fun guy, very funny. wants to get you involved. kinda strict with grading (wants to give everyone a B, almost no A's or C's)
this guy is awesome! I wasn't interested at all upon entering but then he was so passionate about his teaching he got me into it! You even get to teach the class with other students for a week..sounds scary but it turned out great.
Great Teacher. You deffinetly want this teacher. He is very smart. He gets you thinking about alot issues. Hes not very hard. With a minimal amount of work you could get a B. A requires a bit more work. He is awesome.
Mr. Gmelin is a great teacher, very theatrical. His daily assignments make you think a lot. use literary criticism to learn about yourself and others. i took his class over the summer, he grades hard, you'll have a great experience if your classmates work collaboratively and participate, worth it
Really fun class, I looked forward to going every Monday, Wednesday!
Very strict on grading, gives a ton of work as if we are all English majors. DO NOT TAKE
Gmelin was a good teacher and i had we had a great class. He was very thought provoking and everyone participated. It was not the easiest class but on our last essay and final i worked hard and got a B.
Awesome teacher, everytime I left class I had a smile on my face. He made the class laugh a lot and I learned to better my writing. Definitely take this professor for English!
I took Gmelin for summer school and although there was A LOT of work in a short period of time it was definately managable. There was a lot of reading but the stories we were assigned were all interesting. He his style of teaching and personality keeps you on your toes. He's really funny...oh and HOT. He is SO HOT. haha.
Great teacher, however very strict on attendance.
I love Gmelin! He was so funny, and totally motivating. He doesn't appreciate you not coming, but it's worth it. Debates were basically what we did, and he was encouraging when it came to saying what you felt. I got an A, I didn't think his grading was too hard. He taught me SO much about writing quality essays. AWESOME TEACHER.
He is an ****, he gives good grades only to girls and people who thinks the way he does. I hated this class.
Very hard class in the summer. A lot of work, however the class is very interesting! Did I mention it was really hard? Never had to work so hard for a B in my life! Grades hard, but fair. Gives you credit for participation in class and like when you show up to class all the time! Some of his projects are scary but are fun if you stay on to top of i
Professor Gmelin style of teaching is different, but okay I guess. There are things that I like and dislike about him. Debates were basically all we did in class-- sometimes I wondered if I was taking English or Debate. He loves to provoke his students to think, ponder and analyze everything. He does not, I repeat, DOES NOT tolerate poor attendance
Couldn't Stand his grading style. If you wrote a paper that apposed his thought process you were not going to get an A on your paper. Don't bother to argue your point about a paper you wrote because he will do nothing about it. He has no tolerance for attendance issues. I wrote every paper the night before and got a B in the class.
I liked the guy. He loves to play devil's advocate in class discussions and is chock full of sarcasm, which most people don't seem to like but I found refreshing and funny. Tough grader but I stuck to the assignments and did my research and never got below an A-. LOTS of reading, most of it boring; papers were pretty dull, and attendance mandatory.
Bob rocks. He's a bit tough on the grading, but his teaching style totally forces you to think for yourself and develope your critical thinking skills. He really teaches you how to put together a good argument.
BEST English teacher I have EVER had. Class was always interesting, I learned a lot, and he always gives sample essays. I was horrified of the concept of a research paper, but Gmelin really helped me through it. Take his class if: you are an opinionated, yet open minded, critical thinker. Forget about fluffy, flowery, meaningless, bullsh** essays.
Gmelin is helpful and fair, makes your think outside the box. He is very reasonable. I would take another one of his classes.
Essay happy.
GMelin is a great prefessor! If you enjoy interesting engaging class discussions then you'll love this class. Attendance is mandatory, but can miss a few classes and still be OK. Can get buy w/out reading everything assigned. Grading is fair and he's NOT a grammer fanatic. Deffinitly opinionated. I would take him for ANY english class.
This guy is unbelievable! I'd like to know what his peers think of him. His ego is huge.On the first day today he gloats around trying to scare everybody and goes off on a diatribe on how he's going to gut the fun out of English. This guy has no skill as a teacher and must be teaching at the community college level for a reason. This guy is a joke
Bob Gmelin is a sarcastic p-r-i-c-k. But he told us to write that. Mr. Gmelin expects the best out of you, will challenge your beliefs regardless of his stance and, while unabashedly crude at times, is a fun & animated teacher. Show improved efforts through the semester, and you will succeed. I'd strongly recommend him!
he is very crude likes talking about innapropiate things ..... i was very offended that he would talk like that .... lots of essays to write but you get to peer edit .... i took it durring the summer
His class discussions are a bit racey so if you're conservative prepare yourself. He's charismatic and engaging. He is so helpful. Always willing to meet before or after class to look over papers. Read the text and Show Up.
gmelin is a fantastic teacher, has a strange sense of humor!not big on notes or nething!lots of group discussions that really help! absolutly phenominal class!! :) also very easy!!!there r four essays and a final!!!!!
The Course description says that the class develops high-level skills in critical thinking and argumentation. If that is what you are looking for then take his class. He is not an easy A by any means, but the class discussions and subject matter are interesting and engaging. It is a writing class so expect to write a lot. I would recommend .
Gmelin is a good teacher with interesting point of views that make you think outside the box, good sense of humor. Class wasn't terrible hard he is very fair and more there for the students.
Gmelin is hilarious... to me, at least. I thought I was getting a B, B+ at best, but I got an A. He wants you to think outside your little box and be...oh, i don't know...better? Also, his questionable appropriate conversational topics are interesting. Also, an impressive impressionist and substantial tie-collection.
Watching Gmelin teach is like watching a sarcastically funny sit-com. He is a tough grader and you do a lot of reading and writing. Mid-term & final are EASY in-class essays. Group project is a lot of work (we had to teach a 3 hr class). Overall I would recommend him.. he seems scary the first day, but his class was fun and educational.
bob is a great teacher. he likes to joke alot and his comments are quite offensive to some. overall hes a dope teacher. highly recommended
One of the best English teachers I have had, and will have since this is my last English class. I was certainly suprised to have such a fair profesor in college since most lean to the left politically.
Dope guy. He's funny in his own sarcastic way but I like it. I think he only tries to scare people away just so he can...because he's a pretty chill professor for the most part.
extremely offensive, but a great teacher and a great guy. i took his 1A class this past summer & enjoyed it thoroughly. it is a very conversation oriented class, so get ready to think.
Gmelin was the funniest teacher I've had. He's offensive but only if you're a person who takes things personal. The class isn't centered around English but instead he discusses worldy topics and MAKES YOU THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. Show up and put in the effort and you should do fine. If you try to BS your way through it he will know and you will fail
This professor is nice guy he helps you lot abd tell you what you need to work on more on your essay but he is hilarious professor
Unless you have no sort of emotions, I would avoid this teacher. He is fanatical about discussing controversy;it's all he cares about; not his students. I had to drop with a W because he expected us to be ok with watching extremely graphic violence, all in the nane of "discussion". His class is NOT a safe place for any but the most desensitized.
I took Critical Thinking/Writing. It was a pretty easy class as I'm not an amazing writer and still got an A. If he didn't require us to be in class without the threat of dropping us if we missed 3 days, I'm sure I could have done well without attending. He is entertaining, but mostly irrelevant. Teaches us more to argue than write.
Funny teacher. If you get offended easly you wont like him. He makes the class interesting and fun. You should take him!
I am currently still taking Gmelin's class. Many come to find him rude or offensive, mostly females. I am a female and he kept me everyone else interested. People are way too sensitive. He holds everyone accountable, treats you like an adult. Do the readings he assigns. He gives little quizzes when you walk in the door. Easy work. GREAT teacher.
Gmelin is not afraid to "go there" if you are easily offended or overly conservative I do not recommend this class. If you can put up with his perversion then you will get something in return, the ability to think critically about the world. Gmelin is one of the best teachers I have ever had. You have to WORK for an A, they dont come easy.
Gmelin is super outgoing. He keeps class interesting. I would recommend him. We literally did 4 essays the whole semester and that was it (that's what your grade is based on). He know and says that he has "horrid time management skills," but at least he realizes it. I recommend him if you enjoy funny teachers!
BEST ENGLISH TEACHER. For a 9:30 am class he as more energy than a jitter bug. Absolutely hilarious and tells you a lot about his personal life making it easy to respect and listen to him. 4 research papers are required but they are all fun topics you can choose within guidelines. Highly recommended!!!
he is too self-absorbed
He was a great teacher for me, but possibly not for everyone. He makes fun of himself a lot and teaches the material well. Not a lot of assignments other than the 4 main essays. I recommend him.
Hilarious teacher. Don't ever take him too seriously though. This was my first college english class. Just focus on writing what he trying to teach. Don't try and get all fancy cause he will look right through that. Last essay I barely tried and got an A. All I did was try to show him I understood what he was teaching. Not the actual content.
If you passed High School english you should have no problem passing this class. Very conversational feel and you write 4 outside essays and 1 in class essay (but our midterm essay was canceled.) Just participate and he'll love you
i love this guy. chill teacher. i recommend him in the early mornings his caffeine level is at his highest and hes hilarious at that point.
Literally the funniest teacher I've had at Sierra. He is super chill and I always look forward to this class. 4 essays throughout the semester, but you have a lot of time to do them, plus you get in groups and correct each others essays. Doesn't get your papers back fast unfortunately. He is extremely interesting, I recommend him 100%
Very unprofessional teacher. He is extremely biased and often swears in class. Terrible work ethic for an English teacher who should have a vast vocabulary to pick from, yet he uses the most vulgar of words. And he often gets off track, it was very hard to learn anything.
Class consists of 4 essays. He loves to talk about p0rn and movies. Grades strict. Wants you to master MLA format. If you know how to write essays well, and want a funny, lazy teacher who cancels class 5 times a semester, go for it. If you have an opinion on a topic, make sure you have 50 reasons why you think that. He'll push your buttons.
Wants you to master MLA format.Dont If you know how to write essays well, and want a lazy teacher who cancels class 5 times a semester and only talks about his book, that will never be pupblished, its the class for you. Doesnt grade to hard either, as long as you agree with his opinion.. cancles class a lot too
If you are a sissy or get offended easy he is not for you. Entertaining and great fun, keep an open mind and participate. Don't have to agree with him, just back up your side well and you will be fine. Looking for a regular English class, this is not for you. Looking to be entertained and want to argue, have fun.
Most lecture days u can skip and you will still pass the class. On the days he actually describes essay stuff, he is very clear in what he expects. Editing sessions help a lot. Lots of feedback on essays on what to improve on. Textbook will help clarify what he wants to see in essays. The final essay is about the class itself.
Hilarious Professor spent most of the time talking about things out of topic, class was never really about english. Class got cancelled about 3 times. He is a tough grader. His essays had a point and were sort of clear. When asked for help he did not help out a lot. Was not super happy about this class.
Robert is great in defending any side of the issue. The whole class is about arguing and you'll have to back up any claim, even a good one. His grading criteria is not clear. Robert never reviews a grade. He asked me to cite my own ideas, that I didn't steal from anywhere. His program can acuse you in plagiarism for 7 consecutive words, your words
Professor Gmelin was a pretty funny teacher! That honestly kept me from feeling sleepy during his class because he was loud and tried to make us laugh. The class itself was pretty relaxed and I opened the book probably three times at the most. The essays are big and he grades them really thoroughly and tough. I would take him again.
Professor Gmelin was awesome. Really enjoyed this class. Definitely the funniest professor I've had. Each lecture was hilarious and he had a passion for teaching/writing. Essays were tough, not the type English class where you can write it the night before. Helpful and easy to talk to. Would recommend to others.
This class was an absolute joke. I learned absolutely nothing except how to keep myself awake for an hour and a half. Your grade is based off of 4 papers that you write. I got A's on all of them but I felt like I never knew what he was trying to teach us. Gets off topic a lot and is very unclear. Glad it's over!
Bob Gmelin's a great professor. He's helpful, gives good feedback, and his classes are hilarious. You do have to attend class. He might offend you occasionally. He bases your grade off four papers and a final. So what? His is probably the most interesting English class I've ever taken. I strongly recommend him if you want to learn.
I am an expert, and I can now speak the truth about it!
Legendary professor! You won't find many others like him. At least not at Sierra. I've never had a professor that is as "real" as Bob. He isn't afraid to be coarse and thankfully everyone has either loved it (me) or tolerated it so far. He is wicked knowledgable and very quick-witted. I wouldn't trade my experience in his class for anything.
Hot mess. Not so much opinionated, more just likes to shock people and get them to react. White dude that repeatedly said the N word for shock factor. Exactly like an AP Lang class except that you don't learn anything. 2nd half of class is group presentations. 3 essays and 2 in-class essays but he gets behind schedule so that's no guarantee.
Not very good at making sure students understand concepts because he rarely stays on topic long enough to actually teach them. He asked me to explain two literary devices I mentioned in my paper (I don't think he knew what they were). I didn't learn a single thing. If you like just talking about stuff this is a good class not if you want to learn.
This class was a lot of fun. I can genuinely say I was never bored. There are a lot of class discussions, but people actually get involved because the topics are interesting. I feel like this class can also be enjoyed by people who don't even like reading literature.
He's a bad professor, period. He almost always gets side tracked about his past memories and spends 60 of the 90 minutes trying to convince us its relevant to the class. He barely teaches the actual material .4 classes cancelled, never helps you with the actual essays and makes you do everything in groups(but no one even knows what they're doing)
Bob is an excellent professor! I have never had an English class that is as awesome as his. I took him for English 1A and I would take any other of his classes. He is honest, funny, and extremely smart. I would highly recommend taking his class. There is NO homework throughout the semester and your grade is based off four pretty simple essays.
Some may think he's offensive but it's just part of his character. He has a quirky sense of humor but he made the class interesting. Had an interesting topic of the day and he loves to be challenged. We had 4 essays and 1 final essay in class. You will get an A in the class if you follow the prompt of the essays and participate in class.
Bob has to be the best teacher I've ever had. He is not politically correct, cusses a ton, and speaks his mind. He goes off on trails when teaching. He pushes people, but he allows them to push back. He taught me how to voice my own opinion. Four essays, no homework. Take his class if you aren't afraid to laugh in school. Absolutely love him!
Super fun and informative class. Engaging all the way. He will make you a better writer.
If you are taking this class just for the credit, Gmelin is a fine choice. There are a lot of open discussions about random subjects that loosely tie in to the course. 4 essays. If you are already skilled in essay writing you will do fine. You have to attend class for participation but the lectures do not teach much. He is approachable.
OK, so Gmelin is crazy!! but he's a cool dude. His lectures are interesting, however, he does tend to be moody. He gives great feedback on essays. His class consists of 4 essays and then a final. The final is about what you learned in class. If you come into class ready to participate, then you'll do good. Would totally take him again.
Awesome, awesome, awesome professor! Perhaps my favorite prof as of yet . . . lectures are incredibly interesting and more conversation-like. Grade based off a couple group projects and a couple essays, including two in class. Easy A as long as you put in as much effort as you can, grades based on effort rather than the skill you came in with.
Professor Gmelin is the funniest professor I've ever had. He makes the class environment very laid back and a space for discussion on a ton of topics. Our class had 4 papers that cover different topics, a cancelled mid term, and a very simple final. If you participate you will do well on the final. Put in effort for the grade.
Frustrating, a lot of the time class is canceled at last minute, then there are a lot of at home reading that are mandatory because there are pop quizzes. The quizzes and 3 essays are what the whole class is graded on, and the essays are graded pretty hard. Really like the professor he is hilarious, just didn't like his teaching stlye.
The funniest and most daring professor I have ever had. He pressed our buttons and really made us think and engage in the class. He gives good feedback on essays and is typically not crazy about spelling or grammar. He is mostly looking for content and structure. I challenged him in debates every class period and still finished with an A.
This class was okay. He doesn't grade things until last minute, he hasn't graded half of my stuff from January. He also marked an assignment as incomplete when I turned it in on time and answered everything he wanted. He comes off rude in his comments and doesn't give good feedback on what to fix. He grades essays hard and that's half your grade.
Mr. Gmelin was a roller coaster to say the least. At the beggining of the class, every student was taken by surprise with Gmelin's energy. He is very loud and sporadic. Nevertheless, this was one of the most educational and best classes I have ever taken. The late grading and inconsistency is a hard pill to swallow but worth it.
Funny, open-minded.The work he gave was easy but the way he graded it was harsh.Poor feedback, last minute grader.Only feed back I got on essays was a few comments: "really?" "not always." "I mean I guess".I wasn't able to see my grade in the class until the semester was over.He locked the overall grade, students only see is points for DBs&essays.
This online class was set up terribly. I reached out multiple times asking for help/advice and to discuss the medical challenges I was going through while taking this class. I only got a response back once, and it was an unhelpful sentence. I'm typically a carefree, "A" student, but this class was so bad that I made an account for this website.
Makes an effort to not show up to his own course. Gets sick regularly and cancels class, then expects student participation. Says he is disliked for offensive humor, but maybe it's his general disinterest in teaching his class?Takes a month to grade just about anything. Does not teach you. You read then do a group presentation for half a sem.
While Professor Gmelin was very funny and engaging, as a student, you feel hopeless in his class. He will tell you to read a chapter of a book, not elaborate on it at all in the course, and then grade your papers like he taught you anything about writing about literature. "don't expect to get an A in this class" -gmelin
Super cool guy, I really enjoyed his class. Plenty of "mandatory" reading but you can get by without doing it. Grade is just based on like 5 essays throughout the course. He is kind of a hard grader, but not every class can be an easy A. Would definitely take again and would recommend to anyone.
Terrible. Cancelled often, takes over a month to grade papers, gives sarcastic unhelpful feedback on said papers. His classes were more like hour long rants of whatever he felt like talking about, made a classmate cry once. Didn't learn a single thing about literature or critical thinking. No point in attending class.
Gmelin was frequently sick and cancelled many classes. The classes that did happen weren't about English, but whatever he felt like rambling about. Didn't respond to time-sensitive emails for days, and was unhelpful once he did. Graded randomly, and his feedback was awful. "Are you sure," "Okay," etc. Wouldn't elaborate on criticisms when asked.
He on a weekly basis was sick, down internet, his computer not working. Weekly lectures would be him critiquing political and social points and little on English! His essay feedback included "what" and "are you sure".We are in the last week of class, most of the grades from mid Feb. and beyond are not graded. He does not respond promptly.
Although he was a very nice person and really wanted his students to succeed in the class, most things didn't get graded until about a month after we turned them in and he didn't seem to be very good with the internet. 2nd half of the semester there was about 3-5 discussion boards a week with three 6-8 page essays for the whole semester.
Talked about robot mpreg in week one. Asked us to buy overpriced books without even knowing the cost. Doesn't actually teach English; just goes on random rants. Grades are very late. When I asked for help, he just told me to “find my own voice.” He's nice, but you won't learn much, and it's frustrating. Avoid it for your sanity.
