Good teacher, really helps since it's a hard course. Always willing to answer a question even in a class of 100.

Not a good professor. He knows what he is talking about but does not know how to teach. Jumps from one topic to another too frequenty. I wish tulane had another professor to teach this class.
I'm not going to lie, the class is hard, but if you put the time into studying its managable. His tests are easier than you think they might be, but don't underestimate them. Good luck!
Very confusing lectures. He goes really fast and doesn't write things down. Or if he does write it down, he says the definition first and then writes the word on the board. By then, I forget what the definition is. :-) Tests are 70MC but there are a lot of calculations.
I found his lectures to be confusing and while he says that he's open to questions, if you do ask a question, it had better be a good one. He gets annoyed easily if the question isn't up to par. I'd take it with somebody else.
Hard course but good professor. Very helpful with questions outside of class. I wish more teachers were as generous with their time.
All his lectures are posted online, and he's great one-on-one with clearing up questions.
Go to class, read the book, and be a bio genius: it's cake.
If you read and study you should be fine really. But the teacher can be a bit condescending at times making him unapproachable outside of class.
His lectures are off the wall! he rambles on about stuff, half the time it's not relevant to the topic or you just have no idea what topic he is discussing. if you like order, don't take his class. he also can be very condescending when you ask questions.
Gives quizzes to assert his power as a professor, not for learning. His tests do not reflect the material taught in class or the material presented in the readings. Doesn't stress a hierachy of concepts, but expects student to identify important material on own. absurd. Dry humors comes of pompous
I'm a senior Cell Bio major, and Dr. Dotson is the best biology teacher I've had at Tulane. He is very obviously brilliant; the people who say he is pompous are just bitter about grades I suppose. I studied class notes, and powerpoint. This is what he tests on. Text only for reference. Got A's.
His lectures were not structured at all. He did not use power point for my class. I think that he is a very smart man, but a terrible teacher. He comes off as being very arrogant.
Dotson is really smart and pretty laid-back, and though he's a bit arrogant I thought he was funny. Tests are all MC and pretty general. Gives takehome openbook quizzes that ought to boost your grade. Make sure to pay attention in class!
I think he will end up bumping your grade if you go to every class in the end. The best advice i can give anyone taking this class is take the best notes you can possibly take and then just look into further detail about what you took notes on. I would not recommend reading all the chapters - might
Very clear instructor. It's easy to understand him. Doing good on the quizzes are a must to help your grade. Tests contain no surprises.
Dr. Dotson does not post PPT notes on Bb. That factor alone is bad. And is it just me, or is it weird how he ends his emails with "-Dr Dotson." I wonder if he refers to himself as "Dr. Dotson" instead of just using "I."
Lectures and wack but you have to go class because sometimes there are pop quizes and he takes role. If you take this class make sure to get old tests and quizes because he reuses questions a lot.
If you are looking for an easy A, do not take Dotson. The tests are hard. But he is nice, and usually curves the tests pretty well.
As previously said if you want an easy A dont take him, but if you want a professor that knows his**** and will teach you well then take his class. Its important to take good notes and look over the book. If you do that the tests arent too bad. Just dont ask dumb questions or he will make you look like an idiot.
The class is a challenge. But he's a fare grader and always curves up! Going to class is a MUST to do well and if you don't understand something he will go over it with you in or out of class until you get it. He also likes to call on people in class so if you're shy don't wear bright colors! Gives quizes online which are easy.
Worst Professor EVER! More concerned with his own social life than his students or posting notes. Self-admittedly doesn't come to class prepared. Do yourself a favor and take someone else.
I hated the way he teached.
He's not the easiest man in the world, but he speaks english which is a HUGE plus for a science prof... His quizes are just like the exams.. he has a dry sense of humor, and can be not so pc somedays.. he's also very awkward, but very smart. If you pay attention he will tell you what to study... and if you can get copies of old exams, your good...
The class isnt too difficult, just look at old tests, he repeats a lot of questions from old tests He is not very respectful of students, so dont be alarmed.
Try to take someone else for this class if at all possible. Instructor is condescending and assumes a lot of knowledge for a 200 level class. Lectures are boring, but if you memorize EVERYTHING on the power points, you should be okay.
Dotson is funny, and a nice guy (he does get impatient with questions) but unfortunately teaching is not based on that alone. It is possible to get an A in this class (I did not) it just requires alot of work. Pay attention in class, read the powerpoints religiously, and read the book. I would not reccomend him if you have a choice though.
Goes off on tangents that you don't think are importnat, but then tests you on them anyways. Can be condescending, doesn't like questions.
He is well educated but talks so monotone you fall asleep and can't learn. If you go to talk to him he just goes off in tangents and expects you to just "get it" He has 10 chapters on each test, and expects you to do hours of homework each week. This is a 600 level class named 205.
This was hands down the worst class I took at Tulane. Dr. Dotson.. we get it.. you are a smart person! Too bad you are not good at sharing your knowledge in an effective and respectful manner. He offered no power points, his lectures were unorganized, and if you ask a question, be prepared to be made fun of in front of the class.
Professor Dotson is the most arrogant teacher I've had in my life. He is completely condescending, and if you ask him a question, he will ridicule you. If he asks you a question in class and you don't know the answer, he will ridicule you. He seems to enjoy flaunting his intelligence of the subject material more than he likes teaching students.
In my opinion, you couldn't ask for a better biology teacher. He gives crystal clear explanations and is a fair grader. He can be condescending, but I think it's just his personality. He's actually hilarious in a dry sort of way. I'd recommend reading the book, but you could probably get by on just the lectures and powerpoints.
Dotson is a great guy. he knows what he is saying and he teaches it in a way i could really understand. he definitely isn't for everyone, but you will know the material. tests are multiple choice, not super easy, but not terrible. take him. he is entertaining if nothing else.
I took Prof. Dotson for 3 classes - CELL 205, CELL 301, and CELL 411. It's true that he's very intelligent, but just because his class is intense and he covers A LOT, doesn't mean he's arrogant or condescending. If you read the text thoroughly and take good notes, you will learn A LOT from him. The best biology teacher I've had.
He isn't condescending! If you think that then you just can't take a joke, when he "ridicules" ppl u can tell he is just playing. sometimes. see that was a joke too but some of u won't get it. he really is soooo smart its ridiculous. its fun to send him off on tangents haha. and to watch when his entire face and head turns beet red for no reason.
hilarious! teaches and explains very well! fair tests. nice drawings. again, hilarious.
This class was sooo frustrating! Dotson makes you feel like the biggest idiot. He lectures off the top of his head so they don't match up with the textbook. He also begins with really advanced material, then works his way to more simple concepts. He assigns worksheets but doesn't return them until after the test. You will learn, but suffer!
Dr. Dotson is a great genetics teacher. He explains the difficult topic of molecular genetics well. He is hilarious and energetic. He does not follow the book so you must go to class and take careful notes.
Dotson is an average teacher. It's not his teaching that makes the class avoidable, it's his attitude. He is condescending. He thinks he is more intelligent than he really is. His English is poor, but he criticizes students for their wording. He insults religious people, usually Christians, at least once a week. And so on. Take Dr.V.
Brilliant professor, but tests are tough. Lectures kind of go in circles. Text book isn't adequate for the course, and he assumes a lot of prior knowledge. In office hours, he's pretty helpful but makes you feel like an idiot.
Dotson is very knowledgeable in his subjects. Unfortunately, he often expects the same for his students. Lectures/notes are vague and keeps no clear outline of what is essential for students to know. He is haughty as well as often blatantly offensive, and requires you to work much harder than would be necessary. Take the other guy. Any other guy.
The man is a complete a**. Class is lecture based with some questions thrown out that he expects you to know, even though it is a 200 level course. He is very arrogant and pompous during lectures. Not very helpful when ask for help. Tests are multiple choice and very hard.
I had Dotson for CELL201,301,and 422. Most of the courses are difficult. If you can take good notes then you'll do fine. He does trick questions,IQ questions, best answer questions, essay questions if the class is small, and all multiple choice if there's 70+ people. He is condescending, but interns are treated far worse by professors.
Lectures without any visual aid material--just stands there and talks. There is no clear direction or hierarchy of organization. He is condescending and rude. When studying for his tests you must know all of your 1) lecture notes 2) his posted notes that have nothing to do with class and 3) the book inside and out. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Dotson is an excellent professor. Some say he's rude, but I think he's hilarious. He takes attendance but class is not mandatory. It's an easy A if you just study the material. He puts powerpoints of his lectures online after class in case you have to miss one. His test material and grading are both perfectly fair. Anyone who complains didn't try.
This man is phenomenal. People tend to mistake a dry and dark sense of humor for condensation, but if you think of it, he doesn't point out anything as dumb or absurd that isn't. Someone said his English isn't that good, but I've not heard anything out of the ordinary, other than his correct use of the word "data" as always plural. Great professor
He's kinda rude in a lecture setting, but he is also funny during his lectures and one-on-one he's actually really nice. He's tests fair and it's not hard to do will in his class. I would suggest going to class, especially during the 3rd/last unit, because he explains stuff way better than the book, and it'll be really helpful for the final exam.
Brilliant guy, great professor. Takes some work though, his lectures/powerpoints don't necessarily follow the textbook and leave out a lot of what is in the textbook (not like Dr. V). Tests are fair, helpful with homeworks and class material. Take him and enjoy it
Great professor. Incredibly smart. Expects intelligent and particpant students in his class. Yes he does poke fun at some things, but honestly, its what makes his class great. Definitely take his class if you want to learn.
Went to office hours once and was so uncomfortable. You definitely learn a lot in his class, but he doesn't do well with "simple" questions. Make sure you study and are prepared for class. Quizzes every week are relatively random is questions
i would say the book may be unnecessary, more detailed than what is tested so you could get away with class notes and his posted slides on blackboard. hes hilarious which makes class great.
Great professor! I highly recommend!! But make sure you buy the textbook and read it!!
totally manageable but if you don't do the reading you're not going to do well. Missing a class will hurt you a lot bc he goes over the reading and adds a lot of his own notes which are frequently on his tests. Keeping up with the material is key and definitely find a study group! Also make sure to study well in advance for tests and youll be fin
One of the best professors I have ever had. If you attend lectures and keep up with the readings in the book, you should be fine. I also suggest making outlines for each chapter. You learn a LOT in his class, but he keeps the material interesting and fun. If you go to office hours, he will explain any concepts you don't understand.
He is such a jerk! Try to take someone else if you can, but good luck since he's the only one that teaches it! :(
Dr. Dotson is one of the best professors in the cmb department. His socratic-esque teaching style and high expectations, combined with a genuine willingness to help facilitaed a fantastic learning environment. Only problem with this class is fellow student complaints about him and their lack of ability to appreciate a good teacher.
Great professor but not for those who skip or sleep in class. He goes by the book, which he DOES enforce reading by the way. He doesn't announce his quizzes, and they are on the lecture he'll give after it and are the same as test questions. Also, doesn't cover everything in his lectures, so the book is mandatory.
Lectures are very interesting. He is very helpful, although depending on the person it may take some getting used to his personality. Prepare to study a ton. Take notes in lecture and learn the book. He gives pop quizzes on the readings before he lectures on them. Tests are difficult. study hard :] but really, it's a great class!!
Does a good job making the lectures interesting, and is very helpful at office hours. Tests are very hard though, even if you feel ready
Awesome professor! lectures are very helpful and interesting. attendance not mandatory but basically necessary. a LOT of work but relatively easy A if you go to class and keep up with the readings
A very difficult professor Intro to Cell and Molec Bio compared to Dr. V. Does not curve tests and is just overall a very difficult professor. Apparently going to office hours helps though. Regardless, try to take Dr. V first before anything.
To the person who said it's an "easy A," I disagree entirely. Definitely NOT an easy A. Definitely a great class though. Attendance is a must and so is reading daily. I got an A in Dr. V's intro class and found this to be 100x times harder. His questions force you to apply knowledge; it's not simply spitting out memorized material. Over-prepare.
Very hard class, but I learned a ton. Information from both the dense readings and his lectures are on tests. Tests are all 50 MC questions. Some questions are easy, some are totally out of left field. Dotson has a WEIRD personality and is pretty terrifying, but is not as cold-hearted as he seems in lower level classes. Good luck!
Dotson is one of the best teachers I've ever encountered for his Socratic method of teaching and humor to boot. The man is brilliant. Succeeding in his class requires a lot of effort - reading and acquiring a thorough knowledge of the material. Visiting him during office hours is really helpful.
The information is interesting, but he only tests how well you can cough up information. Critical thinking is hardly required, but that doesn't mean it's an easy course at all. He expects you to know the textbook back and forth. He doesn't go over much of what is on the test in class, and does not adequately help you on what to cover.
Tests are next to impossible to get an A on...Studying is essentially pointless. A lot of the questions had NOTHING to do with what we learned in class. Most of the Homework is very difficult as well...even with the textbook and what not. Each test is cumulative and builds on the last one. VERY hard class
Very interesting professor! However, his tests are pretty hard, and the homework extremely involved. Do the reading before class and answer questions when he asks them in class. As long as you do that, you should be fine. If no one answers, though, he gets upset and assigns extra homework. So be ready to speak up during class.
Dotson is slightly terrifying at first, but gets better. The tests are multiple choice and detailed. The homework is very detailed and time consuming. He will randomly call on people in class. This class is a large time commitment.
Dr. Dotson as an educator is nothing, if not fair. He has high expectations of his students, and assesses their performance in an unbiased manner. He speaks clearly and effectively, with a specificity in terminological usage that demonstrates his thoughtfulness and avoidance of ambiguity. He is interesting, cultured, funny, accessible, and kind.
Dotson is a fantastic teacher with a unique style. He does not use powerpoints and is mostly talking throughout the lecture which sounds intimidating at first but will end up teaching you a lot. His tests are very hard and require a lot of studying but none of it is unreasonable. Not bad if you read the chapters pertaining to each of his lectures.
Really liked the class and Dr. Dotson takes some warming up to (he has good intentions on the inside). However, be prepared to spend a LOT of time on this class- I didn't and it easily showed. Very useful knowledge gained. No powerpoints. Tests are HARD but EXTREMELY FAIR. write down EVERYTHING he says in his lectures- VERY important.
I think he is a good person but the class is extremely hard. If it is not required for your major DONT take the class. If you do have to take it i suggest going to the tutoring center because they are really helpful. His tests are hard and they become progressively worth more. They are also the main component of your grade so you need to do well.
Dotson's a fine teacher, but perhaps the most unfair and difficult test grader I've had. Tests were highly experimental, and knowing the facts offered little help. Tests averages consistently in C-D range with no curve in class. Also, brutal, brutal homework that was worth basically nothing. Very intimidating man and class. Hardest at Tulane.
Dotson is one of the most disrespectful teachers I've had a Tulane. His very high expectations for students leads him to be condescending and sometimes almost rude. That being said, he is a brilliant man but he doesn't set his lectures everyday so he may forget to talk about something that's on the (very difficult) tests. Read the book!!
Honestly, one of the most demeaning and disrespecting professors Ive had the (un)pleasure of taking. He takes forever to get back to you and when he does he is so insulting. I love the field of biology but people like him make me reconsider it. Dotson, science is about exploration, not shoving information down throats.
Though the class was difficult, Dotson is hilarious and made learning the material enjoyable. Definitely know your methods...
Professor Dotson does not follow the book, his lectures are whatever he would like them to be rather than following any set plan. Anything he says is able to be test material, ANYTHING. All this exams are accumulative - he will throw in a tricky question from chapter 1 on the third exam. He's rude and discouraging, this is the most hopeless class.
Not going to lie, this was the hardest class I've ever taken in my life. Having said that, I learned more here than in any other class. Dr. Dotson is brilliant and an excellent teacher, he's just a bit of a tough grader and the material is difficult. Also get ready to apply your scientific knowledge like never before.
His lectures are extremely disorganized. Very difficult class
Dr. Dotson is one of my favorite professors at Tulane. He really cares about helping his students learn the material. His tests are hard, and focus heavily on interpreting experiments and material from the textbook. However, he is really nice and is more than happy to go over any material you may not understand during office hours.
He is so disorganized. He could benefit from powerpoint presentations during his lectures because he is all over the place. He could actually be a good lecturer if he added some structure.
If lectures with no powerpoints/slides, being assigned complex readings only to have like 30% of it on the actual exam, tests with short answer questions on things only briefly mentioned in lecture, and studying an entire weekend to get a bad grade sounds frustrating, don't take Dotson. If Dr. V Cell1010 was too easy for you, take this class.
Dotson was not very nice and would pick on people who did not know the correct answers to his questions. What he would talk about was not usually even on a test. If you have to take this class, try to get another teacher, because Dotson is not very helpful. Although he is good with office hours.
Dotson cares about students and is very intelligent, but teaches material from a very detailed cell and molec standpoint rather than as a big picture. It can be really tough to rectify the detail he covers with the information you may be learning in a lab. Tests are application based and fairly challenging. UNDERSTAND the material, don't memorize
His lectures are really hard to follow because he talks really softly and he also doesn't use any visual aids except the chalkboard so you really have to struggle to hear what he says. He gives a quiz every class and there's two homework assignments a week - not too hard but time consuming. Tests are REALLY hard though.
Dr. Dotson is a great professor since he explained things well. He did not use slides or textbooks but exams were all short answers, which were challenging to answer if you do not keep a good note or share study guides together as a group. HW is 50 percent but he does not give partial credit. He was helpful during office hour, and he did curve.
This class was very challenging and required daily studying. Dr. Dotson comes across rather rude but actually really cares about his students. Each test was cumulative and very conceptual. To do well you really need to understand each concept and be able to explain it. I was skeptical of taking him but I ended up learning a lot in his class.
Do the reading before class and you'll be fine. He gives a quiz every class, so there are plenty of opportunities to bring your grade up if needed. Drops your lowest quiz. Gives make-up quizzes if you're sick/whatever. Interesting, brilliant, thought-provoking teacher. DO THE READING.
Dotson overall is probably a genius. Super intelligent guy but his social skills are lacking. His class is dense and he basically goes through the entire textbook. Make it a priority to do the assigned readings those are crucial for the quizzes. Great professor but you need to do your work in order to keep up.
Really smart, quite funny but not everyone's cup of tea. Hard to get a read on. Gives regular homework assignments that are graded "for excellence." Likes when people are engaged/ask questions/have done the reading. Lectures go all over the place, so write everything down. But he does make it all very interesting (even if it's a little complicated)
This class has made me hate biology. The information is so interesting however the way he teaches the class makes it torturous. Half of our class dropped within a month and the rest of us struggled to get anything higher than a 70 on tests. Lectures are beyond all over the place and he talks about whatever he feels like that day. Find another prof
The lectures were very unclear and disorganized. There were no powerpoints and he lectured the entire class by drawing diagrams on the board and then vaguely talking about them. The textbook was very dense and he did a terrible job of making it clearer. He makes you feel like an idiot for asking questions or not understanding something. Awful.
Alarmingly disorganized class, homework assignments are sporadic and difficult weekly quizzes comprise a huge portion of your final grade.
Knowledgable and intelligent but also terrifying. He will call on you throughout the lecture and will make fun of your answers. Tough grader with homework and sometimes switches up the way he grades quizzes. He isnt afraid to fail anyone.
This professor said that he was not afraid to fail any student regardless of how hard they try. Quite possibly the worst prof I've ever had. Find another professor.
Dr. Dotson did a great job in making me study an incredible amount for his class which resulted in getting a good understanding of biology but I had trouble reading into the experiment-derived questions he put on tests. He's great in office hours esp if you demonstrate a genuine effort & interest in the material.
I was nervous going into Dotson's class because of his reviews on RMP, but I had nothing to worry about. Dr. Dotson wants people to do well in his class, and will always give you the resources to do so. He is incredibly nice, funny and brilliant. Prepare for alot of reading, and you'll have to work your ass off for your grade, but its worth it.
Robert was easily the WORST professor I have ever encountered at Tulane. I have personal issues with this man. Rob is incredibly lazy and makes his TA's do everything in terms of grading. He also strongly believes in the "flip-model" style of teaching, but he does not have the teaching skills to make it work. Someone fire him and remove his earring
We have a flipped class, but he never posts the asynchronous lectures... He straight up didn't give us any lectures or quizzes (as promised in the syllabus) before some tests, and I did poorly. He straight up said "I'm too stressed to make a quiz before your test" but doesn't cut us slack
Here's what to expect with Dotson as your prof (actual situation that happened) In class... Student: "Will cancer be on the exam?" Dotson: "No no it's too complicated we definitely won't go into it." *Takes test and it's 40% of the test* This happens. Literally. Every exam. Totally fine cutting himself slack but refuses to do the same for students.
this professor is AWFUL he does not teach us a single thing and expects us to take 6 tests over the course of 3 months on 20 chapters of material. This class is impossible and I have to teach myself everything. SOMEONE FIRE HIM HE IS SO AWFUL THIS CLASS IS RUINING MY LIFE. he is the bane of my existence
Avoid! I've never before had a professor who literally did not teach. He said at the start of the semester that class time is meant for asking questions and reflecting on the material, so he doesn't lecture during that time. He did say that he would post asynchronous lectures, but less than half of them are posted and our final is in two weeks.
Dr. Dotson is the worst person I have met in my academic career. He does not have any lesson plan and comes to class very unprepared. He then puts us in groups where everyone is clueless. He has posted lectures for 2 tests which were also posted the day before. The remaining tests have had not lectures despite a reverse lecture being promised.
Dotson is one of the least accessible profs I've had. Never answers students emails, will not tell you what you missed on tests, super unclear about test material, etc. Incredibly dry lectures that do not help at all and honestly leave you more confused. Your mental heath will be in the trash after this class do not take him pls avoid at all costs.
Not for you if you like very structured lectures, but if you like general lecture topics with flexibility to explore specific ideas, he's awesome. You definitely get out what you put in. He's very knowledgeable about the material & everything related to it. He can be grouchy, but it's usually for a good reason, & he also has a good sense of humor.
He spends class time on information impertinent to the class material, and says that he will post relevant lectures later, which he never ends up doing. You essentially teach yourself the entire class through the book, and each exam covers a ton of material. He doesn't provide any practice or review material himself.
I usually take RMP reviews with a grain of salt and give professors the benefit of the doubt, but never have I EVER regretted that more than genetics with Dotson. Simply put, he bullied me into not coming to class. He belittles students who answer questions wrong in class, then gets even more angry when no one answers his questions. AVOID HIS CLASS
Professor Dotson is the hardest professor I have ever had at Tulane. I would not even call his classes lectures because he spends the whole time putting us in groups to discuss things we were not taught or he rambles about things we are even not tested on. I taught myself everything for this course. This class was harder than organic chemistry.
Worst professor I have ever had. We had 6 exams in 2 months that covered a LOT of tough material. The test questions were randomized so not everyone was tested on the same material. I taught myself EVERYTHING-- his "lectures" just talk about random stuff he feels like talking about and he talks SO SLOW. He is also so rude and a bully. So awful
Ok heres the thing. I was signed up to take this class with 2 other professors before tulane switched it. This man was my literal last choice. I have not gone to class in person or via zoom since september because it is a complete waste of time. I have taught myself literally everything. All i have to say is: dear god.
Professor Dotson is HANDS DOWN the worst professor I have ever had. He does not discuss anything relevant in class so you basically teach yourself enormous amounts of material by reading the book and hoping what you focused most on is what's on the tests. Avoid at all costs. I only took him because they switched the other teachers out.
Worst professor at Tulane. During a COVID semester, he not only made students self-teach themselves around 20 chapters of material but he also bullied students into not going to class by mocking them and making them feel stupid for not knowing the answer. Said that he would post lectures for the content but only posted 3 lectures the whole sem. BAD
Gave 6 tests and expected us to study for them every single day during the stressful COVID semester. Each test contains randomly generated questions taken from a test bank, which means there is no consistency between tests. Your individual test could end up unlucky and you could get the hardest questions compared to your peers. Hes also just rude.
Dr. Dotson is not a good professor. I wouldnt go as far as saying hes the worst professor at Tulane like others have said, but he definitely isnt the best. The flipped classroom teaching style is not beneficial to us AT ALL. I stopped attending lectures because they werent helpful. I feel like he is a nice guy, just not the best professor.
Dr. Dotson is undoubtable a tough professor - but, he pushes students and holds them to high expectations because he really wants them to succeed outside the classroom. Speak up in class, participate, go to office hours. He truly cares about students and wants everyone to learn. He makes you work for it, sure, but a very rewarding class in the end.
Don't take this class unless you somehow have enough time to basically read through an entire genetics textbook by yourself. Dotson is rude, unhelpful, and unorganized. Do not rush to take this class unless there is a better professor. Seemed like he hated teaching this class as much as his students hated taking it.
Dotson expects you to read the assigned textbook chapters in order to do well. It is a lot of reading, but if you do it and memorize it, the tests will not be too hard. Class is 98% worthless in helping you do well in the class. Class is super test heavy w some weekly hw assignments that are open note. This is probably the hardest TU Genetics prof
Was part of the COVID semester-- had 6 tests (2 drops), 3 group projects (1 dropped) and chapter reading and interpretation quizzes. The tests were 10 questions on Lockdown-- so grades dropped quickly. Lecture was useless-- he does flipped classroom. Just read the book and you should be good.
Do yourself a favor a do not take this man for any class ever. This is by far the most stressful class I've taken at Tulane. It made my orgo class seem like a breeze. He made us take 6 tests throughout the semester. I basically never stopped studying the entire semester. He did curve my grade, but it was like 1%. Avoid at all costs.
Not a very good use of the online format, as did not post any lectures but expected us to learn everything from a textbook. Endless silent breakout rooms.
Look, if you're taking genetics, you're not going to be spoon-fed like any freshman level class. Lectures are content heavy, Dotson does have a habit of digressing from the textbook though. He tries his best to answer questions and uphold your interest in genetics. Pray you have Patrick as your SI or just get ready to learn the textbook thouroughly
Avoid this man like the plague. He takes attendance, but his lectures are useless and insanely boring. Be prepared to read... a lot. He doesn't even come to class with notes. He just talks about whatever pops into his mind that day. Genetics is too difficult of a class to teach yourself. Any other prof is better by miles.
This class definitely is interesting & forces you to learn a lot about experimental design & data analysis. Lectures are interesting as well. However, exams can be brutal & have high expectations for students. Definitely the hardest course of the CELL major. The Lodish textbook is fantastic for teaching the content though. Make sure to read it.
The hardest course of the Cell major but it definitely doesn't have to be. Prof Dotson expects students to teach themselves almost entirely from the textbook with little input from him since lectures have little to no organization. Homeworks are assigned randomly and with no warning, and test questions are almost impossible to predict. Beware.
The worst class I've taken. ABSOLUTELY NO STRUCTURE, no objectives. Barely any assignments. Hard questions from board exams. Tested on material not taught in class. Given 3-4 DENSE textbooks with no other help. I was so excited to learn pharmacology, and it is such a shame that this professor is such a horrible teacher. DO NOT TAKE FOR ANYTHING.
I've never met a teacher who doesn't teach. If a flipped classroom is your thing you might enjoy his class. Otherwise get ready to memorize a text book that won't even help that much. Tests are always a surprise and lectures are always super random. I would wait to take it with another teacher if you want to have any kind of social life.
I really enjoy Dotson as a person but as a teacher his Genetics class is absolutely miserable. I have never had to self-teach myself anything as grating as this subject before, and engaging with him in or out of class is insanely complicated with a subject like this. Take it with literally anyone else.
He has difficulty staying on topic and you will be expected to understand most of the content before lecture. He does not care about your grade, and he didn't know my name by the end of the semester despite me being one of the most active students in a 14 person class. We started with over 20. Take someone else.
Difficult class that requires reading the textbook, showing up to lectures (both for random topics that will be included on exam and for a good curve). There is such a stigma around Dotson that the small class size creates a community that has been my favorite to be a part of at Tulane and good discussions between a few people and the professor.
grade based on 3 tests total (including final); reverse lecture style...my advice is to try to take other professor available, but if that's not an option then attend class to receive exams so that you can study them (questions are reused).. he did not post grades on canvas, so come in person to get exams... good luck, and I hope this helps someone
Attendance required, but he was very mean to students. If I could describe this professor in two words it would be "adult bully". I don't know many grown people that are bullies (usually that sort of thing is reserved for children), but he is definitely one of them. I guess that's how he gets his kicks. Not a good teacher.. Not even a good person.
I was very worried going in to Professor Dotson's class because of ratings on this platform. However, he is very funny, caring, and knowledgeable. He wants his students to succeed. Do the reading and supplemental information he gives you and you will do well.
I was terrified going into this course. Professor Dotson's rating on RMP are scary and unfair. I am not the smartest person in class, however Dr. Dotson breaks down complex concepts in digestible ways. I am sure that the stigma that surrounds him comes from 1) The difficulty of the class and 2) His style of humor which is very dry and sarcastic
Dotson seemed to be a nice man outside of class but in class he was did not make it enjoyable at all to ever be in his lectures. He never used visual powerpoint to read off of and often times would either cold call or when someone would raise their hand, if they got something slightly wrong he would either make fun of you or belittle you.
D1 Yapper. Loves to talk on and on in class about random things without much bearing to the material you will be tested on. If you are unfortunate enough to be stuck with him, SI sessions will be your savior. His lectures are genuinely useless.
Avoid this man at all costs. He never stops talking about things that do not matter at all to the course. Cold calls on everyone at least once in the class and then embarrasses them if they don't know it. Tests are worth 72% of the grade and there are only 3 of them (are all cumulative). You can walk into every test with confidence and fail.
Probably the most difficult person I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. Students are scared to look him in the eye, let alone answer questions, and if you get them wrong, you'll be ridiculed. I spend more time in this class with my head in my hands in sheer disbelief than actually looking at the board. He's smart, but not a nice guy, at all.
Likes to bully students. Lectures often deviate from the textbook a lot. 3 exams -- 2 of which are only 20 multiple choice questions, one is 8% of your grade and the other is 24% of your grade. Final is 40%. DO NOT TAKE DOTSON
Dotson's class is no walk in the park - lots of reading, studying, and engagement required. However, utilizing resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook can help make this challenging subject more manageable.
This class is horrific. He grades off three tests and some in-class discussions. Tests are an absolute nightmare. The other section gets to use notes in exams while he uses lockdown. Seriously, do not take this class and this professor. He is an absolute nightmare.
You have to pay attention to his lectures as he often pulls random facts from them to put on his tests. You also only take three tests that are only 20 questions multiple choice so if you miss just three questions, you are already at a B. definitely go to his office hours. He is a cool guy to talk to, but not so cool to listen to for an hour.
Let me start off by saying that I've never written a review about a professor before. But this class warrants a review. I can not express enough how awful this class is. If you have other options, please take those. This class is built on three exams (no curve) and some in-class work. Averages are 60-70%. Take the other professor, save yourself.
Straight up the worst professor i have ever had. He gives no guidance regarding what is on exams that make up practically your whole grade. He also provides arbitrary grading for in class discussions. VERY RUDE to students who have simple questions. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
AVOID AVOID AVOID Dotson is the worst professor I've ever had. Take literally anyone else. He is rude, unreachable, and and confusing. He refuses to give guidance and is extremely rude to students when they ask clarifying questions. The mode grade in his class was a C. The mode grade in all other sections was an A. Do with that what you will.
This has been the worst class I've taken at Tulane. The professor is dismissive, teaches by reading from slides, and offers no meaningful guidance. When students asked for help, he was rude and unhelpful, giving vague or no answers. This class wasted my time, energy, and money with zero support.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Wait or take Dr. V. THIS IS THE WORST CLASS AT TULANE. I read the reviews and was like people are probably just mad they did not make an A. I WAS SO WRONG. He does not teach, he does not care about you. He just wants his paycheck. Worst professor I have ever had. Get ready to be bullied in class-it just happens.
AVOID. JUST DON'T DO IT TO YOURSELF. Worst person, worst professor, worst educator, worst helper, worst sympathizer out there. Tulane should NOT have this man employed.
It genuinely pains me that students go into this class with a love for science and leave with a hatred for it. He makes every biology topic miserable from day one. Be prepared to learn nothing from him, everything from yourself, and still fail every test. He has no sympathy towards anyone and has no business being anywhere near a classroom.
Terrible teacher in all aspects. Has no sense of organization, no clear plan during classes
He will make you feel dumb if you do not understand the topic that he has been teaching for years in a matter of minutes. The only important thing is the final two exams.
Not everyone's cup of tea; some take his deadpan sense of humor to heart. Flipped classroom during lectures, so arrive having at least skimmed the readings or watched his video lectures that he provides on Canvas. His classes are pretty entertaining though. He wants effort from his students; care with your actions, and you'll do well.
Honestly, don't take cell1010 with Dotson if you didn't take AP bio. You are basically teaching everything to yourself. I had to read the textbook thoroughly and take intensive notes for the tests, everything in the textbook is fair game. There are no slideshows during his lectures, he just talks and talks. In addition to that, he is just rude.
I have never felt more distraught, discouraged, or have my confidence drop as much as I have in his lectures. He can be funny and has provided resources to help students out, but his teaching style makes you feel stupid. I questioned my intelligence every time I've stepped into this man's lecture. Good luck; take Dr. V if possible.
If you took AP bio beforehand the course is a breeze, but he does like to pull specific examples from his lectures. If you take good notes in his lectures you'll be fine as thats what the exams are primarily based off of and are not terribly difficult.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He makes people hate science. The light from my eyes disappeared after taking this class. He is so mean and will cold call you and make fun of you in front of the class when you don't know the answer. If you want to be pre-med, I strongly suggest you not take him because you will want to switch careers after. :P
Hated going to his lectures, which are pretty useless.
One of the hardest courses I've ever had to take. He does his best, cares about students, is good at explaining difficult concepts, and goes above and beyond in his office to satisfy your curiosity. I like his dry and sarcastic sense of humor. BUT his lectures are disorganized, tests are difficult, and unpredictable. Be ready to read the textbook.
So he likes to pick on people in class. Lectures are terrible and class is reading heavy. He expects you to come into class and basically know all of the content for the class.
READ THE TEXTBOOK AND WATCH HIS VIDEOS. His lectures are going over a few thing in the unit, but expect the whole unit in the test. You need to understand the topic and put it in different scenarios. Take Dr. V if you can. His classwork are similar to his test and check with him to make sure they are right.
I think these reviews are harsh. If you do the readings and assigned quizzes (take home), you will be fine. Just be ready to study in order to do well. Most people in the class have taken AP Bio, and do well. I didn't, applied myself (not to the fullest extent), and still did well. He will cold call, so be prepared for class and do the readings.
doston makes this class (which is already rly hard) even harder. his idea of a lecture is him standing infront of his talking for an hour abt wtv he wants with no slides or visual aid. hes a sweet guy in office hours and wants his students to succeed but the exams are so so hard and the class is graded by so few things its hard to do well
oh you don't believe in god? pick one and start praying. he is so demeaning and mean and genuinely will point at you in the middle of lecture and laugh at you. just take dr. V and save yourself the prayers. or do the reading, watch and record all lectures, study before class + after class and be satisfied with a B. cell is already hard, save urself
