Absolutely no structure to the class. He promises to convert you into music appreciating machines but fails miserably. Crazy man. Hates when you walk out of his class early. He once chased down a kid and confronted him publicly. The quizzes, which are never worth anything though he says they are, reveal the exam. Easy class but a pain to sit throug
A true musician. The class is only interesting if you like the subject, you learn a lot. Quizes and tests are cake if you take good notes. He's not boring what-so-ever and teaches as if he was telling a story. I was never bored. Take him!
You must go to class! His class is pretty easy. 2 exams, a concert w/ essay and 1 essay. I thought the class was pretty interesting! Take him!!!
Must go to class. He takes attendance no matter how big the class is and if the class is extended he will take attendance after the 10 minute break to see if you left. if he cancels class or cuts it early he will make you write a pointless paper. He doesnt help with any work and will call you out in front of the class if your talking
go to class! he lectures everyday and his test are mainly based on lectures. you dont need the Crows book but pay attention in class. he does call you out when youre not paying attention and he can get very sarcastic sometimes. there really isnt that much work to do for his class either, but you gotta make sure you always go
Grabowski is hilarious. Sometimes he's completely bipolar and will be happy one day and completely pissed the next. He acts like jazz is the most important thing in life, but just go to his lectures and you'll be fine. Extremely easy class. He basically gives you the A.
what a pain this guy is! so selfconscious, always thinking somebody is thinking bad of him, control freak, his playing is boring and dated, so are his poor unoriginal compositions, so he has to rely on being a control freak in class to make non musician students think he is a legend, easy class though
Good guy and an easy class. He really tries to help everyone out and even though the class is really boring you'd have to try to get anything less than a B+
Great teacher! I recommend him!
He takes random attendance. He will stop his lecture if he sees someone talking or with their phone out. You have to bring the book every class. He has a huge musician's ego. He's great when he's in a good mood. If not, be careful or he'll single you out in front of 150 other students.
dont be late, EVER! DO NOT BUY THE JAZZ ANECDOTES! NEVER used. the other textbook is very useful when doing the final and needed for surprise quizes/attendence. i do not recommend doing this, BUT, i didnt do any of the term papers but got an A on the midterm/final and ended the class with an A
He is pretty easy if you attend class and take notes of what he says. Also pay attention to the music he plays and try to recognize the elements he describes. The book he uses has a lot of extra stuff you don't really need. And don't buy the Jazz Anecdotes book cause you are never going to use it.
His classes can get boring but they are not that bad. I did all my work for the class and received good grades, only missed one day, and I ended up with a C. A friend of mine did not even take the midterm and she got a B+. He is disorganized and don't be surprised if he grades you unfairly too.
Robert and Bob Grabowski are the same. 2 online moodle exams, open note/book. one listening exam of the styles covered. 2 concerts/essay. and a term paper. Can be a bit moody. Most professional (strict) teacher I've ever seen (and I'm a junior). Your not gonna use the jazz anecdotes book, never used it and got 49/50 on first exam. Go to class!
He is a H.S. teacher but it was the easiest class I've ever taken at FIU EVER! I took his exams which he said were not all identical, (they were identical) and got in the high 80's and did his concert papers but not the term paper and missed class for over a month, I only came to his review the class before the final, TAKE FOR EASY A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Easy A class. Write down everything he says because you will be tested largely on that along with his book. The Anecdote book is not really needed. He's a stickler for ppl walking out early or coming in late if you haven't given prior notice, but in all fairness he's probably like that because it's mostly (immature) freshmen taking the course.
Professor is funny, very sarcastic, chill, and understandable. Very helpful with any concerns with class/other issues. Note taking is a must but they help with quizzes/exams. Gives homework rarely - they're usually written papers about music performances from jazz musicians. Overall, if you must take an arts credit, take this class.
Professor Grabowski knows a lot about Jazz, he will go on a whole class about one thing. He cares if you talk. The best thing to do is listen and be quiet. His class is enjoyable and i recommend you taking it for an easy A. If you listen you should get an A. HIghly recommend it!
This course had the makings for a great class; however, it was a disappointing experience. The professor was not engaging and had a poor response time to inquiries. Moreover, he never communicated the student's progress over the course of the semester. The worst course in my undergraduate career - online and otherwise.
He's a cool dude. If your on his good side, you'll get an A. If you aren't well, sucks for you. All you have to do is show up for class! He's a bit of an odd dude, but most musicians are. Fun, easy class though.
HE IS SO CUTE! WHEN HE DOES HIS MOTOR-BOAT IMPRESSION IN CLASS ITS LIKE OMG!!!1 HE HELPS ALOT, THE CLASS IS INTERESTING. YOU SHOULD TAKE THE CLASS!
Attendance isn't mandatory but it would help if you showed up. Listen, this class has the potential to be an interesting one, but all he does is talk the WHOLE class and expects you to write down what is important. I honestly listened and read, and I struggled for the A. Don't take if you want to satisfy an art credit. Try something else!
He is very rude and a complete drama queen. I advise you to choose a different class for your arts credit because you will not enjoy this class. I regret taking this class. I was miserable. He seemed funny at first, but he ended up being just unbearable. And he holds the class after it's over sometimes. He has a colossal ego. Run while you can!
This class is pretty easy and the professor is not as bad as people make him seem. he is a little weird and has a weird humor, but thats all. if you be respectful to him and go to class ON TIME you will have no problems with him or the course. I like the course.
Good teacher - doesn't allow phones or laptops in class, actually requires people to write notes with a pen and paper - what a notion, huh? I'd recommend this class to someone, just stay on his good side and try get your concert(s) done early. Also, don't buy his e-text...try get a used text from someone else for cheaper.
He's a cool guy. Makes the class interesting. Don't bother with the e-text, its always on the fritz, just get a text book from someone. Tests all come from the book, and papers truly require little thought process. Even though class holds over late, he cancels class on Fridays.
He's a really good teacher. He obviously loves teaching this, being really involved in Jazz himself. The only complaint that I have about him is that he is really unorganized. He told us our midterm was a certain day and changed it 3 times. But all in all, pretty decent guy. Class is easy as long as you actually go to class.
EASY CLASS! If you need an upper level elective take this! That being said you don't learn anything in this class. He barely ever responds emails and you wont know your grade till the end. Grading: 15% "participation" 15% weekly music logs (1 paragraph on what you listened too) four 3 page album reviews. very lenient grader (you should get 100%)
Had him for evolution of jazz. Awesome guy, super chill but commands the respect of his students... That being said, no cell phones/laptops/ipads. Calls people out for being late or disruptive. If you're that disruptive person you wont like him. Otherwise he's a lot more knowledgeable than he looks and is a jazz musician.
Do not take!! He is a complete jerk. Doesn't give out any assignments the whole semester and then loads them on you the last 2 weeks. Never answers emails and he likes to put his students down. Syllabus says he grades attendance but he only took it once. Overall, not a good pick. Take something else.
Great professor, explains everything if you ask. Show up to class and TAKE NOTES, must buy the etext. Just an easy A.
Lectures are extremely boring. All of what he says has nothing to do with the quizzes he gives online, read the book and google the descriptions of the different genres of music and you will pass. I passed with an A+
his classes are super boring but you do need to attend because everything he says comes on the examdoesnt say day of exam until the week before exams are online had to watch 6 videos on youtube about 8-10min and write a paper about each the six papers plus concert one all due day of final. final is a listening ex. identify the type of jazz playing
At first he's seems like a cool corny professor BUT as the semester continues he turns into a female and complains about everything. Hes very anal about phone use and note taking if your pencil is down he will call you out in class. He's notes have nothing to do with the quizzes. DONT TAKE CLASS youll regret it lectures are hell and so boring
This is by far THE worse teacher ive ever had at MDC. He thinks he's funny but he's really not, he's rude and sarcastic. His lessons are BORING when I thought it would be a fun class to take. You will regret taking this teacher after the 2nd day of class, even if you really need the class DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER
Very sarcastic and tells not so funny jokes but he takes the effort to lecture what is exactly in the book even though you should still read the book. He makes you go to a jazz show but that was a great experience.
He knows his material but STAY AWAY. He's a good teacher but if you can take another professor for Jazz, do it. His tests are pretty difficult and he makes you identify different Jazz genres, it's annoying. That class is painfully LONG and he can talk for hours. DO NOT GO LATE. He's nice and funny but his class is annoying. READ THE BOOK
I ignored the warnings and decided to take this class. HE IS A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. He is extremely ignorant and unhelpful. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He will ignore you and your questions and especially your emails. He thinks he is high and mighty, and that everyone else is beneath him. And he portrays himself in an arrogant, pretentious manner. AVOID.
Took him for the Evolution of Jazz. Possibly my worst decision ever. the class isn't terribly hard he's just annoying as hell and his class makes you want to swan dive off of a cliff. he's also a terrible/confusing teacher.
I really enjoyed Professor Grabowski. He can be a little rude but it's only in response to what the students give him. Do not come late to this class or he will call you out on it. As long as you come to class, pay attention, take notes, and skim over the book, there is no way you won't pass this class. He's very passionate and pretty understanding
Honestly either i experienced a miracle or he is the nicest professor alive. I took this class online and completely forgot to take the midterm, ended up getting a C on the final and still managed to get an A in the class! I strongly recommend or just be extremely lucky.
His lectures in class have nothing to do with the exams he gives on Blackboard. The online textbook gives more information than in class but Google is a good source for exams. He will call you out if you are late. Concert papers are easy. TAKE HIM.
Love this guy. Interesting course, with a lot of personal anecdotes in lecture. He has a lot to say and is very passionate about the course. Pay attention, take notes, and read the short chapters and you will pretty much get the A. Mandatory to attend 2 jazz concerts, but other than that, none of the work is tedious. Definitely recommend.
His class is not too hard, it's kinda fun... at times. He is very strict and he will call you out if you use your phone or leave early. besides that he is cool and only makes you write two papers listen to music and do the midterm and final.
2 test, midterm and final. That being said, Grabowski is very sarcastic (I didnt mind his humor), really passionate about Jazz and is easy to pass. Come to class and pay attention. Attendance isnt mandatory so if you dont want to come to class, get his online book and read it.
His lectures are very long and not too informative on the subject, you have to read his online textbook. Also, he gave almost no work the entire year and assigned an 8 page paper at the end. It's still an easy class.
Passionate about what he teaches, but he's annoying bc he kinda wastes class time calling people out. One time I was taking notes but paused to look at him while he was talking and he got salty and asked why I wasn't taking notes.. but an easy A either way. He also cancels class very often so that's cool. You won't need the book if you don't skip.
Was not very helpful and had extremely long lectures. He will call you out if you stand up or are using your phone. Class was fairly easy though. Not much hw a midterm, and final and one extremely long essay at the end. He knows his stuff so if you are very interested in Jazz I recommend.
My favorite part about this class was listening to Grabowski teach because he is so passionate about the subject. When someone is that into it its easy to learn from them. Inspirational!
This class was interesting, not a Jazz fan at all, but the professor made it cool. He is really into his music and passionate about it. Not a difficult class, go to concerts for grades, an 8 page term paper, midterm and exam, and a listening log. If you do 2 additional concerts you get extra credit, I recommend doing that.
Since it was an auditorium class, attendance wasn't 'mandatory' but he claimed he'd give us a pop quiz if the class seemed more empty. Makes you attend a jazz concert and write a reaction paper, which was not too hard. If you attend every class, you don't need the book. He wrote the book... Listening to music is crucial.
He just talks the whole entire period. He's very nice and understanding if you take the time to speak to him. He don't like when people interrupt his classroom and would call you if he needs to. Students write what he is saying and he mentions almost every detail that would be in the chapter. If you do his work, you'll do fine. class is boring
Very rude and disrespectful. If theres another professor to take for a course, take them.
I was fascinated by the content, but he can be very rude to students sometimes. Go to class and you'll do well. Take notes from what he talks about.
He talks throughout the whole class. Whatever he talks about in class, students have to write them down on their notes but he calls you out if you're using a phone or making noise in his class. Other than that, he is nice and understanding. He's very respectable.
Honestly, I completely wasted my money with this course. He only showed up for 1/4 of the semester because he was undergoing surgeries (which I understand), but in my opinion that does not excuse a professor from teaching/providing curriculum. Did not learn anything the entire semester. In a MUSIC BUSINESS class, all he talked about was staging.
Same thing every class. Go into class, pull out your notebook, and get ready to take notes for the whole class. If you're interested in jazz, then by all means take it. I found it to be a boring class.
Professor was extremely rude and did not teach for more than half the semester due to health reasons, understandable but often times didn't email when class was suppose to be cancelled. If you can deal with the professors attitude take the class it was pretty easy, just expect to take notes every class.
He spends so much time calling out individuals who are on their phones. All he asks for is for people not to do that and they still do it....... Wasn't really a bad teacher, you show up to class & write notes the entire time & then leave. He wasn't there some of the time because he was having emergency surgeries. Must got to two Jazz concerts.
This class is pretty easy. He lectures every single class and threatens to give pop quizzes if the class isn't full, but he never did. Read the chapters from the book he wrote and take notes, and you will pass with flying colors. Tests are easy and the term paper is even easier.
Grabowski in my opinion was an excellent professor, he is very passionate about the subject he teaches and its easy to grasp information from him. just take notes and pay attention in class, study and do his homework and papers which aren't very hard and you are bound to get an easy A.
Great professor who teaches mostly through lectures. Pretty easy class if you pay attention. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! he wrote the book, simply coming to his lectures is enough to pass the class. I got an A in the class without ever touching the book.
He is very disorganized, rude, sarcastic, and his assignments are all over the place. The tests are not even directly from his boring lecture notes.
Although I couldn't stand him by the end of the semester, I received an A- I wasn't expecting. I must've approached his class the right way. That being said, he is your average lecture professor, it's all about how you take notes, study, and write your papers in this class. There's barely homework, a midterm, final, 6 page essay, and two concerts.
This professor is HORRENDOUS. Do not take him at all, ever. I got an A in the class but honestly this class was atrocious to take. He is completely unaccessible for questions, his tests contain information not presented in any of the notes. He's terrible terrible terrible. Please spare yourself from the ridiculousness of this professor.
He's okay. The text book isn't mandatory, but it really helps to study for the mid-term and final. Only those 2 exams, a term paper and concert reflections. It's pretty easy, but you do have to show up to class if you want to know the info for the exams, but he doesn't actually take attendance. No HW unless he misses class (maybe 2 or 3 times).
Hes alright. He constantly says BUY THE BOOK! but you literally dont have to. I didnt buy the book and went to most lectures and got an A. Just pay attention, do the papers, and go to the concerts. Cancels randomly which is nice, I guess, but gives small hw assignments on that day. Wasnt that bad, but wasnt the best either. You can pass it
No homework. Two papers, though nothing too crazy. Midterm and final are based on lecture. Don't read too deep into the book. Just skim before class. No HW. Just show up to class. Talks a lot, it may seem off topic, but it's probably on the exam. Seldom responds to emails :/
This class was just overall boring. I made the mistake of buying the textbook which is like $90 and is literally the same thing as his lectures. Doesnt take attendance, no pop quizzes. Two exams(midterm and final), barely any homework(mostly if he cancels and he barely cancels) and the term paper is 5 pages.
Worst professor in perhaps all of FIU. Doesn't respond to emails, and constantly treats students like their idiots. The only tag for him but that's only because 90% of the questions on his exams are on the dumb book he wrote which you need for the class, If this site wasn't so nice i'd say much worst things about him; he deserves it.
Mixed feelings about this professor. He WILL NOT respond to emails. He is extremely vague about assignments which leaves you questioning a lot. On the other hand, he's not a tough grader. Just make sure the artist you choose for your essays (4 of them) are within the genre he wants or else youll get a zero. Easy discussion blogs. Dont need book
Chill guy.
Few but easy assignments. Lectures are long and boring but he tries to make jokes sometimes. Tests are incredibly easy if you read the book and take notes.
THIS PROFESSOR IS TERRIBLE! Do not take him under any circumstances. He doesnt respond to emails, has no office hours available, or a telephone number to call. Contact is unavailable. He doesnt care for the success of his students, and in the rare occasion of a response, he is arrogant and sarcastic basically treating you like an idiot.
I took this class online which requires you to take a Midterm, final and write two papers based on a jazz concert that you have to attend. I bought the book but honestly you dont really need it, Google is just as helpful if you seach right. Overall, online his class is pretty easy.
I liked him as a teacher and a person. Very respectful and nice, I have no idea why others are saying he's mean. Not a tough grader and i'm pretty sure he grades based on completion. His tests were easy and he does take attendance daily. Long class but he tried his best to make it fun. Easy and enjoyable. Answers ay questions after class.
Just a quite condescending professor and has quite the ego. Definitely knows what he's talking about because he is a Jazz musician but his lectures are very long-winded and usually don't contain any other aids to keep attention.
Took the class online. Grade consists of a midterm, a final, discussions, and two concert attendance. Very unclear in grading and concert process. Very sarcastic and rude when I contacted him. Don't bother buying the (HIS) book. The midterm contained little of what we had learned and was all new to me.
I would advise to take this professor online. He broke his foot for my semester so he would constantly cancel class and sometimes assign a paper which are easily manageable. I committed the mistake of not reading the book for the mid term and well it was mostly the book. Its good to have a study group even though he advises not to.
This professor is so boring you will walk in to class and want to sleep. He does not make lectures interesting instead he makes them absolutely unbearable, this guy is strange and definitely makes me uncomfortable. His teaching style fails to capture anyones attention.
dont know why theres a lot of hate here. took him in summer, small class. there was a decent amount of hw. show up and try not to leave early. do the homework. study for tests. straight forward class, cool dude. dont get book tho, its the class lectures, just take notes, listen and youre golden.
This is the absolut worst professor I have ever had in my entire 18 years of being alive on this earth. Literally all he does is lecture and he barely even answers questions. Hes ego is beyond words, and all of the things he lectures arent even close to what is on the actual test. Theres two main exams, and the class is basically based off that.
This dude talks the whole time and its interesting if youre into the subject but sometimes he goes on some tangents that make no sense and its kind of awkward. I dont ever remember there being any homework He focused the course on the major assignments that were turned in at the end. I never needed my textbook the notes were basically the book
He's okay. His lectures can be interesting sometimes, but they tend to be long and don't really have to do with the book. I would recommend the class pitch in for buying one book if completely necessary. It's his book and you only need it for the midterm and final, but if you take good notes you should be fine. He's a little strange, but he's ok.
This professor lectures a lot but they do not assign a lot of homework. Take notes, exams are based on the lectures given in class.
If you take this class online you are 100% on your own. Does not grade discussion posts and exams are on honorlock. You're expected to take notes from the textbook, the notes he provides are vague and don't cover what's needed on the exam. He does not answer a single email you send him. Expected to write papers with no specifics on grading.
Expect to get no feedback on how you are doing in the course until the last minute. If you ask a question get ready for a snarky reply when he feels like it. I don't know if it's only with online classes but this professor made me worry about my grade in this elective more than anything. Save yourself the energy and pick another professor.
Expect to be for more than an hour two times a week in the most boring lectures I've ever heard, and I took an english class. This professor does not care about his students and just spits out useless lessons that will be 5-10% needed for your actual classes. I will never take him again as he responds very sarcastically and agressive towards anyone.
Worst professor ever. Really mean.
Professor is not even present in any way shape or form through any communication very difficult to get a hold of so u better not turn in any late assignments.
Only had 2 assignments in the whole semester, it's relatively easy except for the fact that you cannot communicate with him, he's really messy and doesn't even explain the assignments it just be like "you have an exam" or "write an essay" and gets mad when we 'pester' him with emails so we know what he wants, terrible guy, should retire
Horrible professor! Doesnt want to help you. He only gave us two assignments to do that he assigned at the end of the semester. He wont let us turn in anything late. No extra credit. Laziest teacher on the planet. The class was supposed to be in person but he never wanted to leave his house so we had it online. And hes so rude. Wants you to fail
The class was supposed to be in person, but never actually had an in-person class. His online lectures were useless and never learned anything from them. Never responds to emails, and has his office hours up, but he never showed up to any of them. Just take another class.
This class was supposed to be in person but he just did zoom meetings. It says the book is mandatory (his book) we had about 3 assignments the whole semester, 2 concert reviews with no rubric or what he wants in it, and one assignment about a video. Had a midterm and final but online. I ended up with an A but this class had me worried for little.
WORST PROFESSOR IN THE WHOLE SCHOOL DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. Class was supposed to be in person, yet he made them only on zoom because his "eye surgery" didn't allow him to. Most boring lectures you'll ever have to sit through in your life. Its almost as if he's speaking to himself over and over again. Don't email him, because he simply won't respond.
Class was supposed to be in person, but he never showed up due to a supposed cornea transplant. He claims to give 30-minute breaks from 11:30 to 12 but he always goes over time, barely leaving you with enough time to go to the bathroom or get something to eat. Only gave 2 concert review assignments and a final.
Horrible Professor. Communication between himself and his students is non existent, he puts little to no effort into his classes. Assigns the assignments 2 weeks before classes ends and gives you literally no rubric on what he wants. Please save your time and sanity and take another class.
super lazy, and his class is easy. he made his class online and canceled our midterm in general, only 3 assignments were given for the entire class and that was 2 concert reviews and a test. none of the above-mentioned were problems for me, it was just his attitude. super rude, super cocky, and super annoying. Spare yourself the headache.
The class was taken over Zoom as he had received a cornea transplant when it was supposed to be in person. There were only 2 assignments that required us to go to 2 performances and then write papers on them and that was given out towards the end of the semester so I was a little worried about my grade cause nothing was posted until the very end.
Extremely awful professor! Lectures seemed unprofessional - as if he was just yapping on the spot. Throughout the whole semester, he only gave three assignments all of which didn't have a rubric. There's no communication between him and his students and the conversations that I have seen via Zoom were rude on his part. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!
DO NOT. I SAY DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This class is a waste of time. The professor gives attitude to students, cancels almost all classes at the last minute, gives confusing instructions about assignments, and rambles in lectures that barely make sense. The only good thing was that the only 3 assignments he gave were online.
Absolutely Horrid Professor, just yaps on in his lectures, doesn't gave any sort of rubric as to how he wants each assignment to be done and can't be bothered to grade anything until the last second. Do yourself a favor and don't take him!!
Took in the summer, lazy teacher, easy class. Two jazz concert reviews which you must attend in person and a final which you can take at home (supposed to have a midterm but he cancelled). His lectures wont help since he goes on tangents about his past as a musician. Hard to contact outside of class but lectures are made a attendance grade.
Went to class physically for like the first two weeks then the class was on zoom the entire rest of the semester because of his "health issues". Not a tech class, must take notes in a notebook on what he says in class, hence, his lectures are just him talking for the entire class. Learning the subject was boring, easy A. Wouldn't really recommend.
The class claims to be in-person, it is in fact online. This might serve to your benefit if you enjoy Zoom classes. He can be snappy and rude at times, but he is a passionate Jazz teacher and is aware of the subject intricately. A good class if you like jazz, a bad one if you don't. I don't recommend him as the teacher, but he is the only teacher.
The class was a bit disorganized due to the professor's health issues, but Unstuck AI made studying and staying on top of the assignments much easier. Lectures were hit-or-miss, but the two concert reviews and final were straightforward. Overall, a decent class that was saved by using helpful study tools.
