read your book!
Great teacher, a little disorganized in lecture, but always willing to clarify things. He is good! The puns get a little old though.
He is a very smart person, but he expects you to be as smart as him. His tests are very hard. You will get no breaks in essay or term paper writing. Focuses more on grammar than quality. He is the best to take in the department but that isn't saying much.
Beware of the puns! Otherwise, awesome guy... just be sure to read.
REALLY nice, funny guy. Horrible class, but he does what he can. Tries to make it interesting. God bless him. Tests are easier than they seem, term paper is no fun, but all in all a fairly easy B.
This class gives you a lot of information, but beware of the liberal slant of both Dr. Dewhirst and the books that he assigns. Sometimes you have to realize that there are other opinions besides those that are presented in class and in the readings. Good teacher, though.
His tests are literally half book half class. The lectures are VERY boring, and the SI did not seem to help. You have 3 tests and an essay test from a book you buy. One of the easier compared to other classes, but still not the best.
The worse professor I have had as of yet. He adds material to the class which is crazy. Your suppose to read 15 chapters in this book and you end up only end up using 3 of them in the exam. I drop the class cause I found it a abosolute waste of time. Boycot Dewhirst!!!!
It seems as if everyone that leaves bad posts on here say "he expected me to do a little bit of work." Grow up people! It wasn't that difficult. Show up, listen, take notes, and read a little bit. It's like teachers here in college expect us to work or something! Drop out if you can't even read!
His class is pretty easy. He gives everybody points on all the regular tests. He has for regular tests, an essay test on a $25 book you have to buy and a short paper over it too. Go to SI's and read the book and you'll do fine. He doesn't press dem or rep and is a Christian.
This is a great class. He loves to teach it, but his tests are hard. There is a lot of reading involved and hard to keep up. Plan on studying for long hours for his test, he grades hard.
He's a nice enough guy, but the lectures can get old- choose a MWF class, if you can, because they are only an hour. It's not too hard, if you take good notes. Beware of his puns, and he sticks to the same routine every class- he starts it and ends it in the same way everytime.
He is a nice man. Lectures the whole time which is kind of boring. I am in the night class so it sucks. Don't take the night class. If I take this class during the day I would of definitely taken it with him. He knows what he is talking about. Take him.
Very nice man. I would recommend his class. Fair grade and tests are fair.
Not a hard class, but as boring as possible...cant hardly sit through it, tests come strait from notes he gives, very liberal and doesnt care for conservatives
tough class, always wanted to put in his liberal opinions.
Stickler on paper formatting. Fairly interesting lectures; good stories about his old job as a journalist.
Brilliant, subtle humor would grace the classes that I would attend. Not necissarily the most clear professor but if you are smart and in the mood for some odd type of humor, take this man's courses. Democrat too.
The guy doesn't know how to use spellcheck. His tests are riddles with typos and errors. Tests are very unclear and the answers contradict each other.
It was government and politics. dewhirst sux!
Dewhirst should not be teaching. His tests were bad. He might as well have asked how many letters were in a chapter on his book questions. His liberal spin on everything made me want to puke. His grading is extremely difficult, especially if you had any conservativism in your writing!
Be in class, pay attention and do the reading... you'll be fine.
Dr. Dewhirst was one of the most CHALLENGING professors I had and that was a GOOD things-I learned SO much from him and worked so hard to make the grade I wanted. He's also very personable and a little kookie!
I really like this class despite his liberal views. He's a good guy who likes to discuss things in class and is very knowlegable about the presidency; he is writing a book on Eisenhower. Also, you can almost always move the test date with a class vote.
Too much useless information
This class is really intense during the summer! You have to buy and read almost an entire book (we only had a week) along with every chapter he assigns. I learned alot, but if you don't want to read don't take this class. Over half of his tests are textbook questions (I found them difficult)...it was a rough month.
Lecture evry class:then test:1 of tests over the reading:u hav 2 read whole book, then write 3 essays in 50minuets.it wasnt as scary as i thot it wood b.I didnt read the whole book&got a B. But I also have interests in the issues.Tests r mostly from lectures tho he says its over other book as well.there is 1,500word paper:the requirments r low&easy.
He only teaches half of what you have to know for the test. You MUST read the textbook to pass the tests. 25 test questions are from the book and 25 are from his lectures. It's a lot of info to have to remember. He's a pretty nice guy, though.
Media and Politics is an interesting class. Dewhirst is full of knowledge about media bias. Granted, he's not a very electrifying person, and there are out of class readings to do. But he's a VERY generous grader on the tests, all of which are essay. And you can, as a class, vote to delay the exam dates and your term paper deadline, which def helps
His classes are easy if you read the required readings and take notes over everything he says. He has essay tests so write as much as you can and study like you would for a graduate class for his tests.
Tests are ridiculous!!!!! Try and take the make-up tests if you are good at writing essays- he grades easier on the make-ups and on all the essays. Otherwise, try and take a differnet gvmt teacher!
Not such a bad class. i took it in the summer so it went by quickly.
Great teacher. Love him, because he is intelligent and extremely helpful. He wants you to succeed. Many people think he is a bit boring, but I think he is quite funny. If you ever need anything go visit him during office hours, and he's more than willing to help!
This may sounds like a hard class but Dewhirst knows what he is talking about and loves the subject. Tests are tricky but if you study and read you will be fine.
He is really a hard grader, no matter what you do it isn't good enough.
Very tough. I would not recommend to take Intro to American Government with him.
The class is hard as it is, but Dewhirst doesn't make it any easier. He lectures the whole time,so if you don't pay attention easily, do not take him, especially at 8 in the morning. He is not exciting, just talks the whole time with no handouts or anything. Hard grader also.
He is wonderful... I am speechless. I have my final tomorrow.. Dr. D is jut a wonderful person.... He has a lot of jokes and interesting stories. He thinks he is funny, but he is not - this makes him funny... I love him- Sometimes I could not stop laughing.... MY FAVORITE NORTHWEST PROFESSOR I LOVE HIMMM!
An extraordinarily pleasant individual. However, while clearly competent, I would rate him as the least knowledgeable and most tedious PolySci prof at NW. His lectures are typically dry, burdened with useless anecdotal material and only marginally pertaining to his exams. He requires the highest volume of textbook reading in the department.
Horrible teacher. All he does is lecture. I could barely stay awake in class because he was so boring and monotone. Tells same stupid jokes over and over again. Should be an easy class, but he makes it way tougher by putting things on the test that he doesn't even talk about and the book is worthless too. Pointless class, glad I"m done with it.
While I enjoyed the daily discourse that usually ensued within the news media and politics, what I did not enjoy was the overuse of liberal commentary and one sidedness of his arguments. The books that were required were all biased and did not show an "even-keel" point of view. Mr. Dewhirst himself is a wonderful person and fun to talk to.
This class is horrible. He's a horrible teacher. He makes jokes that aren't funny. He gets to talking so much you don't know what to write down and what's important for the tests. I feel like he just starts rambling to show his knowledge of the subject. That's great, but not for an introductory class. DON"T TAKE HIM. I've heard to take Wade.
He is nice but you want to fall asleep in his class.
He makes some jokes that are sometimes funny. He has 3 test over lectures. Tests are easy if you pay attention. tests are 50% book 50% lecture. He has 1 paper due. also he has 1 essay test. this will make or break your grade. It is very hard. make sure you read your book atleast 2 weeks ahead of time
One thing that's for certain about Dewhirst is that he LOVES what he teaches. He has a million, obviously rehearsed puns that he'll throw in during his lectures (that sometimes actually ARE funny) and the class is 100% completely lecture. Textbook reading is required for exams, plus an extra book for an essay test. Overall, I personally liked him.
Honestly Dewhirst isnt a bad guy ,but I would suggest you not take his class if you have a short attention span because you will fall asleep. He doesnt really trip off attendance because half my class missed alot of days. Some of his quotes are; any pundentries, perfect studying weather, sports fans, opportunity lol
I took this class in the summer and over all this is not a hard class if you go to class and pay attention, but if you are trying to get an A its going to be more difficult. I think he makes this class fun because he has a dry scene of humor. 3 test are multiple choice with 25 from notes and 25 from book, 1 test is essay. With one analysis paper.
Okay, well I'm a straight A student and this guy put my in my place. This is a tremendously hard class because it requires that you spend ridiculous amounts of time studying and he is a VERY particular guy when it comes to his essay test. I studied for a week straight and got a 51/100. He is the worst for this Gen. Ed., take someone else for it.
extremely liberal, instead of teaching his class he teaches his ideologies. Tests are graded by how he feels about your answer instead of how well you answered the question
The class is a very hard A. I studied for hours, read the book, studied the book, made note cards-- everything. Dewhirst tells you what he expects and grades fairly, always there for help. You just have to put forth effort and actually try.
He makes the same puns over and over again. Don't study your "lecture" notes. Read the book very carefully. Know your court cases, Amendments, and clauses. Drink caffeine.
Rambles on about nothing for the entire class. Most of the information on the tests come from the book and not the lecture. He is liberal. Conservatives will be annoyed and frustrated during his lectures
I like Dewhirst a lot as a person. He is very fun to talk to and is there to help outside of class whenever you need it. This Class is very rough to get an A in. Tests are all essays and mostly out of the book. No study guides and he doesn't tell you the essay questions so you are kind of on your own when trying to figure out what to study.
I wouldn't recommend taking him. He is a nice guy, but his test are 25 questions from the book and 25 from what you actually learn in class. He just stands up in front of the class and rambles on.
he is not a good teacher, he is very confusing and quite hard to follow 98% of the time. Just cares about himself and "jokes" are unbearable.
Dewhirst is a confusing man. He makes a lot of puns, and usually doesn't talk much about what's actually going to be on the test. MUST READ THE TEXT BOOK TO PASS THE TEST. 3 tests that he calls "opportunities" that are very tough. Beware, it's "quite alarming" "sports fans".
Dr. Dewhirst challenges the way you think about topics and present a topic from multiple angles. If you are a committed student and looking to get a lot out of a course, Dr. Dewhirst is your professor.
Do not skip class. I learned that the hard way, I almost failed his class, but it was my own fault. His lectures are more like really educated ramblings, he just talks to you about the topic of the day so you have to pay attention and write down basically everything. If you enjoy puns he's the guy for you. You will need to read your books, a lot.
He just sits in front of the class and rambles. Has nothing to do with layout of book or required notes to pass the test. If you have a option don't pick him.
Wouldn't say he's a mean professor, just old-fashioned. He really knows and explains his stuff but he will leave you in the dark when itcomes to what to expect on the test. And the reading is next to impossible to keep up with but if you don't read good luck. He adds free points to tests. Nobody appreciates his jokes though. I'm a sucker for puns.
