This professor is excellent. After taking his class, I became more confident in my public speaking. I highly recommend him for this class...

I don't recommend this instructor simply because he favors some student over others. My speech is as good as others but gave me a lower score. Harsy way, he told a friend to take another Eng. course b/c of her prononciation.
Rob is a tough teacher. However, you can learn a lot from his class. I don't dare talk at all in front of people before, but I become a good speaker after taking his public speaking class. he does encourage you a lot so that you can make it eventually.
His class seems fairly easy, yet strict and contains a lot of paperwork. He claims to be helpful, which is good, but seems distant - at least to some students. It seems like there is favoritism. But this class will help you to improve in public speaking.
Tough on grading, but sane enough. Consistent use of videotape for a speech class is a good idea.
He is an excellent professor. Very helpful and very clear. He makes everything cut and dry. He is very comforting which makes the process of speaking in front of the class very simple.
He's a cool teacher! There were a lot of ESL students in the class, but did not turn them away to take pronunciation class. He does play favortism, but you can talk him into giving you a higher score. No in class quizzes. It's online,&EASY(you can use the book)!Midterm&final are a replica of the quizzes!!
I got bit of accent but he still gave me A, he is a good teacher and is higly recomended
Rob was a great teacher! He was very helpful to everyone in the class. I hated speaking in front of people before I took this class.
he favor some student over another
Favoritism? Think not. Maybe it does exist, but that is probably because there are so many esl students that shouldn't be there in the first place. No offense, but this is a public speaking course, not a class where it teaches you english or pronunciation; we have other classes available for that reason. "Help us help you." Great professor.Take him
Mr. Dewis is a great teacher. I highly recommend taking a class with him. He doesn't grade on how perfect you give your speeches but on how hard you try. He just gives you the grade you deserve. Be aware, your ability to articulate effects your grade, so don't take this class if you still have trouble speaking in general.
He was easy and sometimes a little too easy on grading. When I thought I deserved a B he gave me an A. When someone deserved an F he gave them a C, wat the hell. I did learn a lot, mostly from the book. Hes nice.
dewis's class is difficult, yet, there is a lot to be gained from it if you do the work. I would recommend taking this class preceeding english 1a. it will teach you how to organize your thought pattern and make you a more efficient writer
great teacher
i didnt like dewis at all.sorry.i just didnt learn anything from him and he was unclear about a lot of stuff. and ya, he is an easy grader but this class will not help you become a better public speaker.and his quizzes are online, but you dont gain anything from them.I think i just prefer a teacher who i will actually learn stuff from.hes nice tho..
This teacher is the best teacher in the entire mission college, HE's MY FAVORITE teacher EVER....and i will admit he plays favorites ALOT
Nice guy. Lectures were material from book. Since the book was boring, lectures tended to be so too. Can be disorganized, but the class supplement lays out everything expected from you. Tests come straight from the on-line quizzes. Easy grader, but don't expect a complete cake-walk. Time for writing and PRACTICING speeches necesarry for good grade.
He's very hard and unfair. He grades our presentations by his Emotion Not by our Challenge: if he likes you or your topics, he gives you good point or Opposite. So Personality! You have to come to class before him because he won't accept late even 2-5 mins & it effects to your grade. He's nice from begining but after 2 first speechs, he's Terible :
I think he is a good teacher; however sometimes the material is a little dry. You get what you put into his class.
If he doesn’t like you right away then drop the class or start kissing up. Extremely Arrogant! Time for retirement!
Really good teacher. You don't need a book for his class and his tests are so easy. grades really easy on speeches to, if you are not nervous. If you have visual aids and all the info you will get an A or a B, guranteed to pass the class. He's esay but boring and talks alot and doesn't let you leave early.
Great teacher. He does a good job of explaining what is required. Exams are easy because they are 90% questions from the online quizzes. If you organize your outlines and speeches the way he wants them, and spend some time practicing outside class, you'll get a good grade. It would be difficult if you don't have good English skills.
I had fun in the class, you meet alot of people. The teacher does play favorites. You do not need to buy the textbook! DON'T BUY IT, only the workbook. The class is pretty easy.
Just be in class on time and follow his instruction. He grade on your improvement, not how good you are. For example, if you don't do well on your first speech and do better on the next one and next one ...you will get a better grade. If you do good on the first speech and bad on the next one and next one...you will get a lower grade. good luck
nice guy, can be a little moody at times. dont buy the textbook you do not need it trust me. you do need the workbook though. midterm and final are bonehead, every question is from the internet. i got a 100% on both. he grades on if you follow format, not if you are perfect and he does grade you better if he sees improvement.
Very organized, clear, and thorough. It was almost possible to not get it. I did well and I was so surprised because I am not a public speaker. I enjoyed the class and I wasn't expecting. I plan on taking more communication classes. Thanks Mr. Dewis for bringing out the public speaker I didn't know was there!
Great teacher, nice, funny, helpful and he is very organized and clear on what he wants. Too much work but I loved it and learned a lot from him, now it is easier for me to stand up in front of people and talk, it was never easy but this class helped a lot, this teacher knows how to help you on how to organize your speech to get over this problem.
Rob Dewis communication class was a cinch! Lots of work because of the outlines. Take the class if you want to be a better public speaker. He treats you like a person and is very clear about everything. Won't need the book just the study guide. Midterm and final answers are given to you online.
i had a B+ the whole semester this guy is a ****. I asked him for help and he rejected me he only likes his favorite students i got a ****ing C- and i did all my homework.
The class is easy, all you have to do is do outlines and speak. The subjects you choose to talk about is all based on you. So if you do a hard subject to talk about then you'll be screwing yourself. He's easy. When I'm in that class i feel like it's a cinch cuz I'm talking about what I wanna talk about.. so.. it's an easy class.
A great teacher in Mission College & COMM1. He has a very clear idea about what he wants to let you learn. He is very easy going and nice grade. LOTS EXTRA POINTS... Ya...
Rob knows his subject very well. I suggest taking his class if you really want to learn how to speak in front of a group of people and how to write your own speeches. However, there are a lot of paperwork and quizzes to do. Outlining in this class is also a big chunk of your grade.
Terrible!!! For somebody that's supposed to teach public speaking he's incredibly dull. Thinks all students are out to get him and cheat the system... makes it very clear he doesn't trust you. Grades unfairly... was getting straight A's until he found out I was a republican, C's ever since.
He is a good teacher, but the class is not easiest one.
Excellent professor. Easy grader. The best. His class is fun. Thanks Mr Dewis
This dude knows his stuff, but he's old school and doesnt screw around. He's hard core on due dates, but is very fair with grading.
Don't be fooled by his first and second day enthusiasm. He is VERY moody and at times rude. He contradicts what he wants on assignments when writing a paper its always a catch 22. Don't look at him while giving speeches because he makes rude faces and its distracting. He forms opinions of certain students and grades them harder. VERY anal professo
Stay om teacher's good side. Don't ask him for help, will belittle you. Constantly complaining about own life. Be careful with political views! Will grade based on personal beliefs about topics. Avoid conservative topics. Plays favorites. Sarcastic and Arrogant. Stay away from him when he has a bad day. More bad days than good!
this sucks. he is hard and is the worst grader i have ever had. id did a speech and he did heard or see half the stuff i was saying, so i gave my vidoe back to him and made him regrade it, i got more points than he was originally going to give me, but it was still a grade that did not reflect my work. please dont ever take this teacher.
I definitely have mixed feelings about this Professor. If your presentation skill is already high and you follow the procedures and step you will get an easy A. But, for others with lesser experience might need to keep up with procedures and curb their unwanted anxieties. Overall, he gets the job done. Grading is mostly based on information spoken.
Yeah, Dewis was in a bad mood all semester. Despite what the previous poster says, you can't get an A easily, even if you have high presentation skills and follow procedures. There were some great and excellent presenters in my class but they didn't get an A. Don't know how those you couldn't understand got As.
Knows what he is doing. Got a "B" in his class although might be very challenging @times. Would pass the class if you work hard. I think he grades students according to their work.
He plays favorites. He let a girl do her presentation without an outline even though he always says you can't do a presentation without an outline. He didn't let me or anyone else do a presentation without an outline. He's unfair.
I just wanted to say that I wasn't excited about taking public speaking, but Mr. Dewis is the best. He is hard, so if you aren't willing to work for your grade, don't take this course. Also, he is fair to everybody and he's very easy to approach. My suggestion: take this course, but don't expect an easy A, especially during a short session.
Mr. Dewis is a great teacher! I learned a lot from him. If you're prepared for your presentations and tests, you'll get an easy A.
DO WHAT HE SAYS! if you do it you'll get an A and learn all you'll need to transfer to a university. He gives you the resources so even if you are not a natural speaker you can do it. I'm at SJSU and taking a really hard writing seminar and I'm pleased to discover that I find it familiar thanks to R. Dewis.
Mr Dewis is awesome. Speech Anxiety is no joke. He helped me alot and I am so grateful. He can be tough but he makes you keep striving to improve. He is very patient and kind.
not easy...not at all... barely pass with C
Mr. Dewis is an interesting individual. He doesnt lecture on the book and his tests are based on your memorization skills. He is a nice person but once you are on his bad side there is no redeeming yourself.
Good teacher. all quizzes are online and you can take them as many times as you want and he takes your highest grade. i have him for a once a week class and at times there is a lot of work, but if you do the work, and just get through your speeches you'll paa. good teacher.
Liked this class because every time someone presents, you learn something new. So you are not only learning public speaking, but other things. Harsh grader, just always follow directions! Has his bad days, bad moods so don't get on his bad side. Do online quizzes, study them, work on visuals, outlines, biblio, offers some ec. You can do it!
I enjoyed the class itself overall, but I feel that what we learn in class is not what is on the actual tests. There is so much interesting discussion in class, but it doesn't really have anything to do with the class. I can tell you more about everyone's experiences in life but I couldn't pass the tests without some serious out of class studying..
Mr.Dewis plays favorites with students. He is intimidated by anyone who might be as smart as him. I think he needs to teach children because he has a hard time seeing us as adults. I am 30 yrs. old and have children and didnt appriciate his discriminative comments thoughout the semester regarding my capability to go to school as a single mom.
Rob creates a very calm and supportive environment for speech class. Follow his exact directions and it's easy. I learned how to make a speech, but also learned some different communication skills, styles and cultures. Remember, make it conversational!
Horrible teacher. Very rude and plays favorites. He takes off 4 points from your grade every day your absent. The quizzes in his class are extremely useless and hardly related to public speaking. There are 14 quizes and many of them are over 80 questions. Reauires a lot of pointless "busy" work and homework. Overall a bad teacher.
Really hard teacher, plays favorites, if things aren't done correctly he'll just give you a zero. You have to take about 12 quizes averaging about 50 questions! The midterm and final are based on the quizes, but midterm and final are only 50 questions each, but you have to study over 500 questions! Don't take him.
He is a wonderful teacher. He is a tough grader but you will notice through peer and self evaluations that his critiques on your speech are legit. He is very encouraging and supportive when you're up there. I am a more confident public speaker thanks in part to Mr. Dewis.
Great teacher. I loved this class. Class time goes by fast if you participate in the discussions and group activities. Do the quizzes on Angel and you'll see the exact same questions show up on the exams. As long as you keep up with your reflective writings and show up to class, you'll be fine. If you miss too many classes, he's quick to drop you.
Teacher was quite annoying. Left the class each day with a headache. He clearly has anger issues, and has a short fuse. Class is fairly easy...if you do EXACTLY as he says. If you can, take a different teacher. If you HAVE to, just do EVERYTHING he says, and always show up to class, and you should pass...
This teacher like to evaluate the students in his personality. It is unfair at all. Be careful if you take his class. Boring class at all.
Thought he was a great teacher. Can be snappy when you're obviously someone who isn't taking school seriously. Otherwise wants you to succeed. His instructions are pretty clear and if you follow them to the tee you'll do fine! Quizzes are lengthy but copy and paste for a study guide. Same ans! Didn't use the text at all.. Only the workbook
Very tough grader. I am proud to have gotten an A in this class. Thought it would be an easy grade, but I had to work for it. He seems angry and unapproachable at times, but you have to be able to ask him for help if you want to succeed. He was very helpful when I asked.
So. His system is almost bureaucratic. It's very complicated and involves lots of jumping through hoops. Like there are 3 steps per step and not all steps apply to any given task. There are inconsistencies in the work he asks for. It makes it very difficult. I've had these type of teachers before who try to organize too much and create convolution.
You can not say that he is a bad teacher because you do learn something in his classes. But his class give you some an uncomfortable feelings that you have to he his abosolute servant. Do exactly what he asks. You do not have such a freedom that is acceptable to other instructors. Such as speak up your own opiniion about some problems.
He can be very snappy sometimes, and quite rude to students if he was in bad mood. My advice: do your best and do not argue with him. You will get buzzed!!
Though professor Dewis grades hard on the speeches, he is very helpful when you ask questions and need help. As long as you really want to learn and build the knowledge, he is willing to support and help you succeed. His instructions and expectation are very clear, so just follow exactly the directions and you will be fine.
I took this course in the Summer which I would not recommend. His grading is very unforgiving on the speeches so make sure you follow the grading guidelines well. For the amount of work you will do in this class you will most likely not receive the grade you feel you deserve (I didn't and I'm an A student). I would not recommend this professor.
I do not agree on the comment that all the negative comments coming from lazy students. I was in the class where he got snappy on the student who had question about him. Very emotional.
Follow his outline, don't be late. Speak naturally like talking to friends you will pass with an A so easily. I couldn't believe some of the comments posted here, like someone else said if you're lazy then you won't like him.
Prof. Dewis is the most egotistical Professor I have ever had. His class is common sense and his grading criteria is based on his opinion. Unfortunately he treats his students like children -teaches with a condescending attitude and is an avid roll taker. He has a very short fuse and all in all is actually a poor public speaker himself.
Show up to EVERY class, follow his workbook EXACTLY, do everything he says and you'll pass. You NEED the book to answer the completely irrelevant test questions as more than half are not common sense. I don't know how much is curriculum, but for a PUBLIC SPEAKING class 50% of the grade is jumping through hoops. Takes himself too seriously.
Worst teacher. A lot of online work, never mentioned in class. Only on the first day and week before 12+ online chapters are due. I would not recommend
He is an awesome teacher as long as you follow his policy .easy A
Rob is a great teacher. I really enjoyed taking intercultural communications with him. He shows a lot of short videos to make it very understandable. I took this class as a once a week class. His test are not hard at all. All he does is grabs your weekly tests from angel and puts into a exam that you take in class. Miss class he takes points off.
The Midterm and Final Material was never covered in class. The quizzes are between 20-40 questions each and are only worth 2 points. I know it doesn't make sense. These questions are also nowhere near common sense. Please select a different professor in the communications department at Mission College so this instructor can be phased out.
I am not from this country and he talked to me like I was a child. Very rude. His grading methods are clearly based on his point of view. If he agrees with you its a guaranteed A. Clearly my ability to adress controversial issues was not appreciated in his academic environment.
He is a very subjective teacher, very moody too. You need to pray before your presentation that he is in his mood. He plays faverism. Not very rational person. My recommendation, don't take him
Finally, this was my last speech. I was so frustrated after all because all the things that I've learned from this class were not the methods to improve my communication skill. English is not my primary language. Be careful! He's very moody. I always tried my best to improve myself. But sorry. Think twice if you do not want to take risks!I'm done.
Genuinely nice guy. Very caring and personable, and really tries to help students get over their fear of public speaking. But you have to do the work. It won't be an easy A. Even though I'm not a great speaker, I did the work, gave adequate speeches, outlined correctly, and got the grade I wanted. Don't slack and then whine when you fail.
Rob is an ideal professor for this class. He seeks to understand many different cultures represented by members of the class. Intercultural communications is about being open to other ways of doing things/understanding the world around us. Simple: weekly quiz online, two tests, short reaction papers, and film paper. Lots of extra credit.
Follow his instructions EXACTLY, even if they seem like busy work. Not very hard: graded on about 13 online quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final, and 5 speeches+outlines. Quizzes, midterm, & final are based on the book, which is not discussed at all in class. Has difficulty hiding that he is annoyed, but will grade fairly, as long as you do what he says.
Professor Dewis seems a bit frustrated most of the time. He has a particular way about him that is depressing often, and his demeanor is far from enthusiasm. Occasionally he is in a good mood but more often than not he is in a poor mood. For many people, speaking is a challenge. If your speech is a few seconds too long, prepare to be graded bad
