He makes a pretty boring subject interesting. Even if you don't like Business Law, he'll make you laugh just looking at his crazy costumes. I thought this was a great class!

The guy really is nuts, but I have to admit I did laugh quite a few times at his lectures and that doesn't happen to often in any UF lecture. The material is hard and you have to work really hard, but its not impossible to make an A.

Fantastic Prof! Best Ever!

So, it's business law- the material is pretty dry. Despite that, he manages to entertain with his goofiness and the class (thanks in large part to a huge army of TA's) runs like a well-oiled business law machine. Get the Smokin' Notes and do the coursework!

By far one of the best professors at UF, in terms of teaching ability and smarts. A joy to watch and he is an all-around nice person. Read everything and do the coursework. He doesn't drop any tests, they all get averaged in somehow, so the coursework becomes your safty net. Watch all the lectures!

Emerson is brilliant (and usually on LSD). The class is pretty tough and some of the test questions are ambiguous. DO ALL THE COURSEWORK.

He's full of antics but pay attention, and follow his lectures along in the LSB text. He goes over everything, without skipping around, that he considers important and will be on your test. Do all of the assesment quizes in the Faulkner CD. They take time but most of his questions come from it. Go to live lectures, volunteer, dress up, it's fun! =)

i got mostly D's on his tests even though i studied my ass off. when he says open book, its like a joke. but DO THE COURSEWORK b/c i ended up with almost a B+ b/c of it

The class assignments are explained clearly.I only went to class for the first part of the semester.I never watched the classes.I did all of the CWs and got a B+ in the class.His teaching methods are interesting, although not appealing to everyone.However, he told those that attended class they would get EC, but all he did was add it into the CW's.

Most of the negative recommendations on this site tend to be too extreme.However in the case of Emerson they are actually pretty accurate, the man is totally consumed with himself and really an arrogant bast**d which is really something I do not say lightly. His antics get old after the first class. People used TZ notes so made the test impossible.

Overall a very good professor. Everyone knows he is a nut though. He dances and prances like a fruitcake every class to demonstrate his points. While I admire his enthusiasm, a lot of it is a bit much, and is just a waste of your time. Study hard, do the crazy ammount of papers and reading, and you'll do well and learn a lot while you're at it.

Excellent Prof. Has won about a dozen teacher of the year awards.

This class was actually pretty good. Nowhere near the difficulty these whiners say. I'm set for an A without any Herculean effort. I wish his lectures stayed more to the material and less to his theatrics. Very helpful-called me back to answer questions about the material and sent emails to congratulate high scores on exams.

Wonderful class. Even gave out comprehensive notes to lectures. returns phone calls promptly; answers all e-mails, and even sends congratulatory e-mails, while having 700 students! Funny, interesting, informative lectures. Wish other professors put in even 1/10 the effort he does.

I don't even think a lawyer could get an A. I barely made a C. He seems nuts but is a great teacher, very very helpful more so than any other UF teacher I've had. Tests are extremely difficult even though its open book, if you don't know the answer good luck finding it. If you had all day to take it you might get an A.

Excellent instructor. Honestly, if you put the effort and READ your textbooks (which you can use for tests) then getting a B should be no problem at all. Emerson is extremely interesting and I look forward to more courses instructed by him. If you sign up for this course NOT interested in the material, just don't take it. BUL4310 is for lovers.

This class definitely requires effort. You should read most of the required reading prior to the test. While people mostly complain about the trickiness, you have to realize this going in - the slightest detail (left in or left out) changes the outcome of a situation. This class is do-able.

WOW! WOW! Hard! Interesting Class! You will learn a lot BUT smoking notes DO NOT HELP, and the test are open book, and most people fail. HARD!

Asset to UF. Very intelligent Harvard grad, understands the law. His exams are much like what you will find in law school, challenging the very principles in the search for the "grey". Would recommend to anyone up for a challenge or does not care about their grade.

Great class. You should read most if not all of the assigned readings. Exams are highly analytical, so you must understand the material. Prof. Emerson was very entertaining, I went to the live lectures.

Awesome professor, keeps you interested in lecture. The Smokin Notes did not help me at all. When I stopped using smokin notes and started watching lecture, highlighting book and reading the barrons book I got a 93 on the exam. When I used smokin notes I got a 65 and 68. Just my opinion, but look at the suggestions on how to study and use that!

Such a great professor and great guy! Not the easiest class I've ever taken and not a subject I thought I would have any interest in at all, but it's the first time I was actually a little bit sad to end the class. I really enjoyed this class. Take this professor!

Watch the lectures and keep up in the book and BAM you have at least a B. Not a difficult class (as upperclassmen we've had much worse), so no one should complain. It was a breath of fresh air to have Emerson, and I'm happy to be graduating on a high note from UF! Really enjoyed the class. It will be helpful later on in life! :)

Prof. Emerson is arguably an acquired taste. His style, and outlandishness, might turn some off. But if you allow yourself get past, or even into, the theatrics, there is a vast amount of learning to be had. The tests are not easy, but if you read, keep up with lectures, and put the time in, you can perform well, while learning valuable info.

Very... different. Sometimes funny, sometimes just annoying. But reading the LSB text is a MUST. Barron's book just used as a reference. Shouldn't miss the lectures! Use tabs to label things in your book!!!! Test are open book so familiarity w/ location of material is key. Overall a pretty fun class which I learned a lot from.

Professor Emerson is amazing. His passion for the law is contagious and coupled with this passion is his vast knowledge which he conveys to his students in an entertaining fashion. I ended up with a B+ in the class but I was also studying abroad and did not dedicate as much time as I could have. If you go to class and read the book you will be fine

Requires a lot of studying, but he makes the material interesting. Use a highlighter in your book and bookmark everything! I really enjoyed his class, even though he's a Baltimore Ravens fan. Go Steelers!

He uses the books A LOT as he wrote them :p Very smart guy, but tries too hard to be kooky and I found it more distracting than entertaining. Expect a lot of reading, printing, highlighting, and tabbing.

Professor Emerson's class is fun! His tests are open book/ open note, but do not be fooled! You need to know the material.

Emerson is crazy but his lectures are interesting. Read every page of the textbook if you want to do well on tests. Tests are open note and open book so be familiar with the book and organize your notes. Not an easy class but you will learn a lot and if you keep up with reading and lectures you will do well. Not recommended for lazy people.

Can't say enough about Emerson. Keeps you awake during lecture, hilarious. Study hard. You'll get a ton out of this class.

One of the better courses I've taken in college thus far. There is no doubt that Prof. Emerson is a looney, but he knows how to teach and keep it interesting. You will need the LSB. The Barron's helps reinforce concepts if needed, and provides a strong glossary and index. Just keep up and practice with the old exam ?s.

Class is REALLY hard, especially if your a business major because you have law students taking this course as an elective which they have the upper hand though Emerson's grading scale is fair but class requires alot of work and you have to read about 750 pages of readings.. Very analytical test questions not easy at all.

The test are SOOO confusing and he purposely make's it that way. Test are really hard and you have to read an incredible amount of material. Out of 160 pages each exam we read anything could be on the exam. Again, class is really hard old exam problems don't help that much you just have to read and understand the book.

Emerson is a fantastic professor. Easily my favorite at UF. Watch/go to class he makes it extremely fun. I still go around telling Emerson anecdotes. Reading both the LSB and Barrons book is a must prior to the exam. Test questions are very specific but doable. Go to class, read LSB, read Barrons, highlight & PQs should set you up well. I got an A-

This guy is great. Costumes master. Class was very interesting, gives you insight on various aspects of law surrounding business. Recommended.

Make sure you read both books and listen to his lecture. That's the only way you can get an A. Smokin notes will help you understand things, but don't rely on that. His practice exams are different from his actual exam. I thought the lecture was actually interesting.

I really enjoyed the class

Step 1: READ THE ENTIRE BOOK. (LSB) Step 2: Don't watch the lectures. If you do watch lectures, read the book FIRST. Step 3: DO ALL OF THE PRACTICE QUESTIONS. Step 4: Write the term paper. Seriously just do it, I got a 100 on it. I got 95 on the first two exams, 100 on the term paper, and I skipped the final. Easy peasy

This class has easily been the most beneficial class I have taken at UF so far. The lectures shouldn't be your priority but the "Law, Society, and Business" text is CRUCIAL. Funniest professor you will ever meet. Made this horrible hard boring class much better. Prepare to read the most you every had in your life. That is what it takes to pass this class. Read that whole LSB. What I did is read all the chapters, highlight important sentences, and then re-read those important sentences every single night until test.

Amazing professor overall. Goes out of his way to make law as interesting as possible and clearly cares about his students. Emerson is one of those people that you look at and it's just obvious they were born to teach. Watch the lectures (I watched on 1.4x speed mostly), read the texts, and do practice problems and you should be golden.

This class is easy in the sense that there is no hw, just study for tests. But this class is hard because the tests are extremely difficult to pass. Emerson does curve the heck out of the tests which is a life saver, and DO THE PAPER because you are almost guaranteed to fail at least one exam. I only used SN and finished with a C. Read LSB for B/A

Emerson is a great and caring teacher. This class is reading heavy, but it's totally do-able. He's a great professor and tries to engage the class. Would definitely take again, super nice guy.

By far, the best professor I've ever had. The guy is simply born to teach, and he absolutely loves doing it. With that said, it is extremely difficult, so don't expect this open notes, open book class that's graded entirely off exams to be easy. Your likelihood of an A may be relatively low, but it is possible with reading and lectures.

Just read the LSB AND the Barrons. His grading scale with extra credit is very very generous. Very eccentric, but great at engaging students who want to learn the material. Read each exam question carefully bc usually there is one crucial detail that people miss. Lots of reading, but one solid read through the textbooks should be enough studying.

Fantastic professor. The class is extremely difficult, and the entire grade relies on exams. Watch all the lectures and read ahead, and you can do relatively well. He promises no trick questions, which I won't way I completely believe, but overall, exams are fairly written and fairly graded. HUGE curves are also a plus.

The class is very disorganized but the Smoking Notes help a ton. The exams being open note doesn't mean that they are by any means easy. The class is interesting but if you don't need it don't take it. ALSO, WRITE THE PAPER IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE.

Emerson is highly energetic, literally dancing around the room during lectures. There are two books to be READ, not skimmed, and you need to watch the class lectures and topical lectures to be ready for the exam. You can write a term paper to replace your lowest exam grade. Very heavy on reading, but exams are open notes, open book.

I took this class over 10 years ago and still find myself able to mentally pull up things we learned. The content is incredibly useful in the real world (if you pursue business or entrepreneurship) and Emerson's ability to contextualize the information when I took class really has helped the material stick.

Dr. Emerson is crazy with his costumes, but the lectures are entertaining. He is brilliant and eccentric, so it's difficult to understand what he is talking about. But if you go to class, take good notes, and read the textbook, it will all make sense! I did this, the term paper and the extra credit and I got like a 98.6 in the class. Very possible!

Truly cares about his students and gives you many resources to succeed. Read the book, use smokin notes and do the extra credit and you should get an A. All tests are open note open book but you have to read the material ahead of time because the tests are long.

Prof Emerson's theatrical performances are the highlight of this class. This guy is so goofy, but that's what makes this class so great. I find law rlly boring, but Prof Emerson was just SO hilarious. He can sing, he can dance, he can teach. He REALLY enjoys his job, and you can tell. READ THE LSB, have an index, and do the practice questions. I honestly only watched a few lectures to clarify some topics but Emerson genuinely puts in effort to make it entertaining. Also, the content actually seems like it will be helpful in life. It is a lot of reading but I've enjoyed it. Grade is based on 3 exams and a few extra credit items.

at first, I was REALLY thrown-off by how... off-the-wall this guy is. but after a few lectures, I started to enjoy his lectures. read first, watch the lecture, do some practice questions, rinse and repeat. offers a term paper which can replace your lowest test score, which is AWESOME.

He is a very eccentric man, so what you might have heard is most likely true. All you really need to to do is read his LSB or if your lazier the smokin' notes. Do both extra credits and the term paper. You should pass and if you put in minimal effort get an A. He is a very nice guy and if you are considering law school it's a fun class.

READ. It's a very fun class, he is a great teacher but you really have to read both the LSB and Barron books. If you read the chapters before watching the lectures and do the practice exams you should be fine.

Really fun class!! You need to read the LSB religiously, you can skip Barron's but I would still buy/rent it so you can use it on the exams. Check every question on the exams with the LSB and Barron's. Making an index for the exam is helpful. Do the paper if you can. If you're a good writer it'll be a breeze and you'll replace an exam!!

Great professor who wants students to pass. There are 3 open book/notes exams. Your highest exam score is worth 45%, your next highest is worth 35%, and your lowest is worth 20%. Offers an optional term paper to replace a test grade and other extra credit. Mainly focus on reading the textbook (LSB) which he offers a free and youll be fine.

His lecture style is very funny, unorthodox and unique and consists of him acting like a duck, dancing in costumes and playing music. Grading is 3 conditionally-weighted open book/note exams, optional term paper and 2 EC papers. If you want to do the optional writing stuff, treat it as a 4K word class. Exams are tricky and kinda hard but he curves.

My approach was to read the smokin notes several times and create an alphabetical index of important terms and topics with a brief definition and a page number for reference. The tests are difficult but building an index and then doing as many practice questions as possible is the key. Dont do the smokin notes practice questions, they wont help!

Fun professor, but the LSB and lectures were too confusing to learn from. Reading the Smokin'Notes and grinding out the practice problems about 1-2 weeks before the exam was enough to secure an A, without any extra credit. Also, he curves his exams by a RIDICULOUS amount, making it hard to fail this class, as long as you keep up with the material.

He understand that this class is hard, so he gives extra credit. Honestly how all professors should be. You definitely have to read the LSB because the exam questions are tricky.

Must read the LSB to get an A. Highlight as you read and tab the book so you can find things during the exam. Do the term paper. It is very easy and doesn't even have to be that good to get a high score. Will save you from a lot of stress going into exam 3. Lectures are not important to get an A.

Great class and extremely beneficial if you plan on doing just about anything in the business world. I do not recommend watching the lectures but get ready to read A LOT. Each exam is based on over 200 pages worth of reading and exams are very difficult, write the extra credit essay or you will be in trouble.

All you need to get a good grade in this class is a clear grasp of the LSB. The other book and his lectures aren't very helpful. Only 3 exams. Open note, so summarize the LSB into an index of topics. Dr. Emerson's lectures are interesting but aren't particularly helpful on Exam day (2-3 questions maybe). Summarize the LSB and you'll do fine.

This class turned out both easier and more interesting that I anticipated. LSB/lectures are solid but not necessary. I read the smokin' notes and grinded out the practice exams about a week before each exam and got an A. DO the term paper. Its graded easy and takes out your lowest exam grade.

This class is challenging! You can't cram the material for the exam! I read the 200+ pages, watched his lectures and bought Smokin notes and did all his test practice questions and still found the exam to be difficult! The first exam is the easiest exam so do everything possible to get a good grade on that exam! Also do the Extra credit paper!

Professor Emerson is a captivating lecturer and someone who truly cares for his students. The entire class is based on 2 books he wrote, which are not easy reads. Each exam is based on roughly 300 pages of reading. Professor Emerson makes everything memorable by adding costumes and crazy scenarios to keep ideas in your head.

He keeps lectures fun and unique. Tests are kinda hard but open note so I recommend marking your textbooks with tabs to easily find material. He curves exams quite a bit!

I loved this class. Professor Emerson is really fun. He likes to dress up and be silly and it makes the class really engaging. If you do the readings, prepare for exams, and do the optional paper, you'll do great in this class. It's really not that hard as long as you dedicate the time to learn the material.

I did Smokin Notes and worked practice problems. With term paper replacing lowest exam score made an A easily. He is funny and entertaining. I personally do not think this class is nearly as hard as its made out to be. Just put effort in the right places. Beware he will ask randomly detailed questions about what he talked about a specific lecture.

He is a great professor and there is no denying in that. Going to the lectures is completely optional but I would recommend for the fun. The readings are heavy, so have a very clear schedule to read every day! DO THE PAPER! It helps a lot to relax for the third exam, which is the hardest. Read the book and do the practice problems and you're good!

Professor Emerson is a very-straightforward professor. His expectations for the class are clearly outlined within the first week of the semester. The course uses two primary textbooks; all exam questions come from these. He provides an extensive exam review and offers extra credit as well. The class is structured around three exams.

I have never met a professor as dedicated to teaching as Professor Emerson. He wears (multiple) costumes EVERY lecture to provide tons of hilarious examples to supplement the reading. The class is difficult- but there are 3 extra credit papers, and the exams are completely open note. However, you still should do the practice problems to do well.

BEWARE OF THE THIRD EXAM. The third exam is nothing like the first two, WAY harder. Professor Emerson gives you the opportunity to write a term paper that replaces your lowest exam score, DO IT! He also provides 2 points of extra credit. The exam questions are very long and difficult, but not impossible. Really tough class, but doable.

loved this class tbh. lots of reading yes, but manageable if you stick to a reading schedule. the material is interesting which makes it easy to remember and exam questions (open book) are straight from the textbooks. didn't watch the lectures (sorry professor) and got over 100 on every exam. do the term paper though so you can relax for exam 3

Amazing prof, grades very leniently and really does want you to succeed. I truly don't understand why this class has such a bad reputation, I learned so much and prof is very reasonable. 10/10 would take again

I'm going to be 100% honest, this is a difficult class but not impossible. GET SMOKIN NOTES, I would've not passed if it weren't for SN. DO THE PRACTICE QUESTIONS!!!! Begin studying a week in advance. I would've probably gotten an A had I not studied only 4 days in advance. DO THE EXTRA TERM PAPER. I promise it will save you!!! It is possible!!!

Don't give in to the hype. This class is not as difficult as it is made out to be. As entertaining as the lectures are, I personally did not learn from them very well. You will be much better off reading the textbooks/smokinnotes. Finished with an A, and I am not usually an A student. As long as you put forth the effort, you can do it.

This class scared me going in due to Not being the greatest test taker. I did all the extra credit and did horrible on 2 of the exams and still passed with a D due to the extra credit. The class is doable even for bad test takers.

This class was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I didn't read the LSB, watch the lectures or do the optional paper and still got a B+. I read the Smokin Notes and did 300 practice questions 2-3 days before the exam. With a bit more effort, I could've easily gotten an A or A-. Every exam was curved by 8-10%.

I graduated 2 years ago and I still think about Professor Emerson all the time. He turned a tedious, boring subject into a fun class to look forward to. If you have the chance, take a class with him.

I love learning about law. Prof. Emerson goes out of his way to be accessible, make the content enjoyable, and to prep you for the exams. That being said, the exams are challenging, even for someone who loves law. Study daily. Go beyond memorizing definitions to truly understand what the questions are asking you. Go to office hours and chat.

This is one of the few professors here at UF who actually is passionate about what they do but also genuinely cares about the student's success.

The most important materials in this class are the LSB and BL textbook; those are all you need to pass. Professor Emerson is eccentric, but he is still an engaging lecturer that I would still recommend everyone watch his lectures. His passion is so contagious I almost tricked myself into thinking I wanted to go to law school.

I enjoyed this class a lot! Really energetic professor and shows how passionate he is. Lectures are long so I used Smokin Notes to cut down study time and they really helped. Overall great course if you space out your studying 5 days before exams and do all extra credit papers.

difficult but by no means impossible to do well. if you're willing to start prepping for exams at least a week in advance, and do ALL the reading, practice, and extra credit, this is a very achievable A or B. just don't take it in combination with a lot of other hard classes, as it requires so much time and focus to get through and comprehend

I'm a finance major and took this at the same time as BFI (insane, I know). It's not half as bad as I was expecting. Emerson is phenomenal- he is so generous with curving every test and is so open to helping you if you have questions. DO THE PAPER & EXTRA CREDIT!! They grade it very nicely and you can slack off a bit for exam 3.

This class isn't too bad if you have smokin notes. For the first exam, I would say to read the textbook and smokin notes to get the basics. However, for exam 2, I relied only on smokin notes and practice problems and I did fine. The third exam is definitely the hardest. DO THE TERM PAPER AND EXTRA CREDIT. It will save your grade.

He cares about what he teaches, which makes the material easier to digest. The more you read, the better you will do. Be warned—his final exam is markedly harder than the other exams, and the practice material does not prepare you for this. Hindsight being what it is, I should have done the term paper, so I recommend it.

I listened to some of Emerson's lectures for the first exam and they are quite entertaining, but reading the LSB and Smokin Notes is enough to do well on exams. Do every practice problem to study for the exams, and DO THE TERM PAPER as it makes the end of the semester easy if you score well on the first two exams. He also curves exam grade.

I only read the LSB and watched the lectures, no Smokin' Notes. I also did the term paper which helps a lot. Emerson is an awesome professor, you can tell he really cares about TEACHING not just memorizing. If you can go in person, please do! He puts so much effort into the lectures (about 3 costume changes/class) which is really refreshing.

I only used the LSB and Smokin Notes to create my index. If you do the extra credit and term paper you should easily be able to get a B, at the minimum. Do all the practice problems he gives since they're similar to the exam. Very passionate professor who wants you to succeed!

Incredible class! My favorite one so far. Professor Emerson knows exactly what he's doing to keep his students engaged. The lectures are all memorable but the line isn't drawn there... the supplemental videos are also incredible for learning. Wish I could write more, but I have to get back to reading haha. ALOT of reading. But it's great!!!

I really can't emphasize this enough, do the term paper and all of the extra credit. Professor Emerson really cares about his students and does all that he can to ensure student success. This class is a good learning experience, but I would not call it an easy A. Make a reading schedule and stick to it (AND DO ALL OF THE EC) and you will do well.
