We love Dr. D.! --Dr. D teaches some online legal courses and he is always there for us--unlike other professors! We learn lots in his classes !He also helps to boost our self esteem!
Firm but Fair, in a subject that demands the same...
He has a way of pushing us just a little more to make us realize we can go that much farther and the law is not that scary!
Dr. D has no clue what he is talking about. He send people to talk to the wrong people about service learning and club involvement needed for the university day after day. He also asignes WAY to much work for this one credit class. It should be worth at least 3 with that amount he assigns.
Do not take this prof. for styles and ways. He gives so much work and expects way too much considering this class is only worth one credit.

Awesome teacher! He grades hard, but if you are a hard worker you will love that class and get a good grade as well!
in this class you get the grade you deserve..if you want an a you have to work for it, but he def. makes it possible
He is the WORST online teacher I ever had. His idea of instruction is to tell you to read the syllabus and posting websites. This guy may as well not even be there - he isn't anyway. Fortunately for me, I have a good class & we teach each other. Unfortunately HE teaches all the online courses for Legal Studies. I think I'll be switching school
Dr. D. has to be one of the best professors at FGCU; his style is a blend of Socratic styling mixed with a very rigid instructor; if you come away with anything less than a B you just didn't want to do well; always available to his students and is an advocate of READ, READ, READ. You don't understand, well, READ!!!!! That is what 90% of law is!!!!
Dr. D is an amazing teacher. I loved his style of teaching. He is extremely determined to helping his students learn. Expect an email of extra notes at least once a week. He's upfront with the grading. You will learn so much information in this course!! He keeps in interesting. I would definitely recommend Dr. D but don't assume he's an easy A.

Professor is extremely fair in his grading. He responds on a timely basis and encourages his students to do their best. You will learn a lot from this instructor and the course.
He is not a good teacher for online classes. I have never done a face to face class of his but his online is horrible! And don't ask questions - he ridicules you for it.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR ONLINE CLASSES!! I used to like him alot - 3 classes ago. Now he seems to have lost complete interest in his online classes. His only participation is to criticize, make a snide comment(limited to one per lesson) or he just ignores questions and avoids any participation at all. Gave us the wrong page # & said "figure it out"!
he doesn't teach. you're totally on your own. make friends with the good people in class and hope for the best.
hIS CLASS WAS VERY STRICT AND NOT VERY INTERESTING. hAD US DO ASSINMENTS ON SPRING BREAK. DO NOT TAKE HIM ONLINE. WILL NOT GIVE YOU ANY EXTRA TIME TO COMPLETE WORK. NOT A NICE PROFESSOR. CLASS "CHECKLIST" IS UNCLEAR.
PROFESSOR IS USELESS, HATES STUDENTS, REALLY DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOU!!! WHO CARES IF YOU TRY OR NOT....I GOT AN A...BUT THAT WAS OUT OF PURE LUCK AND RANDOM GUESSING ON MIDTERMS. NO ONE PASSES HIS MIDTERMS IN ANY CLASSES TO THE POINT THAT HE HAS TO GIVE POINTS AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER!!! HE IS NOT DR. D...CUZ HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE HIS DOCTORATE!!!
Dr. D is not an easy professor, his classes require a lot of hard work and dedication. However, if you put 100% percent into the class you will be rewarded by a good grade. In addition, most of his courses are online and in groups.
This professor calls himself an "educator", yet provides ZERO input. His course is the "group" concept where you and others in your group teach yourselves. He does not participate in any discussions and his limited responses are rude, offensive, and very unprofessional. BOTTOM LINE: AVOID THIS "EDUCATOR".
I had this professor last semester, but it was an online class. He is definitely not a good online teacher, provides no interest in the students, only cares about you doin everything he asks for. His exams are actually not that hard, you really have got to sit down and work on them, but they are kind confusing. Avoid if possible.
Very useless, and his method on online groups are alitte ridiculous
You wanna make sure your group is doing excellent in posting ur responses. This is very important to him, so be a hardass and make you fellow group members do work on time. lso, I suggest you read the book, otherwise you wont learn a lot from this professor,he does not care about students at all - he think's he's the****.Midterms are sort of easy.
Horrible proffesor. For teaching an online course, he should facilitate learning more effectively
I have this this professor three times over the course of my education at FGCU. Honestly, once you get the hang of the group set up that he makes you do, it's not that bad. The midterms are tricky and the final is usually a paper or a project. If you have questions ask you group members, not him as he is not accommodating.
He is arrogant and I'm not sure how helpful he is at a professor. I've taken many online classes before, he must be one of the least likable teacher I've had. Has no sense of humor. I really don't know what he's got to match that "high horse" attitude of his - has he ever even practiced law? Is he a successful lawyer? As an educator, he sucks!!!
Useless, Unclear, disorganized, and ego-driven. One of the worst professors I have ever had. I will do everything in my power to not take this professor again.
Dr. D is a very dificult proffessor that sets up his online classes in groups, and has very awkward times and deadlines for group homework. He does not give any lenience if you miss an assignment due to missunderstanding his hard system, and is generally very unhelpful. I will not take any of his courses again.
I did not listen to any of the warnings on here and boy am I sorry.. This is by far the worst teacher at FGCU. Very disorganized, and when you ask a question he copies and pastes text from the syllabus which DOESN'T answer your question. and to make matters worse I worked my bum off in that class.. had an A on almost everything.. and yet got a B!
You'd think that having him as an online teacher, in which he does nothing more than list our assignments and grade them, that he could at least respond to your questions with something other than words to the effect "sorry, I don't know what to tell you." By far the most uninvolved, unhelpful, cold teacher I have encountered thus far.
I took a number of Dr. D's classes for my undergrad degree and have just read through the posings- I can understand why some students may have written poor comments- but here is what is important- he is a college professor and expects COLLEGE level work- if you can't handle the work- don't take him.
I personally did not like the group aspect of his classes- every single class- and I took 4 were all set up the same way- if you are not on a strong group your screwed. Everyone in the group receives the same grade regardless of how much work a person does on the group. Needs a better system to show him who is doing the work and who is slacking
avoid this teacher at all costs that is unless you want to fail a class or ruin you gpa
I found Dr. D. to be prompt in his replies and helpful. Also understanding when I sent him the wrong file for an assignment. His grading was fair to the amount of effort extended.
Terrible professor. he will destroy your gpa. Cocky and useless; avoid him if you can.
Worse professor ever ! Very confusing !! Avoid !! Ruined my gpa !! Took points off for having too broad of a topic when he chose our topics and took points off for not having a cover page when he told us to use mla (which doesn't use cover pages)
Not the easiest class. Assignments intimidating, however he is very helpful and prompt when helping clarify if there's a problem.
The class consisted of a huge homework assignment, a midterm and a project. the midterm was extremely difficult but not too bad. The homework and project were confusing but it is important to start them early. It definately is not an easy A by any means whatsoever.
By far, my favorite teacher at FGCU. He is fast to respond to emails and gives great feedback.
I have taken Professor Diotalevi for three semesters in a row now. His grades depend only on three to four big assignments. You must work for these grades. Do the homework, the midterm project and the final project is usually always so type of writing sample; a research paper or a memo, anything legal. He is very helpful, ask for help!
This is one of my favorite professors at FGCU. I have taken several classes with him. Please do not go by some of the comments here. If you do your work and study, you will do well on his class and learn a lot, which to me is the main purpose of taking these courses. I believe he is great, organized, smart, and cares about his students.
GPA killer!!! Listen to what people are saying its all true. I took him 2 times and nothing changed
Professor Diotalevi is fair in grading but get ready to complete long assignments. I have taken him twice and his powerpoints help alot.
I don't know everyone is complaining about Professor Diotalevi. There are three huge assignments, but if you follow his instructions, you'll get an "A" like I did. Before taking his class, I tried refused to take any of his classes because of these lame reviews. I am happy that I ignored them. Just work hard and you'll pass this class.
Buries you with hours of Youtube videos and websites to learn the subject. Very disappointed in this class because I think I would have enjoyed it. It was almost like he enjoys making the class difficult and confusing. Avoid him if you can.
By FAR the worst professor I've ever taken. Only 4 assignments for the entire semester and they are horrible with little to no instructions on how to complete. Is extremely rude in email responses. UNHELPFUL. Doesn't teach, just posts links to videos. Will give you very low grade and not explain why. Makes you feel dumb for asking questions.
Information OVERLOAD! You need to seriously dig around for actual instructions. He offers way too many resources, youtube videos, websites, etc. Only 4 assignments all semester. If you actually work on those assignments then you're good to go. All in all, it's a semi-easy A.
he only gives 4 assignments a semester (including midterm and final). the assignments were big and a lot, it took me days to complete. I received B's on everything. Midterm and final have almost nothing to do with the book, and were worded weird and was hard to know the answers. stay away if possible
I've taken 2 of his classes only because he teaches a lot of the required classes for the legal studies major. He's obviously a smart guy but he's a garbage professor. He is not very helpful when you ask questions (He refers you to his forum for an information overload) and he's usually vague about his grading criteria. If you can avoid him, DO IT!
Start assignments ahead of time. Try your best and you'll be fine. For this class we had 4 main assignments: Short Paper - about an amendment (5 pgs), Midterm- mainly info on the slides (33 questions mult. choice), Homework: 5 case briefs (1 pg each) and Final Project: paper about the book "A matter of Interpretation" by Antonin Scalia (8 pgs)
I was nervous about this class because there are only 4 assignments the entire semester. The assignments are not something you can start the night before, but as long as you do a little bit every day 7-10 days before it's due, the work itself is easy. I got an A on everything.
There are 4 assignments throughout the semester, whatever you receive for each grade is final and cannot be resubmitted for extra points. I suggest you prepare assignments probably one or two weeks in advance to make sure you don't miss anything. If you could take another professor I would advise it. Ethics is common sense, but not when its hard.
If you're looking for a class to take in criminal justice or legal studies major, look somewhere else. You end up buying a book that cost close to $200 just so you do research outside. Thank again before deciding. Good luck folks!
Upon reading comments, it is apparent some people need to be bottle-fed. Dr. D. is not your guy. This isn't the way life is and certainly not in the legal realm! He provides everything you need to be successful and is available to clarify cogent concerns. I've emailed him numerous times with almost immediate responses. Do the work, reap the rewards
I have taken two of Dr. Ds Classes at this point, his classes are very "canned" but as long as you can self-pace you will do fine!
Do not take him. I messaged him numerous times for help when he responded it is always something sarcastic. The way this class set up is unbelievable. You have to go through tons of information to find what you are looking for and half of the links that he shares do not work. I have never in my three years of college met a prof. like this.
Taken his classes twice now. The classes are good for an easy A however be prepared to get tons of emails that do not help with anything. The professor is very unorganized and horrible. He is sarcastic and has no compassion for anyone. Avoid him at all costs if you actually want to learn something.
No idea where some of these people are coming from. Midterm was fair, a lot of information from the book and he encourages you to use outside sources when taking it... I got an 85 on the midterm but the other two assignments I got 100s on. (3 total PLUS AN EC ASSIGNMENT IF YOU NEED IT!). 95% overall. Completely doable to get an A if you work for it
I don't know why he has such a low rating! I loved this course. Only 4 assignments overall, takes time but I don't need to be doing useless assignments every week. He sends you emails daily with information and responded to my questions immediately. Would take again. Recommend.
He is odd in that his grading scale is not the most explicit and he is so very tough in grading assignments. I have had two classes with him and the average overall grade for most assignments was a 65 or so out of 100 for one class and for the second it has been around a 70. Several times there have been assignments where no one has gotten an A.
He was the worst professor I've ever had. The grading is horrible and inconsistent. He gives VAGUE guidelines on his expectations for assignments and yet grades harshly when one follows that. Learned nothing at all. You could put in your absolute best effort in an assignment and yet the only feedback given is what was bad and how bad it was.
If you're considering taking this professor, do yourself a favor and swerve to the next option. he's a horrible horrible teacher, very demeaning when he speaks to you. He will belittle your questions and make you feel stupid. Will ALWAYS you to refer to the syllabus for everything. Don't make the same mistake I did, take someone else.
Two papers (plus one EC) and a midterm. Follow his instruction to the letter, use a lot of outside research for both papers and midterm. While this may not be the most conventional of methods, half of the lectures are purely "how to look up this info and where." Vague on grading boundaries but not an impossible prof to work with.
This professor is extremely rude and demeaning, the most arrogant professor I have ever encountered. Regardless of his less than stellar people skills, trying to understand and locate his expectations for classwork are nearly impossible. Do not rely on the syllabus, it only has half the information/criteria for the assignments! Forum posts help.
MY ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR FGCU LAW STUDENTS IS AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Supposed to teach you but the minute you ask a question about an assignment he says he cant give you the answers and then proceeds to never teach anything
This prof is THE GPA TANKER. He teaches very exclusive classes for the law major at FGCU so there is NO WAY TO GET AROUND HIM. Plan your entire undergrad around this dude if you want a nice GPA. Not impossible to achieve a decent grade but it will take the entire semester to figure out what he's looking for because he will not tell you.
Professor Diotalevi is one of the few professors at FGCU that seems legit. I would say his Legal Research & Writing course was one of the most important and influential with my law path. He only has five assignments and one of them is the extra credit portion. The feedback is valuable and meaningful.
Very few assignments. You have to dig and really look for all the information needed to complete assignments. Assignments are not super difficult but you have to stay on top of things. Lots of details and research are necessary to make him happy. Doesn't give detailed critique when grading assignments.
I've had Diotalevi for multiple courses now and each tends to be the same. About four assignments throughout the semester that weigh a big chunk of your grade. They are easy if you start early, but are manageable for any last-minute workers. Diotalevi deeply cares about his students and is very approachable if help is needed. 10/10 would recommend.
The people that complain about this professor are not going to make it. There is no hand-holding for his courses. He has 2 assignments, one EC and a midterm which has answers straight from the book. He is 95% clear in his instruction, if you cannot figure out the 5% on your own, pick a new major. LE/RE is an independent topic.
This class is difficult, but that is not the professor's fault. It truly prepares you for the future in law and is a weeding out class. It is going to be difficult, but the professor is super understanding and helpful. He is amazing!!
Does not actually grade, just freestyles what he chooses to grade. Very rude when you try to email about work or grades. The Legal Studies major at FGCU is thought by incompetent professors who could care less about student success. Unclear on what he expects and thinks because he has a PHD he can do whatever he wants when it comes to grading.
He's a harsh grader, impossible to get in contact with, vague about what he wants on assignments, and there were no lectures. He's not an understanding professor, he doesn't care if you learn or not. Its a waste of money to take his course. You wind up teaching yourself with no help from the professor. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
For ALL of his classes you have 4 assignments total so if you screw up one its almost impossible to get your grade back up. He's confusing as to what he wants in his papers and in his modules the links are outdated and most of the time don't work. Completely unavoidable good luck.
Went from straight A's previous semester to having him ruin my GPA with this one class. A total of approximately 4 assignments and his response to why he graded my paper extremely low was "It is not based upon fairness." No explanation where I needed to fix my case brief. Truly upsetting, DO NOT RECOMMEND!
We had one homework assignment the entire semester. The homework assignment itself does not state specific instructions. He writes in ur homework FEEDBACK that he wanted a long length answer for each question. If it is not long enough, he will give you a bad grade, even if it is right. Then you have only the final 10 page paper to improve ur grade.
One homework assignment entire semester. Does not give specific instructions on how he wants the assignment. Instead in your hw FEEDBACK he will send a lengthy response saying he wanted long responses, even if ur answers are right. Then you only have a 10 page paper to improve ur grade. Gives txtbk to read the entire semester with no outline.
I feel bad because he seems like he cares, but wow is he bad at teaching. Everything is extremely disorganized to the point where the weeks don't align and you don't know what's what for anything anywhere, he is unhelpful and uninvolved in teaching, and you are truly alone. Few assignments aren't bad, I prefer them, but this is just crazily bad.
Ok, I have seen the other reviews for this class but like I enjoyed him a ton. As long as you realize that he wants long hw assignments and papers because he only gives 3 or 4 assignments you are golden. Actually take the time to learn what the textbook is telling you and find reputable outside sources to cite and you WILL get an A.
Took one of his classes before and everything was fine. It all went downhill from this class. If you can avoid taking any class with him then avoid it! I'd rather count every single grain of sand that exists on Earth than ever take one of his classes again.
Prof. Diotalevi is knowledgeable and hands-on, even with his online distance-learning courses. The course load is low and he offers plenty of instruction to end up with the grade you want on them.
Not a good teacher, incredibly disorganized, it's a wild goose chase to find ONE instruction and you have to hunt for them because the "lessons" don't align with the weeks, emails you useless stuff every day. The syllabus was from Spring 2018, that should tell you enough.
When I tell you this was one of the worst academic experiences in my career, heed the warning. If I had time an energy the dean would've been involved. He hands out failing grades like candies and there are only 5 grades total. For a professional ethics course, I learned more being his student of who not to become from him than his "lessons".
Personally, I found Professor Diotalevi's instruction to be clear and insightful. He provides ample course materials for your review. He is accessible by email for questions and always responded within 24 hours. You are graded on basically three assignments: two major memos and a midterm exam. DO NOT wait until the last minute to start his memos!!!
I've taken 2 of his courses & am enrolled for a third. He has 5 assignments due in total. He has always helped answer my questions & always let us take a creative approach to assignments. I think the negative reviews may be ppl who didnt read his instructions. He always provided examples of written assignments. We need more professors like him!
