Awesome class! He is very clear and really knows about the subject! Answers every single question! :) Even though attendance is not mandatory, it is better if you go to every single class.. because the exam questions come from his lecture! I really enjoyed his class! And if you have any question, just ask! He is really nice!!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He's a good teacher but his exams are too demanding. Grades are based on 3 exams, 10 HW, and 1 final. Exams are mostly SHORT ANSWER. He gives you a study guide of 50 S.A. questions and picks 17, which are the exact same ones on the exam. Takes 3/4 sentences to answer each question fully. Way too much study, take someone else.
If you are interested in oceanography take his class. Professor Ellis is a very intelligent person who knows his material. Always willing to help you out and his lectures are very interesting because he explains them so simple for anyone to understand. Learned so much from him. Be ready to be challenged. Not an easy class
I really liked Professor Ellis. His class was extremely fascinating and surprisingly fun. He answered every question with enthusiasm and even took time after class to help you or discuss various ocean related topics with you. He was very personable, friendly, and extremely understanding. His subject was not easy by any means, but he taught it well.
Nicest guy ever and very well traveled. Has a great passion for what he does and knows EVERYTHING! If you love the subject, take his class. 3 tests-100?s mult choice, 10 current events, and 1 cumulative final. His tests are pretty dang hard but he's always available for help. although its a hard class he's a hard guy to not like!
Professor Ellis teaches Labs in the field(no book) Exellent way to learn! Extremely knowledgeable and helpful during and after class. This is not an "easy A". There is a quiz every class based on the previous weeks field trip.If you love the marine environment and really want to learn, he's your man! If you just need a lab, choose someone else.
He is a rad guy! I learned so much in his class and really enjoyed it. He is real about what you need to know and learn. Not only is he passionate about what he teaches, he has the experience to back up what he says. Take his class
Hardest teacher ever! I thought it would be a fun class, but his tests are next to impossible. I did learn a lot of cool things, but getting a good grade was a struggle.
very hard teacher. studied for hours and could only to manage to get a low B or C
I loved this teacher! You could just tell he loved his job and had passion for the subject. He taught well, but rereading in the book helped a lot. His tests are EXTREMELY difficult so you really have to study and forget about missing a class or zoning out or else you'll most likely not score well. Highly recommend him though.
Oh my goodness, I kind of fell in love with this professor. Not only is he incredibly smart, he's funny, shows Finding Nemo clips and surf videos in class (very important tbh), and often lets class out early (not that I would mind listening to him for the full time). I've always loved the ocean, but his class made me want to be a marine scientist.
AWESOME TEACHER!!! Has a great passion for what he teaches, and is always willing to help out! Very friendly and loves to share information and answer questions! You will have to study hard, but you will learn so much! Super interesting!! One of the best teacher's at OCC!!
Definitely one of my favorite teachers I've ever had. Really knows what he is talking about and even goes off track sometimes to tell you some really interesting stuff. His lectures are great and filled with cool slides, personal experiences, and tons of intriguing information. Offers office hours to help, and really cares. Great guy, very smart.
Wow. I took his honors class, and it was extremely difficult. I've never taken an honors class before this and I never will again. I'm a generally good student, but this class killed me. All tests are free-response and you have to be EXTREMELY specific to get anything above a C.
Professor Ellis is an outstanding instructor. In the honors section, he expects you to be able to explain concepts to show your understanding instead of just memorizing key terms for a multiple choice test. He is an overall great guy, and is a very fair grader. He is not vague; you will know what you need to study for the 4 exams.
Amazing teacher, very thorough, great guy. Would love to take all his classes
Professor Robert is the hardest professor I came across at occ. I took his online summer class and we covered 18 chapters in 8 week and he assigned too many assignments per week. You can barely get a good grade in this class + the course materials were way too expensive, wasting money on oceanography is not the best option unless its your major.
I took this course online, but Mr. Ellis had an optional meet and greet before the course started which was really helpful! The course is a lot of work, especially since it was online, but he was REALLY helpful with any questions I had. This is NOT my major, but it was an interesting class.
Robert Ellis is an amazing professor. He loves his job and field of study so much and you can tell just by the way he teaches with great enthusiasm. His energy in the classroom is so positive and makes you want to be there. His lectures are amazing, no words, just pictures. Great class, great dude. You wont leave his class without loving the ocean!
ROB IS THE BEST PROFESSOR ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH. THE END.
I learned the most about the world and the universe that I never expected from an oceanography course; he's an amazing teacher. I would recommend this class to anyone with even a hint of curiosity who is just looking to learn more about the world and the way it works.
love love love him. he expects a lot out of tests, they are short answer/essay, but he gives you all the material and chances to prepare for them.
By the far the best professor you will ever take. He is amazing and I wish I could take this class again.
Robert is an amazing instructor. If you have a passion for Marine Science, take his class. If you dont, take his class, and you will. I can promise you that. Amazing amazing amazing teacher. I have learned so much and I have enjoyed every moment spent in his classes.
I took professor Ellis for Intro to Oceanography and absolutely loved his class. He's so smart, very interesting to listen to in my opinion.. And for you ladies out there, he's so charming. I would definitely take the class again, he made me super interested in the ocean and all that is involved with it. Study hard and show up to class!!
Professor Ellis knows his stuff, he is really helpful but his test are hard you really need to study for his exams and go to his office hours to pass amazing Professor you will learn and will enjoy the world in a new way, but it is a tough class.
One of my favorite professors at this school. He knows what he's talking about. Not only is he very knowledgeable in the subject, he can pretty much answer any question any student asks and even relate it back to marine science. He had me wanting to switch my major! Loved this class and actually wish I could keep taking him. Highly recommend
Lectures can be long. Material can go over your head if you doze off or get lost. You MUST take notes off what he is saying, his power points are just pictures. Tests are hard, the study material he gives you is a lot of information to review. He's very helpful and homework is sparse and easy to keep up with.
Very knowledgable and passionate about the subject. I would recommend reading before class so that you know exactly what to expect and how to take notes. His PowerPoint slides are only pictures and he verbally explains all his points so make sure to pay attention! Assigns current event papers that are due before class begins or it won't be accepted
Robert Ellis is an amazing professor. His lectures aren't the usual, his slides don't have bullet points, so you need to follow along pretty well to write down what you need. He gives you the option to do little homework assignments and has review questions to go along with the tests. The tests are pretty difficult though.
Rob is one of the best teachers I've had at OCC. He is so knowledgeable about the ocean and makes the class fun for anyone. The tests can be challenging, but he offers study guides. He does talk fast and does not have power point slides so I recorded the lectures. He curves grades in the end! Super awesome class and a highly recommended teacher!
STAY AWAY if English is your second language. In this class there are terms and words that you never heard before (not even in movies nor the streets). The professor is smart but obviously that is not enough to pass the class.
He shows that he really cares about what he's teaching
Robert Ellis is amazing. He's passionate and really knows his stuff! The exams are rather extensive so studying, reading and showing up to the lectures is key to passing! Not too much homework so the class is easily manageable. I would take him again or recommend him for this subject for sure!
Prof. Ellis is very passionate and knowledgeable on his courses. Although, if you are not a marine biology major, I do not recommend taking his class. His lectures are difficult to understand. Offers extra credit once for 5 points and is very punctual and not understanding of you. No answers for review sheets and hardly correlate with the tests.
Prof Ellis knows his stuff. He is passionate about the ocean and wants you to share his passion, too. Even if you aren't majoring in marine science, he shows you how it relates to everyone and every major. He makes complicated concepts easy to understand, you just need to pay attention. His tests are hard, but take good notes and you'll be fine.
One of my favorite professors at orange coast. He is a little bit of a tough grader but doable. Has great experience in oceanography and does very interesting lectures
Wouldn't take again. Did not receive help when requested little disappointed
Mr. Ellis' lectures are so interesting! He makes the boring stuff fun and relatable. 4 (100 q.) multiple choice exams. 1 finals that only helps your grade. He is very funny and patient. He really wants us to understand the material so he will go over things until we understand! Take him for oceanography. I promise you will not regret it!
I never thought that I would love and enjoy Oceanography so much but I would totally do it over. I aced all 4 exams so I got to skip out on the cumulative final. His lectures are very interesting and you can definitely feel his passion for the subject. Take the study guides seriously and take good notes. Don't ever miss class!! Highly recommend!!
He's very nice and caring but if you're not good at tests I would not recommend. Your grade relies heavily on how you do on your tests. Even with constant studying I found them very difficult. Note taking is a problem too. Everything is verbal, wish there were words on the board.
STAY AWAY if this is not your major! Seriously. His tests are insane you have to practically rewrite the textbook back to get an A (without plagerizing) Very passive aggressive, has favorites, and what he talks about in class does not show up on the tests. I thought it would be a fun 1 unit class but I was wrong Worked my BUTT OFF and barely passed
Excellent professor!! I took 4 classes by Mr. Ellis and he is one of the best professors I've ever had at OCC. Really cares about his students, knows his stuff, and has endless stories to help you relate. Extremely helpful, and IMO the best professor in the Marine Bio department. I strongly encourage taking his Aquarium Science class
THIS oceanography class made me hate everything that has to do with the ocean. You go through the semester thinking your grade might get better if you work harder but it doesn't. Very disappointing boring and time consuming class.
Professor Ellis is one of the best teachers I've ever had! He's passionate about what he teaches and he gives examples from his experiences it made me passionate about oceanography that I might change my major! I highly suggest taking him! His exams are based off of the lectures and if you pay attention and study you'll be fine. He's attractive too
He is probably the best teacher I've ever had because he has so many different ways of explaining a difficult topic that he makes it easier to understand! He's approachable and patient which is important for some of the topics he teaches. Has a lot of field experience and talks about how he applied the things we have learned. He offers extra credit
One of my favorite professors ever. lectures are fun and entertaining. Professor Ellis is very passionate about the subject and cares about his students. that being said, this is not the easiest of classes. Test are short answer and hard. Definitely take him if this is your major. Hes the best in the department but be prepared to work for that A.
Thumbs down for this guy, he treats his GE class like were all marine science majors trying to get into grad school for his class. Exams were difficult, he never went over past exams or quizzes to see what we missed up on if we got a question wrong. He makes confusing topics even more confusing with his teaching style. Don't recommend.
One of the hardest classes. Exams were very difficult, he never went over past exams to see what we missed and how we can improve on the next exam. He makes topics difficult then it needs to be. This class is very test based and very little homework based the Essay questions on the exams are hard. Don't take this class!
10 homeworks: 10 pts 4 exams: 100 pts Optional Final: 400 pts and can replace all exams (can only help) Total: 500 pts Extra credit (Spring 2018): 10 Student instruction sessions (1 pt each, +5 if you went to all 10) 4 SLO quizzes(1 pt each, just be there) Attend lecture and read book. His tests will check for understanding. Don't just memorize.
Really cooll
Dont take this class it is extremely difficult for a 100 class.
This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken and the study guides were not clear . The exams did have essay questions and the book was not used . To pass you must be a great note taker and study extremly hard. I would not take this class . This class should be a 400 level at University. The teacher did not drop the lowest test grade.
Rob is so passionate about Marine Science and it really shows. He is one of my favorite professors I've had so far- he is good at responding/giving feedback and encourages students to get involved This is not an easy class, be prepared to study. Two tests and one final at the end, all are hard but curved. Homework is minimal and kind of fun.
I loved this class. With his encouragement, I was a marine science major for a period of time. He is super interesting during lectures, and makes an effort to make everything interesting. Super kind, and willing to help if you ask. Make sure you do the weekly articles.
Rob is so passionate about marine science and it really motivated me to learn the material. I loved learning in this class and I learned so much for a 100 level course. With this said, this course is a challenge! Rob's tests expect you to know the ins and outs of terms and how they all relate to each other. DON'T FORGET YOUR WEEKLY ARTICLES!!
Professor Ellis is one of the best teachers at OCC he is very passionate about marine biology so if this is your major I strongly encourage you to take his class. Be prepared to study a lot to pass his test and take good notes. He expects detailed answers on test and is more than happy to help if you go to office hours.
Offers 15 points of e.c. if you go to 10 supplemental instruction sessions which are 50 minutes each or 1 pt for each one you go to. You are graded on 4 (100 question) exams (100 pts each) and 10 extremely easy hw assignments (10 pts each). To do well you must turn your hw in on time and make sure to show up and really understand everything he says
Professor Ellis is one of the nicest professors ever. His lectures really show how intelligent and knowledgeable he is in Marine Science. However, his tests are really hard for a 100 class. Be prepared to study a lot. He does offer extra credit (15 points) and his homework assignments are very easy.
I loved taking his class. His lectures were heavy, but I really enjoyed everything that he lectured about. He's extremely passionate and caring. Pretty funny too. If you want to get ahead as a marine biology major, you should take all of his classes. He's a professor that will make you want to major in marine biology.
there is no assigned material for this class! powerpoints in class are only pictures and he post them on canvas too! this soo hilarious!
This professor is awesome. Smart and great personality. One of the best I've had. But what a waste of time. I'm an economics major and because of his test I have to spend more time on this subject than econ/math. Test are hard if you don't study. One thing I didn't like is he said no need for the txt book, but you definitely should read it lol.
Rob was an okay teacher. I was disappointed however that you didn't really need to show up to his class. All you have to do to pass his class is study his old exams in his office hours & you are guaranteed to pass this class. Do do your homework it's important. Lectures don't make very much sense. Just ask questions in his office hours & your fine.
Best teacher ive Had so far!!! He is super friendly. I got an A with doing my homework and studying to the exams. He offers extra credit
I loved taking his class. His lectures were heavy, but I really enjoyed everything that he lectured about. He's extremely passionate and caring. He's a professor that will make you want to major in marine science.
Professor Ellis is a good teacher but he is a tough grader, it seems to be difficult to please him however, he is very kind and you can see he genuinely cares about his students success.
He is a sweet man, but gosh is his class hard. I have never had trouble with getting A's & B's in my entire life, but his class makes your GPA go downhill. I could tell he's passionate about oceanography but it's near to impossible to pass this class. Only graded on tests, no homework. Optional extra credit. Talks like you already know the material
Professor Ellis is a great teacher; all of the tests are based upon the lectures he gives in class, so be sure to show up and you'll get an A no problem, but if you miss class its extremely hard to catch up. Theres zero homework and weekly extra credit opportunities, so do the EC! He is very thorough, funny and passionate about the class. Take him!
Professor Ellis has been by far my favorite professor I've ever taken. He takes pride in what he does and is always willing to help during his office hours. This is also the hardest class I've had, I'm still not sure what my grade will be but I can without a doubt he does all he can do to make sure his students understand the material.
Prof. Ellis came as a surprisingly enjoyable instructor. Im a business major so this was just for the science credit but I can honestly say I learned a lot and even readjusted my views on the environment and global events. The class is 100% lecture and theres a TON of info but he is happy to repeat anything, just ask :) Only 4 tests, EC offered.
This class was not an easy class. All his lectures are pictures so it's confusing how to take notes on it. Stay away.
As everyone else has said, this class is VERY difficult. I read these reviews before adding the class because I have no trouble getting As in everything... usually.. but this is an exception. I cannot follow his lectures or train of thought well at all, although I TRULY strive to. Interesting content if you study on your own. Nice enough prof, tho.
Whether you need to take a science for your general education or are getting started in marine science as a field, take Rob's classes. Extremely well organized class, clear expectations, and incredible, fascinating lectures. He speaks encyclopedically about the field with gripping passion and unpacks dense concepts with ease. Don't miss out!
Do not recommend taking this class unless you are a marine bio major.
Really good professor, lectures all the material you need to know for tests, understanding and really nice dude
Makes me want to change my major. I fell like if he was a HS teacher, he'd be the kind that says "no one deserves 100." I genuinely don't understand what he expects. If you're not an oceanography major, do yourself a favor and don' t take his class. Since he's one of the main ocean. prof.'s, it sucks cuz pretty much ur GPA depends on him for reqs.
Do not take Rob. His teaching literally makes no sense. He literally only shows pictures and just talks about them. Tests make no sense. Notice all the students giving him positive ratings are marine bio majors. If Marine Bio is not your major do not take him you will FAIL.
I was his class note-taker and I still struggled to pass. This class was extremely hard for a lower division, introductory course. If you want to learn a whole lot and get an A, this is not the class for you. I am still confused on the topic, and only managed to pass with a B due to receiving extra credit as the class note taker.
Professor Ellis is a very knowledgeable man with incredibly detailed and interesting lectures! He's genuinely passionate about the field and a pretty nice guy. Bare in mind, however, that you *must* pay attention in order to pass. His quizzes aren't too tough if you know the material, but his exams were insanely hard--take thorough notes and study!
I wrote a paper and he commented that it was good, just needed a little more in one section. He gave me a C on it. No matter how thorough and accurate your responses are, it's never good enough. Don't expect an A or even a high B unless you've taken aquarium science first or concurrently. Really disappointing, I used to love marine bio.
Rob is amazing, sadly he was only there once a week for lectures. The rest of the time was spent with our aquarium managers. Unfortunately mine was Libby Singh and she was so awful she made me want to skip class most days. She would shame you for not knowing an answer and was so rude.
Professor Ellis is a very knowledgeable, passionate teacher who you will learn new things from. A tip would be to do all of the extra credit-- they seem small but they will be worth it at the end of the semester. Studying can be hard, but there is a generous curve. The exams are 100MCQ tests 4 times and if you get an A you can skip the final.
Not an easy ge, just take something else not worth the low grade if you want to transfer
I took this class irl and failed but the online version is better. I'm not great at irl lectures so this class was more my style definitely. He lays it all out on canvas so there's a pattern. Each week has the same work/layout just with different chapters. Discussions are graded heavy so don't miss any. You can tell he's passionate about the ocean.
Great prof & is a passionate person about marine science. Lectures involve him lecturing about the current topic and answering questions when they arise. Coming to lecture is recommended. 4 100pt tests with weekly extra credit & optional final that is worth 300pts & will be added to your best exam + extra credit to replace final grade if better.
As a person he is funny but as a professor he is awful. Study guides don't match test. He keeps everything locked until the day before so you can't go to the library and print anything to be prepared for the class. If you try to ask him a question about anything, he gets really pissed off Why would I wanna ask another student
Great professor
He does applied marine science so in turn you have people complain on here because the answers aren't fed to them. He gives great lectures and puts them into practical senses. Very knowledgeable, passionate and humble. In order to succeed in his courses you definitely want to be passionate and willing to learn.
i am terrible at science like it doesnt click in my mind. but this professor not only simplifies everything for you but explains everything step by step and connects it to the real world. if you dont show up to class or try, you will not pass and thats given for any class. come to class, be attentive, and ask questions. it really is easy, so study!
Class is heavy, what I hate the most is his slide is not support my study at all, slide with less definition and just picture, but his lecture is heavy and have a lot of knowledge that need to reread a lot. The test is super heavy.
I took Marine Bio with this professor and though his lectures start off slow especially if you have already taken Oceanography beforehand, He is very funny and entertaining. Also, even though the grading is based on exams, which there are three of and a research project, The project is quite fun because you get to go into the field and be hands on
The professor was fine but again its a science class. Also I took this over Zoom during Covid times so it was not it for me. Just pay attention and do hw! Overall he is nice but can be rough during exams and stuff.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A GENERAL ED!! This professor is amazing and knows his stuff, but as someone who sucks at science, I was not meant to take this for a general ed credit.. A lot people who take this class are marine science majors and says he is a good professor, but I struggled a lot because his pacing is fast and unorganized sometimes.
grade is mostly from exams, lots of extra credit opportunities, lectures can be confusing but he'l always answer questions and explains things very well
