This instructor slacks like crazy. In fact, he dosetn even create the course online. I logged in, and i see discussions from people in last quarter, and the course itself is incomplete, half the stuff that is said in the syllabus isnt even there. Very skeptical about this instructor and whether he actually knows how to teach or not.
super boring. quizzes arent too hard so long as you read a bit and listen in class. nice guy, but does nothing to make the class remotely interesting. hw policy is way too complicated, but not very difficult to meet standards. use the book a lot. its really your best source of info. study the chronology of events and the general BIG topics.
Easy A/B class. Hw is really easy and you get a letter grade. His grading scale benefits you, (50%=passing). Class is boring & kinda useless but he takes attendance everyday. Use both textbooks, and make sure to read the sourcebook, it has to do with the final paper, unless you do a presentation. Don't take him if you have the choice, take Perry.
Took class online. Great class. The prof holds chat sessions to answer any questions and responds quickly to any addtional questions. Coursework isn't too difficult. There is a lot of reading for the class since it is online. He provides study aids for the midterm and final. If you make the effort to use them the class is an easy A.
Good class, as long as you can keep up with his homework assignments. The layout is a bit complicated really. If you pay attention in class and make sure to take notes, you'll do fine on all the quizzes and the test. Prof occasionally goes on tangents, but appears passionate about what he's teaching.
Do not take. Class is only lectures where he attempts to repeat to us the assigned book work but seems under prepared and disorganized, usually ranting about things irrelevant to the course for a majority of the time(i would'v learned same amount from book alone). tests are easy but use arguable multiple choice questions. easy A but not worth it.
Personally I like Doan. He is pretty cool and his lectures are interesting enough that I don't mind going to class.
information in lectures and assignments often do not match. The information that is given in class is given in a rant format, has very little structure and organization, and has little to do with actual test/hw content. Most of class period is spent figuring out how to use dvdplayer/ projector. DO NOT TAKE - VERY BAD
Doan was a good teacher. Not super boring, not super interesting either. Easy to prepare for tests as long as you know the terms and dates. Not a bad class if you just want to go, and be done. I learned a bit from him, I don't regret his class.
Online. This class is designed to make you fail. There is no structure; the tests are six minutes long, and the questions are confusing and not always from the textbook. The teacher imposes an impossible word restriction. I used to be a straight A student-not anymore. I've taken some pretty appalling classes; this one takes the cake. DO NOT TAKE!
SUCKS. Dont have take his class. I was having a hard time and stayed after class a BUNCH to talk to him about what I needed to do to improve; such as certain topics I needed to really study up on and he didnt tell me anything! Just said I needed to study more! What a d*ck! not worth taking... you'll be wasting your time
Very dissapointed in Doan. I attempted to take his online class, and the professor was inaccessible, and very slow to respond. When he did respond, the responses were vague and unhelpful. Attempted to get clarification on why my assignment was too detailed, and received a response over a week later. Ended up dropping the class to protect GPA.
He is vert dirty. Most of the time his clothes have stains on them or they look like they haven't been washed i inbmonths. He also spends too much time trying to figure out how the projector works, insted of giving up and just teaching. He also gives tests that are very unorganized then tries to change it after he has handed it out. Stay away!!
Not going to lie, not a big fan of Doan at ALL. He has a very biased grading system, and im pretty sure he hates everybody. His assignments dont make sense, and when he says he cannot read MY handwriting, nobody can read his.
He was a good teacher not boring just as long as you can read and write you should get an A. His test are basic and straight to the point. Good teacher.
He is a very mean person and he seems to be very biased when giving out grades. If he doesn't like you, you get a bad grade. He likes to yell and gets very upset at the tiniest things.
Oh my gosh. This guy was such a jerk. No matter how hard I studied, it was never good enough. He always found something wrong with it. Even if I studied everything there was to know about a concept. Trust me. It was never enough. Do NOT take him if you like passing classes.
Though he seems to really have a passion for what he teaches, as a person he is unorganized/unclear. If you read the text you should be fine. Many people didn't bother coming to class because his lectures were so "rambling". Would talk for a long time but then I would realized I didn't learn anything. Would not recommend this teacher.
his clothes are dirty and unclean and he seems unorganized very unorganized looks like stoner kinda acts but has pointless projects and lectures are basically hella boring
Taking American History online this summer. He requires online discussion, so fully understanding course material is a must, which I like. Seems to be good at responding to emails, but grades VERY inconsistently, and if you don't memorize the text, good luck on the tests.
Absolutely terrible teacher. Took online class with him, totally inconsistent with his grading, and is VERY unorganized. Just an awful time with this teacher. Terrible. His grades make absolute no sense, and discussions are ridiculous. Don't take this teacher.
He missed one or two of the points in my essays and marked me down a grade, despite the fact my essay did include the point. When I called him on it he said he'd review and never did. Other than that fiasco, i'd have to say if a carful student pays attention and does the work, you can expect an A or B.
Robert Doan is a good teacher, his lectures are always clear. This is the type of class where one participates in an active learning setting. I learned much and hope to have him again as a teacher. Go Phyillies!
Didnt like his teaching method. He always goes off topic diein his lectures.
This teacher is possible one of the most boring i have had in my life. Not only does he talk for a good 40 minutes with nothing to aid him but a map, but you don't know what is important and what is not. I don't like his teaching method and i don't like his attitude.
he is a HORRIBLE teacher. he doesn't know how to be presentable. i don't understand why he gives lectures when they have absolutely NOTHING to do with the content. you should ALWAYS read your textbook because the teacher doesn't teach anything. him tests don't make much sense and he never gives anyone full credit. HORRIBLE teacher. DON'T TAKE HIM!
Mr. Doan is one of those teachers you go "cool guy, alright teacher." I have not had a problem with his teaching skills, but neither does he have extraordinary professorial abilities. Cool dude, though. I took HIST101 with him and found it interesting and easy. Best combination you can get.
Doan is possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. I was completely unable to follow anything he ever said. He rarely ever had powerpoints, and he rambled constantly about topics that had absolutely nothing to do with what we were actually learning. The only way I survived this class was by reading the textbook. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I am an older student, taking a summer class. His grading is inconsistent. WHen doing quizzes or tests it is all over the place. You better memorize all the books or you will never pass his class. He doesn't tell you what to study for and you have an abundance of reading.Forget taking other classes, this one requires all your attention. :)
Horrible, boring teacher. Shows Youtube videos and doesnt teach anything. Work is easy, but he calls out slackers in class
WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. Unless you are naturally genius when it comes to history, do not take him. I amn so frustrated with this class. Good grades are hopeless.
He's one of the easiest teachers I've had. He lectures and shows clips a lot but that is enough to get A's on all his tests. I haven't even opened the book yet. In his 210 course there is a lot going on so he has to bounce around but he gives you the timeline. He's also really forgiving about late work. He's a good teacher and very passionate.
Hard to follow his lectures. He would ramble off on different topics. I would not recommend him as a professor to take.
He is quite possibly the most distracted and disorganized teacher I've ever had. In his 101 history of civilization at the moment and he just rambles! I'm lucky this is my favorite subject, if I had no or little knowledge i'd fail.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. He is very disorganized. There is either a text quiz or map quiz or exam in every single class until the end of the quarter. This class is so much work, and he spends all his time not getting to the point. Yet he has high standards when grading our papers.
Doan is a tough teacher in that he expects you to know about the subject before he teaches it in class. Unorganized and doesn't really tell you what chapter you are in. His feedback to essays and quizzes are difficult to understand. 3 text quizzes and 4 map quizzes. the textbook will be your best friend on tests, all answers will be in there.
cons:unorganized, rambles, boring, critique's and deducts points for dumb reasons, incomprehensible essay feedback. pros: passing grade is 50%, if you attend every day, take good notes and study hard, you should do well.
Boring, unorganized, repetitive, loves to interrupt. He doesn't teach new material, just repeats what is in the book. Save yourself from his messy handwriting and poor teaching skills. I just spent the whole quarter in his class pondering what we were actually learning...
He's very disorganized, random, and hard to follow. The class is extremely boring. If you come everyday and are able to stay awake enough to take good notes, you should do well. Study guides never helped me on the tests, the topics are just way too broad. Maybe a cool guy deep down but teaching isn't his calling in life.
A supportive professor with a genuine interest in the student's understanding of the material. I suspect he loves the subject because it shows. He provided good supportive material that made the stories connect much better. Fantastic class.
I took this class on Monday and Wednesdays for two hours. I literally woke up and already dreaded this class. He is so boring, whenever he talked I would read in the book, the reading you receive for the night is literally what he talks about in class. He sucks at grading and gives you B+/B grades which are unclear he says he goes by "percentage"
This professor expects WAY too much of his students. Not the amount of assignments (which are a lot too) but the amount of detail required in our weekly responses/essays/whatever else is ridiculous. If you miss one minor detail, he'll mark you down into oblivion. If you aren't an eloquent history buff, getting a good grade will be difficult.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. Do not take this guys class.
Great teacher. You can tell he loves what he teaches. Pretty easy class.
He's a smart professor with a passion for history. The lectures can be a bit boring at times, but as long as you pay attention and use the study guides you will ace your tests.
I was extremely excited to take this class before it started. It seems to be a bit of a letdown though. The course is interesting and he goes off the textbook fairly consistently, no problems there. The problem comes that he Quizzes on material that hasn't been covered. Bit of a problem there. Open office, great guy. Wouldn't take his class.
Worst teacher i have ever had! he's so unorganized and hard to fallow! H'e makes no sense and his test are really tough, and he expects way to much for what he's actually teacher. He literally just talks mostly about his travels and showed us pictures of where's he's been.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUYS CLASS. I took his class twice a week for 2hrs. He rambles, he has AWFUL penmenship(good luck taking notes), he has too many testsquizzes, he grades really tough, gives hard tests and holds high expectations for students but his teaching technique is AWFUL. THERE ARE NO STUDY GUIDES. For the sake of your gpa, do not take!!!!!!
You better like history to take this class. You also need to be ale to survive long lectures and get ready to answer in class because if not you're doomed.
Don't take this class if you are a visual learner you have to read a lot and theres not a lot of maps or anything to help clarify and he isnt leanite at all, I ask for his help and all he says " is preparation is key" How can I prepare if I don't understand anything DONT TAKE
He is an okay teacher, but there is SO much reading. Midterms are super tough and the weekly assignments are horrible. On them if you miss a single detail he brings your grade way down. He says he doesn't grade that harsh on grammar but doesn't mind marking up your paper. He spends a lot of time showing the class things on Google and rambled alot!
Professor Doan is a great guy with a passion for learning, but he will get sidetracked. Many of his lectures are long. Unfortunately, the "text" that we used was the script for a BBC documentary series. It was very wordy and difficult to follow along. His tests were easy if one had studied. This is not an easy A class.
This is not an easy A class.
I honestly don't bother paying attention in this class and find myself reading out of the textbook instead. Everything I have learned has been from what I have read. His lectures are unorganized and jump from place to place. Its nearly impossible to take notes due to horrible penmanship. if you read the book you'll probably pass, its just not fun..
I dropped this class pretty quick. I love history but I couldn't find myself paying attention. He is not clear at all with assignments and I could never differentiate what where important notes and what were off topic comments during his lectures. He is constantly going into boring tangents that really have little relevance to the course.
His way of teaching, lecturing, and explaining things is all confusing. Rarely does he make sense. He expects you to already know quite a bit about history before the class even starts. He is a very tough grader, and he grades very slowly. You won't see your grade on canvas for at least a couple weeks. He is also mean. He calls people out in class.
History is my best subject and I found myself severely struggling in this class. He is unclear with what criteria he wants you to meet whilst at the same time being a tough grader. He goes off on tangents and is hard to understand most of the time. Good luck reading his handwriting. Read the textbook and you'll be fine, otherwise you're in trouble.
I will do a grand favor for the sake of all prospective students who think they're interested in taking this class and warn you that taking this class will drag you so far down that your body would literally pierce clean through the Earth's core. There has never been so horrible of a class. I will save you the dramatization of the specifics.
I wouldn't ever take this professor he is no help and expects perfection. Every reason for not doing something is just an excuse to him. Don't take this class if it is with him!!!
This teacher may know a lot about history, but he is not "teacher" material. The subject is very interesting, but unfortunately he is extremely disorganized, will not give helpful feedback, blames students for things that are his responsibility as a teacher and specifically stated that he "rarely" gives full points, no matter how good work is. Sad.
I love all things history. Unfortunately, this history professor makes it difficult to love anything about the subject. He is unclear on assignments, does not respond to questions about assignments or tests so you are left in the dark. He is arrogant and unapproachable, even though this is an online class I'm nervous to even ask him a question.
For a 101 class, this was by far one of the most difficult I have taken, even in comparison to 400 level classes. His expectations are intangible, he doesn't respond to email, and is very awkward to talk to in person. Nothing is good enough, yet there is little instruction to improve. His writing skills are poor and it's difficult to decipher.
Many students in this online class struggled with Dr. Doan. I think a lot of people were more upset about the fact that his tests are tough and you really have to work hard to get the grade you want. I had him for 2 classes during the same quarter and got an A- in 101 and an A in 103. I feel like I learned a lot and overall he's a fair grader.
Dr. Doan is a great teacher, I have learned so much from his class. Yes, he does have issues with spelling and grammar occasionally but I've never had an issue understanding the assignments. I would take his class again.
Dr. Doan gives really long lectures, but they can be interesting. His Handwriting and notes are a mess. His Mid and Finals were IN Class Essays. But he's a very helpful teacher. He clarified any questions I had in the class. He may be a slightly tough grader, but he gives some extra credit. He definitely loves history and is very knowledgeable.
The tests take up the entire class time & he'll occasionally make you write an essay at the same time. Terrible handwriting so don't even bother asking a classmate what he wrote because I guarantee that no one will know. & he is an incredibly tough grader so trust me, you should steer away from this professor. An online course would be way better.
He is awful. No one knows what he's writing and you honestly have to learn the whole class yourself using the textbook. For essays he doesn't even tell you how he wants it and then gives you a terrible grade. Please get a different professor. I normally have all A's and I currently have a C. Steer away.
Everything I took away from this class came straight from the textbook. Lectures are disorganized, and grading criteria is unclear on almost all assignments. Tests/essays are challenging, and his feedback is unhelpful and grammatically incorrect. He has also been disrespectful to multiple students in front of the rest of the class. Do not take him!
He goes off on tangents is disorganized, and you can't even read what he writes on the whiteboard because it's so messy I wish he would have powerpoints at least. he relies on the students to teach and you basically get everything from the textbook. He will call out students who do or answer things wrong and is very bluntgoing to class is a bore
This is a very difficult class the expectation for a 101 level class is very ridiculous. He has extremely high expectations and give rude comments that are a bit demeaning and downgrading. Quizzes are super hard and a lot of huge essay questions that he has VERY high expectations on. Don't take this instructor if you don't have to.
If you are looking for an easy grade class to take I would suggest you not taking this one. He definitely has high expectation for his students and doesn't believe in a perfect score. There is a lot of reading and writing but I thought he was clear of what he is expecting of us.
Clear expectations. Does not give an easy "A." Requires much from his students, but the amount that is learned and retained from the material is impressive. His tests are difficult. You cannot just memorize the material and pass the tests, you have to read and understand what you read in different contexts. There is a large amount of writhing for this class. He grades promptly, and always gives clear feedback. He is organized and fair. He is very knowledgeable.
Reading and paper due every week along with quizzes. Highly don't recommend taking his class with English 101 at the same time. Gives little to no feed back on work.
If you're taking this class solely for an easy A, then you'll be disappointed. However, that alone doesn't make it a bad class. When I took Doan's class, I found a lot of the material to be interesting; Mr. Doan really knows what he's talking about, so he shouldn't let you down on the history lectures. Be prepared for rigorous in-class essays.
This professor gets a bad rap but I this class was actually quite easy as long as you do the textbook reading and pay attention in class. He is very well cultured and passionate about history. Have never met someone with such a broad range of knowledge and grasp of his subject. He is not a tough grader and is willing to help students out of class.
Overall your average history class. Many people are going to complain about bad grades but along as you actually read the book and use the study guides you'll be fine. Gives a good idea what is going to be on tests, but gets upset when students don't participate.
Overall he is a jerk. He is not super nice to students and makes condescending and disrespectful comments on assignments and if students get questions wrong in class. His handwriting is impossible to read so listen closely when he is writing things on the board. He is a very tough grader. I would definitely not like to take him again.
Unclear and shifting to start and he changes what he says repeatedly that "oh, um well yes that is also true" (but not the answer he wanted to here... despite never actually asking a specific question) Robert is a classic case of a teacher who loved learning about history that he thought "I'll teach history" He is just not good at teaching.
This class was a waste of time, I learned nothing and Doan was a horrible teacher. His lectures made no sense and they were so out of order. You couldn't read anything he wrote on the board and it was an extremely unorganized all the time. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you want to learn and enjoy school don't take a class from him.
I love history, and I find ancient history to be incredibly fascinating. So the fact that I hated this class is really something. His handwriting is so bad. It feels like he doesn't care enough to write neatly either. He seems to know what he's talking about, but has a hard time articulating it into a good, interesting lecture.
This professor was one of the few people in my life that can make me angry just by looking at them. He isn't clear at giving instructions on homework and tests and blames the student for not knowing. Very unprofessional overall, and even left the room when we were taking our final.
One of the worst professors Ive ever had. His handwriting was so illegible that I could never get any good feedback on essays. His grading is very difficult and tends to blame students for not studying. Most of the classtime was spent making timelines and lectures, both which were unuseful. Theres no homework so your whole grade is based on tests.
Worst professor I've had here. Class was all tests and just unclear and a mess.
I did not enjoy this class or professor. You had to write a "discussion post" (500 words) or reply to someone else's (100 words) four times each over the entire quarter, with four quizzes. Not very difficult at all. But there weren't any lectures or instruction from the teacher, just the textbook, linked videos on youtube, and powerpoint slides.
the class started with roughly 30-35 people. by the last 3 weeks of class there was a maximum of 10 left. class moves very fast and it is very hard to keep up with his lectures.
He is a good a really good person with a lot of knowledge about history, he gets distracted easily during lectures but always has something interesting to say. I honestly don't know why people don't like him so much. As long as you do the readings you will be fine! I've learned a lot about history from him and he is loaded with cool facts.
If you take the class on campus, you literally don't even need to be in the class to learn material for the quizzes. He gives you a sheet of terms that you need to know for each quiz and if you study those and know them well you will do fine. He's very confusing in his lectures and difficult to keep up with. Only grades are the quizzes, and final
Does not make his own lesson plans. Relies A LOT on students' synopses. My friend literally pays attention in class EVERY SINGLE DAY, and PARTICIPATES, but got a 47/50 for their Participation grade. While my other friend, however, does not pay ANY ATTENTION whatsoever and are always on their phone, got a 47.5/50 for their Participation grade.
Sure, his writing is illegible and he goes off on tangents all the time, but he really isn't a bad teacher. Tip: Print out the list of words he gives you, and as you read the chapters just take notes on those words. You'll be good to go if you do that. Also take some notes in class. If you like to be independent, this is the class for you.
worst class i've taken thus far. is all over the place during lectures. doesn't talk about info you need to know for quizzes/tests. very unclear with instructions. unorganized.
I took this class as a hybrid, with one day online. The online homework wasn't too bad, but it was relatively long. About the same as English homework. In class lectures are all over the place, he tries to make it led by students which doesn't work well. Tests are based on a list of terms he gives out, the textbook is more reliable than lectures
Worst Class/Professor I have ever had. He often gave unclear feedback and would go off topic daily. We had a lot of papers and notes to keep track of. All of the class every day was lectures and the notes he would right on the board were illegible (unable to read). TIP: follow along with the textbook/discussions and participate occasionally.
No sympathy. Grade is pretty much depends on a single subject. If you screwed up, you pretty much failed already. Lack of balance on grading is my feeling
He's a fantastic History teacher - he does go off syllabus during lecture but always to discuss something relevant to the main focus, and such discussions are still highly informative and interesting. It does require a close reading of the textbook and frequent participation in class to do well though.
Robert is, well... To be honest, Robert is a little bit weird. Dont let his baseball bat guittar playing rendition get in the way. Hes overall a nice guy, but can sometimes be rude. As long as you show up to class most of the time, and listen to his lectures, you should pass easily.
The class is extreamly difficult to get a good grade. If you put effort in you'll pass, however I don't know anyone in the class who got an A. For the first "quiz" (They're really tests) be ready to C it. Also he is very rude, and if you hand him your synopsis at the beginning of class he'll say what you did wrong out loud.
Harder A than OChem. Most difficult grader I've ever had. I constantly scored highest on most assignments, per the box-and-whisker charts, and I barely held onto my A. Numerous typos and vague instructions. Grading unclear. Will not give 100% on long weekly answers. In his defense, he knows the content very well.
As a person, he is nice, but that is all he has going for him. He goes off topic during his lectures too often for my liking. Also, his penmanship is terrible. He also is unclear about why he took points off the writing part of the test.
I really struggled to work with this teacher in terms of my learning disabilities and accommodations. He wasn't great at explaining assignments, and even when I went to him to get more information He wasn't really all that helpful. Be prepared to show up to class every day if you take this course, and drink lots of coffee.
If you rely on the teacher to provide you most of the subjects information, this class will be a tough pass. The lectures are often stagnant and boring, and tend to go off topic from the course material. If you do not have the text book, do not expect to get good grades on any of the quizzes. And if you fail the first quiz, better start praying.
Worst professor Ive ever had. Super rude and his tests are very difficult as the study guide correlates with nothing on the test. Very harsh grader to be completely honest and very strict with rules. I really don't recommend this class to anyone. I am an A student and I work extremely hard and finished with a B.
he's a nice guy but belongs in a history museum, not a classroom. he obviously knows what he's talking about and seems to really enjoy it but he's very monotone and had the most boring lectures. he went off topic a lot and it's hard to catch up if you miss a class, everything is in his lectures. his midterm/test guidelines are so vague
A very easy class that pretty much anybody can pass if you just pay attention and read the textbook. Not much to say, although the lectures are pretty monotone, just show up for an A. I have taken Doan's class twice, both times got an A. Don't know why he is so hated, one of my easiest classes.
His handwriting is impossible to read and his teaching style does not match mine at all. It was hard to learn, but he means well. Hes understanding
I really enjoyed this professor, its a hard class to get an A (94%) in but A-(88%) was very achievable. He can go off on tangents but if you show up to class everyday you will learn everything and be fine. Attendance is not recorded but you do have a participation grade. Extra credit is also offered, but limited so you need to take advantage.
I thought Dr Doan was a really good teacher. I don't know why some people complain about him. His penmanship is bad. But other than that I though he really knew the material and led strait forward lectures and classes that covered what you will be quizzed on. Quizzes weren't really easy but very fair.
If you show up regularly, and take notes on and study the lists of terms he gives out, there is no reason not to get a good grade. And he's actually pretty interesting and funny if you pay attention.
He's a great History - .I really enjoyed this class. He mixes lecture and discussions , and are still highly informative and interesting. He really knew the material and was very engages. It does require a close reading of the textbook and frequent participation in class to do well though its possible to get an A.
He is a very good professor. He tells you from day one what you need to do to succeed and sticks with it; if you put in the effort, you'll get good grades. His lectures are clear and informative. He is available outside of class and gives constructive feedback. Be prepared to read, though, and participate in class.
This professor was highly unresponsive to email (it was an online class!) and when he did respond to some of my very polite emails he was extremly rude and patronizing. He had very few assignments, and graded harshly (once giving me only 1 point out of 25 just for missing a citation in a perfectly good discussion post!)
To be honest he's not really a great teacher. I felt like I had to teach myself a lot, and his directions on assignments were not really that clear. I read by a few people that he was good but he's not. Although I'm doing fine in the class I don't have him to thank for it at all. Plus the homework is a bit much at times, It's not worth it with him.
He gives you weekly prompts and only allows a certain word count. To answer his prompts to the extent he would like it at it would take well over 100 words, but only gives his students a max Max of 700 and docs you because you don't talk about EVERY little aspect he wants to hear. He doesn't ask much from you, but good luck making him happy.
Took an online class - first 3 days he revised the syllabus THREE TIMES because it didn't match the syllabus quiz. Clear indication of how the rest of the quarter went. Strict word count, but you can't get into everything he wants you to in that word count, and he docks you for it. Online class is 100% read 5 chapters, write an essay, take an exam.
We were told to not buy the textbook and all info would be provided in chapt outlines and his resources. Buy the textbook. All info on tests is from textbook. Read other reviews here on word count, his writes, and his lack of replies to email. They are 100% legitimate. Avoid his online classes if at all possible.
I dont understand why there are so many bad reviews. As long as you take good notes and *actually* study the list of vocabulary/terms given for each test, you will do fine. I had an emergency that required me to be away from class for a week, and he was very understanding and let me re-do a very important assignment I had missed.
Robert Doan wasnt a terrible class! It was a lot of reading, but he gave you a study guide so you know what you're looking for. He repeats things in lecture that were in the readings, but I recommend reading first because he rambles if someone asks a question.
He's alright. The class is a little lecture heavy, but there's an assignment wherein you the student research a particular upcoming topic and present your findings to the class in a low-pressure, guided line of questioning. This makes the lectures more engaging. Still, it's a bit of a slog, but the tests aren't too hard.
There isnt really any homework in History 147 except 1 essay. He really likes you if you share in class by doing the reading or what I do sometimes is google some of the terms from the list he gives us that are next and then I can share about them. The tests are easy format. He gives you the possible short answer terms and places to know before
Vague about what's on exams, also vague on readings, didn't change the calendar.
Doan gave tough grades on papers yes, but there was clear instructions of what was needed to be written. There was enough extra credit on the tests to make up for mistakes. But the real important thing to keep in mind is to read the text book before class, his lectures are good refreshers but he does talk fast so its good to have prior knowledge.
lectures are boring and he is a tough grader. I kind of had to teach myself the concepts but his quizzes are easy but he grades weird. Id recommend this class if its your only option but if ur near a certain grade level hell raise your grade up. Was an alright class.
Doan is heavy and lecture and does not have much group discussion in his class. It is easy to get off task, and when you have a question he does not answer clearly. His lectures do not have much direction and are hard to follow because he jumps from place to place. He does not plan assignments on canvas which makes it difficult.
The professor outright refused to accept extra credit work that was stated in the syllabus as something a student could do, and gave a late grade on the assignment worth significantly less points than the extra credit. He ignores questions, and is very condescending when speaking to students. Move on, find someone better.
Very lecture heavy. There's not much of anything else that we do. There are no small assignments, only quizzes and exams. We cover a ton of topics in one day, attendance is not mandatory but highly encouraged or otherwise you'll miss a LOT of notes.
Lectures tend to be massive; his style is telling students to read textbooks over the weekend or the course of the week and goes over it. He's peculiar about what he wants about assignments of synopsizes and reports. He's understanding and gives many opportunities for assignments.
this professor was not good. I took his hist148 online class and omg I have never been more stressed out by a professor. his grading criteria for weekly discussions is so confusing. he grades way too hard and he's always wanting "specific details" for every single thing but he never specifies WHAT TYPE of details which is so frustrating and annoyin
Honestly, if you do the work you'll be fine but this professor won't give you an easy A
This is the worst professor and teacher in the world. He grades down ridiculously for the tiniest details. It is impossible to get a good grade in this class. I have never been worried about passing a class before. I and many other students try out absolute hardest in this class and it is unbelievable. Im WARNING you! DO NOT be in his class!!!
He has tried to blame me for turning in a paper late when he set the due date wrong. He changes the time he does his zoom meetings every. single. time. it gets in the way of other classes often but luckily attendance is not manditory. overall he is way to harsh of a grader, with a maximum word limit while berating you for not having enough detail.
He's a really solid and knowlegable teacher. He doesnt just lecture and wants you to talk but wont call on you. Lots of good video clips, and connections of thigs to modern ones. If you read most of what is assigned and do what he asks its not hard to get a solid grade. Really interesting guy too with lots of travel stories.
Robert Doan is one of the least professional and overall not great professors I have had. The class I signed up for was asynchronous in the description, however you must attend meetings. He also never responds to messages, even when urgently labeled. He gives poor grades without explanation and he assigns way more work than other history professors
this teacher is so bad but i feel bad for being mean but he doesn't care about the students and if you are a good writer her will accuse you of plagiarism and he will take points off for it even when it isn't plagiarism. he will take points off for details you "missed" in your writing but he never made those details required in the prompt.
I don't know why Doan gets so many poor reviews. If you read what he assigns, show up most of the time (not required, though) and take notes you'll do well. He is a fair grader, very knowledgeable, and very helpful if you ask. He also has a quirky sense of humor.
The professor is qualified and experienced excellently, owning high quality education about the history. His skills to explain the topic of the lecture scientifically are incredible, responding to each inquiry stated by any student. He pays high attention to the classroom participation, quizzes, homework, and the exams, with excellent collaboration
Easiest class I have ever taken. The workload is so little, a discussion post and response every two weeks. For the discussion post, the question describes the specific reading's portion you have to read, so you don't need to read the entire chapter. The quizzes is easy, if you pay attention and have common sense. Prof. replies fairly quickly,
He doesn't care about students, requires long assignments every week, he accused me of plagiarism once in a quiz and deducted points, doesn't respond to emails.
He really know about a lot about the world and its history. He had lots of pictures and stories and showed great videos. You do have to read the book, but the class was good and pretty easy.
Doan is a good and knowledgable teacher. He knows alot about the US and its History (and his beloved hometown of Philadelphia :). He is a clear lecturer and fair grader. You do need to follow directions and read what he assigns. But easy class if you do.
Just finished his 19th century US History class. He's a fair grader and gives good feedback info. He lists what you need to know for quizzes and papers and follows it. Allows extra credit possibilities too. You do have to read the assigned readings, though.
Doan's on line US History of 1800s was pretty easy. You do have to read and post weekly assignments. But quizzes and grading were easy if you do that and keep some notes.
Dr Doan's on line class was pretty good. All readings are posted and not too long. His grading is more than fair and he really knows his stuff.
Really knew his stuff from 20th century US history. Does so much travelling in US, his stories seem real.
Dr. Doan is passionate about US History and that is visible in his lectures (only have to attend 3). His class was very interesting and the course load consisted of readings and videos with a single response in a discussion each week. The quizzes and tests were multiple choice and short response, which could be prewritten. Overall a great class!
Was overall a good class, was asynchronous with a zoom class each week you could join (had to join 3 mandatory). Almost ran out of time on a few quizzes and had to write very long, essay like discussions for homework, but wasn't graded too hard on those as long as you included all the info asked for. Was very communicative however and nice.
Dr. Doan really knows his History if US. Being an online class, you need to read the posted readings to do well. But if you do, and watch the videos and read Powerpoints, you will do well.
No too much to say, except that I'd liked him and the class. He was very helpful to me in emails, and the class was strait forward and not hard.
He's a good prof and knows alot about History. He reaches out to you if you miss things and gives you a chance to make things up and turn them in late (with some points off). The class isn't too hard
Doan's on-line class was easy to follow and informative. He is also a nice, helpful guy if you emailed with problems. I enjoyed the class. He must be getting better as older reviews are bad, but newer ones are good.
Took him for a summer Medieval World class. He's very fair and flexible, though he does expect you to read and do assignments. Definitely recommend.
I took him for World Civ. Really knowledgable and willing to work with you. You have tp read, and quizzes aren't super easy, but if yo read and study a bit they are pretty easy. Weekly assignements are the same way.
Just took him for World Civ. I recommend him. He give lots of good feedback and pinters, as well as lecture notes. Lots of good videos too. You just have to be sure to read and post things on time.
I liked Doan for 19th c. American History. All the reading is posted on line, and its not really that much. If you do it, you will do well on weekly assignments and quizzes. No tricks or pop quizzes.
For US History III you don't need to buy a text as all reading are posted. They aren't that long but you do have to read them to do well on quizzes and assignments. Dr. Doan is also very knowledgable and helpful. He is really passionate about the subject too. I recommend him.
History 103 of the Modern World was a good class with Dr. Doan. All the readings and assignments were well laid out. He is a fair grader that gives quick and useful feedback. If you do the reading and take a few notes you should do well on assignments and quizzes.
In this World Civ class on-line I learned alot because Dr. Doan takes the time to give lots of feedback on your answers and tests. The text is OK, and as long as you read it and other things posted, and take some notes on them, you should have no problem doing well.
Dr. Doan's class is pretty good. He is a caring teacher who will give you good feedback. He's knows American History well and definitely loves teaching it. Just read the assigned stuff and take notes and you will get better than a B.
This was a good on-line class about US history. There was an on-line textbook that was pretty easy to read and use. If you read it and take notes on the terms he gives you to know, you should do well. Dr. Doan gives good feedback and is quite willing to give you a second place and understand your problems.
Am taking this World Civ class now and really enjoy it. Dr. Doan is very knowledgable, but also flexible and gives good feedback. You have to read the book and other posted stuff. Just read it and takes notes and you'll do well in his class.
Doan gave clear instructions for assignments, and lists of terms to study for quizzes. There was enough extra credit to make up a bad grade or two. But do be sure to read the posted text book and take notes. These go with his posted lectures and videos well. Maybe not an easy A, but its doable, and an easy B for sure.
Dr. Doan is very knowledgeable about History, and in this case 20th c. US. Text is easy to read and posted online so don't have to buy a book. You have to something almost every week, but if you read and take notes, especially on the terms he provides, you should well. He is also flexible, and gives good feedback and extra credit.
I took Dr. Doan for 19th c. Us History. I really liked him. He helped me alot. He know History well and is a fair grader.
Just took him for World Civ. since French Rev. You do have to buy and read the book, but if you do you should be fine. He gives good feedback on Answers and quizzes, but does expect you to careful with your writing and be complete with info. But otherwise a good and easy teacher.
Dr. Doan's class was good. Youi have to read a little bit, but if you do that, take some notes, and watch the videos you should do fine. You have to write a few essays based on readings, and reply to some others. The quizzes are mostly T/F, with a couple short answers. Just take notes and prepare a bit.
I thought Dr. Doan was very knowledgable on 20th c. US History. The readings were good, though you do need to read them to do well. He is nice and gives good feedback. I learned alot too.
-discussion (answer+responses) are 45% -every week you have to either answer an assigned question or respond to someone 's answer -there will be 3 mandatory answers+4 mandatory responses, if you choose to do all the answers+responses, the one with the least points will drop -for tests they are only true+false questions+one short response question
19th century US class with Dr. Doan is a good class because you don't have that much to read, though you do have to do what is assigned. But you gives you terms to know for papers and quizzes. He also has good videos and gives good feedback. He answers emails quickly and is fair. Getting at least a B is easy.
Dr. Doan provides your required readings on line, so you dont need to buy a book. There are videos to watch. You have to post either a longer answer or a short response each week (can skip a couple) and as long as you do readings you should have no problem. He grades fairly and quickly. He is a nice guy who replies to emails and concerns quick too.
Unlike the last person, I thought he was a good teacher, and I got an A. You have to read and follow directions on the questions. For quizzes you need to study the list of terms provided via readings, Powerpoints and video lectures. He isn't a super easy grader, but he is very fair and gives good feedback. The last week is for extra credit too.
Honestly, I started the semester hating this professor. He’s actually really understanding though. If you get over 50% in his class you will pass. I’m normally an A student and am ending with a B(-?). The class says asynchronous but you have to go to at least 3 meetings and it affects your grade which pissed me off as I couldn’t go to any.
I am taking him now for History 102 -- Middle Ages. I like how organized the class is and all the Modules. he gives really good feedback comments too. You do have to read the book and other materials and take notes though. But its also pretty strait forward.
I am taking him now for Ancient World Civ. I really like him and he is very accommodating and flexible. He is a fair grader too. I don't know why the low score, but all the recent ones are good. I guess he's changed his ways over the years.
I took him for Medieval era World History this past spring. I agree with the last couple posts. I found him fair and flexible, and the material good and the text decent. The only reason I won't give a 5 is sometimes the text didn't align exactly with the Powerpoints and videos, but pretty close once you get used to it. The videos were good too.
I really liked this guy. He does expect you to read and be prepared, but he's also very flexible and compassionate about issues you might have getting work done. He also obviously likes to talk about Medieval World History!
I have no clue how to feel. Not flexible at all but not heartless or unfair about it. The main thing that gets me is his demeanor, it makes it hard to do the work if I'm being honest. He writes in the most condescending tone, if that doesn't bug you it's a fine class. A lot of reading but not necessarily hard a fairly hard grader but not impossible
He is a really nice professor. He has a reading assessment and quiz twice a week, the quiz is only 10 questions based off the reading. There is a discussion every week, don't fall behind, but he does allow to submit up till the last day of the quarter, without any penalty. There's no tests in the class, just the two quizzes per week. Take notes!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! I repeat... DO NOT TAKE IT! I took this class for my first year of college and it was horrible. He is a tough grader, and doesn't explain much about the course material. His quizzes are poorly made as he isn't very tech savvy. The amount of discussions you do is based on your last name. They are 800 words each.
He is a horrible teacher. He rarely teaches you the material and just talks about it and expects you to know it by the end of the course. His discussions are 800 words long and rarely gives out perfect scores. He hasn't given a single 100% on any of the quizzes or discussions when I took him. Do not take him if you're looking for a good grade!
Do not take his course. Plenty of times I tried to reach out about assignments, only to get the most illegible responses. He never gives out 100% on anything even if you're doing all the work and more.
One of the most condescending professors I've ever had (But I don't know if that's just how he comes across virtually). Incomprehensible feedback, never gives 100%, and lots of work that feels purposeless. Weekly reading, 400-750 word discussions, 3 quizzes with weirdly worded questions, and a final. The only way I learned was from the textbook.
The class had very little lecture aspect to it, with learning coming almost entirely from readings. The class was graded on weekly assignments, 4 quizzes, and a final. Not terribly difficult, but the feedback he gave was repetitive, average, and at times unclear. Overall a fairly easy and very passable class with mostly clear expectations.
Do not recommend this class, he nitpicked a lot of things for grading. Overall, I knew this class was going to drop my GPA substantially, therefore I had to drop it. Didn't understand what he was trying to get at when giving me feedback. Instructions were honestly unclear and he just has insanely strict grading criteria. Doesn't help you learn.
Awful experience for the first few weeks, he didn't give instructions very clearly and the quizzes on the material were challenging to understand. Would purposely word the prompt on the quizzes to make it harder to understand. Would knock off points or mistakes that didn't happen. Tough experience had to drop it in order to not affect my GPA
I literally plagiarized a line from the reading he assigned and he said "well, I don't know if that's quite true". He will do anything to keep you from getting an A. Takes off points for not doing something that WASN'T EVEN IN THE GRADING CREITERIA. Worst I've ever taken. low work, easy B though if that's what you're looking for but A students run
This professor stinks always talkin about random subjects and not on topic makes us do extended parts of past assignments after the due date. He puts huge assignments and grades them in a weird manner. I would never take this guys classes again if my life depended on it. He also has a weird obsession with corn.
Online class is easy generally, he never gives A's though. His quizzes are what I think are bad. There were very weird questions that I would never take notes on, and he never told us what the quizzes would look like. Discussions are generally east but I would not take again due to quizzes and final dropping grade a lot.
Bro this PROFESSOR IS ASS CHEEKS DO NOT TAKE HIM, he literally was going off on me because I missed one class. worth noting I had perfect attendance in his class before this. Besides that he just isn't good he talks for too long making things harder than they need to be. He also never gives A's. Don't take his class do yourself a favor.
Whelp, He talks way too much to the point you get way too bored and he grades so tough on his answers and reply rubrics. his quizzes are also pretty annoying. he expects you to read 25 pages of textbook every week too. it's absolutely horrendous! u also have to type up responses to the text. overall 1/5
there are so many readings i am not ok anymore and he rarely gives out full points (he usually takes off 0.5 if u submit a good discussion post) quizzes r ok if u take notes tbh the class is straightforward and mainly self taught (readings + answer prompts + at home quizzes). the class system itself isn't that bad, the workload is just a lot
This guy stormed out of class because no one could answer one of his questions, he interrupts you talking when you try to explain your answer, and his grading is ridiculous. He doesn't give full points, no matter how good of an answer /reply. He said, "You can get the gist of what they are saying." when I told him about the terribly formatted docs.
Racist old white dude never gives full points and always yaps about random subjects. I love history and was excited to take this originally but at the start of the second week all my hopes were crushed. I gave this class my all just for an A but he never gave full scores with rigged tests, horrendous grading, and high point assignments.
I took this class for high school graduation requirements. This was possibly the worst teacher possible I could get. Never gives full marks even if you write 1400 words. He is also rude and gives no useful or not enough information for the homework or tests. Avoid at all costs if you want an A.
Never picking a teacher without checking their rating again. Thats the only thing I got out of this class.
NO just NO
Who even let this man become a professor?!
My first quarter at Bellevue college and this class made it 10 times harder. The teacher doesn't care about your effort, historical facts, or anything other than what he is thinking of. He never makes what he wants to see clear and gives very rigged test questions
So much reading and writing, he gave good feedback but still have to do a lot to get minimum passing grade. Didn't lecture on material until after discussions about it were already due so you have to teach yourself all of the material, also he constantly wasted class time talking about sports
good writing matters for this class, along with providing accurate info from readings he provides. gives list of terms to know but some would not be in readings or very little would be said about terms he said you needed to know. some questions are weirdly worded in discussions and quizzes but overall not too bad. gives good feedback.
I finished the second week of this class and am already done. I can barely stay awake during his lectures, and he yaps for an hour about nothing. As soon as I heard from him that he almost never gives anyone an A I got scared. I just dropped the class after seeing all of the reviews. Not to mention the lectures are terrible and it's 85% reading.
The readings are hard to read because they are photocopied from a book but all the homework is based off of them. The lectures are worthless because everything he tests on is so specific but you are graded on participation throughout the course so you have to go. Overall he's not horrible and you can get an A in the class it's just annoying.
Not too bad. Reasonable grader. My only issue is that modules are updated at odd times. I ended up missing a quiz because he updated the module pretty late in the week and it was due on a Saturday. Glad it's over but also relatively painless. Only reason I got a C- and not a B/A is because I hate history and did the absolute bare minimum to pass.
Be prepared to read 3 textbooks, an essay every week, and inaccuracies in coursework. As well as very unorganized lectures and lack of grading criteria.
He was really nice although he is a harsh grader his class is pretty easy
I should have read these reviews earlier! if I read I absolutely withdraw immediately. Don't Ever take this teacher! DEFINITELY THE WORST! Even if you attend every class and are never late, and almost answered qutestions in 50% class, your participation points will still less than 80%! And he will only give your participation points in the final.
I wish I read the reviews and dropped out sooner. The online class is discussion heavy, almost never giving out an A. The professor posted the best student each week which felt demotivating. The textbook was hard to read as they were photocopied. He is One of the worst teacher I have ever had. He sets you up for failure. HORRIBLE!
I cannot believe this man is a professor. He doesn't know how to conduct an online course, provides terrible scans of the textbook that you have to read, lots of reading, bad lectures, he is very condescending and writes super long announcements. Expectations are unclear and nothing every makes sense. Avoid this prof. at all costs.
Professor Doan has a specific teaching style, but engaging with it can be worthwhile. Stay focused, use the textbook, and consider tools like unstuck AI to supplement your prep - it helped me get through the challenging content and assignments.
not a bad person and 100% knows all the material with passion, just is very vague in what's needed of you, gives horrid scans (i'm not kidding, literally partially cut off and unreadable) of what you need to read for assignments, & is one of those teachers who never gives students a 100, and will be like "great answer, but ..." then give you 25/30
Be prepared for poorly scanned textbook readings, the way Professor Doan has it set up is you have a post and a reply (from the previous week) due every other week, based on your group. Tough grader, I believe he is one of the "An A is for beyond perfect work" type of professors, he is vague with what he wants to see in discussions in the rubric
Do NOT take his class, it is not worth it! He makes the students teach the class for him. He doesn't give full points on anything. All of his emails/announcements have spelling/grammar mistakes and he refuses to explain what he meant when asked. The questions for assignments/tests are incredibly broad yet he will always find something you missed.
Many exaggerate here. If you don't analyze readings and fully answer discussions, you won't get a good grade. This class is tough if you dislike weekly readings or history in general. Otherwise, you'll be fine. Pro tip: Cover nearly everything from the readings in discussions/replies, and you'll get the A he claims is 'rare' in his class.
Awful teacher. The way the class works is that each week you have a reply or an answer depending on your last name. The problem is that the textbook reading you're REQUIRED to read for your assignments are horribly cropped. The teacher is also one of these "an A means perfect work" teachers.
Robert Doan openly shows that he is condescending toward his students. He blatantly accuses his students of not being familiar with the material in public announcements during the course. He then also stated that nobody in his class will ever get a perfect grade on any assignment. His graded is completely subjective that follows no criteria.
The harshest grader I ever had and it is not good at making his expectations clear.
Well the workload in this class is extremely manageable with there only being one or two assignments every week, it is nearly impossible to get an A in this class. He's the type of professor where an A means perfection. I usually received the highest grade in the class for my discussions, which most of the time was between an 85 and an 87%.
This was my first quarter at Bellevue College as a Running Start student. He doesn't give any A's. He allows you to have one page of notes for quizzes, but whenever he feels like it, he'll rip off the bottom half of your notes because there's "too much". I'm writing this before my final, and this is the most unprepared I've felt before a final.
