Cool teacher, smart guy. Knew his stuff. I liked his teaching style. Presented history as a story and not so much as a lecture. Pretty funny as well. Three tests were bulk of grade. Grades fair. I recommend him!!!
Good guy. Lots of good stories of random history bits that related to the topics, made it intersting. Most the lectures were pretty much from the book, but it wasn't his normal history area. I really enjoyed the class, and the tests were easy enough if you read the material.
Good class. Learned alot about Europe. Three tests plus one project made up the grade. Mr. Flynn is smart, witty, funny, and extremely knowledgeable about his subject matter. Grades fair. I would really recommend enhancing your knowledge by studying history under him.
Horrible teacher. Unrealistic expectations for an online course. Extremely advanced material for an intro History class. Vast amounts of reading every week. Tests every week, and discussion boards too philosophical. I felt I didn't have time to absorb any information before we moved onto to a new chapter. Tough grading. His material would be more appropiate for a higher level history class. Teacher has no flexiblity. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE!!
Not good. Would not reccomend this course from him.
Hated this class. He may be a good teacher in person, but not very nice to take a class taught by him online. Not reccomended via this venue.
Great lecture. I enjoyed his class eventhough it was only one day a week and a three hour lecture. Instructor was clear on what he wanted and fair with course work. I hope he teaches other history courses so I can learn from him again.
I really liked his class. He is a very good lecturer. There is a lot of information he covers within one class period, and it is sometimes hard to remember it all, but as long as you attend class, keep up with the reading and study thoroughly for the tests, you will do alright. maybe i'm just biased. it helps that i thought he was handsome.
Be prepared for history via a firehydrant. Very detailed and enormous amount of information given. Print out the exam and essay preps before signing up and review them to see if you are willing to go to these limits. You will definately know the material if you work hard and get an A. He is fair and very by the book, you have been warned.
Be prepared to take alot of notes. His lectiures are straight forward and jammed with information. The tests are pretty tough, but with the study guides not impossible. Don't expect an A, I busted my hump for a B, but I learned alot about the topic. Not a class to take just to knock out some credits, you have to be interested or you'l get swmpe
I took his class via internet. He was not clear on assignments that were due. We had a 3-4 page paper due by the second week on a 400 page philosophy book. Not an easy A or even an easy B. He is kinda of a flake. Does not read his emails. Bad teacher via online. I have taken three 200 level history classes and only one compared to the difficulty.
It's hard to find a teacher who knows more about their subject than Flynn. His expectations are high and the class is chalenging, but that is exactly what I liked about the class. After five terms of nothing but A's at PCC, this was my only B, and It's the grade I'm most proud of.
If you have even a slight interest in the Middle East, definitely take Flynn. I noticed that others felt he was not clear on course expectations, I disagree, I found his lectures, tests, syllabus, etc, to be clear and to the point. He's an all around cool guy and has a sense of humor when discussing sensitive and controversial issues. Great class!!
Best lectures at PCC. Conveys massive amount of information w/ tightly ordered style. This class alone convinced me to stay in school. Attendance policy is a drag, but that applies to most of PCC. Otherwise, felt that students were treated with a respect and equality not common at the school. Tough exams, but beatable. We need more like you, Flynn.
I have never written so many notes in one class! Flynn gives amazing lectures. They're very well structured and organized. I found myself LOVING this class. You have to work hard, but the grades are fair, and you'll come away from the class having actually gained knowledge. Plus, Flynn's total eye candy.
Picky, picky, picky. You'd better read and memorise every word of the book to expect to get a decent grade on the papers or tests. I took the class online and got a B because my web connection went down for a few days, I missed a posting deadline by an hour, and he gave me an F for the week despite my otherwise fulfilling all the guidelines. Nice.
Well, Mr.Flynn is a very smart, witty teacher, he's also distractingly handsome. And if you like your professors to be strict, then I recommend him. But if you're looking for a relaxed class and an easy A, then he is definitely NOT for you. Also, if you do take his class, try and sit up front, his voice trails in and out..actually kind of cute.
An excellent professor. If you're looking for an easy A, don't take his class; Flynn wants you to learn, and he's the perfect teacher to make you do so! His lectures are awesome, his teaching style is grueling but rewarding and if you're looking for a teacher to really get you to think and not just regurgitate facts, then here he is. Awesome.
The instructor has the characteristic of "I am board out of my mind." Repetitive themes, "of the good old days" are presented by the instructor. Lacks enthusiasm, engagement, dialogue, feedback. Do not take class if you are an engagement type. Very sharp and clear in subjects. Enormous amounts of reading, atleast fifty pages per week.
Awesome Professor! I took his online class. He is committed to getting graded assignments back within within 24-48 hours. He checks his email over the weekend and is straight forward about his grading criteria. Flynn definitely challenges you and makes you work for your grade. This class is not easy but is rewarding.
Awful class online. Gave you the readings and instructions. No guidance or study guide. Gives you 60 minutes for a 50 question test! not enough time to think! I do not recommend taking his class online.
I thought he was an ok instructor when it came to lecturing. However, his reading assignments were very long and the exams were bluebook. The paper was given a topic from one of the books, how original. For a history class, the idea of taking an exam composed of essay questions was ludicrous. At a university, that is acceptable.
Definitely not an easy A, but I learned more from this class than any other so far. He knows the material inside and out and expects a lot from his students. History majors will love this class, but people looking to take a class just for credits should take another class.
He is a very knowledgeable person about history. Has a kind of twitch that someone I know found annoying but I think he is a great teacher, and can give you a sentence or a five minute speech on ANY question about the course you can think of. He made this a very fun class to take.
I tried this Professor twice, Hst 102 and Hst 203, Failed both, I have over 100 credit hours and have faied two classes, both Porf. Flynn, classes were very hard and his style confusing, writting papers that seemed to have little to do with what was read out of the text or in class. Very bad at communication and understanding the students needs.
Extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. Just make sure you show up everyday and are on time. Take notes and read the text- you'll be made in the shade. Also, bring a Monster or Rockstar, his voice can put you to sleep if you were out partying all night.
Professor Flynn is an amazing instructor! He is very intelligent and helpfull. He is a little more difficult than other PCC teachers, but in my opinion he is one of the only professors at PCC that instructs at a college level. I had his class at 9am and his dry humor and wit made this class a great one 1st thing in the morning!VERY INTERESTING!
Professor Flynn was one of the best instructors I've had at PCC, and this class was incredibly interesting thanks to Flynn's wit and intellect. I took this class at 9am, but it didn't seem like it at all. This class is difficult but fun and rewarding. I never saw anyone fall asleep or look bored.Recommended it if you are looking to really learn
I took HST 102 and am currently taking HST 103 and love this class. I am taking it online and love the way this class is formatted. This teacher answer questions and is always sending helpful emails. I plan on taking the HST 101 part of it and I would recommend this class to anyone.
Took both HST 102 and 103 online. It is difficult but rewarding. I love this teacher and if you have any questions he is more than willing to answer and help. I would recommend a class by this teacher anytime.
I took 101-104 with Professor Flynn. He is an amazing teacher. He is very knowledgeable and interested in the subject. His lectures are informative, funny, and incredibly amazing to listen too. I took his 101 class right after I changed my major to undecided and because of his class I fell in love with the subject. If you got to lecture and read th
I'm a history major with a 4.0 GPA and even I couldn't get into this class! It was supposed to be a history class but felt like a religion class. Everything was about religion and one of the books was called When Jesus Became God and another was about how Byzantines influenced the Muslim world. The online discussions were annoying and uninteresting
Prof. Flynn is a lot of fun to listen to. His opinions about religion, especially Christianity can come out every once in a while and it was a little offensive at times but despite that he is a very good teacher, very knowledgeable and easy to understand/learn from. I'm taking 103 with him this semester.
Very interesting online class, a lot of reading and participating in online discussions is required to get an A. Final paper assignment is old school, and the mid/final test was pretty hard. Be prepared to put in the work if you want an A, but a very interesting class.
I took the online class. This is not an easy class, but it's not incredibly difficult if you are willing to do the work. Tests are very in depth, but if you read the text and online lessons it's not too difficult to get a good grade. This class required a lot of reading and online participation, but it is interesting.
Loved this class. Loved the teacher. He made it fun.
Highly informative and knowledgeable. A lot of reading, but nothing a college student shouldn't be able to handle. Tests are relatively simple as long as you read and studied the material; multiple choice & some of the answers to choose from are obviously not the answer, but meant to make you smile. He has inspired me to take more history classes.
Difficult class by community college standards. The reading seemed excessive, but I'm not a history major. No weekly quizzes, so there's a definite temptation to get lax on the weekly reading assignments. Great discussion structure. His strongest point: he knows his stuff well and is extremely clear on what he requires of you.
Does an good job, interesting material. Excellent structure for an on-line class (the best I've seen). My only complaint is the lack of engagement in discussions.
Professor Flynn's online class was clearly structured, the exams weren't easy but fair, no trick questions and if you read the material you shouldn't have any problems. The discussions were fun and we had to write an essay about a book on the crusades. This was a really informative class. Learned a lot!
This class has a lot of reading with very little interaction with the class and professor. The lectures on PDF's and approximately 25 pages long. There is a lot of information to grasp with no interaction from the professor. I love history and I will never again take a online history class.
Flynn is a fantastic teacher. The way he lectures is very thorough, so you don't need to read the book or the online supplement reading. Tests are multiple choice and essay. Flynn does give extra credit for turning in assignments early. The assignments are not too time consuming. Flynn makes jokes in class and movie references. He's great!
Lectures are basic, but to the point and easy to follow along. Obviously enjoys teaching the subject and knows his stuff. Cracks a joke every now and then. Very friendly, though also pretty professional. Assigns readings though you could probably get away with just skimming through them as he covers the same material in class. Good teacher!
This teacher may be good in person, however he is terrible at communicating online. He does not communicate well. You have to go above and beyond what the instructions say before he will even pass you on an assignment. He assigns SO much reading (5 or 6 pdf files 25 pages each) I would NOT recommend this teacher at least for an online class.
If you are able to take good notes you don't really need the textbook. His lectures are thorough even though he can get off topic with movies easily. If you have trouble taking notes I suggest some sort of recorder!
I took this online. It was one of the most reading intensive classes I've ever taken. The book is 575 pgs and there are 16 online lectures at 25 pgs each. No study material or quizzes, just a midterm and final. HINT: The tests are all based off of material in the lectures, so reading the book wasn't even required.
I don't often think teachers are hard, and he was hard! You absolutely have to do the readings, and study for the tests! he is not clear and then wont reason with you if you try to explain why you did what you did. I loved the middle east studies before this class. almost ruined it for me. Not an easy A or even B.You do learn a lot of random facts
i regret taking this class. the assignments are lengthy. he assigned one hour for 50 question midterm. really?! his harsh grading rubric is ridiculous. you get marked off if you dont post on different days but doesnt take into account that people take online classes for reasons like they have other things to do! and cant post on 4 different days!!!
Prof. Flynn is actually a nice guy. However, grading is pretty tough (discussions gradings are either 59%, 85%, 91%, or 100%). You either pass with a B or Fail the assignment. Mid-term / final were pretty easy if you read the book and lectures. Lectures are 35-40 pages a week! That and the chapters makes for well over 100 pages each week, too much.
Worst teacher ever. He has minimal contact in discussions. He's infatuated with the books he assigns for projects and doesn't give any way of making up quizzes or exams. Exams are just a nightmare, no structure. He seems to be really egoistic in his teaching style. I don't know if this mans' a diffrent person IRL, but online he just sucks.
There's a lot of info and plenty of work. I studied hard and put forth good effort but felt that I could have done better. I was pleasantly surprised with an A grade - likely a curve, but I came out very knowledgeable and appreciative of the content. Dr Flynn is well qualified, enthusiastic, and humorous.
If you do poorly in his class you have no one to blame but yourself. Most relaxed late policy you'll ever find. 1 point off per late assignment. Turned everything in the final day and got an A. Yes, there's a good amount of reading. Let me stress this: THIS IS A HISTORY COURSE, YOU'RE GOING TO NEED TO READ! You're provided with great outlines.
Easy class, as long as you read the material he assigns you will get an A. I took the class online and there was two tests and maybe four discussions, he even drops the lowest discussion grade. It is a very hands off class though so if you can't learn material on your own then it might be a little difficult.
Robert Flynn is a great professor. He gives good, but critical, feedback in a very short amount of time. This is important so that I could adjust my next assignment to avoid the same mistakes. All the material was provided in the Online class and was actually quite interesting. Great class overall.
It's a history class, there is a lot of reading. But if you are willing to do the work, you'll pass this class. You can turn everything in late, as in up until the last day of class with only a one-point penalty. There are weekly untimed quizzes and the answers almost always come from his lectures. Take his class. It's good to learn ME history.
Professor Flynn provides an amazing Middle East History Course. For those serious about studying this region, this course is a must.
The class is immensely boring, half the people are asleep. His class is super easy, 2 exams that consist of 10 MC and 10 T/F, and you have to answer one long essay question. There are 6 possible essay questions that are on the study guide and so of them will be used for the exam and you must answer on
I would definitely recommend. There is a good amount of reading but that is the bulk of the workload. He grades quickly, is flexible, and I found him to be knowledgeable both in history and more current related events (class is "history of the middle east").
This class was insanely easy other than the essay he dropped on us at the beginning of the third week. He hadn't indicated the previous two weeks that we should start reading the two hundred page book the essay was on. And then all of a sudden this thing is due within a few days of posting it. The other assignments were great and really intriguing!
Dr. Flynn is a great professor who gives very good feedback after every writing assignment. No midterm or final. Just easy weekly quizzes and a couple writing assignments/discussion. There is also 10 extra credit points. If you do the work, getting an A is easy.
Professor Flynn responded to emails promptly and was for the most part easy to deal with. I was frustrated with some of the online questions during quizzes that didn't seem to have been proofread, but the ability to drop your three lowest quiz scores ensured that I got an A. He grades easily on the papers and discussions. Be ready to read a lot tho
Flynn was fair/approachable. The class was fairly simplemostly reading and weekly quizzes. Theres a book youll need to read and a short essay youll need to write analyzing the bookthis is easily the most difficult assignment. Very simple class outline, you can even turn assignments in up to the end of the class with only a one point penalty.
Professor Flynn is awesome. The class layout is very straight forward and easy to follow: weekly reading material and a short quiz with occasional extra assignments. You do have to read quite a bit, but if you do your readings there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. He offers helpful feedback and extra credit. Would definitely take again.
Flynn is the best. There is always a ton of reading for History classes as a Historians main source is books. Flynn is clear about his expectations on assignments and a fair grader. The class is easy so long as you read his lecture notes and pay attention. He keeps the subject matter interesting but if you dont like history you may get bored.
Very good teacher! He is mostly lecture, which all tests are on; but he gives you open notes on the TWO tests we had. Would recommend taking more detailed notes than his brief powerpoints, but class was good overall. Assignments aren't too difficult and he is very understanding and wants to help you get the best grade(that you deserve)!
Professor Flynn is the sweetest! I took HST 101 online, and it was the easiest class ever! He was far more understanding then most online professors & understood you actually had a life beyond school. Make sure to do the weekly quizzes before they're due, because they can't be made up. There are a few discussion posts along w/ quizzes & an essay.
Best teacher Ive had in college! His lesson plans are straight forward and easy to remember. No finals or exams, just an easy weekly quiz (mc & t/f).He always lets students drop their lowest three quizzes. Only 2 or 3 assignments and 1 paper. Youll always learn a lot in his class without the ridiculous studying or busy work. Very nice and genuine
Robert was understanding, thorough, charismatic and someone who I wish taught every subject. I loved coming to class and listening to his lectures.
Online textbook, non-mandatory attendance, no extra credit, all the assignments are very straightforward and clear grading criteria. There one essay assignment that is kinda confused so be sure to email the instructor if have questions. The amount of reading is HUGE but it pact with lots of information. He is very quick on grading and good feedback
Professor Flynn was a wonderful teacher and I will likely take another class of his. He uses the notes as his lectures but adds extra stories that make learning the subject fun. He is fair in his grading as long as you put in the effort to do and has an extremely generous late policy. Would recommend if you enjoy history and want a light class.
I like his class and I am learning a lot but the book we are reading is a (very) rough draft written by him and has many spelling errors. You have to read roughly 50-100 pages a week with a 10 question quiz at the end. Hardly any essays or discussion posts which is nice, but the volume of reading every week is exhausting for a 100 level class.
Take this teacher! I've had my share of teachers, but Mr. Flynn is God-sent! Trust me, you want to take any class Mr. Flynn teaches. He made the class so simple, yet I learned so much. He will work with you, I promise! Bar none, the BEST TEACHER I'VE HAD AT PCC!
I loved this class! There is A LOT of reading, so be prepared. I mean 120 pages minimum per week. You read several chapters of the textbook he wrote each week. Tests and quizzes were not hard but would ask you about random really detailed things. Overall this was a great course.
This course was completely online. But at first I was worried about my grade due to weekly quizzes that aren't easy and there is a lot of required readings. But there are assignments that aren't much work. But, overall I recommend this course especially if you need a history credit. He replies to emails quickly and will help with any questions.
Loved Prof. Flynn. Weekly quiz, lowest 3 grades are dropped, two discussion posts, one easy bibliography, and one essay. I wish I knew that I had to get that book or it would be a pain to write. Took me a bit to finish the essay but did ok despite being unprepared. Great class, really interesting, he was very quick to respond and helpful. Recommend
We had a weekly quizzes, 2 (large) discussion posts, one bibliography assignment, and one essay at the end of the course. There is a LOT of reading for this course, but it is pretty interesting information. I would say that Professor Flynn is a tough grader, but he kept students accountable. All of his instructions were clear and concise.
Really really knows his stuff. If you like history, take this guy.
This class is great! His expectations are clear, his assignments are consistent (every week includes a quiz, maybe a discussion post, and 1-2 essays total), and he is VERY lenient with late work. Lots of reading, mostly from a textbook and written lectures. Definitely recommend if you are looking for an easy and interesting history class.
Amazing teacher. Gives you a lot of time to submit work in. Attendance is not required. Weekly quizzes are not difficult. Stay on top of work and it is an easy A.
I never liked history until I took a couple classes from Mr. Flynn. His lectures are detailed, interesting, and make you want to know more. His quizzes are fair. And the written assignments are fun. He doesn't give away good grades. You have to earn it. But he makes acheiving a good grade so rewarding and satisfying. Highly recommend.
Intriguing lectures and fascinating topics. Quizzes were simple if you paid attention, and you could go back to look for answers. A couple of papers, but they were not too difficult. No early work, but I could easily do a week's worth in one day. He responded quickly to emails and was very helpful, I would definitely take one of his classes again.
Prof. Flynn is accessible and gives detailed feedback. Beware -- this class requires on average 100 pages of dense textbook reading per week, plus a short quiz. Essay and discussion assignments weren't too tough, and there were extra credit opportunities.
I really enjoyed Dr. Flynn's lectures, he knows how to be engaging and humorous, and he is very understanding about the fact that people have other classes and a life outside of school, meaning he has a VERY lenient late policy
Prof. Flynn was superb! He really sets you up for success, everything is clear, access to grading rubric, amazing late work policy. Great feedback that made me want to do better without being discouraging. No trouble getting disability accommodations. A couple papers, a couple discussion posts, and a lot of fun! Textbook is free, and easy to read.
Honestly, I liked him as a professor even though I did not communicate with him much. I think the work is not too much but also not just a small amount of homework. I did not enjoy all the reading, it is several hundred pages a week, not kidding. It's similar to Chris Brook's history class, which I liked better. It literally uses his textbook.
Took two history courses from Dr. Flynn, and enjoyed them both! Easy assignments, and I appreciated how he makes his students look at sources and determine historical events for ourselves or read sources and argue our own opinion. A lot of reading! But the textbooks are free and written by him. Very knowledgeable, kind, and impressive professor.
THE GOAT!!! Prof.Flynn knows history extremely well and knows how to teach it in a fun way. Each assignment felt like a reward rather than work needed to be done. Quizzes were funny, lectures and textbooks were engaging, inspirational, easy and fun. Clear grading criteria on every major assignment. This class was a blessing. Highly recommend.
