Robert was a grad student and a little too smart to know what was good for his class. He ALWAYS does the proofs for all of the problems so you end up writing down way more than you need to and just getting confused for what you actually need to know. Plus the tests are super hard, way worse than the practice problems. Just read the book.
Great as a T.A. Especially if you have Prof. Rejto. Cares a lot about math. However, has the ability to make you feel insignificant when attempting to understanding the subject. Goes through items step by step if you ask, but is sometimes annoying when he goes through a problem that you know the process and you just want the answer. Nerdy cute.
Robbie was the best TA I have ever had. He really cares about his students understanding. You can tell he is EXTREMELY intelligent but is able to explain difficult math topics with simplicity. I hated mat before this class and Robbie was a huge part of my success.
Prof. hank is a shy guy going to lectures will help you as well as attending discussion. Lots of homework decent amount of tests. Nearly all of the tests including the final ended up being curved generously I failed the final and ended with a B+ in the class. mr Hank is especially helpful during office hours would recomend going to those strongly
Hank is super nice and goes through all the material very clearly. If I had a question mid-lecture he would always answer it without me even having to ask because he comes at the concepts from all angles. The end of the class went a little fast, but as long as you keep up with the hw problems you'll do fine on the tests. Great teacher!
Loved to help out and sit down with students during class time (this class was a flipped classroom) and work through problems until student understood. I had a hard time at first getting used to online lectures and didn't understand everything at first, Robbie sat down and explained everything and didn't make me feel stupid
Thank goodness that I still remembered most of Pre-Calc from High School. If you didn't take pre-calc in high school don't get this teacher, all the other students in my class were getting C's . We literally didn't do anything useful in class since this was a flipped classroom so most of it was on you outside of class. Only pro is its so laid back
Math 1151 with this professor is extremely easy. Basically a repeat of high school pre-calculus. If you are not good at the basics of pre-calc, do not take this class because it is pretty fast paced so if you get behind this class will be very difficult for you. No textbook, but quizzes every Monday.
I had never taken a pre-calc class in high school, and I jumped right into 1151 with Robbie. If you keep up with the online lectures and come to class prepared, this class will be extremely easy for you. Robbie and his TAs are very helpful with questions. Be aware that you may be required to do "extra" work if you want to get an A, though.
1151 was an hybrid classroom and my first one of the type - the online site glitches a lot but he was very helpful and will give you credit if you email him about whatever happened on the site. The in class lectures are helpful but you can skip them because the videos on youtube are much shorter and to the point. overall good class.
Robbie is amazing, if people has questions, he is not afraid to make sure the students understand. The course was a hybrid course which I thought was easier because I would come to class prepared and knew the material. The other thing I really enjoyed was how we were able to retake quizzes until you pass them. This makes it easy to get atleast a C.
Im taking 100% online. It is really hard to get help and I feel like Im on my own. Everything about it feels so unorganized and it stresses me out. He seems new to what he is doing. I started off weak but will finish strong. Hoping there is a curve!
I'm taking the class online. If you do too, plan to self study literally everything. We're given chapters from the 2 textbooks (which he mostly DOESN'T test on, so it's hard to know what parts of the book to study), and a playlist of Youtube videos every week. He's slow to post study guides, same w/ communication. I like math, but this class sucks.
To any of you thinking of taking MATH 1151 online, DON'T DO IT. It sucks. The homework website has been broken for over 24 hours(and hw is due), Prof. Hank hasn't posted the final exam study guide (which most people are taking this week), and has been unresponsive to all emails and messages so far. My classmates and I are really frustrated. Ugh.
DO NOT TAKE THE ONLINE SECTION! I thought this would be an easy way to take Pre-Calc since I took it in high school but if anything it was more confusing, hes hard to contact, his moodle is messy, and he rarely gives any feedback. It is finals week and a study guide still hasn't been posted and our homework program was down for three days.
Robbie is a quirky nice guy who really enjoys math. I talked to him outside of class and he's a big gamer and poker player. His style of teaching is awkward but he does want you to succeed. Posts notes online, HW is not required but quizzes are based off them. Polls student on which midterm review questions to go over and 1-1 sessions hes awesome.
Love Robbie! I had taken Calc I previous semster with a different prof and had to drop. Robbie is great, the lectures help the information make sense, and he's very willing to help students!
I was extremely intimidated going into this class since I'm bad at math. However, Professor Hank is very clear in his lectures, patient with students, and a good communicator. His exams and quizzes had no surprises, and I genuinely felt that he wanted us to succeed. You'll have to work for a good grade, but it's very doable.
Really great calculus professor! Posted in-lecture notes consistently after class. Robbie was always prepared for class. Explained material clearly as he went. Lectures were easy to take notes from. Approachable in and outside class. Answered questions in a helpful manner. Wears neon colored polos. :) Recommended!
Wants us all to pass! Good dude, would recommend.
Wants everyone to pass and super honest about midterm and final exam content. Best professor I've ever had by far!
Did a great job helping the students succeed
Robbie is the best
He provides review sessions for major exams that are extremely helpful because he goes over things that we ask for in detail. He takes the time to help his students understand the course better and pass the class.
He is the best professor ever!!!!! Highly recommended!
Robbie was the best professor I've had so far. He really works hard to help his students understand the course material. Even hosted a live stream on Twitch the day before the final exam for about 4 hours! For this being the first time he had lectured Calculus II, he did a fantastic job and I highly recommend him to anyone taking calculus classes!!
Great professor! Took his Calculus II class. Clear explanations and wants you to pass the class. Posts relevant practice questions and reviews. Very accessible , approachable and good at answering questions and overall fun to be around.
He did everything he could to help his students succeed. Quizzes and tests are similar to the homework; they could be harder sometimes but not too terrible. Doing homework regularly (not mandatory) definitely helps get 100% on quizzes and an A on tests.
He was a really good professor. Good explanations and was very clear during lecture. Quizzes and midterms were easy during the semester but I personally felt that the final was extremely hard, harder than any of the midterms that we've done. May have a huge dent on my grade. Other than that, he was one of the better calc professors at the U of M
Robbie is a really caring instructor. He explains everything as best as he can and posts gradelines after each exam. Do the homework and make sure you understand it. I would also recommend not missing lecture either.
I can tell upfront Robbie wants us all to succeed. You learn How to solve problems, and also Why these methods work. He gives you specific things that will (or not) be on the exams, and his 4 hours Twitch streaming the day before the final was extremely helpful. A chill and fun person also. Pay attention to e^x problems because he likes them.
I was really not looking forward to calc 2 because everybody says its brutal, Robbie was awesome though and actually made me enjoy this class. Posting guidelines after every midterm was the best. Twitch streaming the day before the final was also awesome.
I came into Calc 2 intimidated but quickly realized that Robbie was a caring professor and that if I put the work in I would do fine. Robbie loves when students go to office hours, and he'll usually drop some hints as to what'll be on the quiz/test if you go. Homework wasn't required, but I did the recommended questions, which helped me.
Calculus 2 is a tough subject, but Professor Hank does a good job teaching the content. He always holds office hours before lecture and has office hours during the day, so it is always easy ask for help. Even though the hw isn't assigned it is good practice for the weekly quizzes and midterms. Lectures and resources are all posted online.
Robbie is a fantastic professor who understands calculus and knows how to teach it effectively. He goes through a ton of examples and keeps proofs brief. There isn't any mandatory homework, but you should do problems in the book frequently to practice course material because the tests are quite difficult.
I didn't learn as much from his lectures as I did from the TA who led my discussion section. Every time I went to ask Robbie a question, I left with more questions than I started with. My favorite part about him was his personality. I thought it was funny that he did his review session on Twitch.
Robbie is the best professor I've ever had. The classes (I've taken 1271 and 1272) were always a little test-heavy, and that was tough for me, but the quizzes provided constant grade feedback. Robbie was always friendly, enthusiastic, and went above and beyond to help students. Accept no substitute - pick Robbie's calc courses.
Boring. Lectures are too fast and TA's do not know what they are doing/ how they are supposed to be graded. The class guidelines are very unclear and you lose points in homework fort the dumbest things.
I didn't find I learned much from his lectures, I had to do a lot of self-teaching and seeking help from others.
Robbie was by far my favorite Professor this semester. I found his lectures to be very engaging and easy to follow. The content can be challenging however the format of weekly quizzes and frequent testing makes it easier to check in with how youre doing. I preferred more frequent testing so there wasnt as much content on each test.
Honestly the best professor I have had. The class was online, but arguably better than it could have been in person. Super responsive to questions, and since it was online, there are office hours available almost 24/7. Easily the best online class I have had, and I do not like math. He makes the material doable and the class great.
Professor Hank is a great teacher and very much cares about his students. I highly recommend taking a class with him! He takes time outside of class and the week to help students who are struggling.
Overall good professor. The lectures were a bit boring but that is to be expected with an online format and he tried his best to make them engaging. During lectures, there were good ways to ask questions. He was often available outside of classtime and organized TA office hours well so help was pretty easy to get. Seemed like a fun and nice guy.
Robbie is far and away one of the best professors I've had. Calc is a hard subject, but he goes out of his way to clarify anything and be sure his students are prepared for quizzes/ exams. Homework is manageable and Robbie + TAs are accessible through Canvas/ email. The review sessions before exams are super helpful! Smart idea to go to them.
MATH1142 is a valuable class, but stay focused! It's easy to ask Q&As during lectures. Office hours are set up very helpfully, so use them. It's harder to "catch up" in this class. As a student you're qualified/ready to be there- however, the course is challenging, so don't procrastinate, or you'll get discouraged. You are capable, best of luck!
Professor hank tried to make the class as engaging as possible. He assigns a lot of homework, and sometimes the Webwork is much harder than what he would go over in lecture. However, if you understand the material, the tests shouldn't be an issue. Go to his office hours! If you're looking for a math class to take, I would recommend Robbie.
We are in weird circumstances right now due to covid-19, causing this class to be all online. I'm not gonna lie I was scared to take an online math class, but Robbie Hank made it as engaging as possible and prefilms his lecture videos in order to answer questions as thoroughly as he can. Definitely recommend if you want to understand the course!
Hank made it a lot less stressful and he really took time to help each person. He always responds to emails. He really works hard to make sure people are ready for tests by providing 3 amazing practice tests for each test we have. He also posts all worksheets answers/ lectures online so that we can use it for review and for HW. 10/10 recommend.
This was my first time taking a math class online but was pleasantly surprised with how the semester turned out. Prof Hank has no problem reexplaining concepts and has asked in several lectures if his teaching pace was too fast. This year he played prerecorded videos for lectures while answering questions in the Q&A in real-time. Def recommend!
I have really enjoyed having Prof Hank. I think he does a really great job teaching the class online. The lectures are pre-recorded videos. He plays them during the zoom lecture while answering questions in the Q & A. He still engages with students at the beginning/ end of class & between videos and seems like he genuinely cares for students.
I understand that Calculus is difficult the way it is, but Robert Hank puts little to no effort in providing understandable material in order to ease the confusion in this level of mathematics. Lectures go extremely fast with little to no explanation, and the homework references strategies and problems found no where in the notes.
Professor Hank clearly puts so much effort into his lectures and it pays off. He is very clear on class expectations and is very accessible outside of class.
Professor Hank is a great professor who is very understanding to the whole COVID scenario. He has two homework assignments a week which may seem like a lot, but if you pay attention, they should be easy. One quiz per week which is basically a test to see if you showed up. 4 midterms, and the lowest gets dropped which is nice. Overall he was great!
he responds to emails very fast
The set-up of this class worked really well and Prof Hank is really helpful outside of class. Lectures were really thorough and midterms don't have any surprises. There are quizzes each week except for test weeks, and 2 HW assignments per week but they are usually easy and you get to drop 3 quizzes and 1 out of the 4 midterms. Definitely recommend!
Robbie is a great professor! He explains the material really well, and he's very accessible outside of class if you don't understand something. Work load is pretty moderate, but you'll get a good grade as long as you put in effort.
Incredible teacher, always willing to help and answered emails any time of day. Great guy and a great teacher
Robbie is a really good professor who cares about his students and wants them to do well in class. The exams were very straightforward with no curveballs thrown in, honestly easier than the practice exams he gives out. The 3 lowest quiz scores get dropped and he drops your lowest exam score which is really nice. Definitely recommend as a professor.
Took MATH 1142 with him fall semester online. Really great professor who records his lectures in advance and plays them over the zoom lecture so he can answer questions while the lecture is going, which is very helpful. A decent amount of homework but nothing too bad, he is a really nice and caring guy.
Highly recommend professor Hank, super accessible both in and out of class and quickly responds to chat in zoom and email. A super nice guy overall and I can tell he likes what he teaches. I was shocked to find out that this was his first time teaching 1142 because all the lectures made perfect sense for someone who has never taken calc before.
Had a great experience with Professor Hank during Math 1142. Lectures were great and always made sense. Usually very easy to follow. The amount of homework was reasonable. Does a great job of answering questions in and out of class.
Lectures are mandatory but they are well organized. You have weekly webwork and gradscope assignment and 4 midterms and a final. In discussion, you usually have a 1-2 question quiz each week super easy. Does a really great review so as long as you go the midterms are not bad. Responds quickly to emails and posts hints on hard homework questions.
Professor Hank gave clear concise lectures. The zoom lectures were mandatory and graded for participation but was an easy way to get more points. The weekly homework assignments were the hardest part of the class for me but they helped me prepare for the tests. The weekly quizzes were easy, he drops 3 of the quizzes and one of the 4 midterms.
Lectures are a bit dry and the homework is ridiculously hard. After the first unit I was unable to do any of the assignments on my own even using my notes. The TA's could not be more unhelpful. Discussions are the biggest waste of time. Practice exams are not good representations of the tests. Robbie is nice but has unrealistic expectations.
His lectures were very heavy at times, but it got to the point. He answers your questions during the lectures, so that was helpful. The webworks and weekly homework can be time-consuming, but he responds back to his emails pretty fast. His exams were short and just like the practice exams. Keep up with the homework and you should get an A.
The lecture problems are easier than the homework but the exams are about the same. Don't rely on the TA for help. Prof is usually really helpful during and after lecture for questions.
Did a good job of actually making online classes work. Lots of other professors put little to no effort into making their online class cohesive but he did a good job. Nice guy.
Robbie did an amazing job teaching this class. Math has always been my most hated class, and he made it enjoyable for me! He cares so much about his students and responds to emails super fast. Homework was definitely challenging, but tolerable if you give yourself a lot of time to do it. I would recommend this class!
Robbie is very kind and teaches using a variety of examples. Since I took this class with COVID we had the option to watch pre-recorded lectures but otherwise, meetings in class would be for polls and further questions. I appreciated the fact that he always made time to answer questions and engage us even if we were all online.
Robbie is a great guy who really wants everyone to succeed. You can see this in his availability outside of the classroom, and willingness to work with each student. He's very understanding about everyone's circumstances. The class isn't the easiest given that it's calc, but he does a good job of presenting the material.
Prof. Hank cares a lot about what he teaches, you can tell he loves math. The class itself was very difficult for me. You get assigned two homework assignments a week that can take at least two hours each, one quiz a week, four midterms, and a very difficult final. I only took it because it was required, if it isn't required for you don't take it.
Super nice professor who always answered questions in a respectful and clear manner. I was terrified of taking calc but I think he was the best instructor I could have asked for. I personally think the homework was reasonable, especially compared to other classes Ive taken. If you have to take math like I did, then take Robbies class.
Prof Hank is super great! He explains things very clearly and always answers questions that students have. His tests were kind of hard but him and the TAs are accessible outside of class. You also have to have good discipline if you take this over Zoom because its hard to catch up if you fall behind. He doesnt do any extra credit or round grades.
Robbie Hank is a great guy and truly wants his students to succeed. Both him and the TA's were all easily accessible outside of class. There were 2 sets of homework due a week, each one taking up to 2 hours so if you want the grade, you def have to work for it. With that being said, the lectures were great and tests were really not too hard.
This guy is literally the nicest person you will meet. Such a genuine person. He makes things very clear, and any questions you have about anything he is more than happy to help. If you can take a class of his, 10/10 recommend. He can explain complicated concepts in a very simple, clear way to help you better understand. He is a 10/10 professor.
Robbie is such a genuine guy and enjoyable to talk to but his class is awful. If youre not good at math/self discipline then this class is HARD. He really focuses on overall concepts and kinda skips over details in his lectures. The tests are very hard and the formatting of the questions aren't similar to the practice tests or the in class problems
Real nice guy but class is way harder than it needs to be. There are so many tests and homework assignments that just take time but don't teach you anything and one quiz a week is a lot and hurts your grade. Hank is also not very accommodating and personally needs more hobbies outside of work as he takes this 1000 level math class too seriously.
Robbie is a great guy. Definitely cares about his students. But he seriously needs to reassess how he tests his students. There are three midterms and one final; they were all exponentially harder than what was taught in class. I understand the point of a test is to test your comprehension, but what was asked on exams was well beyond the course.
Do not take this class if you are not 100% confident in your math skills. Lectures are vague, discussion sections are useless, TA's don't care to help, and exams are what you'd expect from a 2000- or 3000- level math course. If you absolutely have to take a math credit then this is the best option, but be mindful of how you prepare for exams.
Very solid choice. Lectures are clear and quizzes are only on the basics. Midterms get harder as they go on, and the final was a lot more difficult than he had made it seem. I was not super confident in my math skills at all and did well. Lots of practice available and accessible outside of class!
Great teacher. If you study for weekly quizzes and get good grades on them, you'll do good on exams. His grading is very forgiving because you just need the correct process and not the correct answer. Make sure you go to office hours for homework, and use suggested exercises and practice exams to study for quizzes/exams. Pretty good curve too.
Robbie is a great guy, and does care about his students. One thing I would recommend is going to his personal office hours. The class itself is difficult. All he talked about is how the 2nd midterm is historically the worst, be prepared to drop that midterm. Also please go to lecture, it is extremely easy to fall behind and even harder to catch up.
Robbie is a really nice guy and I recommend going to his office hours, he usually goes through the hw with you. I'm not the worst or best at math, so it was a little challenging for me, but just watch his videos and do the practice tests/worksheets. There are quizzes every week, and he drops 2 as well as 3 midterms, and drops your lowest one.
I have never been super good at math, so this class was pretty tough, to the point where I decided to re-take it. For a level 1000 class it is pretty difficult. He teaches some subjects vaguely, but others in depth. There are 3 midterms (lowest dropped), 10 quizzes (1 every week, lowest 3 dropped), and homework every week that is about 17 problems.
Robert is a super nice teacher but the class is very hard. He does a good job of organizing the class and canvas and you can tell he wants you to succeed. His lectures are key to doing well in the class. Overall, the concepts of the class are super hard but Robert is a very helpful teacher.
Robbie is an excellent professor. Math isn't easy, but if you show up, attend lectures, do the homework, and are generally engaged, you'll do fine. What stood out most to me was his kindness, empathy, and his desire to see his students succeed. He is genuinely such a good person. His lectures are also super clear and concepts are well explained.
Robbie is a good guy, but this class is hard. The notes have easy examples, but then the homework and exams are hard problems. There is a really good curve tho, which makes a 60 a C-. Open notes for quiz, closed for exams. He has pre-recorded and zoom lectures which I liked, so if something came up I could do notes ahead of time, or later if needed
