Hurley is not your typical MBA teacher. He brings a lot of psychology to the class. Stimulates student participation. Doesn't teach so much as moderate class discussions. Raises student awareness of interpersonal dynamics.
A great teacher. You gain so much with so much fun. One of the best teachers I have had so far
Great Prof! Very knowledgeable, no question that adds great value to his students
Kind of a joke...you won't learn much from the class but will get good team experience, and the Meyers Briggs class is fun and interesting.
A professor with a PHD, and an MBA from Wharton who champions a humanistic approach to mgt!?! An Extremely worthwhile class. If you attend, keeping up with the material is easy, but the group projects are NO JOKE. Overall a fun, entertaining class that will serve you well for future success.
Great class, you get out of it what you put into it. It's very group project oriented, so try and get into a team you know you work well with. Hurley has an unusual array of credentials and his approach is a breath of fresh air compared to most other MBA classes, despite his arrogance.
Very arrogant. not available outside of the class.
Dr. Hurley creates a unique learning experience-engages the class, sets high expectations of students and learning, and ultimately delivers a positive, interactive, and worthwhile class. My perceptions of "leadership" were certainly challenged and my understanding of this topic has been greatly enhanced. So far, the best class I've taken at Fordha
Great class and a great professor. I did not find him to be arrogant at all. Interesting reading, GREAT classroom interaction. The best class I have taken at Fordham. Highly recommended if like to learn and not waste time in class. Not hard, but stimulates critical thinking and is applicable to real world.
This is a good class that helps you learn a lot about your own strengths/weaknesses and how it plays into a larger, group dynamic. Teacher moderates class discussions rather than straight-up teaching. The work load is not bad. Group presentation and class participation most heavily weighted. Good professor to take this intro class with.
Great Professor. This is the best class I've taken at Fordham so far!
GREAT CLASS. Intimated on the first day, dreaded the group projects, but at the end well worth while, learned a lot about myself and the team. Hurley is a great teacher who wants to see you succed and gives you all of the tools. GREAT!!
Very interesting class and professor. Was four days during the weekends. Time went by fast. Prof. Hurley teaches you relevant topics and is an good communicator. He goes over assigned readings which alot of professors don't/
Best professor I've had at Fordham. Good balance of wanting you to learn, but not have you stress out about grades. Lot of group work (paper, presentation, and group exam), so get on a good team. Good amount of reading if you are committed. Would take him again in a minute.
Leadership and Emotional Intel. One of the best classes I've taken at Fordham. I'll recommend taking the weekend classes rather than during the week. It blows your weekends for two weeks, but you do get a lot out of it.
Very interesting material. Fair amount of assignments on group project. Fair grading. He rocks!
Beware of this professor, very arrogant person. This class is total joke, don't take it. You do not get to fill out an evaluation of him at the end of the semester and he is nasty if he doesn't like you. He will purposely grade you harder and you answers are comparable to others who received higher grades. Very creepy guy.
Super class. Hurley cares about teaching. Everyone needs to lead one class; this is a useful exercise. Exams are interesting.
Amazing teacher. Classes were interesting and insightful. I would take any class he taught. He really involves his students and makes you think about how to maximize your strengths on the job.
Profesor is opinionated, unfair grader and if he doesn't like you, then no matter if you get good grades throughout the course you will get a bad grade. Not a hard class, but teacher is poor. For someone who says he is so spiritual and has all this knowledge, he is very judgemental. Also classes were boring and not very stimulating.
Did not enjoy. Makes poor taste comments/ remarks.
Previous posts were very accurate, guy is a strange bird who likes to bask in his glory of being a PHD. Class was useless and a waste of time. Unfortunately he takes attendance, otherwise a couple of people would show up. Very dissappointed for a class that had potential, he is arrogant and rubbed me the wrong way.
I like this professor a lot. In my opinion a very interesting class and not difficult. Midterm, final + 2 short papers (basically about yourself). If you like to think abt the human psyche and philosophy of life then this class is made for you.
Prof gives the impression that he is open-minded – but really is not. He definitely has is class favorites - so try to be one as it helps your grade. Enough exam questions could have multiple right answers – but he doesn’t really listen if you try to defend. The reading for the class was very good - worth taking the class for this.
Solid Prof who cares about developing students. Not easy and has high expectations but creates a dynamic class. One of the best Prof's at Fordham
One of the most arrogant rude professors I have ever had. If the guy does not like you forgot about it you can be the smartest person and he will still give you a bad grade. Fordham should be ashamed to have a given this guy tenure.
All the comments about him being arrogant are completely true.
Guy doesn't give a damn about his students, only that they know who his high flight clients are and that he is a PHD. Pompous is the word I was really looking for. Inflexible as they come. Coursework is reading a bunch of cases and writing about it (how stimulating). Not exactly the makings of a capstone course. Take At your own risk.....
He's not an "educator." He's the type of professor who teaches to make himself feel smarter and better than other people. The stuff he teaches is common sense so not hard to grasp. In order to succeed in this class, you have to make it seem like you love him and his class, otherwise you won't get an A.
I was really excited about this class prior to taking it. Prof. Hurley is VERY unorganized and reads straight from the slides, which is SO boring. What a loss.
Hurley has tremendous knowledge of the subject and makes it clear and applied for students. He has high standards and does not react well if you slack off but his class is really valuable. He takes his class seriously and cares about developing students.
Defintelly knows his stuff. He expects alot and doesn't suffer slackers well but delivers a really valuable educational experience that I think will help career success
Arrogant and self-absorbed. Not available to students, does not reply to emails. Worst of all, he doesn't put ANY effort into his classes. He uses his students to lead each class, and just sits there and talks a little bit every class. He's a disgrace to Fordham.
Great Prof, knows his stuff and what he teaches will make a difference in my career
Nice guy, really wants to help students be more successful in their careers. Course covers key capabilitites for career success
awesome prof and great class!
Really learned alot...will help me ...Prof knows his stuff...he expects alot but not too much
Class is focused on key competencies for career success. Material is useful and mostly practical. I got alot out of the class. Prof does a nice job involving students and making it interesting
I learned alot and would take another of his classes. Hurley's teaching style is to get the students talking and he sort of facilitates but it is clear that he knows where he wants the conversation to go. Recommended class and Prof
Fun class and I learned alot. Good readings and Hurley gets students engaged. Takes attendance and grades class particpation. The class was valuable
Very valuable course, no question it helped me be a better manager. Interesting material, Hurley creates alot of student engagement. Fair amount of work but worth it.
Hurley Rocks! Knows his stuff and offers very practical suggestions. I will be a better manager after taking this class!
My grade was surprisingly fine, but not happy that I actually paid for this guy to bring his wife up for the weekend (it was clearly his motivation for being there). Pompus is an understatement. With another instructor this could actually be a good class, what a shame.
I completely agree with the other comments. This is the only professor that has integrity issues. 1) did not grade according to the syllabus, 2) provided the information for the only gradable exam the night before, 3) did not proctor the exam so people could get clarification on the questions. His purpose of being there was a free weekend away.
I took this class with Hurley and thought he was awesome. The negative ratings here are from people in my class who blew off the exam and have never take our classes seriously. Hurley held them accountable and they are offended by this dose of reality. Good for him!
Very practical class with a Prof that has both a strong research and real world experience. Super valuable class and Prof. Best at Fordham by far!
Wow, incredibly useful class! Prof really knows the research and how to use it in practice. No question it will help me in future.
Solid prof, greet class
Great content delivered in a way that makes it interesting. Be prepared to be engaged!
Solid class that will no doubt help my career. Hurley expects a lot but makes the class a valuable experience. Does not tolerate slackers well so if you just want your ticket punched take someone else
Best Prof at Fordham. Brilliant, knows his field and his course is incredibily valuable to your career
Best Prof at Fordham. Brilliant, knows his field and his course is incredibily valuable to your career
Best Prof at Fordham. Brilliant, knows his field and his course is incredibily valuable to your career
Solid Prof valuable course content
participation is 20% of the grade and you will not get an A unless you talk all the time. yet he doesn't know anyones name. basically 3 out of 4 classes the students are teaching the class (yes 2 hour presentations almost every week). sad since the three classes he taught were actually pretty interesting. tests are ambiguous and mostly best guess.
I really enjoyed this professor. I found him to be knowledgeable and passionate about the subject of leadership.
In the first 10min of class this prof said "This is one of those classes that may change your life". In my head I said yeah right. I was wrong. Over 4 days I learned more than any other class I have every taken he is extremely articulate, thoughtful, caring, and an expert in his field. This class is a must if you want to succeed in life.
Cool Dude
Very valuable class with lots of interaction.
Hurley is not a good professor. You teach half the semester with group projects. He then missed 3 classes. He is arrogant and needs to be called Dr. Does not take opinions well if different from his. This is the epitome of what is wrong with Fordham: lousy professors and $3,500 for every class. These professors are not taught HOW TO TEACH!
Wow, this course has had a huge impact on me. Really clarified my strengths, weaknesses and motives. Wish I had taken it 10 years ago. The class has made this degree MUCH more valuable! Hurley rocks.
Great class. Hurley gets students involved and the material is very useful to success as a manager.
Very interesting material and overall a solid course. Professor is knowledgeable and when he decides to actually lecture, the class lives up to all the positive comments. Otherwise I disagree with his student presentation heavy class and he needs to be more transparent in terms of how to approach exams, presentations, journals and class discussions
Topics covered were valuable and interesting. Hurley teaches some classes straight out but facilitates discussion in others. The classes tend to be pretty engaging. High recommended Prof and class
Lonnie recommended this class if I was interested in focusing on management. He said if you don't like this class, you probably won't like management. Saying that the class was boring and useless. Hurley had three good lectures basically going over his book, but after we just burned time on an unorganized project. He's also self absorbed
This was an interesting class that covers leadership and then goes deeper into trust. Useful stuff. We also analyzed trustworthiness of companies in an industry. Hurley really knows his stuff and creates a great class environment
Hurley expects a lot but this class was really valuable. In three days we learned more about ourselves and how people differ than I had in the entire MBA program. Amazing class!
Great class, very valuable for my career. Covered many key areas and got class very engaged. Hurley is a great Prof, has a sense of humor also!
Dr. Hurley is a great professor. He makes you read long tracts but those are all valuable. It was great that me made us read the book 'Good to Great' for the mid-term and making the presentation. If you study well and make good presentations you are sure to get an A. He's absolutely honest and does justice to the class. He's simply great!
Hurley has an amazing combination of academic credibility and real world experience. Best Prof at Fordham. Valuable course!
I felt that this class really got into some cutting edge leadership ideas. Really good persepctive on ethics and trust and how not to repeat the management mistasks of the past. Hurley is very interesting and engaging. Best management prof I have had by far!
Two papers, one presentation, a 2 hour exam with long extensive questions, and one sides lectures. You can have all this for two credits towards your GPA. Caveat Emptor!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Learn how to teach! Easy contents but he makes things complicated. Tests on everything without any hints.
Horrible Teaching, though interesting content
intentionally curve students' grade to a lower grade, do not recommend to take this course.
This man is egoistical to the point that you just want to laugh in his face. Completely into himself, can't teach... luckily he's tenured, right? Corrupt (his book, his useless surveys, his retreat, etc.). I felt unwelcome in his class, especially since English is not my native language... Stay away! Grading system is based on how much he likes you
Worst professor I ever had. Purposefully ruined peoples grades and hes full of himself Gave random 70s to lower overall grades. No clear grading criteria or rubric for how papers will be graded. Got As on all tests and still didnt get A for class despite also participating and never missing a class.
Questionable sources used (used his own work, lacks variety of sources), subjective quizzes, unclear grading criteria of final, participation and overall grade (sent grading criteria in email in dec), purposely curve grade lower for majority of classes, ego & anger issues (to the point it's unreasonable). Wish I chose another prof. Don't recommend.
Very interactive teaching style. Knows his stuff. Very valuable course for career
Interesting class. Hurley is intense but knows his stuff. Portion of class on self awareness was interesting and very helpful.
Bad professor. Cannot teach. If you are assigned to this professor in Gabelli sophomore year. Drop it or change your cohort immediately. Or your GPA will be screwed.
Hurley has high expectations and can be demanding but the content of the class, the applied case studies and all are really valuable. Does not give out easy A's which offends some students.
XD! What a clown!
Great Prof and made class interesting. Moderate workload
Interesting class and Hurley knows his stuff. He challenges students and its not an easy A like many courses. Overall really valuable to my career.
The worst professor I've had. Grades you based on arbitrary criteria that aren't established at the beginning of class, makes you read his terrible book (with fake five-star Amazon reviews) as the only mandatory reading for the entire semester, then ends the class by making you write a paper about yourself that he'll grade harshly. Don't take.
Great class but challenging. Hurley forces you to think and not just memorize stuff which means that exams can be challenging. Prof offers great combination of academic cred and hands-on management experience.
Great course with lots of useful take aways. Hurley engages students and the class was high energy. Not an easy grader though.
Learned so much about negotiation in such a short time. Very interactive and helpful class for an MBA.
Learned a lot from this class! There were reading assignments and summaries before every class but they were all very interesting and informative for someone who really wants to improve negotiation skills. Dr. Hurley was very engaging in class. He provided the right balance of lectures, discussions, and simulations. I enjoyed the class a lot!
This class was interesting and I think it will help me in my career. Made me want to major in mangement
Great class and Prof was excellent. Probably the best Prof I have had at Fordham
