He tries his best to make everyone understand but he is really boring and very unclear in lecture, I almost fall asleep everytime I go to class even though I love Chemistry. His tests are impossible!! Tricky questions and only a few problems!!
he has doctorate but i guess he's his own doctor. he can't transfer his knowledge, if u ask a Q , he goes mad vuz he can't find a clear answer ffor u.... he's so disorganized, just read the book... skip his lectures, don't rely on him.
it is the truth, this guy is very hard!!! He's not a mean guy, he just can't TEACH!!! even if you read the book, his tests are hard too!! good luck if you have to take this guy!!
The most horrible instructor ever!!! You'll not learn anything out of his lectures. The exams are not relevent with what he teaches!! If you can handle the course and tutor urself, you are welcomed to his class. Do not ruin ur GPA.
Not a good instructor at all, u'd better avoid him.
He can't teach. His tests aren't difficult but are very unclear, he asks one thing and expects you to answer something else. but it's not like your other options are better than him. If you can learn from the book then take him.
I didn't understand anything from his lectures. I read the book and understood most of the problems, but the test prblms are nothing like the book prblms. I got a "C" then I HAD to take him for 102 & again I got a "C". The average test score in the class was 60%.IF you can teach yrslf then take him. He KNOWS chem very well, he just CANT teach.
it is a difficult class, however if u put the time into it you will get a good grade. He tries to be helpful during his office hour. his lectures are helpful towards the exams
THE BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER TAKEN FOR CHEMISTRY! I don't know what everyone else is talking about. If you study hard and pay attention to his lectures, you'll do just fine. You can't expect him to study the material for you..of course it requires effort. Great curve! Overall, wonderful professor and I would definitely reccomend him!!
AWSOME AWSOME AWSOME teacher, he looks out for his students and helps in every way possible, and he curves the grade if it favors the students
WOW, i love Ms. Gellert. he is owesome!! the class is not easy but then again its chem 102 , what did you expect? try to keep up with the lectures and you will be just fine. tests arent bad and he curves al lot at the end of the course so dont drop the class after the first test, u'll regret later. Take him, he's a really nice man.
IF YOU WANNA PASS JUST READ THE BOOK . IF YOU JUST FOLLOW HIS NOTES U'LL BE SCREWED UP ON THE TESTS!! HE KNOW WELL CHEM BUT HE CAN'T TEACH IT OR HE CAN'T TRANFER HIS INFROMATION TO YOU AS YOU NEED!!!!
NOT EVEN FUNNY. just register for his class and u ll know what i mean. ask him a question and his answer is " Did u read the book??" he gives no answers whatsoever to any of your questions. all he tells u is read the book. basically just like a self paste class. Good Luck
you would be good to read text carefully and do practice problems that he didn't even assingn. try to understand text. the class'll get into more hard material at the end of semester, so get good grade on the first test. his final is fairly easy compare to other tests. he curves grade too! (A=85) study hard then you will be fine. =)
Your options are Handley, Fridman, Gellert and Nowinski. Nowinski is the coolest teacher, but has the hardest tests. so forget him! The two women, Handley and Fridman are the WORST!![Especially Handley}. The only choice you have is Gellert which is average! SO go for it. I'm sure picking Gellert is the best choice. althought he sucks somehow!
he is the worst instructor that I have ever had. I love chem. I love studying but in this class I was comfused. Maybe he knows chem, but cannot teach. Do not take him .He is not responsible, tests are out of nowhere, never gives normal lectures,or experiments to make the concept clear.I do not recomend him.
He really isn't all that bad. Sure his lectures aren't clear but reading the book helps lots. Tests are hard if you're not studying but if you read the book then I mean you're all good to go! and He'll help if you ask for it.
UNAPPROACHABLE! makes you feel like sh**. He shouldn't even be called a teacher b/c he doesn't teach + you can't ask him a question w/o him making you feel stupid(oh and he doesn't even answer the question). He'll just tell you to read the book. What the h*** is he there for?! Waste of money, time, and GPA. I should've taken all the others' advice.
I took chemistry 102 with Dr. Gellert and i think he was one of the coolest professors. He has a passion 4 chemistry and he cares a lot for students, his exams were hard but if you dont want hard exams then you should forget about transfering to UCLA,USC,CAL,UCSD and UCSB. As a graduate of UCLA i think i wouldn't have made it without his tuffness.
Dr. Gellert is a great teacher. He is very helpful and is very passionate about Chemistry. I had him for two semesters and i learned a lot. whoever gave him a bad rating, obviously did not take advantage of his knowledge and probably just wanted a easy class. I really enjoyed his class and would recommend anyone to take it.
Dr. Gellert is the best!I had him for Chem 101 and 102. He is really into teaching the students chemistry instead of just wasting time. He never gets off topic, is really helpful, very nice and caring. As long as you attend the lectures and read the book, you'll be fine.
:0 :( :)
Mr. Gellert should not be teaching because he lacks a technique to explain the concepts behind chemestry. He is really good at yelling at students and excusing himself for not teaching basic concepts. I think he is an excellent candidate to work for a chemical corporation not a school. Think twice before taking any of his classes.
Unless you have taken the class before, you will be very confused and frustrated. When you try to ask him a question he makes you feel like if you're ignorant. He is unapproachable and won't clarify anything for you.He makes the subject way more confusing than it really is. A total waste of time.Beware-he might be writing his own positive comments.
yes, he loves chemistry, theres no doubt about it. with that being said, theres a difference between liking the subject and being able to teach it.here, the 2nd parts the problem.its tru- he makes you feel stupid for asking anything and as for your gpa, you can kiss it goodbye.he shouldnt be teaching.i recomend taking someone else udnder all circum
OK... so he loves chemistry and he's a genius in it... yet he can't teach... whatsoever... i took him as a last resort.. mind you i got an A, but it took a lot of hard work to get it... be sure you'll be teaching yourself. I believe he does add a pretty big curve at the very end of the class for people who actually stayed in the class to the end
Don't take this teacher! You'll regret it, just look at his overall rating. It's horrible! He'll exploit you. On our 2nd test the average score was 38% from 100%...no one got an A on that test, so he has to curve on his biased opinions.
I couldn't avoid Gellert, took him for 101 & 102. Yes he's hard but trust me...when you transfer it will make your life easier...I am taking 2nd Sem. O-Chem now at a Top Univerity...and it doesn't even compare to the work I put in, in Gellert's class. It's camp snoopy compared to Gellert. Take him and you'll be happy you did once you trasnfer.
I was once foolish like you, reading these comments, realizing he has terrible ratings, and yet I took him anyway because I 'had to'. Man do I regret it, his exams have NOTHING to do with what we covered. His lecture is on apples and his exam is on oranges. To top it all of he is very rude to every student, not just the dumb ones. Trust me RUN!
He is a funny person but boy when it comes to grading Ur points, he?s one damn evil. He take points off 4 any reasons that U can/cant think of. Dont let ppl copy from U Cuz he gives U half point. He said "I dont believe that anyone can get 100 in this class." DONT TAKE his lab if you can avoid it cuz U WILL regret it like me. Its no FUN buddy.
I currently have his class and I honestly don't understand why he has such bad comments. He is the cutest teacher in this world. The labs are a little hard but the tests are very straight forward. Study and you will get an A.
I HAVE HIS CLASS FOR CHEM THIS YEAR AND WHEN I HAD READ HIS COMMENTS, I DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE HIM. DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING THAT THE COMMENTS SAY. HONESTLY, HE GIVES A SAMPLE TEST BEFORE AN EXAM. HE GIVES SOLUTIONS AND CHAPTER REVIEWS. HIS TESTS ARE TRUELY STRAIGHTFORWARD. YOU DESERVE WHAT YOU GET.ADORABLE TEACHER!!! TRUST ME
I would like to know about this instructor because I've decided to take his class on winter it's Chem 101 What do you think??
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR WINTER UNLESS THIS IS YOUR SECOND TIME TAKING THIS CLASS. NOT BECAUSE HE IS A HARD INSTRUCTOR, BUT BECAUSE CHEMISTRY IN GENERAL REQUIRES WAY MORE TIME THAN 5 WEEKS. ABSOLUTELY DON'T TAKE THIS IN THE WINTER IF IT'S YOUR FIRST TIME.
Awesome professor; very kind and passionate about what he does. A difficult class, but if you study hard and attend regularly, you'll do well.
great professor. I got a B but i deserved the grade for exactly how much I put into the class. I spent much of the time teaching myself, but this teacher is very passionate and very nice. Always willing to help; just have to ask.
Great professor and very helpful! Study (and understand...duh) sample tests and you're pretty much set for the exam itself. Final was a bit hard, but multiple choice for us...still had to show ur work. Attendance in lecture not mandatory, but very useful! Great professor!
I took this in the summer, and dropped after the 2nd week. This guy made me hate chemistry so much, that i completely changed my major. Thank Gellert, for helping me realize this is NOT what I want to do!
What can I say about Danny Devito, well, I thought the whole course to myself, after the first week I noticed his lectures were useless, he thinks you already know everything, I spent ONE day before his tests teaching me 2 chapters, got two 100s on his tests, got an A in the class, 85% is an A btw, his tets are hard compared to other chem prof.
Stay away! He is a horrible teacher, that doesn't know what he's doing or talking about. He just rambles on and on. Everyone failed his tests and you dont learn ANYTHING! Waste of my time.
Stay away! He is a horrible teacher, that doesn't know what he's doing or talking about. He just rambles on and on. Everyone failed his tests and you dont learn ANYTHING! Waste of my time.
talks about chemistry just doesn't teach you chemistry. practice tests questions are nowhere near similar to real tests. takes him hours to read out loud the instructions "written" on the lab work making you stay past designated class time and redo them if he doesn't like the results. ~88% of the class dropped during Fall 2009 semester (true).
He is a nice guy, but when it comes to teaching...pretty much what the below comment says...except I am not sure about the drop rates.
Not the best teacher I ever had but certanily not the worst either. If you study you will be fine.
Good teacher!
Your grade depends on you, don't count on him for teaching you anything. No point of going to lectures since all he does is read off a powerpoint which you can download. If you ask him a question you will never get a decent and satisfactory response. To pass the class read the book and practice a lot of problems. He also says "right" a 1000 times.
Completed during the winter. Gellert lectures using power points (available online). His exams are challenging (total 5-drops one grade). He assigns SIs during laboratory; they are difficult, but once the problems (usually 10 per chapter) are solved, one can solve any other problem in the textbook. Very knowledgeable and helpful! I earned an A!
DONT TAKE. Doesnt know how to teach. I liked chem before, now I hate it. It really depends on the teacher because a good teacher can explain things to you. Tests are really hard, his teaching style is no good either. Yes, there are ppt lectures but that doesnt help at all since he never writes anything on the board... just talks. That doesnt help.
Do not take this class. He will UNTEACH you what you know. All lectures were off of power-points, never answers a question with an answer. His exams are not graded with balance. He will spend the class explaining one concept that has less detail and content then a 3 sec Google search.(A students went to d+ c students) Avoid like the plague.
Teaches off of powerpoint. It gets boring. His SI's are pretty hard as well as his tests. You really have to read the book. He is not clear at all. I probably would never take a class with him again. Not my teaching style at all.
Worst professor I have ever had. You are 100% on your own. You need to somehow teach yourself Chem102 and show up to take his tests. I seriously considering crashing another chem lecture just to LEARN. Avg ontests are around55. If you are a student who cares and likes to learn, he will make you cry. Mark my words. Take it next semester w/someone el
absolutely the worst teacher i have ever had. A nice guy, knowledgeable, but amazingly bad as a teacher. i was constantly confused. crashed another lecture to figure out what was going on
I cant believe people write thsese things about Dr. Gellenrt. He knows chemistry and he proviedes us with all materials, SIs, practice exams, and he helps u a lot if you ask for help. He was my teacher in 101, and I was happy to take him for 102. He is knowledgeable, and he helps u in lab and office hours. He gives SIs which hellps a lot!
The man is absolute garbage. If you ask him for help with a problem on any of the SI's or even during lecture about what he just explained, he will tell you either to "just think about it" or that "weve already covered this material." Comparable to a mute; he understands everything, but cannot convey any knowledge. S.S.
I agree with all the bad comments. This man is even worse than garbage.Worst teacher ever, will confuse you and take off lots of points.Never helps when you ask him a question and enjoys failing you. Absolutely USELESS "teacher".Makes you hate the subject...
This is truly a very challenging class. Professor is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Also he takes time to grade tests making sure he is fair. Loved the class though I was the only person
Save yourself and your nerves, don't take him. the exams are nothing like the material covered in the book. extremely hard. my hard work was not reflected in this course.
Highly recommended (specially for Chemistry Majors). You need to know how to solve the SI problems to be prepared for his exams and get a good grade. Make your self a favor and take easy classes along with this one.
If you are a chem, bio-chem, or chem-e, then take his class. He will challenge you, and you will work like a dog. But you will learn the material. If you want an easy A, look somewhere else. His SIs are tough (keep a copy). SIs (and practice tests) will help you with a grade. I'm in UC majoring chem and you will appreciate it later
Dr. Gellert's lecture exams are very challenging, but they help prepare you for the final exam. If you stick with the class until the end and do well on the final he will bump up your grade. He is always willing to help if you ask him.
worst professor ever!doesn't answer any questions, very rude and mean to his students. All students in my class agree that it is more helpful to go home & read the chapter, that to understand his lecture!never uses the book, and gives problems on the test out from nowhere.from 62 students 40 dropped the class. only 3 "B" through all class. Horrible!
His lectures seemed useless. They were too complicated to explain a very simple concept. Might be too smart to be a teacher because he was very condescending and rude to anyone who asked him a question. Our class went from 60 people to 20. He "made" his tests very difficult and would then blame any mistakes found on not making the tests himself.
This prof. is not good at all. He gets upset if you asks questions, exams are hard and are nothing like the practice exams. You learn more by reading the book than from the lectures. I got a B but it wasn't easy.I wouldn't recommend him.
Tough Prof. Not like your average child-like high school junk. He makes you think a lot and his exams are tough so study, study, study! He will help you if you ask and will take your interest into consideration when it comes to your final. If you're not willing to comit just don't bother because YOU will be wasting HIS time. Knows his chem.
please don't take him... he is a worst professor.
Gellert's main problem is that when he teaches a new concept, he starts bringing up way more advanced concepts not in the textbook beyond the scope of the course. He's like a Math professor who introduces Calculus to a class that's just starting to learn Algebra. He doesn't provide a stable foundation for Chem cause he assumes you already have it.
great professor, hard but thoughtful. Take his class only if you are ready to learn
Everyone keeps on complaining about him, but I found him very knowledgeable. He does not work on being popular like the lab professor did, but I think I learned from him. He is not easy, but he gives lots of extra points at the end.
The worst proffessor I had throughout my whole college learning experience. He was not fair, did not know how to explain the concepts, and his test were completely different then what we learned from him and the book. If you ask him a question during class, he will laugh or be like ask after class. STAY AWAY FROM HIS CLASS.
If you want to learn-take this prof. He is hard but he is so helpful,he is always there for you, even if you email him at 3am he'll answer in 15-30min.He explains very thoughtfully and clearly, gives you sample exams. He writes on the board and goes over every problem on the board with you(not just changing PP slides in the back of the class)
He is always available to answer questions online. I found him confusing on some occasions because he tries to explain things in so much depth rather than just being straight forward. Write down EVERYTHING in your lab notebook because tests are very specific. My biggest problem was that he seemed more interested in talking on his phone than class.
Overall, he's a good and nice guy. He cannot teach for the life of him. You will be lost in lecture more times than not. He explains things as if we were all established chemists. This is intro to chem. anyway, he never hands back labs or lab quizzes until like a month or two after if he doesn't lose it. He lost my first lab. He's helpful though.
Simply terrible.
The amount of work you put into this class will not be reflected by your grade or, frankly, by the amount of knowledge you walk away with at the end of the semester. A terribly nerve-wracking class taught by a professor who is a vicious grader and has obviously been teaching on auto-pilot for years.
He explains everything so, keep paying attention whatever he says, and try to write down everything on the board. That would help a lot when you take a lab- exam. His SI is a bit hard but it give you better understanding about the material and help for further advanced class.
He is very knowledgeable. If you are good in chemistry then this class is joyful. Ready to spend lots of time to study. He explained every single lab procedure clearly before each lab, but you have to write prelab and he sings. He gives extra credit for each exam. Lab exams are tough but you can use lap notebook.
I had Dr. Gellert in the summer, and despite the fact that his tests are tough (it's the subject not him,) he tries his best to explain the material clearly. He was so kind, very sweet and always willing to reteach the material in new ways if I approached him with concerns. He just wants to see hard work. Pleasure to have taken his class.
I had Dr. Gellert in the summer, and though his tests are tough (it's the subject not him,) he tries his best to explain the material clearly. Dont take him by any means just avoid his class. He makes a fool of you if you ask a question and never gives a clear and direct answer. He doesn't care if 80% of the class fails a lab quiz with under 40% grade -- He's not clear on what'll be on the lab quizzes either. It's a hard class but he makes it very difficult to get into it. Don't take him.
He is a nice person occasionally but he is very unorganized. For a doctor at a college that is unacceptable. He is just an average teacher, don't expect a doctor in the traditional sense.
This subject is really difficult, so it can lead to students blaming the professor. Practice is the key for 102. Do the problems at the end of the book. Do the SIs. Ask him for help during the labs. His tries his best to explain it to you and he is always willing to help. If you're stuck on something at home, email him. He responds very quickly.
Good professor. Easy for Chen 102, and he explains really well if you pay attention the whole time. I never used the book to study, just payed attention and took good notes. He just is impatient when you ask questions sometimes.
NUMBER 1 TEACHER: TAKE HIM 100 PERCENT: TOOK NOVINSKI GOT f; TOOK GELLERT GOT B. student say he is hard nooooo TESTS IMPOSSIBLE SOLVE . That's a lie. Tests are hard a little. read book you are fine. study hard and take private tutor too. Final gives you bonus. AMAZING; wonderful knowledgeable teacher. TAKE HIM I RECOMMEND: THANK YOU DR: gellert:
He is very strict & a very tough grader. However, he's a really wise man. Knows what he's talking about. You can get an A in the class if you're prepared to put in time and study. His tests are hard but manageable if you know the material. About 80% of the class has dropped so far. Went from 70 people to like 12 but honestly he's a good proffesor.
Beware of Gellert! His CHEM 110 Tests are super hard... He confuses CHEM 110 with the rigor of Chem 101 or 102. He teaches super fast as if we're Ph.D. Students. So don't sneeze or you'll miss an entire chapter. You'll learn more by reading and taking notes on your own. Do yourself a favor and find another professor or get ready to teach yourself.
Worst professor ever!!!!!! I had a 4.0 gpa and it dropped to 3.58... Don't take him. He makes everything so hard and confusing and his lectures are useless.
He cares about his students and he truly wants them to learn something. He does his best to support them. Tests are a little challenging, but if you participate in his lectures, you will be fine. He loves chemistry, making it an interesting subject to learn. so if you hate chemistry and need motivations, just take him. But, you need to study.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had. Makes his lessons way more complicated than they should be and makes you pretty much teach yourself.
Faire grader, always available by email and has office hours. Good course to check your knowledge in Chemistry.
Take his class only if you are ready to spend so many hours for studying! For those who take it during summer/winter, good luck. :(
I took this class over the summer and having him as a professor didn't help. It is really fast pace and he is unmerciful with his exams. He knows what he's talking about but doesn't know how to explain it without confusing you a little. You can't ask a question without him sassing you but is helpful once you get that out of the way.
He makes the easiest concept so hard .. I didnt get anything in the class. He doesnt know how to explain . Never again
Questions on tests take the concepts and make them 60000 times harder. And if u ask him why its like that he just says we went over the basic concpet in class. Most concepts feel very rushed while going over in class and he never attends to detail. So expect to read a lotttttt and do a lot of studying.
Dont, whatever you just dont. trust me, i promise you. id rather take a class on learning how to build a spaceship. please dont go through wat i did. The misery, the pain, the sorrow, the depression. Take anyone else, i promise that person will be better. jackie chan can probably teach this class better
He is a good teacher and knows chemistry. He gets irritated by lazy people, i don't blame him. Very smart, and if you email him a question, answers right away. Looks intimidating, but if you get to know him, he is actually very nice.
Dr. Gellert teaches you chemistry. He is tough, but I don't mind, after all that is why i am here. He is not working to be popular, but he cares about the quality of his teaching.
DR GELLERT IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE I WISH I HAD HIM FOR MY CHEM101. TOOK HIS 102 IT WAS TOUGH BUT DOABLE. HE HELP IS YOU ASK QUESTIONS. WRITES EVERYTHING ON THE BOARD, NOT LAZY LIKE THE OTHER TEACHER. HE GETS MAD EASILY SO DONT UPSET HIM. HE IS A NICE OLD GUY AND KNOWS HIS STUFF.
Best Chem teacher ever. People complain because they don't want to study at all. He helps, he answers all emails within a day, he will help you if you ask for help. Thank you Dr. Gellert for ppreparing me for ochem.
His lecture material was irrelevant to his exams. He was rude at times when students, including myself, asked him questions. I could tell most of the people in the class worked very hard, but to no avail when it was exam time. Honestly one of the worst professors I've ever had.
He is a very good teacher. He is old school, I like the way he teaches the lab. His lectures are very detailed. I wish I had him for 101.
Gellert's class is tough but doable. Some of his exam problems are tricky but he is knowledgable and easily accessible for questions. However, don't expect to do well if you do not study on your own. Many people in my class complained that he is sarcastic and rude but I've had much worse professors and Gellert is actually one of the better ones
Simply put lazy teacher. When students dont do well he blames them for being lazy. Doesnt want to go in detail. So what do u get? A bad grade
Worst professor I've ever had! I have no idea why did I take him, but that was a true nightmare! He expects you to have a master's degree in chemistry, mathematics, and physics. I was always good at chemistry and never had such a difficulty. He makes everything way too complicated. His tests were unbelievably tough! DO NOT EVER TAKE HIM!
ara just study and put in the work and you'll get an A, majority of the bad reviews are from lazy people who expect to be spoon fed like in high school
He knows what he is talking about. Very good in the lab. People leaving bad reviews are just lazy. Ask questions: he will help you.
This is the laziest professor at gcc. He uses powerpoints from years ago which have errors that he refuses to fix. And they are so badly organized that you have no idea what is going on. He goes off on tangents about material that is in higher chem levels. Don't ask for help because he either makes you feel stupid or says it the exact same way.
He expects you to know what your doing before you even take the class. At entry level Chem that shouldn't be his expectation. He is so lazy and hates answering questions. He belittles you if you get a question wrong so no one even tried to ask him anything. We all had to depend on our peers. I learned more from my classmates than him.
Gellert is NOT the worst thing that can happen to you. His lectures can seem really tough if you don't read ahead of time. This class requires a lot of work outside of class, but don't blame that on him. I think he just has a hard time communicating the content in a way that students would understand since he's so knowledgeable about chemistry.
To be honest with you guys, taking Gellert is not the worst thing. If you left 101 with an A, or know your Chemistry well, then getting an A shouldn't be impossible. HOWEVER, you must still study long hours for his tests. As a person, he's closed-minded, condescending, and rude. Also, it's a REALLY bad idea to start talking politics with him.
His grading is terrible, takes of points for smallest things. When you ask him a question, you literally have to beg for the answer or explanation and he doesn't explain it very clearly and makes you feel stupid. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER OPTION.
His class is hard but getting an A is not impossible. If you want to get a good grade, you also have to read the book and watch videos on youtube.
Highly recommend in not taking this professor due to the lack of organization, clarity, and lack of emphasis/effort in teaching. If you want to be more confused in a topic that's already confusing then by all means, go for it. The workload is heavy and unexpected in terms of when it's due. As for his ability to explain, good luck, just read.
I took Chem-110, 101, 102, and 102 lab. Trust me, the majority of bad reviews are from bad and lazy students. Take his any chemistry class and spend about 1 hour in the day you will get a solid A. Especially his lab is very fun: open notebook tests and he helps you in experiments. STRONGLY recommend to students who want learn Chemistry.
This guy couldn't be more rude and disrespectful to students and other faculty members as well. He shoves papers in your face and makes you look stupid for asking a question. I love chemistry and had to teach myself for an entire semester and passed with a B. Tests are written and have nothing to do with the slides he uses from 1879. Worst ever!!
This class was so doable. His lectures might be confusing, but that's only if you don't read ahead. This class requires a lot of studying, and that's why most of these reviews are bad, because people expect an easy A without the effort. I personally loved having him. He prepares you for upper divisions, and he's always helpful with any questions.
I was nervous when I signed up for Gellerts class because people say he's "rude", but he was actually very nice and so helpful especially in lab too. He answers emails very quick, and is always willing to help those who are actually trying to learn. You have to work for this class, but it's very rewarding. He teaches you how to use your brain.
The worst professor that I've ever taken. I can say that I'm a good student, but Gerllert just makes this class so hard that even A students struggle to pass it. Lectures are fast, he doesn't put so much effort in explaining them thoroughly, he expects you to know every thing. And when you ask him he doesn't clarify anything. Just don't take him
Dr. Gellert is a brilliant professor with a doctorates from USC. He truly knows his stuff and if you are serious about Chemistry and science he is your man. He is a little unapproachable, and it seems like hes putting you down, but thats because he has very high expectations from his students. If you work HARD, it WILL PAY off.
Guys, he's really not that bad
He is my least favorite professor out of all the professors I've had so far at GCC. He has made me hate the subject of chemistry and I am just hoping this semester ends fast. He lectures really fast and expects you to know a lot of stuff that wasn't covered in the previous chem course. If you are good at chem take him. Otherwise don't it'll be hard
He gives online quizzes which adds up to one exam grade. He drops the 4 lowest. Gives one extra credit problem on each exam. he has an unapproachable personality so I could not deal with this man. Professors are suppose to welcome you to see them for help. He also gives no homework.
He doesn't care about how much work a student puts in. In our class no one had an A. He doesn't answer questions. He is smart but he doesn't know how to explain.
Guys DO NOT TAKE HIM. CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH.
He's nice but is very strict when grading. Not very good at explaining or answering questions. More than half the class dropped by the end because we were failing his tests. It's not impossible to pass his class, but you have to be really good at studying.
Professor Gellert is a nice guy if he sees you trying... but, passing this class is not easy. I would study for 2 hours a day everyday for his exams and still fail. They are out of this world difficult. His labs are very fun and I can tell he wants us to learn, but he truly does not put in the effort to helping you. Avoid his class at all costs.
I would NOT recommend his class. He's a nice guy but his labs and lecture are all over the place. He does help but his test some how doesn't match with what we are learning. Tough test even harder for him to explain things. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR GET A TUTOR if you want to take this class
Can be a sweet guy, but he is SO hard. These reviews are accurate. His exams are extremely difficult and test questions don't always cover lecture material. Difficult ESPECIALLY if Chem is not your strong suit. Can be extremely demeaning in labs if you're confused and have questions. Take a different instructor if possible. Good luck and Read!
Actually, Dr. Gellert is a good teacher. He is the best in the lab, he puts everything on the board for you unlike many. He also gives a bonus at the end of the course based on your final, if you are trying, so your grade gets a good boost. He prepares you for organic chemistry. All these comments are from lazy people who don't want to study.
Dr. Gellert's class was probably the hardest class I've ever taken. If you want a good grade you're gonna have to study really hard. What sucks is that for some even after studying hard, they were still barely passing the class. I could say he gets you read for organic chemistry, but the class requires a whole lot of work. Lab with him was okay.
He gives effort, that is the reason I give him 3 rating instead of 1 or 2. He puts out study guides, SI questions, Q&A and promotes to ask him questions. However, the difficulty of his exams are something I have never experienced. There are trick questions and completely changes up questions you have practiced on. Very difficult to get a B or C!!
Textbook is no use, it is way too simple compared to his teaching style and exams. Exams are ridiculous. The problems all have a twist on them compared to how we are taught. Completely avoid this professor because of the exams. Huge part of your grade. You mess up on two exams, you're done. Take at your own risk. If you're wise, you know not to
When people complain about Gellert, I ask why didn't you take someone else if you don't want to learn? I took him, struggled, but I was prepared for ochem. I actually liked his class. He was helpful, answered my emails. He answers your questions if you put an effort into asking a real question. My advice: want to be ok in ochem, take Gellert.
Dr. Gellert thank you for being tough. I learned how to think from you. Pls do not be discouraged by poor ratings: I had to work hard for my grade, but I learned so much. I heard about his class in 110 and had no choice but to take him, but never regretted that. So, if you want to learn, take Gellert. Period.
If you are planning to take ochem, he's your guy. Prepares you for ochem. However, If you're here because you only need general chemistry, avoid this professor. Very very difficult. He has very high expectations, extremely difficult exams, and treats his students as if they are all chemistry majors planning to get a doctorates.
This class should not be as hard as it is. He is interested in the subject but he doesn't know how to communicate. Constantly yelling and talking to you like you're stupid. Exams are nothing like reviews. Expects you to know things that aren't taught in the class. Should've dropped when I had the chance. 10/10 would NOT recommend. Worst class ever
Exams are nothing like the study guides AND practice exams he provides. My study group studied off them and we all failed. He makes the class way more difficult than it is. The exams are very unpredictable and difficult; your grade entirely depends on it tho. 10000% do NOT recommend this prof unless you want the worst semester of your life
Gellert shouldn't have become a professor, he has no patiences when explaining a topic and always says "use your brain" when you ask him a question. he is very dedicated to reach a certain section by the end of the lecture and will reach it regardless if the class is with him or not. attending lectures are useless since he covers material very fast
Best professor at gcc! No idea why ppl leave these negative reviews. You wanna get a good grade study for it dont blame it on him. His class is totally doable, labs are fun, he is helpful, and also the final was curved and a lot easier than the other tests so that helps a lot too! Loved the class and would highly recommend to everyone.
Just don't. For your own sake, please don't. I tried extremely hard and have never wanted to AT LEAST just pass a class in my life. I cannot stress this enough!
Even though his grading is curved it is still hard to pass his class. He is very rude and doesnt really want to explain his lectures if you dont understand or follow along. He always says use your brain. His lab quizzes are more like exams and if you score low on them they drop you grade extremely. Practice exams are not that helpful either.
Professor Gellert's existence single-handedly ruined my academic career. I dropped this gandon's class the first time, and had to retake him. His tests are extremely hard, his lectures are completely useless, but you still have to attend to sign your name, and he has the explanation skills of a baboon. Just go to PCC. RIP to everyone who takes him.
Never focus on finishing experiment early, getting data quick or going home early. Don't just follow lab procedure without thinking. Always think and understand each procedures and reasons during experiment and note them on your lab notebook. He is a tough grader but the experiments are very fun for me.
I should have listen to former students' reviews... Now I'm not sure whether I'll pass this class or not... Hard tests, no curve, smh...
This was one of the toughest classes I have ever had. He uses an online grading system that grades you wrong even when you are correct. He is very rude and defensive and doesn't explain or teach you anything. Low score on lab quiz will drop your grade significantly. He does not check to see if your lab results are correct so tests are impossible.
Do yourself a favor and do not take him. He is the worst professor I have ever had. His online tests are heavy and super HARDDDDDDD. Good luck with lab reports because you basically have to teach yourself. He cant teach, test or grade. take professor Gilewski or Chamras, they both are very nice. These good reviews cant be real.
Hardest class I've taken to date, but you'll learn. Attend the after class meetings, this is your best time for questions. Do not take what he says personally as he can be rude. Bonus points from the final can bump you up literally an entire letter grade. If he sees you trying HARD and you are prepared he will put the effort in to help you.
Terrible choice if you have other options available. Lectures were near useless, exams are long and difficult, and the overall experience is just so unnecessarily difficult. Take another prof or just go to PCC for chem. This is the one and only class I ever felt so defeated no matter what I did. Save yourself a headache, and chose another prof
The worst professor I have met during 3 years of college. Especially during remote learning! Being a part of this class is as bad as being infected with covid. PLEASE PLEASE change your entire schedule in order to be able to take another professor! His handwriting and explanations are the worst I have ever heard in my life!
The most unprofessional teacher I have taken, he cried in class because a student asked a question... Although I passed the class and I found his class fairly mediocre, I wouldn't take this teacher. Sometimes was unresponsive through canvas, tests were easy but you need to study. Lab section wasn't too bad he explained things which was mediocre.
I think the Navy SEALs have a higher graduation rate than the individuals in his class but he's a great guy at heart
