Dr. Hummer is very knowledgeable and experienced in his field. That being said, he comes across as egotistical, especially because the readings for class are from his own unfinished book. For lectures he reads a paragraph on the slide that can be summarized in 1 sentence. Tests are manageable once you get past the grammar mistakes and odd phrasing.
Terrible professor, he talks and talks about nothing important all class long. Expects you to read like 30+ pages for every class. 5 papers worth 2 percent each, so just enough to make you work for it. Tests are completely hit or miss with information you study. The first one is all content based whereas the second one was data based, very strange.
Dr. Hummer is great. His class is not difficult if you do the readings and try on the papers. There are 5 2-page writing assignments during the semester, 3 tests and a final, the rest of the work is reading. Reading isn't very necessary though, because he goes over them in lecture. So if you go to lecture you will do fine in the class.
Dr. Hummer is really passionate, approachable, and very very knowledgeable. Sure, he expects you to read a lot of academic papers. And yes, sometimes the lectures are repetitive. But his passion for the topic is infectious and it's easy enough to get an A or A- - either do the readings or pay attention to the lectures. Would absolutely take again.
He's is incredibly knowledgable and passionate, but the work you put into the class does not equal the outcome since each exam is written by a different TA. It's impossible to know what to focus on for each exam, so you have to memorize EVERYTHING from the lectures and readings, including statistics. Plus, the lectures are pretty dry.
I took this class because it met two gen-eds at the same time, but it's ruining my GPA. The subject matter is interesting, but Robert is brutally dull. He goes on tangents about nothing and his lectures aren't helpful. The readings are about 50 pages each night and the tests are easy sloppy and confusing. If you want to suffer, take this class.
The content of the class is relatively easy but the exams are made more difficult than necessary with questions that are intended to trick you. The papers assigned throughout the semester are also pointless because they count for only 10% of your grade combined with 5 papers. He makes it almost impossible to get an A.
Love this class! The lectures basically go over the reading so if you do both you're solid. Tests are easy and the workload is manageable. He is super passionate about the material and it was SO INTERESTING.
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. He is so passionate about what he teaches and what he teaches is super important. He helped me pick my major and he cares about his students.
I love this class! Dr. Hummer knows so much about population health. He is so passionate about the subject, and he really cares about his students. He is always available to meet outside of class. This class helped me figure out my major. If you do the reading, it isn't hard to get an A. Definitely my favorite class this semester!
Dr. Hummer is so passionate about population health and about the success of his students. The lectures may be long, but they are so interesting. There is a lot of reading assigned, but the lectures very accurately summarize the readings, so you're fine without reading them. I am so lucky that I had the chance to learn from a pioneer in this field!
Dr. Hummer is the best. He is very knowledgable about his field, cares about his students and while lecture can be kinda dull sometimes, he does his best to make it interesting. The tests are not hard if you go to lecture and pay attention, and the writing assignments cleverly force you to interact with the reading. Love this class and Dr. Hummer!
I absolutely love Dr. Hummer and Soci 172 is one of the most interesting classes I have taken. Dr. Hummer is incredibly knowledgeable and it isn't difficult to get an A in this course. That being said, the lectures are long. As long as you take notes and pay attention you will do well. I find that you don't need to do the readings to be successful
I took this class because it seemed like the most interesting to fulfill my US credit. Definitely an interesting class but there is a lot of reading that takes a really long time - expect about 2 hours of reading per class if you read it carefully. Reading is necessary to do well on the exams but his lectures go over the readings briefly as well.
Professor Hummer was great. He is really passionate and you can tell that he is extremely knowledgeable about his field. The course is reading-heavy but if you listen in class and do the readings, you will be fine. I learned a lot.
Dr. Hummer is very knowledgable and passionate about this subject. He tries to make it interesting but there is a lot of reading for each class. Attendance is taken every single class period, so show up and take it all in because you need to know it for the test. He could talk for days about the subject and what he says will be on the tests.
Your only grades in the entire class are 3 midterms and the final. Dr. Hummer is my favorite professor so far here at UNC. He is very nice and clearly tells you how to prepare for his exams. This class is very interesting, although sometimes lectures can be a bit dry. Take this class!
Great choice for your US Diversity Gen Ed. Only grades are three midterms, a final, and attendance. No course work, and no textbook. Attendance is very strict though, so go to class. Course content is interesting, and Hummer is pretty intelligent. He outlines what will be on the tests, but it's difficult to get a full A if you do bad on one test.
I really enjoyed Dr. Hummer's class and teaching style, although sometimes lectures were a bit repetitive and/or boring. He is very passionate about his research and he truly wants students to learn about interesting trends in population health! Some aspects of the class were a bit more liberally biased, but I enjoyed it overall!
Dr. Hummer is an amazing professor! He really cares about the subject. I took his class because it filled a requirement, but it actually made me want to go into the field of population health/demography. Dr. Hummer himself is really smart, nice, and he was kinda funny. Highly recommend taking the course. It's not very hard and really interesting.
Dr. Hummer is a wonderful professor, I would highly recommend him. He cares extremely about the topic, especially population health, so much so that I will now be minoring in health and society.
Dr. Hummer is an AMAZING professor. Would highly recommend for anyone interested in pre-health. He genuinely cares about teaching students the material and is passionate about the population health. Lectures are informative and eye-opening. Class is clear; 3 midterms and he outlines what will be tested.
Even though there are only a few grades in this class, everything is very fair and relatively easy. The material is super interesting and you can tell he is passionate in his lectures. Sometimes they aren't the most fun but usually he's talking about super interesting and relevant stuff.
To be honest this is the most boring class I have ever taken, lots about income inequality and racial disparities among population health. I did the readings for the first half but they were pointless because I didn't remember anything because they were so boring. Dr. Hummer is very passionate about the subject and seems like a great guy.
Dr. Hummer is such a kind person. He is so passionate about disparities within population health. He talks about inequalities in all aspects, which is nice to see in a professor at UNC. He wrote the book you read. I don't do the readings because he goes over everything in class. I would recommend him 100%. The class is also very interesting.
Do not make the mistake I did and take this class, all the reviews say it is easy but do not be fooled. Lectures are incredibly boring and tests are incredibly hard. Tons of information and little details that have to be memorized. If you are interested in this stuff you will enjoy the class but if you are taking for an easy class, this is not it!
I loved Dr. Hummer and this class!!! I learned a lot and it was super interesting. There is a good bit of reading, but you don't really need to take notes on it. The best ways to prepare for the exams were his study guides, lecture PowerPoints, rereading the textbook, and having a general idea of what the other readings are about. Love that man.
Hummer is amazing and truly one of UNC's best. He is dedicated to his work in Population Health and it made the class so interesting! I loved my time in this class. I wanted an easy A but ended up with a B+. His tests can be hard (multiple choice) and there are a lot of readings. He wrote the textbook and assigns academic papers to read. Worth it!
Dr. Hummer is passionate and knowledgable. The information is fascinating and coming to class and paying attention gets you 70% of the way. Before a test you should skim the textbook and reread the slides. There is a lot of material and you cannot miss a lot to maintain an A. Not an easy A, but also not a hard A. Inspired me to add a minor in this.
Dr. Hummer is a professor that I would love to have for a class again. If you read the material and show up to lecture, it is very easy to do well in the class. He genuinely cares about how his students are doing. I would highly recommend taking any of his classes, especially SOCI 172.
Dr. Hummer is great! It was really cool to be taught by a leader in this field. Most lectures were very interesting and offered a new perspective on this subject. Definitely a good choice for a gen ed class-- not hard if you pay attention in class and review slides before tests. Tests are all multiple choice and not meant to be super difficult.
He is a nice guy, but you basically are only graded on tests and occasional group work. I read/skimmed all of the book and always completed the study guides days before exams. I only did well on 1. I got an 89 and low 70's on the other three tests. His class is do-able, but it just wasn't the right fit for me, I struggled and I generally do well.
Professor Hummer was a very passionate and kind professor. He truly enjoyed what he did but he would read off of the ppts which would make class very boring. If you are on top of your readings and pay attention in class you should be fine.
Great opportunity to learn from a prominent figure in the population health field. He is a super nice, approachable professor who genuinely cares about his students learning. If you are interested in the subject, his lectures are enjoyable and he supplements with videos and other articles. Grade based on two tests, group work, and a final exam.
Dr. Hummer is an incredible professor. His syllabus seemed intimidating but he's super caring and lenient. He's a professional in the field and extremely knowledgeable. We were graded on two exams and a final, and he avoids any trick questions. You're also graded on daily group work which is an easy A if you follow the directions. Take this class!
No complaints about SOCI172. It was cool to be taught by an expert in the field and it's clear he's really passionate about the material. The exams were pretty easy and all the material was in the Powerpoints and textbook. Lectures could sometimes get a bit boring, but I'd imagine it'd be better in-person vs Zoom.
I enjoyed my time in SOCI 172 because of Hummer! He is very knowledgable in his field and understands that there is an issue with population health in America. There is a clear grading system and you can follow it or not, but it is not too difficult to follow and receive an A. The tests were somewhat difficult but everything was in his notes.
Amazing lectures and an incredible professor. Not only is he incredibly kind, he genuinely cares about his students and wants students to do well on exams (no trick questions, open note exams). Helped students who were stressed about COVID and truly changed the way I looked at public health. Might try to get my MPH because of this man!
I recommend this class to everyone! Dr. Hummer is absolutely amazing and this class is an easy A if you come to class every day (there is always a graded group assignment). The midterms were all multiple choice and the final was collaborative. So easy to do well, such an easy grader, and super interesting material. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Professor Hummer truly cares about his students. In my experience with an online class, he showed this day in and day out with the dedication that he put into making this course interesting. Professor Hummer offered fairly easy grading with 40% of your grade being based on group work assignments.
I would recommend this class to just about anyone. Almost all of the final grade comes from the exams, but they aren't too hard. Professor Hummer gives out study guides (a list of terms) before each exam and as long as you make sure you know those terms, the multiple-choice exams are an easy A. Hummer is great and even bought our class ice cream.
I haven't finished Dr. Hummer's class but he is an amazing professor. He is passionate about this topic and always makes sure students are interested. The class relies on 4 tests but he provides a study guide with a list of terms. The tests haven't been that difficult and it's definitely easy to get good grades.
Take SOCI 172 with Hummer. He is such a sweet man and wants you to succeed. He provides you with a study guide before each of the 4 multiple choice tests. There are no trick questions and he posts his slides. Such an interesting class and a kind prof.
This class is very straight forward, no grades other than exams and no extra credit. However, exams are super easy and he often gives funny ?s for easy points. He really cares about his students and actually inspired me to add a sociology major. Could not recommend this man more, I only wish he taught more classes.
Dr. Hummer is a king and I absolutely adored this class. I learned so much and became really invested in the topic due to his excellent instruction and low stress classroom. He is so brilliant yet humble and caring, it was such a joy to learn from him. Highly highly recommend SOCI 172 with him!
final grade is 4 tests, everything on them comes directly out of his own book and participation isn't required. literally the easiest class to take for this gen-ed, just skim the readings and memorize the vocab he gives before each exam
Hands down the best professor at UNC. So renowned and respected, yet down to earth and relatable. Genuinely cares about his students and how they engage with subject matter (which is genuinely interesting). The grade is off of four tests, but read and study what he tells you to and you will be fine. I could not recommend a professor or class more!!
Dr. Hummer really cares for his students and wants everyone to succeed. The only grades in class are the exams but the exams are not difficult. They were all multiple choice and he gives you a study guide and exam questions before every exam. If you show up to class, you don't really need to study. Highly recommend, the class is super interesting!
Though this class only consists of 4 tests, Dr. Hummer is an amazing lecturer and is extremely passionate about the subject material. He makes his course simple and interesting and the tests are extremely straight forward as long as you listen to the lectures - which he records. Highly, HIGHLY recommend taking this course.
Graded on 3 midterms and the final, each 25% of the grade and 50 MC questions. Lectures reflected the reading and were only boring because he has a very monotonous voice. If you read his book as assigned (not hard) and go to lectures, you should do fine in this course. Definitely sparked my interest in SOCI, and now I'm minoring in health&society!
Your grade is determined by four exams. The exams are really easy though, and he gives sample questions and potential test topics. He's a very knowledgeable, passionate, and enthusiastic person when it comes to Public Health.
Professor Hummer is the kindest professor I have had at UNC, and his lectures are both interesting and easy to follow. Your whole grade is 4 exams, but the exams are incredibly simple with lots of gimme questions. I highly recommend taking this course!
Hummer is very nice but can be boring at times as he is passionate and likes to ramble. Graded by 4 test but if u read his book and look over the slides/study guides he gives you then you will be fine.
Dr. Hummer designed the readings with students in mind, so the readings were very informative, yet only took 15 minutes at most to go through. While class does get boring at times, the exams are probably the most straightforward and forgiving I've had in my entire life. I'm now minoring in Health and Society. Highly recommended as a gen ed!
Easiest class I have ever taken in my life. Requires 0 attendance, but Dr. Hummer is super sweet so you should go anyway. Exams are the only grade and are incredibly straightforward and easy.
Dr Hummer is very knowledgeable in his field and cares a lot about his students. Class is very easy, graded on 3 multiple choice exams and final. He puts lots of gimme questions in the exam and posts a study guide. No assignments and you don't really need to do the reading either. If you have a tough schedule and need an easy A gen ed this is it!
Dr. Hummer was great! Lectures were recorded, no participation, lecture content was interesting. Only grades are the tests, so as long as you do a bit of studying with the study guide, you should be all set. Most of it is pretty self-explanatory. Readings aren't mandatory but were helpful in knowing test content.
Robert was so adorable, every class he would tell us about his dog, whom he named B- (he gives you the back story lol). He is super passionate about public health and REALLY respected in the field so it was a cool opportunity to learn from him. The grade is made up of only four exams, which seems scary but he gives you a study guide for each exam.
fantastic prof and makes the class super easy but also very informational
Amazing Professor! Very stress-free and no homework! Just three easy exams and he helps you prepare for them! I've learned a lot just by attending his lectures but attendance isn't required. He's very passionate about his work and it's appreciated. One of my favorite professors for sure!
Dr. Hummer is such a sweetheart! His lectures are engaging, and he made me more interested in the content than I already was. The class is based on 3 tests and a final, but the questions are easy as long as you pay attention in class and give the readings a brief skim! He and the TAs are very understanding in regards to making up exams.
Great class. Final grade is based on 3 easy exams. As long as you pay attention and have some kind of common sense you'll be fine.
Robert Hummer is an amazing guy and the course is not difficult at all. Make sure to do the study guides because every term you see on the study guide will be on the exam! This class was quite easy and very insightful. Take this class!!!!
I love this man; he is clearly passionate about population health and is very caring. I would definitely take his class again.
Great class and a great professor!
Could not recommend this class more. Graded by 3 tests and a final. Test are easy if you pay attention in class and complete the study guides. He looks at your improvement in the class and decides your final grade himself.
Easiest class I've taken here. You are graded on 4 exams that honestly you could get an A in without having gone to class. I skipped every class, used online quizlets to study and got an A. Despite this, I still learned a ton because of how he formats the exams (he makes the right answer obvious so you learn as youre taking the test.
Professor Hummer is the sweetest human to walk the Earth. His class is based on four exams, and if you use the study guides provided, you will do well. He truly cares about his students and is super passionate about what he teaches. He is very knowledgable, and you honestly learn a lot via readings, lectures, and exams. Amazing guy!
100% of your grade is composed of exams, but they are extremely easy. I think you could get by with an A on the exams by just guessing. If you listen to his lectures, which he records, you're good to go. You don't really need to do the readings. Attendance wasn't required and since the slides were uploaded and class was recorded, it was nice.
Dr. Hummer is a fantastic teacher! Your grade is dependent on the tests, but they're multiple choice and fairly easy.If you show up and listen, then you'll do fine on the tests! Couldn't recommend more :)
The BEST professor at UNC hands down. Dr. Hummer is considerate, passionate, and incredibly knowledgeable about population health. The grade is 4 exams and 2 essays only, though both are extremely easy if you just pay mild attention in class. Classes are recorded and he is very accommodating about missing exams. Could not recommend him more!
Dr.Hummer is so smart- he truly knows all the content and teaches it in an easy way to understand. Highly recommend taking this class. Although it was only graded on a few things, the tests were easy as long as you listened in class and did the study guide. He cares about his students and truly wants them to succeed in class but also in life.
Dr. Hummer was a great professor with easy exams! Definitely recommend if you need an easy course. 3 exams plus a final that is exactly the study guide he gives. Class isn't mandatory and he records lectures/uploads slides. Would 100% recommend.
Great way to knock out your POWER focus capacity. Lectures could be bland at times but audio and slides were posted for every lecture. Exams were super easy with very obvious answers. As long as you review for 30 minutes before the exams, you will ace this class. Dr. Hummer is super sweet and wants to make his class as fun as possible.
Dr. Hummer is the sweetest man ever and so humble. I don't think students realize how big of a deal he is in the sociology world and his daughter (now Dr. Holly Hummer) is getting her degree in soci at Harvard. Tests are not hard, lectures are long and kinda boring, but it's fine, two reflection essays graded by TAs that are easy.
Dr. Hummer has been the best professor I've had at UNC so far! He genuinely cares about his students and isn't out to trick you. His tests/papers are super straightforward and easy to get A's on if you just review the lecture notes. Both attendance and reading weren't "required" and honestly, you could skip every class and still get an A.
Definitely a GPA booster class, I almost never went to class but I learnt all the stuff from his ppt. For the final exam, he gave you half of questions for free(Some were repeated questions in the midterm, some were sample questions) Don't hesitate to take it.
Super easy A, Dr. Hummer is really sweet and genuinely wants you to pass. 2 reflection essays are graded super easily by TAs and exam questions are very straightforward. If you review an hour before the exams and use common sense, you'll get an A.
Take Dr. Hummer!! His tests are easy and he cares about his students succeeding while also learning the material. As long as you do quizlets you can receive an A easily.
Really seems to care about his students and his research. Do well on every test because you are graded by a point system. Can't really tell if he rounds, but I ended with 1 single point less than the cutoff for an A and he rounded. Amazing person. Totally recommend for a good intro into medical sociology!
Dr. Hummer is one of the best professors I've had at UNC! His lectures were not mandatory but I recommend going to them if you have time because he has a lot of insight to share that is not on his slides. I did not have to do any of the readings and I still did well. I recommend knocking out you power focus capacity with this course. Super easy.
Dr Hummer is as knowledgeable as it gets since he wrote the textbook, and his class is incredibly low stress. Such a privilege to learn from him, despite lectures being sometimes boring. Only graded by attendance (you get 100 even if you miss 3!) and exams. Study for an hour before to easily get an A, he often makes the right answers obvious!
Dr. Hummer is an angel on this earth. He is too good for this world. By far the sweetest, most caring professor I have ever had. Everything is straightforward and easy to understand. What a pleasure it is to be taught by him
Folks I'm telling y'all Hummer is not only the best professor in the world but also one the most knowledgeable, caring, and inspirational person on earth! He's very famous in his field, don't forget to take advantage of that. He's an extremely busy man but still always willing to help his students. Class's easy as it gets!
I highly recommend this class as an easy gen ed or elective. No assignments, only reading and 3 midterm exams. The tests are very straightforward and Professor Hummer helps to make sure the answers are very obvious. Attendance is mandatory but you get two skips.
Easiest gen ed ever. Your grade is based on mandatory attendance, midterms, and a final. There are 3 midterm exams with ~60 multiple choice questions, and the answers are VERY obvious and straightforward. I usually hate classes with required attendance but this class was 100% worth waking up at 7am for. Take his classes!!!!!
only grades were exams that you could not study for. For reference I haven't studied a second for this class and got 98 or 100 on all the exams. Go to class and it's actually pretty interesting as well. Definitely take this class though.
The best prof I've had at UNC. Lectures are only boring if you don't care about the material. Hummer is mega famous in his field and has wisdom to share. He also happens to be the most humble, kindest professor there is. Exams were a total breeze. I switched into H&S minor because of Hummer. King if ur seeing this ILY. He is truly the best guy ever
Hummer is so sweet, and his class is super easy. His lectures were boring at time, but the exams are very easy and the course content is something everybody should learn.
The best professor I have had at UNC. Shows such a passion for the information he is teaching, and is always accessible outside of class. Very understanding and well-educated. I wish he could teach all of my classes. The course material was very important and also understandable. Tests count for a lot, but you should have no problem if you review!
He's the BEST!! Lecture attendance is mandatory now unlike previous semesters, but you get 3 skips. The tests require next to no prep and the content is really interesting. So so glad I got to take this class, which is saying something because I HATE 8ams!
Dr. Hummer was an amazing professor -- passionate about the subject, knowledgeable, and kind. The class was very easy, only graded by three midterms, a final, and lecture attendance.
Attend class and study information a day before the exam or so and you will do well! some lectures are cool topics while others can be boring but overall a great course to open your eyes to U.S population health!
This man is the father I never had. Gonna miss him so much.
Professor Hummer is an amazing, kind, and caring individual. His lectures were very straightforward and informative. Your grade is determined by 3 midterms, a final, and attendance. If you come to class, pay attention, and study terms (listed on his study guide) before his exams, you will do just fine. Highly recommend taking SOCI172 with Hummer!
Dr. Hummer is an incredible professor, and this course was very interesting! The test are fairly easy as long as you review using the study guide. I learned so much from this course, and I would definitely recommend!!!
Super nice Professor, he tossed ice cream during our 8am lecture and I caught one. Class only consists of 3 exams and a final exam so do well on those. I kept getting high Cs on them but thats on me studying so last minute. The final exam was a breeze though since it was based on past midterms. I would study the slides and quizlets.
This class was a required attendance 8am... and I looked forward to when I woke up!!! I'm by no means a morning person -- so I can't say that about any 8am I've ever taken. Exams were incredibly simple as long as you go over the slides.
Lectures are boring asl, but the tests are very easy. Too many quizlet resources and powerpoints to study off of to pass.
he was awesome. does do the check in app but the class was very interesting and tests were straightforward.
