He is really a nice guy and he is super helpful. If you ever have a question he always answers your questions and it seems almost like he enjoys answering a students question, what a novel idea. On top of being a great teacher he is really funny too. Went the modules that he and Dr. Barkley taught and I skipped the rest and I still got an easy A about 2 weeks before the end of the quarter.

Very helpful teacher, obviously passionate about the subject he teaches. Classes are clear, interesting, and very informative. Grading processes are flexible and it's very easy to get the grade you want. Even if I were to get enough points to get an A in the class, I would still go to the lectures... they're that good!

Great teacher, lively and easy to understand, loves to teach. Class is SUPER EASY, I think everyone got an A. You do assignments at you own pace throughout the quarter, so you can be done and stop going to class at least a week before your other finals. Do the assignments quickly and all of them, and you will save yourself weeks!

Class is a survey, so if you know a lot about popular music, you may find some of the presentations simplistic - BUT both Hartwell and Barkley are great professors with a lot of enthusiasm. I especially enjoyed Hartwell - very intelligent and kind. A great combo of traits to learn from! As everyone else says, highly recommended.

Easy, fun class. Almost entirely self paced. Lots of work can be done online, so you wont have to attend the class 100% of the time (I think I didn't even go the last two weeks). He's a good teacher and the class was fun, so I found myself wanting to go to class anyways (+ lots of points given for taking notes).

Extremely good lecturer, very knowledgeable. Very pleasant to students. This class has a super-low-stress grading system, and it meets ethnic studies and arts requirements at UC campuses. So taking this class is a very good idea.

My favorite teacher at foothill. Engaged us in some fun discussions and genuinely cares about his students. The class is fairly easy, as long as you do all the work. There are no exams, tests or textbook, but there are weekly online homework and a couple projects. I recommend this class to EVERYONE. Looked forward to class everyday

(INTRO TO POP CULTURE)This class was probably the best class I've ever taken at Foothill. I've been going there for the about a year and a half now and he was the only teacher that actually got to know the class in a non-awkward environment making it easier for everyone to enjoy talking in class. Not too much homework, no final exam.

First time rating a professor, really the best teacher you can think of, easy but also helpful. Don't require anything but cell phone use, but still majority of students show up both in class and online. That is just his personal charm. You won't regret it if you take his class.

I took media online with Hartwell and Thornton and had a great experience with the course. I was able to learn a lot about media through the readings and enjoyed doing discussions. It took some adapting to the 24 hr apart requirement, but a very easy class and both teachers are very helpful!

Sometimes you meet a talented, down to earth, friendly, all around great guy. Sometimes, he just happens to be the one instructing your class! Great class, great instructor, don't miss it and DON'T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT when you get there! All classes should be taught this way :)

The online class is very well-organized. I took this class for my GE and I didn't expect I would enjoy it and learn something from it. It is an easy class to complete your GE while you can learn something from it. Definitely recommend this class!

Dr. Hartwell is the most awesome teacher I have had the privilege learning from. He's probably the only teacher in my life that has acknowledged me in a good way. He's good at the piano too. I would recommend his class to anyone even if their not too into music, just to hear his humble and humbling insight.

Ahh, he's such a nice teacher! :) He widens your horizons towards music AND life. I strongly recommend you take him for the entire Music 2 series. Heck, I think I might even take Multicultural Music with him. There is no reason why you don't get an A in his class. He offers PLENTY of leeway of how to get an A+ in his class.

This class should be an easy A/A+. I received an A- though because I missed deadlines for several assignments. If you want an easy GE TAKE THIS CLASS AND THIS TEACHER. Don't get an A- like I did though haha.

I took him for intro to pop culture, he was an awesome teacher. There is not much work, but the class was so fun and interesting that it would have felt like a crime to miss a class. I would definitely take another class with Hartwell.

I got a C in this class which is stupid and is the only non A on a report card because I overslept over 3 assignments : This class is EXTREMELY EASY though. TAKE IT TAKE IT TAKE IT. His class is awesome. But the load of assignments will exceed your imagination. Class is held by Hartwell and the one which is terrible, Kay Thornton(responsible for your online work). No matter how you try hard for the online work, it won't be graded properly. 91.5% to get an A, but huge barrier by the tough grader, just impossible to get an A.

Dr. Hartwell is incredibly knowledgeable. Homework is a few online assignments, they take awhile, but definitely not difficult. ALL other points are easy to get as long as you go to class. He is one of the few professors who really gets college students. Take him for an easy A, but also for the experience he provides. He wants you to succeed!

There are other instructors for this class, but he is the best among the rest. The class is extremely easy and the extra credit makes it even easier! Lectures does not contribute much to your grades, but it is entertaining. There is a lot of reading, and if you are street-smart, you can get away with it. Graded assignments are extremely tedious.

Dr. Hartwell is the best teacher I have ever had. I have had him for 4 classes and have one more with him. He really knows the students and really cares about what he teaches. The set up of the class (half in class, half online) is the same for each of his classes in the MUS 2A-C and MUS8 classes. It is organized and easy to get a good grade!

If you need to fulfill your GE classes, this class is the best one to take. It is an extremely easy A. The lectures are actually interesting and Hartwell as well as the other professors are very passionate about music.

Take this class. Seriously. You have to write a paper for the midterm and final, but they are about pop culture so it's actually really interesting. The content we go over is stuff that is relevant to now and relatable. One of the best classes I've taken at Foothill. You'll regret not taking this class with Hartwell.

There is one group project which kind of sucks, but honestly this class was so worth it. We usually would leave early and all we have to do is take notes and do the online homework via the online textbook. Super easy class for the credits and honestly not that much work. There is also like 400 extra credit points!

Hartwell's the man! Very laid back class since it's mainly participation based. The material is pretty chill, being aware of the media and what it means etc. I actually really admire Hartwell because he made the course himself to raise our awareness of how the media affects our lives. "You ignore it at your own risk" :D Hands down to ya Hartwell!

This guy is amazing! He was a really reasonable person and is always there for you when you have questions. He replies your emails extremely quick too, I never had a problem with him. On top of that, he gives you a late submission option. However, attendance is mandatory because you accumulate points for class assignments too. :) Take him!

I absolutely love this guy. He's so kind and funny, especially his self-depreciating jokes. Lectures are clear and concise. The class makes you take notes but he gives minimal things for you to write, just the essential things. I look forward to Tuesdays and Thursdays because of this wonderful professor

Honestly Hartwell is the reason I'm still alive this quarter. I took media 11 popculture with him fall quarter and he's so amazingly honest and hilarious. note that whoever you sit with on the first day is going to be your group for the final project and you will sit with them for the rest of the quarter

Lectures provide decent amount of information on basic music history, a base if we would like to learn more ( supposed to be an GE's class purpose). Classes don't require lot of work but must put effort to pass. I took MUS8, 2B and MEDIA 11.

To get an A+ all you need to do is show up, take notes, and do the homework. To get an A+ you need 4100 points for honors or 3800 if you take just music 8. I had 4700 by the end

Easy and entertaining class. The workload is extremely light and there is a video project. It's done with the group of people you sit with the first day, so be warned. You'll get an A as long as you show up to class for participation and do your homework on time.

This is actually my 1st time ever rating a professor & Mr. Hartwell is just so amazing that I had to do it. He is a very sweet & respectful man, who always makes class fun & interesting! For me, it was a super easy class, considering it's honors status. Easy grader. Just do your work and you'll be flying. He's super friendly and easy to talk to. There is one major group project but it isn't anything to stress over. The most work is just two 500 word paragraphs each week.

This class was great in many ways. Professor Hartwell was very informative on popular culture and made his lectures entertaining with his humor. There was a lot of group work which was hard to do because everyone always had a different schedule. There was also a summary/analysis due pretty much every week, but they were fun to do. Frankly it's well-known among students here that Hartwell's classes are easy-A. He's a very nice guy and I have nothing bad to say about him, but these kind of classes really show the idiocy of our education system. It's clear that both professors and the students know these GE classes are only taken for credits. Then why even make these required?

His lectures are so entertaining. i looked forward going to class just to hear him talk. he made the material so engaging and interesting. Super approachable and nice guy as well. the textbook work can be a pain though

Robert Hartwell is a great teacher who obviously cares about all of the students, and makes sure that everyone who does the homework can pass the class. His class is pretty easy because of the extra credit, but it isn't trivial (you still have to do the online homework, and if you're in the Honors class there's a required group project.)

Professor Hartwell is honestly one of the best, if not the absolute best, professors I've ever had. He makes every lesson so engaging and so much fun, and cares deeply for everyone; even when the group project got to be shaky, he was nothing but supportive. Highly recommend for online summer session class. It definitely is not a hard class but you still need to participate and put them thought and care into your assignments. Which isn't very hard, given how the materials he uses are really cool and interesting to read. Would 100% take him again.

Professor Hartwell & Professor Thornton are the best. I definitely recommend taking them for an eye-opening course on popular culture. Their assignments are relatively easy, however they are sometimes time-consuming. They are very accessible and willing to help you at all times! There's one big project within the course, I recommend starting early.

Taught w/ Kay Thornton. Easy A; Small Workload. Details: 5 topics; each includes a group intro discussion (tell what you know), 2-3 readings provided by prof (no textbook), a quiz on reading, & 1 concluding discussion (share what you learned). 1 major project that is not too challenging. Ample opportunity to redo work; extra credit offered.

ATTENTION HERE!!!! This class is way easier than it looks, don't let all that text fool you into thinking this class is a lot of work (it isn't). It says there are lectures monday/wednesday for 2 hours, NO! it's actually only on Wednesday for around 30-40 minutes, so it really isn't that bad. Each week consist of 1-2 assignment, really easy A+ !!!

He was a great professor overall and his lectures were very interesting but also kept them short. If you go to the lectures, and do the textbook work and do the discussion posts, you'll be fine and receive a passing grade. The easiest class I took this quarter.

Funny, knowledgable and incredibly engaging. Class is pretty easy but you still learn a lot!

You cannot go wrong with this class! Your discussion will be due every Sunday night. Now and then, you will have a discussion and a reading quiz, but that will be it. Super easy, straightforward class!

The class is easy and fun but a little bit of work. You'll have to answer two prompts most weeks that require 500 words each. It's easy just the work is time-consuming. The final project is hard it may seem like it's easy work but in reality it's pretty tough. The sooner you complete it, the better you'll be. His lectures are the best at Foothill.

All I can say is Professor is AMAZING!!! The lectures are perfect and the Music is on point you get to learn a lot in just one class about the importance of music and composers in our life and history.

I recommend taking him and any course he offers. He is really amazing and never gives out tests/finals. For the lectures all you have to do is participate and write a 75 word summary of what you learned/found interesting. All the work is due on Sunday at 11:30.

This was a super easy and fun class! If you put in the effort, you can definitely get an A. The work took about 2-3 hrs/week and you're pretty much free to write however you want on the topics they give. If you're looking for an easy GE req class, take this course, you won't regret it.

MDIA11 with Hartwell/Thorton is a fairly easy class, but you definitely need to put in the work. Alternates between a 300 word post, 2-3 canvas pages of reading, and a small open-book quiz one week, and a 400 word forum post the following week. Final paper is a 1500 word reflection. Both professors are very accommodating and set you up for success.

MUS2B online with Hartwell was such an enjoyable experience! About 2-4 hours of homework a week but you can learn a whole lot from him. Lectures are optional for the asynchronous class but give extra points if you participate and write a quick summary. Everything is due at 11:30 pm on Sunday so don't wait for Sunday night.

Nice prof. If you need a GE or honor course, then choose his class. Decent amount of work. Media class has no final exam but the music we have a project to do for the final. It is not that bad. Overall, very inspiration, nice and caring prof.

Great prof and person! Hybrid class so lectures were in person and hw is online w/ Kay Thornton. Lectures were interesting & we got plenty of breaks & often got out early. He gets that some don't wish to talk, so he doesn't force participation. No exams, quizzes, or projects in person, but a lot of writing assignments online (300-600 word).

Professor Hartwell is THE most genuine and kind professor I have encountered during my time at both De Anza and Foothill. You may think he assigns a lot of work, but it's because he's trying to get you to genuinely learn about music. There are no exams or final, just weekly assignments, a quiz, and participation during zoom lectures. TAKE HIS CLASS

Dr. Hartwell is definitely my favorite Foothill professor! He is so kind and helpful. He helped me transition into the honors section of the class after I had already been in class a while. He gives incredibly interesting ZOOM sessions, which furthered my understanding of western music! Assignments are really manageable and there is extra credit.

Loved Professor Hartwell. Was such a clear grader and gave thoughtful comments to all my assignments. I wish more professors would be like him. Please take his class!

Dr. Hartwell makes Foothill College shine! He is so kind and caring truly going above and beyond to help his students succeed in every way I have taken 3 classes with him - plan on taking another in the future Weekly discussions and quizzes with optional but you have to attend! :) ZOOM classes I love him so much! You won't regret taking his classes

Such a great professor! He is very understanding and will work with you concerning your grades. I would take his classes again if I could but I recommend this professor to anyone and I really enjoyed taking his class!

Very captivating speaker with great comedic timing (without overdoing it)! You can tell he cares about his students and is fun to talk to in/out of class. Speaking/volunteer participation is not required, but is highly encouraged and his class environment makes it easy to do so. Overall, great professor and person. 10/10

Dr. Hartwell is the best professor at Foothill College! I took most all of his classes MUS 2CH MUS 2AH MUS 8 MDIA 11. Wonderful experiences! So many ways to do well. He is always very kind and accessible Gives GREAT feedback Grades are on point totals and there's lots of extra credit. Suggest going to his Zoom lectures! They are the greatest! :)

He is one of the best professor I ever had at Foothill College. He is very passionate about music and is easily reachable whenever. He also gives really good feedbacks on the assignment and encourages creative thinking. As long as you do your work in a timely manner, you should ace this class easily.

great professor and a really laid-back class if u need humanities credit. the course outline and grading criteria is very simple and hartwell makes it very easy to succeed in the class.

Took this for honors credits, really good class and interesting to learn about music history in an engaging way—just show up to class and take notes for participation points and honors project is way shorter than other HPs ive done. Very good professor, he cares about his students—take this class with a friend though it's more fun that way

I took music F008. you need 1840 points for an A in the class. Every week you do 1 listening lab, which is essentially watching a music video and answering prompts. 1 quiz per week, all answers are in the readings. You also get 50 points for each day you come to class and take notes in your blue book. Great class, with a fun professor.

There are actually 2 professors teaching. Kay Thornton and Robert Hartwell. This class is easy and they provide you all the information to succeed in the class. Worth it in my opinion and everything is online, no in person!

He was one of my favorite profs during my heavy spring quarter (20units). really sweet and made sure you knew what you were doing. the hw was super easy (only answering a few questions in reference to music/song). the quizzes had limited takes but the questions can be answered by the readings/google. Extra credit is offered too.

I took this class in the summer and the professors were caring. There were weekly quizzes from some articles but all the answers were in there. Our assignments were based on short videos that were actually interesting and easy to talk about. Overall an amazing experience with my first college course and I highly recommend.
