I like him, even though he is a realist
Interesting lectures. Open to discussions. Tends to go off topic.
My fav' poli sci prof yet. Extremely helpful.
Most pol-sci profs who specialize in int.politics are realists. All you need is one **** with lots of guns *cough,..Bush* and you can stuff all that idealistic liberalism up your a** because no one can stop a **** with more guns than everyone else.
watch out, this guy is a hard marker and he does play favorites. make sure to go to every class. there fun anyways.
Best Professor I've had at UBC hands down.
a really genuinely nice prof- cries when he sees his daughter- but his exams were a bit unfair and marked harshly.
It's too bad this guy lives in the U.S. although he did bring a Krispy Creme donut to class to tie in with a lecture. I felt that his tests were fair but demanding.
I checked the schedule and noticed the absence for the Fall. Was hoping to take 366!
He was one of the best teachers at UBC. I learned tones in his class about realism, realism and realism. Dispite this, he was great! His class discussions helped alot.
great teacher, interesting, loves to talk in office hours 0ff-topic, genuinely sweet guy.
Just not my type of prof i guess. I hated the textbook he chose, never-ending pages of stuff i can't read. Very Hard tests. Lectures hard to follow, he goes everywhere. nice guy though.
Very helpful and approachable prof, always goes out of his way to answer questions to the best of his ability. Very friendly, can talk to him like a friend, joke around, have good conversation. He picks good texts and shows good movie clips!
Inspiring, by far the best set of lectures i've ever been to (tho the exam came back to haunt me as i didnt take any notes and u needed to have read a lot - whoops!) after, I swapped from lame econ to IR, which Im now studying at Cambridge. Cheers Doc
Fantastic lectures. Prof Farkasch is a great guy and great teacher.
one of the best profs i ever had! he actually took the time to learn everybody's name... and it was a huge class!
lousy, extremely lousy

Dr. F. is awesome! I thoroughly enjoyed this class, even though it was summer school. This is also the first time I've ever been to every single class and didn't sleep at all - a testament to how good this guy is. Interesting, personable, approachable, encouraging - I highly recommend a class with him.
One of the best Prof's ive ever had, he is hilarious, and doesnt try to be politically correct. We need more right leaning Prof's in this school. Dr. F rocks, funny, appraochable, and an all around good guy, he is actually interested in what he teaches, and inspires his students to learn
Wonderful teacher, he inspired me to do a double major in Poli Sci and Economics! Very knowledgable and witty, he actually cares about educating his students. If you have a chance to take a class with him, do so! You won't regret it.
Dr.F is kind, smart and professional. He is extremely fair, and respects students' opinions regardless of whether they match his. If you put the effort in, you'll do well.

One of the best professors at UBC. Has a very different perspective on business practices than a typical poli. prof. Lectures were 3 hours, but very engaging. Robert is able to stimulate an interest in economics even among those who were initially not very interested in the subject. Excellent professor!
Yes, he is a very nice and approachable guy, but he doesn't always get his facts right... which is unacceptable for a uni prof. Also, has a very biased opinion (which is fine, everyone is biased) but should not display his bias so strongly in class. His bias is also reflected in his choice of texts.
Awesome prof! Participation in class is encouraged, he is interesting, funny and clearly excited about teaching. I would definitely take a class from him again!
Good formal lectures for those of us not poli sci majors! Excellent dialogue with class - solicits opinions regardless of basis. Classes are very interesting. Highly recommended.
lectures boring result skipped a few classes still passed with a B. Econ sect hard! Topic however is very interesting, the text books are great. Critical book review, is hard. TA marks everything, expect Rwanda Q on final. Exams r easy as he gives u the 9 possible q's, 5 show up u answer 3. midterm needs more time tho. Guest speaker & videos great!
Not too bad of a guy, but not that interesting of a prof. His lectures were useless, he talked for an hour and a half but didn't say anything. Class was marked harshly (not just my own, but I knew many people in the class) but the TA's did all the marking. He loves Econ but ignored some of the more interesting stuff on terrorism. Overall not great.
This teacher was so incredibly biased that I dropped the course! Plus he is full of factual errors! It's hard to believe this guy is a prof...
Really decent guy, but bad lectures. Kaija, my TA was awful. Ended up with a really bad mark even though the material was easy. My avg. is 80% and I got a 62 in this class. Kind of a nightmare. Turned me off IR.
This Prof. is one of the best. He is very acknowledged and is passionate about teaching. The class was awesome and I enjoyed it.
Brilliant, eloquent, decent, professional, punctual, approachable and helpful. His readings are carefully selected from the best academics and reliable sources in the field.Exams are easy if you attend his class and do the readings. Good choice of book for critical book review.
A professor knows his stuffs and able to teach you the knowledge you need. Helpful also outside of class. He is more than a teacher/professor, he is a great "educator".
Very good professor, although he is not an easy marker. Encourages participation. Most enjoyable class I've taken at UBC.
if you EVER get a chance to take a course taught by him-- DO IT. He lectures well, presents balanced debates and is open to hearing and challenging students. The book review is kind of annoying but if you can get past that, take ipe or another poli sci with him
very enthusiastic and answers questions to the best of his ability. the topics he touched on in class were interesting and relevant to global politics. one of the best classes i've ever taken.
Sometimes I feel like I'm paying to hear him talk about whatever he feels like, not teach. He's NICE but gives mediocre examples to questions posed in class. Lectues are almost useless for exams, you could do better just reading the text in your own time. TAs mark hard, don't be fooled by the laidback lectures. Reconsidering my interest in IR.
This class is my favourite at UBC! He actually takes the time to lecture on current issues that matter. Very bright and able to relate. Highly recommended.
His enthusiasm makes the course even greater than it already is. Very good prof, although online notes are very scattered and all over the place. Awesome content choices but tough.
Excellent professor. Enthusiastic; values students thoughts. Midterm and Final Exam were essay questions. Kind and Humorous, an overall great guy. Does tend to go off topic a little though.
very enthusiastic professor. able to stimulate interest in politics for anybody.
Readings were kind of organized randomly, but in the end it made sense. Extremely clear instructor whose class discussions never feel forced, affable guy, high marker. Would take a class with him again in a second.
class was interesting, textbook was useful if you dont have much poli sci background, do the assigned readings to succeed in tutorial
Great Prof. who loves to talk and loves to give a large amount of reading. You will learn, a lot. And if you like learning, his classes are interesting. He's a great guy, and great instructor! Highly recommended.
Dr. F was my instructor in three correspondance classes through Troy University. I learned a lot from him each time (and received an A every time). He is very engaged - he's the only professor to call me to get to know me - very rare in correspondance classes. He was also extremely lenient with deadlines. Highly recommended.
Topic (terrorism)is extremely interesting. Prof seems very knowledgeable as well. What's the problem? There is NO structure to the class at all. The whole class is like a gigantic class discussion with very little "meat". I expected a lot more from this class.
He is a very good prof and his midterms are pretty fair .During his lectures he always emphasizes just main things and is always happy to have a good dicussion in the class. He is also very nice during his office hours.I really recommend him!
By far my favorite professor of this term. He is extremely educated and always willing to help. I would definitely recommend him. Go to class to succeed because he covers a lot of the test information in lecture - lectures are interesting and often relate to current events.
One of my favourite profs. Super nice guy. Encourages lots of class discussion, which can be entertaining. Taught Terrorism and Intnat'l Political Economy (one of my favourite classes ever). Assigns a lot of extra readings, but covers general concepts of important ones in class. Pick & choose readings to incorporate on exams. Emphasize themes!
AMAZING PROFESSOR! I'm not even in poli sci program (took it just for fun) But now I am seriously thinking about double majoring in poli or possibly IR. Attentive, funny, and extremely smart. He knows what he is talking about. TAKE THIS COURSE!
Great professor if you like provocative, unstructured teaching. Lectures are basically him holding a massive tutorial session. More than half the time it's just him chatting and debating with a few keeners in class. No substance whatsoever. Interesting, yes, but difficult to study for as there are few real notes, just a cloud of random ideas.
Eye opening course! A few people talked too much but the material and Prof. Robert made me it worthwhile. He's good at challenging concepts, very knowledgeable, and extremely approachable.
He really knows his stuff I have to say. However, he is unstructured. His course outline is really messy and difficult to understand. There are no dates for anything because he says he wants to keep up with the ever changing world of current events. His exams are easy, just basically a regurgitation of his lectures. He also marks fast.
Great prof! Very helpful outside of class. Class is really engaging and Farkasch really knows his stuff. If you do the readings the exams are not hard at all. Would definitely take another course with Farkasch.
Robert Farkasch is a very nice professor and is very helpful. He also encourages a lot of discussion in his class. However, his classes have absolutely no structure: they are completely random and his "lectures" consist mostly of him just discussing about whatever pops into his mind. However, he is not a very hard marker.
Farkash is an absolutely wonderful prof. Structure was not an issue for me since I attended class and he told us what to read. The expectations were clear and he used current media to relate the readings. Very helpful outside of class.
I usually do fine on poli papers (A-) but not in his class. He is helpful when you want to know how to improve on writing (for him, at least). His lectures are unstructured (difficult to take notes)and he's quite adamant about his opinion. Uses curse words in class - so unprofessional. Exams were fair.
Great instructor for a difficult topic. Wants the student to think about the subject, and not just give back info. I would take another course with him as he is passionate and well informed about what he teaches.
By far the BEST professor I've ever had at UBC. He's brilliant, and has amazing input on every issue. Definitely a huge focus on terrorism. Textbook not really necessary. Also, discussions VERY interesting as well. Farkasch is smart, funny, engaging, and PASSIONATE. Sometimes off-topic. A++ for this prof!
Nice guy and loves to have discussions with students about material. If you have something to say, definitely speak up in class. He focuses a lot on terrorism. Tells beforehand the midterm essay topics. Funny and interesting lectures.
Fantastic prof. I'm a 4th year student and I am taking my 3rd class with Farkasch. Not only is he brilliant, he really knows how to reach his target audience: his students. Classes are always interesting, and time flies. As long as you do the readings and show up in class you will excel. If you need to take a Poli class, take it with Farkasch!
His classes are the most fun at UBC! Always sit captivated, he really knows what he's talking about and makes it interesting! Only complaint - has his own website, a bit hard to navigate (opposed to Vista) and sometimes links dont work. Still - LOVE HIM. Take his class!
Passionate, but wears his biases on his sleeve a bit too much. It affects how he presents the material, and in an intro class, makes it difficult to craft an independent opinion. He is smart, but not as smart as he thinks he is -he would certainly do his students a favour if he tried to be a bit more objective in his analyses.
Best intro class I?ve taken at UBC! He gets you think outside of the box and is very accessible outside of class. Thanks for bringing the class to the Moyo lecture!
I always looked forward to his class because it was so interesting (and he was funny). He gave great examples, especially when explaining complicated stuff. He's always willing to help and makes an effort to talk to all of his students.
A nice guy, obviously very knowledgeable, but his lectures are disorganized. His course had no prerequisites, but it's incredibly difficult to get what he's talking about unless you're very knowledgeable yourself. Also, half the lecture is just rhetorical questions. Not a bad guy, but a hard class.
The guy is really nice and obviously very well-intentioned but I have to say sometimes it just seems like he's just from another planet. Annoyingly realist. I don't really feel like I've learned much (but the course isn't an easy A). Really, I could have just read a book chapter or three. Decent overall, though. Good movies and book selection.
Prof. Farkasch is amazing! This is my second course with him and and by far my favourite! Not only did he get me interested in the subject of terrorism but I watch the news with a more critical eye. He also cares about his students learning which is much appreciated.
I found him ineffective. Lectures and website are disorganized. Unstimulating. Vague expectations. The criteria for the paper was ridiculous. I have no idea why people are talking about him inspiring "critical thinking"; the class just felt coddling and vague. He is an approachable and nice guy, but his teaching could use some work.
High class average and easy marking = a high rating here. If you're interested in actually learning something, look elsewhere.
Such a great prof. Really funny and does a great job of inspiring interest in class. He is a fair marker.
This professor is very knowledgeable, but that is precisely his downfall. He cannot stay on track, often going on tangents for half an hour. For some students, it may be interesting - for those who actually want to learn about the theories and actors behind global politics rather than anecdotal evidence, it is a big waste of time.
Prof.F is great. He is both passionate and fair. He wants everyone to succeed. You will deff learn something!
Awesome prof! Very interested and vested in his subject. Sometimes heads off track but this often proves more helpful than harmful! One of my favourite professors in the uni - take his terrorism course if you have a chance - fascinating.
Most interesting class I have ever taken! Not only is the material relevant and interesting but the lectures go by so quickly! when ever you look at the clock the class is almost over! He gives you applicable examples and you can tell he isn't the biased type. So intelligent and a very kind man. He is the best prof I've had in the last 4 years!
Hard to follow in class- often goes off on irrelevant tangents and does not connect them back to the subject at hand. Does not outline expectations for assignments very well- syllabus and what he says in class are often at odds.
Sure, he goes off on tangents sometimes but if you actually listen, you might find that it enriches things just a bit more. He's a very knowledgable and interesting lecturer, very kind, and he just wants you to succeed. Midterm and final are zero surprises. But mark does depend entirely on TA.
The best class I've taken at UBC in the last 3 years! Linked contemporary events to theory in an informed and approachable manner. Not at all hard to follow and he even made me want to come to class on Fridays.
Informative and relevant to contemporary global affairs. Those looking for â??structuredâ??/boring slide by slide lectures, move along. Unique teaching style, fast paced and efficient. Prof is open to questions and is respectful of opposing views. Fair marker. Simple mark breakdown, two exams, paper, participation. Definitely recommend taking.
Professor Farkasch is one of the best profs at UBC. His lectures are always super engaging and really interesting! I would definitely recommend his class!
Summer course: he can talk non-stop for 2.5 hours, mostly talking to himself . Lecture content is interesting if pay attention. A long reading list but are all helpful for you to understand the subject better. Not a hard market but not an easy one either. One paper, participation and two exams. All essay questions.
You definitely need to read the textbook before his class. His lectures are literally just him listing examples and you have no idea what those examples are of. He is interesting but the "notes" he gives us are useless and very vague. Overall you WILL need the textbook in order to do well in this class. His TA's this year are really nice!
This is my favourite class at UBC. Prof. Robert made the class interesting by answering questions and talking about events that were in the news and how they related to the course.
Really great class if you have a genuine interest politics and international affairs. If you don't have an interest and are only looking for good marks, you're going to find this class frustrating. He's a really interesting person who cares about what he teaches and about his students.
He is an excellent prof who genuinely cares about his students. Some students get frustrated with his non-tranditional notes. However, these are students who don't understand the value of learning from notes that are not perfectly laid out for you like you they are in first year. I got an A by doing most of the reading and attending class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL ECONOMY. He does not go over any background information to this topic and you are expected to know the basics of economics. Despite this... I somehow ended up with a B+ and I honestly can say I know NOTHING. SO YOLO?
Professor Farkasch is without doubt one of the best professors in UBC. I came from an Econ background and I believe in my 3 years at UBC, this is the class I had the most appreciation fascination for. My tip is to read all the readings otherwise lectures will be more burdensome than fascinating.
Great Professor! My favorite prof throughout my first year at UBC. Very energetic and interesting. Great examples and stories! Make sure you do the readings.
Professor Farkasch is highly engaging and knowledgeable. However, he has a tendency to go off-topic, which makes things engaging and relevant but also has the consequence of lacking structure. His lectures are a bit difficult to follow, so I don't recommend taking him if you are unfamiliar to politics or IR.
Dr. Farkasch is a very sweet, kind, and passionate lecturer, but his classes are very difficult to follow. I'm not sure what I retained from IR that I hadn't already learned in Poli 100. His midterm/final essay questions are given out in advance on his website.
I really don't understand his high rating here. His class was the worst I took in my degree. Other students agree he's overrated. Unorganized, rambling lectures and vague outcomes/expectations. But hey, everybody on this site seems to love him, so proceed as you will.
Farkasch is an amazing lecturer, classes are always so interesting and engaging. Really stimulated my interest in international politics. But he does tend to go off topic sometimes and has kind of a negative view about the world and obviously thinks of himself very highly. But poli 260 is a great class with him, highly recommend it!
Brilliant professor. His course on Terrorism is great. The online notes are very helpful. A bit unclear on expectations for midterm and term paper. This guy definitely knows his stuff and class is very interesting. Every now and then goes on a tangent. The 1 book we used, "The Looming Tower" is one of the best books you'll read! Rest is all online
I was really looking forward to taking Global Politics. However, his lectures are extremely off-topic and difficult to follow. He tends to ramble, as well as continuously cutting off student questions with his own opinions. I wish I'd taken this class with a different prof who talked less about himself and more about the actual material.
Great prof! Never seen such enthusiasm from a prof. HE HAS STRONG OPINIONS. My friends (not registered in the class) would come to class with me EVERY TIME just because he is so interesting and made the course content really fun. Best class I've taken in my 4-5 year engg. program at UBC (this was an elective). Gives out exam questions beforehand
Lectures are difficult to follow because he goes on so many tangents
Awesome lectures! He can sometimes be polarizing, but it's refreshing to have a prof he isn't afraid to share his true thoughts and why he believes in them. Really smart guy, background in economics and currently specializes in terrorism, can talk to him about nearly anything going on in the world. No textbook, but lots of reading online 1010 prof
Definitely one of the best courses I have taken at UBC so far. I failed the midterm but still managed to get a high B+ overall in my final grade. TAs mark everything (might be different for summer term). Easy 20% for participation in discussion as long as you pre-read the articles that he posts on his site. Love attending his lectures, super fun!
Farkasch is always animated in the class which makes the lecture enjoyable. He tends to go on in lot of tangents and so you have to be very focused in the lectures to follow. But he also has his own website with all his class notes, which is super helpful; & will provide you with possible questions for the midterm & final. It's a great class!
The lectures and the course in general are intellectually stimulating and extremely interesting. Best class i have ever taken.
Best Prof at UBC!!!!Took two classes with Dr Farkasch because he is so inspirational and puts passion in what he teaches. He also encourages participation and independent thinking, but most importantly, he cares about students' learning. If he sees you are willing to learn and ask for help or feedback, he is super involved. Highly recommend!!!
Farkasch made my entire semester, his lectures are very animated and keep you engaged, while he may go off on tangents he uses those to help you better understand the concepts in simpler terms. He's been one of the most approachable Profs I've had so far in my degree. I cannot say enough good things about him.
Prof Farkasch was the best Poli Sci prof I've had at UBC. He does ramble & go off tangents, but if you pay attention, you'll realize the info is relatable to the course and useful in the papers and exams. He will teach you better writing skills and how to become a better critical thinker. Don't take if you're just looking to regurgitate information
Very energetic and engaged in his lectures and his work. Farkasch takes whatever opportunities he can to engage with his students, and is a genuinely nice dude. Take all the courses with him that you can and pay attention in lectures - not only will you do well, but you'll actually enjoy school.
Farkasch is hands down one of the most engaging professors at UBC, it's practically guaranteed that you won't be bored in lecture. He's always willing to chat during office hours as well. Toughest part of the course is easily the midterm (time limit), but it's fairly easy to do well overall as long as you're paying attention throughout the term.
Farkasch makes every class interesting with real examples and personal experiences. While he can be a little scattered at times, and you have to stay on top of the readings he was engaging and memorable. I leave every lecture feeling as though I've actually learnt something that I can apply right away.
Rob is really engaging, and while his lectures are interesting, he often gets side tracked. Sometimes it seems as though what he's saying has no relevance to the course material. He's super nice and approachable, but his midterm and final are quite difficult. You must do ALL of the readings.
Lectures are very engaging. He does go on a bit of a tangent, but that keeps things fun. Lecture notes are posted online, along with readings and potential midterm & final questions. Everything is straightforward. 10/10 would take another class with him.
Really interesting guy with quite controversial opinions, lectures hard to follow at times as he goes on so many tangents and doesn't use powerpoint (just a word doc of notes on the projector). Really makes you think critically and tests are all essays, don't take this class if you're looking to memorize info. Very interesting and engaging material
Farkasch is by far one of the best professors I've had at UBC. His lectures are fun an engaging, and he makes a point to challenge your perspective and way of thinking. Sure, he can go off on tangents, but if you go along with it, you might actually get something really valuable out of them. I will definitely take another class with him.
I took his 369D class and thought 464C would be on international security as well, but it was on economic development. Thought of dropping the course but glad I didn't. He cares a lot, gives great feedback, and individually contacts each student to coach them in their writing and get them ready for grad school. My highest recommendation for a prof!
I thought 369 would be an interesting course but the prof ruined it for me. Lectures are all over the place and he goes off on a lot of tangents Should've skipped this course when I had the chance Take it only if you're really interested in the topic itself Has a lot of readings that re-state the same ideas over and over again
Farkasch is a really odd prof. Classes have no real structure, he mostly just rambles for the full time and comes off as a bit of a conspiracy theorist. This class wasn't that tough to do alright in but hard to achieve a really high mark in. No textbook and pretty few readings, almost the entire grade was midterm/final/essay.
An incredible professor who inspired me to pursue my MA in Security Studies. I was challenged to really understand the roots of terrorism. Thank You!
Highly intelligent but gets sidetracked so easily you really have to work to understand what the lecture is actually about.
The course is VERY unorganized and he goes off on so many tangents but if you pay attention he actually brings up v interesting ideas. Fun prof and is not afraid to say controversial things but in a respectful way. Dont have to study much for this class
I learned so much from the really interesting readings and the insightful lectures from Robert. Yes, he goes off on rants, but I never missed a class and hope to work with him and his ideas again soon. Easy A if you do the readings because you know the exam questions ahead of time
Robert is an engaging lecturer and the class is interesting but I would warn students of colour. This man loves racist conspiracy theories especially about Islam and Black Lives Matter. It's very simple once you understand that he believes class differences outweigh racial oppression and has no empathy for people of colour.
The best professor in my 4 years at UBC. Took him for multiple classes and each one was a highlight of my degree. An extremely engaging and passionate lecturer that doesn't shy away from tough, uncomfortable topics. A professor that embodies what uni is about: challenging ideas and finding the truth. A 10/10 recommendation
His lecture style is extremely confusing at first, he does not follow the textbook, readings, or notes strictly. He is very dynamic and challenges your beliefs. Lectures are not the most important to attend because the grades come from papers and tutorial, but he will remember you and call you out. He engages with students, shares stories and music
Farkasch is a decent guy who usually offers humorous anecdotes, however his lectures have little structure and can be tedious for note-taking. They may be fascinating to some, but I suspect most simply find them tough to gain anything substantial. The (many) readings and term paper offered more than the lectures, in my opinion.
I do not understand what the obsession with Farkasch is. His lectures are unstructured and not thought-provoking. He has a weird cult following that is obsessed with him.. but missing the fact that he really doesn't actually teach you that much. His feedback is confusing and he contradicts himself a lot.. Would not recommend
Farkasch said grades and comments on our term papers, which he had 19 days to mark, would be released by the final exam, but they were not. So, going into the final we only knew 30% of our final grade, which was from the midterm, and lacked comments on our term papers, which would have assisted with final exam prep. Lectures also go waaay of topic.
Just dont take his course. His lectures are all over the place, course site is unorganized and he doesnt show much care for students or material.
Fantastic Prof - great lectures, knows his stuff and cares about students. A bit heavy on readings but lectures are full of energy and detail.
Pretty bad. He is competent as an instructor, but the material he chooses is selective. The class amounts to ideological disciplining. He has a background in the Canadian military and a very right-wing outlook, and incorporates those into the class heavily.
By far one of the best POLI profs I've ever encountered. Class is never dull and he is a very interesting person, I rarely agreed with his views and he loved that we were also discussing. I would take another class with him in a heartbeat. I and a couple of other students always stayed after class for an hour and just talk to him about everything!
His teaching style really made me question the way I thought about things.. He teaches you to not only argue one side, not only is he very smart and respected but also engaged the class in an interesting way! honestly its reading heavy but pretty spread out so not hard to catch up.. havent gotten marks yet but lectures were so fun i dont regret it!
Roberts lectures are not useful. He rants the entire time and interrupts students - it's because he's passionate but all the notes and lectures are online. Got a B+ in this class and never went. He gives you midterm & exam questions before hand. He's rly nice, class just felt like a waste of time. Exams are solely based on readings.
Dr. Farkasch's thought provoking lectures and interesting anecdotes made me view international affairs differently. Dr. Farkasch is friendly and responds to questions after class and during office hours. I would 100% take this class again due to Dr. Farkasch's inspirational lectures and its relation to several specialisations (POLI SCI for me).
At first, I was skeptical because his lectures and slides are a mess and he often interrupts students who express different opinions in class... But finally he turned out to be one of the best profs I've ever had. Lot of readings but they're all on interesting and recent topics. Lectures and tutorials are thought-provoking. 100% would recommend!
Not an awful prof, with lectures that were usually interesting. My main gripe with him is the patronizing attitude he had towards anyone with a different opinion than him, it made participating hard. And his grading criteria was all over the place. The final paper was a book review about a book that hardly connected with the course topic.
you want to pass? notes + exam q's are posted online, do the readings, write the papers. But if you really listen, Farkasch debates you, challenges your paradigm, and thinks along with you for questions he doesn't know. Yes he's dramatic, but that's just his shock factor. Very clear about deadlines, and understanding if you have genuine reasons.
DON'T TAKE IN SUMMER. Worst term of my LIFE. Classes 2x a week, 300-word discussion post due every class, must read 4-8 articles to answer them, one week we were assigned 200 pages, 2-4 days to complete. Final and paper due on the same day before formal exam period. Final is 2.5 hrs for 3 essays. Not understanding when students had a hard time.
The best professor, so fun! He makes you think critically and reflect on your beliefs, may challenge you in class, but respectfully. you learn the material basically yourself through the articles he assigns, but they are necessary for the midterm/final. Lecture usually go off topic, so readings are a must. gives u the mid/final q's ahead of time
Took his class over the summer and really enjoyed it, although there was a lot of readings and work for the class. He's very passionate and always willing to help if you have any questions. Overall, great prof with very engaging lectures!
Dr. Farkasch is a really engaging lecturer--however, he makes you read A LOT and his lectures (although they are fun to listen to) don't relate to the course content as much and what he's gonna grade you on. This class is fun to take if you can afford to spend time reading. Main caveat is, the prof is pretty unorganized, so take at your own risk
Weekly discussion boards require heavy participation throughout the week, the TA wouldn't give any feedback about how you did and only give a very precise grade, such as 8.2 or 7.9. Prof made u read 10+ articles per week, plus exams were hard and he gave way too many assignments considering its COVID. No clear guidelines for assignments
Farkasch "prepares" us for law school even if we don't want to be. Expect 2000 word midterms/90 mins. to write, 40 pg. readings for weekly discussion posts you'll never get 10/10 on (as a rule) & exclusively American views on global politics. Condescending, unorganized and unsympathetic. Got COVID problems? Too bad, it's probably your fault. Avoid.
I have no doubt that he is a good man OUTSIDE of lectures, but as a prof, he is by-far the worst prof that I've ever had so far. 5-ish articles for 250-words discussion posts weekly, the exams were almost intentionally stressful for students and he wasn't rly open to criticisms. I like him as a person, not as a prof.
Please, please please! Avoid this professor at all costs. He made me wanna scream! Out of all the professors I've had here at UBC, he has been the most unsympathetic towards his students. Before reducing the work load, the original expectation for the final was to write on 3/4 questions, 1500 words each (4500 words), with only 2.5 hrs! Howw???
Please, please, please! Avoid this professor. He's completely unsympathetic, does not communicate efficiently and worst of all, sets unrealistic exam expectations. We had to plead with him to reduce the workload TWICE! for the mid-term and final. I enjoy Politics but this has been my worst professor so far, here at UBC. He made me wanna scream!
Don't take this class, he doesn't let you talk to the TA out of "objectivity" but it costs you your grade because a huge part in a good paper/assignment is talking it out with the person that's gonna be GRADING it. Also very unsympathetic. If you want to take him cause he's a good lecturer, skip the class and just watch a TEDx talk
how does UBC let him be a prof? you can't talk to TA for feedback, you have random discussions posts that he does not plan out or tell you about before the term so you can plan things out, and he is so arrogant. Dr. F is the epitome of pretentiousness and that'll show in the grade you receive for his class. don't take this class. AVOID AT ALL COST
A super disorganized class. His expectations were ridiculous (for midterm we were expected to write 6000 words in 3 days). He would ridicule students for asking genuine questions. Weirdly, he clearly cares about his students and I think he's a nice person. Maybe he's better in person? Just don't take his classes online, you will regret it.
Robert had a tendency to digress into stories that was faintly related to the lecture material. It felt very loose on what we had to absorb but nonetheless, as long as you keep up with the readings and understand the general concept, you should be fine. His readings are incredibly HEAVY so I do warn students with a full term to plan ahead.
If you're a shy student, Prof F will come off as a bit intimidating. He puts on an act where he wants to seem like he cares for his student but doesn't do much to accommodate, especially in the pandemic. There were online discussions every week and (lots of) assigned readings. I didn't find them too bad since most of the readings were news articles
Didn't give any feedback on our final exam, which he graded, while the midterm that the TA graded gave us feedbacks on our responses and how we could improve. I would have liked some feedback on my final, but since Prof F can be somewhat intimidating to talk to, I didn't bother to ask.
Dr. F is somehow simultaneously a nice person and rude at the same time. His lectures seem supplementary to the heavy reading load. The "300" word weekly responses end up being an essay because there are 20 readings a week. One of my favourite classes, but such a heavy workload for the level of return.
So much reading to do, but this class is so interesting! I really like his perspective on what we discussed in class - it was very balanced. He definitely is opinionated and isn't afraid to tell you what he thinks but I really appreciate that. He definitely cares about his students, although he may be a bit brash sometimes.
Horrible class and horrible teaching. Completely tangential, makes absolutely no sense. The material is easy enough, scored well on exams without too much stress. Is almost too close with his favourite students in a way that seems inappropriate and unprofessional. Not sure how he's a professor. Waste of 3 credits and time.
Professor Farkasch is easily my favourite professor ever. His lectures are interesting and compelling and the content is compelling. Farkasch cares so much about his students he replies fast to emails and will take time out of any day to call you if you need help. That said there is a ton of readings and you do have to do them all lol
He is a good instructor. He knows the course material very well and passes his passion to us. Did not give feedback after final exam as well. He could've made more actions to make students engage with the course, but probably this is because of the online nature of the class. I'd recommend taking at least a course from him if you are a POLI major
Professor Farkasch is one of the best professors that I have had throughout my time at UBC. He is so caring and wants his students to learn and succeed. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches and encourages participation. You do have to put in the work to do well in the class, but I would take this course again and again because of him.
Lectures feel sort of meaningless and often he goes on tangents that have very little to do with the course material. This will most likely be my last poli sci class.
Not a very good prof. His lectures are unclear, with few concrete points being made. Moreover, he often rambles on about things unrelated to our course, discussing irrelevant details and anecdotes about his personal life. I wanted to like him given other ratings here and looked forward his course, but came up disappointed. Not recommended.
Robert is the sweetest prof ive had. The lectures can be long and so can the readings but overall you can tell he cares about his students .
Dr. Farkasch often goes off on tangents, and what your graded on is often unrelated to the lecture material. Paper heavy and reading heavy; if you're good at writing papers and don't plan on going to lecture, Farkasch is your guy. Funny and nice professor but lectures can feel redundant at times.
Professor Farkasch is a one-of-a-kind professor, and I would highly recommend taking this class with him whether or not you're a polisci student. He gives a fresh perspective on the topics he teaches and really forces you to think critically about the subject matter. You'll leave his lectures actually having learned something.
Professor Farkasch is extremely helpful and there for his students. He truly wants you to succeed and also has very interesting engaging lectures.
Easily the worst professor Ive ever had at UBC. Completely unprofessional, seems obsessively involved with his students lives and tends to go on lengthy tangential rants that have little to do with course material. The material is interesting enough but he makes it way less engaging
if u want a prof who goes on mindless tangents, is lowkey condescending, gives a godforsaken amount of readings & weekly long af discussion posts, and is not clear about his expectations, then this is your guy! He seems like an ok guy outside of class, but not a good prof. Teaches some interesting courses but won't be taking him after this
Amazing prof! The course can be a bit difficult but Bob really cares about the students.
One of the better poli profs. Lots of readings but every reading just adds more to the course and is relevant to his lectures. He presents info in a manner that is easy to understand and often invites further thinking. His lectures are funny and he genuinely cares about teaching and the students in his class. Grading is clear and straightforward.
Dr. Farkasch is an outstanding professor. The class is challenging in that it causes you to confront biases, which not everyone is ready to do. I didn't agree with his every take, but he always fostered an environment for discussion and acknowledged/encouraged diverse opinions. Great class, great prof. But you have to work for your grade.
Farkasch is the best! No one is better at engaging a class in his lectures than him. Be prepared to academically challenge yourself and your beliefs in his classes and don't be afraid to ask for constructive feedback. His classes are a must for any aspiring political science students :)
A great orator, fun lectures, and you will learn a lot in his class.
I took POLI 260 with Prof. Farkasch between Jan-April 2011, in my second year at UBC. He was enthusiastic and one could see he enjoyed teaching. He was also low-key funny when he'd go off on tangents during his lectures. However, he was empathetic towards the needs of his students, and was always willing to listen. Top guy!
POLI 439A is probably the best POLI course I've taken at UBC. More practical knowledge here than the majority of POLI courses I've taken combined. A lot of reading, but it is expected in a 400-level course. Farkasch is great and the classroom was very respectful and welcoming. Would highly recommend this course. Thanks for a great term!
You will either love or hate Farkasch He's a funny lecturer that really challenges your perceptions of terrorism - I definitely learned a lot from this course.Lots of readings and canvas discussion board questions, but you will do well in the course if you can handle these. Final exam was simple, he gives you all the tools you will need to succeed.
Content is interesting, but he is extremely unclear on his course expectations; very annoying when he would claim he's open to "nuanced" opinions but actually expects a specific answer. No structure(no syllabus!), which is reflected in his lecture style that goes off on tangents and condescending at times. Unavailable,no office hours, no extension.
His perspectives on geopolitical affairs at least hold the illusion of being a little more "nuanced" than his perspectives on veganism, which he got into spat fights over with several students in the class. That's not saying much.
Watch out before you apply for his courses, he is very inconsistent with what he said in class. Make sure to record whatever he said as evidence to refute his inconsistency
Farkasch's POLI 376 class is brand new but enjoyable if you make it. The introduction to Int. Law confirmed my aspirations for law school. Papers were rewarding and the group project was hard to coordinate but very fun in the end. For the course debut, I thought it was well done. More engaging than 378 IMO. Lots of reading for discussion posts.
He will not remain neutral in his politics lectures so expect a course heavily biased and focused on certain aspects (such as veganism) by which he abides. Course has no consistency or structure and it is very easy to get lost. Avoid this prof if you can
While I like professors who are authentic, this man takes it too far and his lectures become plagued with bias. He keeps pushing his personal beliefs and values on students. I felt like his lectures were a landmine of PERSONAL OPINIONS presented as FACTS. I also disliked how the films shown in class featured only Arab "terrorists". AVOID HIM!
Prof. Farakash is one of my favourite profs at UBC. He truly challenged me and pushed against my biases. He has nurtured in me a deeper understanding of people's motivations, ideals vs reality and how to create strong arguments. I have taken 3 classes and can never get enough. Although he pushes you, I have never felt more cared for by a prof.
Zionist sympathiser, supporter of an apartheid regime. It terms the palestine-israel apartheid as conflict justifying Ethnic cleansing and supporter of Israeli state. Avoid this class!
This prof supports zionism by calling it a "conflict" between a terrorist state and a "democracy" rather than an apartheid. I did not like how he did not give the students a chance to discuss and rather kept cutting them.
By far the most biased and unprofessional professor I've ever had, and every lecture is a rant about his personal beliefs and has nothing to do with the pricey textbook he told us to buy. His lessons are impossible to follow, and he makes us feel extremely uncomfortable by imposing his views on us. Taking his class is my biggest academic regret.
Prof. Farkasch, like any great Political Science instructor, encourages students to think critically and consider alternative approaches and viewpoints. Students who are personally affected by Prof. Farkasch sharing his views should reconsider if they have the critical thinking skills necessary for studying Political Science (or IR).
He is very passionate about what he speaks about, and there is definitely a bias in what he preaches, though he is cognizant of this and disclaims that he is. He has challenged my preexisting views, and although that may make some people uncomfortable, I find that it is a crucial part of higher education.
Thought he gave a bit of an elitist vibe. Didn't find him super helpful and anytime I emailed him I was afraid of the response being condescending. It was a summer course so I didn't have to interact with him a lot a lot.
Zionist to the core, always finds a way to include his views and make others seem like bad people. I will say that he is not a bad lecturer and is obviously intelligent and educated, too bad he uses his knowledge in a harmful way.
Farkash's passionate teaching style was engaging in International Law, but Politics of Terrorism has been riddled in monologues, bias presented as fact, and a concerning lecture post-October 7th. His lectures become subjective rants, where he stifles questions/ comments & evades objectivity/ diverse argumentation that define good Poli Sci courses.
He is extremely islam-phobic!
His lectures are more like unfiltered rants that belong on a podcast. Felt like I was hearing more about his daughter than the course content. Worked for the US military and it shows. Very pro-military, pro-US, and pro-zionism. Made weird statements about Indigenous people...
He's definitely polarizing. His lectures have bias but I like how he challenges your worldview in a way you might agree or disagree with. If you're planning to major in POLI/IR, you should expect that and have an open mind. But, I can't stand the way he lectures. His "slides" are vague and he rambles a lot. Difficult to write class notes.
Not a review concerning his "zionist" allegations or any of that. Robert is a great person and is not any of the things he's being accused of, but the bottom line is simply... he's just not a good professor. Readings are interesting but LONG and many are paywalled which was so annoying to navigate. Lectures he goes on tangents and are boring.
Readings are interesting but often paywalled, lectures are disorganized and self-pitying... would have been a stronger course if not for the condescending treatment of students.
Dr. Farkasch was an absolute pleasure to have as a prof. Final exam was very fair, but my only small critique was wishing the midterm paper (a take home) and final paper linked more with the material. The one huge thing I appreciate about him is the allowance for debate about topics and issues in relation to the material. By far one of the best.
He is very condescending and gets really off-topic to the point that it's easier to just learn it on your own but he will expect you to use what you heard in lecture to answer exam questions. He also curved participation grades which makes no sense and he prides himself on being such a "difficult" prof. His ego in too big and it ruined the class.
A hilarious professor who will challenge your views. If you would like to be in an echo box, then this is not the class or professor for you. A great conversationalist, you will have to back up your beliefs and view points.
Prof. Farkasch is funny & caring. He is opinionated but open to discussions. Prepare yourself to read a lot and write discussion posts weekly. If you attend lectures & actually participate + don't fall behind on the readings, you'll find yourself engaged and rolling with the course. He enticed me into coming to class and I'm an avid skipper so...
It is clear that he cares deeply about his students and their well-being. He does have a propensity to go off on tangents, however everything that was on exams was well covered in lectures.
The professor has a strong personality but can be hit-or-miss. Lectures tend to veer off-topic, so it's best to supplement with the free textbook and tools like unstuckstudy for efficient study prep. Overall, the class is manageable with effort.
Learned a lot in this class, especially about biases and prioritizing facts over feelings. He loves to connect with students and had many phone calls with him during this course. He cares a lot about what students think about the course. He does jump around in topics during his lectures. There are many assignments to get your grades up if needed.
Fair amount of reading and lectures can be dry since the prof reads off of a google doc, but overall engaging material and amazing professor. Farkasch cares a lot about his students, and his interactions with the class and creative assignments make this very clear. The group project at the end of term was difficult but highly rewarding and fun.
The content was interesting, but the professor is just okay. He doesn't use PowerPoint slides but presents his lecture notes, which would be fine if he were more organized and focused. He tends to go on tangents and gets easily distracted, making his lectures hard to follow. There are lots of readings to engage with, but they are interesting.
Dr. Farkasch is an acquired taste. While I found him engaging, I would not blindly recommend him to any student who wants to do well. There are no easy grades in this class, even the discussions and self-reflections. Reach out to Dr. Farkasch and the TA throughout the course to make sure that you are on the right track and you should be okay.
If you're a CFA student, Farkasch is your dream prof. He is incredibly understanding and super lenient in extensions. 376 is super interesting, and he's good and engaging lecturer. There's no final, and instead there are 2 papers and a final project. My only critique is that he's a bit of a harsh grader, but show up to class and you'll be fine.
He is an incredible lecturer and makes the content engaging- I will give him that. But man is he ever bias. He has his favourites and if you are not one of them, your grade falls victim to his lack of interest in you. Claims to care about everyone but it is very subjective. Also makes some questionable and touchy pop culture and political comments
Very kind and gives lots of personal feedback. He has interesting/controversial perspectives, but seminars felt like us discussing with him, not with ourselves. He says crazy stuff sometimes, but I think it is to encourage us to challenge him. I would've liked more class engagement and small group work.
Farkasch is a good prof, his lectures are engaging, and the course content is interesting. He is very neutral on terrorism as a topic which is good. He is a tough grader, and unless you're registered with the CFA or get a concession he won't give extensions. Going to his office hours for help with assignments can help with getting better marks.
Very kind professor and easily accessible outside of class.
You either love him or you hate him. I personally really enjoyed the class and found it really interesting. While Farkash has his biases and beliefs, I respect his willingness to entertain and teach opposing worldviews in a very constructive manner. Tests are HARD but if you are active in class, your grade might get curved without even asking.
In all my years attending university I have never encountered such a self-centred, narcissistic professor. He tries to be funny when he calls out people is a very tough grader, but does not provide any feedback. When people inquire about grading, he simply says "that's not my problem".
Either he likes you or he'll be rude. Het let his TA handle grading but with unclear grading criteria, I received weirdly specific grades but never got a feedback. His syllabus and modules are messy, hence lectures can be unfocused and repetitive, which I feel like could be improved if he paid more effort. Very cynical and a Zionist btw
Great and funny person, and entertaining lecturer. Hes very knowledgable. Lots of readings, and a his slide are messy. His lectures can veer and steer in many different way. Grading criteria on papers aren't very clear, and there is no feedback on graded work.
Hands down best prof for Poli Sci at UBC. Extremely helpful in office hours, provides great feedback, and is genuinely a great person. Tough grader and u need to work for your grade, but it's so worth the extra effort. Couldn't recommend Farkasch enough - be prepared to be challenged, pushed, and questioned.
Dr.Farkasch is an amazing professor; I have had him for three courses and he definitely pushes the limits of your critical thinking, providing you with articles from all different perspectives. Very reading and writing heavy.
Just don't. So much to say that won't fit in here. If you have to take his class, keep up with readings, go to lectures (important for final), and go to discussions. Your TA will make or break this class (mine was amazing), but he's just not a good prof.
Respectfully, don't take a class with this prof. He's an interesting lecturer but often goes off on incoherent tangents unrelated to the course. Truly learned more from my TA than the professor but even the TA's find his style and grading ridiculous. Some of the most arbitrary grading.
