great teacher and VERY easy lecture! lectures right from book
Entire grade in course relied on (2)essay-only tests! Unfair!
Best prof I had at Mason
pretty good teacher. always had funny stories to tell. pretty easy grader, too. i got a B in the class.
Tells lots of stories and is full of information
Best government teacher

Best teacher at Mason. His lectures are very well structured and are straight from the book. His study guides are extremely helpful. Great professor
ok teacher, not very enthusiastic
I've NEVER had any replies from him the countless times I've emailed him & called him. He was the hardest teacher I've had-smart but confusing- speaks quickly & scattered- expects law school level work from you. Was 30 min. late for finals!
Professor Dudley is a good teacher, he's the chair of the Political Science departmant. His class is challenging, if you want to learn then this is a class for you. Not easy, but not impossible to get an A.
Well this prof wrote the book so u can tell he knows his stuff, but he grades u on 2 tests, an essay and a final. He gives study guides that are very helpful, but time consuming to fill out.
If you read the book, you don't really have to go to class because he almost recites the book word for word. He's interesting and seems enthusiastic about what he's teaching though. He knows his stuff and if you want to learn you will.
Besides the fact that he chairs the entire Govt department, he is by far the smartest and most interesting government teacher @ Mason. He is full of facts and stories and willing to answer questions.Do the readings and listen up in class and you'll be great. he also gives extra credit options as well
His class is one of my favourities. Even though I fell asleep a couple of times in class, his lectures are worth to listen. His lectures are very much based on the book, even some examples. I guess it is because he wrote the book... If you miss lectures, read the book... very helpful!
He is the best prof. I've ever had. He is really heplfull and understanble guy. He usually does not reply the emails or messages but let me give you clue make an appoinment with him and yu will see how gentelmen and helpfull guy he is.
Hands down the best professor in the Gov Department and definitely deserving of the chair position. I take all afternoon classes and took 422 with him at 9am just because he was teaching. He made the Constitution interesting--and he's full of stories.
This class is very easy as long as you go to class and scim the chapters. His lectures are almost word for word the textbook, but there are somet things you will miss if you don't do both. He's extremely smart and interesting, he knows all the scandals of politics, fun class!!
He's a co-author of the text, it's easier to follow his lectures, and helps if you read the text. If you are a government major, pay attention to his lectures, as some of his materials will be useful and relevant all the way to your synthesis class(graduation class).
Very good! First exam was easiest and it gets harder from there! His exam teach you to "build-a-case." This class is not for whiners or the fein of heart - do the word. Make an appt with him and talk to him. He'll be available but you have to do the footwork - for everything in his class. Not an easy "A" and informative. Great experience!
Awesome class. He brings so much interesting background information that all those things you vaguely remember learning in history classes suddenly have life breathed into them. It's not an easy class. Studying for his exams is imperative.
You can tell Dr. Dudley loves govt and his job teaching it. Take this class, it's fairly easy and is interesting...but do go to class bc lecture is the test
Well if you take notes and go to every class then this class is easy. He is a good teacher, his lectures are good, and exams too. He has total 3 exams but the first 2 exams he uses it in his final exam too. He gives you study guide for every exam and he has 1 paper too.
Worst teacher ever...his exams are ok, but he always sends us the study guide a day before the exam and when you get the study guide its totally off topic from the exam questions. I went to every class and hes confusing, a bit conceided and close to the end of the semester he is about 15 minutes late to class. Dont take gov with him!
Whoever commented before me is just WEAK. Dudley is an amazing teacher, and knows his stuff. The class is difficult, but Dudley makes it managable, he's a great teacher, and government kiddies should take him
He is an O-K teacher. There is a LOT of information that you need to take in for the exams and the final IS cummulative. The important thing here would be to actually go to class and take good notes so you know what stuff is going to be covered. But when it ocmes to actually talking to him to get help or gettin in touch with him, he's no where.
Gov Chair. One of the best professors at Mason. Has real passion for the subject and great knowledge. Don't take class if you dont' love gov and the Constitution. If you truly love the subjects mentioned above the class is amazing but is still difficult. I studied my ass off and managed to get an A which i was thrilled about so it is possible.
No need for notes/class if you can get ahold of the past exams. Just do well on the exams (memorize the old ones) and write a decent paper and you'll get an easy A. Trust me. =P.
Great professor. As you long as you keep up with the readings, you're good. Tests come from the book. Always helpful and interesting lectures. Funny guy too. You'll enjoy this class.
Dr. Dudley is quite easily one of the most interesting professors I have taken at Mason. He is very knowledgable about the Framers, and the Constituition, understandable considering he's the Department Chair. This class is hard. It requires a lot of studying, but its not overly difficult. I'm usually a B student, and I got an A in this class
very interesting class. Prof. Dudley is very informed on everything and also very interesting. It is a very easy class. Make sre you attend his lectures and take notes and you will get an A
good guy

I really dreaded taking this class... I never thought government was interesting. Apparently it is, when you have the right sort of professor. He made class engaging and often funny. I liked the way he talked about government in a story form rather than a list of facts to memorize.
tests are hard
This class was hard. If you don't plan on doing the readings, don't bother taking the class. He wrote the book, so pretty much all the test questions come from there. He's a nice guy, but very hard to get in contact with..3 tests + you have to go sit in at either the Senate or the HOR and write a paper on it. overall, class was O-K.
Dr. Dudley is easily the most interesting professor I've ever had at Mason. I can honestly say that his Govt422 is the only class that has truely challenged me yet at Mason. He is extremely knowledgible and extremely fair. This class is very hard. He is very accessible and very entertaining. I recommend this class only for serious govt students.
Great professor. I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He explains everything and uses great examples. And often times very funny. Tests can be hard if you don't take good notes and read the book.
Boring and rambling. Gets off topic easily. Tests have info never seen/talked about in class. Has even made up words before that have appeared on tests. Started talking about congress one day, ended talking about the post office. avoid him.
He's boring as hell. I've only been 5 times and I still have a B. Easy class if you know anything about American government.
I went to class, tried to take notes because he was so boring, and did not do well. He has VERY hard tests. You have to really beaware of the material that he mentions in class. So, dont skip. He's the dept chair of govt so he doesnt really care if you like him or not. You can never get ahold of him or ask him a question. TA did the work & was nice
I hated this class. His boring lectures made me fall asleep in class almost every time and if you lose track even for a minute the whole lecture seems pointless and confusing. He also tends to wander off in his lectures. The exams were easy, but i hated this class so much that i didnt even bother studying for them..AVOID HIM! NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL
well i thought i would like this class but i ended up sleeping in EVERY lecture. i did like his humor (when i was awake) but taking notes and reading are important for the exams. the essay we had to write was eassy i gon a 40/40 and mine was complete crap. i wouldn't say he's horrible but i didn't like it as much as i had hoped.
only about 1/10th of the class ever actually showed up to lecture. huge auditorium, but basically empty. 2 midterms, final, and essay. not easy tests, just pay attention. tendency to ramble/ go off subject/ tell interesting stories that lose focus and become boring.
Really boring lectures, fell asleep many times, which was not good because he tests on both book and lecture-mostly book, but still. There were about 3 tests, 1 essay, and 1 final. The essay was reallly easy. He emails study guides, so study them! He wrote the book- so he knows wat he's doing, he's just not too enticing.
VERY BORING LECTURE CLASS....but I went no more than 10 times and got a B-. There are 2 midterms, an essay and a final. Tests are kind of hard, mostly book material but some from his lectures. Essay is really easy. If you want a class that you can skip this is it, but be ready to study a lot before the tests!
Just awful. Boring, crazy, goes off on odd tangents, etc., etc. His exams aren't hard if you can manage to gather enough willpower to pay attention for the hour fifteen that he lectures. Or, you know, just read the book, because that's what the exams are on. Not the lectures. Don't take this class. Not recommended at all.
Class is lecture style that is extremely boring. Class attendance is not mandatory but most of the test questions come from the lecture. Book is rarely used. He goes off topic alot and it is hard to decipher what is actually useful information and what is not.
He's quite the sartorialist. I think he's the best dressed professor I've ever had. His lectures and stories are fun if you pay attention.
He wrote the book which is just one huge pile of biased pro-liberal nonsense. He's flipped out of students before. Try you hardest to NOT take this guy as your professor
Not to bad. Lectures were kinda boring but full of detail that WILL BE ON YOUR TEST !!! Goes off the beaten path sometimes but he is a great storyteller. Good class, you will get lots of information.
made american government fun. most classmates say class is boring but his lectures are stimulating if you can pay attention and understand. he gets really excited about american government. also wrote the textbook, so when he talks it's real compatible with the book. recommended.
I've never felt inclined to comment on this site before, except for this exceptional professor. He is enthusiastic and interesting; easily the best prof I've had in all four and half years at Mason. Don't take his class if you are lazy, whiny, or have no interest in American government, otherwise you'll do fine with a little effort.
Very uncaring rude professor. I love the subject but attending his class was boring he goes off topic Lot. He is not helpful If you ask a question he makes you seem dumb or you don't know anything I stopped going to his class and just read the book on my own. Don't pick him for your teacher unless you want a hard time.
Yes his lectures are pretty boring and hard to pay attention to, but there is a lot of good information in them. Some people say they just read the textbook and it's good enough, but he covers a lot more in his lectures than the book does and that IS what the tests are over. GO TO CLASS!
Great guy, ok class. Doesn't use an outline, just lectures at you, but he makes it entertaining. However, he can be hard to follow. If you are the kind of person who learns best by listening, then this is the class for you. But if you rely on visuals, avoid the class. 3 tests: 2 midterms & a final. Not too bad if you read the book.
Dudley literally wrote the textbook so he really knows what he is talking about. Book, lectures and study guides are all pretty similar which makes the tests a lot easier. Also, he holds review sessions before each test. He can be boring and repetitive sometimes but overall he is very good.
Prof Dudley is relatively a nice and a smart guy, he likes to go off onto side topics and tell stories but tries to keep the class humorous and fun. he has 3 tests and a paper thats really easy, but have to go to some kind government related. You dont really need to go to class but you do need the notes from him and the book is relatively used alot
I had a some trouble with being able to pay attention in class. He's a great lecturer but isn't really interactive in terms of keeping the class's attention. Basically talks about what's in the textbook since he's a coauthor of it. Really nice professor with 3 tests including final and a government related paper
There are no slides to go along with his lectures, so be prepared to take notes of your own. His exams are extremely straightforward and he emails students a study guide ahead of time. He holds reviews sessions outside of class- Go to those! They are so helpful. 3 exams and 1 paper. Gov't was never my strong suit but he made it easy and enjoyable!
hard to follow. no slides. don't recommend if you don't like going to class.
Do yourself a favor and don't take this class. Literally the worst class I've ever attended. When it comes to tests, you're on your own. He asks specific questions and wants you to write an essay on them. You basically are given a big ass book and not really told what you should know.
I would not have this professor again. His lectures are not that helpful and the majority of the time they go off topic. There are review sessions but again not that helpful. He doesn't go over the study guide in its entirety. There's one paper also where you have to go to a government hearing and write about it. Overall not impressed.
boring lectures, he goes off on rants and no one knows what he is talking about. Gives a review guide for tests but it is information never seen/discussed before. Also has review sessions but he talks quiet and fast so you dont have time to get the information down then when you ask questions he treats you like you are stupid. Find a different prof
He's pretty good at lecturing but its hard to follow because he doesn't use any slides to go along with it. The only thing I hate about his class are his tests.. the questions are way to confusing and for every question there are always two answers that could be true.. I have worked very hard in his class and barely have a B
Attendance is mandatory only if you want to pass this class with a good grade. He only lectures, no power points, and no extra credit. Grade is based off 2 midterms, 1 final, and 1 paper. His study sessions weren't really helpful. You're pretty much on your own. His class is difficult, take someone else if available :(
Extremely disorganized! Poor communication btw TA and his, which leads to missing tests and misinformation. Lectures are a ramble, sometimes completely off topic. He has some good insight, but also TMI. Does not use blackboard, so pay close attention to your e-mail and class announcements. Consists of three/four tests and a paper.
Both he and this class were ok. I just wish he used PowerPoint slides instead of lecturing the whole class.
First, he is a really nice guy and will answer any question you have and take time to speak with you. The class however is very hard. The lecture is not aided with a powerpoint, so it is an open discussion format that goes off topic a lot. The tests are the hardest I have taken so far at GMU. It takes a lot of work to get above a C+ B-
He is a pretty great professor. He very clearly knows what he is teaching and very rarely looks at his notes. However, he won't use power points and occasionally uses a whiteboard, though that isn't always clear to read. The class will be easy if you already have knowledge of the US Gov't. Write the paper, it's one of the few grades you will have.
Dudley is very knowledgable. Lectures can be kind of boring because he goes off on tangents. I recommend going to class by doing that I got an A. Read the book and do the study guides. As long as you do what you're supposed to you'll get an A easily.
Lectures are long and boring. He doesn't use any PowerPoints. You just need to write down whatever you think is important which is so hard because he gets off topic so easily. Like he was talking the president and then he started talking about toilets. In the other hand, his tests are really easy. He emails you the study guide which is helpful.
lecture class, no home work, just readying, study guide and question session before each exam
If you don't like going to lectures, this class isn't for you. Having said that, you should still go to his lectures cause he is an AMAZING and entertaining professor. There are 3 papers & 3 exams. The paper definitely helps for the exam. Exams are essays- given 3 questions, answer 2. Keep up with the reading, it's a hard class, but worth it.
Attendance is not recorded but the exams were only manageable because of case reasoning discussed in class. Professor Dudley made Constitutional law a fun experience- he basically animates lectures with stories. If you enjoy a good segment on the History Channel every now and then you'll like this class. If you're not an avid reader- listen to lect
Awesome professor!
Dr. Dudley is not what you'd expect in a graduate seminar. It is kind of a story time mixed with the books assigned and papers. This is not to say its a bad class, I find him really enjoyable and passionate about the subject. If your interested in U.S. Govt and like a good story; this is your man.
honestly, great professor. all class is basically story time, but he tells it in a way that you remember. I wish I could just sit back and listen, but the downside is that most of class is spent furiously typing/writing everything he's saying. Solid choice though, no complaints. 3 exams, you write 2 essays in each exam.
he just talks the whole class about who knows what. gets off topic really easily and DOES NOT answer emails. I have sent him multiple emails and STILL haven't gotten a response. go to class and listen to lecture or you will not pass! the textbook is NEEDED if you want to even pass. unfortunately, i have him for TWO classes in one semester.
Non-accessible outside of class as there's a 90% chance he won't respond to your emails. It's incredibly difficult to take notes because he goes so off topic that its hard to really ascertain the gist of his lecture sometimes. The textbook is crazy boring and he only grades off 3 exams and gives you zero hints of what its on besides "your notes".
His lectures consists of him speaking to the class, so it's hard to write everything down. There are no PowerPoints of anything of the sort. He tends to veer off topic a lot, making the class seem uninteresting. I would suggest doing the study guides as well as reading the textbook. The only grades are 2 exams, a paper and the final.
This class would be better if it were recorded and sped up 2x. All classes are entirely off the cuff lectures, he has no notes and uses no technology. This means tangents and a lack of a roadmap lead to his exams not clearly reflecting what is taught in the class. The book is responsible for perhaps 20% of exam questions at best.
I definitely would not take him again. This class talked about a lot of aspects of the law that I learned/ have been learning in other courses, but he does not like you pulling from outside sources on tests. He goes off on tangents so much throughout class it makes it so hard to focus and understand what is truly important. Avoid him if possible!
I had Professor Dudley during the Spring 2020 semester, aka during the COVID19 pandemic. I commend his efforts to switch to online, since it wasn't easy for anybody, but he is NOT good with technology at all. He's inaccessible outside of class and rarely responds to emails. He also doesn't use PowerPoints or anything. His lectures are all stories.
