Organic Chemistry
HE IS THE VERY BEST TEACHER THAT I EVER HAD. TAKE HIM IF YOU STILL HAVE THE CHANCE BEFORE HE is gone.
this guy is NOT hot!!! he is very boring, does not tech, just writes on transperencies and students have to blindly copy notes, then understand the material by themselves before exams, which by the way are not easy. he gives a hi curve in the end though.
This is a great teacher. I did excellent in the course; I think people just want to be lazy and sleep in and also not study and not studying before an organic exam is suicide no matter how easy your prof is.
I love how they deleted my previous comments about this professor yet retained the ones that praised him. This professor cannot teach, is very difficult, and is very unclear. Avoid him and take orgo in summer with nyalley.
dude is actually OK, his tests dont make sense, but he curves like a bat outta hell. all in all, if you try to do average work, you'll see it turn into an A. Just avoid the other one, Slayden.
Cant teach, hard exams, and curves very little despite popular belief.
Full of himself, blindly writes mechanisms on the overhead without explaining. Exams are extremely difficult....
helluva lot easier than that other one, Slayden. All I did was memorize his notes (take good notes), and thats it. I ended up with an A- by just doing that.
Do not take Organic Chemistry with this professor...he fails nearly 55-60% of the class....which is more his fault because he lectures on one thing and tests you on another.
dam easy guy. Had a personal talk with him, and he says he makes it as easy as possible. He does say that he makes the exam so that anyone who just goes to lecture can pass. The underachiever can pass, the overacheiver can get an A.
Easy? This guy teaches you one thing and tests you on stuff he never taught you and this makes him easy?
This guy reminds you of Mr.Flanders in Simpsons. And thats it. Go watch Squirrels outside chasing each other instead of sitting in his class...his exams come straight from God in Hebrew..so noone gets it.
If you like to wake up at 6 am and hear his monotonic voice then this is your class. Lets just say he is the better of the two evil currently teaching this course. I liked him though and it's really a self-taught course. Make an effort and you'll pass by his scale grading.
To the obnoxious little poster below who probably is a chemistry nerd, go annoy someone else. For everyone else, avoid honeychuck at all costs, he is boring, his exams dont come from the book nor his notes but from god knows where, and he does NOT curve, don't kid yourself, there is NO curve with him.
He is the best teacher! I do not know how u can say that he is a bad teacher! i have talked to these kinda students. He gives out a 50 question packet. Make sure u do it and then go him and ask him if u got the right answer. It prepares you for his tests. Always go up to him and aks him questions. Make sure u study bith his notes and his tests.
If you think he is a push-over you're in for a rude-awakening. He knows that people think he is easy and now he is starting to make his exams harder. I've taken both him and slayden, I believe slayden is the better teacher.
avoid!
I see where people who say that he teaches one thing and tests another come from and the people who say that he is easy. If you get the concept than yeah it's easy because you can almost answer any question about the topic he gives, but if you don't get it or are slightly uncomfortable with the topic than it's going to be hard. he's an ok teacher
He is the best professor ever. All you have to do is read the book, his notes and do the 50 questions packet. His exams are not very easy but if you read through his notes, they are not that bad. He is very helpful. He gave me the best student award :) So, he rocks
His tests are hard but NOT impossible. Goes over concepts very generally in lecture so you pretty much have to teach yourself
This class is the worst. Only saving grace is multiple choice test, Klein book, and the curve since just about everyone does pretty lousy. The format of tests is completely different than how he presents material in lecture. Book chapters are ridiculously long and more complicated than the concepts themselves. Just plow through.
awful professor.
the best combination for organic chemistry is to sign up for honeychuck class and go to slayden lectures!!!! Def avoid him for the lab
Honeychuck is boring and speaks monotone, very easy to fall asleep in class. He gives very simple and general examples on notes so you think you understand but then has very hard questions on his tests. Do not rely on his notes alone or you will fail. This is a self taught course. Does curve, but didn't help me.
The worst professor at mason, stear clear of this monotoned boring man. HE DOES NOT CURVE!
he is an excellent professor. orgo is a tough subject and u have to study for it everyday! definitely go to his office and ask him tons of questions. he is always willing to help and answer any question. make sure you take notes bec they help a lot for the exams and do the 50 question packet. He curves a lot!! i would definitely recommend him!
I don't know what everyone is ****in about. He's an excellent lecturer, although he IS monotone, he does have a sense of humor and talks about real-life applications of the material. Although I agree that he's not very good as a lab instructor (I got an A in his lab, B+ in his lecture)
He's a nice guy. He's willing to help. The only people who go for help are the brown nosers in the front row. Clearly, they played smart and schmoozed with the nice guy for their nice fat A's. He has multiple choice tests. Class is difficult. Man is boring. Lecture unnecessary. Self taught class.
Okay I'm weird, I like chemistry class, HC is a good prof-taught relevant material in lecture-some humor-I suggest you study about a chapter a week and take notes when you study. 7:30am class sucks! go so you don't miss potential valuable information. Supplemental reading material=BIG help (org. chem as 2nd language), B+, not too hard of a class
not too bad. class is so hard
Don't be fool by his smile on his face!! You would think that he will help you, but he wants to avoid you as much as he can. Organic Chemistry is a hard course and his broad lectures makes it even harder!! It is a self taught course and I suggest read the book and take notes!! Tests are MC, but HARD!! Not a bad class, just NOT taught rite!!
Organic chem is not supposed to be a pain. it is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, however due to Mason's terrible professors this course can turn out 2 be a nightmare. I know people from Gtown who aced both orgos and could not answer the questions on this test. they make it hard so u repeat and give em more money.
i learned absolutely nothing, except how to draw better lightning bolts. there are so many names & shapes u have to memorize. organic chemistry shouldn't even be taught. =/
NEWS FLASH, O. chem is hard! I got about what I expected as far as the information is concerned. Dr. Honeychuck could have been more approachable, but that is the norm for this university. Almost everyone who has something derogatory to say about this professor is the type of student who is mediocre at best. Overall a good, well-taught course.
Lectures aren't that bad....attending class isn't required but it definitly helps! To get an A, go to class, read the book, and use the kline book, and review the 50 questions before exams!
This professor was absolutely horrible. I went to his office one day to ask a few questions for clarity and he rolled his eyes. Totally unapproachable and makes you feel like an idiot for asking a question. I would avoid him like the plague.
He is ridiculously hard, on the labs he takes of points for handwriting ml instead of mL in your lab notebook, his quizzes are based on his lectures which i am not in. The guy is so boring all he does it write down everything he says.
I took him for both semesters of organic chemistry and I don't see why people don't seem to like him. His teaching is very clear and he will take time to answer questions whenever you have any. NEWSFLASH: Organic Chemistry is a TOUGH class. No matter who you take it with it will be hard. Go to class/office hours and you will be fine.
monotoned and boring. Fails alot of people.
Honeychuck is completely impersonal. His lectures will put you to sleep. Don't even think about asing a question unless it is insightful above and beyond the text and or lecure. This is a weed out class for sure.
Don't bother going to class. Just read the books and you'll be fine!!! In Organic Chemistry at GMU, you pretty much just have to teach yourself.
Most confusing class ever. Doesn't tell you a damn thing about what will be on test "everything is fair game he says" stick to the Klien book, orgo is hard as hell to begin with, his exams was like taking a chinese class I had no idea what I was doin, got a B+ strictly on curve. Class average was 45% each test so curve is all you can count on.
he is great! the klein book is extremley helpful. the text book.. not so much. dont put work til last minute. just do what the klein book ssay and you will do good. His exams are easy but its even easier to make silly mistakes in them,, overall great teacher..
Great lecturer and excellent notes!
Organic is a hard class no matter who the professor is. His notes are somewhat helpful for the tests, but the key is to do the problems in the textbook and all the klein readings he tells you to do. Overall, he's not as bad as people say he is.
worthless professor.
This professor prides himself on failing as many people as he can. There is NO curve in this class so get that fantasy out of your head. He even says so on day one that he gives out as many ABCD and F's as he pleases.
7:30 am class- monotone- teaches one thing- tests on another- no curve= find another professor!
The tests have a lot of trick questions. They are not similar to his class notes, homework problems, or Klein. Instead of basic questions like in the text, his tests adds advanced elements to it. He is not helpful& unfriendly when I came to office hours. I studied really hard but still don't do well in his class. High scorers usually guess right.
I had this guy Fall of 2003. One word that best describes him: WORTHLESS! You have a 730 am class in which he draws basic mechanisms on the transparency. You read the book to supplement his "lecture". Then you get this multiple choice exam which makes NO SENSE! Robert I hope you are reading this, because you are a worthless professor!
He is hard, no way around it. But it is organic at mason and it is the weeder class. i had a TA tell me they make it hard as can be to try to limit the amount of med school applicants coming out of Mason. He is not helpful at all, he is kind of rude when you speak to him, and he is so BORING! Tests are HARD
He tells you to study everything and his exams are only 21 ?s. Hated him. Class curve dosent help unless you do well above the average without the curve. Useless man, he makes me hate orgo even though I love chemistry. Exams are pulled out of the sky. Dosent like to help people during office hours. Obnoxious little man
Exams are way too difficult for an undergrad course for many who are bio majors. I study my butt off and always end up below the average for some reason. His exams are harder than what my med&vet school friends have ever seen. HE CANT TEACH simple as that. He may be nice to some of his students but at the end of the day he is just a lousy teacher
I wish GMU would FIRE him already. He can't teach squat. His lecture notes don't teach you anything. He tells you to study 1 thing and then tests u on another. He says memorize this but it isnt on the test. He never tells u whats on the test just that you have to know everything. GMU Admins if reading, PLEASE FIRE HIM his research isn't going newhe
avoid him if possible. bad teacher period. exams are difficult. i study everyday and it still does not help my grade b/c i still get under average. there is no curve basically. he is also hard to talk to.
Honeychuck is an excellent professor that provides in depth notes. Unfortunately the other people that left him negative comments were too mentally incapable to comprehend the knowledge he was providing. Guys this is Organic chemistry it's a post grad weed-out class. I admit his exams can be very hard and tricky but if you study hard guaranteed A!
Organic chemistry is just ridiculous, I always had dreams of becoming a doctor after taking Organic chemistry 1& 2 with Honeychuck my dreams have crashed. I was a straight A student had a 3.9 GPA but ended up with a C in both of his classes which has dragged me down to a 3.6 and literally killed my self esteem The whole Chemistry department is crap
Not difficult. Honeychuck has 21 question tests, and throws maybe 3-4 interesting/more diffucult ?'s in.. the rest are straightforward. Book competence coupled with the use of practice problems is the best method of learning for this course. Very generous curve..
This class is not a guaranteed A even if you study every day. The exams he makes do not demonstrate whether you know the material but more how good of a test taker you are. For this we are paying thousands in tuition?
Dr. Honeychuck's class to my brain to places it's never been before. It is very intellectually stimulating. He is a genius and should be treated like one. Any haters are just annoying pre-meds that don't appreciate the beauty of chemistry.
Amazing man. Phenomenal professor. Study very hard, this class should NOT be taken lightly.
completely worthless
one of the worst instructors i've ever had.
I don't recommend this professor.
If you got below an A- in Chem 313 with him, do not take Chem 314 with him. It only gets harder & the average is usually higher in (~60%) in the 2nd semester. Exams are unrelated to notes or text material. DO NOT TAKE! Those who give him good reviews probably studied their a** off everyday, if you don't have time 4 that, I recommend Pant instead.
Incomprehensible
The obnoxious premeds that just want to get an "A" in the class and not really put a lot of effort hate Dr. Honeychuck. Want to know why? because he tests you down to the concept not just memorizing like a typical bio major. So to all of you premeds that don't put out and want to just slide by with an A and become doctors? GOOD LUCK ON THE MCAT.
I've read through most of these comments. It comes down to this: Dr. Honeychuck tests you on comprehension, not memorization. This is a challenging class. It is the bridge to med school. While other teachers may be easier, you will LEARN the most in Dr. Honeychuck's course. I enjoyed this class. STUDY THE 50 QUESTIONS PACKET!
Awful
If you are not going to put in the time to study and review every day, then you will not do well in any orgo class whichever professor you take. His tests are difficult and seem unrelated to the notes because they are things you haven't seen before, but if you UNDERSTAND what's going on, you'll get it. He challenges you, which is very valuable.
I went into this class knowing he was a difficult professor after taken Dr. Pant for 313. You should definitely go to class, even though Honeychuck's lectures aren't exciting. Study the assigned questions. If you can, get old tests. Those seem to help a lot too. But no, lazy pre-meds, you can't slack off in this class. Be afraid.
Guys, this is Organic Chemistry. It's a weeder class and will NEVER be easy, no matter which prof you take. That said, if you study the Klein readings like crazy, you will be prepared for Honeychuck's tests. Do the 50 questions packet too to get used to his question style. If you put the time into it (and it is time-intensive!) you will be ok.
This Prof.was not helpful at all.I asked him numerous times where I stood in his class. His reply, "Time will tell."! Most questions are NOT easy, he does NOT draw the molecules in exams, you HAVE to memories all common names in addition to IUPAC nomenclature.Make sure you know how to draw big-ass molecules(see folic acid).I do NOT recommend him.
One of the worst professors at George Mason. DOES NOT TEACH. His lectures represent at most 15% of what is on his exams. That means the rest you are on your own.
He mislead his students all the time about what to study for his exams. His exams were extremely difficult, and the average of each of the exams were 43%. Just read the textbook like crazy,. Do the 50 questions and you should be fine!! be sure to know all of the IUPAC names and the structures, he is crazy about naming things!
I've taken both 314 and 651 with Honeychuck and honestly he's one of the best chemistry professors at GMU. His lectures are easy to follow and he gives a review of what to focus on for the exam. However, you need to study the book and study it well. He won't hold your hand; he presents the basics and it's your job to take it from there.
The notes for each class were all handwritten, and explained very poorly. The tests were very hard. I learned more from the textbook than I did from the lectures.
I have taken 314, 617 and will take 613 with Dr. Honeychuck. He is one of the best professors at Mason. His lectures are crystal clear, well-structured, and the little jokes he slips in for those who are awake are priceless. But people, this is CHEMISTRY! Read the book and put in the work, he isn't there to spoon feed you the test information!
This is a 730 am course in which he speaks in monotone drawing stuff on transparency. His notes represent nothing that is on his exams and sadly neither does the book.
may god have mercy on ur soul. i am a straight A student but this guy is terrible. save yourself and do not take him. he teaches like 5% of the material that u will see on exams and u have to read every single page of the book to do remotely well. its worth skipping a semester of chem. take it later with someone else. he sucks. i miss slayden..
I have no idea how this guy is a teacher. Avoid him at all costs. He does not engage with the class and doesnt care if people are lost. If you take him I wish you the best of luck and read the book like your life depended on it
He tests on material that are not covered in lecture. About 25% of actual class material is on the tests. He gives no structures on his exam, just IUPAC names, so you will have to figure it out from there. He also writes in cursive and has no powerpoints to follow. You will almost have to pray to even get average and get curved to a C.
Worst prof ever. Tests on material not covered in class. Day before exam: "I don't have office hours until after the test, & we don't have time to cover the last 4 sections in the chapter, but you'll be tested on them anyway." I haven't missed one class, & the tests are incomprehensible. U have 2 look up mech. urself bc he doesn't cover them. 0/10.
Pay attention in his lectures! He says highlights specific items that he says will be on the exam/final as as well as what to memorize with molecules. This is a hard class, but it is straightforward with expectations. I made an A is because I paid attention, transcribed the lecture/book, did both the practice problems and 50 questions packet.
TRY NOT TO TAKE. He gives questions in class, but doesn't provide answers so you never know what the correct answer is. Two days before an exam he'll list 5 or so topics that he didn't teach you, but you have to know for the exam. Exams aren't always clear and things not studied appear. Tried to get help and he wasn't approachable.
Worst professor that I have ever had. He literally does not care about how his students are doing. Whatever is in the textbook is fair-game on the exams because he certainly will test you on things you did NOT discuss in lecture. He also cannot respond to a simple email because as I said, he does not care. Take orgo with someone else!
Read the text before going to class - helps to highlight lecture points. Attend at least two LA sessions before each exam where you can ask questions about topics he hasn't covered in class. Text problems and 50 questions packet familiarize you with structures and names.
He was by far one of the best professors at Mason. This class is not easy, its organic chemistry, but if you put in the time and effort you'll do well. His lectures are worthwhile and he is actually really funny!! Go to his office hours and he will help. His exams are not easy, but he does warn you about certain questions during the class!
Honeychuck is a great professor. Organic is difficult for some people but you're in college, it should be. The lectures covered key topics found in the book. Lectures aren't there to cover all the exam material, they are for covering key concepts to focus on. Read the book, and use alternate resources if one isn't "clicking". Definitely take him!
Organic Chemistry is hard class period. Honeychuck doesn't have lecture slides, but hand writes all the notes, so if you miss class you miss the notes for that day. He doesn't tell you when quizzes are, but if you look over your notes before the class period, it literally comes from the notes. STUDY!! Tests are only excruciatingly hard w/o studying
If you want to take a class at 730 am in which he just talks to himself for an hour and gives brutal exams hes your guy!
There is no curve in this class, don't kid yourself. His exams make absolutely zero sense. Not helpful in one bit.
A great professor! Take this guy!
I did not know that androids existed until I took Dr. Honeychuck. 5/10 would take again.
