Impossible to listen to - monotone and slow. He always has this horrible white spittle clinging too the sides of his mouth and you can't concentrate on anything else. Tests can be unreasonable.

Half of the people posting these reviews obviously people who didnt ever go to class and made poor exams grades. Dr. Finlay is a good professor. He knows his material and he has been around the world and seen many of the things he lectures upon.

Went to class and managed to stay awake even though there were several students knocking off and snoring during his lectures. I found his lectures to be very boring---he repeated himself continuously!!! Study guides are a joke and so is he!!!

Tests are ONE question which he adresses to you out loud, quiz bowl style. The papers seem easy but when you get your grade back you realize he's an extremely biased grader. Too inconsistent and not at all based on your effort-avoid at all costs.

Very unhelpful and biased, even if you talk to him about problems. Tests were worth like 25% of the grade even though he said "don't worry too much about them."

You can't understand him, he's not helpful and talks about things that don't pertain to the course. He needs to let people know what he thinks is important when talking about the topics b/c he is never clear. His study guides are useless, and I even studied the tests on the book online, it's bad..

The only good thing I can say is that his class provided me with an extra hour and 20 minutes of naptime every tuesday and thursday. His lectures have nothing to do with anything as far as your grade is concerned, so don't bother taking notes or listening.

Pretty laid back class. Quiz bowl type tests, sure beats essay exams. Just read what you're supposed to and you'll be fine.

Prof Finlay was an awesome teacher--he explains the material extremely thoroughly and makes class interesting because of the crazy amount of knowledge he has on anything related to western civ..every class period i sat there amazed at what all he knows. make sure and take good notes!

If I stay longer than 5 mins I fall asleep. His test are random and have nothing to do with the notes or the book. He is a PhD teaching an intro class that he gets bored with. I do not recommend taking him. Good Luck

Tests are impossible to prepare for. Study guides are no help at all. The test might cover 300 pages of material from the test. It is impossible to study for. Also, only teacher that I had to force myself to listen to for 90 minutes twice a week.

Probably the worst teacher I have ever had and ever will have. Not to mention how rude he is to the students. He is a miseable teacher and I would straight run the other way before taking this class with him.

Speaks way too fast, cant tell whats important or not.He wont let you record his lecutres.He told me that "I needed to learn how to take notes and that is what im here to teach you" FUNNY cause i thought i was taking WC. I didnt think i was paying out of state fees to learn how to take notes.

He's a lot better than the first WC professor that I had. He is a bit hard to understand and it's hard to study for his exams, but overall he was a pretty good teacher. Just keep up with the readings and you'll be okay.

The lecture was fairly pointless but mandatory. Almost nothing covered in class was on exams or helpful in writting assignments. Test were simple and group format with jepordy style questions-just had to read text book. writing assignments were easily graded but required a good amount of reading.

Not sure what everyone else is complaining about. Lectures were usually very interesting and well-planned. Does a good job of explaining overarching trends in history and cause-and-effect rather than just rattling off facts. Went to class every day, took terrible notes, didn't read text, made an A.

I took Finlay first semester for WCIV1. Most of his lectures on Ancient Rome and Greece are very interesting. Also great lecture on Christianity. I made an A. HOWEVER. Second semester, I loathed his class. I found his lectures boring and pointless. Extremely hard to study for the tests. The exam material seemed to be chosen at random. My only B

Ok, this guy is so boring! He has this horrbile accent that makes him hard to understand. Class was in the Sci/Eng auditorium and he didn't use the mic. so no one could hear him. The material was really interesting, just not him. The tests were outlandish (even though with lots of studying I pulled a B). Take this class, just not him!

He expects too much reading both in class and outside of class. It's hard to keep up when you're expected to read a book a week, plus 75+ pages of outside reading per class day. Also, he put so much emphasis on class participation that it hurt my grade, rather than helping it out.

The class wasn't that hard, but in order for you to make a good grade it is very imparative that you come to class and read the text book. If you do both of things, your good to go.

His class was so hard to pay attention to if you don't really like history. I had it in SEAU0104 and he would dim the lights and show things like maps during the entire lecture. With the lights off, nothing interesting to look at, and his accent his class felt like it would never end!

This is the only class I have ever received a B in. There are only 3 test and they are never over his ridiculously boring lectures. Horible class....it is impossible to pay attention.

Boring class, I never went to class after the first test and made an A. He gives a 6 point curve on all 3 tests and the tests seem to come out of the textbook so reading is a must. He seemed really full of himself, and thought himself clever with his hoplite beer joke so much so that it was a bs answer choice on at least 10 questions a test. easy A

Had for HWorldCiv. Grading is not so much easy as it is random. I only got 1 quiz bowl question right all year and barely made a 90 on the mc tests, and I still got an A. Other people seemed to do much better and got B's. Great guy though. Funny. Interesting lectures, I thought (which you aren't tested over). Highly recommended unless banking on A.

Dont know what ppl are complaining about. not hard to understand, just a new england-y accent. lectures aren't thrilling but, hello its a history class. only took notes when he mentioned a name or event or something he repeated/spelled out. used wikipedia for the study guide, read the 1st paragraph on it for each term/person. not a hard class

He seems like he would be a generally funny and nice guy outside of class, but if you dont like history he definately will NOT keep your attention. Tests wouldnt be bad if I could understand him better. Must read book!! Lectures cross subjects in the book but do not cover the book... not that bad of a class...just hard to stay awake!!!

Very boring class and hard o understand his accent. Lectures aren't very informative and attendance isn't necessary. You must read the book! I made C's on the first two tests then didn't come to class for a month but read the book and aced the last test so it rounded to a B.

I thought this class was excellent, history is boring people unless you like it. He trys to crack jokes but they arent funny. There are only 3 choices on each test question and one of them is bogus so you have a50/50 shot on every question. use wikipedia it helps if you miss class

Awesome teacher i thought i bombed the 1st test but i got a B. Love this man he is super nice and wants every one to do well! I got a B in his class and i never went just read info on the internet and your golden! He dose have a weird accent but he is incredibly smart! TAKE HIM!!!!!! you wont regret it!!!!

Ok, so class is really boring and his accent is really hard to understand at first but he will ask questions from the retarded stuff he covers. For sure read the book! and read it carefully! Make sure that you fill out the study guides, he will definately ask questions about those words.

I went to his class 4 times: the first day, and for each of the three tests, and I got a B. Obviously, if you just use the study guides and read the book, you will be fine. I couldn't understand a word he said in class (weird accent)and it was impossible to stay focused (sooo boring, especially if history isn't your thing)

You have to read the book. The lectures are boring and he's difficult to understand, but if you write down key terms and names and read the book then you'll be great on the tests. You don't have to go to class but it does help some. He's a nice guy, just not the easiest teacher to listen to for an hour and a half.

hard to understand at times but other than that it's a breeze. No need to buy the book you'll never use it, just go to the review before the tests and maybe a few classes in between and you'll be fine.

Hard to understand! If you have A.D.D. DON'T take this class! His lectures are boring. I fell asleep almost every time in that class. No essays. Only 3 tests. Not bad, unless you bomb the tests.

Nice guy, can be humorous. Super boring. He is super repetitive. Spends entire lecture talking about the pictures on his slides. Difference in going to class is truly the difference in an A and a B... I got a B... GO TO Class, even if it is to play solitaire, it'll still helps! If review is offered, go!

Finlay is a nice guy but his lectures are extremely boring and the test questions are extremely random. Go to the review session if one is offered. It helps tremendously. Also, read some of the chapters before the test and you will do fine. His test only have three answer options and he doesn't have different versions of the test.

I loved Finlay. He was an interesting man and tries to be entertaining. The class was kinda boring, however attendance wasn't required. You could never go to class or study and still get a B. I would recommend studying though because who doesn't love A grades?

He is terrible. Talks the entire time. Does not give you powerpoint notes, but rather expects you to pay attention and write down what he says. His tests are completely random...but there aren't different versions..so if you have a smart friend......Word to the wise...Take someone else.

Terrible. If you have to take the class take another teacher. He is impossible to understand and never teaches what he will test over. He gets side tracked and it all goes down hill from there. If you do have him STUDY THE BOOK and dont go to class.

I never went to class. He is extremely knowledgeable. He knows his stuff and will lecture about everything that is irrelevant to the tests. Just remember all of the history you had in high school and you will do fine in the class. I pulled off a B and never went to class.

I love Finlay. He is so funny and really knows his stuff. I had to skip a couple of weeks of class due to family issues and still came out with a B. If you want an easy history class where you do not have to work hard/read/study, then this class is the right one for you. You won't regret taking this blow off class.

Most boring class ever. I slept through every class. This was the perfect opportunity to schedule my naps in. Although I never stayed awake, I still managed to get a B in the class.

He wasn't prepared for class lecture to teach, he may know a lot but he is not able to teach it and if your asking for assistant forget about it because he will answer you with rude remarks and his power point was't helpful

Everyday you will take notes from Powerpoint slides and pictures. His tests are RANDOM! They don't cover the notes most of the time AND they will have stuff you haven't gone over yet and stuff from the previous test. I went to class less than 10 times and I made a "B" just by Wikipediaing the terms he gives you to study...

Finlay is amazing!!!!! His class is very boring but if you pay attention long enough he will say something totally outlandish. He knows his stuff and his baldness is what attracted me to go to his class at all. Test are very general not specific so it should be an easy A or B

Ridiculously easy class. His tests are all multiple choice, with only three options (one of which is usually obviously absurd). I got a 100% on the first test without studying, and I think I left with a 98 overall. He's a pretty interesting lecturer, but I could kind of tell that this wasn't a class he wanted to be teaching.

I don't know how people thought it was easy. I studied my ass off and got a C in the class. He covers MANY boring DETAILS in class, & the study guides did not help me b/c the test is broad. I even tried to read the book some & still wasn't able to get a B. I love history, I am thinking about making it my minor, but he just didn't keep my interest.

Finlay is very easy. I got a b for not going to class and never studying for it. Which is nice considering all the harder classes (chemistry) that I was taking. Take him for a nice class you can spend at Brough.

Lectures are extremely boring. I tried so many days to stay awake in that class but was not successful. The exams are multiple guess as he would say. Easy B. If you have some knowledge of western civ going in, then an A isn't extremely difficult either.

DO NOT TAKE FINLAY FOR WORLD CIV! We have a class of 300 and only THREE made A's on the first exam (Out of only 3 exams). WORLD civ is new and the tests have FOUR possible answer choices, and VIGOROUS study of the book is mandatory. I studied over 32 hours for first exam and only got a 72. And that is 33% of grade. DO NOT TAKE WORLD CIV W/ FINLAY.

I LOVE Professor Finlay! I have him for an honors seminar class, and he is a really great and knowledgeable professor. I have friends who have him for WCIV1 and hate him, but if you are good with analytical thinking and writing, Finlay is of the best quality. Definitely will have to work hard!

Studied pretty hard for the tests and didn't come away with a great grade. His tests are too hard and detailed, not as concept based as he acts. Funny accent, but I don't think he understands he is teaching an intro course that shouldn't be so hard.

He wasn't very helpful. He never spoke about what he wanted in the paper we had to turn in for his class nor did he review for tests. Attendance is mandatory and so is speaking so if you are a person who hates to speak in class don't take him. He is awful. I loved history before this class but now I hate it. He is a total confidence killer

Went to class almost everyday, studied really hard for the final, and still did not pass the class. Lectures were very boring and sometimes pointless. Only three grades in this class, and are all tests, so you must do good on all three to get a good grade.

Extremely hard to follow. I dreaded sitting through his class. Use of technology is basically zero in a very large class, making it very hard to hear/understand. Smart guy, but I'd reccommend dropping this class if at all possible and getting a different teacher.

If you fail his class you don't belong in college. Didn't even buy the book and skipped several classes. Still got an A. His test are all multiple choice and questions only have 3 choices, one of which is obviously BS. If you don't do well in his this class drop out now. You have no hope.

The kind of guy you would want to sip brandy with and smoke fine cigars. Sort of an Anthony Hopkins type countenance. He is a wonderful educator. Don't believe the hype. His classes are very manageable. He is very well traveled and cultured. He's like that Dos Equis guy.

His test often feel simple while taking them but they cover such a large amount of material. His lectures are horrible. He only teaching what he's interested in and babbles on instead of following the book. I recommend taking this class from someone else...I made all A's but a C in his class.

Do not take him for World Civ. His lectures often have little to nothing to do with the actual test. He'll ramble on a subject for the entire class period with little or no relevance to the test. Made four A's and a D in his class. I repeat: DO NOT TAKE FOR WORLD CIV.
