resented that in both this class and his film class, his lecture was basically a verbatim recounting of the textbook... which he always wrote and which was never available used. I also resented that it was a crap shoot getting a good sub-teacher.
It's so annoying that he uses only textbooks that he writes...his test ?s come directly from class notes/study guides. Talks about sex ("interspecies sexual violation!") almost as much as course content. Very odd, but nice man.
he mangaged to cram a lot of information into this course.
A great teacher. Makes lectures interesting to listen to. He has a unique manner, but he makes the subject interesting and relevant by relating it to current events. Very nice man too.
Prof nice, but lectures follow his textbook verbatim. Redundant. Easy class. Takes attendance in lecture!
Great Professor in general. His lectures do come straight form the book but are interesting. His test are easy as long as you do your reading and come to class. Nice guy.
Has a funny put-on accent- "film nawahrr"...but funny and knowledgeable. Unfortunately the class is a rehashing of the textbook he wrote...read it an get an A. Bring a laptop or something to class so you won't pass out from boredom.
Media 180 was ok, the film class was better. But in both, read the textbook and take good notes-you'll get an A. And always remember the term "interspecies sexual violation!"
i love this professor! lecture is straight from the book that he writes. love his hand motions when he emphasizes certain points. tests are exactly the same format as the book. keep up the reading and get an A
an interesting teacher with an amusing teaching style. he frequently got guest teachers for special subject matter, which was pretty cool.
I took him for media 180 and then film 101 and he's so easy it's great! Don't take classnotes because the test is straight from the book with a study guide to go along with it!
Really funny guy. He made the class as exciting as a college class can be. If you plan on taking this class, I would denfinately try to take it with him.
Very funny guy. Interesting anecdotes in lecture. Tests are very easy.
This was a very interesting class on Censorship of American Movies. The readings were pretty boring. Tests were easy, but the study sheet contained a lot of stuff to memorize!
great guy, very interesting, and always has something interesting to say. very laid back and the class has that feel as well. i highly recommend taking it. he knows his stuff too, which is a rarity.
What can I say? Tooo Easy! His lectures are what the book says, word by word & so are his tests. His tests are first-grade easy, but graded by the instructor. You learn nothing besides the book and it is mandatory to be in all his boring lectures. Extremely nice person, though.
He is the MOST straight-forward professor I have ever had. Just read the assignments and we ALWAYS review before the exams! You can't ask for much more! He's pretty much giving away the answers ... just keep alert and listen and learn!
His lectures are EXACTLY the same as the assigned reading (from his book that he wrote). He doesn't offer any new or additional information. In fact, he might as well just be reading directly from his book during class. Nevertheless, the material is pretty interesting and the class was easy.
Gives humorous lectures though material is basically from the text (which he wrote & published). However, the clips he plays relevant to the material during the lectures do make things a lot more interesting.
OK, he talks a lot in class, but is basically repeating what's in the book. He is a little boring but kind of kool. He will give the class a list of questions to study for the test. So basically as long as you study them well, you'll do just fine. Also we saw a lot of film (very nice). You can recover sleep time is the movie is boring :)
he ended up grading my discussion class because the TA passed away. he gave me a good grade, and i like the way he teaches. hes always prepared with a slide show and cracks funny jokes.
material is solidly presented. but he doesnt engage the class at all. fine class if you want an easy grade. if you actually want to learn something, not so great. it's about what you're supposed to know about film, fine. but he makes it what you're supposed to think about what's good and what's not. boring and trite. if u can, take someone else.
definitely knows his stuff. kinda boring at times but i think i lucked out because going to lecture wasn't really mandatory... my ta practically handed us all the questions and answers that were going to be on the test. tests are written but like i said.. we were basically given all the questions and answers and it was super easy anyway. good stuff
HOLY BORING!!! i dont understand what the purpose of class is, he just dictates his powerpoint display that he posts on blackboard anyways. no need to take notes, just printout the powerpoint notes. drink some coffee or redbull b4 class, this guy will put u 2 sleep!
Very pleasant man... explains everything in some what of a comedic manner and keeps you interested. VERY EASY TESTS! All the information is given to you before hand all you need to do is memorize it. Take him but avoid his T.A. named Gonzalez.
AWESOME teacher..he's funny, knows what he's talking about and the tests..so easy..just memorize the study guide
This class is great but becareful of what T.A you have because most of hese T.A's act like they are the professors for this course and try to treat you like you are nothing. One that note, stay clear of the arrogant T.A named T. Hayes!!!!!!!! He takes this course to heart as if he is the professor and he grades very hard for no reason at all!!!
this guy knows his stuff. he wrote the text book. very clear and funny. pik prof gonzalez as ur TA. he is very easy..no papers only 3 tests and a final. if ur into film this classs is a breeze. he keeps you interested. just do the reading and participate in the discussion class where u will watch movies.
probably the best prof at hunter..knows his stuff and knows how to communicate his knowledge to students...lecture is always lively and gives u a study guide for the finals...a paper is required for the course but nothing too difficult..recommend u take both his classes FILM-101 and Media-180
Holy Boring!
Good prof. A bit dry at times, but hits you with a zinger. Knows his stuff. Lessons come right from the book, so as long as you follow the readings you'll pass no problem. Tests are a pain, though; several essays within 45 minutes.
Great class to take! Enjoyable and interesting. Exams are easy when you do the whole study guide. Attendance is taken in class so you want to be there. He's funny and keeps the class awake with his energy most of the time even though the material isn't alwaysss too great.
he is one of the best, he is fuuny and makes things interesting.
Great professor, made lectures fun and interesting, great slides, hard essay exams, just study the slides and the textbook and you will do fine. Attendance taken in each lecture but you really don't want to miss class anyway!
I can not begin to sing the praises of this man. Made the class interesting and fun.He has a sharp whit sure to keep students interested.Review sheets were very informative and thoroughly helped prepare me for tests. Do yourself a favor and take him if you can.
easy A
zzzzzz. i saw his name and my brain just shut off. extremely knowledgeable, even though his opinions are questionable. but totally unengaging class. vocal diarrhea. if someone interesting teaches the class, take them instead.
I have almost no interest in this subject, and amazingly, his classes were pretty interesting. He's witty & has a good disposition. Very helpful to use textbook & textbook website. He puts up lecture slides & VERY HELPFUL review sheet for tests. Long essay tests but all questions are from review sheets. Attendance taken at lectures. =(
One of the best film professors I ever had and one of the nicest. If you can't get an A in his class, god help you.
wierd, boring and talked too much.
Extremely nice professor who makes funny jokes and makes the info interesting. Careful if you fall asleep in his class. I've seen him several times make an example of students, not in a mean way, but he'll stop the lecture and lightly make fun of you for sleeping. Take notes as a way to stay awake. TAs are hit or miss. Cute in a clownish way.
his lectures mean nothing.you have to read everything from the book.if you have a bad TA theres not much Stanely can do.one easy paper.tests are pretty easy and gives a study sheet before each test with the exact qwuestions that the test has.his lectures are pretty useless so you'll have to learn all the material by yourself from the textbook
His class is basically a 400 level, all of his tests are like page essays on soo much information. we also have quiz's every other week, his lectures dont even help and theyre mandatory which sucks, i am an A student and even Im not getting this in his class for the first time. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS I URGE!!!!
Not a bad prof. Makes some funny jokes every now & then. You have more interaction w/ the TA's than him though. Easy enough to pass as long as you read the book. His lectures are more like supplemental material to the text
If you've taken Film 101, then the structure is the same. Quizzes in sections, LONG essay exams in lecture. The essay exams are easy if you do the entire review sheet and do the reading. Main problem is he doesn't engage the class enough, so students get bored and restless often.
Great Prof. Really interesting, kind of funny. Overall A+
Horrible. Hard class. Mean. Boring. Not funny.
Professor Stanley took some getting used to but I enjoyed him more and more as the semester went along. His "study guides" for the exams tell you exactly what's going to be on them. A nice guy and, if you pay any attention at all, an easy A.
Amazing prof! Very Knowledgeable and interesting. You actually have to read the text but it's very interesting. 30mc 10 t/f test for every chapter. Very fair grader, will give free points if most of the class got the Q wrong or if it wasn't discussed in class enough. Take home final paper. Very thorough. Funny. Not mean or borring at all!
Took film 101 & Media 180.Funny guy.Seemed like he enjoyed lecturing film rather than Media .Either way its a fun class. Can get sleepy which he makes fun when kids actually pass out in front of him.Go to class, make notes of what he talks about,it will help in the test questions. He basically answers them for you.Essay exams.4 tests and drops lowest.
Excellent professor. Very smart, funny, made me more interested in film. Course has 2 tests, 4 quizzes, 1 short paper. Gives a study guide of questions for both tests and final which he then chooses the questions from for the actual tests. The quizzes force you to do the reading which is kind of interesting anyway. Grades depend on TA though.
He is a GOOD Prof, gives 3 exams from the review sheet and one AD paper 5 pags long.
I'm not huge on lectures, but this one was great. Even film nerds will learn a thing or two. Prof Stanley's really funny and I was surprised by some of the clips and films he decided to show us. Some were real standard Film 101 stuff, but others, particularly the clips from 1930s-1940s were off-beat and great. Interesting and extensive film course.
He is such a sweet old guy. Really funny especially since some lectures can be a drag. Exams cover a lot of material but we have a study guide with the exact topics. There is one easy 4-6 page paper. Strict with attendance (you get a grade for it), assigned row for your section, but thats the only complaint. But the TA can make or break this class.
I LOVE YOU PROFESSOR STANLEY!! NEVER A DULL MOMENT AND UNDERSTANDS WHEN STUDENTS SLEEP IN CLASS ( =
He is THE MAN. end of story.
easyyyyy. i got an A+. he's a pretty chill, old prof and makes pervy jokes to make the lecture more interesting but i guess thats his sense of humor. not a bad class. tests are basically short-answers and essays with a huge ass list of topics given before hand (no multiple choice) study and you'll do fine. i crammed the night before always got 90+
Professor Stanley is a fascinating character and beloved by his students. In a nutshell: take him if at all possible.
okay pro. funny at times but overall boring tests are all multiple choice pretty easy if you read the text book
AMAZING!!! take his class you won't reget it. He tells you excatly what is going to be on the exam and the exam comes from his lectures. He is really funny and really manages to make you laugh during his lectures, however, attendance does count and if you fall sleep he will call you out. But overall he makes the class extremely easy.
he is great and funny!! take him you won't reget it. he is very easy and gives you a review sheet of all the questions that will appear on the test and his exams come straight from the lectures. Attendence does count and don't sleep because he well call you out. He is brilliant!!
Takes really dry material and makes it interesting and relevant. His trademark humor also helps to keep you from falling asleep. Too bad he doesn't teach more courses! Not bad to look at it also. He's your typical tweed jacket-wearing prof without the stuffiness.
Bob Stan is the man! So quick-witted it is scary. Fun to listen to. Surprisingly warm for a lecture hall professor. I can go on, but it'd just be more raving.
This man is hilarious. Take him if you get the chance! Exams are easy if you study for them, because the questions are exactly the same as on the review sheets. Go to class and you will learn a lot!
I agree that he is a knowledgeable professor. He knows what he's talking about;however, AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!It's an intro 100 level class and the exams are INSANE!All essay&short answer questions. And you have to be VERY specific to receive full credit. You study and go into the exam thinking you know it but you can never be specific enough for him.
Professor Stanley is simply outstanding. His tests are never surprises because he covers everything in his lectures. He's very strict on attendance and lateness.Participation in his class is a must. He wants everyone to do well in his class and gives supplement exams if students do bad on his tests. The 4-5 pages case study was actually interesting
Along with everyone else, I Love Prof. Stanley (: class is very interesting and his jokes will definitely bring a smile across your face. Easy A. One of my favorite classes!
He is just great! Take his class and see yourself!
Pretty Cool professor! He makes everything crystal clear and gives examples to unfamiliar terms on his slides. Also, He is hilarious. I recommend you take this class!
Absolutely the best professor I've had the pleasure of having at Hunter. Someone mentioned before his exams are difficult: they are and aren't. Knowing the material is not enough for this course: you must be able to think critically to form an analysis of the film. He's a great lecturer, and is clearly enthusiastic about the movies he talks about.
This old fellow is so enthusiastic, worldly, entertaining, and quick-witted that it is impossible not to admire him. You MUST pay attention in class! He will take a few seconds out of his lecture to make fun of you for sleeping. No laptops/phones permitted unless you want to be called out. he's chalk-full of history, monologues, humor. TAKE HIM!
Borderline offensive, constantly obnoxious. He will insult people for going to the bathroom, but make fun of them if they politely ask. Tests are tangential. Wastes a lot of time. Also, no laptops--I guess my silently typing offends someone somewhere? Ok teacher, some find him funny, I think hes a jerk.
I don't know whats up with the hate but Stanley is a VERY good professor with humor. He holds the class for the full 50 minutes and is very well organized with his lectures. There are four quizzes (lowest dropped), one midterm and a final exam. Your success in the class is from the textbook and his lectures; I don't see why any one can't get an A.
Stanley is one of the best professors at Hunter that I've had the pleasure of taking. He doesn't allow laptops bc it distracts you from his otherwise INTERESTING lectures. Why would you need it anyway? And he doesn't make fun of you, he's making fun in general to make the class laugh. If you're taking his jokes personally then you're too sensitive.
I disagree with the comment below. You don't have to read 140pgs if you attend lectures and take good notes. My friends and I didn?t use the textbook at all and we ended up with an A+ how do you explain that? Tests ask basic infomation, if it's too specific, then maybe you shouldn't be taking a college level course.
People are hating b/c they're too attached to their Macbooks. I never used the textbook but attended each lecture, listened, took notes & aced every exam. He gives out study sheets with any potential questions; know the study sheet & you can't fail an exam. The paper is an analysis of a magazine ad. He is witty, some people are just hypersensitive.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. one of the best at hunter. The class material is pretty easy, and he is extremely knowledgeable about the topics. Take his class!
he is one of the best professors! i highly recommend him. Pay attention in lecture and read the text
Really interesting professor I must. He tries his best to keep you awake in class without insulting you because you were sleeping. I think his exams are really easy if you did a complete rundown on the entire study guide he handed out.
By no means is the material easy to grasp, unless if you've taken a PoliSci class, but Stanley makes dry material very interesting with a mix of snark. Read and ask questions if you have to. He reviews the notes everyday. There are 4 short answer exams and one final paper. He will do a review right before the exam for better or worse.
Great professor. If you really pay attention you will love the class. Very interesting and intriguing. Just take good notes during the lecture and you are set to get an A.
This is my third class with him. He's great. I love his method of teaching, he obviously puts a lot of time and work into his lectures and the only reason anyone would rate him poorly would be if they were caught sleeping. He has an interesting sense of humor (even if the same jokes are repeated from semester to semester), not for everyone maybe.
Cool class. Highly recommend this guy. He's interesting, funny, has good taste, easy exams, no homework, one paper. I wish he was teaching this other media class I'm taking right now, the professor is so boring. I miss Stanley.
i had Stanley for my film class one semester, and because my original media professor was in a skiing accident Stanley took over that media class the same semester. though i would hear his same jokes twice in a day I as well as many other people came out of his classes with the following saying "STANLEY IS MY BOY!!!" love his classes
I had him for both media180 and film101, and I cannot say how much I enjoyed attending his lectures! He is the most adorable man ever! His exams are easy if you study for them. He gives review sheets with questions that will be on the exam, a lot of work, but definitely worth it! Would definitely take more classes taught by him!
Great professor, really knows his stuff. He tells you exactly what questions will be on the tests, you just have to know the material. Makes the class really interesting and fun, likes to poke fun at people who fall asleep or get up to go to the bathroom. Really sweet, made me fall in love with media.
love stanley took for film 101 and media, would take another class with him!
Great professor. Highly knowledgeable about what he teaches, yet presents information in an engaging, organized manner. Midterm, final, paper & attendance make up your grade (and quizzes in the discussion sections--4 total, lowest quiz grade dropped). All exams have study guides with the questions that'll appear on the exam. Very fair, smart, witty
Best lecture professor ever. funny, interesting and very knowledgeable. loved his lectures, highly recommend.
All these comments are true, he's a really great guy. If are taking film 101 he will not be the one to decide your grade, the recitation professor will.
He might be the best teacher I have ever got. Prof. Stanley is the silliest man with the best sense of humor. Not only is he very smart but his book is brilliant and clear like no other. His lectures are based on his book. He makes the whole class laugh, they should give him the dr. title because he def knows his craft. To top it off he is adorable
Crystal clear clarity. As we approach the end of the semester I find his jokes are exhausting me. I also hate how he must take out the time to embarrass EVERY kid who falls asleep or uses her cell phone, as it is an amazing waste of time. I am paying you to teach, not to make sure each student is awake for your lecture. It is their loss.
Extermely helpful and funny. Each ppt was basically a summary of the entire chap with a little more information. I feel asleep a lot during class since it was really late, but hes really funny and helpful. It makes you want to read the chapter even more. You can tell because attendance throughout the semester was almost 100%
Wonderful, hilarious, and extremely knowledgable.
He is such a great lecturer I had him late at night and never fall asleep. Lectures are clear and based on the textbook. Print slides before class so you don't waste time writing. Study guide with the exact questions is given before the exams. Didn't recieve my grades for this class yet but I really loved this class-Make you sure you have a good TA
I decided that I had to take him after taking him for Media 180 in the fall, hes a really good lecturer because he explains whatever you're suppose to read for that week. He uses a lot of examples and his slides are clear. His review sheets are the best - there are more questions on the sheet than the test but it really helps because its exactly it
Attendance is a must. The book is your Bible. He knows his stuff and he is an awesome prof. The exams are all writing and fill in the blanks. So you really should be able to write and definitely read his book. His explanations are clear and lectures are interesting and fun. There is never enough time to cover everything in class, though
he is the nicest guy and made me so interested in the class the book is so clear to understand and indespensible for the class
Professors have a problem making their lectures sound interesting to just a few people. But he makes ~250 of us laugh multiple times during a short fifty minute period. Very competent. A little dramatic, and slightly repetitive in his jokes, but no one really cares about that. It's a class you can actually look foward to. Definitely recommend him!
Professor Stanley's lectures are quite entertaining compared to others. He's really funny and explains things clearly. He puts outlines for each class online so you can print it out beforehand instead of taking notes. The tests are comprised of essays and short answer questions but they're posted online before, too. Attendance is mandatory.
Without a doubt, one of the most though-provoking, fun, engaging, nicest professors I have ever had the pleasure of taking. I looked forward to going to his class every week. I hope he stays at Hunter for many more years.
oh my god if youre taking media 180 for a ger AVOID AT ALL COSTS not at all an easy A boring as hell. its one of those ger classes that end up being more work than your core classes. hes funny and everything but my section leader sucked. bottom line you can find a better prof/class to fulfill the ger
Best professor ever! He's funny and enthusiastic and knows his stuff inside and out, although I've fallen asleep before in his class, I still enjoy his lectures because they're really interesting and I want to learn more from him! Planning to take film100 with him next semester! :) students need to stop being mean to him, hes awesomeeee
An okay teacher. Not as interesting as a film professor could be. He says "uhhh" after every word he says and isn't really a public speaker. If you have a basic understanding of film this class is incredibly boring.
Professor Stanley is the reason I am a Media Studies major. Absolutely loved this guy and his class! Attendance is mandatory, but trust me, you will want to show up. His lectures are interesting and he always makes them funny! Most questions for the midterm and final are on the study guides he gives out. He wants his students to do well. Take him!!
i freaking love this man. seriously, super clear and easy to follow. may seem dull at times but every professor over the age of 45 does. there should be an adorable option instead of hot because he is the epitome of cute grandpa.
Love Stanley! Super funny, down-to-earth, intelligent, and calls people out when they're being disruptive. Taking another class of his next semester. Definitely recommend - you probably won't be bored for long
Pretty Boring. This guy kept repeating the same thing over and over again. He is old school. Don't take him.
Don't take this course. This guy is not laid-back. doesn't wanna see phones & ipads in his lecture.
Lecture is alright. He basically teaches to the book since he wrote it. You watch 3 movies and you'll probably hear about Casablanca in every class. Hates seeing electronic devices and won't hesitate to call you out if he sees them/if you leave early. It's a pretty easy class if you pay attention.
Textbook helps alot during the tests. His tests are not easy but he gives you all the questions in advance and then chooses which ones he puts on the test. lectures arent exciting but sometimes his commentary is hilarious. overall not the easy A i expected but i recommend it to fulfill the creative requirement.
Prof. Stanley is very good at being a lecture professor and is very knowledgeable. He doesn't grade you at all, the main professor does that, but Stanley is grade "A" type, and yes, he is old school, but that's the best part about him. He's a very likable character, and very funny too in a dry sort of way but still very funny. I recommend him!
He's like a cute grandpa. He knows his material and tries his best to make it interesting. He supplies outlines for lectures which are so much easier to take notes on. He tells you exactly whats going to be on the midterm as well.
I don't want to say the class was THAT difficult, but it was no cake walk. It's more of a history lesson, than a film analysis class. The discussion sections are where the quizzes are given, and they are not that easy. At least with my TA they weren't. The professor's textbook, which he wrote, is quite verbose and the chapters are long.
Took his class for both Media 180 and Film 101. Nice and funny guy. Attendance is a must, no electronics, no sleeping(he's not afraid to point you out). Tests were extremely easy as long as you study the study sheet(he gets his questions right off of it) Clear lectures, based off textbook. Overall, pretty easy A if you study review sheet.
This class at times really interesting and at other times rather boring, it is very similar to a history class since we tend to focus and learn about the changes of medium through times. He is very friendly person, and hates having phones and computers out in class. 4 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final
Stanley is indeed the cute grandpa mentioned by other comments. His course, though, is not as easy as the ratings lead you to believe. Quizzes (the final exam by comparison is 20) are 30% of your grade and are given by his TAs who include the most insignificant things in the verbose textbook. Attendance in both lecture and discussion is mandatory.
Perhaps the most boring prof. His film 101 class is a history class. He expects you to provide deepthorough analysis of the most mundane, painfully boring historical events dating back to the late 1800s. Tests long essays no m.c choice. His textbook is verbose to say the least and he rambles on about nonsense. Stay far,far away if love yourself!
He was kewl but very strict in the way he wants things done. will call you out with no hesitation. Alot of material but it was easy enough to understand if read. Attendance is mandatory. On the fence if I would take the class again but not totally against it.
He's a great lecturer but it honestly all depends on what discussion professor you get because the discussion professor gives you the quizzes and grades your paper. Midterm and final very straightforward
stanley is the best !! had him for media 180 and film 101. his lecture's are pretty interesting, and he's a really good speaker overall and makes you laugh. just don't get caught with your phone in lecture, or falling asleep
He is a great professor. He makes the class very fun. Anyone would enjoy taking hims class
Stanley does not lecture like the typical 70 year old man. His charm and wit makes most lectures downright entertaining. He does an excellent job elaborating on clear, concise powerpoints, while drawing you into the lesson with unexpected colloquialisms and humor. I highly recommend his class. Prepare to read his textbook for good grades.
Professor Stanley is an excellent lecturer. His lessons are captivating and he has a way of making a boring topic the most interesting thing in the world. He sends out notes for class before class, so you can skim through them and know what's going on in class. For 180, you don't need to use the textbook to pass. Stanley's all you need!
Lectures are worth going to. It sucks people keep leaving early because he makes the effort for his students to clarify and explain thoroughly. He's also just very funny. Not to mention, he sends you his lecture outlines before class so it's helpful during midterm and finals time.
Although all electronics were not allowed in class, the lectures flew by every time. He's able to take the material and make it interesting and funny. You get outlines for the lectures before class. 1 midterm, 1 paper, 1 final. Quizzes in discussion as well and attendance is mandatory. Study guides were a lifesaver for the exams. Hope to take again
The readings are long and extremely boring. The course itself seems long and extremely boring. He, however, tries his hardest to be captivating and funny. He often has the entire auditorium cracking up at his jokes even though another second everyone would be fast asleep. You can tell he knows what he's saying, and for an older man is very modern.
Stanley is an awesome professor! Although his lectures are really long, he does try to light up the mood in the lecture and always have jokes in the middle of the lecture. He has a significant amount of knowledge on the subject. 1 midterm 1 final and a research paper about 5-6 pages. Study guides were basically the outline of the tests.
He's really good, I'd take it again
Stanley is very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about his subject. Sometimes he mixes his words up which can cause comprehension issues. He is a very nice man. He also makes very funny jokes. I'd take him again in the film world.
He's incredibly nice and funny! His lecture slides and detailed study guides are great test preparation and he gives extra credit. Most of the exams had a question worth a lot of points regarding a case we spent numerous time on. 4 exams in total. The book he assigned glossed over complicated terms which he explained in class.
Only a good professor if you are on his good side. Can be rude at times. Gives a clear outline of the course with no surprises.
He is amazing! I highly reccomend him.
Prof Stanley is the only professor that could make me enjoy a media law class so thoroughly. He's a real gem. Absolutely hilarious, smart, sometimes snarky, but still kind and very willing to help. He would call on people for answers which was initially awkward but ultimately helpful. Class is a little dull, but Stanley makes it worth taking.
Sometimes he reads directly off of his slides, but overall he's a knowledgeable professor who goes exactly by the syllabus and won't catch you off guard with something else unwritten. He has a clear grading system and the exams are basically the study guide. The only downside is that very few things shape up your grade.
Professor Stanley is hilarious! He makes even the dullest topics in media interesting. I am taking him again for film101 next semester. His knowledge and passion for the topics covered are very clear in every one of his lectures. Would highly recommend.
He only teaches the lecture session. He is a funny guy. This class does not allow any electronic devices, but he gives lecture notes, and that's the only way you can take notes for that class.
Lectures heavily rely on the presentation, though it is helpful for students with non-native English, as his words sometimes are hard to comprehend.
Great Professor. I learned a great deal in this class.
Great professor, interesting old guy that was quite entertaining at times too lol
I took this class for a requirement and ended up loving it a lot more than I anticipated. He's really funny at times and makes the content interesting. You need to study for exams, but the study guide covers all of the material thoroughly and everything is fairly straightforward. Solid choice for anyone interested!
Prof Stanley is so sweet and very passionate about the subject though his lectures did seem to put other students to sleep, literally. Tests are straight forward and easy if you pay attention in the lectures. Plus, you get to watch 3 great movies which is super cool. I didn't find the book was really required to pass.
Had Professor Stanley for Film 101 and it was amazing. He is a fantastic teacher and wrote his own textbook so everything is very clear and in his own words. He is hilarious, you watch movies, and learn a lot of interesting things not just through reading but visuals. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Prof. Stanely is amazing!! He makes media interesting and manages to make you stay awake during lecture. If you can't make it though, he records and uploads videos of the lecture on youtube(you just have to watch them).
Stanley is the boi, he uploads every lecture online so if you cant attend or dont want to, its fine you can just watch it. He is a funny guy as well that keeps the class interesting and the only grades for the lecture are the tests. But since he is the boi, he gives u weekly questions, just study those and you will do great. Stanley 4 eva
Super boring but a great professor. Attendance not mandatory and if you watch the video lectures and do the readings, you will pass. Definetley need to work for an A, 3 tests each 25%, no final.
Use the Study guide and you'll pass or pay attention to his lectures that are actually entertaining and funny at times. Stanley as a person is nice and great
Professor Stanley is very funny and he makes his lectures enjoyable. You don't have to attend lectures because he uploads his video-lectures online. His exams are really easy, do the readings and study your notes from lecture (there were exams where the majority of questions were about class notes/readings). Overall a really easy class.
Sometimes his lectures can be boring but most of the time I found them incredibly entertaining. attendance was optional but I went to class just to see them in person. When given study guides, answer the questions to the best of ability, because the tests are usually is a simplified version of the study guide. Discussion sections are important!
Actual love of my life. Sweetest professor I've ever met and is so clearly passionate about what he teaches. Attendance isn't required and he records and posts every lecture online! Very strict about no phones/ computers in lecture but his lectures are so interesting and he's such a funny guy you won't miss it.
Lectures are recorded and posted online, so it's fine if you don't attend. Tests are based on assigned readings and occasional content strictly from lectures. Make sure you complete the study guides and memorize specific information that pertain to the study questions as they are key to passing the tests!
Professor Stanley lectures are a little boring, you can't talk or use your phone or he will point you out, but its an easy A. The class is basically history about media and you can skip the lectures because he posts them online. He gives review sheets which are the same questions on his exam! So answer the questions beforehand and it will be easy.
Really good class, really easy A, uploads his lectures on YouTube and 90% his exams are based off those lectures.
Wonderful, wonderful teacher! I read his book for film class and it was well written. I took his media 180 class, and lectures were interesting (albeit sometimes a bit slow). He is very funny, super respectful and incredibly knowledgeable. Uploads all his lectures on video too!!! No devices allowed, but it honestly improved the class.
Honestly just a great professor. You might be a bit bored if Film doesn't interest you, but it's pretty easy to find interesting topics to grab onto in each lecture. His lectures aren't mandatory, as attendance is not taken. Even so, I always went- even when it was my only class of the day and the train ride was longer than the class itself.
Prof. Stanley is so nice, but I wouldn't say this class is an EASY A just because it's a lot of memorizing, but other than that his exams are very straight forward and definitely not trying to trick you. He gives you a study outline and picks the written questions straight from that outline. Discussions to me were pointless but attendance counts.
He didnt finish writing our textbook & still made us pay for it. Only $17 but still annoying to have to go get an unfinished book. He does big lectures and theyre really easy to fall asleep during. You have to really be awake in order to pay attention.
I find it to be an easy class. One of the nicer professors at Hunter. Just read before showing up to class. The textbook he was writing wasn't complete when the course started, but it's no big deal. He's a straight forward guy. I like him way better than the lab professor connected to this class.
The textbook and the lectures is all you need to pass his exams. Also some basic background knowledge on history will really improve your understanding of what hes teaching. Hes funny and tries to grab your attention through clips, images, and stories. The lab is more participating based and a review.
Grade is mostly two exams. Good news: you can self study and do great (questions are straightforward and easy). Don't bother taking notes, just study right before exams. Lecture with Stanley is boring. He insists you buy his book (only at Shakespeare's) but then regurgitates it for lecture. Attendance mandatory (sign-in), no electronics ever.
Incredibly hilarious and very aware of current social issues, which is surprising considering his age. Overall a very great professor, but has some difficulty in enforcing his syllabus. Can be unorganized sometimes.
Prof. Stanley was ver accommodating during the COVID-19 classes. He delivers his lectures in a way that is engaging and understandable.
THE BEST! Total sweetheart and lovely in class! Totally take him if you can!
He is a funny professor, but is very strict in terms of electronic devices. The material in the class may seem like a lot but he gives review sheets before the exam so you know exactly what to study. He also makes you buy his own book which correlates with each unit we study. The midterm and final is both easy if you take notes and study accordinly
Okay, first the lectures are VERY boring, it is basically a history class of media. But some of materials are actually very helpful and meaningful consider if you actually read the textbook. The professor himself is a really chill professor, he tries to make the lecture more entertaining and jokes (often R-Rated) around quite frequently.
Participation is a big part of your grade for the discussion section. Besides that, it is very easy and you do not have to attend lectures, which are pretty much just the professor summarizing the chapter we were assigned to read. Overall, the class is easy and good if you need credit or are interested in media.
Both discussion and lecture is just reading his extremely poorly written book full of opinions and ideas that you should not question if you want to get an A. It's an easy A but if you want to actually learn something - you're better on your own.
He was very straightforward. There were quizzes after each chapter, but they were online so it was easy and fun. The material of the class can be interesting, lectures are sometimes unnecessary but they are by no means bad. He is a chill dude, funny, relaxed, great vibes for sure
Took this class during COVID. No tests! There were 12 quizzes (25 questions each, open notebook!). You need to read the textbook in order to answer the questions (the book is written by the professor himself). He is very nice and accommodating with circumstances. There are weekly discussions with TA's which is where you participate.
Professor Robert is amazing, fun and his book is actually very interesting if you pay attention. Yes, you have to read the whole book to give the quizzes and final exam, but they are not timed and are open-book quizzes. His lectures can be very boring but interesting if you understand the materials. He really wants his students to learn and grow.
Professor Stanley's class consisted of weekly lectures and discussions taught by a teaching assistant. Overall, as long as you read the textbook, there is no reason why you shouldn't receive an A unless you do not often participate during the discussion classes. You will have around 10 quizzes that are 25 questions each (not timed). Easy A!
Average class in my opinion. However, if you are REALLY interested in media studies, then you are really about to have the time of your life. The professor knows his stuff & the "textbook" is his own written book (just came out). The bad part is which discussion instructor you get. If they are a tough grader, your grade will go from an A to a C.
Loved taking his Media class. Very easy to follow and teaches you something important every lecture.
He was a pretty good professor and his lectures were actually interesting. I found it kinda odd that the class forced all students to buy his book but overall pretty decent. Read a chapter and do a small quiz on it every week and at the end do a small final. Id take him again.
Professor Stanley is very sweet and knowledgable. His class was fun and very very easy. There was no homework except the weekly quizzes and they are all straight from the book. He knows his stuff and I really enjoyed this class.
Had him online. He wrote the book we use so yeah he knows a lot, but I wouldnt rlly recommend. Not HORRIBLE buttt he harps on you to participate a lot & cold-called once ina while. Camera on was mandatory. Found myself counting down time till class ended. Prob wouldnt have gotten thru it without the zoom chat tbh, your peers make it worth it.
Professor Stanley's class is enjoyable. He is a well knowledge person. His book is written well. The class structure is not confusing. The quizzes are pretty alright, sometimes all of it from the text other times you do have to search it up. The discussion classes help but it depends on the instructor you get. Pretty easy class.
This class was boring asf, you don't learn jack in this class. You just read his bumass book with no direction, if you want an easy grade take this.
He's so kind and funny. Participation is very important and counts for a large part of the final grade. I really enjoyed the lectures, and a lot of the time he added video clips as well and it was super helpful. The quizzes were open notes and very easy to understand. I would definitely recommend.
Robert is so great. Lectures are engaging & interesting, & weekly quizzes are very easy & straight from his textbook, & they are all open notebook & you can collaborate with others to complete them. As long as you ensure to participate by either raising your hand or type nuanced thoughts into chat, this class is super chill & an easy A.
Professor Stanley was ok, I didn't really get to know him considering he didn't have time to individually talk to his students (his class had almost 300 students). I did talk to his assistance; they were great. The class was very easy. Every week we had a quiz on the textbook that literally was open book. Overall, pretty good class for the credit
Stanley is a great professor, he's super funny and his lectures are clear. The content of this class is very boring though. There are ten 50-question quizzes based on the readings from the book that he wrote, so you definitely have to dedicate the time for the grade. The final paper was pretty hard and there was little to no clarification.
Not going to lie, the class is pretty boring if you have no interest in Media, but if you are looking for an easy A for an individual and society credit this class is good for it! He is very kind and so funny. there are 10 quizzes in this course and they are all online and open book. Overall good class to have.
super boring. everything based on a terribly written textbook
Pretty easy class. Quizzes are open notes on Blackboard. No final exam, but a final essay which was also easy. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory, but discussion attendance is. Just pay attention to the major points in his book and you are good. I hope you don't hate reading though, because his book is very boring and redundant.
His lectures just went over the things in the textbook, which you will need to get to do the quizzes and it seems like he makes changes to that textbook every year since he wrote it. Didn't speak to him at all because it's just a huge lecture hall. There is a discussion section which is important to participate in different professor. Overall easy
TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM I loved this class, 50 Q homework each week and that's everything. It's a huge class, but still a very interesting class. Take this instead of boring history class.
Lectures were very very boring. Wanted to fall asleep in each class, did so like three times, and kept dozing off. Quizzes based on each chapter of his book which he will make you buy (online kindle version is cheaper). Take the class for an easy grade. WORK TOGETHER ON QUIZZES. Final exam is a short paper
As expected, the course is simply a repeat of his textbook, ad verbatim. At surprise to no one, the textbook is REQUIRED for his class. Oh, and what a coincidence there are no used versions of his textbook on sale anywhere. There does not even exist a copy of it on sites that shall not be named in the course of over a decade he has taught this.
Had him for a zoom class, class is massive and he talks about his poorly written textbook the whole time. His voice is veryyyy droning and always made me fall asleep
The lectures are pretty much just retreads of what his own book says, of which you are expected to read a chapter for every two or so classes (pretty much weekly). The language in said book can also be pretty dense at times, and very tiring to read through. At least quizzes are open book.
By far one of the worse professors to have as a freshman! For starters, his lectures were a waste of time since it was a complete repeat of his book (a required "textbook") of his class. The book itself tries too hard to be intellectual and uses filler words to hide the lack of substance. 50 Multiple choice quizzes every week.
Easy class with weekly quizzes (11 of them), and a very soft final paper. Participation and attendance matters so don't miss class. The downsides are that his lectures can be really boring, you need to buy his textbook, and is often just a repeat of the book, but it is an easy class to take overall. RIP Stanley.
RIP Professor Stanley you were such a great Professor. I learnt so much in your class and wish you were still around. Your presence is heavily missed on campus. Thank you for the work you put in. Quite literally right up until the day you died. We love you.
