The best and most intelligent professor but be prepared to work.
Love Robbies voice, hilarious lots of extra credit too
love him, and his attire!

This professor is brilliant. His tests are killers, but they are fair, and you only need to study your class notes. His sarcasm and wealth of knowledge add a lot to the class. Definitely take this class!!!
A good professor, but his tests are hard. if you take this professor, try not to sit at the front of the class otherwise you have to dodge his spit which travels at 80miles/hr at all directions

best professor Hofstra has! You will learn so much from him!
I LOVE THIS GUY!!!!!!!!! HE IS THE BEST PROF. THAT HOFSTRA HAS. HE IS UNBELIEVABLY SMART AND HIS TESTS ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, BUT YOU LEARN SOO MUCH!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM, AS DOES EVERY STUDENT THAT HAS TAKEN HIS CLASS =)
great teach...take him ...
Very good teacher. I actually learned economics.
best eco prof, hands down teached you everything you need to know, hard tests, but the class is def. worth taking. Has a great sense of sarcasm. need to go to class to learn
He is amazingly smart! Don't take him if you want an easy class and looking not to learn anything. There should be more professors like him. I am taking my third class with him and wish I could take more!
very smart & passionate, aproachable & fair.attendance is a must but lectures are interesting because of his insight and his humor.offers extra credit throughout the semester and an optional term paper to take the place of a midterm.
This guy is awesome. Take this class if you want to learn economics. This teacher is a must if you are a finance or eco major because of how much he knows and will teach you. not an easy A but worth it.
This guy is a combo of Arnold Schwartznagger and Robin Williams. He is very passionate, he will get you into thinking about economics. You'll actaully come out of his class feeling smart. Worth your money spent on this class
You have to study but easily one of the best teachers Ive had. You will actually learn something in this class.
BEST PROFESSOR AT HOFSTRA HANDS DOWN! Tough class, have to work, but you will learn a lot. Good notes, great lectures, very passionate when speaking his mind. Will make you interested in world affairs. Take him.
The man is a genious. He is hilarious and loves to talk about cheese, hates the LIRR, and is always spitting because he gets excited when he teaches. He'll also come in jet-lagged from trips to Paris which makes him even funnier. If you leave Hofstra without taking him you are an idiot.
By far one of the best professors at Hofstra. Its a hard class, but you will learn a lot of applicable things to the real world. Keeps class interesting because he is a very funny guy. Bottom line take this course with this professor.
Love this man. he's a genius, very passionate about his subject, wish i had more classes with him. truly inspiring and challenging. I learnt so much and went into class not at all interested in eco. WOW. what a diff. full of amazing tidbits and real life knowledge. anti TV and loves his cigars!
One of the smartest people I've ever met. Funny, too. The class is hard, but if you pay attention and think about the subject, then you'll do well. Take this professor, he's one of Hofstra's best.
Class was impossible! His tests are by far the hardest tests I have ever taken here at Hofstra. I would study for days straight and never pull above a D! He also goes pretty fast in class, so while trying to take notes on one topic he's already on another topic. Final exam was on 20 chapters! There is no written work, but tests are IMPOSSIBLE!
STAY AWAY! he goes way too fast from one topic to another, expect us that we experts. talks too fast and gets excited can't take notes. lots of extra credit because he knows everyone struggles. exams are in impossible.
Class is so interesting but he goes SO fast because he's so frikken smart and passionate about it, you can't take notes. Tests are almost impossible, but the class is interesting and he's a great professor. You will learn a lot from him and he makes you think, but the class overall is hard.
If you leave Hofstra without takiing this mans class you are a fool... He is the best professor I have ever had. I'm only sad that i'm transferring and won't be able to take another one of his classes. He doesn't give alot of work but he expects you to absorb the information that he gives you in the lectures. All i studied from where my notes for t
He Is The Best, He Moves Quickly But Not To Quick. You Need To Be At Every Lecture, If You Miss One, Your Out Of Luck. Your Notes Must Be Good Too. You Need To Be Smart Enough To Care In Order To Get A Good Grade.
NOT an easy class what-so-ever. I worked my ass off. Take extremely careful notes, and review what you learned in class everyday, this will make it easier hopefully. Although it was a hard class, I learned a ton because I worked so hard to understand the information
It's not that he expects us to be experts. He expects us to be responsible students and excels in prepping us to be up to par with the rest of the world. A lot of information to digest, exams are hard, but I promise you will learn the most in this class. Take it if you're truly interested in expanding your intellect.
I am one of Professor Guttmann's students from long ago (so long ago that I am now a professor myself). I must say that this man is the best. If I have 1/4 of the impact on my students that Prof. Guttmann had on me, I would consider myself successful. Take this man-work hard-and you will carry the lessons that he teaches with you for years.
He's extremely passionate about what he teaches. He loves it when questions are asked; he wants the students to let him know when they don't understand something. There is alot of information to cover but he doesn't speed through it all; he takes him time with each area (sometimes running over the end of class but it's worth it). Overall he's great
Dr. Guttmann's capability to clarify complex topics in economics amazes me even after having graduated 6 years ago. There are few teachers that I can say have conveyed ideas that I am still able to use in my career. Take his class if you are interested in getting an education. If you are not, do not waste your time.
This is the best professor you will ever encounter. I learned more in his one class than in an entire semester of courses. If you have the opportunity to take a Guttmann class do it. His exams put you to the test, and make ever other test look easy. Bring two pens to class.
Dr. Guttmann is by far the best professor I have ever encountered at Hofstra. His lectures are engaging and interesting, with room for relevant (and some irrelevant) tangents. Tests are difficult and graded competitively so your grade depends on how well everyone else did. If you leave Hofstra without taking one of his classes you have missed out
This guy is the best professor I ever had in my college career. If you're looking for easy grade, dont take him, if you really want to learn, take him because he's the greatest professor Hofstra has. He knows his stuff very well and very passionate. He's one of the 150 Economy Professors in the world that have been invited by European Union.
He's the number one professor at Hofstra. And his advice on future endeavors are great. Take him because whatever you learn you can take a long way.
Dr. Guttman is probably the hardest professor at hofstra. He has a strange way of academically kicking your ass so hard that you like it. One of the most intimidating but impressive people I have ever met. Will be entering retirement in Spring 09
I noticed that Robby hasn't had a comment in some time, thus i figured I would attempt to pursuade as many people as possible to take his class.I have had eco 125,142,115,etc. with him.He uses every minute of class but u never want him to stop. His lessons will impact u whether you enjoy econ or not. Take his class seriously and u will benefit.
I hated eco 1 so I was dreading taking this class BUT I LOVED IT. Guttmann is so brilliant and captivating and really cares for all his students. He's AMAZING. Definitely take him. I worked hard and got an A-.
This guy will somehow kick your butt with material every class, but he somehow makes you want to learn. show up every time or you will drown. take him and learn a whole lot. great guy, very very very smart
He's the best teacher at Hofstra; what more can be said?
a god among mortals. this man inspired me to become an economist. his class isn't hard- it's a test of your own will. his brilliance and sheer passion for what he does will make you appreciate everything he teaches you (which goes far beyond ECO). you will leave his class more enlightened than you would have thought any man could have made possible
One of the most influential persons in my life. Just from his classes. Captivating lectures. He'll give you new ways of thinking about the world. Come to class, pay attention. Write everything. Exams are based on his lectures and there are no powerpoints, just stories.
One of my favorite professors at Hofstra. Eco 142 covers a large amount of material but if you can take good notes (and ALWAYS read and outline the book chapters before tests)you should get an A. Tests are not impossible, you just need to study. Extremely influencial and brilliant man. Has great stories. I looked forward to all his classes
I just got a C- in Guttmann's class. You know what I think of him? The man is a genius. I've never met another person who is so able to immediately command respect and attention in a classroom setting. If you are wrong, he will tell you, but he will also tell you WHY, and that is a huge help in making sure his students actually correcting their mis
If one day God's existence is proven to be unsubstantiated, this man would be next in line. Robert Guttmann is EPIC. I can't even begin to explain how much I've learned in this class, and how vital it is for my future. I don't care what your major is...take him. International economics is a way of life.
Simple...he is the best professor you will encounter at Hofstra. The world will be your classroom,he will make you fall in love with economics and draw you to care about the world around you.The class will require a lot of work, but your intelligence will go up a notch higher and you will value your education.Take him to learn!Guttman you are amazing
You want an education? Take him. Want an easy A? Don't.
Amazing By far the best professor at hofstra! truely an inspiration... he is always willing to help.. you jus have to ask for it.. If you work hard ur guranteed a good grade.. class participation is important.. because the material is difficult, but DR. Guttmann, makes it easy to comprehend.. AMAZING truely amazing!!!
One of the best professors I've ever taken. He will capture your attention immediately and makes the material in class interesting and relevant to what is going on in the world today. Not an easy A by any means but I promise u will leave that class more informed and a new found interest in Economics.
Very interesting! However, to due well the class is very time consuming and the tests are extremely hard!!
This man is absolutely brilliant. He is probably the most effective teacher I've ever had, and he has really sparked my interest in the course. His class requires work, but the knowledge you get from the class is very useful. He is a very good lecturer and incredibly knowledgeable overall.
This is my first time taking Professor Guttman and i have only had a few classes with him so far but I've already learned more in his class than i have in any other economics class. He is an amazing teacher and brings real world problems into the class. While you must work for this class, you will learn more in here than you will in any other class
With his level of knowledge, Guttmann could be considered the father of economics. That knowledge allows him to relate the information to real-life situations, which keeps class very interesting. While his exams may seem hard he gives countless amounts of extra credit points, which overcomes the exams. I got an A, just by doing lots of extra credit
HONESTLY, HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! HE MADE WAKING UP EARLY WORTH IT, VERY INTERESTING GUY, CLASS IS ENTERTAINING, AND YOU LEARN ALOT!! TESTS ARE HARD BUT IF YOU STUDY HARD, YOU SHOULD DO WELL. GUTTMAN IS THE NEW FATHER OF ECONOMICS!!!
Phenomenal. Guttmann is arguably the best professor at Hofstra. Lectures are wonderful, moderately paced, informative outside of economics as Guttmann will give you life lessons, and can be funny. He knows the material inside and out and has lived this course. I can not recommend strongly enough. Difficult class, but a mustake professor
Professor Guttmann is hands down the best teacher I have ever had. After taking him for three courses he has opened my eyes up to the learning process and overall views of life. He is definitely worth taking, he will change your academic career and point of view for the better. I highly recommend taking him if you are willing to put in the effort.
I graduated in 2010 and Guttman came up in a conversation with my girlfriend last night when she asked about my favorite professors. This guy is a game changer. Tests are ridiculous, material is hard, and he makes you work to earn your grade. Teaches you the material and he teaches you how to think. This guy changed my track in life
i've only had 1 class with him and it gets interesting. he likes to yell to make sure everyone is paying attention. get ready to use the online textbk and do online HW. IF YOU DONT LIKE READING AVOID. tests are brutal even if you pay attention. must take copious notes. test scores do not reflect what i've learned from this man & that's unfortunate
always been bad at eco but he's a really great professor. always open for questions, SO MUCH extra credit opportunity, can write a paper to replace midterm grade if it was that bad. he's a sweetheart, but really pays attention to who is taking notes and going to class and raising their hand (even if you're wrong) so do that and you'll be his fave
Awesome teacher, do some reading and you should be ok, huge on extra credit.
I had taken several Economics class with Prof. Guttmann while I was at Hofstra, and I recommend everybody here do the same. After every class I knew substantially more about the world than I had an hour earlier. To this day, I still go back to reread my notebooks to pick up on both life advice and equally relevant facts about current events.
I had Dr. Guttmann last semester and he is hands-down the best economics professor. He's extremely knowledgable and keeps students engaged during his lectures. His tests are difficult, but he doesn't include anything that he doesn't go over during class. He tries to make sure no students are left confused. There are plant of XC opportunities too.
He seems to be a good guy and he is passionate about the topic but he jumps around so much in lectures and gets so off-topic that it's basically impossible to take good notes. His tests are really hard and encompass things he didn't really go over in class, so you have to read the textbook.
Participation is CRUCIAL to your grade. Prof. Guttmann is really passionate about his work. There's a midterm and a final. Weekly aplia and DB is mandatory. As long as you do your work and take good notes you will be fine. I barley studied and never read the txt book. Type your class notes for DB and do extra credit when he offers it!
Really nice guy and passionate about what he teaches. three helpful hints: 1) get DB entries done early don't wait until the last minute (trust me i had to learn the hard way) 2) take lots of notes trust me they help and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need 3) take advantage of the extra credit it honestly really does help
This guy blew my mind. The class was extremely difficult for me, so I had to work really hard for a C+, but he loves economics and if you go to his office hours then you're definitely on his good side and get more XC opportunities. He tells the craziest stories in between lectures, how he speaks 7 languages, was in a refugee camp, etc. Very wild.
Prof. Guttman was great and I certainly would take him again given the opportunity. I wasn't looking forward to economics one bit before this class but once Prof. Guttman walked me through it I fell in love with the subject. The class isn't too bad if you show up, participate, and do the work. He offers plenty of extra credit and second chances.
Dr. Guttmann is an extremely intelligent man. His lectures are both knowledgeable and interesting. He is one of the few instructors who truly lecture in the biology department. His tests are really hard though. All short answer and fill in the blank. Do know how to spell his full name it will probably pop up as extra credit on the test.
He is the best professor in Hofstra, he is brilliant he should be in Harvard. He will capture your attention immediately & makes the material in class interesting & relevant to what is going on in the world today. It's A hard class but he makes you want to come to class & learn. I learned more in his one class than in an entire semester of courses.
Definitely one of the more challenging courses I've taken here at Hof. But Guttmann is truly a genius in his field and you will learn more about the world and how the economy works in just one hour of his class, you should absolutely take him, esp. for International Econ. He is the best professor at Hofstra.
Its an online class so u are on ur own. Textbook is a must and u have to teach urself by reading it. The material is hard to learn on ur own. Weekly homework assignments are hard and discussion board is a lot to do at the last day since u need to write an essay for full credit. But in class review classes make ur mind blown. Dont take eco online
Guttmann is a great economics professor that has been teaching for 42 years. He is caring of his students and gives online assignments weekly. Midterm, final, discussion board, and participation are grades. Makes you work for it but teaches a lot and I would definitely take him again. Take this professor because it makes you appreciate economics.
Professor Guttmann is very knowledgeable, he will ask you to understand and explain all the materials to him. The lecture is amazing, you will learn a lot. Take him! The exam is a little bit hard and homework will ask you to write a lot (discussion board), but if you write more than he expects, you will get extra credit (will boost from B to A-).
Great professor and amazing lecture! You can really learn something from his class! Extra credits are very helpful which will boost your final grade a lot.
VERY knowledgeable economist. If you dont understand something speak up because hell clarify. Exams are difficult but only because theres a lot of content covered for only a midterm and a final. You will definitely learn a lot. Also his discussion board entries can definitely boost your grade but dont procrastinate them.
Fantastic professor. His lectures are very interesting, and he explains economic concepts in a easy to understand manner. Homework and exams can be challenging, but he is very accessible outside class, and is always willing to help students. My only gripe is the terrible third party website he uses for HW/txtbook. Apart from that great class!
Great professor! 100% recommended! I learn a lot during this class. Do the discussion board assignment early, and try to write more. The extra credit will boost your grade a lot (even from B to A).
A literal genius. You will learn a lot in this class. You will also spend a lot of time reading and doing graded work. Homeworks can be difficult, but if you understand them you can do relatively well on the tests. VERY LONG TESTS. Multiple parts with short answer, graphs, essays, and MC questions. Good guy, and very inspiring. But be ready to work
Dr. Guttmann is an amazing professor, hes tough but fair and is intensely passionate about economics and makes the sometimes dismal science truly fascinating He inspired me to pursue my masters in Econ.i learned more in a semester from this man than I did my entire 4 years at hof. Highly recommend, as tough as it may be you will learn a lot.
Professor Guttmann is by far the best professor I've had. He used to be the chair of the department and is so passionate about economics. He doesn't write on the board often so make sure you're ready to take a lot of notes. Make sure you meet with him before the test about the essay questions because he helps a lot! You have to work for your grade!
(taken spring 2020) Love this man! Super intelligent and explains things clearly. Makes economics interesting. Cengage works great with this class. Self proclaimed "hardest Eco Prof" but if you just do the work it's fine. Really want to take him again when I can! Grade based on Cengage HW, tests, and participation. Definitely do the extra credit
He really knows his stuff. He doesn't just teach the material but he helps you understand things about the economy that you will carry into your adult life. Just make sure you READ THE BOOK before class or you will be completely lost. He gives a week to complete each homework assignment which is more than enough. Tests aren't too bad if you study.
This professor is a nice man but he needs to change his teaching method. All he does is make you read the textbook and then he talks about it in class. He doesn't give any other notes, he just talks and talks and talks and sometimes its hard to figure out if he's talking about the actual material or going off topic.
Kind, funny, passionate, and engaging, Dr. Guttmann is a great professor who will open your mind to the world of economics. Lecture heavy class, but he is fair-minded and insightful. Definitely see him at least once before the final, his advice is amazing.
This professor rants all class long. He talks about many different topics and goes off on tangents. He barely writes anything on the board and expects you to thoroughly understand the material before coming to class. The tests were a mix of multiple choice and written response. In order to do well in this class read the textbook multiple times.
Professor Guttmann truly wants you to know what he is teaching, and he will make sure by the end of the semester you understand. I came in with no background knowledge and left so interested in the topics. I took him for HUHC Spring Social Science. He has helped me understand capitalism and so much more.
I had Dr. Guttmann for C&E, where our focus was on the sustainability of capitalism. He was the best choice for this specific semester. He knows a lot about the subject matter, and it was a joy to learn from him. He encourages questions and participation and factors that into your grade. He expects a lot from you but is very helpful. Recommended.
I genuinely enjoyed taking economics with Guttmann. Definitely a teacher that assigns a good amount of homework and the tests are difficult. Paying attention in class will help you a TON on exams. He's very understanding and is kind to those who put in effort. Keep on top of your work and participate in class (top 10ish students get As on tests).
Professor with a high level of experience. If you really want to learn about economics, this is the man but you need to work hard to get an A. Otherwise, drop this class and take a music class.
He is very articulate and obviously knows what he is talking about. The problem is that he only lectures all class and then expects you to know everything about the financial system. The class is very difficult and I have never taken an exam with so much writing in such a short period of time, it is literally impossible to finish the exams.
It's Econ, it's very hard, you know that. Guttmann is extremely knowledgeable, knows what he's talking about, has a lot of experience. His tests are hard and extremely long. Homeworks are really difficult and time-consuming. Discussion Board entries are a good way to gain points for the class. He wants you to succeed. You'll have to work for it.
ECO is going to be hard no matter who is teaching it to you, it is not an easy class. However, you will do well in his class if you read the textbook and take notes during his lectures. Guttmann is VERY knowledgable in his craft. Go to office hours and reach out to him - he helps you out a ton!!! Guttmann is also just a really cool guy. Loved him.
Outstanding Professor. Knows finance like the back of his hand. Listens to you, makes sure you get the material. Lectures are engaging and include real world topics. It's a difficult class. Weekly homework, 10 discussion posts, participation, and 2 exams with LOTS of writing make your grade. Don't screw around and you'll do fine. TAKE HIM!!!
He is very intelligent. He does not even use PowerPoints. But his lectures can be uninspiring at times. Make sure to do the MindTap HW, it helps you understand the content. Exams require a lot of writing. Overall, decent professor, but economics in general is challenging. Very smart man who wants to help though. Nice guy.
Rambles every class. It is hard to tell if what he is rambling about will be on an exam or not. Whines about how he is scared of Trump every class to the point where I get headaches listening to it. Grading is based on how good your answer is compared to others, so if you answer correct but its not as detailed as another's, you get less points.
Honestly he is a great lecturer and he is very interesting. I will say for how hard this class is offering no real guidance such as study guides or homework help that prepares you for tests make this course extremely hard. You will learn a lot but you will have to put a lot and I mean a lot of work outside of class even for just a B or C
Be sure to attend classes and pay attention to the lectures, which shouldn't be too hard as he finds ways to keep students engaged. Any graphs he provides, demonstrating mastery in being able to understand them can give you points on exams. Exams have a lot of definitions and explanations and are curved. Great guy. Best Professor I've had.
He is a good professor who definitely knows what he's talking about but unless your passionate about econ the class is pretty difficult to follow. You got to pay really close attention to his lecture and mindtap in order to do well.
Has absolutely no clear grading policy. Based on only how others do on the exam it can affect you too. For Econ 101 he's way to political and goes of tangents all the time. Rude but funny sometimes. Tough Grader. I would avoid. Don't have an idea why he has this many 5 star ratings.
Definitely avoid this professor at all costs. His grading is very hard and only one student in the class can get a 100 on his exams, because he uses the best answers as the answer key for his exams. His lectures were long and grueling and he made you feel stupid when you got a questions wrong. No help through canvas either.
THE TRUTH:Extremely down to earth. He makes the exams seem hard but if you study and actually do the discussion posts, the material will stay in your head. Offered a ton of extra credit. Encourages participation and sometimes curses like a sailor.Really does want his students to understand the material for their future benefit rather than academics
Amazing professor! As difficult as economics can be, he dumbs it down in a way that makes it easy to understand. He actually wants you to learn the material, not just worry about what grade you get in the class. He's open for office hours, offers extra credit opportunities, and is willing to help as long as you work hard and show that you care.
