ROCKS SO HARD! Best history teacher EVER! Encyclopedic knowledge and a never misses an opportunity to insert a wry and subtle anti-University of Chicago aside into a lecture. SO GREAT!
Very good teacher. He knows what he is talking about. Doesn't give homework besides reading and the grade is based on essay exams, which if you study you can do good on!
this guys essay exames are hard as hell, u must study and do all the readings to pass
His exams were near impossible. Yes, he is extremely knowledgeable with the material. But when so much of the grade is based on a couple HARD tests, your chances of a good grade are slim.

This guy is an extremely hard grader and doesnt tell you what he's looking for when it comes to essays, not very helpful when you ask for assistance either.
Smart smart guy, but grades A papers down to D's. Grade consists of 3 tests, each one question each. Good, lively teacher, but entirely too hard. Needs to teach Ivy league...
Essay exams, no homework, hard grader
Totally sucks.. I was sick once and even got a doc's note, but still would not let me make up anything...very hard grader...so boring...spare yourself the trouble
essay exams, once you take the first one you can pretty much guess the questions on the next. i wouldn't say a hard grader, but pays attention to details, you have to know your stuff. to do well: go to class, take notes, and reread them. thats what i did
HE ROCKS! So knowledgable, funny, and helpful. AND when you get 100% on a paper you get a Garfield sticker. He really seems to enjoy teaching, that makes the class that much better, knowing he wants to be there too. Likes to discuss so come ready to talk.
His exams are extremely hard to study for. When given 30 pages of notes to study from and only given 2 questions on the exam...forget it. Instead of bringing razor blades to class to slit your wrists, spare yourself and don't take him!!
he is the worst teacher i have ever had
His lectures were interesting and clear. His grading is what makes the class hard. You grade consists of 3 tests, and he grades hard. The tests were based on essays and some matching.
Knows his stuff for discussions, but at times can be really confusing. Mostly written work, so get ready to essay-fy yourself. If you don't see eye to eye with him, you'll have a hard time passing his class. Best to stay on his good side.
The worst teacher ever. Gives D's on good papers. Average in the class is about 50 %. way to hard but very clear.
LOL, hilarious reviews. Got an A in the class. 6 pages of notes each class, memorize ur notes word for word and ur money. Grading is sorta b.s. He needs to lighten up with grading a litte. But great lecturer and pretty funny. 3 essay exams 1 question each
very interesting teacher. he lectures all period and expect to take a good amount of notes, but if you're interested in the subject matter you will enjoy all of the tangents he goes on. great with answering any questions you have.
Extremely knowlegable and interesting lectures. If you come to class, take good notes, and know some basic geography you've got yourself an A!
agree with others - lots of notes, but if you know them, youre fine. easy map tests, predictable essay questions, not hard about attendance, grading is ok.
Lots of notes, moderately difficult tests. Teaches class in a humorously dramatic way. Fun, and very educational class
He is not easy but if you pay attention you will do fine. He knows everything. Smart man. Take him and learn something in this college for once.
Great lectures and extremely knowledgeable-not only on class topics but others just as well. He's not fussy about attendence but your test score will show what you deserve since all exams are 100% based on lectures and readings.
This guy is awesome. His lectures are fantastic and he knows A LOT. No class discussions, papers, or attendance req. BUT - exams are strictly essays & maps. Essays are fine if you've taken notes & know details. Test maps dont match maps in lectures.
Very good class if you want to learn. Very clear and understandable. Much notes but VERY INTERESTING IF YOU LIKE WARS AND HISTORY.
Sycophants and idiots will thoroughly enjoy this man's class. His lectures will challlenge you if you went to a factory for high school. Lectures give no leeway for studednt interaction. Angry, bitter man who hates his life and will take out his anger onn zealous, interested students.
Just to set the record straight. I had this professor last year and then applied to Northwestern where I was accepted. This professor is excellent, and far superior to my current NU history professor. Anyone who dislikes this class simply is not willing to work hard, and throws blame to the prof.
Very interesting class, the lectures are very clear and understandable. I wasn't bored even for a minute.
He's not as hard a grader as you think. The tests are not that bad, but the lectures are horrible. You don't really have to do the reading, just come to class and you'll be fine.
Very good professor as far as teaching the material, but a hard grader. 40% mid 60% final. DO NOT miss a class!! he will not go over the material again and all the material is not in the books or handout. but overall, he knows his stuff. but just like any class, study!
he has an agenda and proves it! Miserable class.
Great professors. His history class was nothing like a stereotypical history class. Talks in a way that keeps your attention. No papers, which is a major plus in a history class. One caveat: his exams are the only part of your grade. However, you pick only one question you know best out of 6.
tests only, which is good except, for some reason you have to identify things on maps you NEVER WENT OVER. so there's a good chunk of the test wrong. but he is knowledgeable and the class uses his own book.
Not a hard class, but watch out it is true that you must stay on his good side. Does not welcome any opinions that differ from his own and voicing them will lower grade. Basically, a decent old guy who who is just one of the most close-minded people at depaul.
Dr. Garfield is a great professor who made history interesting. He is the author of the book, so he is the ultimate authority. The only grading is of tests, so go to class, take notes, and you had better love lectures as there is little student interaction aside from note taking. Great class overall
This guy teaches as if you are a history major. Tests are random pieces of information that you will screw up. HARD HARD HARD class for it being an intro to 100 level course. Please do not take him. He is very condescending and doesn't really care about your grade. CONCEITED. Not worth it.
monotonous lectures but nonetheless interesting. able and willing to answer just about any question in the entire world you may have. 2 30% tests and 1 40% final test, this leaves little room for error. i got a c+ after trying with all my might in the class but i do not regret a bit of it
Definitely not the easiest history class, but very passable. He knows his stuff extremely well. Class was all lecture - but his delievery and tone of voice made sure that class wasn't too boring. I did learn a lot about history during the class - I would recommend him if you like history.
He is amazing!!! I really wish I could take this class again! I didn't do well in the class due to a bad midterm grade (one of two grades in the class) I learned so much and didn't want to miss a day (which I don't recommend doing anyways) Please take him, he is an excellent teacher!!!
Garfield is a walk in the park. To ace his class you need to take really good notes or record him and repeat verbatim what he lectures on in the test. You have to be moron to not figure this out!
I love this guy! He actually inspired me to switch majors to History after taking his class. He is challenging, but if you are into it then he is the best. Lean your maps!! Learn your maps!! Learn Your Maps!! Nuff Said! :)
Lectures, but makes it interesting. Has been known to yell in German. Is from the Bronx and makes fun of how old he is. Willing to answer questions anytime during lecture. Only grades are three tests, which is a map section and an essay question.
I personally didn't like this professor, although a lot of the other people in our class did like him. He was very unclear about what he wanted from assignments, and class discussions were boring and condescending.
He is one of the most amazing profs at DePaul! Although his class is mainly lecture, he keeps it highly entertaining and extremely interesting! Just take good notes and know your maps!!!
Garfield is a practically a walking history encyclopaedia. If you can stomach long lectures and take copious notes that you can memorize, go for it. Otherwise be prepared for a formidable challenge.
The guy is entertaining, knows what he's talking about. You just have to do the basics like pay attention come to class take notes and study. He tells you what he expects and clearly he's not a hard teacher but he's not something you blow off. highly recommend him. Would take the class again he has so much information.TEST: Essay (very ez)mem. map!
Loved the class! It’s all lecture but very interesting. Lecture style is very clear and dramatic in style. One of the best professors that I have had. Most take lots of notes and study them. Don’t under estimate the map tests. I would definitely take him again. Got a B out of the class.
he only lectures, which isn't that bad but can get a little boring. it was really interesting information and the only grades are the midterm and final. not that bad as long as you go to class and take notes
Great teacher-knows a ton about history, but still willing to listen and discuss alternative theories. Class is all lectures but very easy to understand the key concepts. Take this class!
So, this class is no walk in the park. You actually have to work hard to get a good grade...surprise surprise..its college ppl..gotta work hard. Yes he is a hard grader..but in all honesty...I've learned a lot about this course. He is an awesome teacher.
Great guy. His old man grumpiness is charming and funny if you have the right sense of humor. Very knowledgable, HIGHLY recommended.
oh god was this guy great. his class was never boring. he assigned no homework, just 4-5 pages reading before the lectures if you felt like it. this is how you get an a: come to every class, take notes, and 1-2 days before the final, read over everything which was placed on the syllabus (60-70 pages of easy stuff). i did this and broke both curves.
Garfield is absolutely the greatest professor at DePaul. It's hard to believe the amount of information he knows. Class time is never wasted- lectures are always interesting and informative. Take LOTS of notes to prepare for essay on Midterm and Final (you get to chose 1 question from about 4-5 so study 1-2 topics intensively). And study your maps!
All these people are crackheads!! He is the worst teacher at DePaul. Never missed a day of class and went to talk him twice. The man is an ASS!!!Sure you think only having a midterm and a final is great, but you would be WRONG!! Only way to pass the class is to know your notes word for word along with the textbook. RUN FOR THE HILLS, he's terrible!
Very interesting lectures. It's like listening to the History Channel. He is funny, and knows his stuff 100%. 4 tests with fill in the blank map and an essay section with choices on which one you want to write! Easy as long as you do not fall behind. I loved this class. The books ARE OPTIONAL, we are supposed to read then but no homework from them
I took European Expansion and the class was pretty interesting. I never read the book - do not buy it!! When I actually did look over it for the final, it was obvious he lectures straight from it- so don't waste your money! As far as him, he is very thorough, what he says in class is exactly on the tests.
Class isn't really mandatory, but it might as well be if you want a chance to pass. Lectures are good: loud and clear, and makes random obscure jokes; knows his stuff. Two exam, final, and a paper. Exams are matching for maps part (definitely take notes on the maps, they're not easy!) and essay from several choices. Hard class, but you'll learn.
(continued)He is talking WHILE writing things on this random map, so in the meantime you are trying to look for the map to write on, listen to him so you can take notes, take the notes, and then finally once you find the map he is using you have to copy EXACTLY where he draws on it...EXACTLY!!! These people who are saying he's easy are retarded!!
Seriously do not take this class. YOU WILL REGRET IT. He appears kind of funny and interesting at first but is delusional about grading.
What a pathetic and boring class. He knows it too and that's why the attendance is mandatory. Will dock you points if you're not there or don't participate in his utterly pointless discussions. Have to write 3-5pg papers every week and pretend to laugh at his stupid jokes in class. Relatively think free environment.
Extremely boring; straight lecture, hard to stay awake. Exams include map tests and essays. There are 3 exams. I got the exact same grade on the essays every time, interpret that how you wish. There is also a term paper which he grades hard. The class itself is easy but his grading is hard. Avoid him if possible, but there is worse out there.
I learned a lot from the class and his lectures were fascinating. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want a chance in hell of getting a good grade you have to go to EVERY class. The map section of the exam is difficult, but impossible if you haven't been to lectures or have a friend who took notes. Also, seems nice in class, not so outside
I regret ever signing up for this class. Ugh.
Bottom line: if you take good notes in class, you will do very well. His lectures are actually pretty entertaining, and they will provide everything you need to know for the tests. Each essay question option perfectly reflects one day's notes, so as long as you attend one class each test session(and get the map notes) you'll be more than alright.
Ok, he's not a bad guy but ISP 101 has too many essays. The discussions are boring and raising our hands make it even more boring. If you want to watch old moives(bad and good) and write a paper and have a hard grader. This is your class!
One of the best history teachers at DePaul because he gives the damn facts. He doesn't push a political agenda like others in the Dept. and he is entertaining with his cheesy jokes. Great professor if you want to LEARN history through lecture. I learned the most I've ever learned in one of these classes than I did in 5 in other HST courses.
Took the course over the summer, should have dropped it as soon as I found out ur graded on 2 exams,50% each and thats it. Cant use notes, which is asking a lot. His grading system is the most cracked out I have ever seen. Wont explain it which is curious. Finished grading 25 essay finals in 2 days, hmmm...I wont be taking him again, pretty horrible.
HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! bottom line. yea his tests are a little hard, but they are reasonable. he explains history like no other. very clear and detailed. doesnt waste time. exams include 5 or 6 different topics to choos from. extrmemely helpful. before this calss i hated history, and now i love it. he makes it come alive. take his class
Great teacher/entertainer. Very emphatic. Tests aren't a cake walk, but if you read and take class notes you can manage a B or higher.
Going into this class, I wasn't very interested in history but Professor Garfield gets everybody interested! He was a really great teacher who is extremely intelligent so he can answer any question. He's also very funny and basically turns historical events into an exciting story. Only homework is reading - very straightforward. Highly recommended!
Garfield was the best professor that I have had so far. There is no attendance policy, yet I attended every class because his lectures were great. He was fun and offered the straight facts with insight into history. A great professor and a great class.
While he is kind of a crabby old man and unapproachable, he knows his stuff. He actually made African history interesting. Your grade is based on 3 exams and a research paper. The tests are challenging, know your maps!
Although everyone seems to whine about how hard his class is, it isn't if you dig history from the outset and thus actually listen to the lectures. He is loud and clear, repeats important concepts over several times. No need to read every class, but book concepts a nice touch on essays. As they said, study the maps and major topics for the essays!
This class is not an easy class, however if you're prepared to actually do college level work it is a really interesting class. Lectures are really interesting and clear. He doesn't waste time and he is really helpful if you need it.
if you're really interested in history you might do well in this class. it's straight lecture, and grade is based on 3 HARD exams and a paper. write down everything he says, especially the maps. definitely not a blow off class.
really funny old man, tough grader on papers, but the class mccarthy and the movies was fun. just watched movies and wrote short papers.
A God in the flesh.
He is very knowlegable! I am definitely not a history buff and found that some of the information went over my head.. I think that he feels that most students have some prior knowledge of the subject which isnt always true. Your grade consists of 3 tests, a final, and a paper. He is a hard grader. Know your material really well or you wont do well
doesnt give notes. Tests are on maps and essay. Kind of hard because theres no study guide. textbook is really helpful. no homework besides the reading
Awsome professor. If you take good notes, you don't even need to read the book. Three tests that consist of maps and an essay - one essay for each topic covered, therefore it's enough to know one topic inside-out and you will get an A.
Took this class as a requirement. Very shocked, he is fair, and does teach on university level, but exams are very difficult. I went in expecting an easy history class, but i was wrong, it needs a lot of time outside of class and will fail if you don"t read the book
He is really smart and the class is interesting. Attendence is not mandatory, but I suggest you go to learn the maps. 3 Tests on reading, notes, and maps so know your reading, even if he does not go over it in class.
Professor Garfield is straight up with his students from day 1. His class consists of three tests. This is not a class for slack asses who don't want to attend, but if you do go you will learn something.Lectures are done in a clear concise and outlined manner so there is a good amount of notetaking.Test questions are literally things he has outli
*** AVOID *** - This prof must rate himself - Taught at a 300 level. over 100 locations to memorize on a map per test. 6 pg essays on each test. He will give you the WRONG info when u see him in is office. I am a 4.0 student and know how to work for my grade... this guy is way off track with his teaching... Feels like I am taking a HST+Geo course.
Prof. Garfield makes you feel as though you know what you are doing until the grades come in. I've never seen so many students cry before a test. You will study for days and still only get an A. He will tell you a city becomes a state, but tell you how to remember it for the test. Essays need to be VERY detailed! He giggled when students did poor!
I personally loved him. He was interesting explaining about the Russians and Stalin's paranoia. Make sure you know the maps and facts from the lecture and textbook and you'll so fine. This class was pretty fun.
Don't you dare! The overall rating of this teacher is not accurate. The guy talks about how his students at Northwestern didn't even get it...as he teaches the same lecture at DePaul and expecting the same. I went to every class, read, and went in for help and i got an F!
Had to write a paper for every class. Strict attendance policy. Essays must be very detailed. Laughs when students do poorly. But if you just do the requirements it is easy to get at least a B
He is an excellent lecturer, more of a storyteller really. I loved the material. 3 exams, all graded hard (matching maps section and pick one essay question) and one biography paper which he does not give a lot of info on. Do NOT have to read, covers a lot of info each lecture. TAKE NOTES and be detailed on exam essays
Garfield made history interesting for me! If lecture classes are your style you will learn a lot! His exams are different from other professors' because they follow his narrative rather than fact-based style, which might be why people have trouble, but I found his clear expectations for homework and exams to be easy to meet.
Garfield is a great history teacher! His lectures are fast and in depth, so make sure to take lots of notes and never skip class! Also, the textbooks are important, but not hard to read at all. Three exams, and one paper 6-10 pages.
Mr. Garfield is literally one of the best instructors I have ever learned from! I don't know where some of these people are getting the idea that he's unsympathetic to students and strict. He is a very nice man and makes his lectures entertaining and extremely informative. Take notes and be specific and you'll do fine! Try to take a class with him!
This class is really interesting and I learned a lot. However, Garfield is a HARD grader. His tests are very hard and he wants a lot of detail in the essay portion. For that reason, reading is mandatory, and there's a lot of it. If you're looking for an easy A, do not take him. But if you're looking to learn a lot and be challenged, this is perfect
Professor Garfield is a nice person, but not the best professor. I was already getting a D in the class week 3 and I am a straight A student. Too much work is required for a 100 level history class. He grades way to hard and expects way too much. Try to avoid.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! He is such a harsh grader, and makes every student in class feel like they are stupid. Definitely do not recommend this professor. You have to study all the time and he makes you write in pen on tests or else he will not even read the essay! Do not take this professor.
Run for the hills! The whole grade is based off of 2 essay tests that are graded impossibly hard. Class is straight lecture with no PowerPoints or videos, only the occasional map on the overhead. No structure to the class, just him lecturing. Made no effort to engage students. Bad class if you're a visual learner. Only plus is that prof is helpful.
Attendance isn't required but is definitely necessary if you want to pass. He wrote his own book so it's cheap and clear what he wants you to know if you bother to read it and it drills home what he's probably looking for in the test. Pretty dry until you ask questions and show interest. Really study 2 chapters and their notes and you're good.
It was like I was living in a nightmare. He couldn't have been any clearer with the information, but everyone still did horrible. The average grade on the tests was an F and he was somehow proud of that. There are 2 tests, a final, and an essay. After the 2 tests I had a 20% in the class, didn't even bother with the essay or final. ***AVOID THIS***
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! He uses an overhead projector to teach. He does not give a study guide, and when you ask him about what might be on the test he will give you a very vague answer which does not answer your questions. If you are looking for something to fulfill you history domain STEER CLEAR he will trash your GPA. There is something better.
Do not take this class. His lectures are very long and boring, there is no structure to the class, and his class is based off of two 100 point essays. He uses an overhead projector from probably the 90's and uses no visuals or powerpoints. This class was very difficult and a heavy course load. Not worth it.
he expects you to know things as if you were there. dont bother taking this class almost impossible to pass.
Tough class but it is set up simple. Just go there and take notes and make sure you write down all of the stuff he says to on your maps. 1 term paper. He is very old school but if you see him in his office hours he will help you out.
I'm a business major and took this class 1. to get the domain. 2. Thought it was going to interesting. What I got was the biggest head ache in my college career. You will have to memorize tons of locations for his test, which he does not label clearly. He has total rule of your grade. If you are looking for an easy class THIS IS NOT IT!!!
DO NOT TAKE! he is terrible because he isn't helpful at office hours and expects you to know EVERYTHING! His map tests are difficult to read and do, and his essays are only allowed in pen. Super hard grader. He makes you feel inferior and he thinks this class is your life. Not easy. take any other class but his. He expects way to much and is harsh.
Professor Garfield is an amazing professor at the beginning I was scared because his class seems to be difficult but it is honestly not. If you read and attend class you can pass with an A he only has 3 test and one paper. You have to memorize map locations and his test are written response. Old school but you will learn a lot! And he's helpful
If you don't have carpal tunnel, you will after this class. If you're passionate about history like me, then you will love this professor. He is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about what he teaches and can be a little intimidating at time. I have never taken so many notes for a class, but the pay off was well worth it since I learned so much.
The absolute worst. I love history and this class was awful. His lectures were boring and done on an old school overhead projector that was impossible to read. His tests were insanely difficult. Trashed my GPA.
