Hessling is amazing, he's laid back and relates to his students super well. 302 is very paper based but he gives you feedback and then lets you re-submit the paper for a better grade. Just beware, he doesn't tell you every single thing you did wrong, so some careful self critique is in order as well. Overall a great, super helpful professor.

In class clicker quizzes everyday. They were only two points and fairly easy so it wasn't too big of a deal, but if you skip class a lot, it'll add up. If you read most of the chapters, it's almost a guaranteed pass, even if it is a low C. Extra credit options available. It is graded on a curve to help everyone out. He is really funny. Great class.

The tests can be very difficult if you don't do the assigned readings AND go to class. That's right, you need to do both to succeed. He does have all of his lecture notes typed out and such if you need to look through them, but don't just rely on those. He is very entertaining and I would recommend to take any course he teaches.

I loved this class. Robert Hessling is by far my favorite professor at Iowa State. I actually looked forward to his lectures because they were fun and enjoyable. You almost forgot you were learning. I highly recommend taking this class - you won't regret it!

Every slide has pictures and he shows lots of video clips that break up lecture. He is hilarious and makes class so enjoyable. I wish he taught the entire class instead of the second half of the semester! Have to be there for class and read the textbook to pass.

Dr Hessling is the second instructor for this course and is an awesome dude. He's pretty chill and laid back. Really friendly. I think he makes the class more interesting than the other instructor Dr Wells. His powerpoint are a lot more clear cut than Dr Wells. He explains stuff really well.

Honestly the best professor I have had

I didn't expect this class to be very hard but it turned out the material was really confusing and upper level. Dr. Hessling's tests were very difficult because every question seemed to have two correct answers. In the end really easy extra credit brought up my grade a lot. I highly recommend reading the textbook, it helps clear up the confusion.

Had him for the second semester following Gary Wells, who i thought would be impossible to top. Ended up being amazing! He really knows what he's talking about and presents it in an interesting and easy to understand way. Funniest teacher I've ever had! Uses lots of videos and demonstrations. Tests aren't easy, but not hard if you go to class.

I had Hessling in Psych 280 so I was super excited when I got the chance to take another class taught by him. He makes lectures fun and entertaining and gives a good amount of extra credit to help boost your grade. Take the tests seriously. I did bad on the first exam and wasn't able to get my grade to a full A by the end of the semester.

Dr. Hessling is awesome. He uses all sorts of memes and videos during lectures. He's very funny. I'll be taking as many classes with him as possible.

He gave us a guide on how to write the APA papers and report statistics for the class at the beginning of the semester, and it was a lifesaver! You turn papers in twice. The first time isn't graded and he gives you feedback on how to fix the paper so you can get a better grade. Overall an easy class, put in a bit of effort and you'll get an A.

Recently switched my major to psychology and Dr. Hessling made me glad I did! Don't hesitate to ask questions. This course is VERY content heavy. Lecture AND reading the book are both important to get higher than a C- on exams. I also had him for Psych 302. Would recommend him for any class, he has a great personality and is absolutely hilarious!

Dr. Hessling is the professor after Gary Wells (the course is split into 2 sections). I personally cant decide who i enjoyed more. Hessling is a very good lecturer, funny, likes to use memes and videos to demonstrate what he is teaching. He is an extremely nice man. Made me laugh at his geekiness (video games, board games, comics) bc i related.

Hessling lectures the second half of PSYCH280 and you may not think it could get any better than Gary Wells but he's just as fantastic if not even more so. Sometimes lectures seem a little repetitive (very similar to the readings). Always joking around and teaching good life skills.

10/10 I love him so much. Signed up for more classes with him next semester. He's hilarious and always willing to talk during office hours or after class. As long as you read and take notes in class you'll do fine.

Bob is the best. He's my favorite professor by far and I think he's an amazing professor. His grading criteria is very clear. Going to class is the equivalent of reading the textbook. I recommend going to class, but if you have a pal in the class, definitely not necessary. He gives extra credit for reading the textbook, so read and go to class!

Professor Hessling provides you with slides to take notes on but removes a few words on each slide to make sure you go to class. As long as you fill in the notes you dont really need to read the book for exams. Plus he offers a ton of extra credits so this class is an easy A.

I took both of Dr. Hessling's 280 and 314 courses. Psych 280 (social psychology) is way more textbook heavy, which can difficult if you don't stay on top of it, while Psych 314 (motivational psychology) is focused on exams and papers. I found both classes to be interesting and Hessling delivers a fantastic lecture. Just be aware that you will work

Doctor Robert Hessling. A true hero and inspiration. A real God in the flesh. The sweetest man alive. Such a great professor. He teaches exactly what we need to learn and stays on track and defines things very clearly. Love this man. Someone wife him up.

He gets outshines by Gary Wells a lot, but I think he's as good of a professor as Wells. His lectures were always interesting and fun. They were often interactive, and his exams were easy enough if you go to class and read the book. He gives PowerPoints with partial notes, which makes note taking super easy.

Tophat questions for attendance, great sense of humor. Interesting course and many extra credit opportunities. Answers questions all of the time. Go to the review session before exam, he is a big softy & will tell you the short answer questions. Review guides help a lot but are time-consuming. Do the research credits! It is easy to follow the notes

One of the best professors I've had. He has mastered the art of lecturing. His lectures are entertaining and relevant. He seems to genuinely care about his students. He does give tophat quizzes every lecture so you probably need to attend every lecture. He works really hard to prepare his students for the exams. Make use of the review guides.

Dr. Hessling is definitely the best psych professor at ISU. He tries to keep the class light and fun, he includes funny pictures and videos in his lectures, and he also explains very well the information in class. It's best if you read the book before going to class, but you will be fine if you don't. For his exams just study the review guide.

Psych280 was great! He made the online lectures so easy and amusing to listen to. I could just listen to them like a podcast in my car while driving

One of the best lecturures I've had at university. Implements videos within the lecture. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Like literally playing VR games for extra credit. If you read the chapters they take an hour each, the lectures will complement it very well. Will respond to e-mail quickly and is understanding with late homework.

When prof Wells switched with Hessling halfway through the semester I was sad at first because Wells was great and set the bar high. But Hessling blew me away with how engaging his lectures were, the videos he implements in class, and how transparent he is about every test, assignment, etc etc Show up to class, take notes, and you'll get an A

I really enjoyed Dr. Hessling for PSYCH 101. He's an awesome lecturer and genuinely wants you to succeed in class. The concept of PSYCH 101 itself it just memorizing and he sets you up for that with the homework and slides.

Dr. Bob is a very wholesome guy and a great lecturer. His lectures were among the most entertaining and engaging I had. Lots of videos and culturally relevant examples. He had the whole lecture hall laughing at least once a day. The content is generally very easy, with a lot of memorization. Getting an A is easy if you go to class and study.

His tests are hard to study for because I did not know how to study for them. I haven't gotten a good grade on any of his tests. If I knew how to study for his tests this course would be so much better.

This class is very fun but get ready to work. This is not an easy A. You will have to put in the time and effort to study. The written portion of the exam is harshly graded.

For Psych 314 specifically, the lectures are most important, and the readings are only relevant for the reading quizzes. You can skim the readings if you attend class and still do well in this course.

This guy loves his job and you can tell. So easy to understand because he knows the material by heart and has a passion for it. Hessling is the main reason I discovered my love for psychology and declared my minor. Exams are difficult, but doable. EC gets you there. I cannot recommend this guy enough, and Id tell everyone to take him at some point.

Amazing professor, 10/10 would recommend. His lectures are so entertaining, and he puts memes and funny videos to describe the concepts in his presentations. Class attendance is pretty much extra credit because we do top hat at the beginning of class which is 2 extra credit points.

Amazing and fun class if you enjoy the topics and want an entertaining professor to learn it from. I really enjoyed the topics and tests weren't too hard. Lots of extra credit available to take advantage of and are really easy to do.

Dr. Hessling did a good job at making class fun and enjoyable, my main issue with this class was that we were only graded off of multiple choice as the writing assignments were thrown out after the first exam. If you aren't okay with your knowledge being assessed strictly by multiple choice this is not the class for you.

Bob is a great professor, he finds good ways to teaching and ways to learn material. My only problem was that the exams were extremely difficult, even if I studied for several days. In the end, with all of the extra credit (there was A LOT), I ended with a high A, but I was worried throughout the semester because of my scores on the exams.

Professor Hessling is SO engaged with the students and truly cares about everyone in the room. He is easy to talk to and treats his lectures like a conversation. The slides are entertaining there are a lot of chances for extra credit! The exams can be a little tricky, but with patience and studying you will do just fine.

One of the best online classes I have taken. The instructor gives out funny lectures that relates to the material. He also gives out extra credit that is easy and accessible to do every week. There is no homework expect to watch the lectures and complete the weekly quiz. Highly recommend to study a little every week to be prepared for the exam.

Dr. Hessling was one of my favorite professors in the psych department at Iowa State. I learned a ton from his classes, he's super engaging to listen to, and he's clearly passionate about his job. Dr. Hessling is a very informative and entertaining professor. His lectures were always fun and easy to digest. As a non-psych major, I found the anatomy parts of the class a bit difficult, but as long as you go over notes and slides you should have no problem with exams.

His lectures were actually interesting and the content was fun to learn about. However his exams are extremely difficult. The average on each exam was between 60-70% and the exams are a huge portion of your grade. There is ample extra credit available, it just requires the extra work. I wouldn't take this class unless you genuinely need to.

I had a good time attending lectures, even though attendance wasn't required; only exams were. He's is a funny and caring guy who made class fun, My only complaint was that the exams were difficult, and you don't need the textbook to make it through the class, waste of money, honestly. But, I did appreciate how much extra credit was given!

Most of my grade for PSYCH1010 was dependent upon how I did on exams, which wasn't great because the first few were tough. He's a great teacher and really tries to get the lecture involved. He's also pretty funny.

You HAVE to read the textbook, some test questions aren't covered in lecture. Make sure you know your case studies too!

Solid professor, uses a lot of slides to teach. He provides the slides to students, but with blanks to fill in. I really liked this as it helped me structure my notes, and it forced me to be focused for every minute of class. He's funny and uses relevant examples to explain psychology to students. Class does require volunteering for psych studies.

Robert Hessling is a great teacher; he makes class interesting and provides us with the materials to prepare for the exams. He does offer extra credit through tophat and he is happy to answer any question you have. I highly recommend him whether it an elective class you're taking or a required one!

Dr. Bob is so fun to have as a teacher. Exams can be hard and take a decent amount of studying but Dr. Bob gives so many extra credit opportunities that is hard not to receive and A or B in the course. He gives funny lectures while also providing an overwhelming amount of examples which really helps for memorizing content! You'll love him!

This class is very course-heavy; you are learning a lot of different concepts all at once, so it can become overwhelming. Attending class is very helpful in passing the class, because the instructor will often include questions on the exams that are direct comments from class and are not covered in the lecture slides provided.

If you go to class and do notes it's really not hard. Hessling is hilarious and makes the lectures not so boring. He also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities so it's not hard to get an A or B. 100% would take another class with him

Dr. Hessling is the most amazing professor! You can tell he really cares for his students and puts a lot of effort into the class. This has been my favorite course throughout college. There are really easy practice exams/quizzes. The tests are like the practice exams. There were 3 easy reflection papers. I really recommend taking a class with him!

Dr. Bob is awesome! His lectures are always really engaging and exams are not particularly difficult. It is easy to earn a lot of extra credit through research credits. He is great at answering questions and is so funny. I hope I can take more classes with him!

Listen here, Dr. Bob is easily a top 3 professor at ISU. He is funny, genuine and an excellent teacher. If you have an opportunity to take a class with him, absolutely do it; he is truly one of a kind. (you will need to attend class and do a decent bit of studying to ace exams as they are in person on paper and somewhat difficult) 10/10 for Dr. Bob

Dr. Hessling is amazing! I took his psych 101 course and he makes his lectures very interesting. The course is test-heavy and will require lots of studying to get a 90 or above. You take 4 exams total, nothing is cumulative. Regardless, I heavily recommend him to anyone!
