Bio 1 is a hard class no matter what teacher you have. Show up for class and complete his slides and exam study guides and you'll do fine.
attendance is mandatory to pass . quizzes weekly , labs every class , 60 slide powerpoints every class . most boring & horrible class ever . if you dont study everything he says , you'll fail .
Bio I is hard regardless of the professor. If go to class, pay attention, and spend time outside of class studying you will do fine. He is very willing to help anyone who asks.
He's a great teacher! Easier than other biology teachers, pay alot of attention to slides and labs.
Humphries is a great professor. His powerpoints(notes) are very specific and all the material on the tests can be found on them. Biology is a very hard course and is recommended for only science majors. Your grade at the end of this class will only be a reflection of your studying because professor humphries give you everything you need to pass
I really liked Professor Humphries. He fit my learning style really well, using goofy pictures and sayings to remember hard topics. His powerponits are great and you prbably won't need a book. (my class was co-taught and I did use the book for the other professor)
Professor Humphries was a great teacher, Biology is a hard subject for some but he is always there to help. I would definitely recommend him for any one i know taking BSC 1010 but you will still have to study a lot to get a good grade. Studying is a must in any biology class though.
Very, very hard class. Study a lot! We had Professor Humphries the first half and Professor Palmtag the second half. It was like two separate very difficult classes!
He is a great professor! His notes are very helpful when it comes to studying for test. He also give out a review/jeopardy which some of the questions come from. Biology is a tough class so if you read the book and come to class prepared you will surely pass. This class was taught by two teachers, Humphries being one of them and the other one Palmt
Humphries is a very nice professor. Biology is a hard class so you have to be willing to study. Lecture notes are very helpful for exams as well as the review questions. You have to read the book if you want to do good. Overall if you put forth the effort you will pass.
This professor was ok, not the best BIO1 teacher in the world, but if you study hard on your own and put forth the effort you can end up with a good grade. He was not to strict and curved the tests to help us out. I studied hard and got an A+ ok teacher overall if no better choice available take Humphries!
he gives good study guides for each chapter, and explains everything thoroughly.
Dr Humphries is an OK prof. His powerpts are very lengthy often times when reading them he gets side tracked with pictures. He doesn't use the book at all for class. Gives out notes, study guide & prac test questions but rewords EVERYTHING on tests. I study for days upon days & sometimes isn't good enough, BUT biology is tough subject.
Humphries is a great professor his lectures are very helpful and clear. He uses power points and the exams are based off of that. I got an A in the class just by studying the notes and the book. Biology is not an easy course, but if you study hard then you'll be fine.
Fairly clear & very interesting. Everything is easy, but for the exams you really need to buckle down and REVIEW! He has online reviews which actually tie down everything you learn in the lecture. Use the reviews for the exam or you will be screwed!
Very nice guy, very good at prodiving real life examples. straight forward about the course, but dont be scared away. the exams are straight from the studyguides on angel, the powerpoints, and review questions. reading the book can help, but not really needed. def reccomend him !!!make sure u attend class though
Humpries is not that great of a professor, he was rude everytime I had questions, I had awesome grades on the labs and daily activities but then didn't do so hot on his exams and that screwed me over. His exams are nothing like his notes. Herman on the other hand was more helpful when it came to questions or anything..
Great professor! His exams are only based on the slides he gives you in class, his lab quizzes are easy, and his daily activities are easy too. We didn't use the textbook once. I do recommend studying A LOT for this class! My final grade for this class was a B+. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HIM!
Loved this class! A lot of studying to get an A but its possible. He's super nice and the TA's are very helpful. Dont leave class early, and really take in what he's teaching. Never used the book. Powerpoints were all you need to study for the tests and the study guide is very clear. Would highly reccomend this teacher!
nice guy, works well with freshman; understands ur only there for a grade. He makes Bio I about as easy as it could be.
His tests were pretty hard. I had to study my butt off to get good grades, and there was SO much memorization. The tests were the hardest thing though, because all the labs and homework were a piece of cake. Lectures were boring, he's kind of an average professor.
Nice guy, but horrible teacher. Mostly rambles on and basically expects you to automatically know the material. Very difficult class and he doesnt seem to care whether you pass or fail. I dont recommend.
Great professor! Keeps students involved through his use of power point slides. Uses power points to highlight the important concepts in the textbook & will add in some info/fun facts to stimulate interest. Students who study the PowerPoints will be well prepared for exams. Labs are well organised & Dr. Humhpries manages class time efficiently.
Great teacher. I actually like biology now. it was a hard class with a lot of information but he uses extremely helpful power points and gives study guides for the tests. I did all the study guides and got high Bs and As on his test. They take a while to do but its worth it if you want a high grade.
Regardless of the teacher, this class has a 50% pass rate. It's a lot of studying. He's one of the best teachers for this course. He can be a bit dry at times but for the most part tries to make it interesting. I truly enjoyed this class, but be warned- you have to study almost every day. I would definitely take this teacher again.
His lectures were extremely boring but his powerpoints helped by putting ideas more straight forward and once in awhile, he'd slip in a funny slide or interesting topic. Start off strong with the first test and you'll have less worries. The review he provides for the final helps but only covers about 80% of what you have to know.
Such a great professor! Very intelligent and helpful. His powerpoints provided a lot of imformation and were well organized. The tests were long but aslong as you pay attention and study you'll pass. I probably wouldn't have done so well if I had taken someone else. I Highly Recommend him.
Dr. Humphries is a very smart man, but it sometimes felt as thought he expected everyone to already know certain things about Biology. His power-points are very helpful when you are studying. He is also very willing to meet with you about any concerns during office hours. Just Be prepared to work very hard!
Humphries is a fantastic lecturer. His powerpoints are the best makes it easy to follow and study off. You actually learn in his class. Highly recommend !!!!!!!!
He expects students to already know the material before taking the class and he is rude to students when they need help understanding something. Too many students drop or fail this class and he doesn't seem to care. His exams are nothing like the material covered in his lectures.
He is a great teacher and I love his powerpoints! They make it way easier to learn. The only thing that I don't really like is that he expects you to know everything and his tests don't really cover what's in the notes. You can pass but you better study a lot.
the class can be hard but he provides really helpful lecture notes
Humphries definitely loves biology and the subject matter but getting help is extremely difficult. If it weren't for the SI's and Study sessions by the TA's, I definitely would not have passed this course. Expect to go to them to pass.
each class you go over a powerpoint and fill in the blanks along with his. he talks the majority of the time and then usually theres a lab, which are easy. lab quizzes for most labs, not too bad. attendance isn't mandatory but he does daily activities which are worth a few points. tests are hard, of course. best bio teacher to take!
Biology is a hard course but he made it easy to understand and was very clear. Yes, I still had to study but he was a great professor. I am very glad I took biology with him. I would recommend him!! Take his class!
He is a GREAT professor! When I registered for this class I had no idea who my professor would be, but I got so lucky with him! I bought a book for this class and opened it no more that 3 times! He provides great lecture notes and ppt slides and always has a final review with questions from the actual exam! you have to study and he's very helpful
He's an alright professor. Has great power points and study guides. I never personally used the textbook. Use the study guide, jeopardy review and pay attention in class. You'll be just fine
No, he does not expect you to know everything about bio on day 1. He expects you to pay attention, read and take notes. It's college people- hello... YEAH, he's AWESOME!!! Just pay attention, take notes (he lets you record like I did if you ask, it helps) and you'll do great. And he IS helpful if you ask! He tries hard 4 u 2 succeed :) RECOMMENDED!
If you want to build a good foundation in biology, take his class. He is very organized and he always takes his time to sort out very confusing matters. Just follow his advice and you should be in good shape. He is very nice and gentle with his students. He teaches the class in a student level approach. Highly recommended!
Biology is a tough class, regardless of who your professor is you HAVE to study! I dropped bio fall semester and retook it in spring. Humphries' study guides helped a lot for his exams and we barely used the book. His power points help to outline the important topics of each chapter. I got an A in his class, he was also very helpful.
Took this class the fall semester with Palmtag and failed, passed with Humphries. He was very helpful and went over every test with me. Study guide, sample questions, and jeopardy questions are word for word the tests and the final is old test questions. You just have to pay attention !
Humphries is a good Bio teacher. He is a little boring at times and sometimes contradicts himself, but honestly, if you show up to class and take notes from the powerpoints and do well on the quizzes, it's an easy A. The tests are 100% multiple choice. He is always available for help and has many TAs.
Professor Humphries is a great professor. He adds some cheesy humor to his lecture and I think it's pretty funny. He tests directly from the notes and clarifies all the information he provides. He's very available during office hours and is open to any questions about the material. He's one of the professors that wants to see you pass.
Probably the easiest Biology Professor at FGCU considering that Biology is naturally a hard class. The test are long but always have extra credit at the end. He gives you a sample test, study guides from each chapter and a review jeopardy game. You must show up to class for Labs and daily activities and to understand the notes. jus put in the work
Awesome professor!! He talks down to you at times if you ask dumb questions, so just don't ask stupid questions. His test are long but if you put in the effort and study you will be fine. I used flashcards nonstop, because there is a lot of vocabulary. But everything on the tests are in the slideshows. His humor is definitely under appreciated!
Humphries is probably the best biology teacher at FGCU. His lectures may be very long, but he really helps you get ready for the tests. Make sure you attend his classes because he does participation grades.
SI helps a lot! At least 10 extra credit points on each test! I did not use the textbook at all! Need to be there to do the daily activity and lab worksheets! The tests are about 80 multiple choice and 20 points worth of short answer. Received grades pretty quickly. Remember to do the canvas quizzes! He drops lowest two! Final is past test ?s!!!
Lectures are very long and very easy to zone out. Following along and taking notes were all I needed to pass with very minimal effort. You get a grade every single class of some kind, that's how he enforces attendance. Labs felt like a complete waste of time, but they equal another relatively easy grade almost every class. Funny teacher though!
Humphries is a great biology teacher. I was extremely nervous going in to this class just make sure to study hard, take more notes than are required, and attend the SI sessions, they help so so so much. there are 5 tests including the final. Each test is around 80 questions with about 5 essay questions and 1-2 bonus. I got a 99.8 in this class
He definitely doesn't make the class easy. He's there for you when you need help but is confusing and contradicting during his lectures. Studying from lecture power points and study questions didn't help much. You have to teach a lot of the material to yourself so go to a lot of tutoring.
Professor Humphries is a great professor! Gives lots of quizzes, tests, & in class assignments so its easy to keep your grade up! Gives a lot of material to prepare you for tests like jeopardy, study guides & example questions all online. During class he has you fill in power points to keep your attention & keep you involved! Best bio professor!
Humphries is a great professor but biology is generally a hard class. This is my 2nd time taking bio so it's not my forte. I put in many many hours of studying and I have a 70% which I am trying to hold on to, but many people have A's. It's one of those subjects that you get or don't get. But Humphries does everything in his power to help you pass.
Very helpful. took Bio 1 with a different professor and recieved a C- and started to dislike biology then i took it with humphroes and he changed my mind completely. Love him, EXTREMELY willing to help and very interesting. taking more bio classes with him next semester.
Despite the tags I chose, it is the class that is difficult, not the professor. Humphries is a great professor with a sense of humor. His lectures are longthorough, but all of his tests are built off of his lectures. At the end of the year he will bump up your final grade if you participated. Would type an essay on how awesome he is, if I could.
Amazing professor. Helpful, funny, knowledgeable. Tests are tough (4 Unit, 1 cumulative final), critical thinking is needed. Book was hardly used, if you study his lectures, you will be fine. Going to class is a must. No homework other than lab quizzes online. Long lectures but necessary. Drops a lab quiz, doesn't drop tests. Would take again! LOVE
This is a weed-out class. If you are a dedicated Bio major, you'll do fine. You must come to class, read, do the labs, and study. If you put your time in, you can pass this class. If you're NOT a Bio major, STAY AWAY
His lectures are long and he doesn't even talk about the actual material for the first 30 minutes of class. He will go off and random subjects for no reason and it's easy to lose interest in his lectures. Terrible teacher and definitely would not take again.
Humphries is amazing, he has 5 tests (4 unit and 1 final cumulative) You don't need the book since all of his tests are on the powerpoints. I havent even cracked open my book and I have a B+ in the class. He curves exams for example our 1st exam he curved it by 9% and the second by 12%. Very helpful if you ask questions. I recommend him.
Prof. Humphries is a very good professor and if you want to pass bio then it is pretty much up to you to study. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!!! He will give you really good feedback on how to do better on tests.
He is an amazing professor. He helped me fall in love with biology. He is extremely helpful!
AWFUL Professor! Doesn't pronounce scientific names correctly. Most of his lectures have nothing to do with what your learning. However the subject material is fairly easy enough to teach to yourself. So you can easily pass this class as long as you can teach yourself. Must attend class to get credit for homework assignments
Watch out because during lectures he wears a microphone and clears his throat a ridiculous amount so loud that China can hear him from that damn microphone
The lectures and the tests don't exactly go hand in hand, so be sure to study a lot. He's a very nice guy and a cool professor, but he has assignments due every class which is a pain.
Never had a problem with this professor. Lectures can get a bit long, but most of the material is pretty interesting. Attendance is not mandatory but you will definitely do very well if you come to each class.
Bio 1 is a tough class to pass no matter the professor, but Humphries really does give you all the tools to be successful in the class. All of his exams are based off fill-in PowerPoints, which you have to be in class for and there is a lab basically every class so attendance is a major key. He really cares about students and wants them to succeed.
People who don't do well in his class just don't apply themselves enough. He literally gives you all the tools you need to study, it's up to you to show up, do labs, and commit yourself to the material. Every bio class is hard but he is an amazing professor and is very good at making the material interesting. Also bumped grades at the end!
Awesome instructor. Dry humor. Lectures are a bit rough - death by power point - but skeleton notes are helpful. Really cares about students, even though some have a hard time noticing that about him. Final is made up of questions from unit exams.
Solid professor. Gives good study materials, like study guides for each chapter way ahead of the exam. Go to office hours to review questions missed on exams and GO TO SI. It will help of you actually pay attention and try.
His tests are extremely easy. I have never gotten anything below a 95%. He curves most of them, and he offers extra/bonus questions on every test. If you attend lectures, you should be fine. Most of his short answer responses come from the daily activities, which he gives you the answers to. I highly recommend attending SI sessions.
TAKE HIM!!!! He is such a great professor and really cares about how you do! He gives extra credit on every exam and curves it!! HIs power points are easy to follow and he gives fill in the blank ones so that you pay attention to what he is saying! Also gives jeopardy, study guides for each chapter, and sample questions to study before the tests!
Amazing professor. He gives you everything you need to get an A on his tests and in his class. His lectures are super interesting, and he makes the material very easy to learn and understand.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't the easiest class to take regardless. It's a lot of material to cover, but prof humphries wasn't my favorite. Tries to trick you on tests, as if the material isn't tough enough already.. and A is very attainable and possible, just a lot of studying
Lectures were long, but clear. Tried to be funny, but wasn't. Tests are hard, but if you study you'll pass. Pay attention in class and do your best on the lab assignments and you'll pass. Weekly quizzes are easy, most answers are online.
Prof. Humphries is a smart man! Go to his office hours! The final is composed of past tests which he will allow you to review in his office hours. I got a 94% on the final because I attended his office hours. 4 exams, a lab quiz every week, daily activities/lab credit + a final make up your final grade. Go to class and study; it's crucial!
Humphries was by far one of the best bio teachers FGCU has! He gives a ton of reviews to help study for his tests, and he even gives practice exams that have questions on the actual test. And, as long as you study the power points, his tests are easy.
In general, Biology is a very difficult class so you have to work hard regardless of the professor. Humphries has dry humor in all of his power points, which helps a bit with the deathly boring power points. He gives good feedback quickly with all of the labs, and is easy to find outside of class. Go to class and study A LOT and you'll get an A.
Bio can be a difficult class although I would say Humphries is the best bio professor on campus. He tries his best to make the information clear to students with videos, powerpoints, and classwork. Overall a quality professor
Second time retaking the class and I wish I took him the first time. His lectures are interactive and his jokes are corny but great. He goes off topic at times but thats just so you're not sitting through a lecture the whole time. Study the lecture slides and you'll do great on the exams! He really makes sure you understand the concepts. I love him
AMAZING! he is the best bio teacher ever! I had sanders first semester and got a 60.. took humphries and i have an 85! very helpful and makes the material easy to understand. gives you a lot to study from. Study from the powerpoints, studyguides, jeapordy games, and khaoot and you will pass. he puts a curves on his tests and give u bonus questions.
He's a good bio professor but his tests are crazy!
Professor Humphries is a great biology professor. I recommend him to all my friends taking bio. He gives you powerpoint, notes, worksheets, and extra materials, so you really learn and understand the materials. I really enjoyed his class, and it was a 3 hour 7:30 bio class... so that says something.
Professor Humphries is one of the reasons I passed Biology! He is an amazing professor who is willing to work with you if you take the class seriously. Everything you need is in the powerpoints! I also recommend going to SI sessions for this class. Biology is a tough class but Professor Humphries gives you what you need to pass the class!!
I loved having Prof. Humphries. He always puts something funny up on his powerpoint. All his lecture is is powerpoint, and he practically makes notes for you, you just have to fill in the blank. As long as you go to SI like twice a week and study decently hard you will get an A. I definitely recommend taking him.
Professor Humphries does a really good job at making sure you understand the material. The lectures are long and they do drag on, but if you pay attention they really do make a difference. Also, he does reviews before every test which go a long way. If you're taking Biology at FGCU I would recommend taking him.
Prof. Humphries had great lectures with helpful power points that covered most of the material in the textbook. All the tests were right off the slides which made studying easy. Every class had daily activities, but missing a few didn't hurt my grade. He is pretty serious, but usually had a daily joke in the slides which brightened up class time.
Great professor, he genuinely cares about the topic and wants everyone to learn. At the same time be aware that Bio 1 is not an easy class and you will have to earn the grade. No tricks though, the class is straightforward.
Professor is a good professor and describes things well. The class was just generally hard and skipping class won't help. I worked very hard to get my grade. Hard class, professor is ok.
Dr. Humphries makes a difficult course easier to manage. He gives print out notes (use them), and he is accommodating. He's the type of professor who really wants his students to succeed. Reading even part of the lab and chapter before class helps tremendously, as the labs are very fast paced. His lectures are slower paced than other professors.
He isn't the best at lecturing but if you pay attention and put in effort, it's not awful. He does "skeleton" fill in the blank notes for each chapter. The exams are a little challenging but if you fill out the study guides that he puts in Canvas and read over them a lot before the test, you'll be fine.
LONG lectures, but he gives fill in the blank notes so it's a lot easier than freehand (he gives a lot of drawing and pictures). Definitely recommend if you somewhat like biology and are willing to put in a few hours of studying for each exam. Whatever you get on your exams is what your grade will be, since the lab quizzes aren't weighted a ton.
Probably the easiest Biology professor at this school. If your taking this class get ready to do the work but this professor makes it a lot easier. He explains the lectures in ways that you'll understand better. Good luck
TAKE! He is an extremely easy professor, Notes are very easy and the only quizzes we took were lab quizzes. Attendance is mandatory because he gives daily activities in class that count for a grade. As for the textbook I opened mine once, just to review for a test. He does make jokes that alot of people dont like but I think are funny
Great Professor, Gives material to succeed in test. Including kahoot, jeopardy, and study guides that you will want to study. Attendance not technically mandatory but daily activities are in class grades that you won't want to miss.
Very difficult tests that cover many chapters. I implore you to study more than you think you should for the first test. Go TO SI! I learn more in SI than in the class. the class averages for the tests are in the 60% range! They also account for a huge portion of your grade! Labs are confusing if you dont need the lab dont pick class with it.
Dr. Humphries wasn't the worst professor I've ever had, but he definitely didn't help me to pass his course. The notes weren't overly helpful and he didn't seem to like my lab group very much as we often were called out for really minor things, like moving too fast or too slowly (in the same day).
This prof is not inspiring, efficient, effective, or worth taking. I learned more from SI sessions than I did his class. His lectures are composed of tedious 100+ Powerpoint slides that often do not relate nor aid to the topic at hand. His labs are pointless. Take another prof that has a more effective teaching style. Class averages are always low.
Dr. Humphries is the best! Best bio 1 professor at FGCU, by far the most accessible and understanding. Will work with you to help you understand the subject, has very to the point questions on exams, gives lots of recourses to help study. Finished the class with an A. Totally would take again.
Awesome. I am just finishing his class now and I love it! The exam grades are weighted very heavily and we only have 4 plus a final so you have to commit to passing. Also, he gives a lot of resources to help study. Straight forward exam questions. Hes Very approachable and kind. Although, he lectures for mostly the whole 3hr class
Great professor, and teaches very well. Exams are not extremely hard, just be sure to study. He gives a lot of bonus questions and curves the exams sometimes as well. Labs are fun, but the quizzes can be mildly difficult, and you can't go back on the questions when taking quizzes.
Has veryyyyy long lectures. Fill in the blank notes. Class mainly on five main tests. Quiz grades and labs dont really count for a lot. So whatever you get on tests be prepared to have that. They are HARD. I studied hours and never got over a 73. I always got between 61-73. Kinda sucks due to long lectures, labs, and quizzes. But it is what it is.
I took Bio 1 w/lab with Humphries. I ended up with an A. Textbook is unnecessary. Material comes from his powerpoints. Memorize powerpoints! Material isn't difficult. If you want to do well, you have to put hours of studying in and plan ahead for studying. What helped me the most was beginning my review weeks before the test. In-class assignments!
Humphries not a good professor, point blank, period. I'm not a stupid person, trust me, received A's in others classes I took. Reads from a powerpoint the whole class and you do a lab and thats it. You study hard, go over the textbook, powerpoints, notes and come test time, the average was always below a 70 after a large curve. Pass on taking him
Professor Humphries is so organized and easy-going in his online classes. I was really worried about having bio with lab online, but everything in his class is clear and his lectures tell you basically everything you need to know. About 2-3 activities per week and 1-2 labs per week. Tough class, great professor. He makes sure you know the material.
TAKE BIOLOGY 1 WITH HUMPHRIES!! I'm currently in one of his bio 1 classes and I'm so glad he's my professor. He truly cares about you and your grade. Mine is an online class, so his lectures are prerecorded but they are so great! He uses real-life examples when teaching complicated biology topics so that it's easier to understand. 10/10 recommend!!
Class was comprised of 20 hw assignments (2-3 questions per chapter), 19 labster labs, and 4 exams. No final. He posts online lectures where he goes over the slides and gives info for exams. Gives study guides, no extra credit. Super caring, he would take some homework assignments away so we wouldn't be too stressed. Take him if you can!! Easy A
All his lectures are listed on youtube at the beginning of the semester. You basically go at your own pace throughout the week but need everything turned in on Sunday. Labs are done through Labster. All 4 exams are open book, pretty easy. No final! His office hours are pretty helpful, he goes through lectures again but opens them for questions.
Im awful at math and science and I got an A in this class. He puts the lectures through YouTube and you have a daily activity that has to bed turneded in by Sunday(which are very easy) and then 4 exams (which are also generally easy) He gave us skeleton notes to use every week and had office hours open to assist. For the lab we used labster.
I love Dr. Humphries class! He makes everything so easy to understand and his lectures are very informative! He even makes jokes throughout his lectures and I think that they are pretty funny. But overall, he is great at what he does, and it is pretty easy to pass this class if you do the work. I totally recommend it!
Great professor! possibly the easiest class you can take here at FGCU. Turn in your assignments on time and you should be able to get an A.
Prof. Humphries is a sweet man and really cares about his students learning. I'm not a big biology fan but managed to get an A in his class. Weekly online lectures took up most of my time followed by "daily activities" that were hidden in the lectures. Lots of labsters and 4 exams that were open book and fairly easy!
This class is pretty chill, if you get your work done on time youll pass
Each day in class consists of a lecture, daily activity, and a lab which is all due the same day. If you are a science major, by all means take the course. However, if you are not a science major, I would suggest you do not take this course. I had to drop the class in the middle of the semester to save my GPA. Would not recommend.
I am currently taking this class and it has been the hardest class I have ever taken. I study my ass off for the test (75% of grade) and received Ds. Not really good to listen to because you cant here him. Struggle to use a microphone. Give bare minimum time to do labs. Every time I had to spilt the work with people because it was to much!
Please save yourself and DO NOT take this class. He makes it way harder than it actually is. You could study a ton for the tests but struggle to get a c- the class average is usually a D or C. Its literally entry level biology it shouldn't have to be this hard. Tests are not open book/notes, theres 5, none get dropped. They contain 100 questions.
This is one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. The tests are extremely difficult, and if you miss one day of class you will not pass the exam. Textbook is not needed but I used it and it saved my grade. Hard to hear him, and very monotone lectures. If you apply yourself you will pass, but you really have to work for it.
Professor Humphries is a pretty good professor; he explains all of the biology concepts thoroughly, and tests are easy A's if you show up to class and pay attention. He truly tries to make your life easier. The only thing is that he is a bit monotone and his lectures become a bit boring after a while, but he still explains everything very well.
He talks forever abt off topic subjects, and gives you little time for a lab (which is stressful). This class is test heavy; those grades will make or break you. He is not a clear teacher and youll have to study to do well. He makes you feel stupid if you cant answer a question he asks. Overall, hes a sucky person and and an avg. prof. at best.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. He is super passive aggressive and will call you a cheater if you do something wrong without correction. The tests are hard and 80 questions along with written response. If you do not fully understand the lectures you will not do well. I studied for hours outside of class to get subpar grades (use the SI sessions).
do NOT take this class. hes extremely passive aggressive & if you do something wrong in the lab hes rude about it & doesnt help correct any mistakes made. the tests are 80 questions long & none of the questions on the tests are taken from the study guides he gives. showing up for this class is mandatory & your grade will drop if you dont show.
Do not take this class! The teacher makes it so much harder than it actually is. The test and quiz average are like 60-70% even with a curve.
Exams are worth 75% of your grade, they are each 80 MC and 20 PTS in written responses, for a total of 100 PTS. The other 25% comes from Lab/Daily Activities which you have to show up to do. The labs are are often confusing. Lectures are long and get sidetracked. Do not be fooled by the ratings from COVID semesters! You will have to study a ton!
Probably the best biology professor you could take. He uses skeleton notes so all you have to do is fill in the blanks which he goes over all the slides in a lecture. Exams are okay as long as you study a lot outside class. I heard that the other biology professors are the worst.
His lectures were very long, but they were very detailed. He was an amazing professor, his office hours were very accessible outside of class and he asked any questions. Tests weren't that bad since he gave out a lot of resources. His lab portion of the class is kind of hard since he only goes over the instructions briefly, but they're doable.
Professor Humphries was an excellent choice for my bio class this semester. He tries to make his lectures funny and uses powerpoints for his lectures. He's good at explaining and offers lots of resources to help you be successful in class. Attendance isn't mandatory but you have labs and Daily Activities every class so that counts as attendance.
He's not a bad person, but he makes you feel stupid sometimes even though his explanations aren't great and he doesn't try to help you. The labs are very confusing but the tests aren't bad if you study for them and try to understand the material, and he gives enough material to prepare. Pretty easy going compared to other professors though
Do not be discouraged by Professor Humphries's serious demeanor at the beginning of the semester! He is one of the best professors in the Biology department and a great teacher. Do not take him if you aren't ready to study, as tests make up 75% of your grade. Professor Humphries provides all the resources you need for an A. You will learn so much!!
The class had very long lectures, but he would give us breaks so we weren't staring at the board the whole time. The in-class assignments were easy, as were the labs. He is a very blunt professor and is not afraid to tell you if you are doing something wrong. There is a good-amount of studying you have to do outside of class. Overall, he's good.
Great as a person, but very tough as a professor. Tests take about 80% of your grade, so you can get a 100 on every assignment and then get a 70 on the test and your grade will drop significantly. All of the quizzes after labs are graded strictly, and answers are hidden so you have to spend time after class if you want to see what you got wrong.
Professor Humphries is great, his lectures are long but he gives the notes and you fill in the blanks as he goes through the lecture. Overall this class is difficult but if you study A LOT you will be fine. His exams are 75% of your grade. He is very understanding too.
If biology and other sciences do not come easy to you, I do not recommend this professor. This class is very lecture heavy, and he makes you feel stupid whenever you ask questions. If you do not study you will fail. Tests are worth 75% of your grade, so you can be doing really well and 1 test will drop you tremendously. I do not recommend
tests are worth 75% of your grade so if you don't get an A or B your grade will drop dramatically. very rude, makes you feel stupid for asking questions and yells if he think you're being too slow with a lab, calls students slow. lectures are read directly off of a powerpoint for an hour or two at a time. very little breaks during the whole class.
Professor Humphries knows what he is talking about and you can tell he deeply cares about his practice, but he gets easily frustrated with students who don't grasp the concepts quickly and those who take a little longer during labs. Exams make up about 75% of your grade so if you don't test well I would suggest someone else.
Your average biology teacher, super smart but not amazing with humans, he tries tho
If you can take him do he's amazing
First let me start by saying Dr. Humphries is incredibly smart and his lectures show that. Bio 1 is a tough class but he tries his hardest to make the content understandable. He gives plenty of study materials for the exams and even does kahoots in class. The labs are fun but the lab quizzes are challenging. He is a little intimidating though lol.
Biology is a hard class. Humphries made the class as easy as it could have been. You have to put the work in although. The work he puts into the class won't matter if you aren't ready to put the work in. His test is hard especially the final, but if you put the time and effort in, it won't nearly be as hard as your friends with other professors.
Dr. Humphries really did make this class as easy as possible. He goes over the general ideas of Biology and helps you understand it by connecting it to a lot of real life examples. He may be frustrating at times but overall he really does care and it shows.
Professor Humphries class was not the easiest in my personal opinion, the lab quiz are harder than expected and his lectures are boring and its hard to stay focused in that class. He is not a bad guy and his powerpoints are very informational and useful but the exams are a bit hard. I dont recomment him
Biology is a hard course in general. If you are not willing to put the work in, you will not do well, regardless of the professor. Professor Humphries gives EVERY resource you need to be successful if you study and put the work in. There are many opportunities besides exams to keep your grade up, but you must do decent on the exams to pass.
its sad that he is considered one of the easier bio teachers. His lectures are long rambles of nothing. DO NOT WASTE MONEY ON THE TEXTBOOK! the only info you need for tests come from his powerpoint, study thought and you'll be fine. I just don't think this professor cares about his students or his grades.
I took Humphries as a freshman and it was a tough class. But he is one of few teachers that create guided lecture notes which are pretty easy to follow. If you study those you are golden. You do not have to buy the textbook but it helps If you want to completely understand the material past the expected read and recite stuff.
His lectures go with what's on the exams he gives, pay attention and put in the work to comprehend. He makes the material connect and build up and not too confusing.
He was honestly amazing. His chapter outlines are so helpful and he is very passionate about what he does. Put in effort and you will do great!
This is not an easy subject to begin with. Doc Humphries always updates his powerpoints and you can see how much effort he puts into them. He tries to correlate things we encounter in the real world with his lectures to help us understand the material. He literally sets you up for success. He gives you multiple study guides for you to pass.
Loved this class, especially the lab portion. The exams were straightforward and partial credit is always given. As long as you show up, pay attention and put time aside to study, you could definitely pass this class. If you're a freshman and looking for an easy bio class, take Humphries!!
Don't buy the textbook, you won't use it even once. His tests are based on fill-in notes that he lectures on that he then makes you write extra notes on for a grade. The labs/quizzes are not about what you're learning and exams determine your entire grade, so be ready to study. You do a lab almost every class so attendance is mandatory to pass.
Out of all of the bio prof here I think he is the best He gives 1-2 5 min breaks during lectures tries to make them relatable &plays funny or helpful videos He also links videos to watch when there is an upcoming test Do the work and study and you will pass I suck at bi o& I have a B He can be passive aggressive but nothing awful I really liked him
1000/10 recommend. This class with Dr. H made me switch my major to biology. Gives fill in the blank notes with lots of pictures to make the lectures easy to understand. Gave study guides and kahoots for every exam that help A LOT. Curves every exam and also gives bonus points. Never was required to use textbook, but it was helpful for extra info.
Dr. H can be a little grumpy sometimes, but overall a very kind and relaxing person. Don't buy the textbook, you won't ever use it. All the tests are based on his PowerPoints and jeopardies, so study hard. His tests are very long and tricky, but shouldn't be hard as long as you study. He gives breaks during lectures which is very helpful. Good luck
Professor Humphries was a great professor. His class is mostly lectures, but they were interesting and he always included videos or activities to go with them. Exams are a big part of your grade, but they aren't hard if you study for them and he always offers extra credit. I really enjoyed this class and I learned so much from him!
Was alright. Study day and night if you want to pass this class.
Professor Humphries provides skeleton notes for each class which is very nice. You can either print them out or do them online. The study guides as well as the jeopardies he provides for each exam are incredibly helpful. I personally wouldn't take him again only due to no feedback during class labs, but overall very interesting class.
LOVED his class. exams are long and somewhat tricky but he offers extra credit at the end. his TAs are amazing and will help you through the labs. doesn't love talking with students but he has times where he's pretty nice. lectures are great and he does pre exam kahoots and jeopardies. i wish the entire bio dept would be like him, take his class!!!
Professor H's class is a challenge, but engaging lectures and helpful study tools like guided notes and Kahoots make it manageable. Definitely skip the textbook - focus on his slides and use unstuck ai for extra practice questions.
Mr Humphries is a great professor if you want to take him for General Bio 1. The tests are 75 percent of your grade which is a bit especially if your a bad testtaker. However the tests arent as bad as other biology proffessors. They usually are 80 Mc 20 Opened-ended however he almost always includes ec and he rounds 8-10 points almost every exam.
Very passionate about biology. He gives us an outline of the notes and goes through them in class, which is helpful. Only down side is that he can make 3 slides turn into 30 minutes worth of lecture by trying to show examples of what we are learning but they never helped me tbh. Hard class but not his fault if you want to pass STUDY.
Lectures are long and boring. Tests are 100 questions each and worth 75% of your grade. Whatever grades you get on the test will be your grade in the class. No extra credit opportunities. Lab quizzes are difficult and timed. If you take this class utilize the TAs.
I really liked him, and I found the class to be pretty easy. The exams were worth a lot but if you use the slideshows and Kahoots and jeopardies he provides you should ace the tests. Attendance isn't mandatory but you have to do Daily activities and lab reports. I would highly recommend him for Gen Bio.
This class is based mostly on tests, lab quizzes, and daily activities which count as attendance. Tests are mostly multiple choice which a few short answer questions and always had bonus questions at the end. All you need is the powerpoint notes he posts on canvas. He uploads plenty of study materials for each of the 5 tests. Very good class.
Overall pretty great professor. 4 tests worth 75% of your grade. Overall the lectures were interesting and he would tie in interesting relevant news stories and media to further drive in the concepts. Kinda mean and will make you look stupid in front of the class but... if you're looking for a good lecturer he is pretty solid.
You can't skip class
Overall, not a super hard class lectures can be boring but come to class or you will miss a lot of information (he uses guided notes)! The exams are 80 multiple choice and 20 short answers + bonus points minus the final which is all multiple choice. Study using the jeopardy reviews and practice exam questions, but he has other study tools too!!
Not very interactive during class (i took this class fall 2023). I studied so much for this class and yet i failed. the tests included nothing of what the lectures did. I was confused for most of the class. the TA was wonderful though. loved her to death, made class worth going to.
Long and dull lectures are standard. Each test consists of 100 questions and accounts for 75% of your final grade. Your class grade will be determined by your test scores. No opportunities for additional credit. Lab tests are timed and challenging. Make use of the TAs if you enroll in this course.
He is super funny and his class is pretty easy if you can keep up with the workload, study, and stay awake. my class was three hours and that was probs the hardest part. the exams are hard if you don't study but use the study guides and take the practice test along with the other games he provides bc that is what he bases them on.
This class is extremely hard, do NOT take unless you need it for your major!! I love his teaching style and like him but wish there were more opportunities to raise your grade bc if you fail all the exams you will not pass- his tests are very long and super difficult. Also- DO NOT make my mistake and take it at 7:30 am.. class is 3 hrs long.
Humphries is a pretty hands off professor, but when I put the work in I did well in the class. He doesn't assign excessive busy work you just have to stay on top of studying. His lectures are pretty long but he gives you a powerpoint and you just have to fill in the blanks.
Took him at 7:30 am, it was very hard to stay awake and his lectures are kinda boring, the exams are really hard and they don't have nothing in common with the jeopardy practices, also you can't really talk to him.
Mr. Humphieres class was very mixed with emotions, long lectures and daily assignments all the time.I dropped his class due to the grading scale of his test, the study guides and preparation is up to you, he is a very tough grader and hard to talk to at sometimes, but the labs were okay. It was normal to drop from him, he has a high dropping rate.
Not a terrible professor but there's better classes out there. Hour and a half lecture and a hour and a half lab, lectures were just filling in the blank on ppt. Graded activities everyday so attendance is a must, 4 exams and a final which is basically your entire grade. Very boring class, learned everything outside of class, and TAs were great.
do not take humphries if you plan on putting minimal effort in the class. exams are 100q & worth 70% of the grade. i made the mistake of not studying til later tests and managed to end w/ a C after bombing the first two exams. labs are pretty simple, he does DAs daily so missing class can rack up. boring lectures, reads off ppt, had to teach myself
I don't know why he has a lower rating because he is amazing. The lectures are long and boring, but not hard. Your course grade is based on the 4 exams and the final exam, but he gives you all the resources you could ever need. My biggest advice for this class is to do your ION notes well and use them to study AND use his practice exams!!!
