If you can't get into his class, I recommend at least sitting in to watch. This is probably one of the coolest teachers at Long Beach and probably the coolest teacher I've ever had. Theres never a dull moment in his class and I actually anticipate going just to see what he comes up with that day.

Very funny and weird teacher. Tells us really interesting, funny, queer stories. NEVER fell asleep or lost interest during class. His class is fairly easy if you do all the essays. Always attend class, cuz he gives out "pop" in class essays. HIGHLY recommend everyone to take his class. Haha.

This guy is awesome. He's nuts, but it's funny and interesting. Always something new, never boring, and any opinion is fine in his class. He gives some essays on books you have to read, but the books he assigns are a trip, not boring at all. Highly recommended.

My first college english class, and absolutely the BEST I've ever taken. I wasn't entirely sure I wanted to major in english until I took Guffey's class... The guy's insane, without a doubt, but that's what makes it so much fun-- there's never a dull moment!! You'll learn a lot without ever realizing you did. :) Totally recommended.

The craziest teacher I've ever had! We read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as one of our assignements! He's a great source for interesting books and other controversial political writings. I found myself cracking up everyday I went to this class and I took it at night but didn't miss a single class. That says a lot right there! Highly recomended.

Professor Guffey is THE BEST! He is really funny, cusses a lot, and tells interesting stories to the class. I had his 8am class (I'm not a morning person) and was happy to go. Very easy grader. Once he gave us an in-class assignment to write about our most f***ed up relationship after he told us about his psycho girlfriend. Best teacher ever!

Guffey is hilarious. Don't take anything he says seriously unless he's workshopping a story. This class was so laid-back. All we did was write a couple of in-class papers in the beginning, a one-page flashback, and 2 short stories. This class was really fun and easy. Take Guffey if you enjoy a professor with a sense of humor.

The professor is really funny but I found the amount of reading he expects is a bit much. He's a fair grader on the essays. Allows you to turn in your essays again so you can do better and even let's you choose the topic for the essay.

BEST CLASS EVER! This is the easiest class you will ever take. It's super interesting. I had this class at 8am & I never wanted to skip because it's just that interesting! Homework is easy. There's a lot of easy group quizzes and ALOT of extra credit movies to watch. Half the time spent in class you're off topic talking about conspiracies and stuff

Professor Guffey has been the best English professor I ever had. He is very clear and all his assignments, and help you if you have any questions. He makes a lot of jokes (which I always enjoyed) making lectures more interesting. He grades hard on grammar, and content for outside essays. Review your essay before turning it un. 100% recommend.

He spends 3/4 of the class talking about random stuff. A lot of in class writings. There were like 4 out of class essays. Watched like 4 videos in class. Read the stuff he assigns because you'll be writing about it the next class.

One of the most interesting classes I've ever taken! 3 out of class essays and 1 in class essay, which is basically what your entire grade is based off of. No tests but some group quizzes & in-class one-pagers responding to articlesdocumentaries. Might need some effort but Guffey is a great professor who makes the class fun, take his class!

He's a great professor. Show up to class, participate, give feedback, and work on your stories and you should do great in the class. He is very insightful and clearly a great writer with interesting stories so it was a fun class, especially for someone just taking it as a GE requirement. I bought the books but barely used it. You don't need the rules for writers book, but you MUST read the novel he assigns. His essay prompts aren't too hard. He's really funny and kind of weird. He does allow early submissions for essays so he can give you feedback. So definitely take advantage of that! & GO TO CLASS!

There were a few bad jokes that may have crossed the line for some but that didn't really matter to me because he is really good at his job. Very creative-minded and gifted at writinganything English related. Because he loved the subject, class was very enjoyable. He's a funny guy toosometimes.

He is very, very, very creative, and what I mean by that is very creative! He does tend to go off topic, but he manages to be specific when he is assigning assignments in class or for homework, and if you don't understand what he means all you have to do is simply ask and he will gladly explain himself.

There are only four essays we have to do throughout the year. You only read two-three books throughout the semester and he offers lots of extra credit! Always offers to read student's rough drafts to give feedback!

Guffey is one of the most hilarious people I have ever met, yeah some of his jokes may be taken offensively but you just can't be too sensitive about them because he doesn't mean a word of it. I absolutely loved the class and even as weird and humorous as he is, you can definitely tell that he is also very smart. He makes you want to come to class.

4 essays total. 1 in class essay (midterm). The final is the 4th essay which you do at home. You will do a 1 to 2 page essay every single class. You either will hate him or love it, no in between. Extra Credit! Definitely an easy A. Only buy the first book he assigns or look for a pdf, he won't do any assignments for the rest of the books.

Guffey was such a great prof! He was so random in class but it always made us laugh. A few in class and take home essays on interesting topics but nothing too hard. He gives back great feedback and you can always email him or visit during office hours for help and he'll help. So so so SO many extra credit opportunities so take advantage!!

Professor Guffey can come off as offensive, but just don't take him too seriously. He's also a bit weird but it's actually hilarious if you can understand his jokes. The tangents he went off on were pretty funny. This class is just like any other workshop class. Write a couple of small scenes in the first month, then write two short stories throughout the semester. If you get offended easily or can't take criticism don't take this class, actually just stop beginning a writer then.

Guffey is an amazing English professor. His assignments are really easy, fun and engaging. Homework consists of three essays (4-5 pages long), in class one and a half page essays (front1) and once you are done you are dismissed. He shows films and funny student mistakes that are hilarious but they contribute to the class subject.

He goes off tangent wayyyyyy too much. Besides that, he is a great teacher. Easy and straight forward. Tons of extra credit so do them if you suck at writing. Simply amazing.

This guy goes off topic sometimes buts it's amusing & hilarious. Class ended 20-40 min. early all the timetoo. I'm sure I would've an A in this class since I always had check pluses & A-B's on all my essays. It's the 15% participation; meaning you gotta be one of those kids in the class that adds onto his jokes. But as a writer, his feedback helps.

Willing to help you make your writing better, gives great feedback on everyone's stories. Grade is based on two stories of at least 1000 words and one revision. Lots of extra credit opportunities.

No need to buy the book from Krishna. I bought it and didn't even use it. He assigns a few reading from it, but we NEVER discussed them in class. Save yourself the money. Had Professor Goofy for English 404. He is not only funny, but his overall eccentric vitality is engaging and keeps you engaged. Made me excited to come to class and workshop my stories. The textbook is not critical but, if you want to be a serious writer I would recommend them. Overall, inspirational, unforgettable, and insightful.

Guffeys class is never boring. If you want to take a fun class thats an easy A as long as you do your assignments and show up, this class is for you. Hes hilarious and very smart. If youre sensitive and get offended easily, I guess dont take his class.

Nice and usually funny guy, and gives great honest feedback on your writing. However, his class was run very inefficiently. We workshopped one story per class because he would derail the conversation and go off topic. He also assigned hundreds of pages of readings that were never discussed. Fun class, but if you're a serious writer, look elsewhere.

This class is simple and will by far be your easiest class of the semester. No homework other than two 5 page essays. He tells you to buy a textbook, but we never used it, so save yourself the money and dont buy it. Class time goes by fast and he often gives good feedback on essays. Attendance is mandatory, but this class is easy. Hes funny also

Professor Guffey is one of the most kind professors. The only downside is there isn't a spelled out class schedule on the syllabus so if you skip class you'll have no idea what you're missing that day; so make friends! But if you miss he is also VERY understanding and it never impacted my grade. Super easy GE class don't be lazy.

Robert was super chill he always tells you that theres a quiz but makes it group and tells you that its not open book but everyone still uses their books and phones. Overall hes a great professor and makes the class as easy as possible

We wrote a few essays but overall it was really easy and fun. You dont need the textbook. It helps if you want a career in writing though. You can read examples. He doesnt do quizzes or tests. Its all based on your essays.

He's a really nice professor and his class is simply about reading each other's stories. No tests. You are able to be very creative with your writing and you just have to write about a page to two pages every week (but it's super easy) all writings are based on you're own experiences, you never need to do any research. Good class and good professor

He's not bad. We were assigned 29 journal assignments (1 page long about interesting, short readings), all do at the end of the semester. 4 major papers, easy topics (about your childhood). Easy class, just don't wait last minute. The only bad thing I'd say is reading your essay but that's not that bad since everyone does it (no camera needed)

The syllabus is a lot scarier than the actual terms of the class. Tests were taken in groups, essays were all interesting topics (most were personal narratives). He gives actual feedback to pieces and allows rewrites. He also offers SO MUCH extra credit. He's funny and laid back, just don't get too lazy. Turning things in late isn't drastic either!

omg what a vibe He's so chill and gives criticism so nicely is it even criticism? If you're planning to be a writer, take his course. He's really lax and will grade you based on effort, not skill.

I don't have my grade yet, but I wanted to post before I forget when I graduate. I find Guffey to be a strange teacher who is hands off/hard to communicate with through email, but when it comes to workshops, he does a great job of being helpful and creating a chill and honest environment. As long as you participate in those you'll be fine.

Professor Guffey was an interesting professor. His lectures and instructions were clear, but he often goes off on tangents leaving you wondering how he got to where he went; that being said, it was highly entertaining, albeit strange. Group quizzes were open book and 4 main essays to write. He did not put grades in until the end of the semester.

Guffey's class was a ton of fun and super easy. Majority of assignments are in class and are group work and open note. We get out in less than 45 minutes most days.

I love this guy! He is the silliest professor ever like genuinely a character. Overall it is a pretty easy class, we write quite a lot but it's never over a page 1/2 and never takes longer than 20 minutes. We don't really learn much so if you're looking to improve in your writing I would suggest a different class. And he owns cute little backpacks!

Easygoing professor! He likes to tell some funny stories and is entertaining to talk to. Simple in-class group quizzes and writing assignments and you can leave class when finished with the assignment! Papers are straightforward and he returns work very quickly. A little bit disorganized, but overall a decent professor--Didn't struggle at all. The only downside was printing A LOT of papers. A copy of your story (2000+ words, two stories) for every person in the class. Despite this, I truly enjoyed the class.

Very easy class if you're comfortable reading out loud, and talking in front of the whole class. Class only consist of two narrative/expository essays, journal entries, and a revised essay. There are readings the professors assigns, but they aren't mandatory. Participation and attendance is required, it's important. Easy A if you participate.

Genuinely loved taking this course! You have to write two stories; both have to be at least 1,000 words and you have to read them aloud to the class. Important to note that when other people are reading their stories, you have to write down critiques and read them allowed as well. This professor is a funny guy as well!!

Very funny. Attendance isn't "mandatory" but you'll miss a lot if you don't go. There are quizzes or essays almost every class but you take quizzes as a group. Gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Only thing is you don't really know what your grade is in the class. Grades off a check, check plus, or check minus. Big 4 essays are letter grades.

This class was relatively easy; your grade is based on 2 narratives/stories, journal entries, and a revised narrative/story. Prepare to read your 2 narratives aloud for the class. Other than that, all the lectures are just listening and providing feedback on your classmates' narratives.

Super relaxed- read 2 books one of which was a graphic novel. Wrote 4 essays - 2 out of class and 2 in class- and you will do good if you care about the material at all. His grading criteria was extremely vague, but if you put the work in it will probably be an A. He also offered tons of extra credit. He was hilarious and I would take him again!
